Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is humid, and the date is December 31.

You are Kyril Torikov, and your plan for the New Year is in danger. An attack on Academy City had been planned right on New Year’s Day. Their goal was to recover several Code M within the city. One of them you knew personally before he betrayed the City and was put on ice. The other was an immortal of sorts. Those objectives were buried under the guise of an attack by the Crusade to establish a foothold in the city. You had yet to pass on the intel to your superiors. That had been the deal. Actionable intel for some personal leave. It was actionable since it came from a time traveller from the future. This wasn’t the first time you dabbled with the natural order of things and you wondered if it was the right thing to do. Ilija had warned you of the consequences of using this future knowledge. You slept on it.

There were also other consequences to consider. You had promised your little sister to spend New Year with her. Backing out now and on such short notice would be unpleasant. Not to mention that a precondition to their safety was that Academy City itself was safe. The impending attack threatened that. You had to do something about it. There weren’t many other choices to be fair. Contacting your friends was one option. They all were still in the City, somehow able to go about their daily lives with little interruption. Another thought struck. What about your mother? She was Code M. Maybe she could help figure something out. That said you had no idea how either option could help. They didn’t have the resources the City could bring to bear. Or did they?

It wasn’t hard to contact your mother. It was, however, unnatural in how fast she reduced the distance between where she was, and where you were. She had told you it was the first time you had asked her for help. Considering that you had only been reunited earlier this month, it wasn’t a lie. You noted her expressions as you explained the situation to her. She was as excited as a child would be about spending more time with you. When the problem came up however, her face fell in to neutrality. The red Code M emissions around her intensified.

“This will not do at all,” she agreed, “Do you know more of the enemy?”

Lycanthropy was a broad subject to draw from in terms of Code M. As a topic it was almost as romanticised as vampires. They also had a myriad amount of weaknesses. Your mother spoke from experience apparently,

“If they are smart, and knowing Teacher, they will be, they will all be unique. They would use aspects, parts of the legend and belief. Each will be different and a difficult enemy to defeat. I would say it is clever if they were not on the other side.”

Well there was that name again. You didn’t have time to ponder it as she got up and beckoned you to follow her.

“For most enemies, I just punch out all their blood,” she said, “That might not work here. So first, we should start with the silver cure-all. Then we’ll move on to aconite and the other solutions.”

“Where exactly we going?” you asked as you followed her.

“To war.”

“I keep hearing that name, Teacher, but know so little about it,” you said.

You were just following your mother at this point. Hopefully she had a way of obtaining a massive amount of silver without outright stealing it. You hoped you had enough pull to keep a lid on it at any rate.

“How do you not know son?” she asked, “You were his disciple.”

“Not according to my records.”

She sighed. Maybe it was a deliberate block, or outright removal. Who knew what the City did to your mind. You didn’t voice that out loud though.

“Or maybe it’s just brain damage,” you continued calmly, “It sounds like you know him, mother. Should I be concerned?”

Her amusement was clear. If she could see your smile she would have laughed harder.

“He was an absolute gentleman,” she stated with faked indignity, “He had helped me, and many others before him.”

That didn’t explain why he was orchestrating the attack. Your mother did not have many ideas either in that regard.

“For all I know, he is pursuing a private vendetta against the Chi-City,” she slipped up there, “He is…I believe you call them Code M?”

You nodded. That explained much. The Crusade had always had a Science-versus-Religion undertone to it. However that train of thought brought with it another set of implications. It was the Pope that declared the Crusade. So either Teacher was the Pope or he possessed enough power to persuade the Pope to do so.

“You must remember my son,” your mother corrected, “that the war did not start because of any one man, but because of a chain of events started by many long ago.”

You left it at that as you arrived at a power plant, a nuclear power plant. It was an older one, a PWR design that had long been considered obsolete in Academy City. Just as well as that it was inactive, considering that the control rods were what your mother was no doubt after.

One problem solved many more to go, you thought. You really needed to explain the situation to someone before things got really out of hand. Nayuta was the obvious choice but that really would mean you’d have to cancel on your sister. Then a thought struck, why did Nayuta have to know it at all? If this could be solved with a little family outing, then surely no one could complain. “Easier to beg forgiveness” and all that rot.

If your mother was re-appropriating nuclear reactor control rods then you might as well bring your sister in to this. Before you thought things could get worse, it was better to mitigate as much damage as possible. You rang her up.

“Onii-san, how can Misaka help you, says Misaka says Misaka as she wonders on the nature of onii-san’s call.”

“Our mother is stealing nuclear reactor control rods,” you stated without preamble, “We’re going to acquire some aconite next.”

There was a lengthy pause on the line. Last Order was typing in the background.

“There is a botanical gardens in School District 4 if that is what you are asking onii-san says Misaka says Misaka as she answers the unstated question.”

That wasn’t quite it but you had to break it to her sooner or later.

“We’re gearing up for an invasion of werewolves.”

“Nazi werewolves says Misaka says Misaka as she asks hopefully for confirmation.”

“Probably not,” you were also slightly disappointed, “I’m thinking instead of watching fireworks, why not have some of our own?”

“Onii-san are you sure you are not mixing work with pleasure says Misaka says Misaka as she suspects onii-san of trying to frag two noobs in one shot.”

“Maybe,” you replied blandly.

Your mother came out with a bundle of control rods under her arms.

“Are you talking to Mishka?”

You nodded.

“Tell her we’re going to need a very big gun, 20 millimetre barrel,” your mother instructed, “While we’re at it, make it an automatic and somewhat mobile.”

“Misaka knows just the thing says Misaka says Misaka as she exclaims excitedly about the purchase of World War 2 weaponry.”

“What’s next?”

“Well I was thinking that maybe you could bring that girl with you to go pick some flowers,” your mother answered.

“We’re also going to need to tell onee-chan about the change of plans says Misaka says Misaka as she remembers our sister.”

Ah yes, the middle child, Sparky.

While appealing, you think this was the perfect time to deal with Sparky. It was a bit tricky seeing as there were several issues to solve simultaneously. One, you were going to come clean and hope that you would be forgiven. She didn’t have to, after you lied to her in the worst ways possible. Apart from trying to survive revealing that to her there was the matter of securing her cooperation. All of this while keeping the existence of Code M a secret. Only a dozen or so were cleared to know of Code M. Those that knew anyway were either Code M themselves or weren’t spreading the secret around. It was bad enough that Code M killed to protect their secret. There was no need to also incur the City’s wrath.

Regardless, Last Order had pinpointed Sparky’s location and given it to you. That and she was somehow manipulating her into staying in one location. You checked your equipment one last time, as if it was enough to prevent electrocution.

“Oh, is this who you wanted me to see?” Sparky asked in to her phone.

She was no doubt talking to Last Order. Standing next to her was Touma. She snapped her phone shut quickly after receiving a reply.

“Well?”

She wasn’t happy to see you. There were a lot of reasons why that was. Touma just waved awkwardly though you pretended to pay him no mind.

“We need your help,” you stated.

“Everyone needs my help these days,” she turned around.

That tone suggested disappointment? No, it was closer to bitter, you thought. What had happened to her?

“First let me apologise then for the loss of your sword,” you started.

She waved it off, annoyed.

“Second, the City is about to come under attack and we require the Strongest Electromaster,” you continued, “In exchange for your assistance, I will tell you what really happened to Kyril Torikov afterwards.”

Sparks flew around her form as she turned around. Her face was twisted in a nasty scowl.

“No,” she snarled, “I am not doing any of your dirty work anymore.”

You honestly didn’t expect that. A small arc of lightning lashed out and nearly hit you.

“Least of all, I don’t need you using Aniki’s name like he was some kind of bargaining chip,” she shouted, “He’s dead, and there’s nothing more to be said about it. If you’re going to drag his name in the mud and think I’m going to let it go then you have another thing coming. Go back to your masters and tell them I have bigger things to worry about.”

Touma looked like he was caught between a rock and a hard place. You would have felt sorry for him, if you weren’t the topic of conversation to be honest. In her eyes, you were just another product of the City and not someone she trusted. Sometimes you forgot that.

“You know, I just wanted to have a peaceful holiday but obviously that’s not going to happen. I’m going to stop this stupid war,” she declared, “But first I need to find the one that started it. If you don’t have that then this conversation is over. Come on you, we’re going to find this someone who can help us.”

Her rant finished, she grabbed Touma and made to leave. That didn’t leave you with many options. You knew a few people who could help but you weren’t sure how much weight your words would have. Not much, unless you took off the helmet, you bet.

You didn’t see what else you could do. CADRE wasn’t helpful in these kinds of situations. It was time to pull out the big guns to get her attention. Besides, if she got angry enough she could cause a black out in the immediate area. Your secret would be safe. Last Order would take care of the rest. That you could trust.

“Sparky, wait.”

She turned around. A hiss later and the helmet was off, tossed in to Touma’s waiting arms. You were prepared.

“You.”

Gravity felt a little off as the clouds above circled ominously in the lack of wind.

“You,” she repeated, “You.”

You didn’t get to contemplate how angry she was, repeating one word like that, because you were struck. It was a bolt from the heavens. A flash followed by searing pain. It was quick but it wasn’t over. She was conducting the lightning and it was directed all at you.

You were brought down to one knee by the second strike. The third had bowled you over. As you lay flat, more landed. Repeatedly, you were struck. Over and over again, the pain threatened to shut you down. It wasn’t until you could finally smell the burning did it stop.

Your vision was blurred and shaken. Your body moved involuntarily. Nerves were still discharging. Your pain receptors were working overtime to inform you that, yes you had just been struck by lightning, repeatedly. The kick didn’t help matters much. She hadn’t stopped out of mercy either. It was Touma who had grabbed her shoulder. He had had enough. Despite the disorientation and the tinnitus you could still hear her say,

“I don’t know why but that idiot thinks I should give you a chance. Tell me everything or help me stop this war.”

You could barely make out your own voice. Hell, your breathing was ragged. The whole act only aggravated everything. The corners of your eyes burned which lengthened. You think you were crying. Sparky’s eyes, they were still hard. What happened to that girl? The question had repeated itself in your mind. You had the answer from the beginning. It was you. You happened. That was why you were going to be honest. Telling her everything, whether she was allowed to or not. She deserved it. At least that was what you promised her before darkness took you.

The time is 2133, the weather is rainy, and the date remains unchanged.

It was a hospital room. You recognised it as your vision finally cleared. Bandages had been wrapped around you like some kind of mummy. Pain was dulled, muted, until you moved. Then it came in like a rolling wave. It was a start. You still owed Sparky that explanation. You still needed to prepare for the invasion. There were things you needed to do but you couldn’t right now. Frustration mounted.

“Take it easy,” it was a familiar voice, “It’s actually much worse than it looks.”

Heaven Canceller had entered the room at some point.

“If it weren’t for the metal in your arm you might not have made it, though it burnt you pretty bad too,” he continued, “And I’ve got two very impatient young ladies waiting outside to speak to you, even if you aren’t really in a condition to speak.”

You supposed one of them was Sparky. The other you hadn’t a clue.

“No time like the present,” you croaked, “You have any painkillers doc?”

Heaven Canceller actually frowned and said,

“I’ll see what I can do.”

The two young ladies that came in did include Sparky. The other was your boss. Neither looked too pleased. They both opened their mouth to speak. You interrupted them with a cough and a request for water. Grudgingly, Nayuta left your bed side to get a glass of water.

“You are incredibly stupid,” Misaka said.

It wasn’t like you could deny that.

“I’m still angry but we have bigger problems now so I’ll table that for now.”

“Exactly,” Nayuta returned, “Did it occur to you that when you had actionable intel that you should inform your superiors?”

She had you take a sip of water. It was clear and cool. Like a jagged knife going down your throat.

“Time sensitive,” you replied after a bit.

The way you emphasised it must have gotten through to Nayuta because she nodded.

“Well I didn’t have much to say to begin with,” she leaned in close and whispered, “Watch yourself.”

Then she was out the door.

“So much for watching the fireworks huh, Aniki?” she asked, “Don’t worry about it, I’ve got it covered. That idiot is helping too and I’ll call Kudou if I have to.”

You sighed. With the way you are now you weren’t much use to anyone right now.

“That’s all I have to say really, when you get better we’ll talk.”

She left, replaced by Heaven Canceller. His visit was likewise brief. On your bedside were a red pill and a glass of water. Beyond that was the visitor’s chair, where your helmet and clothes rested. The message was clear. A temporary solution if you absolutely have to. The New Year was only a few hours away.

There was no time. So with some difficulty, you took the pill. There was another fifteen minutes of waiting before it actually did anything. Then another five was taken just getting ready. With a hiss the helmet came to life as it settled around your head. With a small “welcome back” message, you took note of your status. Overall Combat Efficient peaked at 70% and was predicted to drop as time wore on. You suppose that was the pill at work.

The time now is 2205.

The nurses didn’t give you trouble as you strode down the hall and in to the parking lot. Your car was parked in the handicapped slot. It was considerate of Nayuta to have left it there after they were done repainting it. Now it was black as smooth glossy black. You ransacked the first aid kit for more painkillers before hopping in. The glove compartment really should have been renamed to the assault rifle compartment since there were two of them there with additional mags hidden about the interior of the car.

“Onii-san, you’re not supposed to be up yet says Misaka says Misaka as she notices an anomaly through her backdoor in the VERDICT OS.”

“I’ll be fine,” you started the car, “Where is everyone?”

“Onee-chan is gathering up Kudou-sama and is trying to rally Judgement to a proper state of defensive readiness says Misaka says Misaka as she explains the situation. Mama Torikov is trying to pick up our party favour but is having some trouble.”

Well if you weren’t supposed to be out of the hospital right now then you probably didn’t want to face Sparky. You chose to go help someone that didn’t put you in the hospital in the first place. She was by the rail terminal in School District 17. She was arguing with a bunch of Anti-Skill but so far it was just that, arguing. Behind her, on a flatbed rail car was the party favour in question. It was a halftrack, a German Sonderkraftfahrzeug 11 according to CADRE.

“What’s the problem?” you butted in.

“VERDICT,” one of the officers snapped, “We were trying to stop this woman from smuggling a weapon in to the city.”

“A weapon?”

Your voice was still rough. It only intimidated the officers around you.

“Ah yeah, half track is fine,” the officer explained, “It’s the Flak 43 mounted on the bed, according to the records, is actually illegal to move in and out, especially of someone of her record.”

Talk about a party favour, you thought.

“And if I said it was for me?”

“I suppose if you could take over,” he shrugged, “We got enough problems already with the heightened readiness state. What are you going to do with it?”

“It’s a mobile anti-air gun, what do you think we’re going to do with it?” your mother asked.

“Park it somewhere legal I hope,” was the answer.

A few moments of bargaining with his superiors and they released it to you. Now it was your responsibility to use it responsibly. Then again, it wasn’t like it came loaded with ammunition. Your mother had an answer for that. Nuclear reactor control rods repurposed as silver sabot rounds.

“It’s amazing what a few hours work could do,” your mother supplied, “Driver or gunner?”

CADRE was more help if you were a gunner so you had your mother drive. That suited your mother just fine.

“Reminds me of my army days,” she remarked.

She spoke of it a bit more. How she drove around artillery pieces and then relayed targeting instructions. The actual gunners had been her subordinates. Loading up some improvised ammo in the back of the flatbed and reversing the halftrack really brought back the memories.

“Then I fought the Georgians,” there she drew her tale to a close, “Anyway, I didn’t have time to cut the rods down to size so it’s front loader only. Watch the ammo too. I’ve coated it in poison. We’ll find you a loader when Mishka and your sisters come aboard.”

The Sd. Kfz. 11 wasn’t the fastest of land vehicles but you managed to pick up Last Order and the four Sisters in a timely fashion. You had removed the soft top as the four climbed in the back. Last Order sat up front, laptop in hand as she continued both tracking Sparky and managing her corp. You didn’t manage to get to her in time,

“Happy New Year says Misaka says Misaka as she wishes all her family a happy new year.”

The phrase only managed a single go round. At exactly 0001, a shadow fell across the City. Up above was a gigantic air ship of some kind. It had descended from out of nowhere, displacing the clouds up above as you stared at it. The City’s lights went out. Then search lights raked the sky. In the distance, an air raid siren could be heard.

It was time.

Father had always said you would get up to no good. He was right in a sense. It didn’t make him any less of a hypocrite though. After all, he was the one performing inhumane experiments on his flock to open up a path to immortality. Nothing was sacred in his pursuit of his goals. Taboo did not stop him. Neither did excommunication. That was why he had hid himself in some small unimportant town in Japan. You, you simply didn’t know at the time, content as you were to simply bask in his fake love. It was thus rather ironic that you would be the closest he had ever come to achieving immortality. You would live forever as his daughter, never quite aging, never quite alive. You were undying. He was not.

It would be years until you learned of the real word for what he was, Magician. In a world that mostly adhered to science, it was a bit of a shock. Then again it explained everything. From your mysterious saviour and assailants, to Pops and Chibi, they were all related by the same thing. Your instinctual distrust of such shady personages finally made sense. It was why you were content to live in the City of Science. You were safer here than anywhere else. Magicians and their ilk were not welcome here. That of course did not explain why you were considered the Slumlord of the Strange, or She-Who-Not-To-Go-At. No, it had happened because you,

To be fair, the District was a mess and you were in the perfect place to pick up the pieces. See, it all started like a normal fairy tale. Boy meets girl. Girl slaps him on the back. Her hand gets blown off, and they all have a good giggle. That was how you met Accel-kun. Of course he was more confused, and less giggly than you were. It didn’t help that you hadn’t learned that touching without permission had your hand molecularly disassembled, whatever that meant. He was down there because someone kidnapped his princess or something. They even had the gall to leave him a ransom note. For the next two days, the two of wandered the district, flattening thugs as you went. After the first few thugs, those that attacked you were either the kidnappers themselves or really, really stupid. The former meant you were getting closer finding Accel’s princess and the latter was a service to humanity.

By the time you were done, you think you had carved a bloody swathe through at least three major gangs and ended a countless amounts of smaller ones. Which was nice since Accel-kun did find his princess. Her name was Suzushina Yuriko. You called her Suzu-chan because she was cute as a button. Then there was the small matter of making sure it never happened again. Accel-kun dumped that responsibility on you since he had better things to do. Of course he’d dropped by later but at the time you didn’t know that. Instead, the first week was pretty hectic, not because you didn’t command fear but because you had no idea what the hell you were doing. It was boring as hell trying to keep everything afloat and everyone happy. Then you remembered you didn’t have to. Anyone who had a problem with that took a one-way trip with Toshino Airlines. The biggest problem at the time was,

The problem with having united the gangs here is that pretty soon, they were going to start having some problems with each other. It was kind of obvious, now that you thought about. Big muscle-y idiots with less brains than you were bound to get in each other’s business and not in the right way. That required you to bust some heads. Then you got sick of it. Instead, you just let them be. Two days later they were begging you to clean house. You had to admit, that was frickin’ smart. It was almost like you became the final argument in all things within the District. You were like the Supreme Court, only the verdict ended in broken teeth and so many tears. It was kinda fun in that respect. So much fun that you actually moved in to the District. Anyone else that didn’t want to deal with you pretty much moved out. Pussies the whole lot of them.

You remembered the ones that gave you trouble. There were Shiage’s kids. Never really got to know him that well though, he always fainted when you stared at him long enough. Thankfully his best bud had that covered seeing as he was the second-in-command ever since you and Accel-kun bumped some guy named Komaba something-or-another off. They called themselves Skill-Out since they had no Ability or anything, just a buncha zeroes. Trick and his gear heads pretty much ran the market around the parts. Sometimes they got a bit pushy, forgetting who was really in charge until you beat a little sense in them. There was also a small one, funnily named Big Spider, but really it was just a bunch of eggheads who thought they could outsmart you. They were surprised to find out that they couldn’t outsmart your fist. Course that wasn’t the biggest problem you faced. That came when,

You practically had it made. Food, water, a warm bed and heads to bust, you couldn’t have asked for more. Even the City stopped trying to come in and restore peace and order. Hah, like you hadn’t already beaten them to it. It was when they started dumping the gangers that had run away only made you even more amused. Those that didn’t and couldn’t live with you either had to shape up or you they’d just get dumped right back on your doorstep. You liked to think you were doing your part as a civil service. Then Number 2 just had to go and ruin it.

You really didn’t know what he was thinking. Maybe his mom dropped him on his head, or maybe his dad didn’t give him enough love or something. He tried to start some shit with the City. It really wasn’t your problem until he started clamouring for attention like a needy little brat. Accel-kun was sick of him too, so the two of you decided to shut him up. Coincidentally, he was ruining your attempts at trying to find a gift for Suzu-chan’s birthday. To make a long story short, you trapped him in a parallel dimension, or at least that’s what they keep telling you. Then Accel-kun turned him to dust like a vampire in the sun. They’ve been trying to keep it quiet-like and everything but Accel-kun kept calling you Number 2 whenever the two of you were alone with Suzu-chan. It didn’t help that he had that stupid grin on his face whenever he did. You swore he was making fun of you.

Interlude End.

Steel rain. The thirty-six stratagems does not support this course of action. Werewolves, why did it have to be werewolves? When writefag and /tg/ meet, the story begins.
