Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is cloudy, and the date is still January 1.

You are Kyril Torikov and you had some good news and some bad news. The good news was the battle that was raging across the City all of last night had finally died down. The bad news was, apart from your injuries, you were going to have to make a choice that could affect your future. Without the control mechanisms implemented by Project VERDICT, you were essentially a free man again. The City would take exception to that however. Your two choices were either to submit or rebel and you remember what happened the last time. You died. Still that was a decision that could wait. There was still some confusion up above in the aftermath of the battle. They wouldn’t come down on you for a while yet. At least that was Nayuta assured you. In the mean time you could use that time to further your deception. That or go on a much needed vacation.

Another pressing issue was your Ability. It was also the reason you were restrained to your bed and mostly immobile. You had disabled the limiter. As a result, a whole squad of Anti-Skill had been reduced to paste. You were a powerful telekinetic with the control to match. Death had taken away the latter. The current stopgap that prevented you from being a walking human blender immobilise you. If you were leaving it was going to be in a wheelchair. Though if you liked moving your limbs Nayuta had offered to install a new limiter. She was going to make sure it was permanent this time. The question was what you wanted. A return to power or permanent nerf?

“I think I’ll leave it off for a moment,” you told Nayuta.

“You do realise that you will be a threat to those around you right nii-chan?”

“Not right now. He won’t be,” Heaven Canceller returned, “I’m sure we can ease some of his restrictions, re-teach him control.”

“The City isn’t going to stand for this,” Nayuta stated neutrally.

She was stating a fact thoughHeaven Canceller’s face remained unchanged. It looked like he wouldn’t budge on the issue. She sighed.

“Well it’s not like I’m going to argue with you about it,” she finally said, “Nii-chan, take a week off. We’ll probably have that much time before they notice something’s up. Take care.”

After she left, Heaven Canceller had turned to you.

“Well, no time like the present,” he held up a set of keys, “Take it from me, you’re going to need it.”

“Are you sure?” you asked, “What if I mess up?”

Heaven Canceller shrugged. Either he knew something you didn’t or he was awfully trusting. With little choice you reached out with a thought, like a small hand to pluck the keys from his palm, while making sure he remained untouched. His hand seemed to shrink, as if coming under some kind of pressure before the keys slowly lifted off. They floated in front of you without incident.

“That’s good,” Heaven Canceller said, “It means I was successful.”

You weren’t sure what he meant by that but it was probably not important. You could ask but your Ability was working safely. That should be enough for you.

“You’re required to stay for one more day but afterwards you can be on your way. I think you’re also safe enough to allow more visitors so is there anyone you want to see?”

>>
He smiled as you gave out their names. As he walked out you noticed that he was favouring his hand. That really made you wonder what he really did to you. Maybe you could ask him about it later. Right now, you were waiting for your visitors to arrive. Sparky was the first to arrive. You wondered if you’ve ever seen her happy ever since you’ve died.

“We’re going to stop this war,” were the first words out of her mouth, “and you’re going to help me.”

Of course she was going to make you.

“I would like to think you are beyond championing pointless causes,” Asuka then made her entrance, “Though I suppose that is a thing adolescents do these days.”

You were expecting a fight to break out, given her comments. Sparky held back, if only because of the location.

“How are you feeling today?” Asuka ignored the glaring.

“I’m fine actually,” you replied, “Can’t move much though.”

Sparky seemed upset, well, even more than usual, and questioned Asuka,

“You knew?”

“Honestly, I am not sure why you are so infuriated by that,” Asuka replied flippantly, “Besides, you are making a poor showing as a little sister. Not even a ‘how are you?’ or ‘are you alright?’ as a greeting?”

“He lied, he broke our promise,” she argued.

“Which one? The one where he would keep Last Order safe? I do not see her in any danger at the moment. Or was it because he did not tell you that he was still alive? If so, think about it a bit and get over it. I know I did.”

“What could possibly justify any thing he did?”

You probably should say something before this argument got out of hand. Though what to say?

"Girls, please don't fight here. I'm sorry I did not let you know when I came back. I wasn't in my right mind right out of the gate. I could have checked in earlier, but I didn't. Asuka, please don't goad her too much here."
>>
“Shall I spell it out for you then?” Asuka asked.

Her tone suggested that Sparky may be a bit of a slow child. You interrupted before Sparky could burst in to outrage,

“No. I think I can speak for myself.”

They both turned to you, one still annoyed, the other pleasantly surprised.

“I have to say Sparky that when I tell people I’m alive I’m going against orders. It puts everyone in danger. You because they can and will use everything I hold dear as a means of control. Me? I’ll probably end up as a brain in a jar if they have their way.”

“You can’t be serious.”

Asuka sighed at Sparky’s outburst.

“I also had a lot of things on my plate since I came back,” you continued, “When I came back I wasn’t all there, brain damage apparently. I had to deal with that. Besides, you aren’t the last person I’ve told.”

“He is right,” Asuka chimed in, “I believe our Dorm Supervisor has yet to be informed.”

A smile had graced her features though Sparky looked only mildly contemplative. It took a while but then Sparky finally said,

“I guess I could forgive you for now. But you’re still helping me stop this war.”

“Right,” you sighed, “How was your night Asuka?”

“Personally, I had fun, as did my mother. I have found that we have several things in common. As for your friends, I believe Sagara and the others went to ground and hid like bitches.”

“I was trying to keep my friends safe,” Sparky interjected.

“I suppose but I always was of the school that the best defence is a good offence.”

“Of course you would be,” Sparky sighed before muttering, “Battle maniac.”

Sparky’s night had been tamer, coordinating with Judgement to evacuate students caught in the fighting. Between her and Kuroko, she didn’t even encounter any Code M face to face. By the time visiting hours were over, you had moved on to more harmless topics.

The time is evening, the weather is cloudy, and the date remains unchanged.

With visiting hours over Sparky was the first to leave the room but Asuka had hung back a bit.

“I am setting up something but I need your help, would you be willing to give it to me?” she whispered conspiratorially.

“What are you planning this time?”

“A practical joke.”

“On who? Shirai?”

“Now that would be telling. I cannot divulge the specifics if you are not committed. For operational security reasons ofcourse.”

“Hey Kudou, visiting hours are over you coming?” Sparky shouted from the door.

“I am,” she replied and turned back to you, “Well?”

There was no question about it so you just said yes.

“Splendid, I shall come collect you tomorrow,” Asuka smiled and left.

The time is morning, the weather is cool, and the date is now January 2.

Over the night, you had been fed intelligence regarding the upcoming mission. Apparently she had obtained some tickets to a concert, two tickets to be precise. The plan was to gift one to Sparky. That was straight forward. Asuka could handle that. Your mission, now that you had accepted it, was to gift the other ticket to a male friend of your choice. The message was clear, Sparky needed to get laid, or close enough to it. There were several candidates to choose from. Before that though, you had another thing to settle.

You were being discharged and while Heaven Canceller had cleared that. Well, no one was in your room. Instead, there was a wheelchair with some clothes. The clothes included a plain wrestling mask and some sunglasses. You supposed that would have to do, given that your helmet was still being repaired. The problem was that you were still immobile. It made trying to get in to a pair of pants incredibly difficult. You wanted to be done before Asuka arrived because it would be kind of embarrassing then. Calling for help would be a blow to your pride though. Then again, you did have questions for Heaven Canceller so it would be killing two birds with one stone there.

“I suppose you had a question for me?” Heaven Canceller asked.

“Yeah doc, what exactly did you do to me?”

He went silent at that. That had you worried.

“The mechanics of Ability Use are complicated and intimately tied to the brain,” he started, “Each case is pretty much unique, excluding twins. You were more complicated than most others.”

“Get to the point.”

Now you were just getting annoyed.

“To put it in simple terms, your Ability’s control centre was damaged and I had to use other parts of the brain to compensate. In short, you’re paralysed from the neck down, not really much different from missing three limbs to be honest.”

“But I have control?”

“Theoretically,” he replied, “You broke thirteen bones taking your car keys out of my hand. Now that I think about it, it was probably a good idea that you didn’t attempt putting on pants telekinetically.”

You agreed.

“But I wouldn’t know how dangerous your Ability is right now since you are in control. What you can do with it would require a proper test and well,” he trailed.

That would be more trouble than it was worth.

“Then again dressing yourself and moving about would require the use of you Ability since I’m certainly not going to. We have nurses for that. Surely you could have called one instead of me to dress you.”

“There will be no need for that,” Asuka arrived, “I think he will be fine in my care.”

Heaven Canceller raised an eyebrow before quickly vacating the room.

“You are at my tender mercies now Kyril Torikov,” she smiled.

It wasn’t a very reassuring one.

“Please be gentle.”

She was. Your car was still in the parking lot and as you were wheeled up to it, you noticed someone by your car. You recognised her. It was Asuka’s mother. Apparently she was Asuka’s partner in crime and was hoping to drive.

Well it wasn’t like you were in any condition to drive. That said you had a hunch that if you applied your ability correctly, you should be able to operate the car without raising a finger. You thought better of it though. First, it was your car so you didn’t want to trash it just yet and second, Asuka was along for the ride. With great reluctance, you managed to wiggle the keys out of your pocket and handed it over.

“Alright, thanks Tori-kun, I’ve always wanted to try a muscle car but Tomo-kun never lets me drive anything but a European or Japanese brand.”

You looked at Asuka.

“Yes, she knows,” Asuka provided, “I cannot hide my thoughts from her, to my eternal regret. However my family does have a history of the supernatural sort so you can trust that she will keep quiet about it. You will have to excuse her tendency to ramble.”

“I’ll have you know that I am not a loose woman,” her mother replied, “Besides who am I going to tell, your father or uncle Shamu?”

That was what you were afraid of but there was little choice now but to trust her. As the three of you got on the road, the conversation seemed to bounce in every direction. Lady Kudou was a chatterbox it seemed,

“Classy Buddhist blessings, I wonder who Tori-kun hired to do this. Have you thought of getting in to the family business at last Asuka?”

“For the last time mother I am not getting in to the family business,” Asuka stressed, “Not for the foreseeable future at least.”

“Right, because you’d rather just marry Tori-kun instead and have him be a family man?”

“Mother, please, can I just prank my cute and beloved junior in peace?”

“You mean play matchmaker for her, sure,” she chirped, “So where are we going again Tori-kun?”

You weren’t sure whether giving Touma seats to a concert was good or bad luck. On one hand, he was sitting next to Sparky. On the other, quite literally, he could negate any sparks that came his way. You were dropped off at a familiar boys’ dormitory. Lady Kudou, and Asuka, had taken off after that. The former because she now had a vehicle in which to joyride in, the latter stayed to keep her in check. That the dorms were now strictly now enforcing a no-females rule. It was supposed to stop Code M infiltrators though you doubt it was of any use at all. You actually sat there and pondered how to get to Touma’s room. Then you remembered that you could simply use your Ability to get there.

Remembering Heaven Canceller’s talk, you carefully focused a nudge on your wheelchair. It almost sent you speeding down the hall until you clamped down on it. Precision it seemed required more than just deliberate thought. It meant calculation, which until then had been done with mere guesswork or by a computer. Still, you focused, hearing the metallic frame of the wheelchair creak as your grip on the area around it tightened. Thankfully, it moved and you were still in control.

Success!

Sadly, you couldn’t quite get your arms moving in an appreciable fashion so you had to just ram his door a few times.

“Touma.”

“Kyril?”

“That’s me, can I come in?”

“Sure, I guess,” he was pretty confused, “Please tell me you’re not trying to set me up or anything.”

“What makes you say that?”

“I remember the last time you were in a wheelchair. You didn’t tell me Sparky was there.”

That was a rather long time ago by your reckoning. One would think he’d have forgotten about it.

“I thought my exact words were, ‘a few friends,’ and she is my friend,” you argued.

“Right.”

“Anyway how’d you like to go see a concert?”

That didn’t sound promising but you produced the ticket anyway.

“That’s what I thought,” he smiled, “While I usually don’t say it but it’s just your bad luck. I already have tickets, two of them in fact. Both Index and I are going.”

He produced his own set of tickets. They were for the VIP boxes with a backstage pass for exclusive access.

Goddamnit.

“Wait, where is Index anyway?”

“She’s with Kaoru right now why?”

It was probably nothing but you still had a mission to accomplish and every scrap of intelligence was an asset.

“Just for the record, you did not perform sexual favours to acquire those tickets right?” you asked.

“What? No!” he exclaimed, “Arisa and I are just friends.”

Your eyebrow rose. Since you didn’t have eyebrows and the mask obscured the action the effort was a bit moot. It was time to try a different approach,

“Didn’t you owe me a favour?”

“Uh no?”

“Not even for the Sisters Job?”

“What?”

“Nevermind,” you sighed, “What if I owed you a favour?”

“We’re friends we shouldn’t have to owe each other anything. What are you really up to Kyril?”

“I haven’t seen Sparky smile once ever since I, well,” you paused long enough for him to nod, “Would you like to go with her? Cheer her up a bit? For me?”

“What makes you think I could cheer her up?”

“Weren’t you talking to her a day or two ago, before New Years?”

“I don’t see how that’s supposed to convince me. She was only asking if I could help.”

“But that’s it, she trusts you at least. And I don’t know anyone else really.”

“Alright, I’ll go,” he finally said.

But before you could celebrate he added,

“But she’s not my type and I will be punching you in the face later if I so much as catch you trying to set us up.”

That was fair. You regrouped with Asuka at a familiar coffee shop in time for lunch.

The time is now lunch, the weather is warmer, and the date remains unchanged.

“The Railgun fell for it hook, line, and sinker,” Asuka reported, “Though it is a shame that your target was wise to your scheme. No matter, it simply means we have to be more discreet. It would be more plausible that we already had tickets and thus chose to give them away would it not?”

Speaking of the concert,

“What is the point of the concert anyway?”

“Well originally it was supposed to be a New Years concert but other event prevented it from being so,” Asuka answered, “Apart from that I believe it would be for morale reasons. The City could use something cheerful to keep the kids’ minds off of the war and everything.”

“I like the sound of that, so why not? I still think we should have given the other ticket to Shirai.”

“I entertained the thought. It was a moot point in the end as her responsibilities would not allow her to attend. She is one of the few teleporters in the City after all,” Asuka explained.

“Alright, so we have a date tomorrow, what do you want to do today?”

“I would not call it a date just yet, not without the promise of violence, bloodshed, property damage, or the theft of an object worth millions.”

“Give it time,” you said simply.

As if on cue, your temporary cell phone started ringing. It was Nayuta and you pretty sure it was going to be a call about work.

Episode End. No interlude tonight, I seem to be blacking out every five minutes.
