[X] Grilling the Eriadne etc

"Battles are fought on the field, yet wars are won in the mind". --The Founder, originator of House Antioch

I am Maria of House Antioch, a house with lots of history as I just found out!! No, really, my legs are shaking from the things we learned as Eriadne and I file out of the hall into the corridor, peering at the mass of girls to find where our friends -cause that's what they are- might possibly appear.

Eriadne looks at me sideways, half her attention on the crowd still pushing out the doors we're standing at. Is there something on my face? I probably look like a complete mess and she's embarassed to be seen together with me. Great, I really, really should have thought about that; Now she's probably trying to get rid of me politely. Suddenly behaving like I had falling sickness can't have helped this any, and she's way too smart to think I wasn't just lying to her. How come I do everything wrong when I'm around her? Of ourse, the answer is obvious; It's the difference between us that really shows how terrible I really am compared to her. This is never going to get better, is it? Wait, what did she ask…?

1/?
>>
"--think of this information, Lady Maria?" Distracted on top of cowardly and ugly. Dammit, me. I quickly scan over what my surface mind recorded, cursing at the speed at which such information gets lost. 'Taking into consideration what we saw up to this point, what did you think of this information, Lady Maria?' Ah, found it! "Taking into consideration"… hmmm. Of course even I know what that means, but really, I have no idea how to really answer that.

"Uh, it was amazing!". It was, but that wasn't exactly a non-dumb thing to say anyway. Still, Eriadne nods, turning her attention towards the crowd again while I-- whirl around, arms already crossed in front of my face, Helena falling down with a squack, all before I even realize what I'm doing.

How did Teacher Harlan say? Never assume a day's gonna get worse before you've laid down on the headsman's block.

Cursing myself I rush forward, which causes Helena to shy back and bump into Liliana, who first looks at the girl at her feet and then at me before grinning, her eyes twinkling with that all-too-knowing light.

"Both a bit on the jumpy side, eh?" She helps her friend up, whispering something in her ear, but I'm distracted noticing that people have begun to pool around the four of us. Terrible for defending, worse for remaining unnoticed; It really is not getting better no matter how hard I try. I hastily mumble something in place of apology and turn on my heel, taking slow shallow breaths while forcing the blood rushing to my face to go back down. Saints, but I feel dizzy.

Eriadne's gaze is calm, though… is that a small twitch at the left corner those lustrous lips? Hmm, nah, that would be kind of strange, why would she smile at something like that? Her eyes though seem to shift between a deep blue and some other colours I can't quite make out.

"Ey, 'might be cozy to just stand round the place, but I gotta friend here who's been talkin' my ears off 'bout honey combs the entire time". Liliana's… presence… envelops me as she steps closer with Helena in tow, the blonde trying to glare daggers at me but really just looking kind of miserable. Ye gods, I'm terrible.

"Lady Maria, she has a point. It might be prudent to relocate to the dining hall, unless you have some other business to take care of?" Eriadne looks at me questioningly. Hey, are you just ignoring Evangelyne's existence now?

"Uhm, maybe we should wait for Eva--" I begin, but Liliana interrupts me.

"Eeh, Senra's gonna be just fine don't you worry. Come on, Helena", tugging her friend along. Eriadne scowls at that, but waves at me to follow. Well, can't just refuse, right?

"Senra, yes? So are you another one of her… acquisitions?" Whoa, Eriadne, that's kind of a rude way of putting it!

Liliana just smiles up at her in a way that seems completely… off… for her doll-like face and small stature, shrugging.

"Well I wonder, eh?"

"Oi, will y'all keep pretending I'm thin air or could I getta small 'hello'?" I don't quite jump at Sora's deep silken voice, but I'm close, and going by the way the twins tense up as I turn to them at least they seem to have noticed. Somehow, I'm fairly certain that this time they *were* sneaking, not that I have any evidence other than that I should have noticed them earlier after; This kind of thing should be one of the few skills I might possibly be somewhat decent at.

Sora doesn't seem to reveal anything either way as she falls into place just a little behind and between Eriadne and I.

"So…", she claps me on the shoulder with one hand and seems about to do the same to Eriadne before noticing the noble's expression and turning the motion into an awkward wave before she fumbles around with her collar for a few seconds. It seems like an odd thing to wear, but who am I to judge?

"How's tha situation? Ain't not seen much of ya'll today". I shrug, the weight of her hand still on my shoulder. I don't usually like being touched so much outside of training -not least of all because it makes me feel like I'd be too slow to respond to a threat- but really, I don't mind it with her. Or Eriadne, but that's another story of course.

Bump again.
>>
>>
>>38147878
Atavism is a Will Discipline related to being preternaturally stronger ("beastly", hence the name) than you'd normally be as going by your natural potential. It's what allows girls like Maria or women like Talan to be considered combatants, rather than liabilities, though cultivating it - or any other will ability for that matter - is highly stressful and demanding*, causing most militaries to still be mostly dominated by males, while women tend to fulfil more specialized tasks such as air support or sabotage.

TL;DR: -4 STR is canon, female Fighters are Multi Attribute Dependent.

"Hm? Just kind of normal, I guess?", I say, not quite knowing how to match her cool yet easy way of doing things yet. There is just this… it's hard to say. There is this odd type of energy about her in everything she does, like she had no worries about embarassig herself or falling out of her role, and somehow, she really never does. It's odd cause if I did things this way I'm certain I'd just end up with a complete mess worse than what I'm in now and look totally silly besides. Some people have it, others don't. Guess that j-- wait, what? I blink, head whipping around, trying to figure out what just happened just as Sora pulls back her finger again to… poke my cheek. What?! Why would she do that?!

"Oi, don't cha be goin' all gloomy like on me, t'was just a lil' question", she says, her look a bit hard to read but seeming mostly amused. AMUSED? Really? Before I can even comment properly - whatever that would be cause, really, what do you even say to this kind of thing - however, Liliana's high somehow way too smooth voice cuts in.

"Ey, she's a bit like that. Super cozy girl once ya warm her up a lil', 'cause otherwise it's jus' ice n' snow aaaaall the time!", Liliana says, grinning from ear to ear at the much taller girl - who seems to notice her for the first time - while waving her hands. Hey, don't just talk over other people like that. Shouldn't you show a bit more respect? Uuuooh, I guess it's a bit hard to respect me; Leadership wasn't ever a very strong area for me, though I do okay when I've known the people for a while. Guess I'm not really a leading-"type", if that makes sense, even if people do like to listen to me for some completely insane reason.

"And yer… who?", Sora says, already beginning to mirror Liliana's grin. Whoa, it's almost as if a completely new kind of energy had suddenly begun flowing in here. It's a little scary!!

"Name's Liliana of House Antioch, chosen of Yulemai. Who'd you be?" Liliana peers up at the taller girl, looking her over, lips work soundlessly. If I didn't know better I'd have sworn she was trying to look into her soul, though Sora doesn't seem disturbed at all, instead evenly returning the orange-haired - really, how did I not find that colour odd before - girl's stare.

"Well look who's being all fancy like. Quite tha mouthful for a half-portion like yerself. Fine, if we're doin' fancy, Imma be Sora Allegra Violetta Capriciosa Rossa, the 3rd of her name, Second Degree Resplendent Cognitant, hopeful novice of House Nefesh and most hallowed property of Nagrascant's Balance, his grand eminence the resplendent God-King, may be live as he lived forever and ever and may his path be our path in wisdom and strenght as it has since the beginning of time", Sora says, her voice just *switching* in the middle of her speech.

Uhm… wat. Liliana seems almost as surprised as the rest of us - that must be the first time I've seen her that way - as she blinks , almost running into Eriadne who must've missed a few steps, too. I'm not even sure why it feels so odd, but having Sora talk like that just really seems to go against everything I've believed in, ever!

"Jus' pullin' yer leg, 'Sora' 's just gonna be all fine with really. Ain't that muchova decorum person really". Just like her lazy drawl the honey-like richness of Sora's voice has suddenly returned as she smiles at Liliana, who catches on quickly and grins again.

"You're good people, Sora. Let's get along, ey?" A small side glance at Eriadne lets me see a bit of… joy and… concern? Why would she be concered? The moment passes quickly though as Liliana and Sora grasp hands.

"Friends, ya?" Liliana nods.

"Aye. Friends". Oh ye gods.

Eriadne sighs, though probably only I heard it and mumbles something to soft for even me to understand, something about "influence" and "trouble", maybe? Hey, why are you so concerned suddenly? Someone pulls sleeve but I'm distracted by Liliana whispering into Sora's ear. Probably wasn't important anyway.

Soon enough we've found two tables close together and Sora and I get to adding more. Ha, we must be looking a bit silly, but my friends are around so it should be okay, though one girl with light blue - yes, blue, though considering Liliana I really shouldn't be surprised - hair looks at us from behind a pillar, silent disapproval written across her face. Uhm, okay, sorry girl but we really need those tables. You're not going to expect us to sit apart, right? Following a feeling I half-turn my head to look behind me, seeing Evangelyne approach, Erato and Thalia in tow.

"Oh, you were already making space for us? That's lovely, thank you dear". I try very hard not to frown, though my mood improves as she lets go of the twins and after patting Helena on the head moves to help us. Irritating she may be sometimes, but I don't think she does it because she wants to be that way and really, she is great when it counts. Soon enough we're all seated, Eriadne opposite from me with Sora to my right and someone else to my left. Hmm, what to say, what to say… oh!

"Uhm, Eriadne, what did you learn, like, before you came here?" Okay, that came out lame, but it could have been worse. Eriadne pauses and sets down her dining sticks - I tried to get a glimpse at those teeth again, but she eats way too properly to ever show them - onto her plate in an X shape, furrowing her brows.

>>
"That just so happens to be a somewhat difficult thing to answer, Lady Maria. One could say that I was educated in all matters neccessary to succeed the family house and business, though that would, I believe, hardly do your curiousity justice". Somehow one the jade sticks has found its way back into her hand as Eriadne waves it through the air, possibly not quite aware of what she's doing going by how she squints at it a second later and almost drops it back onto the plate. Huh. She looks at me questioningly - yes, I saw that if that's the question - before continuing.

"A large part of my studies was dedicated towards accounting and understanding the flow of money. Such a thing is vital to an heir as much of our influence derives not only from the burden of rule entrusted to us by the Sun, but also the adroiteness with which we do business. Speaking of which, that reminds me to write to my aunt… I mean, Eminence Kirlian and tell her that I've arrived safely… hopefully the matters of succession will be sorted".

"Aren't you the heir why would they need a new one Eriadne that's strange?!" Helena's question is quickly followed by a series of choked noises from down the table, and I'm glad I didn't have any food to swallow or I'd probably be doing the same.

"I'm dead, Helena. Gone. A ghost could never lead a house". Eriadne's voice is calm and even though I feel like she's straining really hard to keep the ice out of her voice. Eeep! There is a little silence before Evangelyne speaks up.

"Talking of writing, remember the person we met this morning? I asked around a little, and it seems like the sparkwire network's been blown up by some rebels though they are repairing it if the air mail is to be believed".

I turn as Sora taps me on the shoulder, leaning towards me.

"I 'eard summa dat. They be wantin' more independence or some such. Whatcha thinkin' of those folks, Maria?"

Rebels are Taliban-tier retards who mass murder the people they want to "free" from the "oppressive" government that almost everyone has no real issue with.
Because the world must be anarcho-capitalist.
>>
>>38190439
Yep, rebels a shit and are scum, they deserve everything Talarn will do to them and more.
>>
>>38190439

I really don't think Maria knows much about them, medieval guardsmen typically aren't very well informed in politics, nor are medieval thirteen-year-olds.
>>

She probably had because this isn't a medieval setting it's approximately the 1800s through some tech is more or less advanced because of magic.

She wouldn't need to know about them personally, they blew up a massive communications network, doubtless killing many in the process, thats once hell of an atrocity.

>>
>>38190499
I just used medieval on a whim, point is kids weren't much more informed in the early 20th century (sure they got schooling, but generally that consisted of practical stuff and old history).
>>
Did Maria go to school before this? All we seem to hear about is her guard-training and stuff, which seems like it was pretty time-consuming, and if she went to school you'd think she'd be a bit more used to girls. But on the other hand she seems too familiar with the environment and general workings of this place for it to be her first contact with an organized education system.
>>
>>38190529
19th-century anon and you really need to remember that the rebels get a lot of talk from all the retard shit they do with blowing people up.
It's like expecting a modern 13-yearold to not know about terrorists.
Which is ridiculous I knew about that shit when I was around that age there's no reason for Maria to not know about them.

>>38190551
She went to a school for guard training full-time and it covered her basic education.
Nothing as in-depth as the education her friends got though.
>>
>>38190551
>Did Maria go to school before this?
Yes, for a short time before she switched to a small tutoring group that covered most things due to how, as you said, time-consuming the whole thing is. So yes, she knows how it works, she's just not been to >>38190566 /school/ school for a while.

Nominal imperium governed mostly by a number of large royal houses, the majority of which are - like Eriadne's - inhuman and control a key industry such as - in the case of Talan's boss - communications, which is the backbone of their power.

t's both. I follow the advice most RPG books give in only requiring rolls when achieving the outcome requires effort. No it isn't, dude stop believing your own crap and listen to us, your players, we can wait, we have waited more then that in the past, and we will wait more then that in the future.

So go deal with real life, get your computer issues and things sorted, and return to us when you can, we'll still be here waiting to play, and don't you dare ever think otherwise.

Please anon, it's obvious he just wants this over with. Since he never actually 'catches up' as it were, he's probably got the guilt of not updating 24/7 at this point. >>
>>38214375
>It's ridiculous to hope AToW would survive a hiatus.
It's actually the opposite... Dude have you not learned yet that we don't mind all that much the pacing issues? We can wait, god knows we wait for other quests, we'll wait for yours and you. Stop being such a downer on yourself, you don't need to get fast to be a QM, you need to be gud, and you are when you put your mind to it and the universe doesn't screw you over.

Don't kill the quest because of this, use the downtime to write out more notes and prep for returning to it when you've got a working computer again, but don't be stupid and burn bridges when you've no need to.
>>
>>38214459
>it's obvious he just wants this over with
No it isn't, its very clearly the opposite if you know him.

>Hex is clearly not cut out to run quests.
That's a load of shit, quests don't need to meet some arbitrary speed requirement, those 'standards' exist nowhere except in the heads of anons who like fast paced quests. There are many many quests on other boards, on other websites and mediums that are as fast as this or slower, does that somehow make them not quests?
>>
>>38214375

>>
So what do you mean by no ability to make a fresh installation then?

>>38214375
>It's ridiculous to hope AToW would survive a hiatus.
If I could I would drive over to you and slap you for how stupid you are being. It's ridiculous to think AToW wouldn't survive a hiatus, and you are being ridiculous for thinking otherwise. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater Hex, go deal with real life and come back to us and your quests when you've a PC that won't burst into flames, we'll be here waiting warmly, like we always are, because we're not going anywhere, and neither are you.
>>
>>38214491
Hey, I don't want it to end, but with the difficulties he's got and the (deserved) shit he sometimes gets for it, it's tough not to read >>38214375 as giving up on this. Lasted longer than I would.
>>
>>38214375
>It's ridiculous to hope AToW would survive a hiatus. Might as well hope I get as fast as a good QM suddenly.
Hey Hex, stop being stupid for a second and think, how long have you been running quests, how long have we been playing quests with you? How does this suddenly change things? It doesn't, I don't care about how long it takes, I just like reading and playing your quests, and you like writing them as much as things get in the way to conspire against you, so don't think a hiatus would doom everything and the world is ending. Take what time you need to fix things and keep on questing, I know I'll be here whenever you get back, I've waited much longer for other quests and I've faith in you.

Hex obviously knows anons love AToW despite its faults, as evidenced by how much discussion it still gets despite new information and situation coming at a trickling pace. He's also obviously frustrated/mad at himself for how slow it's going. With that information it's perfectly reasonable to infer that the whole quest is weighing on him.
Maybe you should try thinking about how your QM feels instead of selfishly demanding more quest at the exclusion of everything else.

Well that nearly killed him several times and he only became Papa-N again after beating it 3 times so I would not advise that.

You can also fix the resolution a bit too, I believe.

I had to go like a whole year with a shitty computer I could only get to run in safe mode so I found a lot of ways to get around it's problems. Only thing I couldn't get to work was video files to play completely right so whenever I had to watch anime I had to resort to streaming.

It's most likely Helena's Existential Deviancy kicking in full force to make up for lost time.

Helena was mentioned by name twice though, I mean I guess it could be her, but I think there's someone else being spoopy here.

[X] Cautiously disapproving.

Danger. That's the first thing I feel once Sora's question's out. Something is going on, and whatever it is, I'm not going to like it.

Two knives in rage, slashing traits primary. Chairs light enough to fly five paces, lethal take down range two paces. Candle within reach, use for distraction advised. Pillar within three heartbeats. Cover for two perso-- alright, that's enough. Nobody's going to get assaulted here dammit, so shut up, me.

I set down my fork with care and quickly pinch the skin between my right thumb and forefinger, the hair on my neck almost immediately settling down, as does the - right now really unwanted - storm of information.

"Something the matter, dear?" I tense, my *Will* crashing against Evangelyne's before I can help myself. The grey-haired girl jumps in her seat, then looks away. Eeep, I really really need to stop doing that; It was really unfair to her and Pa would hate to see me lose control like this. Yes, the things she does make a bit mad sometimes but I don't think she really wants to be this way. I'll have to apologize for this somehow later.

It's my turn to jump as two of Sora's fingers find their way between my ribs. She really doesn't care about manners sometimes, huh. This will take some time getting used to I guess. I blink and turn to her.

"Oi, dont'cha wanna say or…"

I just shake my head.

"Uhm, no, that's not it. It's just, like, a bit complicated, I guess? Like, I heard they just kill a lot of people and that's something I cannot call good but Pa said that it's good to always get the full picture. Even if they're wrong; I'm pretty sure they are, really, but even if they are wrong I think it's still important that we look to understand them… something like this. Does that make sense?" Phew, I juuust barely avoided tying my own tongue into knots there.

I peer across the table out of the corner of my eye, trying to not be noticed. The look Eriadne gives me is a bit hard to make sense of, but Sora nods slowly, looking satisfied with my answer.

"Guess so, ya. Yer a smart one, Maria. Ain't not any day I seen a girl give sucha good answer at yer age, damnation, even many o' tha olda folks be all wrapped up in their own lil' problems tryna figga out what's what". Sora smiles while waving her knife around, a fish head stuck on its end.

I stare at her for a few seconds, mouth open, and my three-times damned body uses my slipping focus to cause me to flush before I can stop it. Curses, and I was doing so well till now!! Eep, I'm probably glowing right now. Never dealt well with stuff like that though at least I got better at hiding it.

Thankfully, Sora doesn't comment, instead turning back to her plate where she begins cracking open the fish's skull with two knives before seasoning the dark mass inside with lots of salt and spices from the small container in front of her. It seems like she's noticed my stare because she looks up from her work.

"Wanna try? S' really good, trust me!" I just shake my head before remembering something.

"Oh, right, uh, Sora. W-would you like me to cook for you?" The girl blinks.

"What's tha idea 'ere?" What do you mean, 'idea'?

"Just… you know. Cook for you. Eriadne. The others". That makes her nod, if still a bit mistrusting, or at least that's the closest I can get with reading her expression.

"Eh, sure. I'm guessin tha plan's for tommorow?" I nod. Eriadne's favourite dish I know, and while I'm not sure where to get those mushrooms yet, I really want to try at least.

The rest of the meal is spent discussing this and that, and soon we're all full, even Eriadne's expression softened by the meal.

It is then that I finally notice the person sitting on my right.

This concludes the thirty-fourth chapter of A Tale of Witches. I hope you enjoyed this in spite of my shortcomings and look forward to seeing you again.

Please watch the Twitter for the announcement.

Any questions/suggestions I'll address for as long as the thread stays around, or Ask.fm/Spooky Gee for when it won't be.

Have a good day, everyone.

I wouldn't call that mindraping, she's just scaring her with her superpowers. That's totally different and okay right?

>>
>>38266487
She uses her will power to intensify her facial expressions and body language to increase her "Killing intent" if that makes sense?

>>38266487
In a non-technical explanation, it's just animu killing intent, Maria glares super hard and Eva apologizes for being Eva.

the growling. Or the frothing.

It's animu as hell but the actual idea to include it came from Fantasy Craft and the various builds discussed in its general.

Have you thought about picking up one of those really cheap mini-laptops?
You can't do much past word processing and internet browsing but it would work for quest running.
They go for as cheap as 300AUD around here as well.
