> Previously, on Mage: the Awakening Quest!

You are rudely awakened by a phone call from Hally, one of the Thyrsus Mages you rescued from the Acamoth from Christmas last year. She requested your aid in dealing with a rather powerful spirit in the Shadow World, and after mulling it over you agreed to help her. Upon reaching the location in Michael's old stomping grounds you travelled to the Shadow World to meet this spirit, a humanoid one that appeared to set up a dueling circle of some kind. After challenging the spirit to a duel, you quickly realized just who the spirit is, and how outclassed you are in the fight.

Michael entererd a brawling duel with Bruce Lee.

While trying your best to win in a straight-up fight, you are soundly beaten to within an inch of consciousness, but reveling in the glory of fighting one of the strongest humans to ever walk the earth. He recognized your talents and even taught you a special move, one that seems strong, though you never hope to have a need to use it. He soon departed, though you get the feeling that if given enough Mana you could call upon him for more training or aid.

> And now, back to the action!
>>
Michael closes the door behind him, the box of donuts shifting about in his free hand as he struggles to keep the two cups of coffee from spilling. Elizabeth rounds the corner in a loose t-shirt and a pair of yoga pants, greeting her husband at the door with a quick kiss.

"Thanks hun," she says, grabbing the coffees from his hand and setting them down. "I had a hankering for some donuts."

"No problem," you reply, flipping the box open to a dozen chocolate-glazed donuts, to which she grabs one and begins to munch on. "So, you'll never believe what I dealt with for Hally and Yang." You quickly recount the duel with Lee, and even how you got some advice from the martial arts master.

"Huh... You think that some other well-known Sleepers might be in the Shadow World too?"

> It's possible... Unlikely, but possible

At that, you shrug. "I don't know... I guess it's possible, but Lee is still a pretty well-known person in terms of modern memory, it could just be a sort of collective consciousness keeping his spirit alive."

"Kinda like Santa," she says mid-bite of her donut.

"Yeah, something like that." You sip the cup of coffee, savoring the taste of the freshly brewed pot. "So, how goes Diana's research and theory-crafting on finding the Profane Urim?"

"Honey, she only started it like 16 hours ago, this is gonna take some time, especially considering that this item isn't supposed to exist."

"Well there's got to be something we can do to help her out."

At that, she shrugs, reaching over and dialing in a number on her phone. "Well, go ask her." She tosses the phone your way, and you fumble about for a moment before getting a hand on the device and putting it next to your ear. "Graceful," she smirks your way.

"Shove it," you reply, throwing a donut at her. The phone rings, and after a dozen rings you hang up. "No answer."

"Hmm... That's odd." You hand the phone back to her and she re-dials the number. Another 45 seconds pass before she too hangs up. "This is definitely not like her. Even when she's been sleep deprived or passed out from a binge crafting session."

"You think we should go check on her, make sure she didn't kick the bucket or something?"

"... Yeah, we probably should." She grabs the box of donuts and slips her shoes on, as you hold the door open for her, fishing the keys for the car out of your pocket.

The drive down to her warehouse is relatively quick, as the usual morning traffic isn't nearly as bad because it's a Saturday. You park the car outside and walk up to her door. You knock on it with a fair bit of force (as it's a solid metal door) only to have it swing open as your fist collides with the metal sheet plating. Concerned, you motion for Elizabeth to hang back a bit, and you quickly dash inside with your Spirit Sight turning on.

the inside is still littered with her half-assembled machine parts, car engine blocks, WW1 and WW2 tanks and jet engines, but there's piles of broken stone littering the ground leading up to her work station. Her furnace is smouldering, the heat and flames inside of it dying down, the embers glowing a reddish-orange.

And no sign of Diana, either.

"Liz, you can come in now," you yell back to her. She enters, looking around the area, fiddling with the machines and kicking over the stones and pebbles on the ground.

"Hmm... She usually doesn't mess around with stones, she prefers metal and plastic."

"You think you can use your magic to see if there's any way to find out what happened?" You begin to look around her furnace and work station, as most of the mess seems to be centered around here.

"Yeah, give me a moment." You hear her begin to speak in High Speech as a ways of helping power the spell she is looking to cast. While you look around you notice what looks like an old lantern resting upon her desk, a large purple candle burning inside the metal device, a red flame dancing back and forth. It's pretty ornate looking too, as etchings of gargoyles line the metal framing of the lantern.

You feel the spell finish as she finishes chanting, and the red flame immediately turns green. You recoil a bit in shock at the color change, as the etchings on the side of the lantern begin to shift and bulge out of the metal.

"Uhh... Liz?" You scramble back a bit from the lantern as two gargoyles quickly emerge from the side, quickly growing in size and shape to nearly 2 feet high, stone body and wings flapping the air. Both look past you and at Liz, her eyes glowing blue as she looks around her.

"Skree!" Both immediately fly at her, stone claws reaching to claw out her eyes.

You quickly form a bolt of Spirit energy and fire it at one of the gargoyles. The bolt hits, blowing off a chunk of it's tail but the beasts continue to fly at Elizabeth. "Liz!"

She looks up with barely enough time to raise her hands in defense, the claws ripping into her arms pretty deeply, red gashes marking her arm. "Fuck! What the hell!?" She looks past you, finger pointed at something behind you. "Look out!"

You glance back and see another gargoyle emerging from the lantern, this one flying directly at you. You barely duck out of the way in time as it flies up into the air with its two bretheren as they begin to swoop around for a second fly-by attack.

The Gargoyles are a bloodline created by the Tremere as servitors. Although technically not a Tremere bloodline, the bloodline is largely under their control.

The Gargoyles were created using the blood of three different clans: the Gangrel, the Nosferatu, and the Tzimisce. The blood was combined to form three specific types of Gargoyle: scouts (Gangrel-Nosferatu), warriors (Gangrel-Tzimisce), and sentinels (Nosferatu-Tzimisce). Warriors focus on Potence and combat Abilities; sentinels focus on Fortitude, Alertness and other such Traits; and scouts practise Stealth, Survival and the like.

You hurry over and grab onto the lantern, and immediately you recoil in pain as it feels as though you are touching a white-hot piece of metal, even though you see no heat or warping of the lantern itself besides the small, green flame dancing about inside the lantern itself.

You glance back and see Elizabeth grabbing a large wrench, smashing the injured gargoyle you blasted out of the sky, as it turns into a thousand stone pebbles clattering to the ground. "The lantern! As an aside, I'm noticing that not many people seem to be contributing to the quest, and enthusiasm for the quest is dying down. Is it because people don't know how to play the system (even with my insistance of trying to be new player friendly) or just lack of interest in the story?

Maybe less people are contributing because nothing 'controversial' is happening? Some people don't vote when the option they prefer is winning, for example.

You fumble with the latch to the lantern, trying to not burn your fingers off with how hot the metal feels. It takes a few moments to get the latch open, but once you do the door swings open rather easily. You reach inside and pinch the flame between your fingers, and the fire is much cooler when compared to the metal felt. The flame is extinguished near instantly and you look around, the gargoyles still flying about. "That didn't stop them," you scream back at her.

She ducks as one flies by her, the other trying hard to figure out a way to dive bomb you. "Then smash them out of the sky! No magic though!"

You hurry over to the forge, lifting up a pretty sizable hammer next to it, and run out to the nearest gargoyle, swinging the wood and metal tool at the swooping stone construct. It connects to the beast's head, and it crumbles to dust around you, as Elizabeth continues to flail about with the last remaining gargoyle. You hurry over and together are able to smash it to pieces, as Liz hurries over to the lantern.

"What the fuck is that lantern," you ask her as she begins to look around the workplace with her still-glowing blue eyes.

"It's a Witch Candle," she says, looking around the building. "Normally it's a pewter candlestick, but this one was a metal lantern..."

"Honey, you're bleeding."

She looks down at her arms, then feels the wounds on them. "Oh... So I am... Well, I can't use my magic at the moment anyway, not while there could be other Candles in the warehouse." She looks around more, looking in all the vehicles, underneath any tarps, and up at the rafters. Finally she stops, sighing loudly and dismisses the spell. The wounds on her arms begin to glow green and slowly they close up. "Anyway, the Candle only reacts to spells cast by a Mage, making little stone constructs that resemble gargoyles to attack us with. Normally it's not much more than a nuisance, but for Mages who rely a lot on their spells to defend themselves, it can eventually drain their Mana just from how many gargoyles show up until the candle is extinguished."

"And these Hunters... They nabbed Diana?" You look around, as the stone pebbles begin to turn into a foul smelling liquid, slowly sizzling away.

"Yeah. No more than an hour ago." She goes into more detail on the Hunters as she leads you outside and back to the car.

Hunters are Sleepers that are aware that the Supernatural is real and they seek to protect the normal human beings from all things supernatural (vampires, werewolves, Mages, and all the other things that have yet to be explained). They are a mix of the Men in Black and the X-Files, though some Hunter groups are just like-minded people with a common enemy (for example, one group of Hunters may be out to kill all werewolves because at one point in time they all lost someone to a werewolf attack).

>>37887641

>>
>>37887757
>They do cause Paradox. Plus they can possibly tools similar to (or more powerful than) the Witch Candle to deal with Mages.
fuck.
Okay, we can get around this by using spirits, since they don't cause paradox. Summon some beforehand and bind some to an item or our body to shot fire or something.
>>
>>37887698
Some of their anti-Mage technology is just that: science and cutting-edge technology.

For things like the Witch Candle it's usually some old form of Magic (like Magic from around the time Christ walked the earth) that they have acquired over the years, as the Candles do not care who cast the spell; if a Mage casts a spell, out come the stone gargoyles.
>>
>>37887757
Yep, hell some even seek to "do science" to the supernal. They can be nice guys or pissed off rednecks or anything in between. They're just normal people, mostly, Conspiracy-Tier hunters are borderline supernatural themselves. Catholic hunters who get in bed with the Holy Church can learn to make miracles happen on demand and shit.

Michael quickly glances about him, eyes looking to the left and right to see if an on-coming car is about to hit him. With no cares in those lanes, he looks at the turn lane opposite of him, but that too is devoid of any other vehicles. In fact, the only car on the road is you...

You look in the rear view mirror to see a large black SUV roaring up behind you, tinted black windows hiding whoever is driving the car and devoid of any sort of license plate or other distinguishing marks. You barely have time to curse before you jam your foot to the floor, the engine roaring to life as your tires spin out slightly before throwing you both forward as you try to out-run the car closing behind you.

"What the fuck!?" Elizabeth looks behind her to see the quickly closing SUV, one window rolling down to where a small radial dish sticks out of it, similar in look to a listening device. "Is that a..."

You begin to hear a rather low hum in your ear, like someone left a TV on in the other room on a channel that is nothing but white static noise, and you struggle to keep your focus on the road and not the growing ringing in your ear. You glance over and see Elizabeth struggling to cover her ears as her face curls in pain.

"What the fuck is that," you yell out to her as you struggle to keep the car straight.

"It's a Screamer Pistol," she yells back. "Stops Mages from focusing on casting a spell, can even cause hallucinations if we are left hearing it long enough!"

You quickly begin to swerve and zig-zag though the streets, trying to break a direct line of sight (or in this case, sound) to the car, and the ringing slowly lessens but as the SUV is still on your tail, the Pistol is still aimed in your general direction.

"Take a hard right up ahead," Liz yells out, pointing at the next intersection. You slam on the brakes and whip the wheel to the right as your tires begin to screech, the back end spinning out as you come screaming down the street. You look back and see the SUV struggle to make the turn, gaining more distance on the large, slower automobile.

"Now a left!" You nod in agreement, using the fact that your smaller, lighter, and sportier car is quicker on the turns than the lumbering workhorse vehicle they are driving. Several more odd, sudden turns and you've nearly gained a city block lead on the SUV. Yet all this time you've yet to run into another car, and the lack of police sirens is getting worrisome.

"Call Jemma and Sarah, quickly," you yell to Liz as you continue to evade the SUV. After another couple of quick maneuvers down various side streets and alleyways you lose sight of the large vehicle. Thinking quickly you drive up into a parking structure, up to the second floor and kill the engine, out of sight of the main road and try to remain as silent as possible, while Elizabeth whispers into the phone as she enlightens Jemma on the current situation.

About 30 seconds into your hideout you hear the sound of screeching tires drive past down below. You wait another few minutes before climbing out of the car, slowly walking over to the edge of the parking structure to look out onto the road below.

There's no SUV, and some cars begin to drive by, as though nothing was going wrong.

Slight aside, I'm starting to doze off here, I might call it soon.

Also, I have a NSFW drawing and I know that posting it here directly is against board rules. Any recommendations of where to post it? Maybe an imgur link or something?

Imgur should be fine.

Is that Liz? Damn, she's stacked. Nice work.

It's Liz, during one of their nights of using Life magic to spice things up a bit.

Otherwise, writing.

"Come on, time to get walking." You walk down the parking structure with Elizabeth in tow, finishing up her conversation with Jemma, as you feed the parking meter for your car to not get towed. After that is taken care of, you begin to open a portal to the Shadow World. As soon as you both enter you close the entrance behind you and begin walking through the swampy grasslands to where your apartment complex would be located on the Material World side.

"So this is what the city was like before humans showed up," Elizabeth says, looking around you.

"More or less... Some things from the material world have bleed over," you say, pointing to a large black and metal skyscraper sticking out of the otherwise nature landscape surrounding it. "It's due to humanity's belief or wonder in the building, it makes for a rather quick way to make something from our side 'stick' faster on this side, so to speak."

"So, if we went to the top of the Tower, would we see everything around us?"

"In theory, yes.... Never done it myself, I'd rather not have to climb however many flights of stairs up to the top, as there's no power source for the elevators on this side."

"Hmm... Maybe we'll have to make a date night out of it one of these days," Liz says, slinging her arm around yours.

"Maybe." The rest of the walk goes by rather quietly, most of the spirits you run into being rather peaceful or courteous to your appearance, as your good will certainly seems to be sticking around in their thoughts. You finally reach a rather bland section of the swampy grassland, this one near a small outcropping of tall reeds, and you create another portal to the Material World. You both cross over and step into the parking structure of your apartment complex, and within a couple minutes enter your room.

"Took you long enough," Sarah says, hand holding onto her head as she leans forward on the couch. And she's in one of your suits again.

It's late, and the next post will be the last one for the night.

Writing.

"Better safe than sorry... And I thought I told you to stop wearing my suits? They're tailor made for me, not you."

"But I feel so powerful in one..." She sulks a bit, tugging on the sleeves of the dress shirt a bit. At that, you just sigh, as Jemma rounds the corner carrying a pair of coffee cups for you and Liz to enjoy.

"Ok, any ideeas on how to track down Diana," you ask the other three Mages in the room.

"Well, I reached out to some of my police buddies, they said that a bunch of FBI-type people have made a temporary base of operations out in an old building located near the docks, something about them wanting a source of water to get some larger equipment shipped up the river to their location."

"Larger equipment? Well that doesn't sound good."

"Still," Liz says, grabbing one of the cups. "Sounds like the most likely place of where their base of operations is at."

"Ok, let's try to get an idea of how we can rescue her..." You think back to her warehouse, remembering that she had a tactical van for use back when you rescued Elizabeth. "Hey Liz... Was her tac-van still in the warehouse?"

She thinks about it for a moment before nodding, a grin crossing her face. "Yeah, and unless they see inside the van proper they'll have no clue just how special it is."

"Well then," you look at Jemma, who is already grabbing a duffle bag she brought with her. "Let's suit up people."

> Quest End

6 exp. gained.

I'll be here for a while longer, feel free to ask any questions. Also, don't forget that I have an ask.fm if you are curious about anything and want to ask me outside of a quest thread.

Thanks for running. Sorry not many people turned up. Maybe next time.
>>
>>37892398
It happens.

Honestly if I keep seeing waning interest I'll finish up the quest and end it properly and not leave those who do follow it with an unfinished story.
>>
>>37892471
Well I hope we can avoid that but it's nice that you're willing to give those of us who are still interested a proper ending.
>>
Thread's archived.
>>
>>37892471
It's not so much interest is waning, as the irregular schedule keeps people like me from ralising its live until its too late to join in
>>
>>37892471
Well, I, for one, am still interested. It's the timezone that's my greatest enemy.

I do tweet out when I'm about to go live to give people a bit of a heads up... Should I do that tweet a day before I go live?
>>

>Should I do that tweet a day before I go live?
That would be great. Any sort of long term schedule would help out a lot. I love these threads, but I only got to the last 3 when the thread was archived or on page 10 (like this one)
>>
>>37902362
Fair enough. I have had a pretty hectic schedule the past few weeks and been struggling to set aside time for the quest, hence the rather short warnings before quest start.

I will endeavor to tweet out advanced warnings though.
>>
>>37902708
If you can, try to schedule a specific date at the end of each quest, with the caveat of the schedule being subject to change. If all goes well, just tweet that the session is on schedule. If complications arise, tweet that there's a delay.

Thank you for running! However long these quests last, they've been a blast.
