Your physical body feels unpleasant to be in when compared to your Shinigami form. This body lied completely still for several hours, but even when you manage to get over the numbness, it’s still far worse. Every movement feels sluggish and restrictive. Breathing doesn’t come as naturally and easily as before. Everything feels... heavier, as if air has gained weight, or like the gravity has suddenly gotten stronger.

They are very strange sensations. You didn’t pay any attention to your ‘breathing’ while out on patrol, or even during the fight. It didn’t even cross your mind that you needed to do that as a spirit, so you must have been doing it without thinking... if at all. You’ll have to confirm your need to breathe the next time you’re out of your body.

...Though, you can’t really sleep like this. The body-swapping left you uncomfortable, you don’t feel tired at all, and it’s too late - the sun will be rising in just a couple of hours. It’ll take too long to fall asleep, and then that’ll leave you with an hour or two before you have to wake up again. That’s a great way to feel like utter crap, so you'll pass.

You head downstairs to grab a snack, feeling hungry. Your fridge shouldn’t be occupied -only- by rice and mayonnaise, after all.

You spot someone in the dark, sitting at the kitchen table, sipping tea and eating tea cakes. It’s Paul, your brother.

“Didn’t expect to see you out of your room so late, especially while Aiko’s living with us. Well, take a seat. I’ll make you some tea.” He says, setting his cup down and standing up.

>“Why are you sitting here in the dark? Turn the damn lights on, I can’t see a thing.”
>”...Especially with Aiko here? What do you mean by that?”
>”Trouble sleeping?”
>Just sit down and let him make you some tea. You’re not really in the mood to talk.

“Why are you sitting here in the dark? Turn the damn lights on, I can’t see a thing.”

“I wasn’t looking at anything, so I had no reason for them to be on. And besides, it’s always a good idea to save us some money on the electricity bill.”

You’re not some kind of vampire, and it would be kind of weird to hold a conversation in the dark, so you flip the switch. You both hiss in unison at the sudden flash of light.

“There... much better.” You say, keeping your eyes squinted, and take a seat at the table. Paul steps away to prepare you some tea. You grab one of the little tea cakes and throw it into your mouth. It’s a bit sweet, but otherwise tasteless. It would probably be okay with tea, but you’d rather eat a candy or something.

“...Wait. What did you mean with your ‘especially with Aiko here’?” You ask him. He puts a steaming cup in front of you before heading back to his seat.

“I’ve seen you with that girl several times in the past. I could pretty easily gather that you were, well, quite close. And the last time I’ve been in your room, I only saw one place to sleep on, so that’s why I assumed that...”

“Okay, stop. Nice one, detective. Your assumption is totally wrong, though.”

“So it would seem. Well, either way, I don’t really mind. That’s your business. Mother and father might, though. This isn’t permanent, is it?”

“I told you before; this’ll take a week at most. When they come back, they won’t even know she was here.”

“Is she an underclassman, that Aiko of yours?”

“No, she’s same grade, different class. She’s in C.”

“Can’t say I’ve noticed her much when she wasn't with you.”

“Well, Aiko was-... I mean, she is a shy person. Not part of any clubs, doesn’t really hang out with anyone after school...”

>>
>>37748692
You eat another tea cake, this time downing it with your drink. It’s... better, but you’d still rather have something else. Paul seems to agree.

“They’re pretty boring, aren’t they? There’s an awful lot of things in these parts that are an ‘acquired taste’.”

“Are you going on a rant about Japan again?”

“I’ve just returned from our motherland - as you can see, the timezone difference is getting to me - so, naturally, I’m in the mood for one.”

“Yup, I guess I’ll go for a walk after all...”

“...Fine, I digress. Sit back down; it’s unspeakably boring on my own, here.”

The two of you spend about a minute in silence, simply drinking tea.

“Today’s the last day of summer vacation,” Paul reminds you, as if you’d forget. “Excited for school?”

“About as much as you’d expect - not nearly as much as you, but I am looking forward to seeing some of my classmates again. Haven't seen any of 'em the whole month."

“I hope you plan on improving your grades this year.”

>”My grades are As and Bs, and almost always fair and square. I don’t need improvement.”
>”I’m not spectacular or anything, but I don’t have any problems, either. I don’t need improvement, it’s fine as is.”
>”Meh, they're good enough to pass, so as long as that’s the case, I don’t need higher grades.”

"Cheating" isn't really the same in a lot of Asia, or in a lot of the world in general.

In China and Japan, collusion is quite common and even expected. In Italy, nobody gives a rat's ass whether you cheat or not, even in University.

In Japanese universities it's more serious business, and in Chinese universities it's only specific things that *we* consider cheating that nobody cares about.

In Italy, do whatever you want and turn it in a month late, nobody cares.

”My grades are As and Bs, and almost always fair and square. I don’t need improvement.” You lean back in your seat, crossing your arms behind your head.

“That ‘almost’ is what bothers me, Clarissa.”

“Come on. You can’t expect everyone to be a straight A-grade student just because you are one.”

“I’m not expecting everyone to be like that, but you’re not just anyone, you know. You’re... well, you’re my sister.”

“Even if they caught me cheating, they wouldn’t do anything to you. Besides, I don’t cheat that often. You’re making it seem like that’s the only reason I even get by at all.”

“I’m only concerned because grades are important, and cheating isn’t taken lightly in these parts.” Paul frowns as he lifts his teacup. It’s empty, so he sets it back down.

“Well, I’m telling you that it’ll be fine,” You smoothly slide him your own empty cup across the table. He picks both up, heading towards the kitchen sink. “You really need to be less stuck up about things, Paul. You still don’t even have a girlfriend, do you?”

“I’m not ‘stuck up’. I’m simply concerned about my own future, and I’m working towards making sure that it won’t be taking place here, in Japan. Life here has been keeping me very motivated to work hard, you know. I swear, if I have to stay here for even ten more years, I’m going to-”

“You’re ranting again.”

Paul interrupts himself with a cough, sitting back down.

“I suppose as long as your grades remain just as they are, it’s fine,” He pauses. “...And I don’t need a girlfriend. The student council president loves taking up most of my time already. Honestly, she’s so helpless without me; I don’t even know why she decided to take on the role.”

(1/3)
>>
>>37750307
You smirk. “Oh? It almost sounds like you two are-...”

“You can stop right there. Your assumption is totally wrong.”

“Heh, well, why aren’t you the president if you ‘do everything’, then?”

“I don’t enjoy the spotlight. I’m fine as is. And don’t you even think of accusing me of shyness,” He frowns again. “And besides, who would want a foreigner in that kind of position?”

“You kidding me? Everyone would. I don’t really know how you manage not to notice it all the time, but girls are all over you -because- you’re a foreigner. They totally dig that stuff. I would know.” You find yourself smiling; a reminiscent, cocky sort of smile.

Though, you were actually pretty unlucky most of the time when it came to girls, and Aiko was your first and only partner, but it’s not as if you didn’t get a little special treatment because you were thought of as exotic.

And you are also naturally blonde. That helped, too. Paul dyed his hair black to fit in better, but it didn’t really decrease his popularity.

“I don’t know how you manage to neglect all the boys, either, but you don’t see me complaining.”

“Really? I mean, Aiko didn’t give it away?” You grin at him.

“...Right. I somewhat regret saying that. Well, it’s almost 4 in the morning. I don’t suppose you’d be up for a board game.”

“There’s a lot of time to waste ahead of us. Bring it on.”

...
>>
>>37750351
You lost a lot. Paul is pretty good at everything that doesn’t rely on just rolling dice, and he refused playing anything that does.

He actually cooked proper meals for you rather than sentence you to rice and mayonnaise, as he said he would.

“First day of school is tomorrow, so I’d like you to load up on energy and not have any excuses to skip. Today will be the only exception, though. Your punishment for lying will continue afterwards.” Is what Paul said, or something along those lines.

The day went by surprisingly quickly. You and Paul spent the time playing games and watching movies. You ended up going to your room only in the evening, when Paul couldn’t keep his eyes open anymore.

On your bed lies Kimiko, the Shinigami you are meant to be substituting, occupying the dead body of your girlfriend. She’s sleeping on the covers of your bed, still wearing a summer dress. Must have fainted when she returned.

Her cellphone is on the floor. The ripped remains of a small package are lying nearby, alongside a battery for the phone.

You look at the clock. It’s probably time to go out on a patrol, but Kimiko’s sleeping pretty peacefully; probably her first time in several days. You’re feeling pretty tired after an all-nighter, too, and you’ve got school tomorrow, so...

>Go to sleep. You all earned some rest.

It's going to be something contrived, or an accident, or in an argument we straight up murdered our lover over bullshit.

>>

Yeah. It’s time to rest.

...Kimiko ignored the futon you laid out for her, and occupied your bed instead. That’s pretty annoying. But with how tired you are, even this japanese pseudo-bed on the floor looks incredibly inviting. You hastily undress and plop down, almost immediately falling into another dreamless sleep.

...

“Wake up! It’s time for school, Clarissa!” Paul yells through the door. He also gives it a few knocks, maybe to make sure that you get up, or something. He usually always enters your room to wake you up, and he turns on all the lights and pushes aside all the curtains, and then pulls your covers from you if you still don’t get up, all while yelling a lot.

Can’t really pull something like that with Aiko around, though. Thank god.

You stand up, actually feeling quite refreshed. The girl on your bed sits up, though she looks sleepy and confused. She picks up her phone, flipping it open.

“This thing didn’t beep, did it?..” She mutters, to which you shake your head. She lies back down on your bed and stretches herself out, yawning. The girl then sits up again, smiling. “Ah, that’s right. I’m a school student, so I should go and study, too.”

“Just say that you’re sick and you don’t have to go.”

“No, no, I’ve never been to a school as a student before. I want to go.”

“You really shouldn’t. It’s not as cool as you seem to think. Besides... it’ll be weird if you turn up acting all different, I mean, not like Aiko. So don’t.”

“No, no, it’ll be fine. I know how to be discreet. And I’m a good actress. It’s a bit of a hobby of mine. And I’m a quick learner, and I’m very adaptive, so I’ll manage it just fine, you don’t even need to tell me anything about her if you don’t want to. And besides, people believe what’s convenient for them to believe. I’m sure no one will even notice. I’ll manage!”

“No.”

“Oh, come on. I really want to know what it’s like to be a real student. I’m over a hundred years old, and I’ve never been to a real world school, and that’s just not normal, don’t you think? So, please? Besides, it’s not like it wouldn’t be suspicious if I didn’t turn up, so...”

>”No. I’ll tell Paul you’re not feeling well, and that you’re staying at home today.”
>”...Fine, fine, shut up. You can go to school with me. As long as you do as I say and don’t try anything weird.”

”...Fine, fine, shut up. You can go to school with me. As long as you do as I say and don’t try anything weird.”

“Yes! Thank you, Clarissa! And I promise I’ll be good.”

“Don’t yell. Anyway, Aiko is... she’s a shy person. So, like, if you just keep quiet and don’t talk to anyone, they shouldn’t notice anything. Uh... when they’ll be checking who’s absent, keep your ears open and try to remember everyone’s name. What else..?” You scratch your head. Kimiko is still smiling. Is she even listening? She nods her head a few times as soon as you give her a questioning look.

“Oh, right. People at school, they don’t... they don’t really know about my and Aiko’s relationship. Some people have rumors, but deny them if they crop up. We’re in different classes, so we probably won’t be meeting face to face, and right now, that’s probably for the best.”

“I wouldn’t really mind pretending to be your girlfriend,” The girl smiles mischievously. You don’t know whether to smile or cringe, feeling the need to do both, so you don’t reply. “Though, if a Hollow pops up, we’ll need to take care of it.”

“And skip school? That wasn’t really part of the deal, Kimiko.”

“As long as you don’t mess up, it probably won’t take long. Just say that you need to go to the bathroom or something like that, I’m sure it’ll be fine.”

“...You’ll need to safeguard my body while I’m out, if that happens.”

“Don’t worry about it, I will.” The girl chuckles.

That giggle doesn’t sound trustworthy.

After a meal of riceballs and tea, you head to school. Kimiko refuses to stop smiling like an idiot, apparently extremely happy about going to school. The dumb, overly cheerful and enthusiastic smile is pretty out of the ‘humble and shy girl’ character, and not what Aiko usually looks like at all. ‘Good actress’, she said.

One of Aiko’s classmates approaches her, and asks what she’s feeling so happy about. The first thing she asks, as bluntly as possible, is the guy’s name. ‘Very adaptive’, she said.

She follows you everywhere, even though you’ve told her not to. When the bell rings, she tries to follow you into your class, even though you told her where her class is. ‘Quick learner’, she-

“Stop following me!” You hiss at her through your teeth, trying your best not to be too loud about it. “Your class is there!” You point down the hallway. Kimiko chuckles and walks away, and...

...And enters your class through the second door. She giggles again after realizing her mistake, but slips away before she attracts too much attention.

You sigh. But, at the very least, it doesn’t seem like anyone gave it much attention, so-

“Clarissa.” Someone standing by your desk calls your name, and you recognize the dull voice and that blunt way of greeting a person.

“Huh? Hey, Naoko.”

“You haven’t been at the dojo all month. Are you going today?”

You turn towards the girl. Short black hair, gloomy, serious expression, athletic build... She’s the same as always. You’re not really friends, just... sparring partners. She’s slightly better than you as a fighter, which means that she’s really good. This girl doesn’t seem to hang out with anyone, including you (outside of the dojo), and you don’t really know much about her. You’re not really friends because she doesn’t want to do anything when you ask her to, and she’s not cute enough for you to go out of your way for.

It’s a little surprising and disappointing that she’s the first classmate you end up seeing.

“Sure, I guess. Been busy all month. Same time as usual, after school?”

She nods. Without another word, she walks away.

Only after that do the rest of your classmates approach to talk to you. It’s almost as if they’re afraid of Naoko, like she’d punch through their skulls if they interrupted her, or something. No, she can’t do that, but her punches do hurt, and you’ve never really seen her act aggressive towards anyone. She’s kind of gloomy and boring, but not... scary.

Today’s topics were exactly as you anticipated: ‘Where were you all month?’, ‘Why didn’t you hang out with us all month?’, ‘We couldn’t find you anywhere all month!’...

It was a little tiring, mainly because you had to avoid giving the real answers.

“I really wanted to go with you to Suzu-chan’s concert. You know who that is, right? The idol that performed in Karakura Town not so long ago. It was an amazing show, and I got really mad that you weren’t around for it.” Ren, the friend who you’d probably call your ‘best’ if you absolutely had to pick, seems to be the most disappointed out of the small crowd surrounding your seat.

She especially shows it by not inviting you to lunch. It’s the sort of harmless passive-aggressiveness you can’t even be mad at, and one that you probably deserve for having neglected your friends so much. You are still going to go after her, but it does sting a little bit.

Or you were planning to go after her. Kimiko suddenly barges into the classroom, brandishing the boxed lunch in your old pink lunchbox that Paul prepared for her. She’s still beaming with that dumb, unfitting smile.

(1/2)
>>
>>37755495
“Go away. I’m heading to the roof to have lunch with my friends. Unless it’s a Hollow, then don’t-“ You try to shoo her away, because there’s no telling how this might affect your reputation, but she doesn’t even wait for you to finish.

“It is a Hollow!” She exclaims. She continues in a hushed tone. “Sit down so that we can talk about it.”

You look at her skeptically, but sit down at your seat, regardless. The girl slides a chair next to your desk with a loud grind and sets down her lunch box. She then opens it, takes out a pair of chopsticks, and starts to eat.

“...The Hollow, Kimiko.” You remind her.

“Hm? Oh,” She takes out her cellphone, flips it open, and takes a glance. “...Hmm, nothing on it right now. But I’m sure it’ll appear at any moment now. You eat, too, while we wait.”

She then smiles again and continues with her meal. The few people remaining in the classroom for lunch are glancing your way. They converse in hushed voices, trying to keep their gossiping hidden. But you’re looking right at them. You’re not even a lip-reader, but you can easily tell what they’re saying.

You see Naoko leave after shooting Kimiko the most suspecting glare. The would-be Shinigami doesn’t notice. Naoko stands up afterwards, probably leaving to have her lunch elsewhere.
