RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/SeV4Mmqv

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

You yawn as you lazily play around with the pancake on your plate, not quite having the energy to actually start eating it yet. It had been a terribly long and hectic night, and frankly, you were pretty surprised you had gotten any sleep at all. Amy similarly looked completely beat. Lilian tried to appear dignified as usual, but it was clear to you that she wasn't at 100% either. Only Lara seemed to be unaffected. You were slightly jealous at how she managed to have infinite stores of energy.

Meanwhile, the Butterflies, who had tagged along with their boss for a business meeting, were fast asleep in their barracks. Seemed to you that sleeping in was quite the rare luxury for them.

"Jeez, Karla, why didn't you tell us about them earlier?" Lara grins. "They're great!"

"Dunno. Didn't cross my mind." You shrug.

"Still, kinda weird that they're all still kids." Amy frowns. "Aren't they bit young to be flying planes?"

"I was barely out of high school when I flew my first combat mission." You point out. "And PMCs have much more flexible recruiting standards, I imagine."

"Mmmm, there might be more to it, than that." Lilian adds in. "But I suppose that's something we'd have to ask them ourselves."

"Excuse me, ladies."

The four of you turn your heads to see Jonathan Irons, CEO of Atlas Corporation and a multibillionaire, standing in front of you with a tray of mess hall food in hand, looking like it was just another day in the office. Farther back, you could see a very nervous Samantha peeking around the corner to try and figure out what's going on.

"Mind if I take a seat?" The CEO grins.

"Um, sure." You nod, scooting your chair aside to make space.

For a CEO with a net worth of billions, Irons seemed to treat sitting down at a cafeteria table as the most regular thing in the world. However, you weren't quite sure if he was actually this down to earth, or if it was just a front to get you to lower your guard. Either way, he looked very comfortable.

"Now, I've heard quite a bit about you four." Irons smiles. "Your suppression of the Yuktobanian rebels, intercepting that Blackbird, that rather exciting airshow over Directus, and now the feats you performed in Kasna. Amazing. Simply amazing."

"You seem to know quite a bit about us." You eye Irons warily.

"I have an eye for talent." He smiles. "You know other pilots are starting to call you the Wild Cards now? They seem to think your presence on a mission gives them good luck!"

"My, how interesting." Lilian beams.

"Whoa, really?" Amy blinks.

"I'm telling the truth here." Irons nods and turns an eye to you. "Quite a shame that Artemis got to you first, but that's how the game is played."

"I suppose." You shrug.

"Still, since we're here, how would you all like to join Atlas?" Irons smiles. "Better pay, with access to top the line tech. How about it?"

You look to your wingmates, who seem to have been equally caught off guard.

"Sorry, not interested." You say simply but politely.

"Ah, shame." Irons smiles, not looking disappointed at all. "But you've got loyalty, and I respect that. Not a lot of mercenaries have that quality."

"Even yours?" You ask.

"Well, my philosophy is to treat my soldiers like how I'd treat my own children. Show that you'd be willing to go the ends of the earth for them, and they'll do the same for you." He says as he takes a bit out of his pancake.

Well, you had to admit, that did sound like a pretty good way to run a company, and it seemed consistent with his behavior so far.

"So what brings you to Artemis, then?" You ask. "From what I hear of your company, you've got practically everything."

"Except for experienced pilots." Irons sighs. "We may have one of the largest standing armies of any PMC, but we missed out on the piloting boom, so to speak, and we're currently in need of good pilots."

"Really now?" Lilian raises an eyebrow. "Are you sure you should be telling us this?"

"Well, since I'm the CEO proposing the deal, I believe I have some leeway in telling others about it." Irons chuckles. "Currently, Atlas has been contracted by a mining consortium attempting to extract minerals from Area B7R. I believe you all know where that place is."

The entire table falls quiet. To all pilots, Area B7R, or the Round Table, was considered hallowed ground, since some of the largest and most epic aerial battles had taken place there, and were the popular stalking grounds of Cipher, arguably one of the greatest fighter pilots ever to fly. There was a reason why he was also called the Demon Lord of the Round Table.

"Really." You whistle. "But why would you need us out in a place like that? It's practically a wasteland out there."

"Well, you'd think we'd be left well enough alone out there, but unfortunately, our client has quite a few rivals staking out their own claims, and they've hired their own mercenaries as well."

"So basically we'd be fighting a proxy war between corporations?" You raise an eyebrow. "What does Osea have to say about that?"

"What can they do?" Irons chuckles darkly. "B7R may as well be the Wild West. No laws apply there except for the ones set by the guy with the biggest gun, and I intend to be that guy. However, to control the Round Table, you need air superiority, which is where you come in."

"Well, if you want, you can ask her right now." You point to where Samantha is not so subtly eavesdropping on your conversation.

"Oh, hello!" Irons waves to her. "Care to join us?"

"Ah, um, sure." Samantha mumbles, now totally caught and sheepishly sits at the table.

"So I assume you've heard everything so far." Irons says.

"I more or less got the gist." Samantha says neutrally.

"Come on. Atlas is willing to pay a considerable fee for your company's services. Far more than the pittance the Osean and Yuktobanian governments are willing to part with." Irons grins. "And your company will also get a stake in our client's mining operations in B7R. We're talking about mineral rights for rare ores like gold, titanium, aluminum, rare earth metals, and uranium here! There's vast, untapped potential under that desert!"

"I'll talk to Mr. DeWinter about it." Samantha sighs. "Though I can't promise anything."

"That's all I'm asking." Irons smiles. "Actually, there was one more thing. I was wondering if you'd be willing to allow for a little training exercise between my squadron and yours?"

"What kind of exercise?" Samantha asks.

"Just a little contest between your Wild Cards and my Butterfiles." Irons explains. "You know, little bit of icebreaking between pilots."

"Hm, I'd need to ask my pilots about that." Samantha's eyes fall upon you. "What do you think?"

"We'd love to." You smile. "Those girls could always use some more experience."

"Excellent!" Irons claps his hands together. "How soon can you arrange it?"

"We can probably get things set up this afternoon." Samantha sighs. "Though that depends, do you want to do this as an adverserial or co-op exercise? Co-op means you and the Butterflies just compete to destroy the most targets in a shared pool. I'm pretty sure 'adversarial' explains itself."

"So, Samantha, what do you think about Irons and Atlas?" You ask your boss as you all head towards the hangar. "You didn't seem too thrilled talking to him."

"Ah, well, I don't really trust him, but that's pretty much my regular policy with CEOs." Samantha shrugs. "I mean, you don't become the head of a multbillion dollar company without stepping over a few corpses, you know what I mean?"

"So you're saying that Irons is evil?" Lara gasps. "He seemed like a pretty cool guy to me."

"Well, I'm not saying he's EVIL, or a bad guy in general." Samantha shakes her head. "But what I AM saying is that you shouldn't take his words at face value."

"What about the company itself?" You ask.

"Well, it's pretty legitimate, as far as I can tell." Samantha grunts. "A lot of fingers in a lot of pies, though. You know that 'client' Irons was talking about? That mining consortium? Turns out he owns it, too. Atlas Mining Development."

"Whoa, I didn't know that." You frown. "Does him keeping that from us mean anything?"

"I hope not." Samantha sighs. "Anyways, we should be getting to the hangar now."

Already, the hangar was a flurry of activity as Smokey and his techs were getting Lara's Eagle and your Falcon prepped.

"Hey! Just in time!" Smokey grunts. "You want the 4AAMs or the QAAMs mounted?"

You pause to think. The 4AAMs would definitely give you additional weight of fire, but the QAAMs would give each individual missile a better chance of hitting.

"You got any tips?" You ask as you start putting on your flight gear. "Anything particular about the Nosferatu that can help us?"

"Well..." Lara puts a finger to her chin as she tries to recall a past battle. "At the very least, the Butterflies aren't going to have fifty fucking million UCAVs spamming missiles at us. As for the plane itself, it goes fast, and turns even faster. Goddamn nightmare in a turning fight."

"Any weaknesses?"

"Well, its design makes it inherently unstable. It bleeds a hell of a lot of energy in turns so it's really damn easy to stall, even if you're an expert." Lara says.

Hm, that was pretty helpful.

"All right, let's get these birds moving!" Smokey barks. "Go go go!"

You and Lara jog over to your planes and hop into the cockpits. You begin to taxi out the main runway, where you can see two of the Butterfly Nosferatus pulling out of their hangar as well.

>>

Taking them by surprise gives us the opportunity to end the exercise quickly, because they're inexperienced.

No, and here's why. Our opponent's planes bleed speed like a bitch. By going high, they have another source of energy to convert into speed. Thus, we cannot take full advantage of the energy advantage, as they can disengage and regain their energy advantage.
As for worrying about them crashing into the ground, you'd have to be flying VERY low for that to happen. Further, in advanced planes there is auto stall recovery, which only takes a few hundred feet.

Again, it's not necessarily the most efficient option (not that it's a poor option, still), but it's just an exercise.

You fighters strain to keep their climb rate, but you can see that the Butterflies are keeping pace with you as well. You glance at your altimeter and grimace when you see that your reaching the edges of your performance ceiling. You're not too sure how high the Nosferatus go, but with their unstable characteristics, they had to be pushing their limits, as well.

Well, fairly sure.

You grit your teeth and keep the nose pointed up, pushing as much power out of your engine as possible.

You both dive down, angling for the Butterfly that didn't stall. Neither of you could go for the stalled one without risking the second one diving down on your asses. Might as well press your numbers advantage while the other one was out.

The Butterfly seems to notice this and begins to initiate a steep dive, no doubt to try to get enough airspeed to get out of weapons range. Well, you couldn't let that happen!

You see your 2 missiles and one QAAM streak out. Your regular missiles gain positive lock and begin tracking, despite the Butterfly's launch of countermeasures. However, you see Lara's missiles and your QAAM fly off course.

But it's not enough. You see one of your missiles pierce the cloud of chaff and flares and explode against the Butterfly's left engine, spattering bright orange paint all over the rear of the plane.

"Echo has been shot down." Loki announces. "Good shooting, Valkyrie."

"Thanks." You glance at your radar. "Stripes, you got eyeballs on Dawn?"

"She's trying to get on our six!" Lara warns.

"How about we teach her one of the classics?" You grin. "Let's show her the Thach Weave."

"Wow, granny, I'm surprised you know that one!" Lara chuckles.

"I had a good teacher." You respond. "Let's see what they teach nuggets these days."

With that, both you and Lara split off, with her Eagle breaking left and your Falcon breaking right. You see Dawn vectoring in on Lara's tail, taking the obvious bait.

"Hook line and sinker." Lara laughs. "Reel her in, Valk!"

Now, both you and reverse your direction so now instead of turning away from each other, you both were now turning towards each other. If done right, you would be able to get a quick deflection shot at Dawn as she tried to lock onto Lara.

You wait for the exact moment Lara's Eagle darts past your crosshairs before pulling the trigger. A stream of bullets shoots out, spattering a long line of paint down the spine of Dawn's Nosferatu as you literally walk the bullets across the entire length of the craft.

"That's a kill. Butterfly flight is down." Loki says. "Exercise complete."

"Awwwww nuts!" You hear Dawn sigh. "Looks like we still got a lot to learn..."

"You sure do." You grin. "Especially if you fell for one of the oldest maneuvers in the book."

"But don't get me wrong! We'll beat you someday and become the best aces in the world!" Dawn boasts.

"Hah, those are pretty big words for a nugget." You chuckle.

"Yeah, especially since me and Valk here are gonna be the best!" Lara backs you up. "If you wanna come at us you gotta come with everything you go!"

"Maybe we will." Echo says coolly.

"All right, all right." You laugh as the Butterflies form up behind you. "Come on, let's head home."
