~

A primordial and profound silence falls over you and your group. The sky has darkened, and no celestial bodies hang over head. Only a bizarre and unearthly sliver of dim crimson light hangs on the edge of the horizon. Its presence is solid yet subtle at the same time, as if making pretenses to bear witness to tonight’s events.

You slowly pace back and forth with sword drawn out. The warden has left you to stew in your unease. What seems like hours go by in relative silence, your group ever vigilant for incoming threats. Every ambient sound only serves to reinvigorate the tension.

Your thoughts teeter between wanting something to happen and at the same time not. You are the leader, you must keep a strong front, even if you are just maintaining a façade. There is no one you can rely on for this task, only your own body, and your own mind. But not your own mind, your own mind is full of doubt, you must act, act.

But there’s nothing to act on, nothing amiss on the outside. You must look in!

You whip your body to look back at your group and there you find what you are looking for. Two figures sit with their heads buried in their crossed arms. Both adorned in the exact same blue robes, torn at the hem. Two Erins.

The warden counted on you being distracted, counted on you focusing on outside threats so that she may harm one of your own without you noticing. You must act. Erin has saved your life before, if she let fear paralyze her, you wouldn’t be here. You owe her the same. Your hand tightens around your sword hilt. You must oust the fake.

You relax the tension around your sword, and your thoughts cease their racing, at least momentarily.

You march your way over to the two of them immediately, fully intending to sort this out.

“Wake up.” You order coldly, attracting the attention of your whole group.

The two Erins stir in a similar fashion and raise their piercing blue eyes to greet your voice. The other members of your group raise their guard, finally seeing what you see.

In the dim red light, there are absolutely no differences between the two girls, they even react the same to each other, scrambling to stand and increase the distance between each other.

“Don’t move.” Your voice is clear and cutting as the sword you raise to threaten the two of them.

They both freeze where they’re standing, but a subtle detail catches your eye. The Erin that’s on your left side shows clear fear in her face.

Your thoughts seize around that small detail. If she was the real Erin, she’d have nothing to fear. You don’t know what she’s capable of. You must act, and act quickly to protect your party. You are not afraid.

This Erin messed up, this Erin is clearly the fake.

The urge to act is stronger than it was before, almost uncontrollable. You raise your sword in the air shakily.

You are not afraid.

The one without fear is the fake. This realm is about misdirection. The guardian wants you to kill your people with your own hands. Who wouldn't be afraid with a sword that can cut anything pointed at them? A magical fake that's who.
>>
>>37957701
>Do nothing. So what? We have two Erins now. See can take more time to figure this out, there's no urgency.
>>
>>37957760
Slow down there. If this place is really about misdirection, would the misdirection be that shallow?
Something is wrong beyond the two Erins.

Your sword hangs in the air like a branch in the breeze. Muffled sounds ring in your ears, but all your focus is on the two terrified blue eyes in front of you.

“ED, STOP!” Autumn shoves your hands down causing you to almost drop your sword on the ground.

Your blood surges in your head, beating quickly, loudly. You raise a hand to massage your forehead. “Cast an ice spell.” You murmur with eyes clenched shut.

Nothing.

You split your eyes open at the silence. “Both of you cast an ice spell, right now.” You bark your orders like a tyrant.

Finally the Erin to your right speaks up quietly. “If you all could give me some room, I don’t want my spell to hurt you accidently.”

Reasonable enough. You and your group take a few steps back from the two Erins, but you’re sure to keep your eyes glaring at the Erin you suspect.

The Erin to your right begins making hand movements that you’ve never seen before, and before you can react she lunges at the Erin you had your eyes focused on.

Her mouth bare unhuman teeth that bite into the other Erin’s arm.

The real Erin screams a primal and chilling scream of pain.

Swiftly, Autumn jumps in and shoves her metal hands in the assailants mouth, and with absolute force, tears it from Erin’s arm and shoves it onto the ground.

Autumn unleashes a flurry of heavy blows on the assailant which screams in Erin’s voice. “HELP ME, ED! HAHAHAHAHA. HELP ME! HAHA” Until it is finally silenced.

Autumn’s assault sloughed off large chunks of the creatures flesh, revealing it for what it truly is. The inhuman fiend stares at you with its lifeless eyes, somehow mocking you from death. Its body framed after Erin’s shape.

Cecilia and Autumn see to Erin’s bleeding wound.

Your thoughts race anew.

You are at fault for this. If you had only acted Erin would be safe. You will not make the same mistake again. You slow your breathing down and return to watching the surroundings.

They trust you as their leader, and because of that you must be quick in your actions. Your hands shake madly as you reposition your sword. The night is not through, and the warden surely still has more planned for you.

You focus your mind to one simple sentence.

>”I am not afraid.”

"I am afraid. I am terrified."
The warden is fucking with us according to how she knows Ed to be. We have to admit our fear or else we will be owned by it.

Admitting fear means she'll exploit it even more. We need to think things through, not turn into a gibbering wreck.
>>
>>37958848
No. She wants us to resist our fear because she knows that's our nature. I swear to you guys, if we don't do this we WILL end up killing someone with our own hands.

Auri is it a possibility that the tea she gave us could still be fucking with us?
>>
>>37958898
Fucking hell anon I figured right which one was which and got talked down. Erin got a chunk ripped out of my arm. She's using our instincts against us. Thinking things through is resisting fear, Giving in makes us like that archer girl, beaten and willing to be her bitch.
>>
>>37958898
That's absolutely a possibility.

I'll hold off on tallying the votes for a bit. This is one of the most important decisions you'll make in this quest.

I'm not saying give into our fear, but admit that we are afraid. The more we fight it the more we want to "act"
"You must look in!" Auri wrote that for us, not for Ed.

“I will be wise in my actions.”

It was unwise to hesitate, it was unwise not to act immediately. You are not afraid.

The crimson sky seems to grow a shade darker. The flowers bloom around you to spectate your night and the silence is finally broken by the mysterious string music, playing a melancholy and slow tune.

Your hands still shake harder, now fueled with anger at the audacity the warden has displayed. Erin lies unconscious. Her body shivers in her troubled sleep. You will not make the same mistake. If only Autumn had not stopped you, things would be different.

Your silent vigil continues for hours with nothing for silence for you. Neither Vi nor Autumn come up to speak to, choosing only to speak to one another in huddled whispers. The dawn will come soon, you just have to lead them for a few more hours at the most.

“Hey Ed.” The soft voice causes you to flinch and turn to your side in a hurry.

Only Cecilia stands there brazenly as if she were just a spectator tonight’s events. Her pale green sundress is illuminated by the sky’s crimson light.

You wonder how she managed to sneak up on you.

And then, again something catches your eye that sets your blood cold.

Another Cecilia gently petting the sleeping pup in her lap, sits next to the rest of your group. She turns to you and a look of horror comes on her face from the sight in front of you.

Now you know how this Cecilia snuck up on you, but you will not make the same mistake again.

“You don’t have to blame yourself just because you’re our leader, Ed. Don’t you remember Talrith and…” Her words go mute in your ears.

You are not afraid.

Her words matter for nothing, they have no sound. All there is the warm blood pouring onto your shaking hands, you twist and twist to kill the fiend.

The fiend’s eyes go wide in shock, but soon lose their light. The light weight of her body crumples to the floor, and slides off your sword.

Your heart beats wildly in your body and you feel joy in the fact that you kept your party safe.

“HAHAHAHAHA.”

The real Cecilia cackles madly in front of you. You kept her safe right?

She runs up to an approaching figure. “Can I keep this to eat?” She eagerly asks the smiling warden.

The warden gently rubs the side of her head. “Of course.”

The warden approaches you with the same gentle smile that she had earlier today.

Your chest sinks at the realization of what you knew all along. You charge madly at the warden with your sword.

She deftly dodges and then disarms you with her curved blade. Hugoth’s sword falls feebly to the ground as you collapse to your knees as well.

She gently embraces you into her chest. “Oh, Ed.” She sympathetically rubs your hair. “You made it too easy.”

That's where I'm going to end it for tonight, for obvious reasons. I'd like to thank everyone that played. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to post them in the thread and I will do my best to respond.

If not, then I wish you a good day/night, and hope to see you again next time.

Quest over we lose.
>>
>>37960274
Or bad end at the least.

Hey Auri you said that your new quest was easier right?
>>
>>37960231
You're very welcome.
>>37960274
I suppose that's up to you guys, there's still some quest to go.
>>37960322
Yes I did say that in fact.
>>
>>37960322
No I'm pretty sure we're ending up like that guy in the compost pile.

Twisting the nature of wise to foolishness, means we couldn't have won. If we admitted fear which was still a retarded move she'd have just used it to paralyze us. Once we entered the realm we lost.
>>
>>37960322
Well, in a way, we just got the bad end. At least that's how I feel about it.
>>
>>37960394
Your fear wasn't entirely naturally formed at that point. Identifying it would have had much different results.
>>
>>37960394
I doubt that's true.
>>37960442
Well, it was only one person who died. We still have the rest of the team, as little of a consolation that is.
>>
>>37960500
She ahs us now. Quest is done. It's been made blatantly clear we can't beat her.

>>37960458
Yeah we got our drink spiked or magiced. Panicking about it , "being terrified" Would just make it worse. The human heart can only beat so fast and we were already at peak levels. If we couldn't calm down through focusing we wouldn't be able to at all, at least until it got out of our system.
>>
>>37960575
No dude, that scenario had an out, just because it wasnt your choice don't make it seem like her dying was destined to happen.

Anyway, maybe we could finish off the quest becoming her knight or something, I wouldn't mind that.
>>
>>37960657
>implying we won't get composted as soon as she's done toying with us.

But seriously if that was an out, it was freaking retarded. Whatever, this qquest is voer anyways. Next thread will be fae bitch gloating while we bow and scrape until she decides to off us.
>>
>>37960705
I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't the case. Given how accurate you've been at calling things.
Regardless, I agree with you that this quest is over next thread.
I'm out see you next time, Auri.
>>
>>37960799
You've been just as wrong. I called which Erin was fake and you talked me off it. Given both Our batting averages, coupled with he fact we get no saving throws against her and the fact she can puppet our friends with ease. We're fucked. This is Miasma quest in the arena all over again.
>>
>>37960923
Fair enough, man. W/e lets cut our losses and lets try to end this one in a way that you want.
>>
>>37961044
>Fair enough, man. W/e lets cut our losses and lets try to end this one in a way that you want.
Not how I want it at all. Just looking at it's progression, call me a defeatist if you like but we can't win this.
>>
>>37961136
Not saying go for a win. You want to kill Vi in a brutal manor? Done. Want to have a duel with Autumn? I'll vote for it. All I want is the chance to become the warden's knight and I'll roll with you for the rest. Like I said, cut your losses.
>>
>>37961214
>Implying we get any votes when she can puppet us all to her whims.
>Implying she'll not compost us after she breaks into the smallest pieces imaginable
>Implying we'll get anything approaching not worst possible end.
>>
>>37961250
W/e let's end it at this. Just don't rule it out until it happens.
