Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You spent a week doing research on undeath, basketweaving and alchemy. You taught Lathrien the basics of shamanism. You learned that your former tribe has been taken over by a wannabe warlord. After the timeskip, you learned to access the hidden areas of the ruin and you accessed the alchemy lab of the previous owner. The things you found in there were very much alive and left you with rather vivid nightmares. Nonetheless, you defeated them and managed to learn a little about alchemy from the rotting carcasses. The last thing you did was to talk to the old crones about your old tribe, learning of their current fate.

You are Vlad Tepish.

Your Holdings: A renovated ancient Elven ruin. A well hidden and protected cave, now housing liberated human slaves.

Your minions: 37 normal undead (orcish, elven and human skeletons and zombies, 13 armed with bows, rest with crude melee weapons). Undead orcish shaman. Skeletal elk mount. You control 40/50 minions. Your control is absolute.

Your relationships: Lathrien, your apprentice (agreeable), Ragda and Gerda, liberated old ladies of your tribe (friendly(ish)). Bathory, the spirit of your lover housed in her skull (unfriendly). Bound spirit of an elven scout (bound). Bound spirit of a gnoll pyromancer (bound). Bound spirit of an orc demonologist (Bound). Bound spirit of a black dragon (bound). Elven tribe (open diplomacy), Gnoll tribe (allies/treacherous bastards), Human liberated slaves (likely allies).

Your skills, stats, traits: In the pastebin above, along with your available spells and equipment.

Your goals: Find a body for Bathory, achieve immortality, grow your legacy.

You have spent a lot of time to yourself. You have learned and achieved much. You know the basics of how to create a vertebrate body from naught but the base components and magical theories. There is naught that can stand against you in the immidiate vicinity, but that is hardly the excuse to get complacent. Rumors of advanced civilizations in hiding are ever present, and your old tribe had heard of many. That is not taking spiritual dangers into account. There is much land you have not yet explored. Lathrien has made some progress, but still has much to learn. And you still have not visited the liberated slaves you bequeathed your former cave to. As it is always, you have much to do if you are to advance your standing and knowledge.
>Visit elves. You have significant trade capabilities by now, between your knowledge and elven artifacts from the ruin.
>Explore (North- largely mysterious, you've seen mountains in the distance. East- delve deeper into elven lands
>>
>South (entirely unknown, move past gnoll encampment). West (Plains, your old tribe would hunt and gather there commonly.)
>Visit gnolls. They have given much, you have given little in return. Rebellion is plausible.

Let's touch base with the former slaves. We are a benevolent necromanic overlord.

Ask them if they need help with something
I think we should train Lathrien before we visit the elves, then bring him along, and impress them
>>
>>37906729
We've gotten him a rank in shaman magic already with a crit. He's definitely progressed enough to impress him.

And why do you want to bother with the gnolls? They're weak, cowardly, and untrustworthy. We're ahead in our dealings with them right now, excellent time to just cut them off.

>Stay inside. Research, explore the hidden passageways, train Lathrien further.

Alright, then what is exactly that we want to research in such a hurry? If the gnolls are untrustworthy more the reason to check upon them from time to time.
It should be a minute, then we are back to research.

We better be researching the demonology shaman.

Indeed, so it would seem.

You have spent much time in the library, but it is never enough. Secrets, just beyond your reach are ahead in every book. Now that you have found the code in the basketweaving tomes, you feel certain more hidden knowledge lies within the books. You just have to reach out, a little deeper, find the true, worthy knowledge that lies in the darkest depths of the library.

>Study ancient history- you've learned a little about the previous owner of the library. Perhaps you can learn more of the old civilization.
>Study necromancy. You've gone through most tomes on the subject, but perhaps there are some snippets left yet worth knowing.
>Study engineering. You have some tools now. Perhaps you are capable of recreating some of the basic devices.
>Study theology. You have suspicions you've met an ancient god in your dreams. It did not seem friendly. Perhaps you can glean some information about its weaknesses and powers.

You have dreamt of strange places and beings. They have been worrisome indeed. The self-proclaimed god of necromancy worries you greatly. Or perhaps, not so much. It is nonetheless something you should address. There are books aplenty on the religion of the ancient Elven civilization.

Unnatural 20! Great Success!

On the one hand it is unfortunate that you have learned that this god of undeath was well known to the ancient elves. At the same time, you learn that his godhood is not entirely omnipotent. He gains power from followers, from necromancers like you, and as you are the only one you are aware of, you feel safe in guessing that you are in the best possible position to break his control over you.

You also learn of some hints of the nature and worship of the creature. The main worshipers of the god are referred to as the 'dark cousins' of the mountains. Shrines are supposedly found within the depths. Even in the books the reports are unconfirmed and dangerous.

Unnatural 20! Marginal success, the best kind of success!

You direct Lathrien to a long dead elf, one of the dozens you found in the ruin. You feel certain that he has enough experience to raise at least the one.

'Weave the magics, ignore the body, focus on the skull- that is where all the animation comes from.'

'Yes, Vlad Tepish.'

The kid focuses. Hard. He clearly feels some darker pressure, something that you were ever inoculated against, whether through experience or inherited coincidence. You see him go pale, but he refuses to let go. It takes him almost a full minute, but he manages to raise the skeleton from the dead.

You lead Lathrien, the skeleton in tow to the recent battleground between the dragon and the orcs. You have him raise another decomposing body of an orc. It comes easier the second time.

The third is faster yet. He keeps raising undead, until he reaches his limit at thirteen. When he raises the twelfth orc, his control breaks, and the undead move to attack him. You interfere quickly and wrest control of one, two, three orc zombies, until he is left with ten he feels comfortable to control.

The shaman training he's received from you certainly helps. His undead, just like yours are a little intelligent, and you feel he knows enough about spirits to bind one were he to try hard enough on a fresh body.

You also only took the volunteer elves with you, and demanded the entire gnoll pack come with you. Individual per individual elves and gnolls are roughly evenly matched, but elves have a fairly powerful spellcaster to back them up and gnolls have a slight numeric advantage.

Also, elves fucking hate dice, apparently, or vice versa.

Rough estimate leaning towards Bathory.

You pick up the skull of your deceased lover. You've brought it to the library. Perhaps it is a patronizing thing to do, perhaps she will hate it. But you guess that were you in her position you would accept any entertainment available.

You look over fiction books. There are many of dark doom and apocalypse. Many of high magic and adventure. But the ones you find, the ones you care about are of family life, of slow, hot summer afternoons. Of love and comfort. Sure, conflict is there, but you want to give Bathory something warm and nice. Something with a happy ending.

'Hello, Bathory.'
'Vlad. Do you know how slow time runs in here. Do not leave me alone for so long.'
'I am sorry. I have been looking for how to find you a body. I am making progress, but will need to travel before I can do it.'
'Well, what do you want now?'
'I, I have all these books. I thought I could read you one.'
'Oh! I would love that. Will you do the voices?'
'Of course, my love. I will make even that sacrifice for you.'
'Ass.'
'Lady Beldriel never liked the sunset on the white stone terrace. It was a beautiful sight, but she was always on her own, no matter how many servants she had to attend to her needs...'

Hours pass. You know Bathory is listening, because Bathory cannot sleep and would never interrupt a good story. And the story is lovely. The noble lady meets a prince and it all seems so nice and pre-destined, but then a simple farmer catches her eye, and the cavalier turns out to be a true villain. You feel disappointed when you have to stop reading, to make sure you wake up in time tomorrow.

'I need to sleep now, love. Perhaps later I can teach you to read elven, have someone assist you to turn the pages, so you have something to do until I find you a body.'
'Is it going to be that long? And oh please, one more chapter, Vlad! I get so little fun here!

You read her three more chapters before you end up going to sleep. The morning finds you...
>>
>>37909028

It would not take much work to call the homonculus to you. The spirit within it is still bound to you. You hope he has learned how to hunt small creatures in its new form and to enjoy raw meat. The form you made was robust, but it still needs nutrition.

'Lathrien! We leave now. I have some business to attend to en route, it should not take long.'
'Yes, Vlad Tepish.'

As you are leaving the ruin you focus your mind and call for the homonculus. Entranced and enthralled it soon comes to you. You do not feel up to tormenting it by asking it to speak in human tongue, so you dismount, lean down and touch his forehead.

'Are you faring well?'
'Well enough. The rats are no match for me, even if the meat is a little strange. The dog part of me seems to like it nonetheless.'
'Pleased to hear it. I was going for that. Anything strange going on?'
'No more than usual. There are some bigger animals I need to run away from, but they do not dare approach the ruin.'
'Good. Serve well, and perhaps I can give you a proper humanoid body.'
'Honestly, don't know if I want it. Speech would be nice, but being a dog is fun, simple.'
'Happy to hear it.'

Lathrien speaks up.

'That presence... I recognize it. Did you bind the spirit of one of our scouts?'

I wouldn't want to interrupt a deep philosophical conversation, as the dog-elf seemed pretty chill. If we have to visit the elves tomorrow, we do it tomorrow. It's not like we sent out and advanced notice, it's really just on a whim.

You know what a tribe means these days. You knew each of your tribemates before you had to leave, by name and well enough to call friends. Before you betrayed them and they betrayed you in turn.

You let him speak for a while.

When he turns to follow you there are tears in his eyes. Weakness, certainly, but one you can understand.

You travel and you reach the elven tribe by sunset. There is a lot of activity there, more people than the land here could sustain. Visitors, certainly. You recall some of them from when they last marched against you. That was more than a month ago. If they are still here they are certainly imposing. You did not find it strange when marching against orcs- it is normal for a visit between two tribes to last a few weeks, but a month is all but unheard of for you.

>It might be some elven tradition. Ignore it and look for the elder.
>Look for the elder, ask him what's up.
>Approach some of the visiting elves. Ask them why they are still here.
>Look for the rebellious huntress Lathrien mentioned. He seems to care for her and she managed herself better than most elves on the attack on the orcish camp.
>Offer something for trade to the camp at large.

'Lathrien, is it normal that these visitors are still here?'
'It is barely normal that the tribe is still here. We were supposed to find the ruin and then move on.'
'I see. Where do you think the elder would be?'
'Look for stupid shit going down, then look for him in the middle trying to resolve it.'

You fix him with a fierce, but appropriate stare.

'I am well aware. And that is my point. Emotions run high when the ancient empire is discussed among elves. We might even attack enemies we have no chance to beat.'

Soon enough you hear shouting. The elven woman with the strange bow is talking loudly to a younger elf. He says something in a strange dialect, but you think you hear a few terms linked to agriculture. Plowing perhaps. Next thing you see is the horn of wine emptied on his head and an elbow in his face. Soon enough the elder is between the two, trying his best to try to resolve the situation diplomatically.

>Perfect time to jump in. Terrify the young man and strike up a conversation with the young woman and the Elder.

'Grrrrrrr-oki,

You say loudly as you approach the camp. You have always been one for dramatic entrances. There is little gnoll poetry available, truly, they should feel blessed to hear such rare art.

'What are y... What do you want?' The youth says.
'Vlad Tepish. Would you please turn this maggot into a toad, just to improve his lot in life, of course,' the young woman says.
'Melandie, please, Vlad Tepish is an honored guest, do not insult him,' the elder says.
'Were I worried of petty insults, I would not recite gnoll poetry.' You say.
'Indeed you would not, you ripper of souls, you are a monster, corrupting the greatest elves of our generation. I would spit on you, but you would take my spit and use it for black magic' The young man says.

>Teach him his manners. Curse him with a permanent vile stench.

'All magic is black magic, if used for the wrong ends. Pyromancy can burn the innocent, alchemy...'

You get midway through the sentence when you hear Lathrien scream:

'Idiot! You insult Melandie, then you insult Vlad Tepish, when you are not worthy to lick their hands after supper!' You barely have time to register Lathriens apparent new loyalty, before the other young elf shouts:
'You dare!?'

Lathrien, apparently forgotten all his training tackles the young elf to the dirt.

'Lathrien! I will NOT have you fighting my battles.' Melandie says, as she grabs Lathrien by the collar, throws him off the other young elf, and starts kicking the one who apparently insulted her.

'Children! Stop acting like animals of the wild! We are elves, we should not fight for such petty reasons!' The elder says. His words fall on deaf ears.

Some five minutes later the three young elves are exhausted, battered and bruised. You keep out of their business, at least because none of them seem to be trying to permanently harm each other.

Maybe this is how they resolve their differences.

Eventually the offensive young elf scurries off to lick his wounds, and you are left with Melandie and Lathrien looking indignant at one another, and the elder looking sadly upon the whole scene.

'I apologize, Vlad Tepish. Tempers are running high in the camp around now.'

>'What is wrong?'

'He is doing well with my magic. Both shamanism and necromancy. If I am not intruding, however, it does seem something is wrong in the camp. Might I inquire what it is?'
'I fear it concerns you and the ruin. The visiting tribe wants to take it back by force. I demanded we bring in an older diviner to make the decision, but I worry still.'

'I do not respond well to threats. You have been courteous, but if your tribe attacks us I will not hold back.'

'Of course. Nor would I. That is why I hope against hope it does not come to it.'

'Listen, if you wish to visit the ruin, I have no issue with visitors. It will not be comfortable without the training Lathrien has received, but I am willing to compromise.'

'So am I. But I fear many of my people are not. They are fools, they do not know what one man fluent in the ancient arts can achieve. They think defeating you alone would be simple.'

'I see. This seer. What can you tell me about them?'

'She is ancient beyond memory. Even her own. As far as I know she has never been wrong. But, she talks in vague notions. I am not honestly certain if she knows any magic at all.'

'If that is the best you can do, I shall go back to the ruin and prepare to defend myself.'

'I know her rather well. She is no fool, I believe perhaps I can convince her.'

'I suppose there is no hope for trade?'

'Well, it may be dangerous for you to approach the traders in person. I would be happy to do a little trade on the side.'

I do want her to come, but since we seem to be expecting a siege, much to my displeasure as wit and good humor could have solved this before we left the camp, I think all we should do is quietly mention to her that she could keep Lanthrien in a constant state of annoyance if she wanted to.

My reading is that he's crushing on her, and wants to be the manly protector type, except she doesn't want or need that. My worry is that she'll start getting interested in us, when I want to be breeding elves, not half elves.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you there but Elves seem to be arseholes unless they're as old as the Elder. Also have them prepared to attack.

It has taken some time to learn the magic, and Lathrien has had some valuable time to reconnect with his tribe. Valuable for him, certainly, and in a way you can appreciate, but valuable to you also.

'Lathrien, the tribes, do you feel they might attack us.'
'They are waiting for the seer. I doubt they would do anything without her. Then again, you never know. There might be some rash idiots... I KNOW, okay, anyways, there might be some who go against orders. No one specific I met, but might want to be careful.'
'What about you? If your tribe attacked me, where would you stand?'
'Stand? Fuck that, I would not stand, I would run the hell away. I would not fight my own people, but they would have no chance against you. Nor would I.'
'That is honest of you.'
'Yeah, well, it's obvious if you think about it.'
'Do you think we could recruit anyone in due time?'
'Well, you know, like I said, Melandie is an option. She's kind of pissed about earlier with me, but you can sometimes be convincing.'

>Talk to Melandie now
>You have what you've needed. Leave now.
>Pretend to go to sleep nearby. See if anyone ambushes you. Murder them if they do.
>This has become entirely too much trouble. Cast a plague upon the village, let them all die.You can probably hide it from Lathrien for now.

'Yes, Vlad Tepish,'
'And if anything at all goes wrong we get out, and I will train you until I see armed elves march upon our position. But then you better stick to your word and run.'
'Fuck but I hope it doesn't come to that.'
'So do I.'

You approach the young elven woman.

'Melandie, was it?'
'Indeed. You are Vlad Tepish. Thank you for not interfering today. And thank you for sending your zombies to defend us back when the orcs were upon us.'

Huh. She noticed.

'Of course. Worthy allies are irreplaceable.'

Rapport
Your bow, you've made some changes from the elven style of today. Would you mind explaining your thought process to me? I've dabbled a bit in bow making recently, but I've only made recreations of others work, and would like to heard some new ideas on what makes a good bow.

Nat 20! Critical Success! Diplomacy 3 progress [2/3]

You end up spending much more time than you expected talking about crafting, bows, hunting and field-craft. You find yourself enjoying the chat. It has gotten fully dark when you finish your conversation, only the campfire lighting the nearby area.

'And you see, if you curve them like so, you can get a lot more force with a lot less effort.'

She is clever too. It appears some elves are not so bad after all, it is just that the majority ruins it for everybody else. Not enough magical skill to call rain in late autumn, but still a worthy ally.

'You know, the tribe has been less then appreciative of my skills. I know the elder said not to look for volunteers until this ruin bullshit is dealt with, but I am a free woman. I can go where I wish. And I suppose I don't want to hear Lathrien killed himself in a magical explosion or something. I could come along for a while, that'll give them something to think about.'

'Balls.'
'I got them.'

You speak up.

'Elves. Another one of you wishes to join me. I hope you consider what that means of my personality and intentions. Melandie wishes to come, and she is a free woman and shall come with me if that is her wish.'

You try really hard not to say 'deal with it.'

'It is true. You've been freaking retarded. The elder is the only one with half a brain, and he cannot hold back the shitstorm for much longer. So I am getting out of here.' Melandie says.

Well, if there is one thing to be said about diplomacy, it is that you get a lot of criticals out of it.

Nat 20! Diplomacy has advanced to 3!

There is silence. Eyes rise up to you. You feel that some of these elves have only looked at you, not your minions, not the elk skeleton you ride upon, not your magic, but you for the first time.

You can see behind their eyes memories arranging themselves. You are sure that some of them are no longer so sure that you are the monster they feel so comfortable imagining.

And Lathrien has a toothy smile going on. Man, but could he get any more obvious.

'Very well. I cannot speak against it, as you said, Melandie's choices are her own to make.' the Elder says.

'Damn fucking right.' Melandie says, 'Let's get moving then.'

'Some would be worried to travel at night.' You say.

'Some would be shit woodsmen.' Melandie says.

>Go back to the ruin, settle Melandie in either the ruin or nearby more likely.
>Visiting the gnolls next seems to have some support. Is certainly an option.
>It is not like you need anything specific with you. Start exploring.
>Other.
>>
Guys I still say we should visit the gnolls. Trade with them, let them know we may head for another battle soon.

Also we should head by the human settlement.
We've made the ruin a lot more hospitable. Some may like it there much better. And having a few extra hands. Would be nice.

'This is beautiful.' Melandie says when you reach the ruin.
'I am always impressed myself.' You say.
'Don't exactly feel like getting closer if you know what I mean.'
'You can get used to it. You do not have to, of course. The magic keeps most dangerous things quite far away.'
'We will see how it goes.'

And with that concludes Feral Necromancer Quest VIII. You got shit done, both primary and secondary, and so you gain 3 exp. You now have 4 exp total.

You have gained Illusion as a secondary school. To raise it from 0 to I will cost one point of exp, after that it will advance just like any other secondary school of magic.

Sorry any late intfolks, but I am literally falling asleep here.

You have learned Shamanism III
You have learned Control Plants:
With a gesture you can turn terrain to you advantage or against your enemy's. You can have plants grow, move and constrict at a very advanced rate, allowing you to always be in superior terrain, if you are willing to cast the spell.

Combo spell Necromancy II, Shamanism III

Reanimate Land:

You include further ritual in your desecration spell, killing most plants in the area of the ritual and bringing them back to a sort of undeath. In addition to normal desecration bonuses, living and undead creatures you have not designated as allies may take injury and losses as brambles, vines and falling trees work against them.

You have learned Illusion I!

You have learned mirror image! You have 50% chance to avoid physical attacks if you cast the spell as a part of an action.

Bind Spirit III: Transferring spirits between vessels is now much easier for you. Furthermore, you can grant all senses to any spirit within any vessel.

Combo Illusion I, Necromancy I

Illusory army. You can, as a continuous ritual, make your army appear to be double the size. While obviously transparent up close, this might very well have tactical benefits.

Guys something I would like to bring up.
How would you guys feel about transfering all our bound souls. Into undead.
Bind Spirit III: Transferring spirits between vessels is now much easier for you. Furthermore, you can grant all senses to any spirit within any vessel.
Makes it viable, and they now become someone who can attack instead of something we just have to carry around.
We could also transfer Bathory into any female undead, and see if she likes it. Letting her know we plan on creating a body that will be alive as well.
>>
>>37916065
Thank's for running Dead! I look forward to this quest every weekend.
>>
>>37916408
Well I wouldn't do it to all of the souls we have but I would do it for Bathory when she trusts us a little bit more.
>>
>>37916408
Eh maybe the orc. Gnoll hates our guts and the dragon also hates our guts.
>>
>>37916408
>Into undead.
In to undead bodies.
That way they can attack. Instead of just being useful sometimes, when we need information.
Could be interesting to have a dragon in the human body. But we would lose our sword.
>>37916489
They are bound to us, I am sure there are some measures to them attacking us once they get a body. If that is what you fear.
>>37916508
im not sure they can attack. But transfering vessels shouldn't change that they're bound to us. and therefore should be calmed towards us.
And we can give direct orders. To not harm us or anyone who we designate an ally.
