The castle's training courtyard has cleared, but has attracted quite a scene.

Dozens of knights, fighters, warriors, mages, scholars, line the courtyard. It's almost like a miniature circus has sprung up in the training yard of the castle. Only in this case, the animals are watching the humans.

"Okay, I need you to hold your arms out, like so." Lynneth gently instructs Louise, the tiny pint-sized hero, into assuming a battle stance that would seem extremely dumb to use in a normal fight.

"Breathe gently, concentrate on the feeling in your hands." She presses harshly under Louise's ribcage. She seems to hate the discomfort, but puts up with it through teary eyes.

You are Jack Albator, cunning hero, captain of the skies, and soon to be trainee witch, you're guessing? It's getting kind of confusing for you. Today you learned Emblem magic, which seems to be the ability to throw water at things. Now, you're next in line to learn whatever the heck Lynneth is doing to Louise over here. Maybe teaching her to be a dancer? That's at least how it looks like to you.

"Jack, you watch too, you're going to be doing this next." Lynneth seems to snap up at you.
"Aye".

Gently, she brings Louise's arms down to be level with her collarbone. Lyn instructs her to inhale sharply while she does so.
Very faintly, but enough for everyone to notice, there's a flash of brilliant light that seems to leap from Louise's hands to Lynneth. It reminds you of a bolt of static after handling a fluffy coat, in a way.

Louise shrieks and falls backwards into Lyn's grasp. The other spectators gasp and excitedly chatter amongst themselves after the display.
Except Louise, she seems to be gripping Lyn as tightly as she can manage.

"There, there. It's okay." Lyn puts the secret art of head petting to use trying to calm Louise down.

>This looks boring, lets go find someone else to bother.
>Okay! My turn!

Lyn picks Louise up and hands her to Yuuki, who continues to hug her while she sobs.

Yuuki disappears into the crowd carrying Louise, while Lyn approaches you.
"She has a lot of growing up to do, but I have faith in her." She smiles.
"Aye. So, Gonna show me how to levitate? Or maybe fly on a broom?"

She doesn't laugh, but that doesn't seem to be her style anyway. She leads you to the center of the training yard and turns to you.

"Okay, Jack. This is going to be much harder for you than it was for her."
"Er, Really?"

"Oh yes." She says, deadpan. "Many times harder for you in fact. Which means you're going to have to work that much harder."
"Err. So whar do I-"

Before you can finish that, she lunges over and punches you right below the ribcage.
For an old hag, she sure does punch harder than any singular person you've met so far here.

"THE HELL?" You jump backwards.
"Shhh, listen." She stops, completely ignoring the fact she just punched a hero with the strength of a titan and feels no repercussions.

Your heart, you can feel it pounding in your chest with the strength of an entire battalion of cannons. It almost feels like your very flesh is constricting its powerful movement.
"What the-"

"That" She begins, "Is a boost for you so you can get the basics. Eventually you'll have to do that on your own." She crosses her arms.

"So, lets begin."

This is hard.
You're being moved around like a ragdoll, occasionally being punched with what feels like a cannonball, having to concentrate on vague sensations in the edges of your body.

You're not built for this sort of thing.
Why can't you just sword and shoot things and call it a day?

You work and work for what feels like an hour. Most of the spectators have left, and at the end of that hour you're given the same test Lyn gave to Louise.

She grabs and pulls at your arms, trying to put you into proper 'form' as she calls it. And at the end, your mettle is tested.

From your hands, leaps a single multicolored spark. Barely bright enough to even notice, you would have mistaken it for static if you hadn't already seen Louise do a much more impressive display.

"That's enough for one day." Lyn says, stretching her arms, "You need to practice every day, and you'll have it in no time."

"Have WHAT?" You say with indignation, "I'm not even sure ye did anythin'!"
Except punch you a whole lot, she did do that.

"Are ye even sure ye did do somethin'? The toddler was throwin' around a rainbow compared to me!"
"She's also half your age, Jack." She dusts off her hands, "She's going to master and understand barrier magic long before you do, which is why you have to keep working at it."

>"Yar, no thanks. My gun works just as fine. "
>"For what end does this serve?"

"Lass.. I'm gonna ask once."
She sighs at your impatience, but is gladly listening all the same.
"What purpose does all this serve?"

She looks over at Cody, who is currently sitting on one of the benches and trying to keep himself awake.
"Cody, right? You can help me out here."

He stretches as he stands, shuffling his heel as he slowly walks over.
"I haven't done this in a while, but-" She breathes in sharply and assumes a perfectly straight stance.

"Cody, you have three guns on you, right?"
Cody gasps.
"How did you know about that third one, miss?"
"I want you to shoot at me, Cody."

"Er.." Cody gives this pause for thought, "Miss, the smartest thing anyone ever told me is that I don't shoot at something unless I want it dead. I know things work differently around here bu-"
"Just do it."

Cody sighs, but he's already drawn his pistol and fired four shots right at her center of mass.
There's a sound, one that you can barely identify as each shot strikes true. It's like hot metal striking tin.
Lynneth presents her hand to him. Between each of her fingers is a single magic bullet. Each one slowly fading away.

Cody is speechless, Lyn continues her explanation.
"That is barrier magic. I'm sure you two know what the barrier is. It's the big bubble of power that hovers over our cities and countries to protect us from harm."
You remember that much.

"The barrier is the natural harmony of all living creatures who dwell within. Barrier magic is creating a very small, personal barrier using your heart as a rhythm. You can heal with it, you can see with it, skilled users can even fly on their own will." She says, without a single hint of sarcasm or jest.

>"No thanks, I already got a ship that lets me fly just fine."

"..Maybe I need another demonstration to get it." You say, scratching your head.

"..You sure?" She says, thinking about what you said for a moment.
"Lass, it's nothing personal, but I expect results from my training. If it's gonna be that hard to learn, I don't see why I wouldn't be better served by focusing on getting better at what I can already do."
"Because Jack, Barrier magic is the only thing that can fight- You know what Jack, you're right. You do need another demonstration."

She doesn't respond to that in the way you were expecting. Instead she reaches behind her head and undoes her hair, which falls down along her back in a white sheet. Then, she tosses her hat perfectly onto one of the benches and allows her pointed ears to freely spring up from her scalp.
Then, the least expected of her actions, she undoes her blouse and seems to pull her entire outfit off of her person with a single pull.

"Uh.. Miss?"
"This wasn't the demonstration I had in mind, Lass." You say, strangely conflicted.

"Oh hush." She pulls a handkerchief from the pocket of her blouse and discards it onto the bench. Leaving her in only a modest wrapping for a bra and a pair of unassuming underwear. With agility, she wraps the handkerchief around her eyes like a blindfold. That's when you become aware of her snow-white tail drifting behind her.

"Cody, Jack. As you can see I am nearly naked and cannot see." She stands back in that straight posture. "If either of you can grab my tail, you can have it."

Wait.
"'Have' it, Lass?"
"You both heard me." She says again, more sternly. "You can both have it any time you wish, whenever you want. You can even use your weapons against me if you think that will help."

"So, are you-"

Ha! Like you're going to give her a chance to finish!
Before she even knows what is happening, you and Cody already know what you're going to do. Both of you rush her immediately with your eyes on the very slender, fuzzy prize.

Then there's that sound again.
SLAP!

This time, it's like your fist impacted with the steel plating of a full suit of decorative armor.

"Jack." Cody says, clearly trembling. "I-is it just me, or does she have the fortitude of a fully grown steer?"
He's right, our fists seem to have impacted with a granite wall made of peach-colored flesh. Her arms, of which she's barely registered as receiving an impact, she holds outstretched to block your blows.

You know that there's no way anyone in this world can keep up with you. Especially Cody, he has to know that better than anyone.

Quickly, both of you leap back and try attacking her at a different angle. This time, you both try going straight at her from two sides.
Strangely enough, she doesn't even move, or flinch. She stands perfectly still.

Both you and Cody reach for her tail at once. She, oddly, doesn't bother trying to move or sway it out of the path of your approach. Maybe she can't see? She is blindfolded after all.

That is when you and Cody reach and make contact with it.
Or at least try to.

With a mighty whump, both you and Cody ram straight into each other. Looking around, you notice that Lyn was somehow just a few inches away from where you saw her last. Despite you being certain that she had not moved since you previously blinked.

"Do you both understand now?" She says, not moving.
Cody tries to reach out and grab the tail at it's new position, but sees his hand blocked by an unseen force that scalds its surface.
"Barrier magic is the art of perfect defense. And only an understanding of barrier magic can fight barrier magic."

"Alright Lass.." You sigh, "I'm listening."

"Hold up Jack, she can't block everything!" Cody jumps back, and takes out two of his guns. With a flurry, he releases 12 shots right at Lyn.
Lyn moves her arms to block once again, but Cody is right behind those bullets!

Each bullet is caught in the air, just like last time, but Cody follows it up with a series of punches that catch her off-guard. Quickly, he grabs for her tail.

Just for her tail to slap him. He sputters backwards and lands on his back.

Lyn turns her head toward you, with a weary smile. Gently, you can hear her coughing.
"I think both of you have good potential."
"Aye, Lass. And one more thing."
You reach over and grab the white fuzzy strand.
"Got yer tail." You smirk at her.

Her face seems flush all of the sudden.
"Yeah.. yeah you did." She tries to giggle,. "Just show up at about eight."

"Aye, Lass. And I have to ask, why aren't ye fighting if ye obviously can?"

She coughs again, this time sitting down. She puts her knees to her forehead.
"I really.. really- I think I overdid it."

Cody gets the hint and grabs her clothes from the bench, you take off her blindfold and try to help her to her feet.
"N-no, No, I'm fine. Thanks but-"

She doesn't finish, you grab her before she faceplants into the dirt.
"What the-" Cody wraps her clothes around her as best as he can.

--

"You need to quit carrying unconscious girls into the castle like this, Jack. It's starting rumors." Fritelli says, putting a pack of ice onto Lyn's head.
"Tough." You reply back to her. "So what happened?"
"She's too old, she shouldn't be doing this anymore." Fritelli tries to help her back into her clothes. "But she loves it. I think she wanted to fight you more than give you a demonstration."

"Alright Lass, now that you're here, and you're always straight with me. Tell me why she thinks I need this here magic when my gun seems to do everything just as well?"

Fritelli puts her finger to her mouth and leads out out of the guest bedroom. She slowly shuts the door behind her before walking a far enough distance away from the room.

"Jack are you crazy? She's hardheaded enough as it is. She would probably try to make you eat those words."
"Aye, but it's a fair question. Nothing here has even made me break a sweat, yet she thinks I suddenly need lots of hocus pocus? Why is that?"

"She.. misses having students. I was noticing that when she was teaching Louise."
"... That's great, but only do things when they benefit me. How does this 'ere magic benefit me?"

"I'm getting to that. She's worried you'll have to leave the barrier soon. And outside the barrier there is little to no protection." Fritelli says. "She was telling me about it earlier, how she thinks the problems are coming from outside. Saying something about this 'happening before'."

"..Does she know something?" This Lyn person is getting more mysterious.
"I don't know with her, Jack. The last time I saw her I was barely a puppy." Fritelli sighs.
"Er, Lass, How old is she anywa-"

She interrupts, "If she's right, having her magic gives the same protection outside the barrier as you have inside."

"Oh! Jack! One more thing you can help me with. "

She takes you to the Cafeteria, where there's a small commotion surrounding a certain brown-tailed foxgirl.
Camille sits between two blond foxgirls. One of them is chatting excitedly into Camille's ear, while the other is grappling with her dress and crying about how she should have never let her go.

Okay, sorry again for the slow update speed.

So, I know no one sees the use in the magic right now. So I can give you a choice: Metadump about what it does or just wait and see how it's useful.
In hindsight, I just added it in because we're getting close to something and it might be fun to have.

Your decision. Let me know what you thought of today's thread. And thanks.

One more thing, Next week is when I start my new job, which means I don't know how threads are going to be spaced or how they're going to be timed anymore. We'll just have to wait and see.

Wait and see is better. If Jack doesn't know, neither should we.

As far as the thread goes, can you include a brief summary of the events of last thread in the OP somewhere? I've been noticing that I'm never entirely sure that I'm caught up when I start the threads, even though I saw the previous thread through to the end. It's a little jarring, and will likely be more so if you update less frequently than you currently do.

Congratulations on the new job! I should probably start looking myself. I don't make nearly enough.
>>
>>37988564
I can start doing that. In fact I should considering how long this quest has gone on.
