You are Reinhold Eschenwald, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

As per Marianne's orders, you and she are in the midst of crashing Emilio and Karel's little date! Though you're not horribly thrilled about this at all (you'd much rather be with your grandmother who's visiting the castle today), you figure that at the very least you can act as Emilio's wingman and keep him from doing anything to piss Karel off too badly.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

Sitting right next to you, Marianne's in the middle of jotting down some kind of list. It's probably best not to bother right now lest she snap at you for being nosy.

So instead, you shift your gaze to the other side of the carriage where Karel and Emilio are sitting. The Prince's attention is focused on the scenery outside his window, while Karel is fidgeting in her seat with an embarrassed expression on her face. It's not quite a smile but not quite a frown... to be honest, you're not really sure how she's feeling about this current situation.

But regardless, maybe talking to her will help her calm down some.

"Hey Karel," you call out.
"Huhwha!?" Karel snaps to attention, nearly hitting her head against the back of her seat.
"Uh, sorry," you laugh. "You okay?"
"...yeah," she sighs. "You just spooked me, that's all."

"So, uh..." she tugs at the end of her dress, "you wanted something?"
"Nothing big," you reply, "I just wanted to know if there was some place that you wanted to check out first when we reach the city. Me and Marianne are familiar with the area, so at the very least we might be able to direct you to where you'd like to go."
"...oh," Karel nods. "Yeah, that makes sense."

Karel slumps down in her seat and lets out a long sigh.

"I've been here for over a month now and I've never even bothered to so much as leave the castle until just now," Karel says, shaking her head. "Such a freaking waste..."

"Well you'll have plenty of time to get to know the city now if you so choose," Marianne says to her. "I know the city better than Reinhold does, but either of us would be a suitable guide for the two of you."
"Umm, thanks," Karel nods, a faint smile on her face.
"Back to my question," you say, "was there anywhere in particular that you wanted to check out?"
"...oh yeah," she sighs. "Ummm..."

Karel glances at Emilio, who's still absentmindedly gazing out the window.

"I dunno, maybe we could check out a weapon store..." Karel mumbles. "Emilio likes that stuff, and I wouldn't mind seeing what kind of swords the blacksmiths over here make."
"Oh," you nod. "I know a decent enough store for that stuff..."
"You do?" her eyes light up.
"I think so, at least," you shrug. "I mean, I haven't actually bought anything there myself since I've only actually used two swords in my entire life but what I saw of their craftsmanship seemed good."
"Cool," she smiles. "I'm pretty attached to my own sword," she glances at the one that's handing from her belt, "but looking at new stuff's always fun."
"Oh, so you're into windowshopping?" Marianne asks. "Then perhaps I could direct you to-"
"N- not for dresses or anything like that!" Karel stammers, her face suddenly turning red. "Just... y'know..."
"I see."

Marianne definitely looks disappointed to hear that.

"Okay, weapons," you say, clearing your throat. "Anything else you wanted to check out?"
"Maybe a place with magic books?" Karel asks. "The library's selection is pretty great and all but I's like to maybe learn something more... I dunno, unique?"
"I can definitely help with that," Marianne replies with a warm smile. "My favorite bookstore carries plenty of magic-related books, and Reinhold here even purchased Luciana a few grimoires from there a short while back," she says, happy to actually be of help here.
"Cool," Karel nods.
"Just don't do like I did and try to mess around with new spells on your own," you say. "Last time I did that, it almost blew up in my face."
"...well it's not like I intended to try and learn spells without Emilio guiding me," Karel replies, blushing slightly. "That's kind of our thing to do together."

The way Karel's smiling right now is just adorable. You kind of want to smack Emilio for missing out on seeing her like this.

So far we've just been giving her a hard time over the decision, but at this point there's no real way to go back on where we are now.. so the only other solution is to try and help Mari not make this all blow up in her face by talking her through the optimal approach.

Her immediate attempt was to try and get Karel to go dress-browsing. Plus she's stubborn and never likes to join in on things that aren't within her foray of interests. In fact, the only other person as stubborn about doing things she's not comfortable with is ironically Karel, and she's constantly being forced to do them anyway.

For that matter, Mari herself doesn't seem to realize what her crashing the date is doing, even now. I'm skeptical as to how aware she is of the situation she's put herself in.

Casually, you reach into your breast pocket and pull out your sketchbook, then tear out a piece of paper and crumple it up into a ball as discreetly as you can.

And then you toss it across the carriage car at Emilio.

It his him right in the top of his head, and he wordlessly snaps his head around to see what just happened... and then notices your finger pointing at the still-blushing Karel.

And the smile on his own face grows wider and wider.

"So..." you clear your throat, "...what kind of swords do you two prefer?" you ask.
"Really?" Marianne glances at you.
"What?" you shrug. "It's a shared interest between the two of them," you say, pointing at the Prince and Princess who are sitting across from you. "...and me, though I'm not much of a collector."
"Oh," she sighs. "Never mind, carry on then."

With an understanding nod and a disinterested look on her face, Marianne looks out the window

"I'd find it hard to use anything too far from what I have here..." you pat the scabbard of your own sword. "Fortunately, my Grandma's sword was pretty similar in weight and handling when I was using hers."
"Huh," Emilio nods. "Luciana said you've had that sword since you were nine, so it's pretty much just been those two that you've used for your entire life?"
"Yup," you nod. "I started learning with this one here and it's served me well ever since."

Oh Christ, she thinks that "WUT SORD U LIEK?" is a question we ask everybody, regardless of their interest.
>>
>>37942781
Well that's because Reinhold is obviously a subhuman creature with no tact. Clearly Karel should be talking about pretty dresses.

Marianne shouldn't be trying to partake in the damn conversation it's theirs to have not hers. I don't care if she wants to be included, this is for them.

It'll be amusing to see if our convo gambit works as planned, and thus proving that as idiotic as we are, we still have better people skills than she does because we let people be who they are.
>>
>>37942725
I think our secondary objective for this date is to distract Marianne into having a good time while keeping her away from Emilio and Karel's personal date time.
>>
>>37942962

Mari's real goal isn't to help Karel and Emilo with a date.

Her likely real goal is to go out and have fun with her cousin.

Who she doesn't know too well and wants to know better.

Too bad both of them are not really too good with people.
>>
>>37942922
It helps that we know Karel personally pretty much better than anyone.
>>
>>37942725

Catching that the conversation's somehow shifted to you as the subject, you quickly move to turn it around.

"What about you, Karel?" you ask. "What kind of sword did you learn with?"
"Rapiers, pretty much," Karel replies. "I started with a standard-type practice sword while I was being taught by Leopold, but right before he went and got knighted he suggested that I settle on a type that suited me."
"And you chose rapiers?" Emilio asks.
"Pretty much," she shrugs. "I've got girl arms and all so I went with something that I could actually manage without too much trouble."

You want to say something about Sylvie and Rana being two of the strongest people you know physically, but that would just serve to derail the conversation again.

"So that's your favorite type of sword?" you ask.
"I dunno if it's my -favorite-," Karel replies, "but it's served me pretty well so far. Maybe I would've tried switching to a saber like that one asshole uses, but my Mom got me this Flamberge so that's what I'm gonna stick with for now."
"Huh," Emilio nods knowingly.
"What about you?" Karel pokes him in his forehead.
"Wha?"
"Your favorite sword."
"...I dunno..."

While Emilio meanders off into a long description of the many swords in his personal collection that he's fond of, you slip out of the conversation and just watch on as Karel and Emilio chat amongst themselves. This is the first time you've seen Karel really relax since three days ago, and it's a definitely a relief for you to know that she's able to do so since her secret's been exposed.

This is the first time you've seen Karel really relax since three days ago, and it's a definitely a relief for you to know that she's able to do so since her secret's been exposed.

The pleasant sword talk continues until the carriage pulls into town and comes to a stop, upon which time Marianne pats you on the shoulder almost as if saying "good job" to you. And you must admit, you're pretty proud of your success in getting the two of them to loosen up so early in your outing.

You're the first one out of the carriage, and you help Marianne out. She's followed by Emilio, who does the same for Karel.

Yup, this is just cute to watch. It's a damned shame that Luciana isn't here to see her little brother actually successfully interacting with a girl without wimping out...

"You were going to stop by the weapon store... or whatever it's called, right?" Marianne asks.
"Umm, yeah," Emilio nods.
"Then I believe it best for Reinhold to lead the way..."

The princess pushes you along...

"Hey Marie," you call out, motioning for her to move closer to you.
"...what is it?" Marianne sighs. "If this is about giving them their space, I'm not so ignorant as to fail to do so."
"It's not that," you shake your head.

Well, maybe partially about that.

"I just wanted to know what you thought about a couple of things," you say.
"Like what?" Marianne asks with a most skeptical look in her eyes.
"Like Inaba," you reply.

Suddenly, the Princess's expression gets a lot softer.

"...I think she's absolutely adorable, if that's what you're asking about," Marianne says.

Of course she does.

"Yeah, I think she's cute too," you laugh. "But, uh... how do you think you-know-who will react when he finds out that the rabbit he picked out fir his daughter turns out to have ascended?" you ask.

Best to avoid saying certain names while you're out here, just in case.

"Hmm..." Marianne looks off into the distance. "To be perfectly honest with you, I'm half-convinced that he was expecting this to happen."
"Oh?"
"That man is always scheming," she says with a shrug. "and I wouldn't put it past him to have planned on it."

She does have a point there.

Seeing who ends up with who on the different routes is part of the fun.

"Uh, thanks," you say, laughing nervously.

You really weren't expecting such a... stunned reaction. And both Karel and Emilio are now staring at the two of you.

It's preferable to have multiple options in the event of Reinhold stealing your waifu, that way you can chase the one he didn't pick.
It's worse for characters who threw all their stock at either Rein or one of the girls, that way if he gets your waifu or someone else gets Rein, your left alone for all eternity.
The outlier to this system is Nico on the Melanie route, who would would be happy Rein or one of the girls and still ends up by herself, because sometimes the system doesn't work.

More than a little bit embarrassed about her little outburst, Marianne keeps quiet and ignores your attempts to talk to her for the rest of the duration of your walk to the weapons store. But at least it isn't too far a walk to get there.

"So this is the place?" Karel asks as the four of you stop in front of a large building.
"Yup," you nod. "As you may be able to tell from the windows," you say, pointing at the variety of swords and other objects that are in full display in the large picture windows of the store.

"Welcome, ladies!" a middle-aged man exclaims as you enter the building. "Two lovely young girls and two strapping young men... I take it this is a double date?"
"No," Marianne sighs. "Just a single date with some friends and family tagging along," she says, pointing herself and you.
"Oh, I get it!" he laughs. "Making sure that this rugged-looking lad here doesn't try anything shady?"
"Something like that," Marianne says with a smirk.

You're pretty amused by this and Marianne even moreso, but Karel and Emilio seem more embarrassed than anything.

"So how can I help you?" the man asks.
"We're just looking around," Karel mumbles. "Since, uh..." she glances at the sword hanging at her hip.
"Ah!" he claps his hands together. "So you're a swordswoman!"
"Yeah," Emilio says. "She's really good, too."
"C'mon, man..." she mumbles.

While Karel and Emilio converse with the shop owner, you notice Marianne wandering off to the rear of the store.

The Princess folds her fingers around the handle of the halberd, then lifts it from the rack that it had been hanging on.

"......!!" she gasps, darting her gaze left and right to make sure that nobody's watching her.

But naturally, you stay well within her blind spot.

After letting out a long sigh of relief, Marianne twirls the massive axe around in her fingers until the long handle is nestled underneath her arm, then thrusts the blade forward as if attacking some imaginary foe. You're -quite- impressed with both the form in which she twirls the heavy polearm around in her slender hands and the fact that she's able to so easily swing around a weapon that's easily taller than she is with little visible effort on her part.

Maybe she really does take after her father after all?

You glance at the halberd that Marianne just put away.

"You know," you say, "I could carry that thing for you if you wanted to buy it."
"Wha-" Marianne's face goes red.
"for your father, I mean," you throw up your hands. "I'm sure he'd like it... doesn't he have a collection of stuff like that?"
"...yes, he does," Marianne sighs, "but I won't be adding to it. Not now, anyways."

Maybe that means that she wants to come back later?

"...anyways, it looks like those two are finishing up over there," Marianne points to the front of the store where Karel and Emilio are standing. "Perhaps we could leave this place already..."

"We were indeed," Marianne replies. "So, well..."
"Umm, yeah."

Karel and Emilio turn to the store owner and bid him farewell, and then the four of you make your way back outside.

"You guys hungry yet?" you ask.
"Nah," Karel shakes her head. "What about you?" she turns to Emilio.
"I can go a little bit longer," the Prince replies. "And I already went to the only place that I really wanted to, so if there was anywhere that the three of you wanted to go...?"
"Actually," Marianne speaks up, "I'd like to stop by a clothing store if you didn't mind..."

Karel backs away from her cousin.

"H- hey," Karel stammers, "I said that I wasn't-"
"I wasn't going to try and dress -you- up in a cute dress," Marianne replies, "but I would like to get INaba something to wear."

Before long, you reach a store which you recognize as the one where the dresses that the girls wore to Emilio's birthday party were purchased. You feel really out of place just looking at this place, and you can tell that the others do as well but you still follow the Princess inside all the same.

"Okay!" Marianne claps her hands together. "Here we are!" she says, an uncharacteristically cheerful smile on her face.
"So we're gonna get a dress for Inaba here?" Karel asks.
"Yes..." she nods.

And then she takes Karel's hand.

"...huh?" Karel looks down at her hand and then up at her cousin. "Uh..."
"Before we do that," Marianne says, "there's something very important that I was asked to assist with."

Karel's eyes grow wide.

"H- hey, I -said- I wasn't gonna get thrown into any more stupid fancy dresses!" Karel shouts.
"IT's nothing of that sort," Marianne replies. "Don't worry, this is for -your- benefit as opposed to anyone else's."

And without listening to another word of complaint, Marianne forcibly pulls Karel along with her towards a counter. Both you and Emilio are left stunned.

"What the hell!?" Karel asks, angrily glaring at Marianne. "IF this ain't about a dress, then why the hell-"

Marianne holds up a finger and even Karel is surprised that she goes quiet.

"Excuse me," Marianne turns to the attendant, "This is my first time coming here with my cousin here," she rests a hand on Karel's shoulder.
"Oh, really?" the attendant turns to Karel with an inviting smile. "Well we have the highest-quality assortment of garments in the entire city!"
"...that's nice..." Karel mumbles.
"Did you have anything particular in mind?" she asks.
"Actually, yes," Marianne replies. "Alysse here is a bit of a tomboy, you see... and it's come to my attention that she's never been properly fitted for undergarments."
"Oh?"

The attendant looks absolutely shocked.

"I can't believe how uncomfortable you must be!" the attendant gasps.
"...I'm fine wearin' what I've been wearin' all my life," Karel says, so-"

Marianne catches her wrist before she can get away.

"I absolutely insist," Marianne says in a most matronly tone. "This is for -your- own good."

Marianne turns back to the attendant.

"I believe she has the same measurements as I do," Marianne says as she hands her a slip of paper, "so if you'd like to start from there?"
"Oh," the attendant looks over the paper, "this would definitely be of a great help! And It'll save us a lot of time as well..." she says as she takes KArel's hand pulls her towards a dressing room.
"H- hey!" KArel tries to pull away. "I just said that I didn't want to-"
"Don't worry," she replies with a knowing smile, "Even if the more 'feminine' garments aren't to your liking, I'm sure that we have -something- that you'll be satisfied with."

Marianne waves goodbye to her cousin as she's pulled behind the curtains.

To reply to my own post, the chain also has to be a few different colors along with the pendants. Marianne's obsession with clothing leads me to believe that she would want the accessory to be as useful in clothing co-ordination as possible, and if necessary could also be integrated seamlessly with other jewelry. (Ie, can be turned into a pendant, the charms could be attached to a necklace she is already wearing, etc.)

We could say it would be in honor of her father, and it would do us good to have the fragment halberd as a last ditch defense for her if needed.

A few moments later, Karel's been stripped down to her underwear- a pair of tight shorts and...

"Wrappings!?" The attendant gasps in disgust. "I can't believe that you'd actually be happy with-"
"This's how I do it!" KArel shouts back. "And I'm happy with this so if you don't mind, I'd like to-"

Before Karel's able to grab her dress, it's pulled out of reach.

"Absolutely not," the attendant says in a stern tone of voice. "We're going to get you looking like a proper lady and that's that."

UNable to do anything in response, the nearly naked Karel simply tries her best to shield herself from the draft that results from the attendant leaving the dressing room.

With her clothes in tow.

"Fuckin' hell..." Karel growls.

so, you were typing that up when somebody came to bother you

no wonder you wanted him dead.
>>

The woman returns shortly thereafter, her arms filled with what may as well be torture instruments as far as Karel is concerned. Bras, bustiers, and everything in between, Karel is forced to endure support garment after support garment. Filled with shame and regret, for the first time in her entire life Karel finds herself actually cursing the fact that she's a girl.

The simple wrappings were so much easier to deal with, and THOSE didn't come with being molested by a complete stranger. A little bit of discomfort was more than worth that, as far as Karel is concerned.

But after twenty agonizing minutes of repeatedly getting dressed and stripped, dressed and stripped, the long gauntlet comes to a close.

"...well, Miss Alysse?" the attendant asks in a cheerful voice that just makes KArel want to punch her even more. "Have you settled on a type that you'd like? Though I have to say, you looked lovely in all of them..."
"None of 'em," Karel growls. "Now gimme back my clothes so I can get the hell out of here."
"I'm afraid I can't do that," she shakes her head. "Your cousin was -quite- adamant on you not leaving this dressing room without choosing at least one type of brassiere... and considering that she's the one currently holding onto the dress that you wore into this store, I don't think you'll be getting it back until you do as she wishes."

Shame and regret.

Shame and regret.

Doing her best to push those emotions into the back of her mind (and failing miserably), Karel rummages through the pile of underwear on the floor until she finds the one type that she felt the least embarrassed to wear.

"Here," Karel says, shoving it in the attendant's face. "I'll take -this-."
"...the sportsbra?" she looks extremely disappointed. "Surely you could choose something more..."
"No," she snaps at her. "No frilly shit, no fancy shit. If I -have- to pick something then I'll go with that."
"...fine," she sighs. "I'll fetch an assortment of these, then... did you have a color in mind?"
"Blue or gray or whatever, I don't care," Karel mumbles. "Just hurry up and get them so I can put my fuckin' clothes back on."
"Very well," she says, tossing Karel back the one that she just threw at the woman. "You can go ahead and wear that one out, and I'll get you some matching panties..."

As the attendant leaves her alone in the dressing room, the only thing running through Karel's mind is that she's so embarrassed that she could just die.

Okay, that's it for tonight's thread. It was a lot of fun, and I thank all of you for that.

With any luck, I'll be able to get to the end of this excursion in the next thread, which I'll be running on Monday night.

Christ man do you ever sleep?

Anyway thanks it was a fun thread

Did Mari have this planned all along?
She wanted that halberd didn't she?
How skilled is Mari with axes?
Did Karel/Elmo alone time go well?

There's a question. Is there any chance that girl will find some happiness if it doesn't involve our initiative?

Because that would be kind of bullshit after we've tried to stop that happening at every possible opertunity.

I plan on doing just that after I finish writing this post.

>Did Mari have this planned all along?
The underwear thing? Yes. And your suggestion to find something for Inaba to wear gave her the perfect excuse to get Karel into the store.
Not to say that she doesn't want to actually get something for Inaba, of course. Because she most definitely does.

>She wanted that halberd didn't she?
What do you think?

>How skilled is Mari with axes?
Not very.

>Did Karel/Elmo alone time go well?
It certianly did.

>>37947883
>You your waifu slept with the you from another timeline would you consider that cheating?
No?

>>37947902
>Why is being karel suffering? Is it because sylvie has has become such a non-entity at this point that the universe needs a new punching bag?
It is simply her turn to suffer.

>>37947908

I had to deal with some bullshit. I came back once it was done.

>>37947921
>There's a question. Is there any chance that girl will find some happiness if it doesn't involve our initiative?
Yes, but said happiness will have nothing to do with you.
because you treated her so horribly

>>37947928
>If you waifu slept you from the same timeline but at an earlier or later point would you be ok with it?
Since it's still me, yes.

>>37947950
>You're not actually going to let pushy marie ruin the date are you?
>Because that would be kind of bullshit after we've tried to stop that happening at every possible opertunity
The only thing she's actually done to make either of them mad was the underwear thing, and that was "for Karel's own good."

And now I sleep. Thanks for playing!
