You are Reinhold Eschenwald, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Having finished with your business with Niklaus (and learned Inaba and Carina's ages), you and the others are in the midst of aimlessly wandering through the hallways of the castle.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

While the girls chatter on, you notice Marius looking at his new bracelet.

"Something wrong with it?" you ask.
"Hm?" Marius turns to you. "Nah, just wondering about this thing. Will it always look like this?" he says, holding up his wrist in order to show what looks like a sand-covered piece of metal on his wrist.
"No," you shake your hand, "mine looked pretty normal after a day or so. I think that's when you'll be able to start moving it around with your mind."

Just to show off a little bit, you will the one on your own wrist to sprout a tendril and coil it around your finger.

"Karel's even better with hers than I am," you say, returning it to its original shape.
"Huh, you don't say," Marius nods. "Well I guess I ought to get in some practice with this thing before I'm completely outpaced by the rest of you," he laughs.

You guess that's his pride as an artist talking there.

To be honest, I mostly just miss talking to her. Also, if she has anything planned that's way out of line for discussion of a first date it may be wise to talk to her (I'd doubt it though, she's been sensible enough to leave things be with us and Luci).

Now that I think about it, thinking of a human as an animal probably has different implications in this world, precisely because of that ascension thing.

The basis for Reya/Inaba was this post. Reading it again, it probably has more to do with Agnes visiting, but it was left a little ambiguous. It transpired shortly after Elena was telling Emilio and Karel to get married so she'd have another non jerk sibling and at least some people thought she wanted to marry off her rabbit so Reya (and Rana) could be her siblings. Honestly, even if she didn't have that design, I could see Elena thinking that was a great idea.

Despite their dislike of his wife, the nobles actually like Marius.

Not to mention that nobody's about to get caught harassing a known friend of the King. Celestino's been known to strip noble titles from people who piss him off badly enough.

Together, both Carina and Elena race towards Agnes as she, Citrine and Sir Gregory exit the room that they were just in. It seems that Inaba gets the idea shortly afterwards, joining the two girls as they run.

"Hello again!" Agnes says, waving to the little girls as they approach. "You're all done with your business with the Archmage?"
"Uh-huh!" Elena nods.
"Marius got a bracelet that's sposta do stuff like Reinhold's sword," Carina says, pointing at her new brother. "And I found out that I'm seven!"
"And I eleven," Inaba points to herself.

How about the King/Queen of Perricone?
'Cause Millien is due the stripping of a few titles and a considerable amount of flesh.
>>
So, if all it takes for a rabbit to ascend is eleven years of affection, why doesn't a country create an ascension mill? Could see a place with like hundreds of little girls, each given their own rabbit (the special breed), and told to look after them. Once a wabbit ascends the little girl is given a new one and the ascended rabbit brainfucked with magick and enlisted into the army.

Nothing could go wrong, right?
>>
>>37831691
Have Reinhold just challenge everyone to duels. After the fight with Monique, they'd void themselves at the thought and shut up. (Even if Reinhold didn't technically win, he showed a willingness for mutually assured destruction in the face of death against a sealed king - and that was just for sport. You don't poke the crazy master swordsmen.)
>>
>>37831846
That's pretty hilarious and a good idea.
>>
>>37831822
Did you not read when Marianne talked about why she wasn't going to tell anyone of those events, or have you forgotten?
>>
>>37831842
The affection isn't necessary. It's Inaba having enough magical energy to surpass that of a rabbit. Because she can't be a rabbit, she becomes human.

Or something along those lines.

Any bad mouthing would likely have to be done discretely.

Reinhold has a very specific procedure to deal with people who go after his family. A few duels would do it. They already know Reinhold is a bit crazy.

I think there is a reason that Sir Gregory likes Reinhold. Probably because under his general niceness, Gregory recognized a kindred soul.
>>
>>37831962
Rough archelon quote here.

>Reinhold never hated any of the people he killed. They just hurt Citrine, and they had to not live any more.
>>
>>37831962
Rein's been confirmed as Greg 2.0 long ago.
It's one of the reason's he wanted us to get together with Nico Which is sort of creepy when you think about it but makes perfect sense
>>
>>37831962
Except that killing people in duel in front of everyone turns you into an assassin honeypot.
>>
>>37831998
Not really, it's honestly pretty normal.
>>
>>37831998
Greg likes us because his daughter likes us, so he tried to set us up with her. I think.
>>
>>37832042
I think that's more like it.
>>
>>37832001
Nobody says they have to die anon. With healing magic being so well magical they could easily lose a limb or two and still be fine.
>>
>>37831805

"Oh, so that's how old you are!" Agnes laughs. "Seven years old..."
"Uh-huh," Elena nods. "Mr. Niklaus said that she just turned seven."
"Niklaus did?" Sir Gregory looks surprised. "Huh, I'm surprised that he'd bother..."

Then he turns to Inaba.

"He didn't do anything strange to you, did he?" Sir Gregory asks the bunnygirl. "Because if he did..."
"He didn't experiment on her," you say, having walked over to them while they were talking. "Just collected some information."
"Oh, okay," he breathes a sigh of relief.

>[2/?]
>>
>>37831993
I'd like to think he's got a bit better control over it now. Not to mention he doesn't care what happens to himself, just those close to him.

When given an opportunity to confront Spinelle he showed wisdom in backing off before he did something he regretted (In his state of mind he was liable to murder or assault an unarmed civilian - something that would've surely made him even more broken up about his childhood).

He also showed mercy to the SuperBonusRoute Dark child girl, although that may have been out of necessity.
>>
Also, Rein's the first person to get swordie lessons from Arnaud since Greg, so there's that.
>>
>>37832060
Why would we want them around plotting their revenge and recruiting new allies? Do you even noble?
>>
>>37832105
Because then we have a perfectly justified reason to murderize the shit outta them without the worry of getting on major shitlists for murdering somebody during a duel.
>>
>>37832071
>Gregory already treating Inaba like precious family

Dawwww
>>
>>37832146

>>
>>37832145
What I'm saying is that anything we do overtly - publicly - is going to cause a backlash. We should take a hint from Luciana and hit them when no one else is looking or find a way of blackmailing/threatening them into serving to protect our family above their own. That's my opinion anyway.

>>
>>37832213
Or we could relax a little and consider that shitheads are less likely to be a threat to Citrine now that she's out of Cateno.

For our other friends their security is first and foremost a concern for the Kings and co so any decision about it preferably has to involve them.

"So you got that bracelet that Reinhold was talking about?" Citrine asks her husband.
"Yup," Marius nods. "It'll take a few days for it to be able to do all the cool things that Reinhold's can, though," he says. "What about you guys, did you find out what you were wondering?"
"Yes," Agnes nods. "Gregory was quite forthcoming, and I'm very grateful about that."

Sir Gregory simply laughs nervously in response.

You can't just say "WAT DID U SAY? FITE ME IRL" every time someone does something you don't like, or you'll look like an idiot. (See: chat in multiplayer video games, drunk dudes, gorilla warfare copypasta, etc.)

Seriousing the fuck up and insisting on it if someone steps way out of line is definitely fine, but you don't want to wear it out being the boy who cried duel every time there's a minor slight, or people'll co-opt it as grounds for more shit-talking.
>>
>>37832450
You know, I'd completely forgotten Val was with us. Then again, she's probably still mad at us so I'm not surprised she isn't paying much attention to Rein.
>>
>>37832463
In this kind of society, a public insult about one's family is serious business. This is not internet games. And people would probably not co-opt it either because you can actually get hurt. Reinhold is not a guy claiming to have nine black belts online.
>>
>>37832463
I expect we'd only have to do it once or twice before the nobles learn better.
>>
>>37832511
The point isn't that it should never be done, it's that it should be done judiciously. If people start to see that your standard response to any slight is to demand satisfaction it'll lose its impact.
>>
>>37832548
We aren't that good yet. Hell, Monique could probably still beat us with that sealed king. I don't know why you'd expect to win when the nobles could hire professional duelists to stand in as their proxies.
>>
>>37832550
See >>37832548
Unless they are suicidal lemmings, after the first big idiot the rest will stop. And it probably would take a pretty big idiot if Reinhold simply asked if he had a problem for reasons stated previously.
>>
>>37832595
>I don't know why you'd expect to win when the nobles could hire professional duelists to stand in as their proxies.
It took a sealed king to top us, and that's before we had Tinablade. I'd like to see how much a noble would have to spend, and how hard they would have to search, to find someone of that level.
>>
>>37832605
Actually if enough people lost to him it would become a sort of contest. Many challenging him to see if they could best him for national/international recognition.

Idiots constantly talking shit hoping to attain some sort of title as a superior duelist.
>>
>>37832595
Reinhold did win a tournament based solely on weapon skill, survived against a sealed king with a mundane sword, fought against a bunch of half dragon assassins, and killed leviathans.

I think you are confusing people like Gregory with normal professional who can be hired. There are people who could easily defeat Reinhold, but I doubt Count Buttpawer, who can't really think of anything to do but insult someone for adopting orphans, is going to be in a position to hire them.
>>
>>37832605
That "first big idiot" doesn't need to happen. We can afford to brush off pretty much any shithead in the country, we're going to be a fucking Prince.

And "ignore the assholes" is already Reinhold's policy, more or less.
>>
>>37832494
Her being mad at Rein is fine, but her being jealous of Carina/Inaba because of attention they're getting from Elena helps nobody if it means Agnes Senpai doesn't notice her.
>>
>>37832664
There's a difference in sporting challenges though (which are fine) and insulting a guy's grandma and little sister when said guy essentially was willing to fight to the death over a broken sword. Reinhold has a thin veneer of civilization over a large number of triggers that make him extremely violent. The Monique fight probably made that abundantly clear. Sane individuals just do not behave that way.
>>
"What -were- you guys talking about, anyways?" you ask.
"Well..." Citrine glances at Elena.
"Alright, ladies!" Marius calls out. "Who wants a picture drawn by yours truly?" he says as he produces a sketchbook and pencil. "All requests are welcome, maybe you'd like one of you and your rabbit friend together?"

He really is a master of reading the situation.

"Ooh!" Racquel shouts. "Could you draw a-"

Of course Valerie hits her.

You are imposing too many 20th century values on this. The way things work in these sorts of settings is that you duel over insults. If Reinhold is being played according to character, he should be even worse really. He punched Monique out for insulting someone's mother who (at the time) he barely even knew.

>>
>>37832844
He punched Monique so that Nicolette wouldn't have to do it herself.

And 20th century values or not, solving the problem of a jerk being a jerk peacefully is still the least complicated solution, considering how the nobility won't like us very much and a good chunk of them will interpret any violent outburst as proof that we're an uncouth brute.
>>
>>37832916

"Back to the subject at hand," Agnes says, "Gregory was telling me about the situation back home."
"Ah, that," Marianne nods. "It hasn't gotten any worse since yesterday, has it?"
"Depends on who you ask," he replies. "We just got a letter from Celestino and he's absolutely PISSED about what happened out by the lake..."

He sent his kids out here to be safe and they ended up being put in mortal danger, after all.

You narrow your eyes.

"...he's NOT about to go to war, right?" you ask.
"Yesterday, Father was saying that he was merely on high alert," Marianne joins in. "surely things haven't degenerated that much over a single day..."
"I doubt he'll rush in just yet," he replies. "I've seen things get like this before, he'll get all riled up and then things calm down over time."
"I certainly hope so," Agnes replies with a tired sigh. "A war is the last thing that anyone needs."

"I agree," Sir Gregory says, shaking his head. "But Luciana worries about that constantly so I -really- want you to keep from saying anything to her about this. That goes for both of you."
"I'll have you know that Luciana and I refrain from talking to each other about political matters," Marianne replies, glaring at him. "It's nothing but unnecessary stress."

You'd almost forgotten about Marianne and Sir Gregory's little feud for a minute there.

"Well thanks for that," Sir Gregory replies, returning her glare. "...Reinhold?"
"Uh..." you look around, "I don't plan on worrying her with that kind of news, but you do know that she always has her ear to the ground for information about what's happening back in Marconetti, right?"

While you're not about to give up the fact that she has spies running around funnelling information to her, you'd also like to remind Sir Gregory of his niece's resourcefulness.

She's actually quite the fine swordsman, maybe even just as good as your son here.

Maybe we can demonstrate for you later on today with a lighthearted duel? She did win the Tournament in Marconetti to become Emilio's bodyguard after all.

(we can also test out our sword to see what happens when it gets into contact with a magical sword like her flamberge).

And who knows? Maybe you could give us both a few tips (also mention Grandma's sword is in your room).

we don't need to keep challenging people to duels, dude. We are quite capable of playing her skills up without the need to test them ourselves. >>
>>37834781
>don't tease the karel

True, then also mention how she defended Emilio by killing a fucking dragon and play up her role in the attacks on the Marconetti line.

Also, since we killed a dragon, when's our knighthood coming? I remember something a few threads back saying that whenever you kill a dragon you get knighted.

>thout the need to test them ourselves. The fact that she managed to win the tournament and survive all the half drac ASSassins goes to show that, since she didn't into magic at the time. Why not just say it?

Because there is a difference between saying and showing, plus we have a severe lack of opponents who we can test our skills against (since arnaud has been training us at least, and nobody wants to duel us), a duel would be fun and help us become friendlier with Karel, and we can see what happens when our sword gets into contact with a magical sword.

I'm using this as a base for the next time we fight Monique. I am assuming that our sword would draw the magical energy away from another sword whenever it gets into contact with it, since it has a crystalline base. I want to test my theory and see if it's true.

With the way that she's blushing and fidgeting nervously like this, Karel is a perfect target for your urge to tease someone... but she's already at wit's end as it is and you don't want to make things worse for her.

Maybe some other time.

"So Gregory tells me that you and Emilio are heading out on a -date-?" Agnes asks with a grin not unlike what you've grown used to seeing from Luciana.

"Try to go easy on her," you say to Agnes while resting a hand on Karel's shoulder.

"...I do?" Emilio stares at her. "How?"
"I'm not seeing it either," Marianne remarks.
"You wouldn't be able to tell now since he's all grizzled and old," Agnes says, "but back in his younger days, Celestino looked a lot like Emilio here," she points to the Prince. "Not that he looked like what at any point during -my- lifetime, of course... I've only heard that secondhand from Guillaume way back when."

For some reason, Karel's blushing harder now than she had been.

He was feeling weird about the sudden revelation as it was, and having it slammed in his fate that she is a pretty girl who also DEFINITELY likes him in a romantic way has definitely helped rush things along in that area.
The external pressure has only served to make things even more awkward.

He will be angry about reverse traps, yes.
But the fact that she's outright saved his life on the lake and helped to do so back when the assassins attacks will certainly help her win his favor, and her parentage won't hurt any either.

I think Citrine had it pretty fucking bad but we don't get to see just how much it fucked her up.
>>
>>37835654
She was messed up pretty bad, too. It's gotten better because her life is in order now and she's a naturally cheerful person. Reinhold could get better too, with time.

Also Reinhold was younger and the person doing the raping was the closest thing he ever got to a mother figure. Plus Citrine got into prostitution because everyone around her was desperatly poor. Reinhold got raped and it continued because nobody but Citrine gave a shit. That leaves an impression on what to expect from people.
