Quest Twitter: Horseman @Dread_Horseman

You are Sir Aldrich Brickvelt, Knight errant and humble crusader, and you have been transported, by what you do not know, to the far future and a place called 'New York'.

You have found companionship and aid in a maiden, scholar Lisa DeRetti, and a captured saracen warrior, Badi al Zaram, who has provided you clues as to how you came to this strange land.

Now after a fateful and disapointingly brief encounter with Lisa's violent ruffian of a brother, Policeman Leonardo DeRetti, you find your self in very strange company indeed...

You cannot feel anything save for a searing pain in your face. You cannot see anything save for a blinding blackness. You cannot taste or smell at all, but you can hear something...music? Voices?

Both. A music thay you can understand...fait, muffled, jumbled, but it's there...

You try to focus, try to understand your surroundings...

The sounds become clearer..."-too good does it?"

"No, it doesnt...Gods, we really fucked up this time...their shift is almost up, we need to sort this out before anyone gets back..."

"Why?! Do realize how much trouble we could get in?"

"If we don't normalize his situation ours could deteriorate rapidly. This asshole is part of the mission that General Lucifer labeled as high priority."

"Oh hells...it's true then..the mortal that started this whole mess, he sto-"

"Yes, and this one is the only one who can stop him. We've ran the numbers."

"But we can't alter the Weave! They'll crack down on us!"

"Then leave Orius. I will do it in my own."

"Destiel, you can't!"

"I have no choice"

You become more lucid and you regain your vision and you see...a man...?

The world flashes crimson.

"I would wake him but I fear he is well armed and dangerous...there is a danger to him that I do not care for..."

She gasps, "Oh my god! He is! You could have been shot!" She says, as she unlips his belt.

You smirk, "With what?"

She points to a black wedge on his belt, "A gun."

You eye the thing cautiously. Such a small ugly thing...why does she treat like a deadly snake?

"Badi," you command, "Could you retrieve your bonds? We are going to secure this one in the same fashion."

He nods and dashes into the bathroom.

He comes back shortly and hands you the ropes and twine. You and he tie the cop's hands together, then his feet. Then gag him for good measure.

"So what do alternative lifestyles entail?" ask Lisa.

"Nothing you would like to worry about trust me."

"Yeah...he fought in Iraq and Afghanistan."

"I thought you said the crusades where over? My people given up, tired of the whole affair."

"It's complicated...but in my opinion? They've never been over. There's a book the history of North Africa and the middle east, you should read it when we're not tying people up and waterboarding them..."

"Is the American Army powerful? They must have access to great resources to wage war in the far east, across the ocean."

"It's the best army in the world, actually."

Still pissed off at you for railroading us last time
>>
>>37761691
Literally 90% of quests that don't involve railroading are either generic civ quests, new Quest makers who don't know better (example, my two quest threads), and blorps ogre civilization quest which is a giant fuck you to normal quest threads and literally involves suplexing a train and an extremely loaded dice system.

Trust me, railroading is almost always the way to go, Horseman is just inexperienced at proper railroading.
>>
>>37761691
I'm so Sorry, I really am. I want you to know that. I was going to have him shot at some point but my execution was lazy and rushed. I should have just done it the next quest, as opposed to rushing it. I realize I've lost a big part of my audience because of that, and if they are still there I want them to know that I've fucked up. I'll try so it doesn't happen again. As a fledgling QM and hopeful DM. feedback is very important to me. So please, if I'm being a faggot, let me know.

>I was going to have him shot at some point
But why? What point was there to that? Seems pretty retarded to just go "cop wakes up and shoots you, you're dead".
>>
>>37761967
Wasn't even here for this railroading but I know there tends to be two types.

Shit tier railroading from a DM who's pissing his players are going out of story bounds starts being a massive dick about things.

Okay(There is no great tier) railroading where you kind of nudge the plot in a direction it needs to go or cause events the players were ignoring to explode into clusterfucks/major events that might get their attention.

Its kind of a fine line. and its hard to ever get a proper grip on it.
>>
>>37762144
Well it made no sense at all, the quest was going fine just doing slice of life stuff with the MC discovering all about the modern world and seeing what changed, then all of a sudden Lisa's brother kills him, dafuq?
>>
>>37762209
He probably didn't die, but who the hell knows.
>>
>>37762241
Her brother woke up, and immediately reached for something on his belt, next thing we know everything went black, 3 guesses as to what he reached for, all 3 answers are his gun.
>>
>>37762058
It was retarded. I know that. But it was going to much more natural on how it played out. Instead it came out random as fuck.

>>37762040
It was neither. It was like I took a bunch of updates and condensed it into one "action" sequence.
>>
>>37762209
Okay thats shit tier. and makes no fucking sense beyond "I'm bored with this lets kill it quickly."

I mean wat. da fuck. are you doing.

That is why you fail.

I don't suppose you're familiar with or have read up on the healing process for gunshot wounds? I can understand you thinking 'hey, wouldn't it be neat (and maybe make sense) for our unfamiliar-with-modern-world-knight to get shot at some point?', but it was a little out of nowhere and realistically would put Aldrich out of action for a while.

>Just thay I was going to work for the rest of the day and I knew I wouldn't be able to finish the thread an I didn't want it to go unresolved.
Heres a tip, don't rush events or threads, run when you can and want to, and progress as things feel natural, but don't push or force events, you'll have all the time in the world later on after work or whenever to resume things.
>>
>>37762426
A grazer would still feel like hell for weeks (from what I understand) but yes.

>>37762467
Ah. I'm sure that in hindsight you can see how that clashed with the current pacing or tone a bit? Or at least see where we're coming from in that regard?
>>
>>37762522
>A grazer would still feel like hell for weeks (from what I understand) but yes.
When I got hit in the upper arm in sandbox I could use my arm again within 3 days, the round was a fmj that just went through the muscle and left a small hole, it took about 2 weeks to fully seal the wound and about another month of rehab to build the muscle back up but modern medicine is surprisingly good as long as you don't hit bone or ligaments or organs.
>>
>>37762594
Good to know, that makes a lot of sense. I've read of people getting permanent sub-dermal scarring from a non-penetrating shot, and in the case of a hit muscle, it generally being unpleasant for a while.

"In case she had something to do with it and someone who would be less lenient got on the case. And you didn't answer my question."

"Which one?"

"Do you know anything about the break in?"

"What? Break in?! I thought you said it was only minor damages! Good God, who would do such a thing? Please tell me nothing was too badly damaged, there are many priceless relics there, it would be a tragedy if a piece of history was to be robbed from future generations!"

They fired the security officer on the night shift at the time. This was his strike three. He's our biggest lead. Besides Lisa. I'm kinda hoping she's not involved but something in my gut...I don't know..."

Lisa walks out after a few moments, having changed into less casual attire. She tosses some sort of cloak to you and Badi, "Hoodies, because you post your luggage."

You nod slowly, going along with the lie. "Of course, thank you." You slip it in, like a shirt with a hood, quite an ingenious invention. It also has the same row of interlocking teeth, like your pants. You pull the little tap thay seals the divide And the 'hoodie' sews itself together. Badi simply looks at his and seemingly makes a decided un-attempt.

Lisa ushers you out the door, "Help him up." You do as commanded, putting his arm over yours and gingerly helping him up.
"Thanks pal, I can make it myself now, thank you."

"As you wish."

"I never got your name, buddy."

"Sir Aldrich Brickvelt of Midsommer." You declare, as if conversing with a fellow crusader.

This doesn't seem to faze him however he simply says, "Oh, a knight, right on. Well good to meet you sir."

You laugh as you walk into the hallway, "You can dispense with the pleasantries, I don't mind truly." [CONT]

You stay silent. You know less than nothing about this world, but you mustn't rouse the suspicion of your new cop freind. But as you walk you can't help but take in the city in its fullness, with its shimmering towers of metal stone and glass, with the Strange guady carriages that zip and zoom about. Such impossible grandeur...you try to find a marvel of your age thay can Mach this seemingly common majesty but you cannot...

"Yo, Aldrich, you doin' alright," Leonardo asks, interrupting your reverie, "what they don't got skyscrapers in London?"

"Oh goodnes. No, not quite like this...And are you alright, to walk I mean?"

"Oh yeah I should be fine, it's only like a block or two to her car."

You try to just walk forwards but New York's alien allure gets the best of you. You can't help but stare at the Strang fashions and people, how open and brash everyone is. You're surprised that this hadn't gotten to you earlier. 'By God,' you think to yourself, 'What a beauti-' your contemplation is cut off as you collide with a vagrant, "HEY! Watch it!" Bad things happen to QMs. I ran a quest for a month and the water pipes in my house broke and my car battery died, both while i was running. Some notable examples are that one guy who ran Fate/Stay night quest whose stuff kept catching fire and that one QM who may be dead.

"I haven't the barest idea." You claim. You never realized what a deft liar you are.

"Crazy bums, you're gonna find that New York is fulla wackos."

Ha! Bums..."Indeed." You agree jovially.

"We're here," Lisa cuts in, pointing to a black thing on a long of such vehicles. She sees what must translate to apprehension on your face. "Oh of course, apologies my lord," She says jokingly, opening the door for you. She's quite the liar herself...

"Oh please, the wounded first," you insist.

"Don't mind if I do," Leonardo obliges, carefully entering the thing. A black box near his collar suddenly speaks! A calm but crackley and tinny voice ushers forth from the thing, "10-32 in progress at 81st street subway. Suspect is 4"9, approximately 120, arabic. Requesting all available back up." the woman in the box says.

Leonardo turns a ghastly shade of white. "Lee, what is it?" Lisa asks.

"Lisa...it's god damned terrorist attack. They're gonna bomb the Natural History...I need to get over there! Now!"

"Lee no! You can't!" Lisa says, raw terror creeping into her voice.

"Liz...I have to. I can't let it be another 9/11."

"Lee, you're hurt...you can't..." Lisa says, tears beginning to well up in her eyes.

You don't understand what's going on for the most part, nor the context, or whatever Nine Eleven is.

But this is a scene you've seen a hundred times. A warrior off to the battlefield, his loved ones clutching at him. Should the warrior live or die his seeing off is all the same.

"Lee..." Lisa breathes, tears flowing now.

Blue is associated with trust and peace. Red is associated with courage, zeal and valour. As a knight, Sir Aldrich should uphold all of these virtues, as well as those projected by the colour white, which invokes feelings of purity, innocence, wholeness and completion.
>>
>>37787661
Sounds like a plan. Let's make it so.

>>37787058
"He has a duty to uphold, as a defender of law and native of this land. He must falter in its defense, wounded or no. I understand things might be different but deny him this would be a great dishonour."

"Butt out, Aldrich!" Lisa says, hand on her forehead and pacing.

"Lisa you must listen. Times may have changed but you know I'm right. He must go."

"Liz I'll be fine. I'll hitch a ride with you, you drop me off, I get the scumbag to back off and we all go to the hospital, then maybe to Veselka's for dinner, 'eh?"

She thinks for a moment wiping her eyes. "Fine, fine. Everybody get in the fucking car."

You slide into the back of the 'car'. Bum...cop...car...very fond of their short words the future folk are...Badi sits in the back, his eyes widening In fear, "Don't worry Badi," you say to him in Arabic, "nothing bad will happen!"

A note, if you plan on having Aldritch properly introduced to firearms. Greek Fire, or various knock off recipes of the same, were still being used in the period he comes from. And I'm not sure, but there may have been primitive gunpowder that had at least been heard of. While he wouldn't know the particulars of the alchemy, he'd be able to grasp the mechanics of a gun easily, even without his way above average intelligence.

Your turn the the arab and speak to him in his native tongue, "Badi, how in Christ's name are you staying so calm!"

Badi shrugs, "I figure there's three ways to be in a place like this. Being very wise, like you, so it makes sense, or being too dense for it faze you. Or," He says raising his finger to punctuate the point, a very arabic gesture, "you simply don't care, like me."

You belt out a nervous laugh, "Fair enough!"

"We're here," Lisa says in laboured, husky tones.

There are a few white cars with red and blue accents. The transports of the law no doubt. "Alright, everyone stay in the car and get out of here, they probably won't want you stick around." Leonardo says.

Lisa just nods, then says, "Don't let what happened to Luke happen again."

He grimaces, "Never. I love you Liz."

"I love you too, dumbass."

He smiles, "Whatever you say bitch."

You look at this display of affection with curiosity. Strange and crass...but sincere...

But there's something else...not with them no...a niggling feeling in your head...he shouldn't go alone....no, its not so much that you feel he needs further aid...no, YOU must go in there...

The alchemy of his time (if it was practiced then) was pretty different than the alchemy that became chemestry. Probably! But I believe there was some experimentation with bombs first. Not used in combat, mind you, but more in the style of a placed charge. Just really, really, shitty by modern standards. I could absolutely, be wrong, though, I'm not well read on the middle ages beyond the start.

"And what if it doesn't?" You ask tentatively.

He squints, a warrior's look, "I don't know. It should be safe..."

We need to get a collapsible baton, we're used to using blunt objects to beat people, one of those things would be fucking amazing for us.

So we did, confound it all! Well, batons are nice, but quite flimsy compared to a steel mace. Still, it'll do if nothing else

If you're thinking of one of those retractable batons, not really, since its like an overgrown radio antenna. But a night stick is a different story. We should ask Lee for his, if he's got it.

>Is that some manner of club you have at your belt? Would you be able to spare it?
>>
>>37800720
I am thinking of those retractable batons, and good ones are seriously fucking tough, go watch some videos on good ones being torture tested, they are nothing like a radio antenna.
>>
>>37800720
I can assure you that collapsable batons are not to be trifled with. Is Aldrich's Flanged Mace better? Well yeah. But he can't take thay everywhere.

Weeeell, if you say so. Might not do as much flesh damage as a big spiky mace, but it will wreck a body's shit. It occurs to me that a spiked medieval mace is best used against armor and shields, which wouldn't be much of an issue today, whereas a baton is quicker and lighter anyway

"Aye, I was. Still am, in a way."

He raises an inquisitive eyebrow.

"Well I now do battle with ink and quill, tome and scroll."

"Oh yeah what about mace and shield?"

"Oh! Right...well. To be frank it's all rather...complicated you see master Leonardo. All very complicated...Suffice it to say I am and was a warrior. Of the body and mind."

"Alright, I get it. You don't have to tell me. I'm guessing SAS. Some secret squirrel shit, am I right? It's all right, you don't have to tell me. I was a ranger myself. Tore shit up in the sandbox."

You reach the doors of wood and glass, "After you M'lord." the warrior lawkeeper jests.

You shake your head, "No, no, after you sire." Opening the door with a mock bow and smile.

"Why thank you your worshipfulness!"

The two off you enter the building jovially Chuckling.

Then you see them. GIANT monolithic skeletons of Staggering proportions, one a beast of titanic height, with a tail like and a devil's whip and a neck taller than any tree, like a snake with a body of am elephant. The other, an insidious thing shorter in stature but far deadlier in form, with daggers for teeth and talons like a hell hound, positioned and set as if dueling.

You would gasp in shock, or at least ask him what these behemoth remains are from but you are presenting yourself as a scholar, surely you would be knowledgable about these beasts. Instead you simply add, "How still it is, too quiet for such a grand hall."

"Yeah. A little too quiet. It's like every bad horror movie, ha! I'm sure they're down in the subway. If shits going down you gotta go though. It's dumb as shit bringing you down here anyway."

You nod, absently studying the statuesque corpses.

Fortunately your companion answers a few of your unspoken questions, "Ya know, if there's one thing I loved about museums was the dinosaurs. Sure the ancient history stuff like what you and Liz study is neat and all, but it's just so...I don't. Familiar? I mean it's not obviously but it's still human stuff. I KNOW about humans, I deal with them everyday. They suck. But animals...especially shit like this, really just blows my mind."

Dinosaurs...Greek? Lizards thay Inspire awe, if you're greek isn't as poor as you think it is. Better than his most likely.

The 'sub way' was not far. After passing by halls with amazingly lifelike statues, and marble walls lines with strange tapestries you reach another, much much smaller chamber. He points to a wide passage, "There she is."

You and he approach the sub way, you're not sure if he can hear it but you hear...groaning? No...too rythmic...chanting? It is familiar to you...as if from a dream...

"You alright' Al?"

It's slightly bad form, Horseman, to refer to the MC as 'us'. Ideally you should be emotionally detached (or at least pretend to) and refer to the MC as 'you guys' or 'you'. Not a big deal, but it's noticeable.

All we have to do is punch out one or two cultists (assuming there are any), and Leonardo might feel threatened enough by that point to open fire and disrupt them. Assuming they don't just overwhelm us.

"No. Something evil pollutes the air, can't you feel it? And hark! That whisper on the air? It is strange, no?" You proclaim in hushed tones, "Or do your comrades always giber and moan eldritch things in low places?"

"Fuck...alright. Go back to the car, get them out of here, I'll radio for back up."

"No, I might have insight into this, if my fears are well founded."

"You know something about this?!" He hisses, as the groaning chant grows louder.

"I might, I'm unsure. Perhaps we should investigate?"

He nods, and you both creep to the entrance and stair well to the sub way. As you get closer the lights grow dimmer, flickering and flashing, erratic and buzzing. The sub way below is pitch black, save for a sickly green glow.

You see Leonardo begin to sweat, you yourself begin to feel the upmost trepidation.

You continue to sneak down the stairs, until you see the grisly scene below.

There are two bodies thay have been completely rent asunder, their viscera spread haphazardly on the platform. There are few others contorted in cruel positions, like twisted washcloths twisted and drained of water. There are several other lain on the floor, dead or alive you cannot be sure. Those in the worst conditions are mostly cops, officers of the law that no doubt fought the vile congregation before you.

The beings. One, a man in the robes of a Muslim priest, kneeling, hands raised in silent exaltation before a ring of emerald fire.

Flanking him are creatures in the shapes of men, tall and lanky, composed of coalesced flame that did not burn nor produce much light, save for a dim but angry orange glow. You know enough about saracen myth to know them.

Djinn.

In the corner of your eye you see Leonardo, so familiar with foes of tangible substance and mundane nature, freeze, all the deadly bravado of trained warrior dispelled.

If you yourself had not been halfway expecting such unholy scene you might have been as thunderstruck. But the agents of Zaheeri, if that is not the devil himself before you, will not claim victory again. No longer will they manipulate with their sorceries and perform blasphemies against God.

Not while you still draw breath.
