You Alice Zief, an amnesiac armagus user rescued by a Kaka kitten. After meeting Jubei, a person somehow cattier than even the Kaka clan, you trained his apprentice in close combat. This mostly boiled down to beating the living daylights out of the boy, but he didn't really hold a grudge at least.

And, as it turns out, he also cooks a mean stew.

After eating dinner, you retired to the baths.

Roughly as soon as you were settled in, Ragna was nice enough to deliver your towel. You were already quite naked when he walked in, but mostly concealed beneath the water.

This is still more than enough to turn the boy's face redder than his coat as his brain overheated from the stimulation.

You realize that a normal person should feel embarassed, or perhaps indignant. The most you can work up is amusement.

Crossing your arms casually over your chest to maintain at least a little modesty, you lean over the edge of the tub. You feel a drop of water work it's way down from your collarbone and over your breast. Delivering a lethargic smile, you thank him for the towel.

Ragna's brain, currently boiling inside his own skull to judge from how his face seems to getting even redder, seems unable to formulate a response.

>>38188635
You chuckle at his blush. In a way, it's just as cute as Tao playing with the yarnball.

You really shouldn't tease him anymore. You don't want the poor boy to die of embarassment, after all.

"Is something wrong?" This may be a bit of a breach of modesty, but you raise your arms anyway. "Did I miss a spot?" And here, evidently, is where Ragna's limit lies. Unable to handle the sight of your bared chest, he flees.

Or at least tries.

Spinning on his heel, he runs straight into the door that is opening into the room.

A smaller figure looks down at him from the door.

Long pink hair, and a head topped by a pair of tiny cat-ears.

"The hell is this brat doing here?" She asks, almost absentmindedly, before turning to the tub.

"And who the hell are you supposed to be?" Her eyes glint with anger, and her tone is surprisingly dark.

If the other side was an adult like Alice(?), then #3 option would be apt. But since she's dealing with another kid, she might let this one time slide and answer the question promptly.

Alice is using her late mother's favored bathtub, though Alice herself doesn't know the pink haired kid is Jubei's daughter... at the moment.

Except I'm pretty sure that by now Kokonoe isn't a kid by now since Nine became Phantom not long after the heroes have dealt with the Black Beast - which was, like, 80 years ago.

Although we don't know IC that it's really Kokonoe.

Well, being polite rarely makes situations worse.

"Alice Zief. Armagus technician." The surly catgirl raises an eyebrow, but otherwise doesn't react much. "Don't mind me, I'm just here to use the bath. I asked Jubei and he said it was alright." At the mention of the giant cat, her expression grows darker for a second, before she forces herself to exhale.

"Of course he did. Because even though he can't be arsed about-" She breathes out again, forcing herself to calm down.

"Kokonoe. Physics professor." Having introduced herself to you, she looks down at Ragna again.

Ragna, being unconscious on the floor, does nothing.

The professor, having verified that the boy isn't dead or bleeding, promptly dumped him into the hall, shutting the door behind his comatose body. Then, she began to strip.

A quick rinse later, and she joins you in the surprisingly large bath.

For a brief moment, the pair of you simply soak.

Surprisingly, it's the catgirl that breaks the silence.

"So, what's your field?" She asks, almost bored.

Special note, this bottom thing is you declaring a specialty. Your armagus. Al-Azif, has an astoundingly broad amount of flexibility, so you can do pretty much anything. Eleno Wave Physics is kind of a mystery option, brought on by a hankering to play a certain RPG. If anyone can figure out what that series is, I'll give you some more tips on what precisely is inside the mystery box.

That sure didn't take long, did it?

Well, I guess I better take care of my end of the deal.

EWP refers to the field of the so-called sound science, which hits the SCIENCE button so hard it knocked a few letters off and accidentally left an imprint that looks an awful lot like magic.

Taking this specializing gives you a big bonus to SCIENCE in general, and if you play your cards right, could give you a big in with Sector 7. The downside is that you take a big hit to your more direct combat interactions. Not that you were super-amazing at those anyway, but this is the option where you want to be engaging as far from the front lines as possible.

No stripping.

It was a bad idea then, and it's a bad idea now. Hell, I love Ar no Surge. But the Purification ceremony is still a stupid idea.

What the hell ever happened to just having a conversation at at camp or an inn?

And continuing my neck-bearding, going to a 3-D plane for AT3's battles was a stupid idea too. It makes defending your rear line harder, makes the battles too chaotic, and in general felt clunky as hell to me.

Geeze, what does it say about the way combat's gone that I liked AT1's fighting the best out of all of them?

Grimoires are everything. They're Ars Magus, Ars Armagus, Nox Nyctores AND the Azure Grimoire too
>>
>>38190346
Hey, hey, I also wasn't in favor of the stripping mechanic, I just listed out Ar Tonelico's game mechanics (as a whole).

In terms of battle systems though, I'd go with AT2's, since AT1 seems a bit too simplistic for my tastes and the blocking system for the party vanguard was pretty neat.

Oh, and Synchronicity/Dual Song Magic.

Ars Magus is the SCIENCE way to perform magic. Each Ars is recorded in a Grimoire.

Nearly EVERY FUCKING THING IN BLAZBLUE, Noel's weapon, the thing making Tsubaki blind, the Azure Grimoire, Carl's fucking sister, ALL of them are Grimoires of a kind
>>
>>38190368

Pretty much this. Grimoire is another word for a seithr using device, artifact, or other thingamabob.

Contrasting the EWP specialization, which is SCIENCING something so hard it's downright magic, the Grimoire specialization is making magic your bitch in such a way that it's basically science. This could give you major ins with the Library, or to be honest, just about anyone.

And sorry folks, given how fundamentally different these two things are, I can't let you have both.

>>38190366

Hey, don't worry. I just got a little worked up is all. My apologies.

We all have different preferences. The Vanguard system was an interesting idea, and Dual Magic remains a /really/ cool thing.

>Contrasting the EWP specialization, which is SCIENCING something so hard it's downright magic, the Grimoire specialization is making magic your bitch in such a way that it's basically science.
Sounds like Clarke's Third Law, and a reversal of it.

One is "sufficiently documented magic" while the other is "incomprehensible science".
>>
>>38190444
>>38190181

I'll stick with Grimoires, then. Might be amusing enough. It's also the main reason I'd imagine anyone would make a Nine clone, so it makes sense from an in-character perspective as well.

I'd also like to see Terumi shit approximately seven houses worth of bricks if he sees us and, hopefully, thinks Phantom managed to undo what he did.
>>
Well, if this was a choice between Sector 7 and Library...

Sector seems to be marginally better choice. It's furture away from Hazama and Relius, at least.
>>
Okay. >>38190471 has me persuaded. I'm changing my vote for EWP in >>38190274 to Grimoires.
>>
>>38190471
Does Alice only vaguely resemble Nine or does she resemble her completely?

I assume the former, since she's only probably a failed clone and/or aged differently.

Jubei would probably pick up the resemblances, not to mention being somewhat suspicious/awkward.
>>
>>38190444
i'm going with grimiores as well makes sense in the bigger picture.
>>
>>38190510

If it's enough to throw off Jubei and Kokonoe by this much, then I assume it's enough to make Terumi do a double-take with necksnapping speeds.
>>
>>38190465
Both rape physics pretty hard, to be honest. Primarily, you have the option to go off and create your own tech-tree, versus integrating into the local one.

But yeah, seems like we're pretty much down to two specialties.

EWP and Grimoires.

>>38190444
>Grimoire is another word for a seithr using device, artifact, or other thingamabob.
Tl;dr, Grimoire is everything which utilizes Seithr to perform magic.

Grimoires are split into four differing types:
Ars Magus.
Ars Armagus.
Nox Nyctores.
Azure Grimoire

They're all Grimoires despite vastly different in function, form, shape and design.

What makes Azure Grimoires so special is that they tap into the Azure (Duh). A power source within the boundary. It's been shown to have several effects on people however, touching shards of the Azure's power turned Arakune into what he is, not to mention Ragna's bad endings.

Essentially an Azure Grimoire holds within itself a miniature boundary with an Azure inside it. This means it has unlimited amounts of Seithr to utilize, on top of that you have the Azure to tap into as well.

All in all, the Grimoire specialty is probably the most broken thing that could ever be handed to us.

>>
>>38190552
>>[G]rimoires.
>>
>>38190604
Not really.

EWP opens up avenues of technology that are kind even more bullshit then you'd believe. I mean, we're talking about a civilization that, before it's downfall, was making gigantic towers that go higher than some satellites.

The only reason that they didn't become a space-faring civilization is that they were such massive dicks on the whole that they inspired a version of 9/11 that left the entire surface of their world uninhabitable and instead of fixing the issue continued to be dicks to such a degree that a subservient species they themselves created rebelled and basically crashed what was left of the party.

The fact that all three Towers work (more or less) after two apocalypses and that Reyvateils can interbreed with humanity, with a chance for their children to become Reyvateils recognized by the tower is ridiculous.

Your specialty?

"Grimoires, of course."

You haven't really given much thought to that sort of thing, and you wouldn't consider yourself an expert in much of anything but-wait, what did you say?

"Oh, really?" Kokonoe drawls in a tantalizingly familiar way. "Suppose your capacitor array is full and you want to continue to up the concentration of energy in a type-2 device, but you only have access hyper-dense solidified seithr, how would you go about that?"

You can't help but snort. It's a stupid question.

"The type-2's capacitor arrays are never meant to be full, and if they are it's generally only minutes away from exploding. There'd be no point, unless you wanted to take out the building it's in, rather than just the room." It rattles off your tongue like an obvious fact.

Kokonoe smirks and spouts off another problem, then another. They start off just as ludicrously simple as the first, but eventually she takes the training wheels off and starts asking some real questions.

You're not sure how long the two of you go back and forth, but at least by the end she's taking you seriously. You've hopped from basic combat devices, to airship engines, and even touched on the topic of Nox.

You don't approve of those on general principal, and she agrees to leave off on them.

Just being able to ask these questions and understand their answers makes you understand that 'professor' is probably undershooting it a bit for Kokonoe.

Eventually, the pair of you switch to more generalized shop-talk. Specifically, a counter for Nox Nyctores, something capable of performing to their level, but without the massive loss of life associated with their manufacture or their madness inducing qualities.

>"Well, my little Ragna grew up, so Nee-chan decides she wanted a niece to spoil! And Nu-chan was so excited too! She helped me a lot with the process, even gote some of the blood samples I needed. And Kokonoe-chan helped me with some of the science I couldn't grasp yet."
>"Aaaand... yeah, here's the result! Meet your adorable daughter, Ragna, Murakumo Unit Series Two! Alpha-1-13!"

>*Alpha comes out from behind Alice. She gives him a Big smile and rushes in to hug her father. As his daughter embraces him, Ragna finds himself smiling too. The smile of a man who resigned himself to his fate to attempt to save what sanity he had left.*

One option leads to Genesic Tager. The other leads to early Lambda-11. I guess there's also tuat option to pussy out, but fuck that, I want an adorable killing machine so I can teach her to call Alice Nee-chan

Alice herself has a broken Idea Engine installed, mind.

You know that you can mount ACWs on things other then Tager, right? Tager just happened to have one. Ignis does too. Heck, I think Relius is supposed to have something like four of them stashed somewhere.

An Idea Engine is supposed to be a more powerful version. The reason why more don't show up is likely because they're a very experimental technology.

Or 'were' at any rate.

from a scienetific stand point it is Always important to have multilpe options incase one does not work or the other turns out better.

Pfft, one solution I'll give you two.
>>

Ideally, both with priority getting an Idea Engine.

Barring any problems on procurement and mounting however, an ACW would suffice.
>>
>>38191399
What if we GATTAI them?
>>
>>38191399
It seems, they are pretty much the same thing. Except, Idea Engine is better.

It looks like pretty much a choice of what tier of tech we want to feed to Kokonoe. None, advanced, super-prototype.
>>
>>38191459
If so, not throwing -everything- to her might be a good idea, but fuck it, Sector7/Kokonoe route start.
>>
>>38191391
Well, my knowledge of the story beyond Calamity Trigger is unreliable and comes mostly from Wikis and a couple discussions I read online. OandO was under the impression ACW were like a prototype to the Idea engine, or maybe a proof of concept that there are indeed weapoms capable of rivaling the Nox Nyctores without needing to be made from one thousand tormented souls or something.

"So a weapon that can perform phenomenon intervention? What about using a resonator to..." She has so many of the pieces, you can't resist putting them together.

It's still difficult, though.

Even if you can understand how such things operate, barely, lashing the disjointed ideas and projects Kokonoe has done into a workable prototype sketch, conjured from your armagus, still take work.

And even if you know of them, there's still a problem...

The prototype design (too expensive and reliant on unproven concepts, it'll likely have to be redone simpler for the sake of creating a proof of concept) float neatly in it's hologram, while the professor turns to face you. While you've earned her respect, it would seem that you haven't really earned her trust.

"Where did you come from, anyway? You don't get that kind of education from any university I've been to. And more than that, you look way too much like..." She clicks her tongue. "Who the hell are you, Zief?"

>"Alice Zief, Armagus technician."

The good thing about this is... it's totally true.
The bad thing about this is... it's totally true.
>>
>>38191878

"I don't really know."

It's a cop-out answer, and one you find yourself already hating before you even finish saying it. Explaning to Kokonoe the sum of all the memories you can remember is a process that takes all of a few minutes.

You don't normally let it bother you, but after being able to keep up with Kokonoe on advanced seithr physics and engineering, your lack of origin bothers you.

You had to come from somewhere.

You had to have been taught all this.

The resources to create something as potent as Al-Azif couldn't have come from nowhere, either.

So, where?

Where did come from, what happened? Why did you wake up below the seithr line, how did you survive it? What cause the crater you were in, did it create your wounds as well?

The professor at least understands your frustration.

"If you give me a DNA sample, I can run a comparison." She offers. You know as well as she does that this isn't simple altruism. Finding out who you are would give her leverage to work with. And then there's the slight issue you just realized now...

What if you don't want to go back to what you were?

You're happy now, but you don't remember anything else. What would it be like, to face other people expecting another you, one that effectively no longer exists? Would you be forcing yourself into a role you don't want to satisfy their needs, their desires?

Or is this just some selfishness because you're afraid of what the answer is? That part of you doesn't want to go back to what was?

Either way, you reach your decision quickly.

hmm rather i'm rather sure the memories will come back on their own besides DNA samples carry a lot of risk with them.
>>
>>38192260
>[X] Don't give a Sample.

It's not like the current Alice will disappear once everyone finds out who she really is.
She can find out the truth and then decide afterwards if she's fine with it or not.

The possibility of the DNA sample being 50% similar to that of Kokonoe would ignite a firestorm in her head.
>>
>>38192312
Shit, highlighted the wrong choice.

Should be this:
>[X] Give a Sample.
>>
>>38192260
>[X] Don't give a Sample.
>>
>>38192260

>[X] Give a Sample.

This is either going to derail everything for a very long time to come, or not make much of a difference.

Either way, I've always been a fan of the mystery box, or so to speak.

You part with a lock of your hair.

Regardless of how afraid you might be, you can't allow something like that to control your life.

Drying off and dressing is an almost solemn affair. Stepping into the cool hall, you can see that Ragna apparently recovered from his concussion and left, leaving the hallway empty and dark.

You exchange a few more pleasantries with the professor, walking down the stairs until you encounter Jubei again.

What follows is a long, awkward pause as the two stare at each other.

It's about at this point that you realize that while Kokonoe's hands are fairly normal looking, there also appear to be rather sharp points on the end of each individual finger. And that her canines appear abnormally long. The old cat himself seems fairly stiff, and for once a little unsure of himself.

Maybe you should intervene, or...

Thank the old cat for sending up Ragna with the towel, diffuse the situation as best as possible.

Aaaand that's it for today, folks.

Next week, hopefully we'll actually start on time rather then two hours late, and I'll stop being distracted by every other thing to cross my field of vision.

In the meantime, I'll be doing the usual Q&A, on top of listening to whatever feedback you guys have to give.

Regretfully the pace remains just a shade above that of an iceberg, but next week I have a three day weekend. Provided nothing goes wrong, I'll be able to run on Thursday AND Friday night.

Hopefully, anyway.

In the meantime, comments, criticism?

And, incidentally, is anyone else weirded out that Murakumo Ragna is enough of a thing that it has it's own name?

Hey. Just got here today. Had the idea to run something like this myself, but lacked the confidence. I like what you're doing so far, and I'm damn pissed that timezones will probably keep me from participating.

And, uh, if there's a tie, you should probably just roll 1d2 or something.
>>
>>38193314

I'm liking everything so far.

And no, I'm not so much weirded out at that it's that much of a thing, as that I'm weirded out that they haven't done more with it yet. You'd think canon R63 fapbait would get more spotlight, but maybe what's his face, the writer, is afraid she'd steal too much of Noel's spotlight.
>>
>>38193314
Thanks for running.

So... Them waves man. What would've our notmurakumo form been capable of if anons decided to go that route instead of grimoires? Mindfucking on a massive scale? Songs that tear reality a new one or make the Boundary our bitch?

>Murakumo Ragna
She's Moris other waifu iirc, so absolutely nothing weird there.

Wait /what/?

Alpha-01 is canon?!

Where the hell did this come from?
>>
>>38193766
In simple terms, you'd be a solid head and shoulders above everyone when it came to metallurgy and infrastructure design and creation. Your 'NotMurakumo' could've been:

Orbital Ion Cannons
Giant Fuck-Off Towers
Mecha
Making Terumi more or less cease to exist
Not being fucked if something were to happen to the Seithr

And there's plenty of other things you guys probably could've come up, given the generaly ridiculous levels of tech that comes up in AT.
>>
>>38193766
Going by Ar Tonelico canon,we'd be best off while having a partner, since that gives us a lot more versatility in combat:
>have him tank for you while you charge up a goddamn Nuke
>buff your partner until he's nigh-invincible and deals multiple times his base damage
>keep healing him so that he comes pretty close to being immortal of the duration of the fight
Reivateil are fucking broken.
>>
>>38193907
Hm, thanks. So it would've been more about underlying tech than Song Magic itself.
A shame that anons went after grimoires unanimously, because there was a quite a lot of potential there I think, and even with an added bonus of ending Terumi sooner and making a cute little Nu-13 reyvateil imouto.
Well, whtaever. Looking forward to the next thread.
>>
>>38193802

I think she was from some obscure reference guide or something? I can't find the source anymore so there's a good chance that what I read was total bullshit. If I do ever find it again, I'll link it in one of the threads or something.
