Lyle sits in front of a holoscreen within the Angel as one of your flies digs its head into the wound on his artificial arm. He flips through several channels idly.
“A brief meteor shower caused a hold for several shuttle flights over Huron this evening, however the local weather service-” He changes the channel with a flick of his finger. The screen shows several atomic blasts spreading across the desert surface of Tadega. As the shockwaves roll over the shallow hills there is an almost imperceptible flash of light near the edge of the blast, like secondary explosions among volatile debris. “-has announced that the event was a scheduled test of anti-bombardment weaponry. The military has not commented on the incident since the initial press release.”

“Damn it!” Lyle tenses his arm as your drone jerks out its head with a small, warped bullet in its tiny, under developed mandibles. It quickly crawls to his shoulder and takes flight down the hall as Lyle’s arm begins to bleed a thick, black ooze of medical paste. By the time the launch clearance is sent it has scabbed over. As he gets up he waves his hand to dismiss the holoscreen as a ticker crawls under several talking heads arguing over politics: “Local astronomer hobbyist claims sudden increase in visible novae ‘unnatural’, officials dismiss findings as coincidence.”

>Anti-orbital battery – A bunker armed with a massive Particle beam capable of attacking ships in orbit from the ground. It includes the power and sensor systems required to operate it. 250N 1500M
>Surface to Orbit Missile System – This massive bunker complex houses a wide range of warheads and a nigh limitless number of missiles within its protective walls, allowing you to launch missiles against approaching invaders from the safety of your hive. The facility uses the ship missile stats and comes equipped with a single Cruise missile silo that can target any detected object within the system, five Stinger missile silos capable of targeting any craft within high orbit, and ten Swarm missile silos specialized in targeting high altitude aircraft and low orbiting targets. The facility itself is a massive complex spread out over several miles, and includes guidance and launch equipment, as well as the means to construct and maintain a stock of warheads and missiles. >Immolator warhead
[Can only be fired from cruise launchers]
This devastating and highly unstable warhead is capable of destabilizing the surface of a planet to cause planet wide destruction, triggering violent geothermal activity and weather patterns and rapidly turning the planet’s surface to molten slag and rendering it totally uninhabitable. The production of the weapon itself requires a lengthy and highly expensive process of condensing highly unstable exotic matter that is far too volatile for productive use and encasing it within a powerful magnetic field held within a shielded canister. Upon detonation, the canister releases the supply of anti-matter within the planet’s crust, causing a chain reaction of matter-anti-matter annihilation that ignites any atmosphere, immolates the surface, and obliterates any sign of infrastructure that may have existed.
(500,000N 500,000M[Ship])

>Molecular disassembler warhead
This warhead disperses a cloud of nano-disassemblers that promptly utilize all sources of metals and nutrients to replicate more disassemblers, which do the same. The process quickly reduces any infrastructure, ships, and life to dust in a chain reaction that can spread across entire cities. The nanomachines require a minimum amount to reach a critical mass before they begin to deactivate, but even a small warhead can potentially spread across a wide area.

>Thermal Blade
Conductive polymers are added to the combat blades of your drones. When an electrical current is passed through the blade it quickly increases in temperature until the blade itself begins to glow. All drones equipped with combat blades gain the capacity to penetrate thicker armor by allowing them to slowly burn through dense metal plating. This passive upgrade stacks with the Vibro-blade passive upgrade.

>Laser cooling
This concept uses a laser to bounce particles in an object back into place, effectively nullifying the energy within the object, cooling it to potentially extreme temperatures at a distance.

[Ventilation ray – Improvements in ship construction passively reduce the heat signature of all hive space craft by allowing some of the heat to be beamed away from the direction of enemy sensors instead of radiated into space and increasing the amount of time it can spend under cloak.]

>Ion cannon – This focused energy weapon is in essence a combination of CIP technology, a plasma lance, and a particle beam rolled into one device. It utilized powerful magnetic fields to funnel a stream of high energy particles at a target to cause the effect of a highly focused EMP on enemy electronics and sensors, wreaking havoc on the target’s sensors and other systems. While shields and conductive armor are highly resistant to it, the Ion cannon can pass through other forms of armor undeterred.
Dmg: Low energy
RoF: Low
Rng: Short
Acc: High
Special: Blackout – If the target is not shielded, all sensors are blinded for a short duration, and there is a large chance of a random system being permanently disabled. If a ship’s drive and weapons are disabled, it is considered a derelict.

New research unlocked

>Laser cooled superconductors
Medium
Utilizing powerful cooling rays to maintain a temperature of near absolute zero, superconductors can be constructed and maintained out of cheap and easily replicable materials and nearly no cost. This would allow for the construction and maintenance of various mass transport and logistical systems that would improve the efficiency of hive activity.

>Quantum Entanglement engineering
Slow [50,000N 50,000M development cost, paid once]
Experimentation with the behavior of entangled particles could reveal potential uses beyond simple communication. Your thinkers have several tests ready to proceed to test the interaction of quantum entanglement with your own technology, although the tests will require the construction of multiple prototypes and test devices that will likely not survive the experiments.

Current research

>Weather Spire
Medium
A specialty of The Gardener which was apparently shared with the Skyl to solidify their alliance. It is a massive spire capable of analyzing and altering the atmospheric composition of a planet over time, as well as altering localized conditions to alter weather patterns.

>Psionic Shroud
Slow
Your thinkers have been working over the strange and unsettling silence of the broken crystals you have collected and several of your quantum thinkers have theorized of using them to develop a kind of mute effect. In theory it could offer a way to muffle the mental sounds of your hive's thoughts from other hives.

>Psionic fortification
Slow
Further research of the white crystal’s beneficial effects on your own psionic link to your drones could lead to some manner of defense against a psionic jammer.

>Rejuvenation gene therapy
Slow
After extensive research of the human genome, you have discovered that they suffer from a limitation to their life span based on a pre-set limit built into their cells that limits the number of times any one cell can divide. With some amount of effort, you think you could create a serum that would offer a temporary boost to that limit, allowing for extended periods of cell division.

Available research options

>Psionic Cannon prototype
Very slow/Very dangerous
Detailed accounts of several experiments show the slow progress of Project Godsplitter. The cannon itself is highly volatile, and even the smallest miscalculation often results in the destruction of the ship, as well as any nearby craft. It can only be equipped to a Hive ship's spinal mount, and requires a functional Void Shard as ammunition. At least a dozen testing sizes were atomized in testing the weapon, and in the end it appears The Gardener never quite perfected it.

>Smart Mines
Medium
Replacing digger drones with programmable seeds of nanomachines allows the hive to effectively create metal trees. The nanomachines spread roots through the ground to locate ore veins, break them down and assemble them on the surface as metallic fruit-like bulbs for workers to gather.

>Liquid metal sculpting
Medium
By using nanomachines to maintain metal in a liquid form regardless of temperatures and without diluting it with chemicals, you can improve the quality of the Hive’s metallurgy, decreasing the time it takes your workers to perform metal intensive work in cramped spaces and dramatically boosting ship construction times.

>Carbon nanostructure construction
Medium
By using the ancient Raligha ship as a basis, and new construction techniques, you can implement more sturdy nanotubes and carbon based diamond filaments to slightly improve the stability and durability of your ships without impeding maneuverability or increasing cost.

>Cellular acceleration
Medium
By using advanced medical technologies to assist and boost the cellular metabolism of an organism, clones can be made to develop much faster than normal.

>>37781498

>Photosynthetic cells
Fast
By implementing the same cells used in many of the local foliage in infrastructure, you can create stations and buildings that produce energy via solar radiation to produce energy in a manner more safe and stable than fusion, although less efficient.

>Genesis Project
Medium
By studying the practices and techniques on top of the dedicated technologies of the Gardener's hive, you can develop a method that can be used to rapidly spread foliage and life on a planet to develop a new biosphere. The process is time and resource intensive at the start, but with the use of weather spires the biosphere quickly takes root and becomes self-sufficient.

>Gun ports
Fast
Your large drones offer a great increase in firepower in many situations, but in some cases can become vulnerable to smaller opponents. By developing a series of small muscle grafts along the sides of the drone’s thorax a number of medium sized weapons can be placed to offer increased firepower against smaller targets.

>Genetic tapestry
Medium
With the development of your recent clones, you have gained experience and knowledge in organizing alien DNA into effective and desirable formations to not only reproduce an alien subject, but also improve upon it. Now you feel you are ready to go even farther with your experiments in mixing and matching alien and drone DNA.
[Unlocks Chimera clone type]

Neither of you make any fucking sense.

Getting primitives "on our side" is useless, they have no tactical value.

Second, this is like offering 10,000 BC humans the chance to live on another planet instead of their own, letting aliens take it over.

Your thinkers dive into the new data, but you make sure to not overwhelm them. A few quickly finished research subjects is better than churning on them all for months, after all.

Your mind is in many places at once. You watch the locals of Raligha as they make their offerings to you, you watch your drones assemble the ever growing defense grids across both your worlds, you see the strange images of distant creatures move in and out of your sensor view at the bottom of Huron's ocean atop a small plateau, you see dozens of worlds through the eyes of your pods as they lurk through alien territory, and you watch as Lyle detaches the docking clamps as the small garage depressurized. You hear Jerry shouting over the radio. "You bastard, skimping out again?"

"Don't worry mate, I'll wire you the money later. I'm in a rush right now."

"My ass. I'm too charitable, you know that? You send me that money or so help me I'll call out a hit."

>might help in getting recognition from the Union

The Union?

You mean those guys that annex species and make them totally dependent on their (Humans) method of FTL travel right? The one where they control not only the distribution of the FTL drives themselves but also the materials necessary to construct them?

That Union?

The only recognition we NEED from the Union is the recognition that we are not to be fucked with, to fuck with us is courting death and destruction, even Theseus wouldn't step in to prevent them from getting their shit so righteously handed to them unless we threaten out and out xenocide.
>>
I'm still confused as to why we are risking our highly experienced merc / agent on rescuing a guy we met twice, and the first time was solely so we could study his species.

The pod moves after the Hel's Angel as it closes in on Gemini. The binary planets are tidally locked, and close enough together to be considered the same location by most. Between the two of them, at their communal lagrange point is a small starport surrounded by a multitude of shuttles moving from one planet to another, and from the station to locations beyond. Most of them appear to be automated freighters, slowly from one gravity well to the next. Several are in the process of deploying or retracting solar sails as they drift along the space lane, and after a short wait in a parking orbit the station responds to the Angel's hail. A spiraling path is laid out along the ship's hud and it descends.

The planet is oddly lopsided in its settlement, you note, with the half facing Gemini's twin, the military capital, nearly covered in city scapes and urban sprawl. The side facing away is nearly blank, a vast rural area of temperate forests and mild jungles mixed with farmland and sparse townships.

You see the capital of New Prescott directly under the twin Gemini, shadowed by an eclipse. The position, you note, would make any long range bombardment difficult at best. You wonder if that was intentional, or simply a result of their settling both worlds together.

The flight path leads near the edge of the city, where the city is at its densest. The sprawling megacity appears almost suburban near the center, where laws and aesthetic regulations likely prevent more than a select few high rise buildings, while further out the skyline reaches upwards to scrape at the lower atmosphere.

You ponder how to get your pod to the surface unseen. There are likely many security measures in place to monitor traffic within orbit, although the rural half of the planet does appear almost devoid of traffic.

Docking with a cloaked pod in deep space would make your pod far too visible for your liking, and dropping in above the city could go wrong in many ways. You decide on the safer method, even if your clones will need to find their way into the city the hard way.

Your pod descends slowly into the atmosphere.

Your pod feels the friction of the atmosphere as it descends, and its cloak begins to flicker. Your pod is quickly engulfed in fire as it plummets to the ground.

It is well into the night over what appears to be some sparsely populated farmland. A few floodlights reveal a number of crop fields being worked by large machines, while others remain dark. Your pod fires its thrusters in an attempt to slow its descent and grinds its hull against the soft soil as it comes to a stop. The hatch of the pod pops open and your three clones emerge. You observe the landing site through their eyes.

The pod has landed in what appears to be a kind of wheat field. The crop is high enough to offer some cover, but the smoldering hull of your pod has singed the surrounding plants, causing wispy streams of smoke to flow from the landing site. You can hear the barking of dogs in the distance and several hundred meters away a light flicks on from within a small house.

The thrusters of your pod hum to life and it lifts itself into the air as your clones gather their things. A sudden urge enters their mind as they pack their gear and they sprint away from the fields to the treeline. You can hear animals barking and the shouting of voices, and your pod quickly sends itself into the forest. You hear the sound of treetops cracking and branches snap as it passes through the dense foliage of a pine forest.

By the time your clones have entered the treeline you can see flashlights behind you within the fields where your pod had landed. You feel confident in your clones' survival skills on such a hospitable world, and you turn your attention back to Lyle.

The Angle cruises over the metropolitan districts of the Gemeise megacity on a course for a small docking facility. The area is worn in appearance, with towering buildings covered in machinery and infrastructure. Residential blocks, factories, and low class market streets cover the ground in a mix of old buildings of all sizes and designs. Sandwiched between a hydrogen processor and a warehouse is a small circle in the ground. A large elevator rises from below and the Angel slowly lands on a set of outstretched docking clamps before lowering the ship into the circle and sliding it into one of the many small hangars within.

A quick stutter of static precedes a simple broadcast.
"Welcome to Moe's starport. Fair is paid prior to departure.
We reserve the right to impound your craft in the event of non-payment."

You look to Lyle. "Have you been here before?" He grimaces.
"Yes, I have, and no, Moe had that policy before I met him."

Lyle moves to the locker where he takes a small sidearm and tucks it in a dark brown jacket. A "privy coat", you realize. Made of a special cloth designed to defeat customs scanners. They often could only reliably conceal a basic sidearm before becoming a liability, and even then they always had issues with more advanced scanners typically found around high class starports, another reason Lyle had chosen this as his port.

Just outside the ship is a set of gates leading along a labyrinthine rout from the center of the port to the customs booth. A bored looking man sits within.

"Hello Mr. Forester." He says, "Do you have any freight to load or unload, or is there a possibility of you requiring the need of a loader?"

"No, I have a visa already, can we speed this up?" Lyle passes a forged document to the official, who glances over it and passes it back. "I would also like to register my ship for protection under the Homestead act."

"Yes sir. What items would you like to register?"

Lyle seems to think for a moment. "Ah, let's see. Several pounds of plastic explosives, a combat hard suit with move asist capable of several times the legal force, a high capacity autocannon, six micro-pod guided missiles, and a sonic sledge."

The man looks far more attentive. "What exactly-"

"I don't need to tell you why I have it, so long as I tell you it's there and it stays in the ship." Lyle says smugly. The man quickly presses several keys and passes a ticket through the window. As the gate opens your ghostly figure gazes at him sternly.
"What? Homestead act makes honesty the best policy, unless you plan on smuggling."

"So long as it's disclosed, a man's ship is considered immune to local law pertaining to the ownership and use of any item, product, substance, or commodity." Lyle rehearses it like a well practiced verse. "So long as it never leaves the ship. It's a great policy, if it weren't for the fact that not invoking it also waives your right to privacy. Of course, not many people actually know about that one-line earmark in that particular law."

Lyle steps outside into the strange light of Gemini. It was frigid and windy, with a partial eclipse overhead as the planet's twin hangs in front of Tau Ceti. The sounds of trains and passing shuttles is deafening, punctuated by periodic curses shouted from the sites of fender benders.

Elsewhere, in the depths of Huron's ocean, your corvettes have sealed the leaks in their hulls and have settled into the reef and rock outcropping of the plateau. Your drones are waiting for your orders, and are eager to prove themselves on this new world.

Your drones march along the sea floor. You find all manner of strange creatures drifting along in the darkness. They find small, spinning creatures like fluorescent strips of living rubber, a long, snake like creature stuck to a rock like a leech, and a number of gossamer specters dragging tendrils behind them as they pulse light jets of water behind them.

There is more crunching, like grinding stones against bone, but it is from a great distance beyond the ledge of the plateau, and your drones are perfectly happy where they are. You move to investigate a small creature that bursts open in response, spilling its innards over your drone's claw. Your drone moves away and to your surprise it sucks its organs back into its belly and quickly swims away. Fascinating.

As your drones search the area you hear a loud ping from under a drone. It stops to move the silt away with its claw and dig below, and you find heavily worn letters. You continue to wipe away the silt until you can make out what it says.

USV Spirit of Huron

Your other drones find similar pieces of wreckage scattered along a line, a corvette sized shipwreck of an ancient starship. You detect no signs of unstable matter, and no apparent blast from an imploding Power Tap. You wonder if this wreck is old enough to have been before the Union's use of such technology.

Your drones proceed to dig into the sea floor, quickly finding and entering hull fragments to take account of the wreck. The debris is scattered over several miles of the plateau and not much remains intact. Eventually you do find several modular cargo pods containing processed food. While you doubt any of it is still acceptable to eat, your drones have little problem digesting it.
+623N

Your drones continue to search for anything more among the segments of hull and discarded cargo pods.

Elsewhere, in another expedition site, your drones have finished repairs of your damaged corvette, and your workers have freed the chunk of lunar debris from the lakebed in the center of the swampy crater on Earth. Your warriors have split their patrols between the corvette's crash site and the dig site, but apart from the occasional movement from the brush, the swamp has been calm in the past few days.
While your workers have removed the debris from the mud of the lakebed, it is still far too heavy for them to lift. You could have them simply pry open the object within the water, or have your ship lift it.

According to records, they used nuclear fusion, which meant ships were very limited in speed. According to records, ships of the day were often around a light year per day, sometimes less.

Many civilian ships and freighters still use fusion, although advancements mean they can go somewhat faster.

well I mostly just use the word ceph since we actually haven't got a damn clue who's pulling there strings.

For all we know it's the black queen since back in the thread when we saw here talking to Gardner and the other queens she claimed to have access to the black crystals. Not that I really believe that just saying we really don't know who the ring master is.

Best not spoil any sensitive innards.

The same question could be applied to Them themselves I suppose. They don't seem to actively attack military targets without provocation. In her memories our mom was rather surprised she managed to gain Their attention when the Ceph (or whoever they were) attacked her. Maybe They were already aware of her existence long before they killed her.
>>
>>37786533
> remnant of an experimental psionic cannon or something similar
This is the part that intrigues me. So far only the Hive and it's allies are the only ones who have developed the psionic cannon. And the destruction and power of the weapon used on Luna matches that of a psionic cannon.
If what the humans found on the moon were the void shards, They wouldn't have any reason to give the humans tech that uses one of their own as ammunition.
Unless, what was at the moon wasn't a void shard.
>>
>>37786527
which reminds me I have a question. remember when we found Gardner's body and through her we learned all of her drone designs. Think if we could actually find our mother's body it would help us develop the psionic canon?
>>
>>37786660
Most probably, if we ever mount an expedition to Repreive again, and if QD doesn't say that the 1 we rolled means no more chance of finding mom's body.
>>
>>37786645
It might have been a large void shard like what the Skyl had.
>>
>>37786645
They found the shards, the void gods presumably wanted them to do... Something. They used the shards for a canon. Since Humans aren't psionic sensitive the crystals opened Steiner's dad's ears or something. In Steiners memories his dad mentioned "They want to be found." Alluding to the crystals wanting to get back to the void gods or something similar.

That's all the knowledge relating to the moon and crystals being related

Your corvette lifts from the ground, sending plants and mud spraying into the air as its thrusters come to life. It drifts over the lake and soon your workers have hooked a series of tendon wires to the sunken capsule. It is quickly plucked from the water and placed on the shores.

Your drones slowly carve into the thick shell and eventually pry open what appears to be an eroded hatch. Water pours from the capsule and spoiled paperwork and ancient lab equipment spills onto the shore. The bones of a human collapses into pieces in front of you, and your drones move into the small chamber to search its interior.

Various forms of plantlife hang from the walls, and everything is covered in a smooth layer of algae. Near the center is a collection of machines and tubes running into a large canister, within which is a faint mental signal. Somehow after all this time, a select few of the machines still seem to hum with life. A skeletal hand from the human remains clutches the side of the canister.

There is a familiarity to the signal, like an echo, but it is far too weak to hold meaning.

Your corvette descends for your drones to begin to load the newly found relics. As your drones prepare to load the materials you hear a crack followed by a loud ping as something ricochets off of your ship's hull.

Your warriors quickly take positions along the edge of the swamp, and one of them spots movement among the trees. There is a muzzle flash and you feel a small slug slap against your warrior's carapace, leaving a small crack along its arm. Your workers pick up their pace, but the materials are heavy even for them.

Your warriors are advanced, they have the advantage in both strength and speed, but you have a hard time seeing the natives before they can fire, and they clearly know every inch of the swampland by heart. Several more rounds slap against your drones, each one leaving a small crack. These weapons are not powerful, but it appears there are many more than before.

Your drones open fire, filling the air with chitinous slugs and tearing into the foliage. Shots continue to ring out as they move from bush to bush and tree to tree, with weapons fire coming from what seems like all directions.

You hear several screams of surprise as your warriors close the distance at the speed of a human vehicle, and you quickly spot the first of them, although even now they seem to be slipping away into the swamp. The first of your warriors sprints at the enemy position, and you see the native reel back in panic as your warrior brings its blades to bear. You watch the native fall back and vanish beneath the algae encrusted water, and before you can plunge your claws in after him a set of large mechanical jaws clench around your warrior. You feel its legs crumple and the metal spiked teeth sink into its carapace with the grating sound of rusty springs. The drone sees a spiked tooth enter its compound eye, and it winks out of your mind.

The other drones blanket the area with chitinous slugs, but the natives have already managed to move. A slug pierces the wings of a warrior as it leaps through the canopy, and you watch from its eyes as the straw covered ground gives way to a pit of lined spikes and sharpened wooden stakes. Most of the stakes break against your warrior's carapace, but enough don't, and your drone becomes pinned in the ground.

You see a shot rupture the eye case of a warrior as it searches for the source of the incoming fire, and you call your warriors to pull back to the corvette.

"Mother! Bad things have tricks!" A warrior calls to you in anguish as a spring loaded spike pins it to a tree like a mouse trap. It struggles to free itself, forcing the spike further into the cracked carapace until you feel it fade. "Could not kill for Mother..."

Your drones call back, forming around your workers as they continue to take heavy fire from the primitive rifles. Each shot stings, but your warriors are well defended against it. They bounce off at best, leaving a small crack for the next to find its way in, but they seem to have learned from their past battle. They aim for the cracks along the legs and arms, and the soft casing of your drones' eyes.

Your warriors manage to cut down at least a dozen of the howling humans as they move from cover to close the distance, and as the foliage grows thinner closer to the dig site their advantage wanes. They are forced to halt several hundred meters from the lake, and they dig into cover behind the trees and thick, gnarled branches.

There is a shutter in the air as your corvette's drive flickers to steady itself, and its auxiliary weapons swivel in all directions. They unleash a hellfire of superheated slugs into the swamp with the sound of rolling thunder. Trees vaporize into splinters in moments and wisps of pink mist fill the air around you.

They stop, and for a moment there is silence. Then you hear screaming. Your corvettes swivel their main turrets and a beam of light cracks out to the ground like a bolt of straight lightning. It carves a smoldering path over the locations of your fallen drones, incinerating any remnants in a single pass and leaving a burning scar on the landscape. As the turrets of your ship carves into the swamp like a scalpel into tissue your workers finish loading the valuable cargo, and your drones quickly enter the ship.

The corvette lifts into the air and accelerates into orbit, quickly reaching the dense debris field. Before you can even bring your cloak back up you feel the light peppering of the innermost layers of space junk and lunar silt.

Please roll 1d100, best of 3

Actually, most humans in the Union speak Esperanto. English is still somewhat common, but is mostly found in the Commonwealth. These people speak a mixture of mostly Spanish, Cajun, and various latin languages, with only hints of English.

You know, it was a mistake not to deploy more egglayers on away missions.

Like, Lyle and the hybrids. they could use a small egglayer to keep them supplied with Flies and Parasites as needed, for all your infiltration needs.

And Huron, seriously i think QD was heavily hinting that it was a good idea to send one, because otherwise we have to spend a day sending a new corvette, and then rolling to land through the hypercane weather, to send down new kinds of drones.

And we do want to lay new, more ocean-adapted drones once we unlock an Aquadynamic chassis or something with fins, that doesn't have to crawl like a crab.

Your corvette emerges in a largely debris-free section of Earth orbit, although you can see patches of lunar chunks and starships closing in on all sides. Within the ship's halls a sound like rain against a tin roof echoes through the hull as the ship deflects clouds of microscopic debris. It quickly envelops itself in a cloak of twisted light as it leaves orbit and accelerates to the edge of the system.

You take account of the two Earthlings you had taken from the surface. They remain unconscious and healing from now minor wounds. Within the day your corvette should be far enough from the system to blink safely back to your hive, and you will be able to more appropriately accommodate them.

Surprisingly, you have accomplished much of what you needed to do today, and while the tasks of a queen are never done, you delegate the menial tasks of construction and maintenance to the back of your mind as you review the activities around you.

Lyle has boarded a tram en route to a residential district to regroup with his... friends. Your clones have hidden your pod under collections of foliage and branches, and have settled into a small cave for the night, intent on moving out in the morning. Coil has been in a depressed pile of boneless goop for the past few days, and as you peer into his mind you can tell he is still having trouble digesting he latest revelation. His world is shattered, and while your parasite is guiding him along, he is still clinging to his teachings to some extent. Huey and Dewy have been given a parasite each, and you have studied their biology in great detail with their time in your medical pods. Theseus is still expecting your dispatched settlers to Zero One, as you had agreed, and Elizabeth appears to have found some source of inspiration, and is currently assisting your thinkers with the Psionic Shroud prototypes within your labs.

Right, about that. If we do this we have to limit what we send and what we do. Our drones will be under heavy heavy surveillance, and he knows that we know. And we know that he knows that we know, and he knows that we know that he knows.
Our decision to send drones to zero one and his offer was a kind of trust arrangement, showing that we trust eachother. We both have a lot to lose of the other party has other plans, but I don't think we should establish a base. Just gathering specimens.

After bump limit, so. Hive growth-wise.

We aren't growing as fast as we could. For instance, Film Harvesters? There's zero mechanic preventing us from saturating the film by as much as is sustainable immediately.

With farms, creating them takes effort from workers. But Film harvesters? We just have to lay the eggs, and we don't have a limit for how many eggs to lay in a day. We can bring the number of them up to 2000 or twenty thousand, or whatever the planet can support, almost immediately.

We also haven't colonized the Waystation planet, which would make a good, very well hidden base to put hundreds of docking pylons, which we need to grow the ship fleet.

>Land in the plains

You are unfamiliar with planets of this great of gravity, and you send your ship into a very gradual descent. It slowly enters the atmosphere and begins to glide on the thick blankets of air. Even before you touch down you spot strange creatures. Massive birds the size of buildings glide through the sky on wings spanning nearly fifty meters or more, held aloft by the dense atmosphere. Their heads hold large crests of wing-like formations to aid in lift, and their tails are long and flat, and from their underbellies hangs collections of small tumorous growths where nests have been carved by what appears to be a young similar to a kind of giant larva. Half-mile long trails of skin drag from behind, and at the end of each one is a smaller creature, possibly adolescents learning to fly.

Your ship slowly drifts by a formation of the elegant beasts, who gracefully evade your approach, circling your ship with curiosity and hesitation. They seem to tire of watching your meandering landing and move on.

That's all for tonight, we can spend the rest of the thread discussing ways to automate micromanagement issues, as well as voting on designs, new drone/ships, and construction options.

We can automate farm expansion, which also just finished just now.

But it depends. How much faster does having one Excavator per 5 new farms being built accelerate the project? One excavator and 5 workers to put the finer touches on each farm?

I figure we want to dedicate between 20 and 30% of farm income back into building additional farms, but not more than that.

I have an idea of what to do with the Ralligha situation.

I propose we tell them to hold an election among themselves, and hold three elections. The winner of each election will then be 'risen above' to become the new gods of Ralligha. We take them to an orbital ship that we convert into their living quarter populated with specialized speakers. We tell them they are now gods, and let them make decisions for what to do with their people using our drones. We will say the speakers on the ship are their drones, and they will only operate under their command. They will follow any orders given by at least two of the three new Ralligha gods, and 'command' the other drones to action. The natives will think they are actually gods and begin to fight among each other over needing two thirds to take out any action. The Ralligha should develop more organically, since it will be there own people trying to use tools to fix their situation in a way that they understand. It should be an organic process. Also whenever a 'god' dies, the Ralligha should hold a vote for a new god.

Should also be entertaining.

If we double the number of farms consistently, it would run numbers like this: 2k 4k, 8k ... 512k, 1 million farms, after 9 doublings.

If we set the number of workers at 10 per farm, that's 20N / 20% of farm income.

If we add 1 Excavator for every 5 new farms, dedicated to accelerating construction only, it would add about another 4% of farm income total.

Excavators as miners are less efficient than just using mining corvettes anyway, and they'll be obsoleted by Smart Mines soon. So on to their original purpose: Constructing really fast.

I seem to remember that our queen has a sweet tooth for that stuff.

Your farms have now officially hollowed out the mountains around your hive, and you are well on your way to hollowing out the mountains of other sites as well. So far I have assumed you have been wanting to avoid spreading your hive over the surface of Leeland unless absolutely needed, but it's getting to the point that you will need to start spreading the hive creep to better accommodate drone travel and resource allocation.

And as for your diggers, they are essentially workers, but their additional senses allow them to locate ore by their magnetism. Your smart mines will, sadly, render them obsolete entirely.

Your original hive has become a kind of spaceport, with most of your docking pylons near it, as well as the hangar bays. The missile system is located along the open planes on the other side of the jungle.

You have also settled numerous other mountain ranges to be used as defensive locations, all of which are filling with farms. Subterranean highways are slowly being built, using capillaries for liquid resource transport, while shuttles are used to move drones quickly. If you allow your hive creep to begin overtly creating surface infrastructure, then large networks of resource capillaries will connect the hives, with pressurized highways used to send drones from place to place in capsules, similar to a bank's air pressure pipes used to move letters, but on a larger scale. It will also begin extracting nutrients from the surrounding landscape as it builds, temporarily boosting income.

This will, of course, mean that anyone in orbit will clearly see your hive, as it will at that point cover nearly a quarter of the surface of Leeland as it runs from hive to hive.

As for removing micromanagement, my initial thought was to essentially simplify drone and ship construction into swarms and fleets. Instead of voting to lay a number of drones, you would instead vote to create a hive fleet of ships, or a swarm of drones and they would be formed from any existing units, with additional weapons, drones, and ships being made to fill any missing numbers, with any lost being automatically replaced.
I was thinking it would work pretty much like the fleet mechanic in Distant Worlds.

For example, you could vote to make a 'raiding fleet' which could include a number of corvettes equipped with shuttles and drop pods, and a pre-selected compliment of combat drones such as heavy warriors, wasps, and colossi. Whenever you loose deployed drones in combat, new ones are layed and sent to replace them.

How do you like it? Thoughts?
My main goal is to make choices simple, yet important.
>>
>>37791478
Really don't think we need more than 500 Shuttles total.

Though I think you don't go far enough with the Film Harvesters. Bring the number of them up to 4000 harvesters.

You didn't even build any proper ships all. Let's build:
- 100 Vanguard Frigates
- 50 Fleet Corvettes
- 20 Mining Corvettes

>>37791858
They are, but you still need to use the surface for things like ventilation towers to regulate temperature and provide surface access for patrolling drones. There is also support for adding ships, since we are starting with our (hopefully) less crunchy unit management, we can vote for fleets instead of individual ships.

By default, if ships already exist to fill the fleet, they will be used first, but if you wish to build the fleet fresh you can specify that.

>>
>>37792041

>>
>>37792025
You would build the fleet for a purpose, and replacements would be done automatically.

As it is you have a bunch of ships, and when you want any of them to do something you need to make sure you have the right ships, then choose which ones to send, and what drones to send with them. With fleets (again, I hope) you will be able to simple order a fleet that can accomplish a kind of goal, like a patrol fleet, or a picket fleet, or an assault fleet, or an escort fleet, ect, and that way you don't need to fiddle with numbers just before sending troops into battle, or worry about replacing them.

If it doesn't work I'm always willing to toss it and replace it with something that does.
>>
if we do build highway and get noticed do you think we should go ahead and build our diplomat drone sooner so when the Union finally do figure out we're not just simple stone smashers we're ready to go?

Also on the note of the diplomate I had an idea. do you think we should give it some extra sensor organs? not as much as a sniffer or fly of course but maybe something to help it pick up a conversation from across the room. Ships not in a fleet will randomly run patrols in Hive space, serve as trade ships between your planets, and extract resources as needed. We can go ahead and say they are a reserve, and will be enlisted in fleets as needed.

It would have made nanomachines available for research, but the research would have been slower.

The vectorized star field in the background reminds me of the background art in the homeworld games for some reason.

They are constructing one in FG-883.

If only we had enough covert agents established already to be able to slip parasites onto the spines of their engineer-priests while they sleep.

The current hive's metallurgy was said to make the Clarke, to the human eye, look "like shit."

Would liquid-metal sculpting research mean metallurgy on, say, fusion reactors, would be viewed less skeptically by human aesthetic senses?

Probably.
Hive metallurgy processes result in the metal taking a shape similar to shaped clay, or a wave of liquid suspended and held still. Currently, metals are melted down and diluted in a solution of chemicals, which result in a kind of metallic cement that can be applied and shaped as needed. Liquid metal sculpting will improve the purity of the metal involved, but not the resulting aesthetic.

Humans utilize prefabricated sheets welded or riveted together, and while you would be able to mimic the design if you tried, it would increase the cost of production and the time required. Although it may also be possible to attempt to market the alternate aesthetic as a feature.

The, uh, photoshop background indicator is visible just a bit right at the top.
