You are Reinhold Eschenwald, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After a surprising show of initiative on the part of Emilio, you and Marianne have decided to try and give him and Karel some alone time while you go searching for something for Inaba to wear.

You're not sure if she'll actually give you much input pertaining her choice, but that doesn't mean that you won't try.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

"I really wish I could have gotten a chance to have KArel try something on, though..." Marianne says with a wistful sigh. "She really is a cute girl, and I wish she'd expand her wardrobe some more in order to take advantage of that fact."
"Well I think you've already burnt that bridge," you reply. "She seemed pretty pissed at you, you know?"
"For the fourth time, that was for her own good," Marianne says, rolling her eyes at you. "I'm sure that even -you- can understand how important... support is, yes?"

You stare at her, stunned that she'd even bring up such a subject up when talking to you.

"What, don't act so surprised," Marianne says as she starts rifling through another dress rack. "From your lack of hesitation in helping me with my own wardrobe issues back in Marconetti, I could tell even then that you're no stranger such things."
"Well yeah," you stammer, "but still, don't you think that-"

Nope, time to drop it.

You glance across the store and spot Emilio holding a horrifyingly gaudy jacket up to his body while Karel laughs at him. You're pretty glad that she seems to have bounced back from the indignity that is getting fitted for -those- as quickly as she seems to have done.

"What are you smiling about?" Marianne asks, looking right atr your face.
"Huh?" you quickly turn back to your ward.
"That's the same look that -Violette- gets when she's admiring her handiwork," she replies. "Now tell me what you did," she says, crossing her arms.

Oh, so -that's- what she's talking about.

"Nothing," you shrug. "Just, y'know, looking at those two over there," you gesture your head over to where Karel and Emilio are.
"...oh," Marianne sighs.

"What do I think of what?" Marianne replies, completely unamused.
"Of those two getting together."
"I think it's nice that now I won't have him pining after me anymore," she says, rolling her eyes.
"C'mon, I'm asking your honest opinion here."

Though in retrospect, you should have expected her to be sarcastic about it.

"........." Marianne lets out a long sigh. "I -guess- it's cute," she says. "And since she already liked him to begin with, the only issue is whether or not he'll screw things up for himself..." she says, glancing over at the two of them. "I do hope things work out between them, though."
"That's pretty nice of you," you reply.
"I'm nowhere nearly as heartless as you think I am... though I suppose I was also wrong about you."
"Eh?"
"Clearly you masterminded this entire thing," she says, shaking her head. "She wouldn't have been outed as a girl when she was if not for -your- meddling... and I bet you'd been coaching her concerning her lovelife long before that even happened."

Worse. Celestino is distrustful of us so it was really a lot better that Gregory outed her. He's unlikely to find out about our role in things. Also, Emilio and Karel now have plenty of time to date each other. If it happened in Marconetti it'd be a lot harder to justify keeping them together in a casual atmosphere, and you'd also probably have bodyguards in the way.

If Gregory didn't find out until later,

More then likely, they would have been found out anyways, just instead of making Karel sit around feeling embarrassed, it would have been done in a more comfortable setting.

Adrein comes back, Therri would have likely found out and then had a talk to put her at ease and Karel would have been ease into it, instead of making everything a big fat embarrassing family gathering all at once.

"Maybe something simpler," you say. "If you got her anything too restricting, I dunno if she'd actually wear it."
"Good point," Marianne replies. "Simple it is..."

Marianne spends the next twenty minutes or so scouring dress rack after dress rack, handing you several different dresses only to take them back a few seconds later because they seemed "wrong." And while you're definitely used to this kind of thing, that doesn't make it any less annoying.

"Maybe we could come back later?" you ask.
"No, there's got to be -something- here that's suitable as a gift for her," Marianne replies with an exasperated sigh.

You decide to take this as divine retribution for what she forced Karel to go through.

"I suppose this could work," Marianne says as she holds up a blue dress. It's indeed simple, with its only ornamentation consisting of a few bows. "Do you think she'd be willing to wear it?"
"Probably," you shrug. "I don't see why she wouldn't be."
"Great," Marianne nods. "And now that I have this, just let me pay for the -other- things and then we can be on our way."

Finally, you'll be out of here!

After Marianne hands you the dress that she's picked out for Inaba, the two of you make your way towards the counter. Unsurprisingly enough, there's a rather large bag already waiting for her when you get there, surely filled with Karel's unmentionables.

"Your cousin's-" the attendant begins to say, but is cut off.
"I'll be paying for everything myself today," Marianne replies. "Those are more or less a gift for her..."
"Ah, of course!" she replies with a nervous laugh.

While the attendant tallies up the final price of everything that Marianne's buying, Emilio and Karel finally rejoin the two of you.

"You're done here?" Emilio asks.
"Yup," you reply. "You guys aren't getting anything for yourselves? Not even that nice coat I saw you holding up a little while ago?"

>Dear Papa,

>Reinhold took our travelling party to the quaintest little spot today, a delightful fishing village by the name of Cateno. It's where he said he'd grown up before becoming a swordsman. Each street and every corner is filled with rugged, local charm. A hungry man can simply take what he needs, free of charge, and many of the women here are so... affectionate. We stayed until the sunset, our eyes dazzled by a brilliant display of yellows and oranges. Such was the warmth of Cateno, it was as if we could almost feel it radiating from the town as we watched from our vantage point just outside.

"Naturally," you say as you turn up your chin in imitation of certain arrogant members of the nobility who you met while in Marconetti, "I felt the need to keep an eye on things in order to make sure that you wouldn't try anything untoward while alone with my close personal friend there," you point at Karel. "And as for that coat, I could see that thing from across the street," you say with a smirk. "Though I have to admit that I didn't know that you had such... loud tastes in clothing..."
"C- c'mon, man!" Emilio pleads with you while Karel chokes back laughter.

You continue to get a few more laughs in at Emilio's expense while Marianne checks out, and a few minutes later she turns away from the counter while pointing at two bags of clothing.

Of course she doesn't intend to carry -anything- herself.

With a sigh, you take a few steps towards the counter and reach for the two bags that await you. But before you're able to take them, Karel rushes in and snatches the larger one up and away from your reach.

"Iiiiii can carry my own bags!" KArel shouts, her face bright red.
"Alright," you reply with a shrug.

Though you honestly wouldn't have minded, you fully understand why Karel would be averse to you lugging around a bag filled with such "delicates."

"Uh," Emilio turns to her, "...should I...?"
"Hell no!" Karel stammers.

While Karel makes no attempt to hide her embarrassment, you glance over at Marianne. And of course she's enjoying every minute of this.

"Alysse," Marianne says with a mischievous smirk, "I've been told that having one's boyfriend hold your bags is something of a tradition..."
"Hhhhhe's not-" Karel stammers.
"Wh- what do you mean b-" Emilio blurts out.

You can't help but laugh at the two of them as they fumble to explain to Marianne... whatever the hell they're trying to say. You quit trying to figure it out after a while and just soak in the sweet sweet embarrassment.

And once again, you wish that Luciana was here to enjoy it along with you.

Once they finally calm down, you all leave the store and move on to your penultimate destination: somewhere to get lunch!

You allow the two potential lovebirds to stew in their embarrassment without further provocation as you follow Marianne to some cafe that she insists has excellent food for a date. surprisingly enough, when you get there she actually tells the two of them to sit at a table by themselves while you share a table off to the corner with her.

"See?" Marianne says as she takes her seat. "I am perfectly capable of giving the two of them their privacy."
"...I can see that," you reply, looking at over at the two of them fumble their orders with the waitress who's attempting to serve them.
"And?"
"And what?"

Strictly by the book? Probably not, it's premeditated murder either way.

Is a jury going to give a death penalty to a guy who hunts down and murders random people? Probably.

Is a jury going to give more than a slap on the wrist at worst to an orphan who stabbed the guys who beat his sister? Probably not.

And that said, the mitigating circumstances are probably enough that the more extreme punishments aren't likely to even come up for consideration.

"What was that?" Marianne asks. "I didn't catch what you said."

Why did you think that she'd let this go easily?

"I was wrong to think that you wouldn't let them have their own privacy," you say with a long sigh, "I was worried about you maybe doing something to ruin their date, but I guess I shouldn't have been."

"As a matter of fact, I am," she says, a faint smile on her lips. "It's a welcome break after how stressful yesterday was."
"Stressful?"
"Ugh, yes," Marianne rests her head on the table. "There was the matter of where those Salamanders originated and whether or not their appearance was purposeful... then talk of war..."

After a waitress arrives with your food (a sandwich for Marianne and both that and a bowl of soup for yourself), you continue talking.

"And how are things going with you?" Marianne asks just before taking a dainty bite out of her sandwich.

"Things with her are going great too, I guess."
"She's not moving too fast for you, is she?"

There's no way in hell you can tell her about what happened last night, especially with that look of concern in her eyes... you've seen the same thing from Citrine more times than you care to think about it.

"...it's nothing I can't handle," you reply with a nervous chuckle.
"Alright then," Marianne replies. "As long as you remember that -you'll- be the one who really suffers should she pressure you into anything."

The rest of your time at the cafe goes by without much incident, and you can't help but check on how Karel and Emilio are doing every few minutes or so. "Miss Marie!" Marchamp gasps when he sees you and the others enter his shop. "I wasn't expecting you any time soon!"
"Yes, well today's a special occasion," Marianne replies, smiling warmly at her old friend. "My cousin here and her gentleman friend," she grabs Karel by the shoulders and pulls her into view, "have an interest in magic and so I recommended your establishment as somewhere that they'd be able to find something interesting."
"Ah, and she's every bit as lovely a girl as you, Miss Marie!" he laughs. "I can see the family resemblance!"

While Marchamp converses with Karel and Emilio about what types of magic books they're looking for, you fade into the background... you're not too knowledgeable about what they're talking about, and there's also the matter of not getting in the way of their couple time.

You glance to your side, and see that Marianne had the same idea as you.

"See?" Marianne says to you. "I'm giving them their space."

With nothing better to do, you look around the book-filled shelves...

"Anything in particular you were looking for?" Marianne asks.
"Eh, not really," you reply, shrugging. "Maybe something to help teach Carina how to read if they have one, I guess..."
"Ah, that's right..." she says, a wistful look in her eyes, "...she doesn't know how to read..."
"Or count," you sigh. "Marius mentioned teaching her numbers, but she'd still need something to help her to learn how to read."
"How paternal of you," she laughs.

You're not sure if she's making fun of you or complimenting you.

"To be honest, I'm surprised that you didn't end up adopting her yourself," Marianne says to you. "But I guess the missus wouldn't have approved of that."
"C'mon, we're not married yet," you sigh. "Not even engaged, either."
"Yet?" she raises an eyebrow. "You could always change that, you know..."
"Yeah, but I'm definitely not ready for that."
"It's a shame regarding Carina, though..." she shrugs. "I'm sure you would have made an excellent father."
"What, you'd approve of me adopting her?"
"That seemed to be where things were heading, so yes," she replies.

You follow Marianne towards what is apparently the children's section of the bookstore and watch as she flips through a few books before handing three of them to you. The first is a book about learning how to count that features a cute rabbit mascot character, the second an alphabet book featuring strange-looking striped cat, and the third a simple children's storybook featuring a turtle. You're tempted to make a comment about Marianne's own personal tastes factoring into her choice of books, but opt not to do so.

"I think these will suit your purposes just fine," Marianne says to you. "And perhaps you and the wife could help teach her how to read together..."
"C'mon..." you sigh.

After a little more waiting, you see Marchamp hand Emilio several thick tomes that he seems to struggle to carry on his own. Your first impulse is to help him out, but these are probably books for Karel and that means that his manly pride is most likely at stake and you're not about to undermine that.

"You've found what you'll be getting?" Marianne asks, casually walking over to where they're standing.
"Yeah," Karel nods. "Just some stuff that looked interesting..."
"I see," she replies. "Well if you're done then we could-"
"Uh, one minute," you hold up your free hand. "Mr. Marchamp, you wouldn't happen to have any more grimoires in stock, would you?"

Though she's still poring through the ones you got her last time, you're not about to pass up an opportunity to give her something nice.

"Sorry," he replies. "They don't really sell so I haven't been accepting them from my supplier..."
"...oh," you sigh. "Thanks anyways."
"Well if you want, I could try and pick up one or two for you the next time I get the chance to," he says to you.
"Really?" your eyes widen. "Thanks, that'd help a ton!"

With your shopping done, you and Emilio pay for your respective books and bid Marchamp farewell...

Ultimately going back to get it later and leaving it for her as a gift without all of the ceremony is the better idea, but it lacks a lot of the immediate impact/satisfaction.

I'm pretty sure she would only be superficially annoyed were we to get it now, since it's something we know she's taken with, but also something she'll absolutely never go to get for herself because she's stubborn that way. All that matters is that we not try and make a huge deal out of it.

>Maybe we could let Thierri know and he'd have her find this precise halberd in her closet.
I feel like this might even be more embarrassing for her than if we were to get it, since she's still kind of hung up on it.

We know Thierri would absolutely love the whole deal, but he's also the kind of guy who would do the proud father thing about it early and often. For as much as she loves the guy, I can't help but think that for the time being she'd appreciate having it be more personal way of showing it as opposed to immediately subjecting this fond whim to the force of Thierri's full-on 24-7 boisterousness.
>>
While you'd like to go and get that halberd, now probably isn't the time... as such, you make a mental note to figure out how to do so at some better time.

Instead, you and the others make your way to the waiting carriage.

"Ready to head back?" the driver asks.
"Yes, please," Marianne replies.

Upon getting a better look at the driver, you recognize him as the same one who drove you all over the place yesterday with Luciana and Carina. After tossing him two silver pieces as thanks for his trouble (as well as asking him to make an extra stop along the way back), you head back to the others.

"If you'd mind helping me into the carriage?" Marianne asks.
"Uh, yeah," you nod.

Following the Princess' orders, you hop inside first and then lend her a hand to get inside herself. While walking around you in order to reach her preferred place at the side of the car opposite the door, she pushes you into your seat...

Glancing outside, you realize exactly why Marianne did what she did.

"Umm..." Karel mumbles while using her free hand to tug on the end of her dress, "...today was nice."
"...yeah," Emilio nods.
"Maybe we could come out here again some time."
"That'd be nice," he shrugs.
"And, uh..."

Summoning up all her courage, Karel takes a deep breath before leaning in and kissing Emilio on the cheek. He stands there, petrified as she races into the carriage and scoots over to the window... and both you and Marianne don't even bother hiding your amused smiles as she does so.

The short-haired PRincess hides her face behind her bag as Emilio fumbles his way into the carriage himself... and then it seems that she remembers what exactly is -inside- said bag and quickly stows it away just as you find yourselves pulling off.

The atmosphere inside the carriage is hilariously awkward as you and Marianne watch Emilio and Karel do their best not to actually look at each other...

"Huh?" Marianne looks outside as the carriage comes to a stop. "What's going on?"
"Just a short pitstop," you reply. Karel, you mind watching over Marie while I'm out?"
"...sure?" Karel replies, shrugging as you hop outside and run inside the weapons shop from this morning.

You make a beeline to the rear of the store, picking up the surprisingly heavy halberd that Marianne was admiring not too long ago before making your way back to the front counter. Though it's tempting, you opt not to have it giftwrapped (why did they even offer) before heading back outside and loading it into the carriage.

"I'll explain when we get back home," you reply.

You can tell that she's somewhat perturbed by this sudden detour, but fortunately for you she opts to let it slide for now.

Once the carriage starts moving again, the wonderful mood of awkwardness returns, and you REALLY want to tease the both of them every bit as relentlessly as Luciana would be sure to do were she here...

Maybe next time we find ourselves in town we'll be able to introduce them to the Wilhelms.

Nothing quicker to defuse awkward silence than getting Marianne rolling on the subject of cute babies and/or pastries, after all.

Should you tease them some more? You definitely WANT to... but no, that would probably come off as a total dick move instead of the playful jerkishness that you've cultivated in your interactions with them. So instead, you decide to play it safe.

"So Karel," you call out.
"YES!?" Karel shouts.

Yup, still on edge.

"Got any plans for the rest of the day?" you ask. "It's still kind of early, after all."
"Umm..." Karel glances at Emilio, "...I was thinking about maybe hanging out with your grandma if she's still around. If Emilio's okay with it, I mean..."
"Y- yeah, that's fine with me!" the Prince stammers.

Yeah, you're at your absolute limit of self-control... time to talk to someone wlse before you lose it.

"What about you?" you say, turning to Marianne.
"I'll probably be heading up to my room," she replies. "I haven't really decided yet, but that's my likely course of a-"

Suddenly, the carriage skids to a halt. You instinctively throw our your arm to keep Marianne from falling into the other side of the car while placing your other hand on your sword...

<AHEAD>

A "voice" echoes into your head.

<CAREFUL VERY STRONG>

"Gotcha..." you say as you lean towards the door. Unfortunately, you don't see anything outside from this position.
"...Reinhold?" Marianne grips onto your arm as tightly as she can. "What's going on?"
"My sword says there's something strong outside," you reply.
"You sword-" her eyes grow even wider than before. "What should we-"
"I'm gonna go check it out," you reply. "Karel, stay inside and keep guard, okay?"
"...alright," she nods.

Carefully, you open the door just long enough to hop outside, then close it back. As your feet hit the ground, you hear the driver of the carriage shouting...

"What the hell are you doing!?" he screams. "Running out like that! I'll have you know that you could be-" he stops talking once he spots you rushing in front of the carriage. "Sir Reinhold!" he calls out. "I don't know who the hell this guy is, but he-"
"I have it," you reply. "just be prepared to move if need be, alright?"
"Yes sir!"

"No, not until we know if it's a threat," you reply.

With your sword at the ready, you approach the figure that's slumped over in the road.

"Hold out your arms to the side and stand up!" you shout. "Try anything funny and I run you through!"

The figure coughs violently and leans on his... sword(?) before doing just as you instructed. Slowly, he raises his head, revealing a face that you've seen before.

"...Leopold!?" you gasp.
"H- hey, buddy..." the Knight of Marconetti says, waving to you with a bloody hand. "Fancy meeting you here..."

You stand there stunned as he falls face-first onto the ground.

I said that the next time I posted this picture would be when it was relevant, and here we are. I thank everyone who's accompanied me to this point, and hope that you'll stick around to the end. Hopefully, I don't screw it up too bad.

I'll be switching over to False Dendrite next time, though I'm not sure if I'll be running on Wednesday or Thursday. Check the twitters for further details, I guess.

and now questions
>>
>>37991862
Well shit. Assuming he's completely legit himself, this probably means there is a BAD THING nearby.

We should still be wary of Leopold, no idea if there's any magical trap equivalent to a bomb vest or even illusions that could make this a trick.
>>
>>37991900
Thanks for the thread Archelon.

Were we on our best behavior tonight?
>>
>>37991862
I think the thing to do is presume sword is right and tell the people in carriage to start casting magic that will act as a flare. The more chaos the quicker someone shows up to help.

If either of these are the case, I suggest we tell the carriage to gtfo and use the Joestar secret technique.

I'm not sure if he got stabbed by someone bad on his way here or is possessed or an imposter. We may find out in short order. I think right now we keep everyone's distance from carriage and call for help. If anyone acts suspicious stab first and ask questions later.

He was well enough to limp here, he'll just be passed out. If needs be we can probably help stabilize him with our healing magic, and I'm sure Marianne and Emilio will know some more potent healing spells given they're more advanced magic users.

>>37991962
I'd still like to let her know a little more about our background; knowing that we were such a dick because of TRAUMA rather than because we hated her and we were just lying about not being ready might help since she seems to have at least some self-confidence issues over it.

Plus then she can redirect some of her anger to a more deserving target.

>you guys really are awful friends though
Hey, we didn't really get presented with the opportunity to ask for us to be a friend for her during the timeskip; I had presumed that's what "continuing magic lessons" was shorthand for as it was spending a few hours just doing stuff with her.

Most of the time our choices have been over immediate situations, and when we do shoegaze about leaving her out we get told we've been shitty to her without being given an option to spend a few hours with her or something.

I actually think monique is a good character and should reconcile with reinhold in the future.

Maybe assassination fighting has put things in perspective.
