“It still pisses me off that you didn’t freak out over Ro,” you tell Baron. “I mean, turns out she’s half bird. Crazy. But I flash a little bit of claw, and you bail out.”

“Okay, I’m sorry about that. She just… I really don’t have an excuse,” he says, obviously choosing to avoid explanation. “I shouldn’t have even been surprised. You looked spot on like your devil drawings.”

“Well duh,” you say. “But I don’t get why you had to freak out even if you didn’t. Rowan straight up told you that we’re not like, theologically related or anything,” you add. “It’s not like I’m going to steal your soul or like, make you sign blood oaths and stuff.”

“Yeah, I really can’t see you trying to pull something like that off,” says Baron, still looking pained. “I don’t have anything to say for myself except I’m sorry.”

You scrutinize Baron’s chagrined expression, trying to sense any kind of wavering insincerity that you should seize on. In the end, you determine the feelings you’re picking up from him and his general sincerity is sufficient for now. “All right,” you pronounce, sitting back in your chair a bit and glancing back to the fire.
>>
>>38091101

Baron tries to interpret this, but comes up a bit short. “All right?” he asks.

“I mean you’re still a dork” you explain, “but that doesn’t mean you trying to not be a dork isn’t cool sometimes.”

He nods, clearly relieved. “All right. Good. So… there’s a chance you won’t be mad at me forever,” he says.

You consider the situation as a whole before replying. Whether or not you’re mad at Baron, he’s just… he’s really normal. Like. If he couldn’t handle you being a demon, you don’t know how he would handle some of the other kind of worse things. He may like you, but for some things that’s just not enough. (+2 Stress: 25/100)

It’s not something you can ignore. “Baron, there’s just… there’s a lot of stuff about me you don’t know,” you say, kind of unwillingly. “Stuff you probably wouldn’t want to know.”

Baron leans forward and settles his elbows on his knees. It takes him a moment to think of a reply to your statement. Once he has one, his face becomes encouraging. “Do you want me to know?” he asks, giving an unsure smile.

>Eh. Probably not the best idea.

WE probably WANT him to know about our 'anger issues' and that we need to kill to stay calm or how we're kinda like a demonic Princess Anastasia. But we probably are also convinced that would all be WAY too much for someone to deal with, especially after the reaction our big reveal had earlier.

Maybe we'll tell him and Vic stuff about us tomorrow in-between Rowan talking about herself and starting with the least bad stuff first.

She didn't sympathize with them at all, she just gave them demonic shocktroops in exchange for occult power from Himmler's weird pagan buddies.

>>38091422
Going all-out was probably what did it. We should have done a bit at a time, showing off cool stuff like our FIRE WHIP between the mind-breaking horror.

"Like, y'know, I want to be able to talk about it. Stop with the whole hidey thing.

But some of the stuff is weird, even by magic standards, and I don't have a single clue where to start."

Pet the Reeber, make Baron agree that Reeber is totally the best dog ever before having him take off his glamour.

The real Impiriate is the one who survives. So far as we can tell, we're one contender of several.

To expand on the Anastasia example above, imagine if she really did survive the execution of the rest of her family and got out of immediate danger. NOW what?
>>
>>38091547
My problem with that set of responses is that while it is indicative of someone at odds with their own emotions, it's still such a moe thing to say. Also second part of the image set.

“It’s probably not the best idea,” you say in a low voice.

“That’s not what I asked,” he replies.

You’re not really sure yourself, now that you’re being made to think about it. You shrug noncommittally. “Maybe a little bit,” you admit. “The problem is that some stuff’s not normal even by magic standards.”

Baron thinks about this. “Like a demon person living with a bunch of angel people?”

You nod. “Yeah, stuff like that. There’s things about me that freak out people who already know everything. If I’m being honest, you don’t have much of a chance with a lot of it. But it’s not so much about you knowing as me just being able to talk about stuff with people.”

“I guess I really can’t say anything since I don’t really know what you’re not saying,” says Baron. “I don’t want you to think you have to pretend to be somebody you’re not. I may not know about magic or hell or whatever, but if you ever want to talk to people about stuff, I can do that.”

You snort. “It’s way too late to think about this kind of crap,” you say.

Baron looks to the darkened sky. “Maybe it is,” he says.

It would be kind of funny to completely fuck with him about magic stuff. "Hey, you know how I said I'm not likely to get you to sign a blood contract? Rowan is actually super likely to do that. Angels need to have ten contracts in order to earn their wings. I'm a landmaster so I'm worth all the souls in San Francisco. That's why she's already got her halo. Also Vik is kind of embarrassed about being a ghost but try not to bug her about it?"

You're missing the point. It's not our secret to tell. Demons aren't supposed to be out of hell. We're taking a risk telling some random humans that we're illegal immigrants.

This is why Ranthix had to check on something during the dance: make sure we weren't on the angel hit list.

Your gaze falls on Reeber. “Hey, want to see something cool?” you ask Baron.

“Is this a trick question?”

You take that as a yes. “Reebs, get over here,” you say, beckoning to your hound.

Reeber pops up immediately and leaps bodily into your lap, expertly situating himself across your legs. You rub his back. “So Reeber’s about the best dog ever, right?”

“Yes…?” says Baron.

“What kind of breed you think he is?”

“Until right now, I thought he was a German Shepard,” he says, bracing himself for whatever’s about to happen.

“Well, guess,” you say.

“What? Is he secretly a dragon?”

“That’s dumb. Guess better.”

He chuckles at his next guess. “Is Reeber an Arcanine?”

“A what?”

“Never mind. Just do whatever you’re going to do.”

“Reeber’s a hellhound,” you say, smiling broadly. “He’s trained and everything, so don’t freak out. He’s not going to do anything.”

Baron rubs his hands together. “All right, let’s see it,” he says, sounding more than a little nervous.

You give Reeber a reassuring pat on the back of the neck. “Show Baron who you really are,” you whisper.

With a flicker, Reeber is replaced with a significantly larger canine creature, composed of leathery muscle and sinew and with two swooping horns on its head. Spines jut out of his flesh at the joints, and his long jagged claws stretch out in lazy repose. Reeber’s segmented tail snakes out behind him as he turns to lick your face, happy at being free of his glamor.

You push his fat head away. He’s got bad dog breath. You stretch to look over Reeber’s back at Baron, struggling to rearrange yourself under the massive weight. The camp chair doesn’t agree with the two of you being on it at the same time, but whatever. “What do you think?” you say. “He’s like, a pure bred or something.”

You can tell Baron is more than a little intimidated by Reeber’s size, but at least he’s not running away. “That’s one hell of an emotional support companion,” he says in a weak voice.

“Yeah, he eats a lot,” you say, grabbing one of Reeber’s horns and guiding his head around with a gentle tug.

“Is everything around you secretly a giant demon monster?” Baron asks warily.

eh, she'd spent most of her life as the grungy kid on the streets. after everything went to hell and she lost her best friend it was time for a change in my opinion
>>
>>38092884
The quest could have gone in a completely different direction. We could be working to become the demon leader of San Francisco's underworld, assimilating as many gangs as possible.

Not that I'm against the current story, mind. But it would have been interesting.
>>
>>38092997
Well obviously that's the direction that it took.

But things could have come out a lot differently. We could have started up a demonic gang. Or been cleaning up the streets as a vigilante.

Not really upset or anything just having a sort of, "What could have been.." moment.
>>
>>38093021
>We could be working to become the demon leader of San Francisco's underworld, assimilating as many gangs as possible
we could have, but remember Malkor was already doing that at the time. eventually he would've either put a hit out on Sierra or told her to follow him or die. Plus ruling the demon underworld would put us on the Hallows kill list
>>
>>38093021
It's pretty clear from the knowledge we have now that we would have just gotten assassinated almost right away if we didn't have the Hollows' protection.
>>
>>38093084
>implying you can "just assassinate" Sakheris
>>
>>38093084
Or we'd have had Issac come in during the assassination attempt or some such... Or the assassin would have been Ranthix who would have tuned hand helped us build one bad ass fucking gang.
>>
>>38093128
Might have been that scrub at the harbor warehouse we fucked up early on. Without knowing what kind of demon he was or any of that she we might have had him as a tutor.
>>
>>38093127
>>38093128
It's like nobody remembers the dog walker. The faster hounds would have torn out Sierra's throat before Reeber could have done anything. Hell, the first fight would have killed us if Isaac hadn't been around.
>>
>>38093205
I'm not sure Languid actually planned for us to insert Sierra into the family so quickly actually... I'd have to go back and dig for that statement though.. and I'm lazy so I wont.
>>
>>38092731
>crack joke
ease him up a bit, don't go to sleep yet because we should better settle with baron 1 on 1 on the matter when we can.
>>
>>38093205
It's really all speculation anyway. If we had went on another path, we'd probably still be on thread 81, but with a different group of friends and a different series of fuck ups we barely escape from. I don't think Languid is enough of an asshole to just go "you die from this thing that happened in another timeline. Quest over. Go home."
>>
>>38093205
uh, was it isaac that saved us at the dog walker encounter? I don't remember if it was isaac or harvey that saved us from the dog walker with 'tactical ramming'.
>>
>>38093393
It was Harvey and Cass. Cass drove the car, Harvey pumped it full of angel magic and then shot the shit out of dog walker guy.
>>
>>38093393
Well the Dog walker was after Ro soo...
>>
>>38093393
Cass did the ramming, Harvey unloaded 2-3 clips of assault rifle ammo into him
>>
“Well,” you begin meaningfully, “I was wondering when you’d ask that question,” you say.

“Why exactly is that?”

“Because… there’s no easy way to say it, but you’re a demon, Baron Potter.”

Baron rubs his eyes. “Funny,” he says in a tired voice.

“Welp, I’m going to go to bed I guess,” you say. You give Reeber a light push, and he rolls off your lap onto the ground of his own accord, landing with a big thud. You step over his prone form and walk toward the single-person tent set up for you. “See you in the morning.”

“Good night,” Baron says, carefully keeping his eyes on the hellhound you left behind.

You retreat into your tent and flop down on your sleeping bag, taking a few moments to just lie still on the chill synthetic fabric and breathe. The air is cold away from the fire, and you’re happy for it.

So much crap going down. People freaking out. You freaking out a little bit. Drinking deer blood and talking to shadows and skipping school. What a day.
>>
>>38093476

But with all things considered, now you have two more friends – normal friends, not like angels or demons or whoever – who you can talk to about things. (-5 Stress: 20/100) Maybe not about all the things, but outside the Hallows, you would rather never talk to anybody about some things anyway.

All this business has left you tired. Thinking about it makes you tired. Thinking about thinking about it makes you tireder. More tired.

You fall asleep without realizing that’s what you’re doing.

Dim light awakens you. You find yourself sprawled on the floor of your tent, sleeping bag completely disregarded. Groggily, you sit up and wipe the sleep off your eyes and slobber off your mouth. Gross. Weak daylight shines against the walls of your tent, demanding you awaken. And also you’re pretty damn cold.

You’re not in your room. What were you doing again? Oh yeah. Camping and stuff. You remember last night. Vikrama and Baron know about you being a demon. Aw yeah. Score one for you, you got stuff done.

You smell… bacon. Yes. You take a second to ruffle your hair into perhaps a more appealing formation, and stumble out from your tent. You’ve got a whole day with your friends to figure out.

Phone conversation with Waldric thread #23

You guys a shit.
>>
Stress: 0/100

You saunter out and find Vikrama watching the stove. She’s wearing a formless hoodie and a pair of jeans – perfect camping clothes.

She brightens when she sees you coming over. “Good morning, darling,” she says.

You don’t say anything and instead follow your nose. “Bacon,” you say, closing in. “You mind?”

“Sure. Plates should be around here somewhere,” she says.

“Too late,” you say, stealing two strips from the sizzling stovetop.

Vikrama barely manages to try to stop you. “It’s hot!”

You avoid her warning hands and drop the deliciousness your mouth. They’re still boiling and crackling as you chew. So good.

Her panic becomes a controlled neutral expression as you lick the sizzling grease from your fingers. “I’m not sure they were done cooking,” she says.

“Eh, close enough.” You notice her strange expression. “I’m good at eating stuff,” you explain. “By the way, where’s Rowan?”

Vikrama looks upward. “She said she was going to stretch her wings. I wasn’t really awake all the way when she left, so I suppose she could be anywhere. Baron’s still asleep I think.”

“Hm,” you say. “So. Quick question. Would you be okay if I didn’t look totally human today?”

She answers your question with another question. “Do you actually change your form into a human form?”

You sit down on a log and prop your chin up on your hands. “Partially,” you say. “Like. I can turn my claws and skin normal, but it’s not really my resting appearance.”

“You said partially change?”

“Well, I can’t like, make my horns go back into my head,” you say. “I hide those with magic.”

Vikrama considers this as she throws some bacon on a plate. “Ro told me how uncomfortable it is hiding her wings all the time. She said it was like saran wrapping her arms.”

“Yeah, it kind of sucks,” you say. “So….”

“You don’t need my permission. We’re all grownups here,” says Vikrama.
>>
>>38095116
“It’s what he’s going to do,” says Waldric. “Meckor was sent here to die. No one on the other side thought he would actually be able to subdue his fief. Meckor, though, decided to make the best of it. He knew the only way to take control of the territory was through subversion. If the populace didn’t realize he was in control, he would have free reign.”

“So… he decided to be a crime lord?” you ask.

“For starters. But he relied on Nabuth,” Waldric says. “And after that, Cordeliate. They understood how to pull the strings and make things work in the shadows. Meckor is a great leader, but he’s military. He’s not cut out for intrigue on this scale, not without resorting to overt force,” he explains. “Meckor’s lack of subtlety is how he wound up getting sent down here in the first place.”
None of that says they controlled him, just that he used what they could do to further HIS plans. You sir are the shit
>>
>>38095153

“Cool,” you say, shrugging off your human veneer. You crack your knuckles and stretch, happy to be out in the daylight for once.

Your friend looks you over, as if trying to understand something. Her gaze makes you feel uncomfortable. “What?” you ask.

“The way you look reminds me of a panther,” she says. “Kind of a feline predator vibe.”

“Uh. Okay?” You have gazed upon yourself many a time, and never would you have compared yourself to a cat.

“Or… maybe a scorpion panther hybrid,” she says.

“How about like, a cobra?” You try to show off your sharp teeth without looking like you’re showing them off.

“No, I don’t think so. Maybe if you didn’t have arms I’d say cobra.”

“Well, I’ll settle for scorpions. Scorpions are pretty badass,” you say.

“Does your tail stinger thing produce venom?” she asks.

Tail stinger? You bring your tail around, and look at the clawed end thing of it. It’s not much of a stretch to call the end a stinger, but as far as you’re aware, you’ve never poisoned anything with it. “Not yet, I guess,” you answer. You lift your upper lip to give her a view of your canines. “These guys are poisonous when I want, though.”
>>
Vikrama looks worried. “What would happen if bit your tongue on accident?”

You snort. “I’m immune to my charms,” you say in an over-elegant voice. At least you think you are. Now you’re kind of worried too. (+1 Stress: 1/100)

The sound of conversation must have woke Baron up, because his tent zips open and he steps out a moment later, squinting against the daylight. It takes him a second to see you and Vikrama. With a concentrated effort not to look like he’s not looking at you or your slightly shifting shadow, he walks over to join the both of you, though he opts to stand instead of sit. “Hello everybody,” he says calmly.

“Good morning,” you reply, not sure if Baron’s remaining fidgetiness is bad or if it’s good he’s trying to overcome it.

“When did you guys go to bed?” Vikrama asks.

“A while after you and Ro did,” Baron says. “Me and Sierra had a chat.”

“What time is it, anyway?” you ask.

Baron checks his watch. “Eight o’clock. We were up till about three.”

You groan. This is a violation of your eight-hours and thirty minutes optimal sleep cycle.

“It’s impossible to sleep in on campouts,” says Vik. She offers Baron a plate with bacon laid out on it, which he happily accepts.

“Thanks Vik,” he says, poking at the bacon with a plastic fork.

“Hey, check this out,” you say, snatching a piece of raw bacon from Vikrama’s supply. Before anybody can say anything, you toss it up into the air and lash out with a controlled wave of hellfire. (-2 PP: 31/33) The heat engulf the strip, and it falls down aflame. You pluck the smoking meat out of the air before it hits the ground, and with a smile, bite half of it off. “How about that, huh?”

Baron’s already seen you throw some fire around, but he’s still impressed. Vikrama is even more impressed. “You can throw fire!” she exclaims.

“Yep,” you say. “I’m pretty much a firebender and stuff.”

“Do something else,” she demands, giddy from the revelation.
>>
>>38096001

In reply, you start snapping sparks out of your fingertips, sending up puffs of flame, and waving around burning hands. You don’t really have any fine control of fire to appease her continued requests, so before long you wind up escalating to the fire whip. With one lash, you relight the campfire. The rest you let off in the air, each crack exploding through the quiet morning fog of the forest. (-7 PP: 24/33)

Vikrama claps at the end. “You could get into stage performance with this kind of thing,” she says.

Your fiery show catches Baron’s interest in more than just flames, however. He begins to suspect that that you might not be giving them the entire picture. “Sierra, exactly what kinds of other things can you do?”

Although there’s some stuff about blood or making people go suicidal that’s not really something you’d want to share, you decide to give them the low down on pretty much everything. Better to get it all out of the way now than not tell them and have it come up later. Honesty is a pretty good policy.

The only thing you play down is your kind of weird obsession with blood. Like, you do compare yourself to a shark when it comes to smelling blood, but you don’t get into the whole thing with you consuming the blood of your foes to regain your strength. And the whole shark comment is kind of written off since you’ve been comparing yourself to scorpions and cobras to aid in your discussion.

You’re more worried about telling them about emotional stuff than the other stuff, but fortunately they take it pretty well. It creeps Baron and Vikrama out a little, but since you’ve never used your powers on them, they don’t really understand the full scale of what you’re saying.

Baron takes the shadow things without too much surprise, though Vikrama makes you promise to do some shadow puppetry junk for her later. There’s some confusion on how you’re able to control something that’s not really even a thing, but it doesn’t take much to convince them that it doesn’t matter if you can do it anyway. The rest of you being able to step through corners and whatever, you say you’ll just have to show them later.

“And last and best, every time I whistle,” you say, “a hellhound appears at my side.” You let out a high-pitched whistle to demonstrate.

A moment later, Reeber shoves out from Baron’s tent and trots over, completely glamor free.

“Oh my god,” Vikrama says, taking a step back from the huge hound as it passes by.

Baron manages a chuckle. “Don’t be too impressed. It’s just Reeber,” he says.

You give Baron an askance look as your faithful hellhound joins you by your side. “What was he doing in your tent?”

He's 110% loyal, he has a sensitive side, he can hold his own in a fight, and he accepts us for who we are but isn't afraid to tell us when we fucked up. Ranthix is the best ship.
>>
>>38097101

“Us guys have to stick together,” he says, laughing sheepishly. “But seriously, he wouldn’t stop following me around after you left. But hey, I didn’t freak out, huh? Not everybody would have not freaked out,” he tells you.

Vikrama looks fearfully at the hellhoud. “Reeber?” she says in a little voice.

Reeber turns his head sideways, tongue lolling out from his jagged maw.

“Roll over,” she orders.

Reeber looks up at you.

“Do as she says,” you tell him.

Reeber lazily drops to his stomach and rolls over, but only makes it half way before giving up and just lying there.

“Oh my god. It really is Reeber,” she says, amazed and alarmed. “But he’s usually so furry and small! He’s got a nice coat! He’s not twice as big as I am! How is this… this super monster Reeber?”

“Because it’s freaking magic,” you say, laughing.

Baron shakes his head, grinning. “So besides summoning hellhounds, is that everything?” he asks.

“Well, there’s one more thing,” you reply. “I have cool nature powers. The Russian park ranger guy that I hang out with sometimes is actually a druid. He’s like my Captain Planet sensei person.”

“Ha! I knew your work-study excuse was a load of crap,” says Vikrama, surprisingly thrilled with being right on this matter.

“You said cool nature powers,” says Baron. “Powers with a plural ‘s’.”
>>
>>38096959
I am aware, I meant that we need more info about him in general before making him a husbando.
>>
>>38097124

“Basically I can summon animals and live forever,” you say.

“You’re immortal?” Vik asks.

“Yeah, pretty much,” you say.

“Okay, so you can pretty much do anything you want,” Baron surmises.

You think about this and then shrug. “Yep, that’s the gist of it.”

Vikrama follows through to the implications. “So in a thousand years, you’ll still be running around eating bacon and making bad puns?”

“Assuming I don’t fall off a cliff or get cancer or something,” you say, “then yeah.”

“That’s awesome,” she says.

“I know, right?” you say, smiling.

At about this moment, a huge pair of silvery wings swoops down from the sky. Rowan alights in the clearing, folding her wings behind her and adjusting her fancy leather flight jacket – a complicated article of clothing with a bunch of buckles and buttons on it, and two ‘sleeve’ kinds of things on the back for a Seraph’s wings. Cassandra made it for Ro after she got wings, but she doesn’t get much chance to use it – honestly it looks kind of weird if you don’t have the wings to fill it out.

Ro walks over, breathing hard from her recent flight. She pauses nearby to rest on her laurels. “Hey guys,” she says, her voice breathless. “What’s up?”

“You know, add a choir and some spotlights, and you’d be making one hell of an entrance,” you observe. You are jealous of wings. “Seriously though, I used my Jedi mind trick force powers on Vik and Baron so they don’t hate me anymore,” you say.

“I’m pretty sure that’s not what’s happening here,” Baron says.

“Well… must’ve… worked,” Rowan says between breaths.

“So much melodrama,” says Vik. “I love it. Would you like some bacon?”

“Just a sec,” Ro says, feeling her way toward a camping chair and falling into it, her wings sagging. “Oh my gosh.”

You go over and sit in the chain next to her, leaving your friends to their own devices. “How was the flying? See anything cool?”

“Too cloudy,” Ro breathes. “Got lost.”

You notice that Rowan looks like she’s been caught in a light rain. You guess flying through clouds for a while at speed would get wet. “Well that sucks,” you say.

“Still fun,” she replies.

“You suck,” you answer, changing tactics.

“Shut up.”

“Meh. Whatever,” you growl. “So you want to do anything? Because it’s pretty much mission accomplished so far.”

She doesn’t look like she wants to talk right now. Probably need to give her a couple minutes.

Hey?

“You’re way out of shape,” you say, poking Rowan in the shoulder. “You need to get out more often.”

“I can’t - ”

You don’t give her the time to finish. “I mean, seriously. Can’t even fly for half an hour without almost dying. Your dad would probably be able to tell you some wing exercises or something.”

“Sierra,” Ro says, pleadingly.

You laugh. There’s nothing Ro hates more than taking Isaac’s advice about anything. “I’m just kidding,” you say. “But anyway, I’m thinking we take the muggles out on a hike. I know all the cool spots and cool trees and all the vistas. We’ll find a sweet spot and have the official angels and demons Q&A session. Vikrama’s full of questions and Baron wants answers.”

“Sounds good,” Ro says.

“Cool. Well you chill out, I’ll mobilize the troops.” You leave Rowan to go discuss the plan with your friends. Events are pleasing to all involved, and about half an hour later everybody’s ready to go. You lead the way out, and spend pretty much the rest of the day out and about, showing the guys cool stuff like wild animals and redwoods with weird looking roots. Eventually you get up high enough on deer trails to this one specific overlook that gives a view going all the way to the ocean. It’s pretty slick.

You wind up picnicking and snacking in the glade, and you and Ro wind up chatting at length with Baron and Vikrama, initiating them into the magical world of magic. All has gone according to plan.

You get back to camp late, after the sun’s already set, and wind up going to sleep way late again. Vikrama literally wants to know about everything, about stuff you’ve never even thought of before. Luckily Rowan knows all of everything.
>>
>>38098784

The whole you being a weird demon mix does come up, but without Vik or Baron really understanding the whole demon archetype thing first hand, you don’t know if that really means as much to them as it should. Whatever, it’s not really that important to their understanding anyway.

The morning comes quickly, and before you know it, it’s time to go back to your not camping life. Baron has mostly overcome his initial shock, though you can tell on some level this all still freaks him out. As for Vikrama, you think she might be obsessed with everything magical, but she puts on a good show of appearing normal and not putting undue pressure on you or Ro.

Anyway, after you drop the two of them off, you enjoy a brief moment of silence with Rowan.

“That was fun,” she says.

“Yeah, worked out kind of okay,” you agree. You drive on for a moment in quiet. It’s still morning, but you’re definitely not making it to school today. You wince at the idea of making up the classwork.

Ro looks over at you. “Do you think telling them was the right decision?”

>Sure. Why not?
>Well I'd want to know if I was them.
>You're a little late on asking that one.
