You open your eyes, yawning as you rise from your sunbathed bed.

« Lumière! » Ah, your mama is calling you. You rub your eyes, feeling the blood rush and give you feeling back into every bit of your muscles. «Lumière! Your breakfast is getting cold! Hurry up and come down! »

« Oui, mama! » you call back down to her. You hear the music bleeding through the bright wooden floor. Ah, Edith Piaf… You step off the bed, then dust down your flowing nightgown. You can’t remember much of what happened last night, but you hope it wasn’t anything important of course. You look around at your room, lovingly painted light green, with your hope chest at end of your bed. There’s a closet as well for your dresses and clothes as well, and there’s a bathroom and a lavatory as well to yourself.

You sniff the air as you open your windows wide. You hear the bells of victory ring through the streets. The birds sing and whistle as they fly past.

Oh, oh oui, that’s right! Your father is being awarded his Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur today! Excellent!

« Lumière! Quickly! You will be late for your job! »

Oh dear. You quickly open your closet. What to wear today!?

Though Siege Engineer's impending ending is quite sad, yeah.

> « Mama! Can you help me pick something out? »

Mama comes through the door, wearing a dark green apron and a nice black dress underneath it. Your Mama is the picture of unkempt beauty, having worked hard throughout the campaign against the Nazis in the factories. Her curly hair still has little bits of axle grease in it, buried underneath a red scarf wrapped around her head. She makes the crows feet and the bags under he eyes look cute. You could only hope to be as wonderful as her.

She sighs, smirking. « Lumi, must I choose everything for you? Honestly. » You pout at her, mockingly. « Oui… we will be attending the parade and the ceremony this afternoon so I’d suggest something a little formal, oui? » You nod, and watch as she takes out a nice blue shirtdress. « There, that compliments you well. » You smile as you drop out of your nightgown then quickly put it on. « Hold on, are you just going to put it on without bathing? »

You frown. « You think someone will notice? »

She sniffs the air, then cringes. « I am noticing now. » Mama! You slap her on the arm, frowning heavily. « I am joking! But seriously, groom yourself quickly, oui? Quick bath then it is off to work for you. »

You smile happily, placing the dress over your arm. You decide a little green scarf as well would complement the dress too. « Ah, Mama. » She turns back before she leaves, looking to you. « Erm… what day is it, Mama? »

« 20th of September, 1940? » She smirks. « Losing yourself again, Lumi? »

I think it's just references, not an explicit future of the Libertyverse. There's a GUMG version of liberty and the gang, but the GUMG world doesn't really fit with our version of Liberty so they're still different universes. Same way the Liberty in MGNQ thing GS attempted once doesn't make the actual Libertyverse part of the grimdark of the MGNQverse.

> « Sorry, I just feel a little nervous as all… »

« Aw… » Your mother smiles warmly, caressing your cheek. « You shouldn’t worry, Lumi. Things are looking up. We’ve thrown back the Nazis and the world could not be at a better peace. Things are just… »

« Perfect. » You smile back up at her. Then you hug her tightly. « Merci beaucoup, Mama. »

« Oui, avec plaisir. Do not worry yourself. Now quickly! » She breaks the hug and then she starts pushing you to your bath. « Make yourself pretty, maybe there’ll be a nice boy Papa will let you take home! »

Oh oui! Royal Air Force pilots hopefully, though you don’t mind native air force men, or… French Foreign Legion. You giggle happily. « Okay, Mama! »

> …

> …

You open the door to your home in the streets of Paris. You lean out of the door, a piece of toast hanging out from your mouth. There it is, the Eiffel Tower. You look back at your Mama. « I am going, Mama! »

« Oh, one more thing! » She walks over, then takes up your hair. « Now, quickly… » You can feel her rough but gentle hands quickly tie up your hair into a neat ponytail, tying it off with a big green ribbon. « Ah oui, adorable! » You grin happily at her, the toast nearly falling out from between your teeth. « Now go on, shoo! Your job depends on it! »

You nod, then step off the porch and set off. « See you at the parade, Mama! »

Now it’s time to get to work, of course there are a few things you could do beforehand if you’re quick…

The local orphanage feels like it was thrown directly out of New York and right smackdab into the middle of Paris. You step past the gate and into the yard where all the children play. Boys and girls of all ages, all connected by the loss of their parents.

And there you see Clarissa, wearing a bright green dress, a little black jacket, and white gloves, happily letting a pair of girls hang off her back while she runs around. “Here we go! Get out of the way, the pain train is coming, destination: you!” she yells. All the girls scream as Clarissa comes flying through.

Americans.

She trips and falls, skidding to a halt right in front of you. “Again, again, Auntie Clarissa!” they both yell.

Clarissa looks up at you, smiling. You can’t help but smile back at her. “Ah, later, kids.” They both frown, stepping off of her. “Let me talk to Lumi here real quick and I’ll get back to ya.” They both nod, then run off to join other kids in play. “Lumi, what’s the good word? I hear your Daddy is getting a medal.”

“One of the most prestigious, if not the most prestigious honors in the French military,” you say. “How are you doing, Clarissa?”

“Ah, the kids have just been a handful,” she says. “That don’t mean though that I don’t love ‘em as all. You should come by more, we could always use more help around the place.”

“I’d love to,” you say. “Say, Clarissa, er…” You cross your arms, narrowing. “Have you noticed anything strange?” you ask.

“Strange?” She scratches her chin. “What, like a protestant actually being passionate about something?”

“Besides that,” you say. “I mean…” You sigh. “Nevermind, it is nothing.”

“You sure?” She places her hand on your forehead. “You sure ain’t sick? Maybe we can have a cup of tea on me and uh…” You can see a hint of pink on her cheeks. “You know, I just don’t want you getting sick as all.”

“I still can’t believe it,” says Clarissa as she pours your tea into the cup. You sit in her room, watching over the yard as the two of you sit down at a little table. “Krauts are thrown back-“ she snaps her finger, “just like that.”

You nod. “Yeah. It is quite something.”

She smiles as she takes a sip of her tea. “And your Daddy. What he do to get his medal again?”

“Halted the German advance up one of the main roads into Paris,” you say. “The rest of his crew had abandoned him, but he remained in his Char B1 tank for six hours, firing until he expended his ammunition and bailed out. Destroyed six tanks and killed who knows how many soldiers in the process.” You smile happily, proudly even, boastfully, hopefully not arrogantly. “I believe he deserves it.”

“He deserves it ten times over,” she says. You take a sip of your tea, letting the warm taste tingle at your tongue. “You know, sometimes it just feels like it should’ve been much harder.”

“Why, we can count ourselves lucky,” you say. “After all, we-“

You grip your forehead. Agh! It feels like something just slammed a nail into it!

“Lumi?” Clarissa leans in. “Oh my God, are you okay?”

You wave her off. “It’s fine, it’s… it’s just a headache as well.”

“Oh, you are sick,” she says. She stands up then quickly takes you by the shoulders and hurries you to her bed. “Come on, sweetcheeks, get some rest, I’ll call in your work and let them know you aren’t coming.”

“But-“ You look back at her. “Clarissa!”

Clarissa frowns, sighing. “Okay, don’t say I didn’t warn you if you suddenly die of polio or something.” You roll your eyes. “Seriously, take care, honeybuns. And don’t press yourself okay?”

You nod. “Oui, oui! I must be off!” You head out the door quickly.

“Lumi!” You meet with Monsieur LaPetit at the café. « You’re late, we’ve got orders to fill, it’s the lunch rush, we got foreigners here too! »

« I’m sorry, Monsieur! » You quick wrap an apron on, trying to get out an explanation. « I woke up late, I had a headache, you know how it is, right? »

He shakes his head. Pfft, no. « Get to work, quickly! »

You rush out to the tables, grabbing a tray, a notepad, and a pen as well to write down the orders. It’s time to work!

Oh, it would be if you hadn’t tripped and fallen all over yourself. Your face slams into the floor. « Shit… my face. »

“Eh, ma’am. Are you okay?” You blink, then sit up onto your knees. You look up to see…

Oh. Oh… a pair of VERY handsome RAF pilots. Sharp chiseled features on their faces, strong muscles underneath those smart and well-cut uniforms, and smiles that could just melt your heart. Your face is red, and not from the bruising.

> “Yes, I’m fine!”

You smile, nervously. “Ah, oui, oui, I mean, yes yes! I’m fine, perfectly fine!” You stand up, dusting yourself quickly. “Just uh… quick er… how you may say trip as it were.” They both smile, bemused. “… how are you?” You cringe, ugh, is that the best you can do?

The first nods. “Well, uh… we were just waiting for our order,” he says.

“Oh, yes!” You bring up your notepad and your pen. “What will you have?”

“Two coffees, black please,” he says. He squints at you, smiling. “I must say, uh… mademoiselle is that how you say it?” You nod. “You have a very lovely dress today.”

“Oh, thank you, my…” Don’t say your Mama, don’t say your Mama. “Goodness, it was difficult pulling it out of the closet today, thank you, Monsieur…”

“Nodell.” He offers his hand, smiling as you shake it. “Marvin Nodell. This is my co-pilot. Nestor Sinclair. Nestor?”

Nestor smiles, his sharp moustache moving along like a wave as he grins a bit more subtly than Monsieur Nodell. “Nice to meet you, madam. Our coffees, please?”

“Oh yes, right away!” You quickly turn about and then run to the kitchen. “Two coffees!” You place the order and await the coffees arrival. You look around, as crowded as the place is, everyone but the two Officers seem to have their food already done. Vicky and Ellie must have had a field day. You sigh, sitting down in a chair and picking up a newspaper.

… Hmph. What kind of newspaper prints in Russian? You toss it away.

“Here are your coffees, Monsieurs.” You place down the tray keeping their cups of coffee afloat. They take them graciously, smiling to you as they take a few sips. “Enjoy!”

“Thank you!” says Monsieur Nodell. You smile happily, stepping away to the counter. Oh, those two are just completely melting your heart from just being themselves! Oh, you would let those two escort you home at night! You would let those two throw you into bed! Ohoho!

Ugh, another headache! You scratch your head, sighing deeply.

Your Mama comes in through the front door. « Lumi, quickly, the parade is almost about to begin! »

« Mama, it’s just a headache, honestly, I’m okay! » You wouldn’t miss your father getting the medal pinned on his chest for anything in the world. Not even those two cute RAF pilots, not even Frank Sinatra or Jimmy Stewart, not nobody not no-how.

« Well, fine. » She sighs. « But do not come crying to me when you faint and you worry the skin off of your father. »

« Okay, Mama. I’ll be with you soon, okay? » She nods, turning around to leave.

You quickly place down a few orders for other patrons whom come in and out of the café. Things are just hectic now that the parade is about to arrive.

Roll to shake off the illusion anyway as I am sure Lumi's subconscious is starting to fight back.

As I try to recall, Lumi's dad bailed on her when she was young.

It's all about the timing, man. In your day to day life, you don't spontaneously start thinking "Wait a second, I'm not suffering enough. This has to be a dream." Doubt has to build first, you can't just dice-check your way through story.

If you do experience something like that though you are in dire need of help, and you should schedule an appointment with the nearest therapist as soon as possible.

« Thank you, Monsieur! » Ah yes, Carmenere! Relatively recent too, it should be excellent to drink perhaps tonight or perhaps this year! You start down the road happily, smiling. Your Papa is going to love it. He always was a wine connoisseur.

And coming down the street now is the parade. You quickly muscle your way through the crowd and get up front to see the marching troops. Clad in the Free French blues, marching with rifles shoulder, they step in unison, eyes forward as you celebrate their sacrifice. You happily wave to them, continuing to walk along. You feel the ground rumble as well, then look down the line. The tanks!

You grin, running down to get up alongside them. First in line are the Cavalry tanks, the Hotchkisses, the R35s, the SOMUA S35s, all glorious vessels of French armored might!

And then the B1bis. Your Papa’s B1bis! He sits atop the turret, waving to everyone as they cheer at him.

True, but the Somua or even the FCM 36 were the better french tanks. The Char Bi was the boogie man when German saw that but they were easily overcomed.

and Fluff, they did had time to develop tank, it's just that French Tank manufacturing was stupidly ridiculous.

Not to mention that they focused most of their money and resources into a wall, obsolete tanks and long tank development.

> Climb up and meet your Papa!

« Papa! » You yell to him, waving your arm about. « Papa! It’s me! » You’re not sure if he can hear you over the monstrous sound of the engine. However, he looks down, and turns his shako up to see you.

« Lumi! My little lantern! » You get another spike to the head, a quick one but it’s there. You start climbing up the tank, with the help of the crew and the soldiers sitting atop it. « Careful, careful! » They happily boost you up next to him on the turret, and immediately the crowd cheers even louder when they see a war hero with his child. « What’s that? » He points to the wine bottle in your hands.

« For you, Papa! » You grin happily. He smiles, picking it up. His grin and his immediate motion to open it clearly say you’ve got it right.

« Thank you, Lumi! » He takes you in his arm, kissing you on the cheek and happily lifting the bottle for all to see. You can feel the thundering vibration of the tank beneath, which sends shockwaves and rushes up your body. Streamers and rice are thrown into the streets in celebration, as the horns and the trumpets play a march of music.

« For his service to the nation of France, and for exemplar courage beyond the call of duty, we present Gerard Berger the Legion of Honor. May he continue to serve France for years to come, and be the example set forth for all of our soldiers to follow in our country’s history. Hear, hear! »

The entire city of Paris is ablaze with applause as you, your Papa, and your Mama wave to them all. On your Papa’s immaculate dress uniform sits the Legion of Honor, the highest award France can give to a soldier in its service. You feel a tear come to your eye, you’re so proud of him. You can’t imagine…

You grab your head again, groaning quietly. Another pain.

Papa looks back to you, then his smile fades. « Lumi, are you okay? »

They could have but the tank business in france was shit, they often spent years on designing a tank because the French were willing to throw money at them for designing it and thus took their sweet time.

I mean you have three of the same types of tank with the same relative performance, the R-35, the H-35, and the FCM-36 to name a few.

and it wasn't even thinking outside the box, Charles De Guile understood speed was the key, however what people fail to realize is the fact that the French did not have a very large standing army. They themselves had lost a considerable amount of their population after the first great war. The French mandatory service length was roughly a year maybe a little more. They had to compensate for something especially the fact that France also suffered from the great depression and had limited military funding.

it's not the fact they weren't thinking 'outside the box' it just that with limited resources, money, and manpower they had to make due with other things.
>>
>>38072956
If he knew that speed was the Key, then I wished to hell he told Mongomery that!

Still, that wall was a monstrous investment of manpower, money and resources. It still didn't cover the flanks where Hitler just walked around the wall. The emplacement guns couldn't even turn properly if at all.
>>
>>38073071
I didn't say it was a good idea either, however they thought they could cut costs but leaving the mountainous area near italy alone because that is a natural wall.

the only open area was Belguim, IIRC, which which could be defended if necessary .

Also again, Even if Charles did told Mongomery told him that,, it would probably fall on deaf ears,

Also lack of communication and again, a fear of starting a war with Germany again and causing another world war.
>>
> « I just need to sit down. »

You motion them away. « I just need to sit down. » You quickly step over to a chair, then slouch into it. Your Papa and your Mama glance at each other nervously, but continue with the formalities. Your Papa especially is quite eager to shake hands with the Prime Minister and the President, as well give thanks to his crew who stuck by him even before the incident that made him famous.

And still, this headache, you really wish it would go away so you could enjoy this but it won’t.

> …

> …

The drive back home is calm at least. Mama and Papa continue to talk and playfully flirt with one another. All is well in the world.

The car pulls up into the garage, and all of you climb out. « I will get dinner started, oui? » You and Papa nod, happy to have some of Mama’s delicious cooking. « Lumi, you should go rest, I’ll send for a Doctor to come by and have a look at you, okay? » You sigh. Great, the Doctor. You nod at that, and to which Mama walks ahead of all of you into the house.

Papa looks down at you. « Try not to sloth around now, Lumi, it’s a sin after all. » Right, right…

That reminded me, When I was a kid, my dad took me to a reunion of the survivors of Market Garden operation. The U.S. vets and the British vets nearly started a full out brawl among each other over Mongomery's actions. > Help Mama in the kitchen.

You lean in through the doorway, watching as Mama cooks some pasta in a pot. « Mama, you need some help? »

She smiles, looking at you. « Are you not supposed to be resting, Lumi? » You shrug, pouting at her. « Okay, okay, help me with the sauce if you please. » You step on over to the counter and bring up a bowl where the ingredients for the white sauce are placed. « I must say, Lumi it has been quite the day. I feel wonderful. »

Another splitting headache.

« Lumi. » Your mother’s smile drops completely, then she kneels down to your level. « Honest, are you alright? I already called the Doctor. We can have you checked out. »

You blink.

« Mama. » You grit your teeth, hissing as you hold your head.

« Oh, Sweetie, sweetie, sit down sit down. » She gently hugs you, then places you down on the kitchen. « Let me get you a hot towel for your head, oui? » She turns to the hallway.

« Mama! » You reach out for her. « Mama… » She sits down next to you, staring at you with those warm green eyes of hers, the same ones you inherited. « I am so sorry, Mama. I ruined everything. »

She shakes her head. « No, no, baby. You are just fine. You are fine just the way you are. You are the light in our family, I know it. But even lights cannot be good if they are doused like you intend to be. »

« Mama, it’s not that, I… »

> « You’re not real. »

You hold your head, feeling the pain seep into your brain. « You’re not real. None of this is real, Mama, I’m so sorry.» She stares at you, completely silenced by the revelation. « I love you, Mama. But you died giving birth to me. Papa becomes a drunk, he even deserts from the battle when it happens, Mama! I-… » You sob, pressing your hands against your head. Something is sawing through your head with a dull blade. « Mama! It hurts! It hurts! »

She hugs you tightly. « It’s okay, Sweetie. It’s okay… » She presses her cheek against yours, absorbing the tears flowing from your eyes. « Even if I am not real, I still love you. »

« It hurts… » Your head pounds. You clutch at your Mama’s back, crying out. « Mama… »

And with that, your Mama begins to sing.

« Au clair de la lune,
Mon ami Pierrot,
Prête-moi ta plume
Pour écrire un mot.
Ma chandelle est morte,
Je n'ai plus de feu.
Ouvre-moi ta porte
Pour l'amour de Dieu. »

You sniffle, crying out against fate. The fate that took your sweet Mama, that drove your Papa to the bottle, and away from his tank and away from the war.

You feel the very Earth sink beneath you. It feels as if your eyes are being torn out.

Your sweet Mama…

Why, God. Why?

You tear the monstrous Black Mercy from your face and slam it down on the asteroid. It skitters, creaking in pain as it tries to get away. You stomp it with your foot, again, and again, and again. Blood splatters all over the roughshodden ground of the asteroid as you mercilessly destroy the it.

Finally, it is dead.

You cry, screaming so loudly that you can feel the very essence of rage, confusion, and tragedy shoot out throughout the universe. « Mama! » you scream. You smash your fist into the ground, crying, the tears coming down from your eyes. You gently prod your cheek, and find blood mixed in with the salty water coming from your eyes. « Mama ! » you cry again.

You kneel down, then hunch over. In little droplets the tears tap against the asteroid.

Now all Lumi needs is to have the indigo ring and blue ring and she'll have (at least temporarily) had contact with all the colers of the emotional spectrum.
>>

Tbh I would expect rage to be a primary force effecting anyone who fought free of a black mercy. I mean seriously, that shit is just not cool,
