Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you ate good food, drank good wine, and discovered that a mutant rat has escaped from its containment.

You channel vys, the world shifting green and the walls bleeding away. You scan the shoreline, but don't really see anything rat-like. The ocean is a strange pale-green color, you're surprised to find. It's as if the ocean is somehow slightly alive. You spot a few rats outside of your estate but nothing gigantic or out of the ordinary. Rats are everywhere in the city, after all. They thrive even in the nicest parts of town.

Next you turn your attention towards the tower, scanning the waters. You don't see it anywhere, and it doesn't seem to be in any of the rooms inside the tower. You look around your estate, but again, it doesn't seem to be inside. Then you try looking down. There you see something odd. A giant purple blob about the size of a small child. Initially you can only ponder why the rat is purple. Has it been corrupted by that serum Mortia injected it with? You recall the serum was purple, could it have somehow altered its vys reserves? Even if its vys is purple, why would that show through Nature sight? Could Nature sight perhaps depict mutants differently?

However, you dismiss those concerns to worry about more pressing matters. Namely, where the hell the rat is going. For noy you think it's still inside the slave passages, but it's proceeding quickly towards the catacombs. As you trace what you think its likely path is, a massive collection of green and yellow blobs fades into view. It seems as if the catacombs have been emptied of wildlife, all of the creatures dwelling below surging towards a single point.

Then you see it, the idol. It cuts through the green haze of your Nature sight, revealing itself in clear detail. Runes cross its surface, the halo of blue light revolving around its head swirling wildly around its origin. Runes stretch down the front of its torso, glowing with a bright golden light. The stone that the idol is made of has vanished, replaced entirely by that alien night sky. The mutant rat you created, and indeed the hundreds of bright points of light surging from the depths, all seem to be convening on the statue.

You reach out via the brooches to Mortia and Fulvia. {I've found it, it's managed to get into the slave passages and it's heading for the catacombs. Do you know how to get there?}

Mortia is the one to respond. {Yeah, we do. We had to figure out the way when Skull Kid showed us his magical grenade. Should we meet you there?}

You're already slipping quietly out the ballroom door, making your way swiftly through your estate towards the Master Bedroom. {Yes, and bring weapons. I believe it's making away towards a strange idol I found inside the catacombs. As are a hundred other vermin which seemed to have been dwelling down there. I'm going to fetch Zahak, since I think this will be a good lesson for him.}

With that you sever the connection, pushing open your bedroom door to find Zahak sitting proudly in front of a likeness of your own face. It seems he used the smooth, featureless bust left by Chrys after her last meditation for his own meditation on Earth magic. He couldn't quite manage to get some of the details exactly right. For instance, you have sharp teeth like Zahak's own and he depicted your ears as weird, twisted horns, but for the most part he did quite well.

As you enter the room, Zahak's voice enters your thoughts. He's quite clearly excited. {Papa I did it! I did it! I made a you! Except it's a you made out of stone and it doesn't talk to me, but it's you!}

While adorable, you have more pressing concerns. {That's very good, Zahak! I'll have to put that on the mantle so everyone can see it. How would you like to go hunting with Papa as a reward for your dedication?}

So now that we know that gates are basically portals to different parts of the void/realities.
Does that mean our 1 insight is learning how to make those or being able to traverse through them(if we get two more insights inside a gate)?
>>
Told y'all that making pyandissian rats was a bad idea. Now we have the rat plague to deal with, and sokolov isn't here with his magic red potion to help us out
>>
Zahak stands up on his hind legs and stretches his wings wide, beating them irregularly to keep himself balanced. You think if he was older he would probably roar, but all he can manage at the moment is a high pitched squeaking noise. You take that as a yes, and quickly grab your cloak before dashing off with your adoptive son in tow.

You slip into the Servant's quarters, pulling on your cloak as you do so. However, a thought gives you pause. Should you put on your armor for this? They're just vermin, but that mutant rat was awfully large...

can we explain our leaving as preparing for the entertainment? no reason to get people worried/curious

I think that it's highly likely that the creation of a phylactery is merely permanency on a massive scale, whereupon the caster puts so much of their soul into the object, their body or bodies are left a husk. Of course, it'd take a really well designed and built artifact to hold that much soul.

You reach into your cloak and extract your Rhynian Armor. One thing you will say for the Rhynians, they designed their armors to be convenient. Putting on the Rhynian armor is as simple as stepping into the opening at the back of the armor and pulling it up to your chest. It does the rest for you, sealing itself around your torso. The helmet fits easily and securely atop your head with only the fastening of a few straps.

Wearing your Rhynian armor is almost nostalgic. Lately you've tended to prefer either your Warlock armor or no armor at all, but it's certainly nice to be able to put on a suit of armor without a needle stabbing into the base of your neck. Once you're suited, you draw your spear and your new shield from your cloak as well before draping your cloak over your shoulders and affixing it with your brooch.

As you proceed through the slave passages you begin to hear a chorus of chirping and chittering. It's quiet at first, but as you grow nearer the catacombs it rises in intensity. You pick up your pace and it isn't long before you come upon Fulvia and Mortia standing by a great arched entryway.

Fulvia wears her layered armor and wields the gladius you bought her so long ago in Anthus. By contrast, Mortia appears as you first saw her in the Void. A bright red mask conceals her face, its visage resembling some sort of mutant rabbit or horned creature. She wields a sword with a pale green blade and a skull carved into the hilt, and around her neck sits a faintly glowing necklace. She bleeds a tremendous amount of magical power into her surroundings, it's almost overpowering really. You'd forgotten she had such impressive artifacts.

Mortia speaks, her voice normal distorted and warbling. “Great, you're here. Why are you bringing Zahak exactly? I mean, isn't there a risk he'll get hurt?”

Zahak's voice enters your thoughts, his tone irritated. {I'm not gonna get hurt, I'll show her! I'm way better hunter than she is, probably!}

You wave a hand dismissively. “He'll be fine, he's quite the competent little Vatis in his own right and besides, it's a reward for his recent success in meditation. Now then, shall we proceed?”

You're met with nodding heads and words of affirmation. Thus, the four of you voyage into the catacombs. You activate your magic sight by channeling Water magic into your armor. Immediately the world is transformed into a roiling mass of blues, greens, purples, and reds.

You see a few burning points of yellow approaching rapidly from below, but they're still quite some way off. You can't see anything in the tunnel where you remember the idol being, it's just a giant black spot devoid of vys. You don't see anything that immediately screams mutant rat to you, nor is there a horde of vermin bearing down on you.

You cut the flow of vys to your armor and set of through the catacombs at a brisk pace. “Follow me to the tunnel where the idol is, it's a natural chokepoint and should allow us to easily wipe out whatever these creatures are. Plus, it will give me a chance to examine the idol. Maybe I can figure out why it's attracting all these pest.”

Your companions follow, Zahak trailing along behind with his head raised up in the air. Every now and then his tongue will flick out to taste the air, like a snake searching for a scent. At one point he stops, taking a deep breathe and exhaling a massive jet of flame. The fire washes over the stone, catching a group of small, vaguely reptilian, long-necked creatures by surprise.

They're set alight, their screeching filling the cavern as they writhe on the floor. Their mouths are a haphazard collection of teeth, two long tusk stretching down from their upper jaw. Horns protrude seemingly at random from their six-eyed heads. Disgusting little buggers, truly.

When no further creatures present themselves, your party proceeds onward. The further you advance into the catacombs, the louder the sounds of claws scraping against stone and chattering teeth become. Eventually you find the pitch black tunnel which conceals the idol and step past the illusory screen of darkness. On the other side you find the tunnel brightly illuminated by the glowing runes which cross the idol's surface.

We can do that while exterminating rats, that's what brooches are for.

You're relieved to find that you got here before the horde of vermin. You don't see the rat you and Mortia created anywhere either. Odd, considering it had a significant head start on you. Surely it would've reached here first. You try activating your magic sight to get an idea of where it might be, but find yourself blinded. The presence of the idol seems to obscure ambient vys, as the world appears black through the lens of your armor.

>>
>>38175507
Hell no, he ain't eating anything that so much as touched that rat.
We are going to try and capture it alive anyway, i was thinking just catch it in a sphere of water, should be easy enough, maybe freeze it around its limbs, and leave a bubble of air for it to breathe.
Or, now that I think about it, the easier is just a Paralyze spell.
Infact, the easiest way to deal with this situation once they arrive is AoE+Paralyze, we can then kill what we want once they're paralyzed. How did I not think of this before?
>>
>>38175589
It does sound fairly simple.
>>
>>38175535
We have some lantern oil, we could smear some on the floor to spread some fire.
We can put some food on the floor and cover it with poison glands.
We have some ropes and barrels we can do something with.
>>
>>38175535
Just prepare a Hidden+AoE+Paralyze spell or two, no need to get fancy/lethal right now, this is the most efficient way to take care of the problem.
>>
>>38175631
Seconding.
>>
>>38175631
Hidden is pointless there.
>>
>>38175631

>>
>>38175631
no need for hidden really.
>>
>>38175645
>>38175663
>>38175665
I thought that was the only way to really "prepare" a spell so it can be activated at the drop of a hat.
>>
>>38175626
Using magic we can also create some spike pits with earth magic+metal to reinforce the spikes.
Maybe freeze parts of the floor so the rats find it harder to maneuver or slip into spike pits.
Loosen some rocks in the ceiling to drop them on rats when they come, obviously reinforce the surrounding area of the ceiling so it doesn't collapse.
Boil some barrels of water and get ready to spill them on some vermin.
>>
Y'all are really preparing to focus down some rats.

They're just rats! And one big rat! It's not all that threatening.
>>
If not for the child of the gods being around at the moment i'd say make some enchanted proximity mines, like
Create[Fire(large)] IF (stone in circle)
and we just drop a small rock on it with manipulate to roast a few
>>
>>38175631
Why paralyze though? That's just going to require spending more time killing them afterwards. Just use fire, it has the additional benefit of spreading.
>>
>>38175755
That is way to excessive for some fucking rats.
>>
>>38175753

>>
>>38176022
Paralyzing all of them will make killing them with fire/freezing/ice blades/ice spears/fucking Earth magic/whatever even easier, we won't have to worry about movement and shit.
>>
>>38176080
And you're totally sure that Paralyze+AOE isn't going to have a massive cost if the amount of vermin surpasses dozens?
>>
>>38176105
That's what AoE does, it reduces costs. And they're rats, I'm sure we could paralyze a dozen for a single vys the normal way, Aoe makes it even more efficient. Remember, AoE isn't pumping the rats full of a paralysis spell individually, it's throwing a lump of paralysis vys into the crowd and letting it do its thing. Hell, could throw in poison if people want.
>>
>>38176105
Soma said AoE works so that if there's a group of 5 people with broken arms, the cost of healing all of them is just the cost of the effects+the cost of healing the arm of a single peraon.

>>38176979
We have.
When we were first raiding the bandit hideout that found Darzi in.
>>
>>38176938

It already has Permanency, since it's permanently enchanted. Permanency only lets enhcanted objects generate/gather enough vys to cover the upkeep of their enchantments, I thjnk.
Although I wonder, would using Permanency on an unenchanted object make it gather excess vys? are vys batteries that simple?
>>
Guys.
Why aren't we learning lasers, we've got the understanding of fire magic to do it.
>>
>>38176979
>>38176996
I'm oretty sure it was said that Leech is thought not to be able to actually kill people normally, just knock them out.

It only kills people if they're near death.
>>
>>38177001

>>
Rolled 7, 5, 1 = 13 (3d10)

>>38177032
Leech can kill if you don't cut off the spell, or are careless with it. Most Vatis would be paying attention to how much they are pulling, but remember to "kill someone" via draining their Vys you need to get them into the negatives.
>>
>>38177032

>>
>>38177013
It's called fire+beam, but yea would be cool to have disco lasers as a distraction
>>
>>38177076
No man, the thing is entirely different.
One thing is fire in a beam, other is a laser.
Ritual book of surya has a thing on lasers in it.
>>
>>38177013
Same reason we aren't learning Magnification, Partial Invisibility, and Lightning.
Which reminds me, do you think it would be possible to use Metal on our arms to turn them into metal, then store a gathered Lightning charge in each one? Marsala Ve was said to work well with Fire, we could use it in hand-to-hand, since going colossus also makes us faster.
It'd be even cooler if we were fast enough to build up a lightning charge mid-combat though, like just prepare to strike and build it up before it connects with the enemy.
>>
>>38177072
Sounds almost as easy to kill as Paralyzed rats.
>>
>>38177137
But it takes less vys.
>>
>>38177182
Probably an insignificantly small amount less, to be honest. It's not like we're short on vys, as I've said, our Shockwave sword has like 50 vys in it.
>>
>>38177259
Don't forget fulvia.
>>
>>38177259
If it takes even a fraction less but achieves the same result then there is no reason not to use it.
>>
>>38177290
Depends, I think Paralyzed rats which are entirely still and will remain so are easier to kill/handle than just uncoscious ones that mighg wake up.
Deoends though, hopefully Mik knows how shit works and Soma will tell us which is better.

Hidden would indeed be necessary if you wanted to prepare the spell in advance, otherwise you'd be forced to cast it immediately. Hidden does have a time limit though, after which point the vys loses coherency. I sort of envision it like a thermobaric explosion.

Your vys pool will be 44/49 after this.

Reverse Cloak Polarity: Then, you try channeling a little vys into it. It flickers for a moment, for just an instant the inside layer and outside layer of the cloak switching places, and some of the sheets get sucked into the cloak, but you start to feel really dizzy, like you might pass out at any moment, and you're forced to cut off the channeling before anything really happens. It seems like it does something, you just aren't powerful enough at the moment to see what it is.

So, just got here, but i honestly want to do a proper scan of the city for that black soul, and preferably check to make sure Rasim is indeed the green soul. You try casting an area of effect spell for the first time since you learned the meta. Instead of merely letting vys bleed from you as you typically would, you release a single, massive burst of vys. It floods the area in front of you with magic, and as you connect your reserves to the now untethered vys you feel something odd. There is a force of some sort drawing your vys towards the statue, making positioning it properly a challenge.
>Vys Pool: (44/49)

Eventually you manage to get your vys into position but you're forced to keep half your attention devoted to holding it in place as you make your way over to the idol, calling over your shoulder to your companions. “Tell me if you see them coming, I'm going to take a look at this statue.”

You don't get a response, and you weren't truly expecting one. The atmosphere is tense as you await whatever it is the vermin are scheming. The fact you can't see past the tunnel's entrance isn't doing anything to help everyone's nevers. The chittering and scraping grows ever louder, ever closer. At times it seems to be just beyond the dark plane that conceals this hall from the rest of the catacombs. Even if they are just pest, it's a little nerve racking.

You come to stand a few feet away from the statue. The heat in the air around the statue is gone, the temperature well below freezing. You're not particularly bothered, in fact you find it sort of pleasant. Reaching out, you tentatively tough a finger to the 'surface' of the idol. You find your hand passes through as if the statue weren't there, the inside of the statue blisteringly cold even by your unusual standards.
(Man, I need more caffeine.)
>>
>>38179893
Father/son bonding are among the best parts of this quest
>>
>>38179893
dude, we were never planning on doing that, that is a retarded idea
>>
You quickly jerk your hand away, and try instead casting a simple spell. You shoot a thin jet of flame at the statue, but as soon as the flame passes into the statue itself it's snuffed out, the spell useless. You make a slow circuit around the statue, to see if you might discern anything further from looking at the statue from a different angle. You note that each step seems to bring into view a new, completely alien set of constellations. No two scenes ever seem to be the same. Other than that, you don't notice anything too odd. At least, nothing odder than the statue itself.

As you're about to complete your circuit of the statue you hear a screech, and glance upwards to find a rat the size of a child falling towards you. It seems to have climbed up above and lain in wait deep in the shadows of the ceiling until it saw its chance to strike.

>It's a ratbush!

You rapidly condense water from the air in your surroundings and freeze it into a solid spike, hurling it at the massive rat. The spikes slams into the rat's side, completely reversing its momentum And slamming it into the near-by wall. Some of its blood almost splattered on your robes, but you managed to catch it whilst still in the air. It simply wouldn't do to return to the party with bloodstained robes.
>Vys Pool: (43/49)

To keep the giant rat in place you manipulate the ice such that it encases the rat from the neck down, adhering it to the wall. At your level of expertise it's a simple task. With the mutant taken care of you turn your attention to the entry tunnel once more, noting with some mild concern that the first few vermin have begun to creep past the veil of black that conceals the entrance.

For the most part they're familiar creatures; rats, stray cats, a few massive cockroaches the size of your hand. Nothing particularly worrying or very rare. However, as more and more of the horde advances into the tunnel you start to notice strange creatures among them. Small, humanoid creatures with skulls for heads and great racks of antlers. Strange curstaceans which remind you of some sort of perverse hybrid of crab and spider. Swollen, mutated creatures which may have once been chickens.

Zahak opens his mouth wide and spews forth... some sort of liquid. To be honest you're not really sure what's going on until it lands on one of the rats and ignites. The floor rapidly becomes coated in a thick layer of some sort of tar-like substance Zahak spews from his mouth. Whatever it is, it burns quite well. Fulvia erects a high wall in front of the party to prevent any of the creatures from reaching you, which serves to corral them for you.

GM nature have telepathy between themselves.
So i figured an easy way to figure out the runes for it, is to learn it the old fashion way.

You wait until the tunnel is awash with animal life before activating your spell, putting an end to the conflict in an instant. A few dozen creatures seem to have been outside of the area of effect of you spell and are climbing desperately over the frozen bodies of their comrades in an attempt to reach the statue, but they're not really a threat.

Let our friends do as their wish. They might even just take them for experimenting on, and Zahak can practice his fire-breathing skills or whatever. Just make sure he understands to not eat any of their hideous mutated flesh though.

Also, leech some dry to replinish our vys before leaving.
>>
>>38180849
Ao, Zahak knows how to do Liquid Fire, it seems.
Either that, or simply lava.
Which reminds me that we still need tofigure out both of those.

These creatures...mutants...were drawn here the same way that Mik was drawn to the child. They come to worship at the idol and to throw themselves into it to be consumed by it. Its just that they are somehow driven to that state by the statue/idol alone and Mik actually had it happen when he was in the direct presence of the child.
>>
>>38181056
It's magic, but in a similar fashion to you being able to heal minor wounds without spending vys, Zahak doesn't need to spend vys to create small to medium sized flames.
>>
>>38181084
>tfw Child gets pissed that we killed its worshippers
>>
>>38181175
I'm thinking its more like a passive effect that gets passed through the statue/idol to this world. The child probably doesn't even know its happening as it is probably just too small to notice.

The scent of burning flesh and hair is slowly filling the air as more and more vermin catch fire in the close confines created by their press of bodies. You clap your hands together, getting everyone's attention. “Welp, seems we've taken care of this mess. I'll leave cleaning up to you all, I have a party to get back to.”

With that you hike up your robes and get ready to wade through a burning sea of filth, but Mortia stops you on your way past. “Hold on a second, why should we have to clean everything up? You're just as much responsible for this mess as I am and Fulvia isn't even involved at all! We should all work together to-”

She's interrupted as vys floods the room, originating from the generator on Fuvlia's back. The ground opens up, swallowing the mass of vermin whole and crushing them as it closes once more. When finally she cuts off the flow of vys, the floor of the tunnel looks exactly as it was when you arrived.

You find the fact she's able to perform such a monumental feat of Earth magic with more or less casual ease mildly concerning. After all, if she can do that to a hundred or so rats and roaches, who's to say she can't do it to you, or your entire estate? Regardless, this more or less works out well for everyone. With the problem evidently solved, you free the giant rat from the wall and, using manipulate, carry it in front of you in mid air, still encased in ice.

At the tunnel entrance Fulvia stops, and turns once more to face the wall of black. You feel her gathering vys for a spell, and in one burst of energy she seals the tunnel behind a thick stone wall. A far more permanent solution than merely hiding the idol away behind shadows. To mark the tunnels location, she carves a giant 'X' onto the wall, in case you ever wish to one day return and view the idol. You were going to have someone stand guard, but this is a far better solution.

To make conversation on your way through the catacombs towards the entrance to the slave passages, you turn to Mortia. “So, what do you artifacts do exactly? I didn't really get a demonstration while we were in the tunnel.”

Mortia reaches up to run her a finger along the rim of her mask. “They're just a few family heirlooms I inherited from my mother. Nothing special, really. Sometimes I think they're more for show than anything else.”

You sigh. “Come on, Mortia. No reason to keep their uses a secret from me. I'm not going to try and take them from you. So what do they do?”

She seems hesitant to tell you, so you drop it. However, as you're passing through the narrow corridors that make up the slave passages of your estate, she finally deigns to reveal to you at least some of her artifacts numerous effects. “Well, I probably shouldn't really tell you this, but I've never actually had to use the sword. My mother told me that it wracks the body of whomsoever it strikes with immense, unnatural pain and spreads a poison through their veins. She also said that, when used against a spirit, it could make them more vulnerable to magic. As I said, I've never actually used it.”

Interesting, you'd thought her blade was powerful but you didn't think it would have any sort of effect on spirits. “What about the necklace? It seems fairly powerful as well.”

She absentmindedly plays with the golden chain that hangs around her neck. “The necklace was my mother's, she took the name Mors Aurea when she joined our ancestors in the beyond. She never told me what it did, just that it would protect me should the need arise.”

You get the feeling she's not telling you the whole truth.

Soma confirmed that the armour only negative was over saturation of vys if our pool is too small, this was around 20-25 vys ago(soma also said we were close to wearing it normally, why do you think people were rushing to get to 50 vys?).
Our pool is much larger now.
>>
>>38182225
but why do we want to put it on? the only thing we gain is a piddly quantity of vys, and mik has to have his neck stabbed by a fucking needle. think as the character, why would a game demonstration warrant that level of seriousness?
