Welcome to Academy City. The time is late morning, the weather is foggy, and the date is December 30.

You are Kyril Torikov and you just wished your car would shut up. It used to belong to Ben-jii. Now it was in your possession after you promised Nayuta to keep it quiet, literally. Everyone who came close made the car emit a ghostly noise. It was unsettling to them. You weren’t however and quickly came up with a theory. You called in Kaoru. The car didn’t try to boo her away. Then she was able to recognise where the sound was coming from. It came from the sound system. Thus if you yanked it out, the keening wail would stop. Of course Kaoru had hypothesised that it was some kind of protection or warning system of some kind. That was when she called the Index and Touma in.

Index, true to form, was able to deduce how it all came together. The roof was key. The roof was also missing. Asuka had removed it with The Dean a few days earlier. It took a while to recover. You just wanted the damn thing repaired. As luck would have it, Index was only able to identify that the carvings and decorations to the interior of the car were somehow related to North American Animism. Unlike the grimmoires of other systems, most Animistic practices were passed down orally and only to a select few who have been chosen. You were left with few options. One, the assembled would attempt restoration of the system’s functionality. It wouldn’t be a perfect fix but it should be enough. Two, you could replace it entirely with a different set of enchantments. It would be defensive in nature, protecting the car and its occupants from harm and misfortune. Finally you could get rid of it altogether. Code M could be more trouble than it was worth and with a meaty punch, Touma could get rid of the problem for you.

It was best to simply replace the whole thing. That got Index and Kaoru arguing about the merits of the enchantments. The Russian and Eastern Orthodoxies have been known to bless weapons of war, in addition to their soldiers after all. That was what Index wanted. Sadly she was shot down, and not because she didn’t have valid points. She did. It was just that the car was not actually a weapon of war. For your purposes it would never be. At least, that was what Nayuta told you. It was a shame but you could live with it. How many your age were allowed to own a sports car, let alone drive one?

You went with Kaoru’s suggestion. Buddhists had a habit of making a sanctuary out of everything. It could be seen primarily in the South East Asian nations. Blessing a car was pretty normal to them all things considered. Though Kaoru was not exactly an expert, she did have enough knowledge to construct the “temple” as it were. It took a bit of time to restore the roof and the interior in to a blank slate. Then she dabbed her hand in a pasty powder mixed with consecrated water, drawing out the spires and symbols of protection on the ceiling. So long as Touma kept his hands off of it, theoretically, your vehicle was now warded from misfortune and other Code M attacks. It was also now approachable by the average person without scaring the crap out of them. A minor loss all told.

With the extraordinary problems sorted out, the rest of the day would probably be dedicated to fixing the car. You were unfortunately going to have to pay for that out of your pocket but at least that was cheaper than buying it. Kaoru was heading out in to the Tenth again. She was going to have lunch with Kyouko. Touma and Index had their own plans for lunch, as did Nayuta.

Plans for lunch?

The time is now lunch, the weather is clearing up, and the date remains unchanged.

“This was not necessary,” Kaoru stated, “But it is not unwelcome.”

“She means she wants to jump your bones,” Kyouko suggested.

Kaoru simply rolled her eyes and returned to her lunch. You had of course managed to obtain some Moonlight Splendour Curry. Now you were sharing it with your colleague and the Slumlord.

“I always come to you for trouble,” you replied.

Kaoru sighed, as if you didn’t trouble her at all. Still you didn’t want all your interactions with her to be something like that. The only thing you could recall that you did for her was the birthday party. You could have been a better friend.

“So how’d that thingymajig go?” Kyouko switched topics, “I know I got sick of the chumps sent to kill me and steal it back after the fifth time.”

“Only the fifth?” you wondered.

“You know how it is right Pops?” she shrugged, “I ain’t complaining about being popular but idiots think knocking me over makes them king or some shit.”

“It is an amazing experiment in parahuman feudalism,” Kaoru added.

“What book didja nab that quote from?”

“She do this all the time?”

“Never thought Chibi’d be a smart alec,” Kyouko answered.

“At all events, the next best thing to being witty one’s self, is to be able to quote another’s wit,” Kaoru quoted.

“Bah, enough about that hoighty-toighty crap,” Kyouko had enough, “What do you want this time Pops?”

“What do you mean?” you asked.

“Well, you’re here to see, even brought gifts,” she pointed out, “So obviously you want something right? Isn’t that how it works?”

“You’ll have to excuse her,” Kaoru said dryly, “She finds the notion of friendship rather strange.”

“Doesn’t help I don’t really have any,” the Slumlord huffed, “Enemies, minions, bosses, yes, friends, nah.”

“It’s nothing,” you finally said.

“Like hell it is,” Kyouko retorted, “Betcha it’s girl problems again.”

It seemed your lack of reaction was all she needed.

“Thought so,” she continued, “So whose heart didja break this time?”

You turned towards Kaoru. She too was wondering about it. At least you tried not making the lunch all about yourself. They were the ones that asked.

“Sparky,” you answered.

“Oh?” Kaoru wondered.

“Ooooooh,” Kyouko’s grin widened, “Man, you’re shit outta luck here Pops.”

“I was thinking peace offering,” you stated, “Not sure where to start though.”

“Hey Chibi, I’m not good at this whole asking for forgiveness thing, help him out will ya?”

“I think what matters here is your sincerity,” Kaoru advised.

But how to show it? That was the problem.

“Why can’t ya just ask her friends?” Kyouko continued.

You turned to Kaoru.

“I am not an expert on that topic,” Kaoru replied flatly.

“You know who is,” you stated.

“Shirai-san.”

Damn.

“Oh, Twitchy, how’d I forget about her?” Kyouko wondered, “Yeah, she’s an expert alright.”

You didn’t like your chances with her. She would also probably ask for some form of recompense and not necessarily the monetary kind. Other than that, you were thinking of buying Sparky a gift. It spoke a lot about you when the only way you had to apologise was through such things.

“If we leave within the hour Shirai-san should still be on patrol, or at the very least, at lunch, before she has to leave for classes,” Kaoru recalled.

“Seriously?” Kyouko asked, “I thought it was a holiday or something.”

“One of the drawbacks of being a member of Judgement, or law enforcement I suppose, is that you never really have days off,” Kaoru replied.

As much as I know that we suck at gift giving, asking Shirai is all around bad idea. Really don't wanna explain our situation to her. Also she hates us. Maybe if we can get Kaoru to ask in our steed but it still weird. Also wanna show off our car.

I don't wanna pick Shirai's brain either but we could just say we feel bad for losing her sword since it had such sentimental value "muh dead aniki ".

also, be sure to tell her we're already in a relationship.

The time is afternoon, the weather is still cloudy, and the date remains unchanged.

“Well at you tried,” you said.

“I understand,” Kaoru replied sullenly.

“C’mon, c’mon,” Kyouko led impatiently.

She had wanted to tag along with you and Kaoru to check on your car. In her words, “This I gotta see.” Thus after lunch, and dismissing whatever work the Slumlord did, the three of you arrived at the City’s personal vehicle authority. It was a rather big garage, meant mainly for inspections. In your case, it was meant for refurbishing personal vehicles of various Anti-Skill officers.

You had concluded that talking to Shirai was more trouble than it was worth. Whatever gifts you got may even seem sincere. Thus when you were going to meet Sparky, you would only give her the truth and nothing else but.

“Well where is it?” Kyouko demanded.

The three of you were standing right next to it. Kaoru and you shared a glance.

“She can’t see it,” Kaoru stated the obvious.

“Does that make her an evil spirit?” you wondered.

“Oi.”

You grabbed her hand, moving it in contact with the car, wondering if she could perceive it otherwise.

“Huh?”

So she did.

“Invisible car,” Kyouko continued, “That’s fuckin neato.”

“It’s not invisible,” Kaoru interjected, “I think it’s because of what we did to it.”

“Kaoru, show her the car,” you spotted a mechanic heading your way, “I need to finish some paperwork.”

Nodding, she led the Slumlord in to the car. Kyouko only hit her head twice.

“All clear here sir,” the mechanic stated, “We replaced the radio too, so it’s up to standard, but otherwise.”

He led you around the front of the car. The front left side was unpainted but you recognised it was a proper replacement. It was probably the only thing left to do. The question was whether there was anything else you wanted to add to the car while it was here?

“We gave it the standard Anti-Skill package,” the mechanic motioned, “Sound proof trunk, isolated back seats, kind of tricky with the Camaro but we managed. The glove compartment had been modified beforehand, so all we needed to do was refurbish it a bit to be big enough to hold two assault rifles. It folds in and out of course.”

That was neat. The mechanic went down the list,

“Replaced the tires, tuned the shocks, reprogrammed the ECU and optimised the airflow but otherwise it’s supposed to look like any other car on the road.”

“You have blinkers I hope,” you said.

“I guess we could get on for you, not that you really needed it, since the license plate does that for you.”

The plates had “HSCC02” written on them. Maybe you could change them later.

“We also offer complementary air fresheners in the form of fuzzy dice.”

“I’ll take them, as well as a first aid kit.”

“Naturally,” the mechanic smiled and walked off.

“Man you should have asked for a flamethrower, or a rocket launcher, or a machine gun,” Kyouko’s voice returned.

She had popped her head out of the passenger side window. Maybe you should have. Nayuta could probably arrange for something. You replied her with a shrug instead.

“Yeah, it wouldn’t be fair to the other racers,” Kyouko concluded.

Wait what?

“Think you could paint it black though?”

“We’re scheduled to do that tomorrow actually,” the mechanic returned.

“What exactly do you want to do with my car Kyouko?”

“Nothing, I mean, it’s not like Trick’s kids have been getting uppity or anything.”

That was a name you recognised. Behind your mask your eyes narrowed as you searched the Anti-Skill database for information. There were minor infractions really. Most of it seemed to relate to vehicular theft and illegal acts in motor vehicles in general. Certainly not something to bring the weight of the HsCC-02 VERDICT on but,

“I’m going to regret this,” you mock complained, “How can I help?”

She smiled as Kaoru looked on worriedly.

“Ya know, now that I think of it, you don’t know shit about the Strange do you?”

You didn’t. All you had was the fact that she ruled it, and Kaoru’s little comment on ‘parahuman feudalism’. Maybe this would be a nice learning experience.

“You know Trick?” she asked.

“We’ve met, once or twice,” you replied, “He still in a wheel chair?”

“We gonna do a little drive-by.”

“I cannot condone this course of action,” Kaoru practically shouted.

“Calm yer tits Chibi, we only gonna drive by his place,” Kyouko was confused, “You know, show the flag, make sure he remembers Who-Not-To-Go-At?”

Oh, well that didn’t seem bad. Kaoru mirrored your expression.

“What?” Kyouko asked, “Is this one of those stupid slang things again?”

You didn’t answer that, instead, getting in to the driver’s seat and starting up the car. It was a smooth rumble. A well oiled machine that didn’t make a sound until you permitted it. A moment later, you were out of the garage and roaring down the road. The radio was playing some bland pop. Kyouko gave directions. It was a long trip, though at some point you wished it was longer. There were times were the Camaro could stretch its legs but sadly, not for too long, unless you wanted another traffic collision on record.

The red brick building you pulled up at was as worn as the rest of the district, with few people milling outside. Guards, you mentally tagged them.

“You can come up with me if you want but Imma shake him down for some loose change,” Kyouko said before she got out, “Though if you want to make friends with your Judgement buddies I think they got a stash around here somewhere.”

“Oh, and one last thing, keep that armband off,” Kyouko warned.

The two of you got out and entered the building. Kyouko had some of the thugs show you “the good stuff” while she went to deal with her business. They led you down, while she ascended some stairs. You didn’t talk, but the two thugs with you did. They tried to make small talk but with you ignoring them, they ignored you after a bit.

The basement was a parking garage but most of it had been repurposed as an impromptu chop shop. The air was thick with vaporised paint, though it didn’t look like the thugs noticed. Your helmet had filtered it out. By the work station were several power tools. The walls themselves were lined with various metal car parts. Rims and tires were stacked on top of each other. There were only two cars here. One was a Japanese model, sitting low with a fierce looking grille and aggressive aero kit. You could barely recognise the LanEvo underneath all the red and white paint.

The other one, you recognised right away. Orange and black with a distinctive scuff mark. You walked up to it.

“A beauty ain’t it,” one of the thugs said, “Found rolling on its own power out of the Anti-Skill impound lot.”

With that little tidbit you fully reconstructed their crime. Breaking down their timetable and going from there. It was easy. With a prize like this, no wonder Trick would have gotten a bit big in the head. With a ding, a door on the far side opened. It was an elevator and the two thugs with you straightened up. Out stepped Kyouko. Trick had to wheel himself in. You noted how she walked behind him. You thought it was a trick of the light how he managed to wheel himself up to you so quickly.

“So this is VERDICT huh?” he mused, “And here I was wondering who rolled up out front. Bet you like talking with your own kind huh?”

He was referring to the CHEAT Super Sport next to you. You think the car was slowly backing up from you and you didn’t know why.

“You interested? Ah what am I saying? ‘Course you are,” he continued on his own, “How bout a little trade? See, I was really interested in that ride you came in on. Well not personally, but there’s a gear head who was very interested in those kinds of things.”

He spoke dismissively of your car, yet still wanted it. Kyouko had a bored look but you knew she had your back. There were only a few things you could do at this point,

Naturally, you would have to find out more. You opened a private line to Nayuta as you spoke for the first time to Trick and his goons,

“Tell me more.”

“Interested huh? I knew this thing was worth the trouble of smuggling in,” he smiled, “even if it did resist a bit. But computers am I right?”

“Who wants the car?”

“Normally I don’t go tattling to others.”

“Then make an exception,” Kyouko interrupted.

Trick angled his head upwards to look at the ceiling.

“So even the Slumlord wants to know? Must be some hot product,” Trick returned his gaze to you, “Some broad, dunno her name. Said she wanted a red American muscle car delivered to her just after New Years.”

“Where?”

“I have it somewhere upstairs. Fujimoto go get me the address.”

The thug named Fujimoto stepped out.

“With that said, you gonna give up your hunk of junk for this baby here?” he asked, “Hell, if you want I can throw in the LanEvo too. Tommi Makinen edition too you know. Not many of those around anymore you know?”

“No.”

Trick frowned. The thug came back with an address. It was meaningless to you at the moment.

“I see how it is,” he spoke, “You’re after the chick who’s after your ride is that it?”

Your silence was your answer.

“You have powerful friends VERDICT. That just means you have powerful enemies,” he smiled, “Course I hope you understand that there’s a price to doing business with people like us.”

He turned up towards the ceiling to right again.

“You don’t mind right?”

Kyouko looked down to the left of her feet.

“You can try,” was her reply.

Nayuta had messaged you to stall for time. Apparently the address was significant to her to warrant the mobilisation of Anti-Skill. They were coming down in five. As for Trick,

“Of course,” you agreed.

It took only a second to fasten your armband in position.

“I’m with Judgement.”

Underneath your helmet you cracked a smile. Then you sent Fujimoto in to a pile of rims. The other thug only had a second to act and he wasn’t nearly fast enough. He joined Fujimoto in unconsciousness as he was smashed against the workbench at an uncomfortable angle. Trick clicked his tongue as he backed up. You already knew his Ability. You didn’t even have to look it up. The clues had been pretty obvious. He was some kind of illusionist, limited as he was. Which was why you found it surprising that he was able to avoid the scything sweep of your stunwhip, if only by a hair. You switched to thermal just as the figure drew a handgun from his jacket.

The shots were wild but you took cover anyway. Kyouko seemed bored, buffing her nails as Trick laid down more fire. Shouting was heard from upstairs. The two of you were on opposite sides of the Bugatti with the stairs on your side and the elevator on Trick’s. Being in a wheelchair, there was really only one way out for him. More enemies were coming down but at their level it would be more of a massacre for them. Still you had to be cautious, even with a ballistic vest. CADRE suggested going for Trick, which had a high probably of nabbing him before the other thugs came down. The other was to deal with the thugs as they came and hoped you could race up the stairs fast enough. CADRE estimated a 40% chance of succeeding at that.

Rolled 53 (1d100)

Trick was an illusionist, and even with thermals helping, you weren’t going to let him remain conscious for much longer if you could help it. Despite holding his gun up, you reached across with the whip, smashing it away as you tackled him. He was already crippled so it wasn’t like a broken jaw was worth mentioning or anything. Another blow rendered him unconscious. That was when the elevator and stair case disgorged more thugs than you could shake a stick at. They were numerous and they were uncaring. Pistol, knife, chain, all sorts of improvised weapons were used as they hurled themselves at you.

As for Kyouko, she had taken a seat at one of the work benches, idly throwing wrenches in to your assailants’ plans. You were being literal in that description. CADRE drew upon its massive combat libraries as you never stopped. Each movement was both to defend and attack at the same time. They weren’t coordinated and in such a tight space the numbers worked against them. Their numbers also worked against you because the odds of you taking a hit grew. They were minor at first. A crack on your dome here, a small cut there, but eventually they managed to land something significant and your Overall Combat Efficiency dropped.

Nayuta and Kaoru found you kneeling over forty thugs. CADRE ran damage assessment. Your ribs had fractured in places though your spine was fine. The helmet display went fuzzy every so often, due to various impacts from bullets and blows. There was one major crack on your visor too. Your legs had taken more than a beating, being more vulnerable, and were leaking all sorts of vital fluids. It wasn’t immediately lethal thankfully. You were treated with some first aid before they could haul you out. The sudden influx of thugs was due to the encirclement of the Anti-Skill in the area. So in essence it was also Nayuta’s fault that you were so hurt.

You didn’t have time to bleed, so you would make do with your current state. The intel was important enough to merit Nayuta’s personal attention. That meant something Code M related was happening. It usually was pretty big.

“Status report?”

Nayuta sighed before reaching in to her backpack. She produced a print-out.

“The address is a maximum security facility,” she started, “It just so happens that tomorrow they’ll be transferring a VIP there.”

You read the name.

“Yes, our good friend Ben-jii,” she confirmed, “We knew he was going to be a target but now we know their timetable.”

“New Years day,” you answered.

“Right, but he’s one of many targets. I’m not even sure what kind of strike force is going to hit us then. Just this much forewarning will have to be enough,” she paused, “We’ll also need you on tap.”

Underneath your mask you grimaced.

“I’m not available.”

“Then make yourself available, or at least find some actionable intel so you can excuse yourself,” Nayuta commanded, “This is more than just about your family VERDICT. This is about the safety of the City itself.”

You gritted your teeth and accepted the leeway you had been given.

“As for you, Code M nee-chan, we need your help,” Nayuta began.

Kyouko just looked at her indifferently before replying,

“I made a deal. You don’t fuck with me, and I keep this shithole contained. So as fascinating as it is to play alien invaders, I ain’t gotta do fuck all to help. You got that Lil’ Missy?”

Now it was Nayuta’s turn to be upset. You could tell despite her somewhat cheery appearance. Still you,

Nayuta was right. The safety of the City would also affect your family. But you would be damned if you would not try to make it all work anyway. You weren’t content with either, you were going to have your cake and eat it too. First things first, you turned to Kyouko,

“Don’t you still owe me something?”

“Yeah, what about it?” she snapped.

“Do this for me and consider it paid in full,” you nodded to Nayuta.

“I’ll think about it.”

That was all you were going to get out of her so you moved on.

“Come on Kaoru, I need a second opinion,” you walked out.

The both of you got in to the car. You weren’t headed anywhere in particular just yet but it was nice to find a highway to stretch your legs on.

“The what, the who, the when, the where, the why,” Kaoru finally said, “We partially know what will happen, who are going to do it, and where. We know when they will strike. What we don’t know exactly is why.”

“An attack on the City must serve a purpose, I’m thinking jailbreak,” you posited, “Ben-jii considered himself one of the top five. The cabal he’s part of, they need him.”

“And those who knew Ben-jii will probably be the most helpful.”

That narrowed your choice down somewhat. There were two you could think of, just right off the top of your head. Sagara was one. He apparently had clashed with Ben-jii before. Surely he could give you some insight. The other was Ilija. She was a time traveller from the future. While Ben-jii had warned you of the dangers of seeking knowledge from the future but in this case it might be worth the risk.

You decided to play Ilija a visit. If there was a way to get me out of work, then she was my most likely bet. Even then you didn’t know the cost of her assistance, but that was something you were willing to pay. Assuming she didn’t lie and mislead you. That was also another risk you supposed but it was too late to back out now. While she was under house arrest, visitors were permitted. It didn’t look like she had many though.

She was in her kitchen, baking some scones. Tea had been served, two cups of it in fact. Another cup of chai was on the table. Such a blatant display and she still had the nerve to greet you with a,

“Oh the scones will be done in a bit, I expected you a bit later, onii-sama.”

You sat down, as did Kaoru. Ilija continued flitting about the kitchen humming.

“Great-grandmother’s recipe, I learned it from obaa-sama,” she explained as she too sat down after a fashion, “Now, what exactly is it that you wish to ask?”

Really, she shouldn’t be asking questions she already had answers to. Unless it was meant to confuse you, which was already achieved just thinking about it.

“If you told us, would that affect the future?” Kaoru asked bluntly.

“You aren’t meant to know,” Ilija answered, “Not unless you wish to meet a Time Paradogs. But you can ask me questions, just not about what things related to the future.”

“What about me?” you asked.

“Onii-sama gets one question about the future but there will be consequences,” she replied just as easily, “The Universe is self-correcting after all but the changes, the effects, they could take years to manifest, or even be so subtle I would not recognise it if I was not from the future.”

Her oven alarm went off.

“Take your time, think about it, onii-sama.”

She got up to see the scones.

To ask your question, Kaoru had to leave the room. Whatever you knew would have to be kept to yourself. Ilija had even disabled your helmet, though you suspected she could have done it at any time at all.

“Then, I want to ask about Ben-jii’s future. What happens to him?”

“That’s very broad, onii-sama,” she replied, “I’ll answer as best I can since I’ve never met him in person in my time. After all, he had died when my parents were infants. It was old age that took him. As for the specifics of the coming New Year, then he will be unfrozen and escape the city along with Ambrosia, in a rescue operation organised by Teacher.”

So Teacher was involved. Perhaps he was their ringleader? You could not be sure.

“It would be a specialist team composed of magicians who make use of Lycanthropy. They call themselves the Howling Commandos but further than that I cannot say. Afterwards, he would serve Teacher faithfully. He believed his actions saved the world. Historian still debate it.”

Now you had something actionable. Which lead to the question of whether you were going to prevent the attack itself, or let it be? After all if you didn’t make it your problem, then it simply would not be your problem.

“I cannot tell you what to do,” Ilija finally said, “because I can no longer predict the precise future. All that is left is for you to decide what to do on New Year’s Eve. That will determine the repercussions of your question.”

“I see,” you replied numbly.

“Now that you know,” she sipped her tea, “Was it worth it onii-sama?”

That was a question you didn’t have an answer to.

Episode End. No interlude tonight I haven’t prepared adequately.
