You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You shove another mouthful of greasy diner food into your face. God, it tastes great. It’s basically everything that was ever bad for anyone’s heart, but you figure you don’t need to worry so much about that stuff anymore (you don’t see yourself living past fifty anyhow. Old bums are the saddest things ever), so in it goes.

Outside, the wind rakes its tongue across the street, rattling the window beside you. In here, though, it’s warm. There’s food and coffee and central heating. And there’s a girl.

Laura sits opposite you, surgically disassembling her food into its fundamental components. Her cutlery flashes deftly in her grasp, moving from piece to piece, separating each segment of the meal and setting it aside with a small pile of its like. You can’t help but be a little mesmerized by the whole process.

Personally, you prefer to get everything you can on your fork as once.

Finishing your meal, you take a moment to just lean back and relax, letting the warmth massage your muscles. You’re still feeling a little stiff after all that practicing. You can’t believe what you managed to pull off, though – if you weren’t set on meeting Silvermane at the Tabbycat, you’d probably want to go for another few hours, just to see what you can pick up.

You watch Laura as she transfers a thin slice of sausage from her plate to her mouth. Your mind drifts.

Heh little do you know JJ... well, unless someone kills you.

No questions from me, we will probably catch up with her later, but we do not know what we are going to end up in so no promises.

JJ is fast burning candle. Even with the ridiculous healing we have, we mutate at least once a week. Sooner or later it will go out of control.

Not really, JJ can stabilize eventually, hence why we should never really get any instability point powers, or only 1 point maximum. I personally would er on not getting any and just maxing out optics.

However, on regards to age his healing 3 is powerful enough to keep him in prime instead of growing old (every tissue is able to regenerate to new and does so due to the self image principle, that's all which is required to stop aging)

>>

yeah. I agree with you about the angry bit. Reminds me more of her Xmen Evo incarnation...which I think was her first one.

In that drawthread, After Deculture/Protoculture turned in for the night, this guy tried his hand at two requests and then vanished.
>>
>>38133371

True.
>>
Well… you guess you better get going.

“Right then…” You pause for a moment, patting any stray crumbs from your jacket. “…I’m heading off to the Tabbycat for a while. I reckon I can get something out of Silvermane if I promise to help him get his granddaughter back.”

Laura nods, swallowing a bite of food back.

“I saw the story. It’s a solid decision.” She pauses, as if stepping momentarily into a memory. “Family can be one of the most optimal forms of leverage.”

That makes you feel a little uncomfortable. You can’t stop thinking about it, even after you kiss her goodbye and make your way out into the cold. Her lips are a momentary respite in a bustle of mixed feelings. You didn’t want to think about the whole thing like that – as leverage. You thought about it as you helping him and him helping you. But it is leverage, isn’t it?

Slowly, it sinks in. You’re about to blackmail a crime lord.

You make your way towards the river, the city narrowing down as you transition out the mottled greys and browns of the Queens, walls growing, alleys lengthening, like shadows under a setting sun. You take your time, but no matter how slowly you pace yourself, you cannot wrench the seconds themselves to a halt, and eventually you find yourself crossing the road toward the Tabbycat, the great, stone felines standing guard at the door seeming to stare down their noses at your every action.

They always sorta give you a Sphinx-ish impression, like they’re about to spring to life and pose a deadly riddle to you. You’re probably a lot harder to catch than Oedipus was, though, so you don’t know why they make you feel so unnerved.

The bouncer, a sheer wall of slate-faced muscle, steps in your way as you approach the entrance.

You sigh.

You look him up and down. He shares with you two traits – firstly, his eyes are hidden behind a pair of dark sunglasses, and secondly, he could almost certainly push a man’s teeth through the back of his throat. But you can probably break him in half, suit and all, and you’d be lying if you said that thought didn’t inspire a certain amount of confidence in you.

Some of that confidence clearly comes through in your voice, because when you tell him that you have a meeting with Ms. Hardy, he barely pauses before standing aside.

Puffing up slightly, you make your way inside, feeling strangely at home in the musky half-light of the club. There’s few people around at this hour – the bar is tended but mostly inactive, the tables are occupied only be a skeleton crew of disparate patrons, and the alcoves at the back are untouched. There’s no music yet either.

You make your way to the bar, intending to ask after Ms. Hardy, when a familiar voice beckons to you from across the room.

“Mr. Green.”

You glance up, and are treated to the sight of Ms. Hardy, her hair let down for once, descending the spiraling stairway leading up to the second floor. Her eyes never stray far from you as she click-click-clicks her way down, staring out from under a fringe of bright, silvery hair.

“Meeting the Cajun again?” Her lips curve upward into a tiny smile. “It’s rather early for that. He seemed to me like a night person.”

>[X] Small talk + Remy.

“No.” You bite back the urge to immediately ask her what she knows about Remy. Because, clearly, she knows something. “That a new hairstyle, by the way?”

Her smile remains where it is, hovering at just above room temperature.

“It’s an old one, actually. I’ve been feeling nostalgic.”

Righty then.

“It’s nice.” With that out of the way, it’s totally time to ask about Remy. “Spot on about Remy, by the way. I guess you know him?”

“I’ve known him at times.” She says, as she steps off the stairs, her heels clicking upon the floor of the club. “He’s done some work for me before, and we’ve worked together. I can’t help but wonder what kind of business you’d have with a man like him.”

Ah. That seems sort of suggestive. You’re not sure that was a question, but it definitely could have been one, and you don’t know if you’re even supposed to be in a position to answer on the behalf of the Agency.

“He worked here?” You say, deflecting the issue. Ms. Hardy shakes her head, her hair swaying through the dark, reminding you of moonlight over sand.

We did help that kid though, also we solved that case in like 10 minutes tops.

“Various freelance jobs.” She clarifies, walking past you, to the bar. She raises a finger, and, as if tuned into some telepathic wavelength you’re not privy to, the girl behind the counter begins making a drink. “He retrieved an item or two on the behalf of my employer. Also starred in one of our most popular home productions.”

“Uh…” You’re a bit lost there.

Her smile lengthens, giving you the distinct impression of internal laughter.

“Pornography, dear.” …What? You cough awkwardly. “There’s a small studio in the other wing of this building. People will pay a great deal for footage of handsome young men and women with” – she lifts her fingers, indicating toward her eyes – “features like his.”

I kinda want JJ to sign up for a film with Laura and then somehow send the DVD of it to Kimura.

It'd make her so fucking angry, it'd be hilarious. But also pretty dangerous for them and Ms. Hardy.

“That’s…” Man, your cheeks must be positively glowing right now. They could turn out the lights and navigate purely via JJ-luminance in here. “…I’m not sure I wanted to know that. Uh, just so you know, not interested.”

Ms. Hardy chuckles quietly as the bartender hands her her drink. It smells of milk and vodka.

“I didn’t think you would be.” She pauses, taking a long sip. “You’d be popular, though. If you bulked up a little.”

No. Just no.

“Yeah, well…” Wait, actually, was that a compliment? Or a solicitation? Is it hot in here? “…Thanks, uh, I guess. But, um, I actually wanted to talk to you about something else…” Wow this is awkward. All that confidence you stepped in with is just draining and draining and draining away… “Basically, I need to talk to Silvermane. You work for him, right?”

She glances up from her drink, and you feel her eyes press through you, like shards of bright blue ice.

“What is this about, Mr. Green?”

You clear your throat, trying to push some of the awkwardness back down, deep into the pit of your belly. You can feel your claws edging at the flesh of your fingertips, begging to be free, to taste the air.

That’s not really how this works. You may be a crusty hobo now, but you were a horrible little criminal once, working for a horrible big criminal, and you remember the importance of keeping your cards close. You might be loath to admit it, but Creeper’s advice, the secret lore of handshakes and bowing out and showing only what you mean to show, has probably saved your life on more than one occasion.

“That’s for Mr. Manfredi’s ears.” You say. She raises an eyebrow. “It concerns someone he’s been searching for.”

She probably has an inkling of what you mean, but her expression doesn’t change. She regards you in silence for a good minute, breathing in the aroma of her drink, and all the while you just squirm silently in your clothes. Eventually, her smile broadens slightly, and she sets her glass down, the tip of her pinkie muffling the sound.

“If this is not worth Mr. Manfredi’s time, there will be consequences. You know that, yes?”

“Yeah.”

“Alright.” She turns toward the bartender, sighing almost imperceptibly. “Lucy, show Mr. Green upstairs, please. I need to make a call.”

She saunters off toward one of the back rooms, leaving you to be lead up the spiral stairs, to the long, wooden table at the center of the second floor. The grand piano sits to one side, the silent, intrinsic power of its shape dominating the room. You recall the feeling of its keys as they flowed through and from you, and you feel a slight, electrical shiver in your spine. It was a true pleasure to act as conduit for a thing of such age and refinement.
>>
>>38135953
Yes, and the paddle and handcuffs.
>>
>>38135930
Shit. Did we even have echolocation when escaping from those gunmen? I don't think we did, and he still made it out. Jesus Christ.
>>
>(2/2)

You sit down, and the bartender asks if you want a drink. You’re so nervous you actually say yes. You sip on a cowboy while you wait, glancing down at your watch at regular intervals.

It’s an hour and a half before you hear anyone ascending the stairs. First up are a pair of nondescript men in suits, their arms as thick as your waist and eyes hidden behind expensive sunglasses. They’re followed soon after by a huge, slate-grey giant of a man – you shudder inwardly when you realize that’s Tombstone – and Mr. Manfredi himself. Ms. Hardy is last up.

The old man regards you with a quiet, intense stare.

“I remember you.” He announces, tapping the floor with the end of his cane, as if jolting his own memory. “Little mutant boy, plays piano. You have something worth my time, boy?”

“The thing to remember about Silvermane, boyo, is that he is a bastard.” The words surface from the recesses of your memory, the tone in Creeper’s voice still fresh and spry – you could almost believe he’s right behind you, speaking directly into your ear. “He’s old blood, Silvermane. A relic. People like to think of relics like, ah, ‘a more elegant weapon for a more civilized age’, but that just isn’t the truth. Relics are things people bashed each other’s heads in with. Swords are relics. Guillotines are relics. The cat’o’nine is a relic. And Silvermane, like all those things, is a relic…”

Tombstone making sure to stay within a few paces of him, the elderly man sits down in front of you, propping his hands up upon his cane, as if drawing a line with it – him on one side, and you on the other.

“I do, Mr. Manfredi.” You make sure to keep your tone even. “I am a mutant. I have lots of mutant friends. We’re a lot more organized that people think we are” – granted, that’s because nobody thinks you’re organized at all – “and many of us have abilities that would greatly assist in finding someone.”

He sniffs quietly, regarding you with half lidded eyes.

“Someone like my granddaughter, I suppose?”

You nod.

“Someone like her.”

He barely moves. His eyes remain focused and sharp, boring into the back of your skull, scrabbling at your intentions, searching for a scrap of something, for anything he can unearth from your posture.

“And I know you’re telling the truth, because…?”

>BANG BOOM BONG

You breathe in, closing your eyes for a moment. A panoply of sounds and smells filter out through your perceptions.

“You ate porridge with jam this morning, and the same the morning before that.” You hear Silvermane shift in his seat. “For lunch, you had a small platter of ciabatta bread, olives, blue cheese, and pastrami. You’re carrying a gun – revolver – and a knife in your boot. Your friend” – you gesture vaguely in Tombstone’s direction – “isn’t carrying a weapon, and neither is Ms. Hardy. She had soup and bread for both breakfast and lunch today, and… silver is her natural hair colour.”

You open your eyes, slipping off your sunglasses.

“Would you like me to continue?”

One eyebrow almost raised, Silvermane lifts a withered hand, as if to signal a stop.

“No, you’ve made your point, I believe.”

“Good.” You feel the nerves subside somewhat. You might have actually been pretty impressive there. “Either way, I’m not asking for anything upfront, and I don’t want money. You have nothing to lose if I don’t hold up my end of this.”

“Oh?” He flashes a huge, brilliantly white grin, the shine of his teeth making you think of old, curved sabres. “I assume you want something out of this, though? Everyone always does...”

this is the easiest, and the only one that they can realistically do granddaughter or not. all the others either cant be done because maggia need to make money to exist or would start a gang war

One or more of your competitors are creating and/or selling Jack. It might interest you to know that Jack needs active X-genes as a base, which means one of the ingredients is processed mutants. I, and several in the Scar, find this...unacceptable. And we think it would be fitting if the Maggia helped us put down those slimy fucks selling the stuff once and for all."

But we can sure as hell ask for info on who is producing it if they know, since that would be us damaging their competition.

>[X] No more Jack.

You nod.

“I want all attempts to make money out of Jack to stop right now. If you’re producing…” You can’t honestly say you’d just leave if it turns out they’re producing. Not without incurring some significant property damage charges, at the very least. “…then that stops. If you’re selling, that stops too. Nobody makes Jack profitable in Maggia territory.”

For the first time since he sat down, Silvermane actually seems a little surprised, leaning back somewhat and dabbing at his coat. He reaches in, going past his gun, and withdraws a cigar case. He says nothing while he lights up, the dark, arid scent propagating through the room.

“Well… that’s interesting. I would’ve thought you’d want that stuff on the streets, considering what it does.” Okay then. He clearly doesn’t know how it’s produced. You can scratch the Maggia off your list of potential producers. “Either way, boy, you’re asking me to give up on a source of revenue that has proven most valuable to others. That seems a little… extreme.”

“We don’t want it here.” You say, as firmly as you can. “That’s how it is.”

“That so?” He breathes in deeply, exhaling a long, bulbous stream of smoke. “Still, a high price, all things considered. You’re here now. What would you do if I said the only way out of here – the only way you leave this place in any shade of alive – is to get me what I want? What if I say that to you?”

Your heart burns in your chest. You can’t believe this. You can’t believe this indolent, blasé imperiousness toward everything. You can’t believe how special this old asshole thinks he is. You’re special. You. You –

Your head hurts. You feel fire moving under your skin, flowing through your veins, tapping at your forehead. Dreaming of lightning, forked and flashing, and bright beyond compare.

You breathe. In, out, in, out…

“You can’t stop me from leaving.” You say, as calmly as you can. You notice Ms. Hardy perk up at this. “If you draw your guns on me, I will be gone, and any chance you have of finding your granddaughter will be gone with me.”

You let yourself flicker in and out of visibility for a second.

“I can be on the other side of NY right now if I want to be.”

That’s a pretty huge lie. Hopefully you have prodigious huge lie salesman skills.

Silvermane stews in the smoke of his cigar for a moment, watching you in silence. You can practically hear the gears turn in his head, feel the cogs slamming against one another, sparks firing at their every collision.

“…Look.” You continue. “Jack is not going to last. There’s a whole army of pissed off mutants out there, and they’re going to get rid of it, eventually. You’re not missing out on anything but a whole lot of really stupid unnecessary bloodshed. You get off the ride here, and when everyone’s finished beating the crap out of each other Creeper’s old territory is good as yours.”

He listens without saying a word, slowly nodding along. Eventually, as if drawing his words out of the smoke, he takes a deep breath, the exhalation shrouding you both in a cloud of greasy, scented warmth.

“That sounds a lot more agreeable.” He says, pacing his words, as if knowingly drawing out your suspense. “You can keep your mutant friends away from the Maggia?”

“I can spread the word, yeah.”

He nods approvingly.

“We have a deal, then.” His grin flashes through the smoke. “You find Alicia, I withdraw from the Jack race, and my family pick up the pieces when all’s said and done.”

You hold out a hand, and are a little surprised when you feel the old, leathery palm of Silvio Manfredi meet yours halfway.

“We have a deal.”

Personally, you'd have to either be pretty stupid or someone JJ wouldn't want to mess with anyway to get close enough to try and grab his horns. That's either asking for a mauling or an optic blast right to the fucking face. And that's assuming the enemy is even fast enough to catch JJ to begin with.
