You clatter into the streets, accompanied by a lazy snake, a laughing elf, a confused wolf, and a moth wiping away false tears,

"To have my lady recognized in such a way! The simple utterance of her name enough to inspire such feelings!"
Where is she even getting this vocabulary? Reading? You didn't think she spent all that much time with books.
Maybe from when she was younger, then?

Still, they're fairly big words, all told.

Someone is probably teaching her.
Betrayal of the utmost level.

In any case, it's something you'll have to deal with later.

You have a pair of badges in hand- Sheszka is already wearing hers proudly at her throat. It almost looks like part of a collar, but that's fine. You don't have to actually wear it- just pull it out when you're taking jobs and so on.
Of course, the wolf-girl is watching you carefully, waiting for you to follow suite, so you affix it at your shoulder, neatly concealing a joint beneath it.

With four for four companions currently pleased with the state of things, you can probably spend the time to hunt down Jin. Locate Jin.
It might not be considered hunting, seeing as she's most likely ling in bed still.

It's just the way things work.

Any really good places she would recommend for a Spider adventurer just starting out?

I think it's for stuff where you need to be given tools and equipment. The Guild will only give away free stuff to full employees.

Just going in to use the sparing ring or something is fine. In fact, we're already done that, and no one complained.

IIRC those laws appeared as a result of industrialisation massively abusing child labor.

If you ban child labour in a medieval society you cripple the ability of tradesman to pass their trade on to their children and apprentices.
>>
>>37800137
Thats not really what falls under "child labor". People still do that.
>>
Well, the badge is shiny.
So, if nothing else, Jin will certainly be happy.

You change directions, chitin clicking noisily against the occasionally stone. Weaving between buildings, it doesn't take long for you to reach the edge of the village, Jin's cabin sitting beneath their lonely tree.

You wonder if the nest actually sees any use nowadays.
Poor Lia.

You knock politely, even going so far as to wait for a response before you let yourself in. Truly, a saintlike existence.

Lann barely makes it through the door before she ducks back out again, choking as she tries to keep herself from laughing too loudly.
Jin lay half on the bed, her legs tangled in sheets and her wings spread wide. Gently snoring, someone had taken some small pity on her and tucked a pillow beneath her head, propping her off the floor.

You look to Lia, raising an eyebrow.
She snorts.
"Don't give me that look. There's no helping that one, yes."
"She sleeps normally on my shell, yes?"

The harpy mother shakes her head, letting loose a small laugh.
"What part of sleeping in a giant skull on the back of an Arachne is normal, exactly?"
"I, ah. Can't really argue that, I suppose."
"Mmm. And what sort of trouble are you up to today, little one?"

"Planning, yes."
"Planning?"
"What to do when we leave. Where to go, how to do it. That sort of thing, yes?"
"And you've managed to decide on something?"

"A caravan to the trade city, probably. And then on to the elflands."
"And here I was waiting for you to answer with 'everywhere!'"
"I am not that bad!"
"Of course, dear."

You cross your arms, trying to hide your blush behind bluster.
"How do you plan on joining a caravan, then? You don't quite cut the figure of a merchant you know. Far too skinny."
"We signed up with the guild, yes? Just registered, so we can find work wherever we go."
"Sometimes, you are far too much like your mother, yes."
>>
There was no child labor in the middle ages ...
Mostly due to the fact, that you where considered an aduld once you where able to work...
>>
>>37800053
>industrialisation massively abusing child labor

More a case of industrialisation allowing society to operate without child labour. In pre-industrial societies, kids have to start work early as a matter of survival.

Then things improved. People noticed we didn't need to keep doing things the same way any more. Kids didn't need to work just to live. Society could afford luxuries like sending kids to school instead of to the factories.
>>
>>37800178
You turn your head as your cheeks burn.
"Yes, well- I have a badge for Jinni. May I steal her?"
"Feel free, please. I can't clean the cabin with that flopping all over everything."
"Thanks."

It might be something that seems odd to be used to, but- Well, it is Jin.

You grab her wings carefully, folding them properly against her, tucking her legs forward, and dropping the newly formed harpy ball into the appropriate slot.
"I'll bring her back sometime soon, yes."
"Please, give me at least a bit of a break."

You laugh and wave, scuttling back out of the cabin, letting the door swing shut.
Lann is wiping her eyes, catching her breath in the yard.
"Is it really that funny?"
"You're a little to used to her, I think."
You shrug.

You tuck yourself beneath the tree, dropping into a seat and taking advantage of the shade.
"You aren't going to wake her up?"
"She'd go back to sleep in short order, yes? If we wait till dinner, She'll be active enough."
"You're going to sit under a tree till dinner?"

"Mm. How about a story, then?"
"It's up to me, then?"
"I am only a few months old, yes? I am out of stories already."
"Eh. You'll be making new ones in short order."
"Well, until then..."
"Yeah, I get it. Well...."

The half drops next to you, leaning up against you as she talks.
"How about my first dungeon, then? Or d'you want to hear more stuff about caravans? You seem a little obsessed."

Obviously they don't do it anymore to the same extent they used to. But even in medieval times children largely began learning their parents trade by helping out in whatever small ways they could until they acquired more skill. And that is still often a thing.
Really, the bigger difference is the change in understanding of what "labor" means legally.
>>

>>
>>37800188
Wasn't there period between those. I.e. before industry, apprenticeship is THE education you're getting. And it'll get you through life.

But then people would just teach kids one manufacturing step and make them do it and only it in the manufacturing process. So you get big output of goods, but the kids are fucked over.
>>
>>37800409
Also the definition of child, people were considered adults at a much younger age back then.
>>
>>37800489
Thats really less the problem.
No one would have called a nine year old a adult in medieval times, but they definitly already worked in whatever trade or craft their parents practiced.

>>
Guys... guys.
I ask REQM that as a joke please stop
>>
>>37800435
It was never that clear cut. Before, during, and after that time period, some kids would be apprenticed to skilled craftsmen, getting what education came with the trade. Some just worked as labour.

If you were the son of a farmer, you tilled the soil from a young age. The son of a miner led the pit ponies. The son of a factory worker worked the cotton looms.

While the son of a skilled artisan got to laugh at the plebs.
>>
>>37800536
AS this is in a different Universe than us , i won't take issue unless sb in universe does...
>>
>>37800579
Its a joke anyway. Monsterkin age different from humans, and the people in Oakring have lived together with harpies for a long time and seen that at work firsthand for generations.
Pretty sure REQM had a ask about that already once.

Gin has gained the power to manipulate peoples emotions through muscle flexing, and has started a line of protein shakes.

Caffeine has been outlawed by the empire and The chief of police was first in line to protest that shit.

"Dungeons are fine, yes."
"Please don't restrain yourself for my sake, milady."
Nin giggles. You glare.

"Don't you start."
Lann raps her knuckles against your shell.
"Yes, yes."

"Well, let's see..."
She clears her throat, leans back.

"It was after I'd arrived in the trade city. I was looking for work at the guild-"
"They post dungeons on the board?"
"Wha- No, no. Gods, can you imagine? Either there'd be so many people you'd choke the monsters with bodies, or fighting each other, or- No. Dungeons don't get posted. At most, there might be a private board for adventurers looking for more people to work with."

You nod.
"Well- It's pretty obvious when somebody's browsing for work, and I got called over by a few senior adventurers, right?"
"Oh?"
"Asking questions like 'What's your specialty?' 'What weapons do you use?'- They were looking for a tracker, So I wound up heading out with them."

"A tracker for a dungeon, though?"
"Well, I'd have the same expression, but let me finish, alright?"
"Mhm."

"So, we headed out- They needed me to track some monsters back to their lair."
"Ah."
"Yeah. It was easy enough- The creatures were some sort of undead. They weren't the type to clean their trails."
"They aren't intelligent, then?"
"Nah. We followed the tracks back, but instead of a grave- Well- There was a weird arch, sitting alone in a clearing. The footprints went in one side, but not out the other."
"A portal?"

"Seems like it. And one that only opened at certain times. So everyone was arguing about what to do, and so on, when the portal started to open."
"The undead were coming out, yes?"
"Yeah. Not that that stopped them at all- The second it was wide enough, they started to dive through."
"What was using a portal like?"
"Nauseating. And arrows aren't much use against bones, for that matter."

"I'd imagine not."
"Someone lent me a club."
"A club?"
"It's pretty effective as far as skeletons go."
>>
>>37801531
"Okay."
"After that, we-"
Lann keeps talking, even as shadows start to grow longer along the ground.

_________________________________________________________

"-and the last room-"
"Yes?"
"A gigantic mausoleum."
"Then the skeletons were from people?"
"Nah. It seems like there was a magical circle that just summoned them up."

"Then the mausoleum was just because.... Wizards."
"Mmm."
"Bloody wizards."
"Pretty much, yeah."

"Are all dungeons constructed, then?"
"By people?"
"Yes?"
"It seems like there's a few eternal ones. But most are."
"Huh. Maybe I will ask Sara, yes."

"Does Sara know anything about dungeons?"
"No."
"Then?"
"If it's something interesting, she'll study it, yes?"

Lann laughs.

Behind you, a particular feathery head perks up, eyes blinking themselves clear as she looks around.
"Lyra?"
"Jin."

>For some reason it feels like our level progression has slowed down to a crawl
Because it has, since we were so far ahead of everyone else, obviously we stopped growing so fast.
Of our siblings only Aria is anywhere near our Level, and she is still several weeks and 28 levels ahead of her.
Jin and Sheszka are going to get ahead of us in levels and evolution very soon, because their species grow much faster than arachne do.

I'd say only the Hydra and maybe the Ruins restoration/bath building were Achievement worthy, the latter both probably as "large scale earth manpulation".
I think the smithing and our spell learning from Sara will also factor into it, similar to how weapons-/magictraining figures into Lord evolutions.
>>
>>37801743
>What I can see achievement worthy
Saving Sheszka's life should definitely belong in that category. Maybe we'll get an upgrade to our protection blessing.
>>
>>37801793
>Jin and Sheszka are going to get ahead of us in levels and evolution very soon, because their species grow much faster than arachne do.

Aren't the supposed to slow down somewhere around this point?
>>
>>37801796
>Saving Sheszka's life
We didn't really do that anymore than we saved her life by adopting her to begin with.
Putting ourselves between our friends and the Hydra, and adopting even more charges to protect might do that though.

Another thing we forgot which is Achievement worthy, our scaring the shit out of a bunch of monster in the forest. Thats definitly worth something.

>>37801820
>Aren't the supposed to slow down somewhere around this point?
In the same way we did, but they will always grow faster then we do on the same stage.
>>
>>37801842
>adopting even more charges
> scaring the shit out of a bunch of monster
This collecting monster companions and establishing dominance over a whole pack of monster, together with our expedition and coordinating our friends in the fights.
I think we might be working towards some form of leadership themed evolution.

No Moth, I swear.

Lay on hands would be pretty rad. Or berserker mode when a teammate gets damaged.
>>
>>37801786

To be fair, Aria became a Half-lord, and Lord-type evolutions are basically saying "Instead of becoming a superior monsterbutt, I got really good at this one thing."

I find it slightly amusing that both of most evolved siblings, Sara and Aria, are basically useless against Lyra, what with her Forge-touch "All your metal is now liquid." and Magic Cancel / Break / Steal.
>>
>>37801842
>scaring the shit out of a bunch of monster in the forest

Yeah we Metal Spider Queen!
wait we don't want to be Queen.

Man Brütal Legend had awesome sights
>>
>>37801914
Basically the only things that would be a serious threat to Lyra at this point are things that attack with natural weapons or psionic foes that would turn our friends against us.
>>
>>37801926

If we had rolled Sound and Earth (Metal) as our element / affinity, we probably could have become that.

It's still possible actually.
>>
>>37801909
Technically we've already gone into a berserker state before, on those kobolds threatening Nin's sister. That's how we gained the blessing of the demi god of protection. And I'd love to see Lyra take the gloves off so to speak in a fight again, now that she's evolved twice.

Without those, all the Grave Spider would be "yeah you like to tank giant monsters, now you get to tank them better, have fun". Boring.
>>

Actually, she is now a Gem Lord.
Our sister isn't some generic evolution.

>>
>>37802039

>>
>>37802039

All Lord-type evolutions are pronounced by horns and gems.

She is a Half-Gem Lord.

She got a scrub evolution.
>>
>>37802022
>Without those, all the Grave Spider would be "yeah you like to tank giant monsters, now you get to tank them better, have fun".
Grave Spider isn't the tank evolution though.
Its more the offense melee evolution, its main charactersitic is being "nanomachines son" level strong.
>>
>>37802022

Grave isn't Tank, Grave is full-on Blood for the Blood God-tier.

That combined with our Ruby sub-evolution tree, the "First to battle, last to leave." one, Lyra is a god damn monster when aggressively fighting, she's built not to hold the line, but to get in the thick of it.
>>
>>37802071
That too in addition to tank. The skullbutt's actual purpose is armour, not a comfy bed.
>>
>>37802070
>All Lord-type evolutions are pronounced by horns and gems.
But regular Half-Lords/Lords only have a few gems in their carapace.
Arias horns are made of crystal and she got a Blessing by the Demi-God of Crystals. Her evolution is as "generic" to Half-Lord as Lyras Ruby Widow was to the Widow evolution. She isn't really anymore generic then Lyra, except for having not as many blessings.

>>

Having armor doesn't make it tank.
Its the "kill huge things"-evolution.
Having a indestructible spiderbut, just helps.
>>
>>37802107

Nah, the Skullbutt is to say "If it is too dark to see for you, this shall be the defining trait from which you draw your nightmares from."

It's mostly cosmetic I would say.
>>
>>37802070
She didn't get a scrub evolution.
We're just collecting Blessings like Pokemon or STDs
>>
>>37802071
You know I really think we should just start punching our enemies.
I mean, we have all this strong, we don't need the spear most times.
>>
>>37802149
REQM specifically stated that whatever kind of bone it's made of is damn near indestructible.
>>
>>37802177

We make it a habit of impaling people on our legs when they fall down.

We need to get better at Spearing things so Lyra can eventually become Lyrastein the Dragonfrillruffler.
>>
>>37802177
Thats what I've been saying all along.
The spear is just holding us back, when we could jus set our hands on fire and reinforce them with molten steel.
We can give the lightning gem to someone who actually needs it, like Nin.
>>
>>37802208

Punching things doesn't work when your front most legs extend several feet out in front of your torso.
>>
>>37802208
The spear is a reach weapon. So, you know. It holds bigger monsters back. That's the point.
>>
>>37802241
We would not be just Punching
We'd be FIRE-Punshing!
>>
>>37802267
we could just have our spear melt inside of an enemy and have the molten metal burn them from the inside out and then just reforge our spear after the battle.
>>
>>37802264
>So, you know. It holds bigger monsters back.
Why would we want that? That just means we can't feel their blood spill on our face!

I think Aria is going to beat us into the floor once the pastebin comes around. I have slightly mixed feelings on that one, her suddenly getting stronger than us would just be a little... disheartening I guess.
>>
>>37802409
We could have done it without spear too.
>>
>>37802425

Nah, she's still less skilled than Lyra in combat despite the fact that her entire evolution was based around being skilled in combat.
>>
>>37802428
Maybe, but definitely not the
> feel their blood spill on our face!
part
>>
>>37802425
Of course aria is going to beat us to the floor.

Raiden beats armstrong. It's like rock paper scissors.

Raiden beats armstrong beats sam beats raiden.
>>
>>37802425
We have higher combat skills then her, blessings likle crazy, our evolution gets greater stat bonuses and, if she turns herself into diamond, we can respond by melting her waepons and armor.
Pretty sure we still have an edge on her.
>>
Okay I gotta go. You guys do smart things.
>>
>>37802460
I thought it was fairly obvious that was a joke, especially considering with burning hand covered in molten steel, there wouldn't be much blood spilling to begin with.
>>
>>37802445
Her evolution is based around gems.
Its thing is to cover herself in gems.
And if she does that we can respond with our own magic.
>>
You turn back, brushing her hair from her eyes as she smiles sleepily at you.
"It has been a busy day, yes."
"Mmmno. I have been sleeping."

You smile a little wider.
"Well, It has been busy for some of us."
"Okay."
"I have something for you."

"For me?"
You offer the badge, the metal shining in the palm of your hand.
Jin squawks, all her feathers puffing up as tries to grasp it.
"Mine? This is mine?"

You grin again, shifting it so she can get her claws around it.
"It is a badge, yes. A mark of the guild."
"Why do you have a guild mark?"
"We went and got them today. So no matter where we go, we can find work and people to help us, yes."

Jin watches the badge closely, eyes glimmering.
"Anywhere? And this is mine?"
"That is yours, yes."

You take it from her, pinning it easily to her vest- It's getting a little small, though it certainly isn't worn out, despite what it's been through.
Your silk is definitely something special.

The harpy is in such a rush to pull free from the eye socket that she's tripping over her own feet, wings wide. You reach carefully beneath them, hoisting her up by her arms, but she wraps her wings around you, pulling close.
"Thank you, yes!"
"Mhm."

You can hear Ezzy starting to sneeze as you replace Jin.
Harpy hugs are ticklish.

"We were talking about where we wanted to go, yes?"
She nods.
"Is there anywhere you want to see?"
She steps side to side in the socket.
"I am happy with this, yes. And the stars."

The snake makes a confused sort of noise, and you smile at Jin.
"We thought we could take a caravan to the trade city, yes. And another to the elven lands."
She nods, not even giving it a moments thought.
"There is lots to see."

"Yes, yes."

It's going to start getting dark, soon.

"Lann?"
"Yes?"
"The, ah, leader?"
"Close enough."
"He said you had the week off, yes?"

She looks up at you.
"Why is it so ominous when you say it?"
Nin laughs.
"Well, would you like to come visit?"

"I was planning to relax, to be honest."
"I was thinking you could lounge around the nest, yes? And we could talk to Elle about making you some clothes."
"Ah. Hm. New clothes would definitely be nice. And arachne silk..."

She sniffs at her cloak gingerly, making a face.
"I can't help but feel I'm being played, here."
"Oh, you definitely are. Trapped in the queen's web-"
"Nin."
"Heeheheheh-"

"I guess I'll take you up on it."
"Good, good. I'll be running home from here, yes. And probably hunting something on the way back."
"This late?"
"Twilight hunting is good for the heart, yes."

"That's not a thing."
You shrug.
"Do you need to tell anyone where you are going?"
"It's fine. I'm on break, after all."
"Mhmm. Hop on, then. I'll be racing the stars, yes."

Jin cheers, spreading her wings and hopping free of her socket.
"Lyra!"
"Yes."

Her talons wrap around your wrist, and you send her into the cooling air above.
Lann steals her spot, treating your shell like a recliner.
"At times like these, I keep thinking that I should be yelling things to get you to go faster."
"Please do not treat me like a horse, yes."
"I wouldn't know how to ride you if you were a horse."
"It's more carrying, isn't it?"
"Maybe."

You leave town, waving your way past the guards and picking up speed down the road- You're going a bit fast to actual detect anything, but you've got a pair of reliable friends.

You keep your eyes flicking between wolf and harpy, following them as fast as you can manage while keeping quiet. It takes a bit longer than usual- You're probably scaring things away, after all.
But between the two of them, you've chased down some prey.

A large black wolf, fur crackling, snarls at you, the stench of ozone thick in the clearing.

This is actually really nostalgic, isn't it.

Sheszka and Jin spread out immediately, sending the wolf into a spinning conniption- Jaws snapping in every direction to fend them off.

You move to immediately shed your cargo- lightning isn't the sort of thing people survive, normally. Switching your spear from hand to hand, you help people to the ground, handing off Ezzy to Nin- The snake burrows into the poofy fur wrapped around her neck, and its hard not to laugh.

It's the wrong sort of situation to be laughing, but you crack a smile nonetheless.

There's a single, sharp bark as you turn around- A flare of light and the smell of ozone as the wolf unleashes its power, straight at you. You get your hand up, but not your power, ever nerve and muscle in your body firing off all at once in one big shiver.
Your hair feels staticky, sticking and floating all at once.
And you bent your bloody spear when your hand closed on it.

Thunder wolves, nothing but problems.

Lann is apparently yawning.
There is such a thing as taking a break too far, after all.
Then again, leaving this much to you isn't that much of a leap of logic- this is something you killed as a child, after all.

And you have even more help now.

You close in on the wolf, but to no avail- Jin darts in as a distraction, and the second the beast turns, Sheszka is on it.

She's on all fours, sticking low to the ground- One armoured fist snaps out, grabbing the creatures hind legs and wrenching it out from beneath it. The wolf is already twisting, ready to land on its feet and continue the fight.

Impressive instincts.

Unfortunately, Sheszka has been trained extensively by Mom.
Landing is something the wolf will never experience.

The creature manages to twist itself rightside up, coming down on all fours, but your were-wolf is already swinging, driving down from above with a ferocious punch. She catches the wolf across its spine, and you wince at the sound of shattering bone as she drives her hand down, nearly meeting the forest floor.

Lann walks up next to you as you stop, her arms tucked behind her head.

"Did she just punch a wolf in half?"
"I am fairly certain she did, yes."

Sheszka grins up at you, her smile proud as the sun continues its descent.

We'll cut it short here.
Next thread will be thursday, sometime near 230 PM EST!
As usual, comments questions and concerns will be answered in thread.

REQM Giant spider or no you really shouldn't be hunting wolves, they're endangered and I'm fairly sure you'd have trouble running this quest from jail.

Thanks for the thread mate

What's the chance Lyra will unlock a never-seen-before level 6 evolution?
>>

Do you know how big a bear we'd need to eat to do that?

That would be great. We could add 'steel-weaver' to Lyra's growing list of titles.

Is Lyra set to grow larger than her mother when she is finished growing in her current evolution?

Not endangered enough.

Sixth Tier evolutions are mythical- they aren't things people have seen before, for the most part.

>>37805341
It's a possibility!
On the other hand, Mom gets jealous, and tends to count her horns as part of her height!

It's true anon, look at how much trouble it is for REQM to simply access his computer.

There is a reason he takes as long as he does between posts, you know.

I agree. HUGE SPIDER has all sorts of problems.

We're already problematically large as it is.
