A mother is always proud of her children whatever shortcomings they may have, and while your soldiers are not well armored it has not come to be a disappointment. Merely a challenge in their upbringing, and perhaps it has been hard on your. Your very first brood of soldiers lasted mere seconds against the super-predator species you are not calling the KEEK, so since you cannot give your children metallic armor yet, to counter such an imbalance a new breed of soldier had be designed.

But you were only able to do so because the farm is completed and will yield fruits by tomorrow morning, and another farm is in construction, thus not feeling you you are going to starve, has allowed some reprieve. And you have used the time well, although your second design is a bit questionable, but a new flying drone was required. And the normal designs you posses in your genetic memory do not seem to be made for extreme cold climates. This does not matter, you will endure.

A drone designed for long flights in low atmosphere, its shape is reminiscent to a pillar with legs, it manages to fly by counter-rotating its wings creating lift, its low weight and density lend to its ability to fly if a bit ungracefully. It is designed to observe targets from high above, carry a small payload and deliver it with extreme precision.

Or even finished thinking up the next generation of warfighter. We only got as far as the scout's improvement before i had to sleep.

Could we PLEASE not randomly throw away our workforce? We can't even use DNA sampling until a day goes by and research opens up.

You send four of your worker drones by the crustaceans, it no longer interest you to eat the carrion but rather explore the nearby area. You see a lonely Keek nearby, it seems to be sorting the bone piles, wither bones are separated from those of lesser coloration. This is n intriguing act, and you cannot understand why this animal is doing this. But at any rate it does not seem to notice your drones, they have at the edge of the mountainous forest that surrounds the lake, so they should not be easily spotted.

If only you had scout drones now, at some risk you could try and use rapid hatching, but it would entail that some of the eggs laid would die, and you just cannot be sure that its worth the risk. Then again aerial surveillance and recon abilities would be of great use to the hive, if at the cost of many nutrients. You weight in your options and prepare to decide.

>Tell workers to go elsewhere

As a decision having some extra eggs ready is best, and so you decided to have three pairs or different drones just in case. Scouts, screw, and soldiers. This way you have a sort of back up plan in case anything happens, besides your hive is lacking when it comes to security, having a few soldiers would be for the best. For the moment it can't be helped, you just cannot feed an standing army, not that there are any real threats to you out there, the keeks are certainly something else, but nothing that should be worrisome once you have a good nutrient base.

Nutrients left: 159N
Nutrients: 76N
Net: 83N

You send your scouts out into the edges of the terrain you know, they encounter a creature with a spiked back, it seems to stand on two legs, right now its sharpening its claws (which you estimate to be 8 inches long) on the bark of nearby trees. Its truly a magnificent specimen, one you had yet to encounter before, it has so far not noticed the presence of your drones.

The creature is about 10 feet tall when standing up on two legs, it seems to alternate positions frequently. So it does not appear to always be a biped. You have the drones move closer for observation, the animal responds to your presence. It stands on its back legs and raises its front paws, it looks rather menacing this way. But it does not make a move against your drones for now, you have it surrounded.

In the distance you can hear a whooshing sound like a waterfall, but your drones can't make it out all that clearly. Many of the nearby trees have the marking of this animal, it seems to constantly sharpen its claws, almost ritualistically. You wonder what this creature eats, it could be of use tot he hive after all, you never know when another source of nutrients could be of use.

Perhaps this specimen will yield a number research options, just looking at its scales and spikes, you know that there are little secrets waiting to be discovered. So you order the drones to capture it with expedience. The animal tries to fight back but your drones are far too fast, they quickly subdue the beast and have it immobilized. It tries trashing about but to no avail, satisfied with the capture you have them return to the hive.

The sentries outside notice a massive number of blurring shapes scattering about in the sky, some sort of ultra fast avian? You are not sure, each one seems to take off in a random direction away from the others, and just like that your sentries lose sight of them. Its a strange event, sure but nothing that you can do about it.

The workers drones are making good headway back to the cave, when they hear the all too familiar call. “KEEK, KEEK.” It a ways off, it does not seem directed to your drones, but then again these animals have proven to be intelligent, they could be setting up a sort of trap or ambush. What would you have your drones do.

Carrying the animals back to the hive takes the better part of two hours, and during that time a disturbing number of blurred shaped kept on crossing the skies above your drones, making a whistling sound as they passed. But while this new development was something of an oddity it did not affect your travels, you did not hear any more keeks, or other animals for that matter. It was as if the forest was now a tomb, the sky got clouded, and a storm seemed to be approaching, your drones made it into the hive just before the storm started.
