Part two for the night. Hopefully we don't need a part three, ahaha!

Original thread here, while it lasts
>>37821838

++

[x] Knock out the floggers now. Those foxhound are well beyond range, and even if Merlin juices the missiles, they can't hit them yet.

The floggers are your immediate target- they're in closer, and while they're older, slower, and overall less threatening than the foxhounds, you still can't ignore them.

They've broken up into wing pairs, but they're too far out and they know it- their AA-7s unable to draw lock as the Wyvern's radar starts flashing up targets- the datalink means that you and the twins don't fire on the same targets as AMRAAM solutions begin appearing.

“Let's take these guys down quick, we've got to get on those foxhounds!” You call, selecting group two- programmed in as the AMRAAMs- and hitting the trigger.

Four of the deadly missiles enter the slipstream from your fighter, a split second behind the four launched from the twin's jet.

The migs break away, attempting to defeat the missile shots with chaff, and, as they close, extreme break turns. It's ineffective- you can see the explosions from here. Being old fighters, they never really stood much of a chance- simple fact was they were so far outclassed they might as well have not come up. You turn into the foxhounds a second later, just as they begin launching their own missiles.

“Missiles in the air! We're being locked by two radars, eight missiles.” Merlin warns. “Missiles look like they're AA-9s, at this range. Jamming's up, thirty seconds to impact.”

“Are they still closing?” You ask.

“Yeah. Still tracking, four for us, three for the jumbo. Those three haven't launched yet.”

“How soon will we be in range?”

“One minute, unless they turn away. But they can't, those AA-9s are semi active, they've got to stay locked on us.”

“TALDs?” You ask, referring to your chaff and flare replacements, the tactical air launched decoys.

“If they're locked on it won't matter.” Merlin responds. “Twenty seconds. If you wait until about five seconds and break, I can dump them out. It might spoof a couple missiles, otherwise you'll have to out turn them. They're like our old phoenixes, they're designed to kill bombers, they can't turn.”

[x] Save the decoys, we can just out turn them.

“Save the decoys then.” You say. “Let me know when it's three seconds to impact.”

It's a tense couple of seconds after the ten second warning- they seem to last forever. You can actually see the missiles in the air now, a little black dot surrounded by a halo of fire, the glare from it's rocket motor. “Three!” She cries- then you can her grunt as the air is forced out of her lungs by her harness slamming into her chest as you push the stick all the way forward and kick in full right rudder.

Your fighter slams almost to a forward stop, converting it's energy instantly into a screaming, curving dive- one that wouldn't be possible without thrust vectoring. “We're still locked!” Merlin warns. “Missiles have lost track!”

You respond by immediately pulling the stick back and kicking in left rudder, flipping the fighter from a dive into a brutal climb, one that smashes you back into your seat. “AMRAAMs in range!” She calls- then a second later, as you're waiting for a solution “They've launched again! More missiles, in the air!”

A second later she calls up again. “They're breaking away! We're still painted, they're active missiles!”

[x] Let these Foxhounds go, go evasive and use decoys to defeat them, engage those other Migs!

You break away, pumping TALDs into the air behind you as you turn to engage the three migs heading for the airliner.

“They're launching!” Merlin warns as you look back over your shoulder to see the twins linking back up with you, the missiles aimed at them similarly defeated and sailing on into the distance.

You kick in the burners to try to get in range- the fight dragged you a bit away from the airliner- but it proves to be unnecessary as the Foxhounds turn and run, their missiles expended. You arrive in time to watch Ice and Slider swat them out of the sky, the last couple coming close enough that the girls are forced to take them on the shield instead of shoot them down.

“Nice to see you again, Warhound.” Ice says, looking back at you before returning to her spot above and ahead of the jetliner. “You get them?”

“The floggers. Those foxhounds got away.” You respond.

“Good enough. We're deep inside turkish airspace anyway.” She says. “Those-” she pauses. “Those missiles have new warheads. That took a lot out of us.” She continues after a second. “Do us a favor, don't let too much else through.”

“I don't think they're going to mess with us much from here.” You say, “Merlin, how are we lookin?”

“Scope's clear.” She says. “We're good on fuel, too.”

“You going to need to divert, boss?” You ask. “The Forrestal can take you aboard.”

There's a distinct pause before she responds. “No, we can make the airport as long as we don't have to take any more hits.”

Over Turkey and feet wet again into the Mediterranean, your radar stays clear. The CAP of the Forrestal meets you briefly, the flashing their running lights at you before breaking away to resume their patrol over the battlegroup.

Before long, the scattered islands give way to Crete, and Chania airport, your destination. Home, at least temporarily, of several air transportation wings, using the southern route across the Atlantic and on into southern Europe, it also plays host to a B-1B group and several other units, and is heavily defended.

“Ok, Ice, slider, you two set down right behind the Jumbo, then we'll land.” You order.

“We're fine up here, how about we orbit with you, then land after they're safely down?” Ice asks.

[x] Fine, do that. Guess it won't hurt.

You hesitate, then nod. “Fine, do that. Won't hurt to have an extra set of eyes up here, especially now.”

It seems to take forever as the jumbo lines up on the runway and makes it's approach- it comes as a huge sigh of relief when the wheels finally kiss the pavement. As it starts to taxi, joined on the ground, now, by security forces vehicles, you look back over your shoulder. “Ok, your turn bo-”

“BREAKBREAKBREAK!” Merlin screams- you instantly throw the Wyvern into a break as something punches through the air space you just occupied.

“I'm hit! I'm hit!” Alyssa cries- you look back over your shoulder to see her wyvern stalling out, it's aft port quarter gone, the area around it a mangled mess.

Two Fandances, one painted a three tone scheme, the other jet black go screaming across the sky above you. Ice's fire pings harmlessly off a shield as they twist away.

“It's coming apart! I can't control it!” Alyssa cries.

“Get out! Get outta that jet!” You order, turning to engage. “Lock those bastards up, Merlin!”

“I'm trying!” She calls. “Laser range finding is the only thing working!”

You're about to respond when the three tone ship vomits a cascade of missiles into the sky, just as you watch Clarissa ride her ejection seat up and out of her broken bird, Alyssa following her a second later.

“Frank, Multiple locks on us!” Merlin warns, her voice excited as you hammer the wyvern into a break and practically break the TALD dispenser trigger. “TALDs are working!”

“What the hell was that?” You ask, watching the two fandances break apart, the black one continuing away, the three tone fighter coming in to mix it up.

“EML, I think. I saw the discharge pulse on tesla.” She says.

They are tired after a long flight, their shields cannot take another hit after absorbing the missiles aimed at the Jumbo. We saw that their weapons couldn't break through the shield. Maybe after long enough, but these two can't currently deal with these threats.

It would be reckless (okay less reckless) to get them grounded.

Real-world ones may not, but that doesn't preclude SWQ-verse Typhoons from being submersible carriers. especially as the Fandance is specifically capable of being launched and recovered by Typhoon submersible carriers.

And you're forgetting the existence of Stealth Witches, which can have their magic amplified by being connected to a plane's powerplant.
Just like how the Twins and Merlin can't manifest a shield with a regular Striker but they can create shields for their planes when they're connected to a plane's Striker interface.

You're ignoring a whole slew of in-world technology and you're just making yourself look ignorant.

[x] Ice, Slider, I want you on the ground. Now.
“Ice. Slider. I want you two on the ground. Now.” You say with a calm you don't feel.

“Frank we-” Ice starts to protest.

“NOW.” You order.

You see her falter in the air- then make tracks for the airfield.

“Frank I can't get a radar return on them!” Merlin calls. “The tan one's coming around, I lost the black one!”

“What happened to the rest of those mini missiles?” You ask.

“Airfield guns got most of them, some damage on the ground.” She says.

You turn into the attack, the tricolor Fandance breaking away from you. You're almost taken by surprise- instead of breaking into your attack it snaps away from you- a basic mistake, almost rookie shit. Still, it snapped into it's new heading almost effortlessly.

You're fortunate Agiles are IR guided- or at least, carry an IR seeker head. You quickly pump two of them into the air after the Fandance, watching them acquire. The Fandance drops countermeasures, then begins to turn- far too early- in an attempt to defeat the missiles.

“Frank! Three o clock! He's gonna fire, he's gonna fire!” Merlin cries, forcing you to break off your pursuit of the three color fandance as the black one sends another railgun slug screaming through the air at you- it misses, and you come enough to look up and snap another agile at it, using your helmet display.

1/2
>>
>>37831899
Yes, you are.
Because you're ignoring Witch capabilities to be undetectable to tech (something that Ice mentioned at Barin, and that Merlin's development of magic sensors was a monumental breakthrough), that the Russians (instead of the Imperial Japanese, oddly enough) are obsessed with submersible carriers and that the Fandance can be carrier launched (which they must have been because the Fandance has a short operational range).
And once again, magic. Magic is a fucking reality in this world, seeing as that's what won the Martian War.
>>
“Got them!” Merlin calls. “These two have been active against the TAF for a while! Tan one is nicknamed the jackal, the black one is the raven! This is the first time they've been seen together before!”

“Great. So at least they're not usually a pair.” you grunt, standing the wyvern on it's right wing and spinning away from an attack by the Jackal. “Any other data?”

“Nothing!” She says. “the Turks have a high bounty on them though.”

“I can see why!”

“Missile lock! Missile lock!” Merlin cries as the jackal fires that hail of mini missiles again.

It hurts, physically, to outfly them all. Both the G forces and something new.

“Warhound, warhound, how copy?” You hear, suddenly over the local net.

“Little busy tower.” You respond- only people that talk like that are tower guys and grunts. You wonder which this is.

“Warhound, I got someone wants to talk to you.”

[x] If it'll help me beat this thing, I'm all ears!

You turn away from another attack, spoiling a shot the raven was trying to line up on you.

“If it'll help me beat this thing, I'm all ears!” You call.

You can hear Alyssa in the background, talking to someone. Finally, a new voice comes over the radio.

His English is heavily accented and he sounds hesitant at best. “U-um, hello? Is this the Demon?”

“Among many other names.” You say, somewhat tersely. “Little busy up here.”

“A-ah, right! I am sorry. My english is, how you say, not so good.”

You break away from a gun run to yank your fighter into the vertical, spinning it around it's axis using the 3d thrust vectoring and slipping under the jackal as it screams overhead, kicking an agile loose at it.

“The pilots of those machines, they are not so skilled.” He says. “They are very young, and-”

“Not so skilled my ass!” You cry, diving away and kicking into an aileron roll.

“They are equipped with vehicular direct neural interface.” He says. “It makes controling their aircraft as simple as breathing for them.” He says. “But there is another thing. They are witches. The both of them are poorly trained, they were rushed into service when-”

“When you lost white butterfly?” You say, suddenly chopping your throttle to nil and popping your airbrakes wide open, slamming against your harness and watching the jackal, who was trying to slot in, go shooting past.

>>
“Yes.” he says, his voice becoming... unstable. “They are like her, they do not deserve to die. They are not knowing what they do!”

“That doesn't help me at all.” You point out, placidly. You don't feel placid, but you manage to come across as calm. You shoulda been an actor.

“They are young an inexperienced.” He says. “They have relied on their technology until now. You are a better pilot by far and your equipment is better.”

“So you called me to tell me they don't deserve to die and that I can beat them.” You ask. “Well, gee, thanks for the moral dilemma, but-”

“If you can get onto their radio channels and I can talk to them, I believe they will land.” He says.

“Merlin, how long would you need?” You ask, diving away from the two of them breifly, before zooming up and over the top.

“Sixty seconds. Less if you get in tight. They're communicating.” She says. A minute- it's doable, but damn is it going to hurt to do.

[x] Done deal, doc.

You sigh internally. Externally you can't- you're inhaling against a ribcage that feels way, way too tight against your lungs. “Done deal, doc.” You say. “Sixty seconds.”

“Get in close, Frank.” Merlin directs. “They've got a tightbeam communications link, the closer you can get, the faster I can do this.”

You slot in on Jackal, closing to well inside gun range, trusting that an unskilled kid isn't going to buy into the concept of a warrior's death and pop her speedbrakes in your face, causing a collision.

Her control over the aircraft is damned impressive- You're struggling, even now, to match her turn for turn. You're keeping an eye out for Raven, too, who you expect to attempt another of her slashing, hit-and-run attacks.

You're hoping she does.

Merlin's head is under the hood- she's struggling to get your radio, ECM suite, and her talent to let her do what she wants. You'd have missed the Raven had it not been for the colision alarm screaming in your ears. You react by instinct, rolling the wyvern inverted and slewing onto a new heading.

>>
>>37833250
Don't forget the hip and dick upgrades.

We want them both to survive the coming storm.
>>
“Hey Sam.” You say, chuckling to yourself and feeling something start to pool around your nose in your mask. “How close did you need to be.”

“As close as you can get.”

“How's two meters?” You ask. You're inverted, underneath Raven, matching her practically by feel- you don't have the luxury of VDNI, this is all talent and skill.

Merlin is unimpressed. “Close enough.” She says.

You peel away from Raven as the Jackal comes in on a run, loosing a pair of missiles at you- standard AA-11s, your last TALDs defeat them easily in combination with your turn.

“We're in!” Merlin beams. “Doctor? We're in.”

he doesn't thank you, but you note the two fighters roll wings-level and stop maneuvering. At least they're listening. You're almost surprised when they turn out to sea and adopt a steep, but workable, glide path.

“It worked.” You say, astonished.

You set down right behind them, curiously not feeling too drained. Tired, yes, hungry and sore, but not that dead tiredness that seemed to have soaked into your bones after Berlin, or after your clash with the headhunters over Poland.

You're directed towards the same hangar, though you're not escorted by armed humvees with weapons pointed at you the entire way. Your curious flight pulls inside, and you note the four witches on the ground waiting for you, Clarissa wearing her arm in a simple sling, her flight suit ripped open at the shoulder.

You shut down and pop your canopy as a middle-aged man steps from one of the humvees and someone wheels a ladder over for you. Ice is the first one up it.

“Frank you-” She says, tears forming in the corner of her eyes as she looks at you.

[] Look awful, I know. How are the twins?

“Look awful.” you finish for her, pulling her down into a hug. She looks surprised, but doesn't fight it. “How are the twins?”

She straightens up as you let go, but still hovers on the edge of the cockpit as you unstrap everything. “Still in shock, I think.” She says. “Clarissa hit her shoulder on the canopy rail when they ejected, we think it's broken.”

“Fuck. Help me up?” You ask. She nods as you unhook your mask, letting a breif cascade of blood out of it.

“God, Frank... “ Ice hisses at you.

“I know.” You say, glad she's a witch as she helps you stand and exit the cockpit. You're a bit lightheaded, but everything seems to work. “How ya feeling, Merlin?”

“S-sleepy.” She says.

“Should I have Rachel carry you?” Ice asks.

“N-no, that's-” Merlin interrupts herself with a jaw-cracking yawn. “That's ok. I-I'll just rest for a second, ok?”

You look at Ice, who shares your worried glance. “Just a few seconds, kiddo.” You say.

It's a bit of a challenge getting down the stairs, though by the time you're at the bottom, Merlin is exiting the cockpit herself.

“How are you two?” You ask, walking over to Alyssa and Clarissa. Alyssa shrugs.

“I'm- we're ok.” She says. “That- that was close.”

You grin. “Tell me about it. At least you're not doing time in a burn ward.”

Ice shoots you a look there, though she doesn't say anything. Alyssa nods.

“Yeah, there's that. Hey, look, Frank, We're going to go lay down a while, ok? They've gotten us rooms at the hotel next door.”

“Ok, take it easy.” You say, swaying on your feet now. You'd figured the lightheadedness was temporary, apparently you were wrong.

Ice steps in next to you, wrapping an arm around your chest just under your arms, and pulling your arm over her shoulders. “Thanks boss.” you say, your words slurring a bit.

“Maybe we ought to be going, too?” She asks. “Get you in a bed for a while?”

Wipe the bib blood stains off, then go see the kiddies. We might get them in our squadron if we make nice with them here and give a good impression.

We get two more impressionable nopants to prod us into getting the plane-to-brain stuff, and Merlin gets some new friends (and tech).

See what we would become!

Also who would win in a dogfight Merlin/Frank vs Laika?
>>
>>37833804
Not really, nothing governs the size of a squadron, and we've only got 2 planes, we could easily fit another two in, and expand the roster plenty.
>>
>>37833878
Depend.
If it become endurance battle then Laika has better chance to win, otherwise they pretty much equal.

pft nope, Nato is dominating and has control over all their resources, they are not going to be facing shortages of things like Nazi Germany did.
>>
>>37834000
Witches are pretty rare and valuable, and there is a war on. Getting combat-experienced witches in a prominent front-line unit back to fighting shape would be something of a priority, even if the twins are smalltime.

[x] Lemme meet the kids, first.

You shake your head doggedly. “Not yet. Lemme meet the kids.”

“Frank-”

“We'll be quick.” You say. “Sides, not like I'm going anywhere without you right now anyway, right?”

“Y-yeah. I guess.” She says.

The canopies on the fandances are single piece- they rise forward and lock so you can't see the pilots. The armed guards don't look too intimidated, but it takes time before a pair of slender legs appears across the side of the canopy. The girl is taller than you expected- you peg her age at 12 to 13, maybe 14 but only just. She looks around, terrified, but doesn't try to get back in her aircraft. She stands there for a second before a man in civilian clothes, escorted by a pair of security troops, arrives in another humvee.

She sees him and shakes her head, spitting rapid fire Russian at him. He responds gently as she tears up- then says something and points to you. The other fandance's canopy opens, the dull black paint seeming to soak up the light around it. A girl with startling silver hair, cut short, steps out, descending the stairs while trying to keep her flight suit top down below her waist with one hand.

Healwitches come in all shapes and sizes and roles, from pediatritians to surgeons to doctors to pararescue field medics, but they are not a single role.

She calls out to her- friend? Sister? You're not sure, though you can't see much familial resemblance, and they both walk over to you and Ice, slowly. Fearfully.

One of them, the one with the reddish-brown hair, the first one out, begins speaking at you in Russian, her voice trembling. She looks up at you, tears in her eyes.

You smile sadly and shake your head. “No habla, kiddo.” you say. A look of confusion crosses her face and she switches to German.

You feel Ice stiffen at that, and a few looks go around the room. You shake your head again. “Don't do that one either.”

She shakes her head, openly crying now, and wraps her arms around your midsection, her tears soaking the front of your flight suit.

You look at Ice helplessley as the second one joins her, the both of them wailing their eyes out.

“What did they say?” You ask the doctor.

“That they were sorry.” He says, simply.

“And why do they speak fluent german?” Ice asks.

The doctor looks distinctly... uncomfortable, and you get the sudden feeling you just stepped in something nasty.

Just your luck.

Uhh its more the opposite, that its not because unconsciously you're smart enough to not use /tg/ dice, when quests go "We need dice" and they don't ever bother answering "Why do you need dice really?" then its a bad idea to use dice, this quest would be worse off if it did use dice.
>>
>>37834313

>>37834318
How roughed up is Frank?

You compared it to radiation, so is he suffering at the stage where he is losing motor skills more often/spots or are the intervals between him rocering are taking much longer?

Also how isSlider taking all of this?

Also what did the twins say while Slider was trapped inside?

Also if we did this even a bit wrong could the condition would have been worse?
>>
>>37834318
I'm glad we're nodice for sw89. They certainly have their purpose, but that purpose is to remove the CYOA-esque incentive to choose the best choice while simultaneously robbing the voters of agency- good choices can end poorly, bad decisions can be amazingly successful.
One may say that that's realistic but this is a narrative, not a simulation. Nothing wrong with any of those, but they serve very different purposes and audience tastes.
>>
>>37834392
>Also if we did this even a bit wrong could the condition would have been worse?

Both witches dead, no idea about the kidnappings, frank and merlin both tired out terribly, out of action and in a coma for at least a week.
>>
>>37834400
>One may say that that's realistic
It's certainly not realistic to end the quest with the MC dying because when they were walking down the street they rolled a 1 on a random encounter table, tripped on the pavewalk and snapped their neck when they fell over.

I shit you not, this has happened, and more than once...

Dice have a purpose, in this quest however they don't belong.

*Ice Afeard*

"Frank?" Tabitha asked for the fifth time in a row, trying not to cry in front of the man she was all but carrying down the corridor.

She'd seen Frank like this before, that was what she told herself. She should be used to it by now, used to seeing him come back from a hard fight as though he was only minutes away from-

"I'm here." Frank finally replied, his head rolling forward to look down at her.

"...Sure about that?" She smiled sadly up at him, trying to put on a brave face.

"Sure 'm sure," he moaned, blood leaking from his lips and dripping onto his flight suit. "Oh... oh man..."

They stopped walking in the corridor right then, Ice whimpering as she reached up to wipe the blood from his face. She could see it in his eyes, see the life draining out of them. It was as if he knew he had only minutes to go.

'Not like this, please no.'

"God dammit, Frank." She whispered, unable to stop the world from growing so damned watery right then.

"Sorry..." he managed to say. "Usually not this bad-" and then he coughed, a miserable heaving cough that robbed him of all strength in his legs. Blood splattered to the floor, and he collapsed against the witch. Tabitha had to adjust herself to catch him before he slipped to the floor. "Just need a nap, is all-"

"N-no, I am not taking you to your room, we are going to the hos-"

"Tabitha." Frank said, with sudden forcefulness that froze the witch in place. "Dealt with it before. Just need to sleep."

"Frank you can't-"

"Please do this for me." His plea destroyed any of her objections right then. He knew. Had to know.

"Okay, I'll... take you to bed."

"Finally bein' honest..." Frank croaked, still managing to smile. She managed not to sob while laughing.

>>
>>37834515
Sure, but there are probably updates or differences in the design details that can help us understand how the Russians are making progress here.
It's not like we captured the first V2s, but having more than one jet to pick apart is a great boon.
Learn and Incorporate, Merlin! Learn and Incorporate it all!
>>
>>37834542
No, that's what happens when the QM decides "I need an excuse to write horrible shit"
>>
>>37834555
My point was that it doesn't matter what time you try to shoehorn them in, if there is no good reason for including them, if the quest is not better because of their addition, then don't add dice to quests.

Too many QM's out there just think that they need dice to make a quest 'whole', very few ever actually get the benefits out of them, most of the time they just cause problems needlessly.

He couldn't even remember what the two girls he'd just killed himself to save looked like. He asked if the twins were okay several times, straining to hear Tabitha assure him that they were okay, banged up but alive and well.

He didn't notice when she steered him away from his assigned room, eyes open but seeing nothing. He didn't react when they left the barracks, his only reaction to the early morning sun was to shiver.

Heavy enough that she struggled to carry him, but she didn't dare summon her familiar now. He felt cold, unutterably cold.

"So tired," he groaned. "Just wanna..."

"I know, Frank, I know I know I know."

"This is a hospital isn't it," Frank mumbled his accusation.

"Couldn't help it," Ice sniffled. "I'm sorry Frank. I'm sorry I worry so much."

"Jus' something t' get used to," he grunted, trying to adjust himself on the bed. The most he was able to do was move one of his arms an inch. She lay against him, arms wrapped tightly around the shivering pilot, trying to keep him warm even as he seemed to just sap the heat away from her own body.

"Rachel says you're a piece of shit for m-making me cry," Tabitha shook her head. "A-acting like this is nothing-"

"Barely feel a thing."

"She's telling the others," She squeezed him. "Except for M-Merlin, she's asleep too, t-totally out cold. You're going to have the whole squadron in here any minute now, so try to stay awake, okay?"

No response.

"Okay?" she asked again, giving him a light shake.

"Uh huh." For a moment, their eyes met. To her, it was as though he was looking through her, seeing something she couldn't.

"We all got a lot to say, be rude of you to just... go away."

"Goin' nowhere fast."

"Asshole."

"Guess I am."

Tabitha stole a glance at the door to the hospital room, hoping that Rachel had returned. Ideally with a doctor or nurse in tow.

"Hey Frank?"

"Nnngh."

"You... were really amazing up there." He'd finally stopped shivering right then. She could hear his heart beat slowing through his chest, his breathing less erratic. "I wish you could see it like I do. Th-there's nothing else like it."

"Huh."

"You could have killed those kids, I- I even wanted you to do it, wanted you to stay safe. But you saved them. Y-you're a hero to m- them."

"Guardian of Witcherrsss..." he slurred. "Shall Defend."

"A Guardian does me no good if he's..." Tabitha couldn't even finish, burying her face against his chest, trembling as she felt one of his hands rest on her back. "God, Frank..."

"...Guess it does gehme into some trrrrbrrr."

"I know it's not up to me, but I hate seeing you like this!" Tabitha wailed. "I hate that I can't help you!"

"Helpin' me jusfine..."

"I'm not Rachel, I'm not Katya-"

"Tab-"

"Just your commander, it's all I *should* be, really!" His bloodied uniform was clenched tightly in her fists. "It would be so much easier to watch you kill yourself if I didn't care so much about you!"

She felt his hand slip away from her back.

-

There was a time when Tabitha Kazanski did not feel this way about Frank Bishop.

She could remember the arguments from before he had taken on Merlin as his RIO. How he seemed to do everything in his power, in conjunction with his fellow Asshole-At-Arms to piss her off. The flybys on the Saratoga that had gotten coffee spilled on her nearly a half dozen times. Rachel's 'betrayal' by saying that he wasn't "all that bad." Purposefully loud conversations between him and Maverick about "technique" for relieving specific needs at sea that always happened to take place in front of her office door. Even now she hadn't entirely forgiven him for that last bit.

In a lot of ways, she had to thank Merlin for changing Frank.

It was more than just turning over a new leaf. Merlin had given Frank a new purpose for flying. He flew for her, for his fellow squadron-mates. He somehow managed to worm his way into Spellcaster's family. When Maverick struggled to understand why Orion had left her behind without so much as a goodbye, Frank had been her shoulder to cry on. When Rachel had her own moments where her brave and wild front couldn't deal with the reputation she'd earned, he never judged her. When Katya had left everything she knew behind for a new life, Frank had become an Ace in a day to rescue her.

When the reality of war cost Tabitha sleep, made her worry night after night that there would come a time that she would be unable to keep her squadron in one piece, Frank had been there to ease those fears.

When he learned of Wendy's own personal hell, he dove into the world of witch politics without hesitation to rescue her. Gone face to face with a Matron to retrieve something precious to Tabitha, something she thought she'd never see in her lifetime.

At Tanana, he'd almost given his life for witches and pilots he barely knew. Did it time after time over Japan, over Iceland. Over Berlin. Poland. And now he'd done it again, for a pair a witches he could barely remember saving now.

She was afraid he'd finally succeed giving his life up for someone else, before she could say what she needed to say to him.

-

"It's unprofessional," Tabitha began, "for me to act like I do around you, and I know that. I know that Commander Laroux is right, that I'm trying to hold you back."

"Nobody's perfect." Frank muttered.

"Hah... j-jerkass, I'm tryin' to say something here..." She took a deep breath, stealing another glance at the door, familiar manifesting on its own as she looked back at him. "There's... people who are here right now because of you. We all owe you so much, and you're just... fading away like this."

When he didn't respond, she crawled atop him, legs straddling his waist.

"Frank?"

His eyes were focused elsewhere, a contented look on his face. She leaned closer, listening for his heartbeat, for breathing. Nothing.

"You're NOT going to get the last word with me again!"

She shook him by the shoulders, felt for a pulse. CPR, just like she'd been trained, pounded on his chest when he failed to respond.

"...You can't do this, Frank," she sobbed. "Can't leave me, not like this." Her fists beat against his chest again and again until grief made it impossible to even manage that.

"You can't leave us Frank. It's not fair."

She pressed herself against Frank, hugging him and wishing she could pull him back to the world. Not believing he was gone.

"Come back to me, Frank Bishop. Th-that's an order."

Closing her eyes, Tabitha pressed her lips to his, the blue light of her magic drowning out the world around them.

-

She awoke to someone poking her rather vigorously on the back.

"You order him to come back to you?" Rachel asked. "That's in like the third or fourth book of Dragonri-"

"R-RACHEL!?"

Tabitha tried to push away from Frank, realizing that there were a pair of hands, his hands, holding her against him. A look of terror spread across her face as she noticed the camera in her XO's hand.

"Uhbwuh haaah huh..."

Hearing a loud snore, Tabitha looked back to her pilot. She found him sleeping peacefully, that same smile remained plastered on his face.

"I walked in, just as you kissed him and did the... thing." Slider said quietly, sitting in one of the guest seats. "You just... collapsed, Tab. Out like a light."

"Guh...huhbuh-"

"I finally managed to find a doc to come in. We, uh, couldn't quite separate you guys. You were hugging him almost as hard as I would have."

"F-Frank was-"

"Dead clinically, when you did that. Wasn't he?" Rachel looked away; Tabitha couldn't respond. "We determined he's fine, more or less. Won't wake up for a while, he's utterly exhausted. Like you." She stood up out of the chair. "Well, time to get some photos printed. I'll... I'll s-see you later."

"Rachel, you can- I can-"

"Thanks for saving him, Tabby." Slider said, tears running down her cheeks when she finally looked back at her friend. "Stay with him awhile, won't you?" She walked briskly out of the room, not looking back.

"Goddammit, Frank." Falling back against Frank, Tabitha let out a shaky breath.

At least he was warm again.
