Schechina tried to pull a fast one on you by starting the match before you learned the rules. Most gym battles have nearly identical rules, so you bet a lot of seasoned trainers don’t listen or don’t bother asking here.

You make a mental note to be careful. It seems like trickery is her speciality.

Yours is usually stalling or status effects. If it was just brute force, you might be in trouble, but if you keep your head in the game you’ll come out of this on top. After all, you’re going to fight an Elite Four member later. You won’t stand a chance if another regular gym gives you trouble, right? Losing isn’t an option.

“Destiny! I choose you!”

You toss out Destiny, your Horsea, in a brilliant flash of light that illuminates the dark battlefield. She’s agile and fast with a decent punch behind her beams. She also knew Outrage when you caught her. She hasn’t had a good chance to prove herself in a long time.

And now you’re both facing a Golurk in the dark. Schechina must have some trick to negate it.

At any time, you or your opponent can throw in another Pokemon and turn this into a double battle without announcing your intentions. This will be tricky.

“Destiny! Use Rain Dance and Smokescreen, let’s go!”

Destiny leaps through the air, letting out a thick cloud of smoke at the enemy Golurk as she wiggles and dances. After only a few seconds, it begins to rain over the battlefield.

While your visibility is down, you can at least see the outline of various obstacles, rocks and pillars strewn over the field thanks to the rain. There’s a lot of cover and places to hide if you’re so inclined.

“Very clever, Kat! But you’ve just given me more to worth with! Golurk! Use Mud-Slap!”

A shot of mud comes flowing out of the center of the Smokecreen. It’s an expert shot, narrowly going between two pillars. Destiny changes position and dodges just in the nick of time.

Looks like your agility training has come in handy. Destiny had very little warning and still managed to avoid a fairly wide attack. “Nice dodge girl! Keep it up!”

The elderly gym leader yells out before you can act. “Golurk! You know what to do! Remember the layout!” You hear it stomp around, but can't see what's going on.

What sort of trick is she pulling?

“Destiny! Scald! Extra hot!” You have no idea if that helps, but you want to make sure she gives it all of her effort.

Destiny fires at an obscured, large silhouette. It’s dead center where Golurk’s bandage should be.

The hot water and steam momentarily blows a clear path through the smoke. She hit a pillar shaped almost exactly like Golurk!

Schechina laughs. “Looks like you haven’t done your research! This place remembers us and we remember it. These stones and pillars take the shape of a Pokemon that stands near them for a short period of time, and we know where each one is down to the millimeter!”

This gym has a lot of surprises! Schechina must have been a bored leader for a long time to do all this.

The only comfort is that there’s surely no way she can throw a second Pokemon without the bright light giving it away. This place lacks lights or windows, but there’s no supernatural darkness or anything as far as you can tell.

>Spam beam attacks all over, one of them has to hit

You can pull tricks too! There’s no way you’re going to be outwitted by this old lady, even if she is experienced!

You yell your instructions to Destiny, trying to make sure your voice doesn’t carry too far. You have her wait at a stone roughly her size, and surround it with ice.

“Some of us don’t have forever to wait around you know!” Schechina yells. “End this farce, Golurk! Dynamic Punch!”

A rapid stomping noise approaches Destiny’s position. The stone slides slightly on the ice from the impacts. It's shaped like Destiny now too

Golurk appears with a mighty fist ready to strike, but he slips. Destiny manages to get the last bit of her Ice Beam to connect to his legs and he comes crashing down hard.

“Yes! Great job Destiny!”

You glance over at the referee. He’s wearing some sort of glowing goggles. He's watching your fight intently. Why does it feel like you're forgetting something?

That's right! Her Gengar doesn't stay in it's Pokeball. For all you know it's on the field right now!

But what if it's not? You're in a good position and adding more Pokemon to the mix might break the flow.

“Scald! Give it all you’ve got!”

Destiny begins spraying Golurk hard. She leaps onto it’s back and really gets in there, unleashing a powerful hot spray. Golurk struggles to get up and slips again under the power attacks. He’s not able to reach behind his back where Destiny is. She just keeps pouring blast after blast into him. He’s clearly burnt and won’t last.

Just before she’s able to take him out entirely, Schechina yells. “We’re not done yet! Golurk! Phantom Force!”

The weakened Golurk vanishes from under Destiny. She drops the short distance onto the ground, looking left and right. Her stone double continues to slide on the ice, further away.

>Have her juke to her stone double! He’ll be confused when he re-appears!

“Destiny! Roll to the left! Hurry!”

She leaps over next to her statue. It’s only a vague outline that looks like her, not something as convincing as a Substitute. Still, in this smoky darkness it’s hard to tell.

The Golurk appears again, and completely obliterates the stone double! Stone chips and rubble fly through the rain. The burn has taken it’s toll on him and it’s clear he won’t last much longer.

Perfect, now to finish it! You just have to-

“I guess you’re not leaving me a choice. Strike now,” Schechina yells! Something about how she yelled it seems off. There might be a trick.

“Destiny! Finish it off with Outrage!”

Destiny fires off at Golurk in a purple aura with unreasonable speed. A Shadow Ball flies through the smoke where she was and explodes harmlessly.

The small Horsea bounces off the KO’d Golurk and right back at where the Shadow Ball came from. There’s a loud impact that sends a shockwave of water and smoke outward in a pretty pattern. You see Gengar come flying out of the smoke and skid across the ground and into a rock, sending the last of the rain spraying out of it’s path.

“Incredible!” Even though you can’t see Schechina, you can sense the shock in her gravelly voice.

The referee, professional as possible, raises a glow-in-the-dark flag. “Golurk is unable to battle.”

Destiny lands. You can see her wobble a bit. She must be confused.

The rain clears up and Gengar comes to it's feet. Schechina retrieves her Golurk.

“Hypnosis!” Schechina yells as you yell your own commands.

“Smokescreen and Rain Dance! You can do it!”

Destiny shakes her head and begins blowing smoke out. Gengar’s eyes become obscured just in time as they begin to glow.

You hear Schechina spit out what sounds like a curse in a foreign language.

She does her best to get out another quick Rain Dance as a Shadow Ball strikes at her from the darkness. It’s much faster than Golurks attacks and she takes the full hit. At the same time, you see the flash of a Pokeball from Schechina’s side. You see the Pokemon only for a brief second.

It begins to rain. Destiny’s eyes still twirl, but she’ll probably snap out of it any second now.

“Now! Gang up on it!”

She needs help! It's two on one!

“Devon! Back her up!” You quickly toss out Devon, your very first Pokemon.

Devon flies through the air, running to Destiny’s side. He doesn’t waste a second.

You’ll have to coordinate them both. You’d better think of your command for Devon first.

Devon sniffs the air. Smoke and darkness surround him and your opponents, making it hard to see.

You’ll have Devon use Dark Pulse on Gengar. It’s already taken an Outrage full on, so it can’t take much more punishment.

Destiny gets back up. She shakes off her confusion and glares with determination.

It’s still dark and smoky. There’s a possibility Devon might miss, or that they have other tricks they’ll try to pull.

“Destiny! Shoot down any attacks! Devon, Dark Pulse on Gengar!”

Devon fires a pulse into the darkness as Gengar’s obscured blobby mass. Only too late do you both realize it was the wrong target!

Gengar appears from behind.

“Explosion!”

Gengar grins as it charges and blows up almost instantly. A massive explosion shakes the whole battlefield as the smoke and rain flies out in a circle.

Devon and Destiny are sent flying in different directions! Destiny manages to flip herself around and avoid crashing into a pillar. Devon goes sliding across the ground. Both of your Pokemon have taken massive blow.

“Misdreavus, Echoed Voice!” A piercing wail echoes out from the darkness. Destiny has nothing to shoot at as the sound hits them both. “This attack becomes stronger every time we use it. Do you think you can find Misdreavus before it’s too late?”

Damn she’s tricky! She stole a nearly flawless victory. Still, you only have one Pokemon to deal with.

“Gengar is unable to battle,” The referee announces as you scramble to come up with a new plan. That song can take out your weakened Pokemon quickly if it's going to just keep getting stronger!

>Have Devon try to use Roar to fight the Echoed Voice while Destiny fires blasts

“Devon, Sunny Day! Don’t give it any shadows to hide in!”

Devon pulls it off without a hitch, lighting up the field. The referee rips the goggles off of his face quickly. You can even see bare outlines of your friends in the stands.

Misdreavus is caught out in the open on the other side of the field. She continues to sing, wearing down Devon and Destiny. They won’t last much longer under this growing attack.

Destiny can’t take advantage of her ability, Swift Swim, and water attacks won’t be as effective. Still, a swap could take time that Devon might not have. It’s a hard choice. You’re winning by a good amount, but the gap is shrinking fast with that move.

“Destiny! Outrage! Give it everything you’ve got!”

Destiny explodes in a sudden rush of power. She blasts through the air like a bullet right through a soundwave into Misdreavus. It’s happening almost faster than your eyes can track, but at the same time it feels like time slows down when it connects. There’s a massive shockwave and Misdreavus is sent flying back. She goes well over the arena floor and slams into the side of the building passed Schechina.

Misdreavus slides down the wall and onto the floor. There’s a silence.

“Misdreavus is unable to battle! Victory goes to the challenger!”

You can see your friends cheering from the stands. Schechina smiles as she retrieves her Pokemon and mutters something to it you can’t hear. She comes over to meet you as your friends come crowding down from the stands.

Devon walks over to you and Destiny manages to hop over as well.

“Great job Destiny!” She bubbles. “You too Devon,” you scratch his head.

Destiny begins to glow. She’s evolving!

Your friends finally make it over and watch as the pulsing light shines off her.

Destiny scrunches her eyes and struggles with something. The pulsing slows down.

“Wait, there’s something wrong. She doesn’t want to evolve,” Clair says. “She’s worried about her agility.”

“It’s okay girl, we can keep training it,” you kneel down and speak to her. She struggles against the evolution. “I promise if we train hard, we can keep your agility just as good as it is now. Maybe even better! Dan adjusted, I know you can too. You worked hard to come this far. You earned this.”

She looks scared as she glances up to you. She gives you a look like she’s asking if you’re absolutely sure. You smile and nod.

Destiny stops struggling. The pulsing grows and grows in intensity and speed. Before you know it, you have a Seadra.

You give her a long, almost crushing hug.

“Careful!” Robin pulls your hand back. “Don’t prick yourself!”

You’re confused until you see the sharp points on Destiny’s back. You can see a small oily substance on the tips if you squint. “Poison Point,” you say. Your time studying abilities has really come in handy. You remember that sometimes Pokemon change abilities when they evolve.

Destiny tries to glance behind herself at the new pointy bits, then looks down at her arms. She seems confused and unsure.

“Way to go!” Vance slaps you on the back, knocking the wind out of you.

“That was the most impressive trouncing I’ve had in a long, long time. You’ve earned this.” Schechina places a badge in your hand. “It’s the Remembrance badge. All things must come to an end, but they don’t have to be forgotten.”

“Even I have to admit I’m impressed,” Clair gives you a much softer pat.

Jeanine and Robin sandwich you in a hug.

“Now, like most gyms, we have a little tradition for winners. Did you want to do that now, or after my next challenger?” She glances over to Robin.

“We could come back and give you time to rest if you’d like.”

Schechina glares at you. “Don’t make me revoke that badge. You don’t have to pity an old lady. I’ve got plenty of other tricks up my sleeve. You don’t live as long as I do without having plenty of ways to wallop little upstarts.”

Clair looks up at her with renewed admiration. “She’s so cool,” she says under her breath.

You throw up your hands. “That’s fine. I can wait. Robin’s tough too.”
Robin smiles anxiously as the focus goes onto her.

“Alright then little one. Let’s see if Pokemon skill is genetic. It may be a long time ago, but I still remember battling your mothe-”

“G-great! Let’s do this!” Robin let’s out some force enthusiasm as she cuts Schechina off. The Ghost type gym leader just rolls her eyes and walks back to her spot.

You place a hand on Robin’s shoulder. “You’ve got this.”

She nods back. “I was thinking about using Sunny Day the whole time. Now I’ll feel like a copy- cat,” she laughs. You give her hand a squeeze and let her get ready.

You take to the stands to watch Robin’s challenge. Sunny Day has long worn off.

Vance sits to your left. “So, are you going to point out lessons again?”

“It’s important to get a variety of input,” you say as he listens intently. “Jeanine and Clair will see things from a different angle, you should see what they think about it.”

Vance nods and begins talking to both of them. You feel a little bad about blowing him off like that, but you actually do believe what you just said.

Robin opens with her Vulpix against Schechina’s...what is that? You take out your Pokedex.

“Aegislash. The Royal Pain Pokemon. Apparently, it can detect innate qualities of leadership. According to legend, whoever it recognizes is destined to become king. Females don’t count. Better luck next life.”

Instead of blowing it away with fire right away, she fights defensively and has it run around trying to change the shape of as many stones as possible and re-arrange the battlefield. Vulpix takes a lot of blows while doing this.

Clair dictates for Vance. “She figured out Schechina and her Pokemon have the layout memorized. She’s taking away that advantage.”

That’s her style, battlefield control! Robin has Vulpix use Pain Split and a fire attack. knocking Aegislash out. Then she throws out her Joltik. Joltik spins webs all over the area as Sunny day wears out.

Jeanine catches on. “Joltik can feel the vibrations of the webs and tell where the enemy Pokemon are.”

Vulpix and Joltik end up fighting Cofagrigas and a Sableye that was hiding on the field. Robin makes a sudden switch for Golem and gives Vulpix a rest. Joltik is free to fire electrical attacks through it’s webs as Golem follows up with powerful earth shaking moves and a surprise Sucker Punch. She sweeps the match without losing a Pokemon!

Robin’s gotten a lot stronger. You and your friends run down to congratulate her.

You give Robin a peck on the cheek and hug her. Your friends crowd in and each one gives a congratulations. Even with that eye patch, she looks like such a shy and innocent person. You sigh as you stare at her.

Schechina ushers you both off the field.“Come on! My programmes start soon and I don’t miss them for anybody.”

She takes you to a large, better lit room. There’s no floor here, only dirt and row upon row on small markers. She hands you each a small trowel.

“Is this a graveyard?”

“Not in the way you’re thinking. I had my gym built in this specific location because long ago, the old inhabitants of Sandorp would come here to say goodbye to something. Everyone who’s won can bury something here. It’s said to be magic and to give a great feeling of closure, if you believe in that sort of thing. There’s a pen and some paper if you want to write something down and bury that. You don’t have to mark your spot if you don’t want to”

You see some of the markers of writing. Things like “My old life,” or “My marriage,” or “My belly fat.”

“You kids take too long. Lock the door on the way out,” Schechina shouts. She looks back before leaving. “But I have to admit, you’re both very talented trainers. I expect to watch you at the league.” She leaves, leaving you and Robin alone in this room.

You sketch out a quick drawing of the orphanage. You can leave that behind. For some reason despite everything, you’ve still considered it home. It’s not a place you particularly liked, and you always ran away or snuck out, but it was still where you grew up.

But you have a new home now. Beside your friends and Pokemon. You’ll be together through thick and thin, like families are supposed to be.

Robin buries something and walks over to you.

“K-Kat, I have to tell you something,” She looks at the ground. “I-I haven’t been completely honest with you about something.” She fidgets. “Can you promise you won’t get mad?”

Here it comes. Robin’s secret. The one you almost learned from Clair.

You give it some serious thought. “I don’t think I can promise that. Nobody can. You told me not to lie to you, after all. You'll just have to take a leap and trust. I can promise not to freak out.”

“O-okay.” Robin nods and takes a deep breath. “When we first met, I told you that my mom died.”

You nod your head.

“Then when we went to my dad’s gym, I told him that he wasn’t the same since mom left. She didn’t die, I was just mad at her and when I found out you were an orphan I felt really bad about putting it that way.”
You give her a moment. You’re sure she’s leading somewhere with this.

“T-that’s not what I’m sorry about.” She pauses, then her eye goes wide. “W-wait I mean, I am sorry about that, but i-i-it’s not what I’m trying to say.” You put a hand on her shoulder. She breathes again and continues. “My dad told me when I was young that he won my mom over by being a tough trainer. She always loved that about him. But eventually she wanted more. She left him. She left me. She set out for her dream.”

You arch your eyebrows.

“Kat, my mom is the champion.”

You know, Robin's life might hurt more than ours. We never had parents, but she had to watch as they walked out of her life. No wonder she's so eager to please Kat, she must be so terrified at the thought of losing any more loved ones.
>>
Robin braces for the worst.

“That’s...that’s fine.” You’re a bit confused, what’s the big deal? You get why it’s important to her, but why make it a secret? “It’s fine Robin, really.”

“I-I thought you’d be mad. I’ve been keeping the reason I’m trying for the championship from you. I didn’t want to tell anybody. When I was young people would tell me I’d be a strong trainer because of my parents. I didn’t want to be a trainer at all if it meant being like her.” She looks up at you. “I don’t want to be anything like her.” Her voice trembles with anger. “I want to take it away from her.”

That line and intensity coming from Robin sends a chill down your spine.

>Promise you'll kick her ass if you make it there.

"You know, when we make it up there, I'll let you go first against her. Show her what she missed out on."

Robin smiles up at you warmly. “But you only get to challenge the champion after winning the tournament and beating the Elite Four.”

“We’ll figure something out,” you assure her, and yourself. You hug her. She hugs back but pulls away quickly.

“Kat, promise me you won’t let me stand in the way. That’s one of the reasons I didn’t want to tell you. Please. I can’t ask you to give up your dream. I’d never be able to live with myself. If you let me do something so awful I won't forgive you!”

You look her dead in her tearing eye. “I promise.”

“Thank you.” She kisses you.

You kiss back, then hold her. "Don't worry, I won't give up. Trust me, we'll figure out a way to do both. And if we can't, I'll just be the champ's girlfriend until I can beat you."

“T-That sounds great. I don’t mind being the champions girlfriend either.” A few moments go by. “W-wait! I mean if you’re the champion. Not right now!”

You laugh and hug her. You hold hands as you head back to your friends. You all leave the gym and set the lock behind you.

Jeanine stretches her arms. “So, now what?”

>>37768212
Hey Gobble, I just thought of this, but do you have anything to compensate for 4x weaknesses like gyarados to electric? Since the movepool isn't limited to 4, there's a way higher chance of 4x weaknesses being exploited.

That's a good point. I'll think it over. Besides just sort of lowering it down a bit, does anyone have any good ideas?

I want to try to keep battles going towards the anime/manga side of things, where it's less flat mechanics and more creative stuff. I don't want to go full on dumb like using Thunder as armor or aiming for the horn, but I'm hoping to keep it interesting enough that it isn't grinding or going through the motions.

Any suggestions on this are more than welcome
>>
Am I the only one that wants to do something nice for Jeanine. Her idea and skills saved Robin, she stayed up in case we ran out, and she helped us with megaevolution. She's a total bro
>>
>>37768362
>does anyone have any good ideas?
I think countering moves with moves of resisting typing already compensates for that.
Since we can have more than 4 we can train some that are mainly there to block others.
So in Gyarados case, she could learn thunderbolt to defend against other electricity attacks, for example.
>>
>>37768362

My suggestion is to treat them as regular super-effectives unless its also a STAB attack. For example, Levi gets in a fight with Devon and Dan, who both know electric attacks. Devon knows that Thunder Fang will hurt more, but just can't get focus it as well as Dan, so not only is it less damaging out the gate but Devon wouldn't know where would be a good place to discharge the electricity. Dan, on the other hand, knows not only how to focus the power, but knows where to land the hit for the most effectiveness.
>>
>>37768486
>My suggestion is to treat them as regular super-effectives unless its also a STAB attack.
I don't like that suggestion at all.
The weakness to a move, and the strength of a move should be two seperate things.
Making type weakness less relevant makes the fights strategically more flat.
It would remove the need to figure strategies to defend yourself against types your pokemon is particularly weak against, and making fights requires less thought is never a good thing.
>>
>>37768519

Point.

Its a pretty hard thing to work around though. Either we reduce the effectiveness of types, or we run the risk of any pokemon with a good movepool to run wild over us.

That said, hopefully there are a lot of creative anons who can think of more fun solutions, like >>37768464
>>
>>37768554
>or we run the risk of any pokemon with a good movepool to run wild over us
We can do the same thing though.
Our movepool isn't anymore limited, the only risk would be fights becoming hyperoffense all day, But the ability to use moves for defense too, off-sets that.
Like in the example >>37768486
Levi could learn Iron Head or Iron Tail to protect herself against the electricity attacks.

Another solution, which I'm not in favor of but it would be possble, would be training "resistance". To train a pokemon to learn how to make themselves less vulnerable against attacks they are weak against.
That could mean trying to figure out what makes that speciic pokemon weak to that type and trying to work around that.
The problem I see with this would be that logically on higher trainers we would encounter trainers that have done that for basically every weakness their pokemons have. And thats sorta dumb. So I would prefer the solution of using moves and battlefield shaping.
