"Did you ever hear voices in your head?"Again that question. What are they trying to say? And who is listening to them so closely that they can't be straightforward about it?Baron of the Final Tide grosses his swords in front of him, in a guarding stance, and dashes against you. The blades whistle slashing through the air, and you step backwards narrowly avoiding their screams. He immediately follows up with a low leg sweep that nearly knocks you off your feet......but you manage to shift your weight at the last moment and take a second step back, keeping your balance. "This is getting annoying." Tia mumbles from the sidelines, clearly itching for a fight. It must be hard for her, to stand back without getting involved. You can't really allow yourself to dismiss this odd riddle the Abyssals of the Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine are throwing at you the way she does, though. They made it fairly clear: there's something they're trying to tell you. And they can't speak openly. That much, you understood. ...Or at least, you think. And you need to figure it out before you reach their flying ship and end up face to face with the Deathlord herself.Baron interrupts your train of thought with a deep lunge, which you manage to parry with your open palm. The blade sends off sparks as it clashes and slides against your skin, and you and the Dusk-caste clash against each other, shoulder to shoulder.>Get some distance, keep up your guard, try and make him talk.>Try and grab his swords and disarm him.>Try to grab him in a wrestling hold, then throw him.>Try to grab him in a wrestling hold, then crush him.>Try to grab him in a wrestling hold, and maintain it.>Strike him while you're inside his guard.>(Other?)

Abyssals are targeting the city for conquest, Lintha pirates have infiltrated it with spies and agents, and the Realm is probably planning to get rid of you. But things are also looking up. You have gathered a lot of allies and friends, have a powerful Manse under construction, and are unifying Tianna in a great nation under your overwhelming charisma. You just discovered the reason everyone seems to be so interested in Tianna: an enormous magical fortress lies buried underground, a relic of the First Age with enough firepower to destroy anything...>Solar? He's clearly more skilled than you in personal combat, but he's not interested in going full-power and defeating you.Plus, he's nimble, fast and agile, but you don't know if he's actually strong enough to hurt you. This could be a standstill. After facing for a handful of seconds, he surprises you making a quick gesture at you, and two long black chains shoot at you from inside his sleeve, each tipped with a jagged, wide-bladed knife. You don't even try and parry them: the blades are slow and thrown without much force, and they bounce harmlessly against you....then the chains wrap around your arms and torso, suddenly moving of their own accord, like living snakes, and tug you towards him.>Let yourself be dragged, keep your guard up.>Let yourself be dragged, and use that momentum for a running punch.>Actually, plant your feet, and drag him instead.>Try and shatter those chains.>(other?)

Rolled 1 (1d10)>>38036863>>35043881>I don't like stepping in and outright saying things that players should figure out on their own, but if you need me to say "it was the Great Curse" because apparently it wasn't obvious enough for you, then sure, it was the Great Curse. In case anyone had forgotten, the Great Curse is real and is affecting us, even if you think so far it's harmless it's only going to get worse and we have a chance to mitigate it right now by realizing it's real.
"Do whatever you want, I'm tired of this charade." You reply, looking away from Millian. "There are no voices from beyond Death whispering to me. There is no curse." you mumble to yourself, staring into the distance as you climb back onto the cart."Maka...?" Millian is very distressed. You see she,s almost about to break and cry."Don't worry. Everything will be alright." you reassure her. "They're not going to hurt him." "Maka." Tia whispers to you, but you lift a finger to silence her."...what about me?" Reken asks, worried."I'll free you when Regis gets back to Tianna."She exchanges glances with Baron, and he nods before walking away, back towards the black airship."...seems fair." she mumbles. You turn the cart around, taking care not to break a wheel in the broken landscape, and head back towards Tianna, sad that you had to waste so much time trying to find a solution where there was none, but still a bit relieved that you didn't waste as much time as the abyssals tried to take up.For the entire trip back, Tia looks at you, frowning. It's an odd, pensive look, one that you don't often see on her.>What? You mad at me or something?>You didn't like how I handled that? You have a problem, Tia?>Smile, give her a kiss to cheer her up.>Stay silent, focus on getting back home quickly. You'll have a lot to do once you get back.>(Other?)

>>38036902>(Other?)>Fuck this! You came to talk to the Tyrant, you'll talk to the fucking Tyrant
Didn't "I want to meet the Tyrant anyway" win?
>>38036976Your tears are delicious. But I'm afraid you don't have the willpower to resist the curse. But seriously, this isn't even railroad. EF wanted us to proceed and discover more, this pretty much the curse fucking everyone's plans, even his.I can only imagine how frustrated he is right now, poor EF.
>>38037013I meant IC it's subtle. It's not a voice in your head trying to persuade you, it's your very thoughts being twisted.
Rolled 2 (1d10)>>38036902>>You didn't like how I handled that? You have a problem, Tia?C'mon Tia, this is the part where you show you're stuff and slap our shit.
Rolled 2 (1d10)>>38037025Yes, but in his infinite wisdom and genius the QM decided to completely ignore everything and railroad Maka away from her goals and mission in a 'subtle' attempt to introduce the Curse.Fucking retarded is what this is.
>>38036957Yeah, fuck this and fuck the great curse.Fight the power, Maka. Get back on track! There is a chance to solve this without a goddamn war and you're not going to have the Curse get in the way.And YOU PEOPLE best stop giving the Curse material to work with, assholes.
Rolled 8 (1d10)>>38037031>it's your very thoughts being twisted. They were not 'twisted' at ALL.They didn't even exist, why the fuck did he even bother with that vote if he wanted to fuck us over like this?

and that is why I dislike the Great Curse. It robs players of all agency, both in the original game and this quest
>>38037063No he didn't, he didn't give us a chance for anything, if he did he wouldn't have just outright ignored every single vote after that update and steamrolled straight through with this bullshit.><Exaltedfag> i love playing mindgames with my players.Protip EF: There is a world of difference between "mindgames" and fucking your players in the ass by railroading against them directly like this.Go fuck yourself.
>>38037090Go away, spy/vaelys.
>>38037068>This is EF deliberately being an antagonistic fucktard and railroading us AWAY from what we were doing, what we came here to do.Do you honestly think we're just going to go back? What better way is there to represent willpower overcoming the mind control than having the thread lose its shit?He did something similar with that raksha where he stole our form and told Tia to go away, IIRC
Rolled 2 (1d10)>>38037068>This is EF deliberately being an antagonistic fucktard and railroading us AWAY from what we were doing, what we came here to do.And then we're going to turn around and go okay voices totally a thing, let's talk.I mean I don't like the Great Curse, but you aren't suppose to like it, just like you aren't suppose to like dying or getting hurt, but you power though and turn around and say we were wrong, because we were.
>>38037111>Do you honestly think we're just going to go back? No, I think EF is going to make us march into the sea to get as far away from our mission, our objective, our fucking free will and what we voted for.

Rolled 3 (1d10)>>38037159Like 75% chance it's Vaelys, he's obnoxious like this.
>>38037111I, personally, hope that Maka does go back to Tianna and no one says anything about itI'm having way too much with these anons crying and actually like the curse. It would be a disappointment to have it smashed against Maka's face like that.Of course, I'd also like to avoid the topic of the curse entirely, I don't want this quest to become Undo the Great Curse 3.7 Maka Edition.
Okay, can someone explain the Great Curse to me?I mean, I thought it was supposed to make the Exalted act like a version of themselves with all their bad traits up to eleven. Also, what were we supposed to do? Lie about hearing voices?
Rolled 6 (1d10)>>38036902>(Other?)C'mon Maka, it's going to be a war if you don't turn around, all you're loved ones will die.>>38037198I'm totally in favor of undoing the Curse, maybe not completely or even at all, but realizing it's a thing is nice, but honestly either is fine with me, it's a good story no matter what we do.
>>38037213The curse is something that helps an exalted character be cooler and more awesome by giving her a flaw that is compared to insanity. It's actually a pretty cool mechanic.
>>38037213>Also, what were we supposed to do? Lie about hearing voices?I have no idea. The Baron's logic doesn't make much sense to me. The Neverborn aren't our common enemies and we can't ally against them because we don't hear their voices? Wouldn't them wanting to destroy all of creation be enough reason to make them our enemy?
>>38037213Yeah, it magnifies your worst traits. In this case, it's passion, pride and self righteousness taken to an extreme of 'I don't need you to fix any of our problems. We'll fight, and i'll win' So yeah, we got screwed. Hard. Welp. Damage control mode.
>>38037198>I don't want this quest to become Undo the Great Curse 3.7 Maka Edition.Too late for that...It wouldn't have become that if not for that latest update.
Rolled 3 (1d10)>>38037213By canon yeah that's more of less what it is, but this quest isn't Raw and like any Storyteller EF can change any part of canon to how he wishes, something less gamist it looks like, liek with the Raksha he made it less rules-y and more narrative-y.
>>38037237Ugh, fuck. That's the most cliche shit in exalted games and this will really bring down the quest, imo.
>>38037213>Also, what were we supposed to do? Lie about hearing voices?I honestly don't think that ever actually mattered now, sadly like this entire thread. A shame to see such a great quest go this way.
>>38037236And how are we supposed to know when it happens? What the fuck were we supposed to do?Why is it happening now?
>>38037251Well you can thank your wonderful QM for that then, its entirely up to him and in his hands, as you can see nothing we, the players, say or do matters at all anymore.
>>38037267>Why is it happening now?Because the QM wanted to stir some drama with it and it horribly backfired like the terrible idea it is can only be expected to do.
After a whole five minutes, you pull the reins and stop the cart, unable to withstand Tia's inquisitive gaze any longer."Okay, what." You ask her, irritably, turning around to face her."You're overreacting." She notes peacefully."You're one to talk." You reply. "Since when have you been the voice of reason in this outfit?"She scratches her head. "You're just acting weird.""Back against the Lintha you were seriously thinking about cutting my legs off to keep me out of the fight." You remind her."I was being stupid back then." She admits. "You're being stupid right now."You take a deep breath, trying to calm yourself. "I should go back home." You tell her.She doesn't reply."Nothing will change anyway. Deathlords are Deathlords. It's a waste of time. It's not like I have a free choice. It's not like this entire crazy plan can work. It was all doomed to fail from the beginning.""...Why are we going back?" This time it's Millian asking you."I don't have a choice." You reply.Tia sighs loudly. You drop the reins and cross your arms. "Okay, what?" You ask her, like a challenge."I'm not going to marry a woman who gives up so easily." She says, looking at you straight in the eyes."Pfft." You try and suppress derisive laughter. "It's me. You're going to marry me anyway."You immediately feel bad about saying that. You feel bad about THINKING that. For a long minute, you just want to dig a hole in the ground and bury yourself. In utter silence, under Tia and Millian's gaze, you pick the reins back up.>Head back to to Tianna.>Head to the Black Airship

You pick up the reins and drive the cart back on the road towards the airship.Tia says nothing, she just keeps looking at you, like she's studying your facial expression. The silence gets embarrassingly long and empty. You decide to break it after a while, when you reach the point where Baron was waiting for you. "...Tia, I-""You don't have to say anything." She interrupts you."But-""It's alright."You drive the cart past the broken terrain. Time passes. You make good way, alone with your thoughts. The panorama around you turns downright ghastly. You see skeletons marching in ordered files and ranks, under black and silver banners. You see the sky turning black and cloudy, and the soil grey and lifeless. And, in the distance, but growing bigger and bigger with every spin of your wheels, the black shadow of Tyrant's airship, resting atop a black, dry hill. Finally, you reach it. Tents and flags are littered around in the orderly chaos of a silent, lifeless army camp.On the side of the ship, a large steel arch opens like a gate inside the bowels of the beast. An old acquaintance is waiting for you there, standing in the middle of the passage. He looks surprised."Baron told me you turned back.">I don't feel like talking about it.>I changed my mind.>Are you going to let me through or what? I'm in a hurry.>I have a question for you. You nod. "Makes sense.""Doc is..." He scratches his head. "He's really busy with another thing, let's say.""That does break the symmetry of the whole thing. Symbolism and all." You note.He shrugs. "Sometimes you have to make do with what you have. Even I got here at the last moment.""Oh?" You wonder."Looks like the Silver Prince is on the move." He replies, looking worried."Where to?" That is bad news."No idea yet. He's just marshaling his forces for now." He accompanies you inside, through a corridor lined with carved iron pillars and sculpted bone chandeliers. It gives you the chills, and the worst part is that you can't dispute that, despite its creepy aesthetic, it's actually fairly elegant, in its own weird way."...So... How's your mistress?"Phoenix smiles. "She kind of looks a bit like you.""Really?" You wonder. That sounds weird."Bit taller." He sidesteps as you both reach the end of the corridor, a massive double door in glass and steel. It's either brand new or has been recently polished to a mirror-like sheen, leaving not a speck of dust. The idea of a Deathlord ordering servants to clean up her house because she's waiting for guests is, for some reason, quite amusing to you."...The mortal should probably stay in the cart." Phoenix suggests, as you're about to push the door open. You give him a nod, and wait for him to escort her back before pushing the door open.(Cont.)

In a vast, black cathedral-like room, every surface in steel and iron lined with specks of blood-like rust, surrounded by black, red and silver drapes and tapestries, sits on an iron throne a massive, threatening figure, easily twice as tall as a normal human. The oddest thing right now is probably that, for some bizarre reason, you don't feel any sort of fear or anxiety. Is it odd that you feel so much at home right here and now?The massive death lord looks down at you with eyes glowing with the power of Death itself, and you feel an icy touch crawling across your skin.Tia steps behind you. Is she intimidated? Overwhelmed? Whatever it is, you didn't expect her to do it, and it catches you by surprise. You thought Tia was completely fearless, but now you feel her grasping your hand for comfort. The monster smiles pleasantly. "Welcome."Her voice is... it sounds like the voice a machine could make. A vast, hollow, magnificent machine made of brass pipes and perfected harmonics. But buried deep in the echo of that voice, in some distant place and time, you feel the lingering warmth of blood.>Be hostile>Be polite>Be direct>Be obsequious>Be informalCombined with>Formalities and introductions first.>About the hostages.>About this damn riddle.>About the Titan.>Just ask what she wants, let her speak.

You give the Tyrant a perfect bow, and gently pull Tia ahead from her hand to introduce her as well."It's a pleasure to be able to finally meet you in person.""Likewise." The Tyrant replies, slouching a bit deeper into her jagged throne. "I'm glad that you accepted my invitation, even though it was extended in a rather unorthodox way."Odd that she doesn't mention the people she sent to harass you along the way."This is my future husband, Tia." You present her. "If she'll still want me." You add with a bit of modesty, that seems well received."I, er... uh... hello." She bows very stiffly, clearly a fish out of all the waters that have ever been, are, and will ever be.So she's not afraid of a literal incarnation of death. She's worried that she'll cause you to make a bad impression on her in what is clearly an important meeting."Would you like something to eat or to drink?" She asks, gently lifting (where did she get that?) a silver pitcher. The smell of red wine wafts from it, together with spices and... something else. You're not sure how to reply to that. "He's with Millian. He seems alright.""Thank you." You say, twice: first to Tia, and then with a bow, to Tyrant. "So, now we're here. Also, normally I don't like pointing fingers, but there's something i want to talk with you guys about. When I throw you a curveball (not specifically "Maka doing something different than voted", I mean generally any unexpected event or result), there are two possible reactions:"What the shit, that is not what we voted for, railroading, worst QM ever."and"What the shit, that is not what we voted for. I wonder what's happening. Let's keep acting in character and use write-ins to avoid obviously bogus or biased options. There must be a reason this thing is happening."I realize I'm running a quest on 4chan and therefore I can't exactly choose my players. But I do hope (a bit naively perhaps) that all the players in the first category will get mad, drop Exalted Quest, and leave only those in the second category to play. The ones complaining about "GC plot ruins everything" are fine for example, that is legitimate criticism, I can take that. But if an Abyssal steals Maka's bike or something, react to it within the game, don't complain in meta because a turn of events you didn't like or approve of just happened.Let me come out clear: there ARE times where the result of your votes is going to be weighted unevenly or outright ignored, and times where you will be presented with biased or "trap" options. It could be the Great Curse, brainwashing, other curses, social combat results, memories and facets of personality from Maka's First Age persona or Primordial War persona resurfacing, or any other kind of reason. It's not going to happen often. Think how often it has happened in 60 threads and almost one year of running. I don't think it's going to be any more often that it has been up to now.You might not like it when it happens.Much like a bad dice roll, an Abyssal stealing your bike, or stuff like that, you will have to deal with it in-character as it happens, just like you did in this thread, with all the write-ins ignoring the options to go back.
