With the help of Eunoia, as well as some of the bandages you found, you manage to restore your health to your new maximum. You stand up and dust yourself off, vision returning to normal, with the rest of your party standing by. Liza's also nearby, messaging someone on her UI; you're not sure who it could be, but given the scenario, it's probably one of the Alliance higher-ups.

“Fuck,” She shakes her head. “How am I going to explain this?”

“You could start by helping with the rioting.” Donnel says. “Things weren't looking too good last I checked.”

“I've had my guild regroup.” Liza responds. “Most of the larger Nameless groups have been routed, according to Andor. The market square will take some time to recover, but the guild halls and the city square are mostly clear.”

“Mostly?” Nel asks. “Sounds like there's still some tension.”

“Travel in groups.” Liza says, Crimson Wings unfolding on her back with a series of high-pitched mechanical chirps. “The biggest problem has been ambush attacks. I'm going to make a sweep before I get back to the Guardians' hall.”

“I'd tell you to be careful, but...” Aelriss winces, glancing briefly at the number of dead Nameless scattering the room. “You seem like you're doing a fine job already.”

A fine job? You sigh. You'd like to tell Liza off, but you're in no position to. And on the other hand, she was uninformed. Hell, you might have done the same thing.

“I'm trying.” Liza turns, and there's a faint whine of her Artifact warming up. “I've got to go.”

“Liza.” You ask. “Now's not the best time, but I'd like to talk to you later about joining the Guardians.”

“Mm...” She raises an eyebrow. “If you're really interested, then come by our hall later. After all of the action around Averron gets sorted out. I'll be online for a while, and someone will talk to you if not.”

“Alright,” You respond. “Thanks.”

She steps outside and launches skyward out of view.

“Aw, Ashe.” Nel frowns. “You're really thinking about joining up with them?”

“Just thinking about it.” You respond. “It'd be nice to be in one of the top guilds.”

“Makes sense to me.” Donnel says. “I would, if I thought I'd fit in.”

There's a pause. “Alright, then.” You say, leading the group out of the warehouse. “What do you guys want to do now?”

“I was hoping we'd be able to get to the market square.” Nel says. “I think we've all got stuff we need to do there. After that, I think I'm going to log out. It's been a bit of a day.”

“Mhm.” Donnel responds. “I've got stuff to try and sell, and I want to see if I can get anything crafted before I think about burning off myself.”

“You know anyone that can do that?” Aelriss asks. “I've been looking for a trustworthy crafter. Or a good Technician...”

“Nope,” He says. “NPCs are fine for smaller stuff, though. If you find somebody, let me know.”

Tatsumaki pensively fumbles about in her UI menu briefly before producing an item: the Earthen Orb, and offering it to Aelriss.

“Huh? This is an elemental focus.” She asks. “You want me to use this?”

>>38116506
I'd agree if it wasn't for all the managing we'd have to do. Bear in mind that if we want to compete with the current large guilds we'd have to have a crapload of members and that's... kinda draining to handle in a quest.

I'd rather just see us rise to prominence in one of the current guilds. It'd be basically the same only without the hassle.

“If we're going to the market square, let's stick together.” You respond. “Could still be dangerous.”

“Agreed.” Donnel says. “Alright, how long are we gonna stand here?”

The five of you make your way out of the warehouse and into the street, weapons ready. Some distance away, a group of Nameless gathered under a wrought-iron lamppost watch you, quietly. You keep your eyes on them, hand eased on the hilt of the greatsword at your back.

If it came to a fight, there's no doubt in your mind your group would win. They don't act, and you pass further into the city without event. You'd hate to advocate further violence within the city; hell, you might even make enemies among the Alliance were you the ones who started further fighting.

It's a lot quieter now. Remaining in a tight group, the five of you make your way into the market square. A number of the player-run stalls are damaged, derelict, or destroyed now, though there's a few that are still manned. Altogether, it looks like people are tallying the losses.

You can see the general store where the NPC crafters and salesmen are located. Further down the street, you can see the tavern. The building looks like it's sustained heavy fire damage; the cozy interior appearance apparently comes at the cost of durability. There's a number of people gathered outside, and small groups file in and out.

“I'm heading to the general store.” Donnel says. “Gotta get some crafting done.”

“Same. I need to restock.” Nel responds. “Maybe I can do something with this chain, too.”

“Tatsumaki and I will be out here window-shopping, then.” Aelriss says. “Careful, you guys.”

You head to the general store, looping past the counter and the groups of loitering players to the blacksmith's corner. Your steps make clanking noises as you enter this room; there's a pronounced hollowness to the rusty metal floor beneath you, and a vague scent of smoke.

There's a few players walking from wall to wall, inspecting the various weapons on display. Nearby, you see an NPC. He's larger than most of the ones you've seen, clad in a bright red greatcoat; he's got a flat, feathered face, with an oddly serpentine tail. Currently, he's working some sort of high-tech looking forge, that levitates and shapes heated ingots with the help of small tools and minor hand movements; there's various shelves behind him of leather straps, metal bits, and crystals.

“Aye?” He looks up as you approach. “What can I do for you?”

“Can you reforge a, uhm. 'pegasus gilded mail'?” You ask.

“Ah, an interesting type of armor.” He says. “It augments the inertia of its wearers, but it's no good if you're too heavy to get moving.”

You have the blacksmith create a Pegasus Cuirass, costing 160# after you trade in your current patched leather armor as well as the mining pick. It's golden, like the horse's harness, with light pauldrons that sit right over your shoulders. Parts in the frame around your chest are filled in by a sturdy iron chain-mail. It fits perfectly, and looks excellent.

You feel tougher.

“What about onyx?” You ask. He doesn't seem to know what you mean, until you present the shards in your inventory.

“Those types of weapons are best used for slashing or piercing, and they make good arrowheads if you prefer primitive ranged weapons.” He responds. “Their durability is low overall, and they're too heavy to make proper armor with. You can do the most damage against unarmored targets. Against proper armor, your blows might not cut so deep.”

“What can I do with this fractalline crystal?” You ask.

“They're essential parts of all casters.” He responds. “They come in a lot of rare varieties, and are often hard to find unless you mine them.”

That's why we're getting them, is the thing. As a brawler, we're automatically proficient with any kind of weapon -- we're the same class as Tatsu, in fact. The reason I want them over the shitty dagger is because, if we have to resort to the dagger, that means we've already broken a weapon, or have already been disarmed. Now, it's rather difficult to disarm someone wearing gauntlets, and these gauntlets also do not have the -Durability of the dagger.

If the shop makes a profit from buying and selling then we'd cut the middle man by selling it to her. If the shop doesn't then we get to pick the customer. Suppose they're rare enough that you can't just go to a shop and buy them whenever you want? Thus it would make sense for us to offer her the chance first.
>>
>>38118018
I take your point if we can equip them all the time, but I assume that since they're a weapon we wouldn't be able to or that we'd take penalties to using other weapons along side them (bulky, dexterity debuff etc).

Either way, Tastu has exp put into unarmed combat masteries (I'd assume, anyway) so she's better than us at it.
>>
>>38118094
They don't count when it comes to the effects of abilities contingent on you wielding a weapon; they augment your unarmed damage, but are worn rather than wielded.
>>
>>38118094
You mean just like we haven't invested into any specific combat path at all? By that logic, we may as well not use swords either -- Donnel's probably better than us at it.

As for the penalties, I'd like BSO's input.
>>
>>38118142
Ah, well in light of that I'd say gauntlets were superior to dagger then.

We're not trying to be as effective as Tatsu, though. They're literally just there as a weapon in case we wind up in a tough spot; it's sort of why I made the comparison to Donnel. If we keep comparing ourselves to others, we may as well just have our heads all the way up our own ass.

The blacksmith takes your gauntlets, working them in the forge with the materials you offer to affix small onyx spikes that sit atop your knuckles. You also purchase a steel bastard sword, selling the iron zweihander and a cracked stone helm.

Your purchase comes to 330 credits, leaving you with a total of 154.

Or 3,365, if you wanted to go on a shopping spree with Smith's money.

Back to the general store, then. You don't even bother worrying about your own wallet, or the game economy anymore; it'll fix itself. Invisible hand, or something like that.

The NPC behind the counter is short. She has wide eyes, ears like a mouse's, and is clad in a thick woolen dress. You recall she's different from the last one who worked here.

“Welcome, love!” She says. “Can I help you?”

You enter the purple tent across the road, and are greeted with thick smoke and a familiar heady scent. A familiar NPC sits behind a table with a crystal ball atop it; their features are obscured by the hood of a large robe, with a pair of faintly glowing feline eyes staring at you from the dark.

"Hello, child. Are you lost again?” They ask. “I see, and reveal.”

"This ability, the unknown one." You begin to ask about the unknown ability you have, but aren't sure how to vocalize it. You're having a strange feeling, like you've gone through motions identical to these before. You use your UI to project your skill menu onto the table, and point at it for the fortune teller.

"Mm, yes."

The NPC appears as if they're beginning to speak; then, their animations abruptly reset with a noticeable twitch. This time, they open their mouth, and cough up a terrible hissing that lasts less than a second. Your ears hurt.

Another razor-toothed smile, as the animation replays, and those eyes look at you with purpose and intensity.

"It seems someone is playing games with you.”

"What?" You ask; the response is unfamiliar, but they quickly slip back into their usual phrases.

"Strange, that you would fancy this meeting when our futures are so murky."

"One can see many things in the ether, and learn more from the Celestials. Uncover their artifacts by searching carefully in your travels through dangerous locations, and you will find the truth in a matter of time." They tilt their head. You remember this speech. They're right. There's a burning in the back of your mind. All you need to do is find more Celestial Gems. God, how could you have been so stupid?

"My sight is much vaster than many. Clear your mind, child, and allow me to alleviate your worries. Where shall I direct my gaze?"

“I need to know about Velika and Kjorikos.” You step forward, planting your hands on the table. The thought occurs to you, and you produce the dusty memento, whirling it around to face the NPC. You remember the face of the woman, Velika, beautiful though haunting. “The woman in this portrait.”

“Child, there is no woman in that portrait.”

> [[ Continued ]]
>>
>>38120292

The fortune-teller cackles. You turn it back around. They're right. It's an empty frame with a carefully-painted washed out tomb-wall. Spiderweb cracks in the concrete crawl downward, giving way to a shade of red the color of fresh blood. “I feel a malefic gaze upon you. Have you done something you might regret?”

“What can you tell me about them?” You shout.

“Kjorikos was a brilliant artificer of old, who first harnessed the power of elements with aetheric technology. He gave the world much, but was condemned as heretical for his practices. In time, he fell to dark, for nothing he tried could bring back the one he loved most.” The fortune-teller says. “He buried her, and built his sanctum upon her tomb.”

What will you do?

Jeez, all of that update is just PANIC inducing. The fact we got a slightly different reply for the ??? ability question is worrying enough even before the CG lust and fact we pissed off an artificial (r-right?) ghost.
>>
Guy we need to stop seeing the seer, she's making our lust after gems greater.
>>
>>38120386
Yes, I remember. And I figure if we go back and try to face the boss upstairs he'll focus his attacks on us.

Ergo we should've gotten the heavier armor.

Alternately the boss attacks everyone except us so we can feel his pain.

“How can I appease Kjorikos?” You ask.

“He is too far lost. What he feels for the one he loves has become sick, and twisted.” The fortune-teller says. “But Velika can yet be saved. The weight you feel upon you now is of his jealous rage, and of her anguished spirit. You could enter his sanctum, and find a way to free her. Though, I cannot advise with certainty what course you should follow, but to remain inactive in the days to come having roused him to action could lead to a terrible fate.”

You turn on a heel and leave. You're starting to feel crazy.

You arrive at the guild hall district. It's quiet, and the ground is marred and cracked, evidence that this place was just recently cleaned up after a large battle. The halls look about the same, fortified buildings with steps leading up toward the heavy front doors. Banners proudly display the identity of each guild; the largest buildings belong to the Averron Alliance, and you see one further down the road that looks like the Guard's barracks.

There's mailboxes outside each hall, as well as a plaque with each guild's name.

why I'm personally interested? cause I'd rather join them then the CW, not to say the CW are bad or wrong. that's my opinion

But... Lore isn't something that we deny by picking CG.

As for why elitism is bad I still don't understand.
>>
>>38122031
remind me why people are interested in CG?

Im pushing for WK because they're the most likely to figure out what all this bad gem mojo is all about.

Granted, CG might perhaps be the best at RESISTING it, but I'd rather it actually ends.
>>
>>38122031
Because the lore of this game obviously has a huge impact on significant events in-game. It might even impact player behavior.

And the Crimson Guardians are powergamers and unfriendly to us anyway. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not my preference.
>>
>>38122031
RPers and lore junkies know the most about hte world and can help unravel the mysteries. The Crimson Guardians are just elite players.

>>38122103
But by being with the Keepers, we have a soundboard to go off of and can better gather intelligence and make sense of it.
>>
>>38121876
> Visit the Crimson Guardians.
>>
>>38122103
Liza is such an elitist she won't trust her onwn guild and got the city in shit for not trustin them. that's why. She has her spear shoved so far up her butt, she cuts herself moving her tongue.
>>
>>38121876
> Visit the Writ Keepers.
>>
>>38122031
If you'll remind me why people want to join the CW? other than thinking we can use them to powergame and the fact they're not the WK
>>
>>38122105
But why couldn't we do that regardless of which guild we actually join? I truly don't see why people think joining CG makes us any less capable of engaging the lore than WK. Lore participation is a character choice, not a guild one.

>>38122122
>powergamers
Well, yeah, that's what we are too so far. Trying to be the best.
>unfriendly
Their leader grew wings and caught us. And she's the ONLY member we've met of theirs.

>>38122131
And we can't continue to talk with Ayla... why?
>just elite players
And you think that why?

>>38122137
Nah, she just wanted personal vengeance. Different to not trusting her own guild.
>>
>>38122192
YOU try RPing and talking about lore in a PvP guild. Tell me how that goes for you.
>>
>>38122192
>Their leader grew wings and caught us
after we saved her and there were other players around, can you guarantee if it was just her, us, and the Nameless guy that she wouldn't have left us to die and finished him off? she did scatter her own Guild during a riot just to go after one guy with no witnesses
>>
>>38121876
>> Visit the Writ Keepers.
I would honestly not mind meeting the Crimson Wings afterwards if people are so set on meeting them before making a choice on guild membership
>>
>>38122191
Better access to mechanical knowledge, strong players, combat advice, higher level content, competent players.

>>38122211
They're not Freakshow you muppet, and besides as I've said countless times I don't see why they wouldn't be interested in any lore that was relevant to tangible effects in this world.

>>38122230
Not like people would have resented her if she didn't save us, she could simply say she was too stunned by the turn of events to react in time etc
As for scattering the guild, she'd have done that anyway in order to quell the nameless. What was criticised was trying to take Anax solo on a personal quest for vengeance when she'd have secured him better were she to take other players with her.
>>
>>38121876
> crimson guardians
>>
>>38121876

That's any of the three guilds. Way to sell the Keepers and the Heroes short.
>>
>>38121876
> Visit the Crimson Guardians
>>
>>38122294
She purposefully scattered them into abd positions to hunt him down, her grudge got people killed, due to the Gc not being able to do their jobs.

Elite guild=/= guild of thinking people.

All content is the same and writ keeps have more competent players than Cg, guild don't take bad players.
>>
>>38122294
>mechanical knowledge
WK has more Techs and Artificers
>strong players
all the top level guilds have those
>combat advice
maybe
>higher level content, competent players.
again, that's something all three top guilds would have access too
>>
>>38122339
But they are comparatively short. That's why CG are renowned for being the best guild.

>>38122353
>All content is the same and writ keeps have more competent players than Cg, guild don't take bad players.
Now you're really making stuff up
>>
>>38122367
I think by "mechanical knowledge," he means the actual mechanics of the game (stats, etc.).
>>
>>38122294
>ying to take Anax solo on a personal quest for vengeance when she'd have secured him better were she to take other players with her.
exactly, that's not the kind of Guild Leader I want calling the shots. People died because she made bad decisions and innocent players got caught in the crossfire because she purposely sent her guild to remote areas when people needed help
>>
>>38121876
I'm back. Jesus. I'd have said, like "first to 5" if I knew it'd be this polarizing.

Tallying replies.
>>
>>38122372
CG does not have access to unique in game content. Cg has less players then Writ keepers and all their players on both sides are competent. Guild's don't take bad players, maybe not the best but certainly not bad.

As far as the "best" that is strongly debated, they are the fewest and have the most in depth and asinine screening process, but that doesn't equal the best.
>>
>>38122385
then I say again, all the top guilds would have that knowledge. hell find a strategy guide online if you want that sort of info
>>
>>38122372
It doesn't change that Liza willingly scattered her troops into bad positions (so badly that other guild leaders notices) just so she could have her duel with Anax. She got away with her encounter because she's that capable a fighter, but that's no excuse for the dead innocents.
>>
>>38121876

in a case like this, maybe a Final Destination vote A or B and only A or B would work better next time
>>
>>38122367
>WK has more Techs and Artificers
What >>38122385 said, and besides there's clearly enough for them to upgrade the shit out of Liza's armour
>all the top level guilds have those
Only... CG have more, better ones.
>maybe
That's not a maybe. A guild focussed on what they are would have a lot of excellent advice.
>again, that's something all three top guilds would have access too
Not as much as the CG

>>38122397
It's not her responsibility to look out for everyone all the same.

>>38122417
>unique
Aside from the unique nature of celestial artefacts, I never said they did.

>guilds dont take bad players
DH takes ANYone

>>38122419
The whole board thing implies that's not really viable. As for a guide in general, you forgot that this game has been out for a few days/ week? It's in the discovery phase, there's not exactly walkthroughs for it.

>>38122435
Innocents have a responsibility to protect themselves in a game like this too

as a Guild Leader and one of the founders/protectors of the city she helped make, uh yeah she pretty much is

>It's not her responsibility to look out for everyone all the same.
Thing is she was looking out for NO ONE She fucked over other players and the guild to satisfy her grudge, by making sure her people were so far out of position as to be irrelevant in the fight. She was part of the peace keeping forces. Hell she was one of the leaders. What she did would be analogues to holding the national guard out of the city while terrorists were killing people in the streets.

If you think they are going to give us any artifacts you're delusional, Only she ahs one we won't be getting it.

We've been putting this vote off and off every thread. I feel like for better or for worse we should finally settle it.

One was him, one was after he replied so potentially late. (Also likely a samefag, not that anyone can tell)

I... never said anything of the sort mate.

This isn't even a vote for which guild to join, I don't get why everyone is so blatantly samefagging for their preferred guild
>>
>>38122679
yep
>>38122693
because anytime there's a vote for a guild, people start with the "gotta vote for my guild now so people won't try and join the other guild later" BS
>>
>>38122684
Better to have it now, votes at the start of the thread won't have everyone around.
>>
>>38122684
>>38122679
This was never a vote to join a particular guild. Ascheritte is mostly just meandering about interacting with people as usual. I don't want to cast aspersions on my posters, nor do I want to do the same to other QMs when I say I don't do routelock.

This was never intended to be a clusterfuck, but I know now how to address the issue in the future.

Archiving with apologies to my readers. Next thread will begin with Final-D vote.

I don't plan far in advance because I get burnt out on it. If I run, it will be on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, will start between 6 and 7 CST, and will have a warning on Twitter between thirty seconds to an hour in advance. Saturday threads can happen if my P&P falls through, but don't expect threads any other day.

>>38122829
>>38122858
I'm well aware. "Begin" is sort of a misleading statement. Ideally, the thread will begin with a post that's a bit longer than usual, and I'll wait a little while before asking for replies to that question in particular. I'm sure I'm just asking for the floodgates to be opened come that time, but I'll figure it out when necessary, and might even change things up a bit.
>>
>>38122949
Right, I look forward to it

I wish there was some way to streamline shopping in quests. It sucks when half a thread is just buying stuff
