Ok, so news.

Lot to do today, so I'm going to try to keep to a 15 minute voting period between posts. Actual posts may have a longer interval, cos of the time it takes to write them, but if a vote comes in after the 15 minute mark, and I don't count it, sorry. If we don't manage to close out where I think we can, we'll run a Saturday thread. If we do, we might still run one as a different character. Maybe another Jess quest. those are fun.

++

You were up early- before you'd set your alarm even, and that was set to go off a half hour before anyone else's should. You'd showered and dressed, heading downstairs just as you heard movement start in the bedrooms, the twins and Merlin getting up, along with Slider and Ice.

You took the time to stick a pot of coffee on, waiting for it to brew enough to fill a mug, then headed out of the house as the showers kicked on upstairs again. It's a bit chilly out in the early morning air, and heavy with humidity, a very low-hanging mist just covering the ground. The base isn't blacked out, though you can see that the air defense network is up and manned- no surprises there, really. Those crews are probably on the last half of their watch.

The hangar is a different story. After showing your ID to the air force security troops outside, you go in through one of the people-sized doors along the front. The building's lit up, with your crews finishing the uploading of weapons and equipment to the wyverns.

“Morning, Chief.” You greet, walking over to your crew chief, who nods.

“Mornin, sir.” He says.

“Everything going alright?”

He nods. “Yessir, no problems. The load toads have all the weapons uploaded, and those witch pods or whatever the hell they're called staged, we can't load them till they're occupied, ya know?”

1/3
>>
“How the hell do those work, anyway?” You ask, indicating the cigar-shaped pod staged below your centerline bay.

“Pretty basic shit, sir.” He says, walking over, motioning for you to follow. “See? Just a basic pressure shell with some umbilicals for the strikers. They'll leech a bit of power from the fighter while you're in flight to keep everything warmed up, you shouldn't even notice. Plugs for intercom here, oxygen mask over there. We'll get the strikers in 'em pretty soon here, we're just taking a quick fiver.”

You nod, looking at the pod, noting the recesses for the strikers and what you imagine are the umbilical connections. “And that harness?” You ask, pointing to what looks like a parachute harness.

“Acceleration harness.” He says. “There's padding up around the headspace, too. Not a lot of room to work in there, and they've gotta lay on their back the whole ride, but if you've gotta do any turns or anything while they're loaded, don't want 'em getting a concussion. The striker units are pretty snug in those recesses, we're not worried about those sliding around any.”

“So what do I need to know about it?” You ask.

“Not much, sir. It's designed to not screw with your aerodynamics too much, so it shouldn't affect your fuel consumption. The deployment is butt-simple on your end- select group three, fire. The whole thing falls away, here, then splits along it's length here and here. Electrical charge, not explosive. Your rider activates her strikers and off she goes.”

2/3
>>
“What happens if it doesn't?” You ask, worried suddenly.

He shrugs. “Triple redundancy. If the cutting charges fail, there's a manual hatch release. Bottom half and top half separate, off she goes. If that's jammed or otherwise inop, there's a 'cute on the whole shebang and it'll float. Got a six day beacon in it, standard all channel bullshit, plus some survival gear and supplies in a compartment under the floor there.” He says, lifting it up to show you the survival rations and equipment- basic stuff, a knife, a compass, and a poncho, along with a couple pouches that are familiar from your own survival vest, first aid and the like.

You nod, satisfied.

“Reckon we've got enough time to change out any one thing ya want, sir.” He says, looking around the bay. “But not much else. Don't know if you're having second thoughts about your load, but if ya are, we can swap around something“

>>
>>37822019
The AIM-152 has a longer range than early AMRAAMS, but it's meant to take out heavy bombers while AMRAAMS are designed for a wide array of targets. Basically it a Phoenix 2.0.
>>
>>37822019
The AMRAAM have a medium range of about 30-40 miles while the AIM-152 have a range of somewhere above 115 miles. That being said it was intend to take on bombers.

[x] Fly as-is.

You shake your head. “We'll fly as-is.” You say, starting to walk around your fighter. It's not a 'real' walkaround, you don't pay the same level of attention to everything, but it's still nice to see no visible issues as you do so.

The chief nods. “Roger that, sir. We'll get the strikers over and uploaded here in a second.” He looks over as the ammunition and ordinance crew rolls up with two of the ammunition canisters for your guns and opens up the access hatch.

The chief jerks his head to the side and you both head away, giving them room to work. You both end up watching a crew pull the pods back out- you're not sure why they were staged already- to load the strikers in with the help of a forklift and the short crane used in here.

“They're not light, eh?” You say, helping guide one unit down into the pod and watching with interest as a member of the ground crew hooks up a pair of umbilical lines to it and sets one of the clamps.

The chief shakes his head. “Well, kinda, but not really. Bout a hundred, hundred fifty pounds. These are a bit heavier, but there's a limit. They're just damn awkward to have to move around with just manpower, ya know?”

You nod, catching Ice heading in out of the corner of your eye.

You nod at her and the chief salutes. She returns the salute, then looks at the pod. “So that's it, huh?” She asks.

“Yes ma'am, that's it. Once we get your strikers loaded up, it's ready to go. You've been briefed on it?”
The chief responds, and she nods.

“Yeah, but let's go over everything one more time, just to refresh my memory.” She says.

1/2
>>
You take the opportunity to head over to the life support shop, catching up on the forecast weather- there's a front moving through southern Greece, which you may have to divert around, but it's not expected to interfere with flight ops on Crete. Otherwise, the clouds are supposed to be scattered and light.

You meet up with Merlin and the twins, waiting for them before heading back to your fighter. You'll all miss morning chow, but there's some in-flight food waiting for you. Nothing fancy, as usual, but enough that you're not going to starve, at any rate.

You arrive back in the hangar just in time to catch Slider and Ice strapping on their gear as well. Ice wears her XM14 across her front, strapped tight to her chest, while Slider's shotguns dangle from loose slings to her side.

“I-I'll go start the preflights.” Merlin says, and you nod, watching her head over to the fighter.

“You two ready?” You ask the twins. They both nod.

“Just like usual, eh?” Alyssa says.

You snort. “Implying anything's ever usual.”

She laughs as well, the two of them walking off to do their own walkaround and preflights.

The boss and Slider split up, with Slider headed towards the twin's jet, and the boss towards you. She doesn't look worried, but glances at the pod once or twice.

[x] Don't worry, we'll be careful. Don't want to be too rough your first time.

You grin at her. “Don't worry.” You say, low enough that the nearby crew can't overhear. “We'll be careful. Don't want to be too rough your first time.”

She chokes for a second, the a look you rarely see on her comes over her face, and she looks back at you. “What if I want it rough?” She asks.

Well. You weren't expecting that.

She grins at the look on your face, and walks over to her pod, not another word said. You watch for a second as she sits down in it, then slides her legs into her strikers and gets help threading the harness through her rifle sling, to leave it available for action as soon as she's out.

You head up the ladder on the nose of your fighter after the lower the pod top on and seal the whole thing, getting in your ejection seat and getting your own harness buckled on before slipping on your helmet and plugging into intercom. “We all good on board?” You ask.

“Good here.” Merlin says, sounding happy. “Everything up to pre-start is done.”

You nod, though she can't see it. “Ok, hold off on the startup till we're towed out. How about you boss, how's it back there?”

“Dark.” She says, simply.

You laugh. “Not much to see yet anyway.”

You quickly tie on to the flight's tactical net, with the datalink going live just as an aircraft tug hooks up and you start moving with a bump.

“Ok, we won't have much radar coverage over Turkey.” Merlin says as a warning to the six of you. “Their systems aren't capable of datalink with us. There's AWACS on the Forestall down in the med that can, but I don't think we'll see them until we're feet wet again.”

“So we're blind except for ourselves.” Clarissa says, looking over- you see her helmeted head in the back of their fighter as it's towed out, her visor down.

“Yeah, but that's not so bad.” Merlin says. “We'll have to radiate, but it'll draw attention away from the jetliner.”

“Point.” Alyssa says from her place up front. “So how do we want to do this, oh glorious, sexy leader?”

“Does she know we can hear her?” Ice asks, still on intercom.

[] We'll interdict targets farther out, Ice and Slider can stick close and deal with any leakers.
[] Ice and Slider can roam a bit, we'll handle anything that gets close.

We'll need the witches close by to defeat any missiles that get through and engage in the smaller range, while the steelwings can spread out for maximum radar coverage.

[x] We'll interdict targets farther out, Ice and Slider can stick close and deal with any leakers.

“We'll separate a bit, try and interdict anything farther out. Ice and Slider can get closer in and handle any leakers.” You say, hearing the turbines start to come to life behind you.

“No problem.” Alyssa responds. “But it means we'll be too far out to be watching the boss' tight ass in flight-”

“I'm sure we'll have plenty else to do.” You say, quite quickly, looking out the side of the canopy and counting the red streamers held in the chief’s hand.

“I count twelve, one-two.” You say over the net and he nods, giving you a thumbs up and stepping back. You hear Alyssa echo you to their chief, though you're watching the crews duck in and remove the wheel blocks.

You begin rolling as soon as they're out of the way, the twins following behind you. The marshal directs you down a nearby taxiway and you roll onto the main runway, the lights on ahead of you. In the tower, ahead and to your right, you can see men moving, the brightly lit structure looking down on the flight line from several stories up.

You're quickly cleared and in the air, your afterburners lighting up the night sky with their distinct brand of thunder as you clear off the runway and turn right, adopting a southern heading.

The night sky up here is amazing, stars twinkling above you in their untold thousands. You're following an established air corridor to the south with IFF turned on- even so, you have to identify a few times for the night patrol fighters, though none of them come up to look you over.

The flight is quiet all the way south, with an RAF tanker meeting you over the Transylvanian alps, her fighter escort a pair of typhoons. While Romania is numbered among the allies, her air force, mostly equipped with F-20 tigersharks and a handful of F-16s, is small and losses haven't helped. The RAF is assisting them along their black sea coast, as well as with mission support like this.

You unhook with the small puff of jet fuel and rock your wings as you head off, banking away from the Victor and watching her escorts return the gesture.

“Feet wet” You announce a few minutes later, crossing the coast near Constanta. The city's lights shine against the night sky down there, sunrise still a few hours off. “You Ok back there, Ice?”

“I was trying to nap.” She says. “Where are we?”

“Just crossed the black sea coast, we're out over the water again.”

“Any sign of them?” She asks

“It's still about two hundred miles to the intercept point.” You respond. “And we're still around an hour till intercept, so they're still somewhere over the Ukraine.”

“It's in radar range.” Merlin says. “I could warm up the set and take a look, see if anything's out there.”

[x] Let's not radiate yet, the reds still have a fleet down there somewhere.

“Let's not radiate yet, Merlin.” You say, looking out over your right side for a second. “The reds still have a fleet down there somewhere.”

“Ok.” Merlin responds. “I'll keep an eye out for anything radiating then.”

You don't respond- you don't need to. Instead you look around, keeping your head moving, looking for anything that shouldn't be out there. The soviets have given the Romanians trouble along the coast and you're worried about the possibility of running across a warship or two, especially without air to ground weaponry of any note. You're just glad they don't have any of those monster Kirov class ships out here- they're all in the northern and pacific fleets, to the best of your knowledge.

“Frank?” Merlin calls a while later. You're about fifteen minutes out from intercept, and by bow you should be seeing the liner's navigation and running lights- though they'll be hard to pick out against the stars just yet. “There's something up there radiating. Two somethings, actually. I think they're migs.”

[x] Let's get a visual on them, first. I don't want to shoot down anything else defecting

“We'll end around for a visual.” You say, making a gentle turn to the left and watching the twins mirror it. “Keep an eye on them.”

“Can do.” Merlin responds.

“What's going on up there?” Ice asks.

“Merlin sees radiating bogies out there.” You say. “We're not turning our set on just now, but I don't think any defectors would be broadcasting where they were like that. We're going to go take a look though, just to be sure.”

“Ok.” Ice says. “I'll be ready when you need me.”

“I'll skip the joke.” You automatically respond, looking down at your airspeed indicator and making a wide, sweeping right turn. “We'll be coming up on them any second. Get ready.”

You see the running lights first- the red and green lights of the jumbo contrast with the blacked out shapes of two fighter, one ahead and off their port side, far enough away that if the jet liner attempts to make any moves, the pilot can evade. The other is above and behind, trailing by around a thousand yards, maybe a hair more.

“Yeah, I don't think they're friendly. Merlin, any luck getting the jumbo?” You ask, readying up guns.

“Nothing yet, they might not be broadcasting. I assumed you didn't want me trying until we got a good look at the other guys.” She says.

“No, good call.” You respond.

“How do you wanna play this, lead?” The Alyssa asks.

>I imagine them being more civilized then that though the witches might get grabby, like what Katya in france. and I think Ice or Slider did in barin
So who grabs what on Frank?

Ice hugs his left arm, Slider hugs his right arm, Katya drapes herself across his front and flaunts it?
>>
>>37826075
You are forgetting our adorable psychopaths.

They WILL drop a bitch, before moving Frank to a more "secure" location, far away from prying eyes.
>>
[x] Guns, don't want to risk the airliner eating any missile shrapnel.

You're torn between using your own guns, and dropping Ice and Slider and letting them handle it. Thinking, however, will take too long- they're beginning an eastward turn, and you need to make a move now, or lose this.

“Guns!” You call. “You take the leader, I've got the guy in trail!”

The Migs never even see what hits them. Alyssa takes hers in a bravura display of marksmanship, her tracers spearing through the center of the fighter as she arrows in, afterburner plumes lighting up the side of the jetliner as she passes within meters of it.

Your own target fares as poorly, 25mm cannon shells slamming into the fighter's back, snapping clean through it's center. The nose jerks towards you at the same time as the stricken fighter's exhaust. The tail half goes up in a fireball a second later, while you watch the canopy flip out and away, the pilot riding an ejection seat up and out.

You never even plugged in your 'burners, and so you're able to recover more easily, sweeping up to the port side of the jet and glancing over, seeing the captain and his copilot looking with wide eyes at your fighter.

“Got them! Patching them in.” Merlin says, a second later. You can see the captain's mouth moving.

“This is captain Aleksandr Pajari of Aeroflot. Am I speaking with the American?” He asks.

“Lieutenant Commander Bishop, US Navy.” You say. “Glad to see you, Captain.”

“Not as glad as I am to see you.” He responds in thickly accented English. “Those pilots were part of an air patrol over the black sea, they were sent to intercept us. They threatened to shoot us down if we didn't comply with their directions.”

1/2
>>
>>37826131
And Wendy grabs him from behind, terrified he might leave.
>>
“Won't be a problem anymore. How many passengers?” You ask.

“One hundred and sixty.” He says. “Plus myself and my crew.”

“Right. Well, you stay with us, we'll have you all on Mediterranean beaches in no time.” You say, trying to sound reassuring.

“Heads up, Frank.” Merlin says. “There's an air defense warning going out over the whole black sea. I've- wait.”

“Merlin?” You ask.

“There's a pair of radars down there. One top pair and one half plate. They're just search radars and they won't see us at this range, but-”

“They'll sure as hell see the jumbo.” You supply, then frown. “Wait, top pair? What the hell is that on here?”

“Probably a Slava-class.” She says.

“Slava slava slav- oh shit.”

“Yeah. The SA-N-6 that thing has is a navalised S-300.” She responds. “It's got a nintey mile engagement range, if we're anywhere inside it-”

“Yeah, and it's a witchkiller.” You say. “Ice and Slider can't stop it, can they?”

“I don't think so.” She answers. “But they're just in search right now, so they haven't seen us or pegged us as trouble.”

“We're still out of range.” You say, noting the tagged contact is still a hundred and twenty miles away. Not much breathing room, but enough. “Warn us if they go to fire control, but we're going to divert away from them.”

“Can do.” She responds. “If we divert, we should be ok, we're a lot faster than they are. And we haven't radiated, so they didn't see us.”

“Yeah, but how much you want to bet those Migs called it in?” You ask, nodding at the twin's choice of positioning- above and to the left of the jetliner.

“They didn't get any outgoing transmissions.” She says. “But it won't matter if the slava down there doesn't see them. They'll assume something happened anyway and phone it in.”

“Right. How long till Turkey?”

“A little under an hour at this speed. But Frank, the Turks might not be able to help much, they're pressed hard in the northeast.”

“Yeah, but I'd rather be over friendly territory than not.” You say. “Keep an eye out.”

“Want radar?”

“What about the Slava?”

“What are they going to do they haven't already?” she asks. “Besides, they already know something happened to their interceptors. Maybe if they know it's us, they'll hesitate?”

It's a possibility, given your reputation. Then again, it does advertise that you're here and expecting trouble, which could backfire on you.

[x] Yeah, turn it on. We need to see them coming more than anything else.

“Yeah, warm us up.” You say, watching the radar picture appear in front of you on an MFD.

“Nothing so far.” Merlin says. “Other than the two ships down there.”

“Hope it stays that way.” You respond, looking around at the sky, which is gradually starting to lighten up as the sun rises.

You can see land when Merlin and Clarissa both call out contacts. “Bogies!” Merlin calls, her intercom overriding Clarissa's tacnet call. “I count eight, repeat eight aircraft on radar. Size makes them out to be more Mig-23s, they're still out of range.”

“How soon will they be in range?” You ask.

“If we turn to engage, less than five minutes if they hold that speed and heading. If we continue now, and only engage when they're in range, about seven minutes.”

“We'll still be over the ocean either way, then.”

“Yes.”

[] Alright, let's drop the witches and turn and burn.
[] We'll engage, but let's let Ice and Slider ride a bit longer.

“Alright boss, time to earn your combat pay.” You warn, selecting weapons group 3- labeled on your MFD as POD and hitting the release.

You can't see Ice drop, but you watch Slider's pod as it's kicked free of the twin's jet a second later. The sleek shape drops into the slipsteream and bites, orienting down before it splits into quarters, the shell peeling away. Slider rolls her head around and re-orients herself, her striker's wings rotating forward and down into their flight position as their jets cycle up. She turns the free dive into a zoom climb, rocketing up above you before settling back down above the jetliner's cockpit. Ice joins her a second later.

“Flashy.” You remark, somewhat drily.

“Do you know how boring that was with these two up there trying to out-lewd the other?” Slider asks. “Next time Ice rides with them.”

“But Slidey!”

“And I swear to god next time you call me that I will kill you and do unspeakable things to your corpse.” She warns.

“The migs behind us just went active.” Merlin warns. “They're tracking the liner, they've issued warnings.”

“My American friend, we appear to have guests.” Captain Pajari warns, less than a second later. “They have demanded we reduce speed and turn around. I am telling them we are having major mechanical issues, but I do not think they will believe me long.”

His worry is borne out a second later. “Missiles!” Merlin warns. “The lead aircraft has launched a pair of them!”

“I've got them.” Slider says, sounding almost bored. “You wanna deal with the rest of those guys?”

[x] We've got them. You just take care of the Jumbo.

“We've got 'em, you just take care of the Jumbo.” You say, looping over the top in an Immelmann turn and spinning to face your attackers.

“Byeeee Slidey!” One of the twins- you can't identify who- coos over the net, mirrioring your move and forming up.

“She's going to kill you for that, you know.” You say.

“Worth it.” Alyssa says. “Besides, now you know what to call her!”

“You're assuming I'm stupid enough to.” You say.

“We've been painted!” Merlin warns, cutting the banter short. You were done talking anyway, you think. “It's not the Floggers! Foxhounds! The floggers are breaking, Foxhounds- Foxhounds are splitting!”

“Shit, how many?” You ask, looking around- you don't see any additional fighters, but the sky is light enough, just barely, to watch the migs in front of you scatter away.

1/2
>>
“Seven.” Merlin responds. “Four are vectoring towards us, the other three towards the liner. The liner is feet dry, they diverted south to get over land.”

It leaves you in a bit of a quandary. With AMRAAMS, you can knock down the floggers no problem, you probably won't have to use more than six missiles each to handle them, though that will leave you without a lot of long range firepower against the foxhounds, which are no doubt packing long range missiles of their own. But, it would let you turn to engage them sooner, perhaps forcing them to break away.

On the other hand, getting in a furball with the migs in front of you right now will save your AMRAAMS, and it'll limit the Foxhound's pilot's ability to launch on you, but it leaves the Slider and Ice to deal with the big fighters by themselves. While you're sure they can do it, you're not sure how that will leave them for landing at Crete.

[] Knock out the floggers now. Those foxhound are well beyond range, and even if Merlin juices the missiles, they can't hit them yet.
[] Engage those floggers in close. We've got to get those foxhounds to come in closer so we can shoot them.
