You calmly walk away from your team and head towards the mountains. You're violating several sections of the military protocol, but you don't mind putting Captain DuLac in your debt and it's not like your sharpshooting would be very useful if a massive battle breaks out. You do your best work when you can take your time and chaotic battles don't allow for that. Besides, if you do this right, you should be able to get a few very important kills.

You crouch and duck behind a tree to get a better view of your surroundings. The Gallians and the Imperials are both committed to the fight and there are three small skirmishes going on in the immediate area.

The first is between a group of Imperial scouts and mixed Gallian troops. The scouts are pinned down on the Gallian side of the battle lines, so they must be returning from or going to a reconnaissance mission.

The second is between two groups of shocktroopers. The Gallians are holding their own, but the Imperials have the advantage of cover.

The third battle is a fight between Gallian troops and a damaged Imperial tank. The Gallians are laying down suppressive fire to prevent a group of Imperial engineers from advancing.

You don't have time to provide cover and support, but you can at least take out one officer and disrupt the enemy.

You lie down on your stomach and aim at the engineers. It's an uncomfortable position and your sights are awkward, but it's the only way you can avoid exposing yourself.

The engineers are fighting back, trying to clear the battlefield so they can rush to the tank and repair it, but their rifles just aren't cutting it. They're pinned behind cover. It's perfect for a headshot.

Your scope passes over their shoulders and their helmets, looking for the rank insignia. Most of them are enlisted men and women. However, there is one captain among them.

You move your rifle slightly to the captain's side to compensate for the wind coming towards the mountain and pull the trigger. Your bullet drills through the engineer's throat and explodes out the back of his neck. He dies as his subordinates try and fail to tend for his failing body.

That'll be hell on the engineers' morale. The Gallians will be able to clean the skirmish up now.

You use the chaos to dash towards the mountains and look for your next destination. As long as you keep moving towards the back of the Imperial lines and stick to cover, you should be able to pick up Ernestine's trail.

You decide to just crawl on the ground and pose as a corpse. You'll be more exposed, but your confident that no one will have attention to spare on you. The Gallians are keeping the Imperials busy enough.

So you drag yourself through the mud and the blood while looking for potential targets. You slowly head closer towards the back of the Imperial lines. The farther you go, the fewer Gallians there are, but this operation was based on a fighting retreat. There are plenty of corpses to hide behind and the Imperials aren't organized. It's still easy to hide.

After a mile of crawling, you slip into a ditch. Now that you have some better cover, you can afford to cause a bit of mischief.

You also have higher-ranking targets to pick from. From your current position, they shouldn't be able to spot you. If anyone dies, the Imperials will just assume it was a stray bullet.

There's another group of engineers. They're busy getting more grenades.

There's also a group of fencers. They must have been left behind because they couldn't keep up with the Imperial vanguard.

The last target is a tank commander. He's standing right on top of his tank, overlooking the battlefield.

You pull the trigger. The tank commander's headless corpse tips over off the side of the tank. The nearby soldiers panic and gather around the tank to secure the area. You stay in the ditch and wait for them to disperse. After ten minutes, they relax slightly and change their position.

You crawl out of the ditch and continue your journey towards the back of the Imperial lines. There are fewer and fewer corpses as you go, but there are also fewer live soldiers. The Gallian strategy was a success. The Imperial lines are stretching too far.

You look for the next patch of cover you can use.

You carefully move towards the tree. Once you're at its foot, you look around to make sure no one is looking for way and climb up into its branches. You sit on comfortably on a branch and lean against the trunk. The leaves are a little in your way, but the branches way with the wind, so with just a little patience, you can get a good view of the area.

You're surrounded by Imperials, but that's not new. However, these Imperials aren't moving forward. It seems you found the rear back of the Imperial forces. They're either waiting for the vanguard to fight off the Gallian forces or they're staying back to provide reinforcements in case something goes wrong. Which, if you're lucky, it already has.

Then again, you're luck is pretty good as it is. From what you can tell, there are no less than three colonels in the area. One is managing the supply trucks, another is taking reports from scouts and runners and the third is with a group of fencers.

However, you're far from the front lines. This won't be passed off as a stray bullet.

You lean back and ponder the situation. Those supply trucks are a problem. Killing the colonel won't make that problem, but it will force the Imperials to move more carefully and it will delay them. The supplies won't be able to reach the front lines in time if there's an emergency.

The trick is killing the colonel without anyone noticing.

You feel the wind blowing. It should be at the colonel's back. In theory, a sufficiently skilled sniper could fire the bullet to make it go through the back of the target's head. That would throw the Imperials completely off your trail.

You brace yourself against the tree and take a deep breath to calm down. You can't afford to make any mistakes here.

You raise the rifle with a relaxed arm and peer through the scope. The tree leaves are in your sight, but there's nothing you can do about that now. You focus your attention on the colonel who's overseeing the supplies. His profile is towards you. You need to shoot him in the back.

You overcompensate for the wind factor by the tiniest margin and pull the trigger.

Your body freezes and you hold your breath, waiting for the outcome.

The colonel stumbles once and falls forward. There's no wound on the side of his head. The bullet went through the back of his skull. There's no exit wound. The Imperials won't be able to tell where the shot came from.

They gather around the colonel and hide behind makeshift cover to protect themselves. A small group of scouts heads out, presumably to look for you, but they're not heading anywhere near your current location. No one's even looking towards you.

You drop down from the tree and head towards the mountain. This is as close to the Imperial headquarters as you can get by staying on flat ground. If Ernestine made it farther than this, she must have gone up the mountain.

You've killed enough people for now. Your current priority is to find Ernestine and make sure she's not dead. You crouch down and press against the mountain wall as much as possible to avoid getting spotted.

You quickly find a single trail of small bootprints. Ernestine must have come up here and it doesn't look like anyone followed her. You pass by a decent sniping spot and keep going up the trail until you reach a ledge.

Ernestine immediately rolls over from her position and points her rifle at you. Her eyes go wide when she sees you and she points her rifle elsewhere.

"To assassinate Imperials and steal your kills," you say. "You?"

"Come over and I'll show you."

Ernestine moves over a bit so you can lie down and look through her rifle's scope.

You have a direct view of the Imperial headquarters. A large number of officers in pristine uniform are gathered around a table covered in maps. They must be keeping track of the battle. Ernestine's scope is firmly centred on a young officer. He's just a captain, while most of the others are majors.

"You want to assassinate a captain out of this lot?" You ask.

"Not him," Ernestine says. "The man next to him. From what I can tell, that captain is a Lieutenant General's adjutant. He stepped into my shot right when I was about to pull the trigger."

"Lieutenant General…" You mutter to yourself. "That's too big just to siege Ghirlandaio. He must be in charge of the Empire's campaign against all of northern Gallia, at least."

"That's what I figured," Ernestine says. "He needs to die, but someone needs to get the captain out of the way. I can't do it alone, but if it's the two of us…"

"We might be able to kill them both," you say. "Our timing would have to be perfect though."

"We can do it," Ernestine says. "It's not like we have anything to lose."

>"Fine, but I want the Lieutenant General."

"This is your idea," you say. "I'll handle the captain."

"Good," Ernestine says. "There's only one good angle on the general, but there's more leeway for the captain. I'll follow your lead. Don't worry about the timing."

"Let's see…"

You slide over and set your rifle on the ground to get a shot at the captain. From this angle, it's easy to get a centre mass shot at him. It's not as clean as a headshot, but it'll force him down and out of the general's way for Ernestine.

"Ready?" You ask.

"Ready," Ernestine says.

Your target isn't moving much. You take a deep breath to calm your body and wait for a lull in the wood. You push the trigger as deep as you can without firing. Then you put in a little more pressure and the sound of a gun shot echoes across the mountain.

The captain falls back and clutches at the bullet wound on his chest. The Lieutenant General reflexively turns towards him. A second gunshot echoes. The Lieutenant General also falls back, but he doesn't have time to grasp at the wound over his heart.

"Yes!" Ernestine laughs and jumps up triumphantly. "I am going to get so much money out of that bastard!"

You stand up and smile at the two corpses far below you.

"Congratulations," you say.

"Thanks," Ernestine says. "So… do you have any suggestions as to how we're going to get out of here? There's no we the Imperials won't come looking for us."

"You never know," you say. "We have been here a while."

You pick up your sniper rifle and peer through the scope. The Imperials are indeed organizing search groups, but it looks like the officers are arguing with each other. Now that the man in charge is dead, the chain of command must be disrupted. The Imperials need someone to take control of the battle, but who would be willing to pass up that kind of field promotion?

They won't be able to recover.

You also spot a group of battered trucks and equally battered troops heading towards the headquarters. It seems the battle is also going in Gallia's favour.

"We'll be fine," you say. "They can't reorganize and it looks like their main army is losing. We can just wait for them to retreat."

"I guess that means our work here is over."

"There are other fronts," you say. "But now that northern Gallia is secure, we'll be able to reinforce them effectively. We can force the Imperials out of our country."
