You stand at the crest of a hill. The season's first snow idly drifts to the ground around you.

Before you sits the village you have fought to defend and serve, a walled fortress surrounded by empty fields.

You see the snow settle on the roofs of the buildings you have grown up with, each containing a family.

The wind in the forest behind you is silent as if in mourning.

The snow falls, oblivious to the tradegy it is beginning to cover.

Your home is smoldering, black smoke rising higher than the mountains in the distance.

A panic jolts your frozen mind back to life.
The Queen, your Queen, the woman you swore to protect, your Priestess, your friend-

Rozalina.

Is she in there? Is she trapped under a burning pilar, skewered by spears, buried under the unending layers of snow?

The people you both swore to protect, the walls you swore to defend at all cost.. Has she fallen with them?

Your knees weaken and shake. You have failed to protect your Queen and your tribe. Everything is burning, everyone is dead and the World works only to bury their memory.

You should have been here, your mind screams. You should have died protecting Rozalina, you might have taken her to safety, you could have died to let her go free!

Grief resounds through your body, compressing your chest, hammering through your skull.

Why don't you curl up and die? Join your people in death and be buried in the snow along with them. The world has forsaken you.

You close your eyes. You let go of your balance, slowly tipping forward towards the peaceful embrace with Natu-

"Oskaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar!"

A sorrowful roar explodes from beside you. Your eyes shoot open as you stumble to regain your balance. A hand grabs your shoulder, steadying you, compelling you to look towards the voice.

Before you stands a tearstained face, his eyes pleading as they stare into yours.

"Hurry," the man you recognize as Oskar whispers, grief clutching at every word. "My brother, scream your name out to the heavens. Do not let the wind steal it and your life. Let the world hear your intentions for righting this disaster."

You can't. You look away from Oskar as tears well up in your eyes. "I.. I've failed them."

You pull away from Oskar's grasp and collapse into the snow. You advert your eyes, yet you can feel the seething anger of Oskar's glare.

"So you're going to give up, just like that? You are going to fold now? We've been to hell and back, we've lost brothers in arms before. By the Gods, are you going to give up on Rozalina this quickly?"

Oskar spits at the ground beside your feel. The snow begins to cover your head and shoulders.

"Until we find her body, until we see for ourselves that our Priestess is truly dead, how can we allow ourselves to soil her memory by not even trying?"

You feel a wet nose nudge your arm as a wolf's head enters your vision. Its pure white coat is damp with the falling snow. The wolf looks at you, and as you make eye contact you see his concern. The wolf nudges you again.

Oskar's glare still bores into your head. "So what will it be? Will you stand up like a man and help me look for survivors? Or will you sit here and disgrace yourself in Queen Rozalina's eyes?"

There's a beat of silence after Oskar's question.

The grief that threatened to cripple you is overcome by an anger colder than a frozen river. Your mind calms.

The corner of your mouth twitches upwards, followed by a smile. A dark chuckle escapes your lips as you raise your head to lock eyes with Oskar. He blinks, surprised at the cold determination in your eyes.

"I never intended to give up, brother. I will not stop until I personally kill the bastard that did this."

Oskar smiles. "I knew you wouldn't give up so easily. Come, let's try and find survivors and some clues at to who did this."

You stand, that dark smile having not quite left your lips, and you make your way towards the city. Rozalina's white wolf, Berengar, trots alongside you as Oskar leads the way.

As you approach the wall you see that the front gates are opened, but neither them nor the walls are damaged. Inside you see the collapsed buildings and smoldering remains of the smithy and other professional occupations. Smoke is rising from both the north and the east which contains the Queen's living quarters and the general residential district, respectively. The western district, which contains the noble district, the granery, and the armory, does not have smoke billowing from it. Here is where your family home resides.

Oskar begins to seeth again, furious. "These gates can only be opened from inside." He stomps off towards the guardhouse.

Berengar bounds down the street, towards Queen's house.

You follow the wolf.

You walk through the barely blazing remains of your home city. The streets are barren of anything but soot and barely burning buildings. The snow is mixing with the fallen ashes, making everything a dull gray. You remember running these streets as a child with Roza, playing tag around the marketplace while the Roman merchants try and sell their wares. You remember when the first Roman diplomats arrived and how the whole town put on a celebration feast for their arrival. You remember the crisp scent of the newly chopped wood during the redevelopment funded by the trade agreement with Rome. You remember sneaking out into the night with Roza, leaving the city walls to lay by the nearby lake and watch the stars.

You grin. You will enjoy setting fire to those responsible for this destruction.

You come to the Queen's residence and see that a catapult's rock has smashed half of the building. The bedroom has miraculously been untouched, but part of the wreckage is blocking the door.

Berengar is sniffing the area around the door.

You do not see a body, but you find it extremely unlikely that Roza would have hidden herself in her room.

Unless she was assassinated in her sleep.

This quest is basically about finding out what happened to your home village, and your Queen.

The world is still opening up, mostly because we're still in the Prologue of sorts.

Basically you're a germanic noble whose tribe has been attacked, and it seems that we're now on a quest to kill those who did such an evil deed.

There's much more to it than that, of course, but that would be spoilers.

You kick away the loose pieces of timber from in front of the door, only to find a large beam. You work to lift it up, causing the rest of the debris to become dislodged. The sound of tumbling lumber and cracking beams echos through the town.

You successfully remove the beam from in front of the door, but as you go to open it, it swings out and slams into your face.

You stumble backwards, dazed, only to be tackled by a woman.

You both lay there for a moment in surprise before looking at each other.

Your eyes widen in recognition. It's Ema, one of Roza's handmaidens.

Her tearstained eyes widen in panic. Ema sits up and begins to throw wild punches at your face.

She rains punches down at you, but the impact with the ground shook you out of your daze. You expertly deflect all of her swings.

"Hey Ema, it's me, Cenric. Could you please stop trying to beat my face in?"

She reels back for another punch before she stalls, her panic turning into confusion. Ema looks at you for a second.

You look back at her.

She blinks.

You smile.

Her face lights up in joy before hugging you.

"Thank the Gods, someone's alive! They came and Lady Rozalina went out to meet them and she told me to stay in her room and there was a huge crash and screaming and smoke and- and.."

She falls silent as she sobs into your shoulder.

You see a glint of metal to your right in the rubble.

She springs up and looks at you.

"Is there anyone else alive?"

"I don't know Ema. Oskar and I were returning from our diplomatic mission to meet with our Roman allies when we found the city on fire. I haven't seen any bodies, and the Queen is missing."

She looks at you. "Wait, you haven't found any bodies?"

You blink. "No?"

"And that doesn't strike you as weird?"

".. Well, when you put it that way."

Ema climbs off of you while brushing herself off. "You haven't found anybody else, have you?"

"No, not a soul." You sit up. Berengar is digging in the rubble beside you. He then seems to latch onto something and drag it out. The wolf looks at you expectantly, wagging his tail.

At his feet rests a shield with a Hawk head painted on. Ema gasps. "That's Lady Rozalina's shield. She wouldn't have gone into battle without it.." She trails off before shaking her head. "I.. I need to go outside."

She walks out.

You can't remove your eyes from Roza's shield. This means.. She didn't go into battle, meaning there wasn't a siege of the city. That explains the lack of damage on the walls, but not why everything has been torched or why the gates were open. What in the Gods happened here?

> [Cont.]
>>
>>38183722
Your musings are interrupted by a scream from
outside. Berengar immediately bolts out of the room, and you jump up as well.

> Take shield y/n?

You sprint outside to see Ema viciously kicking a soldier who is trapped under one of the collapsed buildings down the road where you hadn't yet looked. "You bastard! Why the fuck are you here? What in Hades did you do to Eburwin?"

You recognize the uniform as that of the Chausci tribe.

Each of Ema's kicks resound with a sickening thwack. The soldier isn't defending himself.

"This is all your fault! I'll kill you for destroying my home! I'll kill you all!" Ema's screams were transforming into an incoherent roar of rage.

You feel the ice cold anger fill your veins.

I assume we want the generic "Who are you, who sent you, why are you here" stuff, right? Is there anything more specific you would like to add?

You squeeze the shield in your hand. Information first, then revenge.

"Ema, stop."

She wheels her head around and glares at you. "What? He's the cause of this!"

"I know." You approach her and rest your hand on her shoulder. "That's why I have to ask him a few questions first."

"Well I don't care about your questions!" She gives one last kick to his face before she turns around and walks off in anger. You see teeth and blood shoot out.

You wince when you look at him. It seems he was in a bad way before Ema came. He is wearing the armor associated with the Chausci tribe with a green sash over his right shoulder. He's a noble, you note.

The soldier looks at you with unfocused eyes before resting on your chest where he becomes visibly relieved. "Thank the Gods.." He said in Latin, surprisingly coherent.

You glance down and note your red sash, marking you as a diplomat of the Roman Empire and thus a Roman citizen. Roza pulled some strings to get you and her certified as citizens so you could efficiently and safely move through Roman lands..

The soldier was still talking. "I'm glad you came, sir. We did our duty and razed this city." He sputters and coughs. You notice that the lower half of his body is smashed under a large pile of debris.

You look into his eyes, your veins growing colder by the moment. "Who is your commanding officer."

> [Cont.]
>>
"Hermann.." He mutters. "I hope the rest of the boys are okay.." He is trailing off.

Hermann.. You recognize the name, he's one of the generals from the Chausci tribe. On top of that, he is an auxillary of the Roman Legion..

Why is a Roman general involved with the attack on one of Rome's allies? Were you.. Betrayed?

The soldier's speech quickly becomes delirious and uncomprehendable. He's fading fast. Your blood is frozen.

>>
Your anger fades, replaced with a somber compassion.

You take a small vial from your pocket and hover it over the soldier's lips.

"Here," you say in German, "Drink this. It will help you sleep."

The soldier smiles and opens his mouth. You pour the vial into his mouth. He swallows and looks into your eyes in a moment of clarity. His face grows serious.

"Be careful, sir. There is a storm coming soon, and it all has to do with the Priestess Queen who escaped before we got here."

You blink and look away. "Is.. Is Rozalina alive?" You turn back to ask the soldier, "What does this all have to do with her?"

The soldier looks to be in a peaceful sleep. He is already dead.

You stand up as Ema walks to your side.

".. Is it true?" She looks to you with hopeful eyes.

"I hope so."

----------------------------------

You approach the armory and grainery. In front of the armory, you see seven soldiers all sporting green sashes. Their arms are at the ready and they seem to be focusing on the door.

You and Ema slip out of sight while Berenger silently flanks.

"Come out, you filthy traitor!" One of the younger soldiers calls out. "We already burned your city down, do you think we won't roast you like a pig? After we find your whore of a queen, Germania will be free from those filthy fucking Romans."

An older soldier elbows the yeller, silencing him.

There's a tense pause.

The door to the armory slowly opens, and out steps Oskar with a great axe at the ready.

You can feel his fury from where you are at, and the younger Chausci soldiers take a step back in surprise.

"You call me a traitor?" Oskar voice is entirely calm.

The soldiers are silent.

"Are you implying that I am not loyal to Germania?"

More silence.

"Then who are you to come here and enslave your fellow Germans!" Oskar's roar causes one of the soldiers to visibly stagger and shake. "For this crime against our people, I will personally slaughter every last one of you!"

Osker charges.

What does MC look like?
>>
>>38185572
He is about 5'7 due to the height differences between today and now, medium length blonde hair that is kosher with both Roman fashion and his Germanic heritage. He has vibrant blue-green eyes, like what you would see in the reflection of a tree during midsummer.

Cenric carries himself like a noble, and the players have made him to be cold and calculating rather than controlled by emotion like Oskar. He isn't the biggest of guys like in the OP picture, but he definitely has experience on the battlefield. At the same time he often plays as a diplomat, meaning he isn't in peak physical condition like Oskar might be.

He's more lithe than big and bulky is what I mean.

More details will develop as the quest continues. You guys are developing Cenric as much as I am!

And yes, Cenric is his name because I asked my friend/over the shoulder editor for a name when you all decided not to.
>>
>>38185770
Well, I couldn't really think up of a good name so I just left it blank..
>>
>>38185861
That's fine. In fact, I'm happy you guys went the route you did at the beginning.

I was expecting that you all would be rushing in, ready to chop some heads.

The name could be changed in the future, if people want something different.
