Volume I: Path to Immortality

Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You communed with the spirit of the orcish demonologist and learned a little about demons. You made sure avoiding learning any of the actual magic involved. You also learned that the orcs keep human slaves, and decided to liberate them. You gathered your allies, approaching the elves first and gnolls second, and between them and your undead you raised an army larger than any you had ever heard of. The battle was hard for the elves, but you and the gnolls cleaned house, killing every orc you could find. You had a revelation on the battlefield. Upon freeing the slaves you found that you knew two of them- elderly ladies by names of Ragda and Gerda. You lent the remaining eight liberated slaves the cave you had lived before finding the ruins, but Ragda and Gerda chose to stay with you in the ruins. This is where the sixth installment of Feral Necromancer Quest ended.

You are becoming a dominant force in the region. Expansion and/or exploration is recommended sooner or later.

You have 1 point of exp saved up. Last session you leveled up Alchemy to 3. Between the skill, intelligence bonus and dragon blood you are rolling at a +6, making critical failures impossible.

>>A memory of a dream from between chapter V and VI<<

You called rain for your tribe for the first time today. You teacher didn't show it, but you know he was proud of you. What is more, for only the second time in your life you have crossed paths with another human tribe. The trade and information is always worth it, but what you care most about are the people. Between your two tribes there are nearly forty. More than you are used to seeing in one place by far.

You see a young woman, not much older than you among them. She is telling tales you cannot make out from a distance. Everyone around her is laughing, sighing and in suspense at the right moments.

She has coal black hair, her skin is a shade darker than yours. She wears clothes made out of the furs of several wolves. She is more beautiful than anything you had ever seen before. She feels familiar, and you feel a little melancholy seeing her, though you do not know why.

You are to be the shaman of your people. You have been taught from a young age to speak impressively and confidently, to best carry your message and to best influence the elders. Now you feel like you were born with a foot in your mouth, and left for the wolves. You walk awkwardly, you do not know what to say, but you know you must say something. Your teacher would remind you that unions of strange tribes makes for the strongest children, then elbow you in the ribs and laugh.

You have never been more thankful he is not around.

You walk up to the girl and you just stand there. There are four more eligible men around her, clearly amused by your stories. But she speaks to you.

'I am Bathory, what's your name?'
'Vlad. I...'

Years pass. Bathory is laying on the floor of the plain. You are sitting next to her, dread in your expression that you cannot hide. It is not just a cold. She is growing weaker every day.

'Vlad, I am so sorry we never had babies.'
'As soon as you get well, love.'
She coughs. And smiles.

Weeks pass.

You are standing above Bathory's body. Nothing makes sense. There has been some horrible mistake. The world does not work like this. She must be alive, it is just her body that has failed.

Just the body.

The spirit is still in there.

You bind her to her skull. You cannot let her go.

Time stops.

You hear a voice.

'See, this is where I got you.'
'Who is it? What is happening?'
'Your magic. It is not like the magics of other mages. Nor am I as petty as a demon that bargains for a soul. I am a god.'
'Bullshit. It is my magic, extension of my shaman training.'
'No, it is not.'

>'What does this mean?'

'Get away! It is my own magic and you will have no impact in my life!'

'But I already do.'

'Yeah? So prove it!'

'This is a dream. You could write off anything I do as your imagination.'

'Prove it.'

The dreamscape shifts. The skies turn red, the ground turns black. There are thousands, tens of thousands of dead standing around you. A massive figure, naked skeleton with a black scythe is dominating the landscape. It speaks.

'In your next great battle you will learn more of MY magic, whether you try to or not.'

You woke up.

It happened just as the entity had said. It might have been your subconsciousness, of course. You hope it was, but you are far from certain. It might be worthwhile to look into the gods that the ancient civilizations worshiped.

Nonetheless, you are in your ruin, although you are restoring it day by day and soon you won't be able to call it that. Many duties call to you.Tomorrow. You go to sleep, and wake up without further intrusion in your dreams.

You are in a well established position. There is plenty of food, shelter and water here. Not to mention the library and your allies. You decide to let some time pass, there is much you should do around the ruin before you make any further plans. A month passes, during which you:

>Train Lathrien
>Learn of the fate of your old tribe from Ragda and Gerda
>Reinforce and renovate the ruin
>Research magic
>Research religion
>Research basketweaving

The library is massive and finally you have the time to delve in the stacks properly. You read a large number of books on necromancy, and try to learn a bit more about pyromancy, although it is a nightmare to find any coherent notes about the volatile form of magic.

17 Marginal failure- the worst kind of failure.

First you need more power. Pyromancy makes little sense to you still. Necromancy is clear, but it is also clear that the advancement beyond your current level would require more experience and training, and not just what you can read in books. There are some notes about a darker force guiding necromancers, but nothing specific. You would dismiss it entirely, if not for that dream you had.

While you are fairly certain you understand the theory of transferring souls from one vessel to another, you make little actual progress in your mastery of necromancy over the month. It is somewhat irksome, but perhaps having a more solid theoretical grounding is going to pay off later.

I'll go with reinforce and renovate for now, as it could cover a few of the other options, and there really doesn't seem to be a consensus forming.

In your research you kept coming across ancient building techniques, lost arts of engineering and construction. While the magic is keeping the ruin safely together, you cannot rely on that forever. You think you should reinforce the walls and renovate it to suit your purposes better. You do not have great tools for such work, but you have better than nothing.

19! Decent success.

You have a workforce of tireless, obedient undead at your call. They turn out to be the perfect workers, even if the tools are not ideal for the work they are doing. The rooms, the halls and the hallways are all cleared of rubble, and repaired to the best of your ability.

The doors that had rotten away you replace by doors of strong, solid pine. They would not keep a siege at bay, but they are much safer than open doorways.

Most importantly, the place starts feeling less like a ruin and more like a dwelling. You know it well now and it has become light, warm and comfortable. All of your living allies feel much more at ease in the place.

Alchemy seems to be the best way to create a body for Bathory. You actually believe you have some of the theory down for creating a homunculus, but for now the materials required to create a full human body are very prohibitive. You are going to have to do some exploration, possibly even some mining to find everything you would need for something as large and complicated as that. Nonetheless, you need practice. Theory will only get you so far.

Still think a humanoid is a better test. as it is the elf would likely stumble around completely confused. It'd be in the body and senses of a dog. Hell what little crap is left of its mind might break to that.

No big loss but it'd probably make for loss of a dog and I'm not wanting that. fluffy dog to be companion and possibly save us at critical moments!
>>
>>37756261
Well what I was thinking was this one would just be a dog, then the next one we stuff the elf into. If he can still think and we still control him then cool and if we cant then nothing of importance was lost. Then we can see about the others.
>>
Okay, I THINK I'm getting bind the elf, and it's kinda my favourite choice.

On the one hand, you feel that it could be nice having just a simple pet around. On the other, you are experimenting with the goal of giving Bathory a living body and that requires learning both to create a body and to transfer a soul to it. The elf will just have to get used to it if it works. If it doesn't well, you were considering setting his soul free in either case.

If it fails you can still program the dog to be a dog.

'Elf, I am going to give you a body. It is not humanoid, but you will be able to move about at least.'

'What will you turn me into?'

'A dog.'

'I see. It could be a lot worse. Please get me out of here.'

I almost feel bad for him. At this rate though he'll make an excellent test subject for human transference and he'd probably be useful if he minds his manners and is grateful.

at that point we'd basically resurrect the son of a bitch after killing him in misunderstandings. I hope he'd be fucking grateful.

Just hope the transfer doesn't have complications like I assume it will.
>>
>>37756528
He can suck it up. Teach him not to shoot people for speaking a different language.
>>
>>37756458
23! We science magic now.

It is complicated magic. Binding a newly dead soul, confused and malleable is one thing. Moving a dead and bound one around is much harder. More than that, simply binding the soul to the homunculus would be easy. You have to make sure that the soul is actually in control of the body.

Nonetheless, souls are your speciality. You drag the elf out of the skull with very little tearing and transfer him to the dog. He shivers. The legs move one by one. His eyes open. He barks and then he stands up.

>'Can you speak?'
>'Sit!'

'Do you feel any pain or discomfort? Can you even speak.'

The sound that comes out of his throat is not exactly speech, but it is comprehensible.

'Throat bad for speech. No pain. Better than skull.'

'Feel free to do what you want for now. If you hang around I might eventually get a better body for you.'

'Thanks. Will stay in woods nearby.'

That went just about as well as you could have expected. You have a very workable theory in how to create a human body and bind someone to it. You just need the raw materials now. You will get to it in time.

You have your obligations to the elves, especially now that so many of them have died in your service. Besides, after some initial thorniness Lathrien has been nothing but civil. He has been trying to call the rain every morning, but you decide that you should get a little bit more hands on.

'How are you doing?'
'It's... Frustrating. It's just within my grasp, but I can't quite get it.'
'Shamanism is all about patience. You are actually advancing quite fast. It took me years to get there.'
'Yeah, but I was supposed to know basic magic already.'
'Shamanism is very different from illusion, which is very different from necromancy. Try to see the spirits more like people. They are not incomprehensible. They may respond to that better than commands.'

Critical Success!

Your hands on approach works. Very well. Once Lathrien realizes the nature of the spirits around he learns to speak to them. First it takes almost a full day of meditation, but by the end of the month he can call the storm as quickly as you can. You are certain the spirits of earth would answer if he called as well. He is a better Shaman than most tribes ever get to have. Not as good as you, but gaining.

He also seems to have an affinity with the spirits of plants you never seemed to have, and now even with the necromantic energies permeating the ruin, he manages to establish a small garden for herbs and vegetables.

Finally, you have been spending much time with him and any resentment he might have had with you has faded. Your relationship has improved.

They are very well structured books with a lot of information on basketweaving. By the end of the month you can make some pretty decent baskets. If you kept working at it, you could even make them underwater.

You have gained Basketweaving 1! World shall tremble! Think of the implications!

If that wasn't enough, something is bothering you a little about the notes, seemingly written in margins by their previous owner.

Yes, of course. You knew there must be hidden rooms and tunnels in this place, but this is how they are opened. You have noticed strange indentations in the walls. You might have considered that they are slots for doorhandles, except no door handle you have encountered in the ruin would fit those indentations. Here are the instructions for woven handles for the secret passages of the ruin.

Success!

The rigidity is a problem. The walls of your ruin have always been stone and the woven handles have to be strong enough to be able to twist the mechanisms in the walls. The trick ends up being slightly alchemical and slightly magical. You have to create a strange, alchemical glue that makes the woven handles rigid as stone.

You approach one of these indentations, a large part of the floor way at the back, and insert the newly made handles. It fits like a glove. There is a dark passageway underneath.

You make a dozen of the fattest orc zombies go in before you, and you light the staff with the bound gnoll pyromancer it, providing you ample illumination. You are quite surprised by the smell there. Anything organic should have rotten by now. But it smells like rot, and fresh rot too. You are used to the smell of death, however and so you keep going.

You bring Lathrien too, and set most of the skeletons behind you as rear guard. It is cramped, but you can walk with fair amount of safety.

There is some liquid, ankle deep under your feet, and solid stone walls with no inscription or ornament on it.

21 Great Success!

At first you worry about the fluid under your feet. You are fairly certain it is mostly water, however. You keep moving, and you feel metal under your feet, trinkets and coins and odds and ends. Under the light of your staff it is clearly gold. You know the ancient civilizations used them for trade, but you have little use for it, aside from using it for alchemy.

The smell does not let up. It takes some twenty minutes of walking for you to find a floating carcass of a large deer, being eaten by a hundred rats. Eesh. Death is nothing new to you, of course, but it is worrisome that the body is here. There must be some other exits. What's more something else is using it.

You focus harder on looking about. You might have missed it, with the wall of undead ahead of you you almost do. Something grey, and just barely humanoid skitters across the ceiling of the tunnel. He is followed by another. You look behind you and more of the strange ghoulish creatures are there. It reminds you of the alchemical experiments a little.

Fight time.

Thirteen arrows leave bows and one hits one of the creatures. Five zombies dogpile on another. You are thinning their numbers quickly. You dodge and stab and kill one yourself.

You indulge in a feeling of smug satisfaction, but then you look up. Two of them are dropping on you from above.

You leave the bodies of the creatures behind you. There must be something more here. You have been walking for nearly an hour by the time you reach the central hall. Where the small, ghoulish creatures were disturbing, what you see in the central hall of the complex is downright horrific.

It is clearly a chimera, something you read in the alchemy books. You take one animal, add bits of other animal, make it alive. Except in this case, the alchemist had not stopped. There are fifteen, sixteen different animals spliced together there. And that is just the ones you recognize. The room is large, but the creation fills most of it.

It moves and your mind can barely comprehend how quickly it moves, in relation to its size.

18 (DC20) Failure!

You command your undead to overwhelm it, and channeling your most powerful magic through your sword you charge it. You knew it was fast, but you couldn't know how durable it would be. Only damage done by your minions comes from obsidian spears, which rapidly deteriorate. You decide you are going to have to do it on your own, but you overreach. A mouth of a creature strange to you lashes out on the end of one of the creature's many hands and bites you. It starts sucking your blood. You slice off the appendage, but it's done some damage.

KILL IT WITH FIRE
23! Great Success!

You command the gnoll's spirit to unleash all of its fire in one great inferno. You hear the cackles of the bound spirit and have but a second to consider whether or not this was a good idea.

The world is on fire. You are suddenly very happy you managed to take on the old gnoll by surprise. The entire room is filled with bright, yellow fire. The few zombies and skeletons you had not called back to retreat are incinerated.

The chimera lets loose a terrible scream, as if a thousand inhuman throats trying to replicate a human agony. Its skin has burned fully off, its tendons and muscles, organic in parts, metal wires in others are fully revealed. The fire dies down, although anything flammable in the room had been caught on fire. Air gets sucked in from somewhere, luckily, but it is hard to breathe for a long while.

>You have lost five undead

21! Blackjack!

You will stab the thing in every orifice it owns. Every. Orifice. You shout out a battlecry with no words and charge. It is still strong. But it is in a lot of pain, or at least acting as if it were. You cut tendons, slice muscle, stab in anything that looks like an organ. Some of those organs have a nasty surprise of acid in them. They do not harm your sword, but some of it hits your hands and gives you some serious wounds.

By the time it gets dark, the beast is extra dead. You have done your best to chop it up in little pieces. Then it goes dark.

>Leave. Return with light and more fire
>Achieve light somehow
>Try to find something in the darkness

>You have taken two wounds. The pain is slightly distracting.

Make some light and tend our wounds. Also check on Lathrien.

'Lathrien. You studied illusion, correct?'
'Yes, Vlad Tepish.'
'I understand that there is a light spell very early in that school.'
'Yes, I never mastered it though.'
'Tell me, how did your master describe the spell to you?'
'Well he said it is not about true light. You just have to trick the eyes of people that they see the light.'

That makes sense, sort of. You focus your magic. It is dim, and like no light you know. If you knew what a blacklight was, that is what it would remind you of. But you can see to a passable degree, so long as you focus.

The room, mostly taken up by the chimera seems to have been the alchemy lab of the man you took the ruin over from. While all of the research notes and such would have burned in the inferno, there is a good number of tools here, and even some of the reagents you would need to create a human body.

There is also a lot of gold. You might as well bring some of it with you. Then there are the remains of the creature.

>Leave it here, come back later with more fire.
>Gruesome it might be, but it is some advanced alchemy, take samples with you.

>Loot everything your undead can carry.
>Take the tools and the surviving ingredients. Leave the gold.
>This place is a fucking nightmare factory. Come back and burn it all down properly later.

'I call this a success. Lathrien, take whatever you think looks valuable, let's loot this place and get out.'

'Yes, Vlad Tepish.'

You take some samples of the acid, the tissue and the metal tendons of the creature. You also take the finer tools with you, especially the heavy leather gloves that seem to have survived the ravages of time. You do not contemplate what kind of skin it might be, but you dearly hope it is too rugged to be human.

The walk back is mostly uneventful, and in daylight the recovered gold looks rather impressive indeed. And there is a lot of it too. If you understand the old books right, the old necromancer must have been very wealthy indeed to acquire so much gold.

>Get to researching the chimera.

unattended guests make for deadly traitors. it would be a shame if they just decided we were more useful to them dead than alive, and slit our throat while we sleep.

You find the old women arguing comfortably in one of the larger bedrooms.

'Ragda, Gerda, I hope you have been settling in well.'
'Pah, this magic here buzzes in the back of your skull soon as you let it. It's fine enough, I suppose and Ragda refuses to leave, so there we are.' Gerda says.
'Oh don't listen to her. It is perfectly fine. The magic does not bother ME anymore at least.' Ragda says.

'So, about the tribe. I guess, if you were with the orcs that means...'
'It bloody means that new 'elder' left us in the forest to die.' Gerda says.
'Hardly an elder, no older than Vladdie.' Ragda says.
'Don't interrupt. The 'younger' decided that he was going to lead the tribe now. Said he'd bash in any head that refused. When Ragda spat on his feet he said he didn't need no crones in his tribe. Last I heard he was planning to 'unite the tribes'. That is some moose-shit, if I ever heard it.' Gerda says.
'So I guess you could say you guessed right- they're probably all dead by now.'

And with that I shall conclude this installment of Feral Necromancer Quest. It is a bit of an early finish for me, but it's a breaking point and we're past bump limit.

You got shit done! Definitely a 3 exp session. You have 4 exp! Levelling rules: http://pastebin.com/vBRyBWfK

Twitter @DeadQM for next session announcement. Might do a game tomorrow, if not then Thursday. Likely at around 10PM GMT either way.

You've got a lot of options for leveling, so I'll just step out for a while.
>>
>>37760335

good thread, OP. bracing for plot. voting for necromancy 5.
>>
>>37760335
Get that shaman magic 3 son. Easier soul stuff.
>>
>>37760335
Gr, awkward leveling numbers, can really only spend 3 this session (unless you want to get 2 stats up to 2).

It's almost like I'm not a game designer or something.

Decent options imo:

>2 stats raised from 1 to 2
>Necromancy 5 Bank 1
>Shamanism 3 Bank 1
>>
>>37760335
Boost alchemy
>>
>>37760400
Probably including giving bound spirits more senses.

I'm going to say Necromancy V

>>

voting for necro 5

>>37760404
design seems fine to me
>>
>>37760394
I am thinking the same, we should dump points into necromancy.
>>37760400
Is soul stuff with shaman? That doesn't make as much sense as it would with necromancy.
>Necromancy 5 Bank 1
one point into intelligence.
We've shit intelligence for a necromancer.
>>
>>37760404
>>2 stats raised from 1 to 2
Stamina and perception
>>
>>37760449
Last upgrade with shaman gave us the ability to give bound spirits a sense.
>>
>>37760442
>>37760433
>>37760404
But no, seriously, backing Shamanism.
>>37760449
I think so? Iirc, we only earned the ability to give them senses with Shamanism II. Also, shit intelligence compared to whom? We have nothing to make a comparison to; your argument is completely unfounded, not to mention that leveling a stat doesn't work like that.
>>
>>37760404
>Shamanism 3 Bank 1
>>
>>37760499
>>37760505
>>37760449
Also pretty shaman made our undead smarter at one point. possibly first time we fought the elves.
>>
>>37760505
Improved spirit binding is actually technically one of the 'combo' spells, except it is not nearly as impressive as the ones I've written down as such.

Effectively, binding souls will benefit from shamanism more, until shamanism overtakes necromancy.
>>
>>37760335
So some idoits trying to rally into a warlord. interesting. Put him on the too deal with list if he actually does something with it.
>>
>>37760404

necro 5 go

...unless that strengthens the hold of not!Death over us

...nah, I'm sure it's fine
>>
>>37760595
we'll have to deal with him eventually, I'd rather rank up a bit more now so we learn more and can prepare
>>
>>37760499
>>37760505
thats damn important.
But I think i'll stick with necromancy.
I feel like we might be in for a big fight sooner rather than later.
And our undead already retain some knowledge.
At 5 they might keep most of it and it would be nice to have more undead at the ready. For bigger fights.
And i the humans haven't killed them selves they might make a move towards the gnolls/elves. And at this point it's in our best interest to keep em alive.

Looks like a slight edge for Necromancy V

You have reached Necromancy V! Your max controlled undead is now 50.

You have learned the following spells:

Plague: Upgrade to Inflict Disease. The disease you can inflict through your magic can now be virulent and extremely easily transmittable. If you are careful, you could wipe out entire tribes without anyone noticing. Powerful magic users will recognize that the plague is magical. Characters with very high stamina may survive, but would be weakened.

Curse: You can make a magical attack against a target, and if successful, reduce one of their stats to -1. You cannot curse the same character more than once.
>>
>>37760905
Curse sounds potentially very awesome. What effect does having a stat at negative 1 produce? Is the curse permanent, and can we remove it?
>>
>>37761026
Instead of a bonus, the cursed person/creature might get a negative.
Which is great say we have to fight another dragon or something.may even the playing field a little.
>>
>>37761216
Wow thanks DeadQM, it sure was great getting an answer directly from the guy who made the setting so I can be sure it's correct!
