October 12, UC 0084.

You are Commander Dominic O'Hara, and it's a LONG way down from where you're standing.

The helium-carrier-turned-battleship Nagato has been positioned in geosynchronous orbit high above the city of Leipzig, once part of the Federal Republic of Germany. Defrah's oriented her with her prow facing the Earth below you, allowing your ballute-equipped mobile suits to launch straight down into the atmosphere. On Karen's orders, ALICE can also fire the Nagato's eight “forward” turrets at ground targets, or her four “aft” turrets in reverse, or up to three turrets in any direction laterally. Add in the point defense guns and Emma and Christina's mobile suits, and you figure anyone who tried to interrupt your orbital assault on the Leipzig Newtype Research Lab would have to have a death wish.

You walk the Lilium out onto the port-side catapult, carrying your uninflated ballute in front of you like a pillowy shield, while on the starboard side Carya and Catrina do the same.

“We're aiming you towards a large woodland to the west of the city,” Karen informs you. “Near a town called Wallendorf. The facility is on the edge of the Auwald, about sixteen miles from your drop zone. You'll be coming down in the day to reduce visibility of your ionization trail, and you'll have only an hour or so until you get the cover of night on your side.”

“That's still a long ways out,” Carya observes, probably looking over a digital map on her own display. “And near the end we'll be moving through suburbs. Lots of prying eyes.”

“The heat signature could give us away if we came down any closer,” Audrey reminds her. “And abusing our stealth systems that early could tip them off and give them time to prepare a response.”

“That was our understanding,” Karen agrees. “I'm handing things off to Ops for now. No matter what you run into down there, come back alive. That's an order.”

“Yes, ma'am,” you reply calmly. “There was some terrain down there that looked promising. Noel? Can you check out the approach from the south for fixed artillery positions?”

“One moment,” Anderson replies tersely. “Yes. There's a wooded ridge to the south, about three miles out.”

“That'll be our first objective,” you declare. “Haman, please set that as a waypoint.”

“Got it, Dom.”

“Noel, distribute that data for me. Everyone else, fall in and stand by for launch.”

After the familiar sensation of massive acceleration, you and Carrina fall in next to each other as you hurtle towards the Earth. Since it's already close enough to fill your view you can't say it's getting “bigger”, but the features on the ground are getting noticeably more pronounced as you fall. Somewhere behind you Ilia Pazom and Marida launch, followed immediately by Cynthia and Diana. They'll come down a few minutes after your own team, giving you the chance to secure the DZ if necessary.

“Thirty seconds to radio silence, deploying ballute,” Carrina eventually announces as a hemispheric shell of heat-treated balloon cells expands out from the Viola's arm.

“Also deploying,” you reply, punching in the commands on a small keypad you your left. “Talk to you three later.”

And then, silence.

In your mind you can feel that Carrina and Rossweisse are fine, though Rosse's always seemed nervous at the prospect of falling nearly a hundred miles through the atmosphere. And she's perfectly right to be: even with the ballute acting as your heat shield, and eve with the gas units venting coolant, it's starting to get warm in the Lilium's tandem cockpit. The interior of your machine glows red as an ionization trail forms in your wake, the air itself catching fire as you plummet deeper into the ever-thickening atmosphere beneath you. Tongues of brighter orange flame flicker and dance around the edges of your protective ballute.

The vibration in your seat build as the Lilium is buffeted by crosswinds and patches of turbulent air, but things seem to be going smoothly so far.

“Sixty seconds till we fire retros,” Audrey announces from the cockpit of the Iris. “Prep for separation.”

“Aye,” you reply, fingers hovering over the controls. When Audrey finally gives you the signal you flare the extra thrusters mounted all around the Lilium and Iris into life, before righting it midair and pushing the throttle up to full reverse. The whole machine shakes violently under the strain of deceleration, and all around your panoramic monitors you can see the trees and low hills of the Saxon countryside.

“This could get rough!” you comment nervously as you eye the rush of oncoming trees, all the while mentally preparing yourself to fire all of your thrusters should the ballute systems fail now.

“Hang on!”

At the last moment before you hit the forest canopy, you spot a problem: a talus cone of debris. After the second world war piles of reinforced concrete from bunkers and bricks from bombed-out buildings were dumped in the forests all over Europe, and Germany had a *lot* of that sort of debris lying around. The pile of junk you're headed for may not be enough to damage your machine to any real degree, but some of your more sensitive systems probably wouldn't appreciate the shock.

Even as the proximity alarms blare you're on the controls, pushing the Lilium out into a spinning roll to one side. You crush an unfortunate elm tree that happens to have grown up in the wrong place, but otherwise the landing is smooth. None of the amber warning lights from your joint surfaces or detection equipment come on, so you quickly purge the extra thruster equipment. It'd just interfere with the airflow around your separated forms if you're forced to transform with it on.

"Not bad," Haman observes as she pops off her helmet and unzips her pilot suit a little, clearly planning for a long couple of hours in the rather snug cockpit. "Last time you did this you broke your nose, right?"

You hear Audrey laugh over the comms. "That's right... man, you looked like a mess."

Haman merely shrugs. "You're laughing alot for someone who was half-panicked when it happened."

"She has a point, Audrey," Carrina agrees as her machine approaches. "Were we spotted, you think?"

"Doubtful," Rossweisse replies...

"Anything more definitive than that?" you press.

"No," Rosse admits. "I didn't get a good look at it."

"Well, switch on the Minovsky scanners," you order. "See if we can pick anything up."

When your teammates follow your orders, you're surprised by the results.

"Heavy interference?" Audrey mutters. "Damn, it's so thick you could cut it with a knife."

"We had ten to twenty miles of range under good atmospheric conditions," Haman points out. "So that puts the airport far enough north to be a problem."

Suddenly, four fast-moving contacts appear on your scanners: your second team, falling rapidly to Earth just five miles high. It seems that's the maximum range your sensors will operate at right now with whatever's interfering with them.

"Jeez," you mutter. "We've got five miles of sensor range right now, assuming that's Third. Something's screwing with us."

"Could be Titans has learned to counter the Minovsky scanner," Haman suggests. "Though I hope it's something else."

Not too much later, and Ilia and the Puru clones make landfall nearby. All four machines and pilots seem like they're in good shape.

"We're here," Ilia hails you. "What's the plan of attack? I spotted a lowland marsh that runs all the way to the main river, right where we need to go."

"Or we could take the route straight to the overwatch point," Carrina adds. "It'd get us set up a bit faster, but moving through the suburbs may get us noticed."

"The wetlands also take us close to the airport," Aurdrey warns you. "If we went that route we'd need to keep a low profile."

"We'll wait for darkness and follow the wetlands," you order. "From there we can follow the river south towards the overwatch point."

"Got it," Marida replies. "Should we dig in, maybe?"

"Probably no need," Cynthia replies. "Not for an hour or two."

"Right, everyone keep low, and keep an eye on your sensors," you add.

Minutes tick by. The sun sinks towards the horizon, and the shadows all around you deepen. The forest is quiet and empty, and darkens quickly. A bit of glow in the distance to the north tells you there's a city there, but aside from that there are few if any signs of human activity.

As the minutes add up into an hour and a half or so, it's finally dark enough for you to start heading southeast.

"Stay low," Carrina reminds your team. "Move slow, keep your heat emissions down."

"Carrina," you reply, "keep an eye on your sensors. I want a good reading as we pass the airport. Got it?"

"Right, Dom," the sisters reply as one. "I'll take our northern flank."

It takes much longer than usual to pick your way through the marsh, but it actually pays off. Your mobile suits manage to stay low enough and dark enough that a casual passerby might not notice them from much more than a hundred yards. Strange, you never thought something this massive could possibly be sneaky under gravity.

"We're passing by the Leipzig airport," Carrina announces. "I've got... well, shit. Sixteen contacts, all mobile suits."

"Seems like Titans brought security for the Labs," Rosse concludes. "No idea what class of machines they are."

"Any attack on the labs will bring those guys into play," Cynthia mutters to herself. "Can we really leave 'em at our backs?"

"If we attacked, there's a good chance that the Newtype Lab itself could manage a response," Ilia reminds her.

"A lab?" Diana asks. "With enough weapons to face all of us?"

Sixteen might not be the grand total number. Gotta consider the possibility that a couple or so of them are sortied out and patrolling the lab vicinity right at this moment.

It would also depend on what particular MS they're fielding. Base jabber equipped or transformation capable suits are particular stuff we need to look out for. But if it's OYW era suits or just Quels and Hizacks, we've got some leeway at least.

It's not far off your intended path to divert to the airport, which thankfully faces a wooded hillside. Just before its crest you and Carrina lower your machines to the dirt and rely on the zoom optics in their heads.

After several minutes you shoot a contact link from one of the Lilium's hands.

"What've you got?"

"We've identified at least six Quels," Carrina tells you. "The hangar facilities seem big enough to have subflight units for them. There are also four machines which look like Hizacks modified for high performance."

"They're carrying unusual beam weapons," you add. "Haman? Those look like any Zeon designs you know of?"

She shakes her head. "It looks like it'd be a Zeon design, but then again so does a lot of Titans tech."

"It's long," Rosse comments. "Its stock seems like it has a beam emitter."

"It's not just a regular old Hizack," Audrey concludes. "Then there's the Gaplants."

"At least two," you sigh. "Possibly more. It's a real mixed bag, but they've got numbers on their side and enough upgraded machines and subflight systems to pose a threat."

"I'm not sure anymore," Carrina admits. "It feels bad to leave something like this for later."

"When the time comes we'll have to ask Karen to bombard the shit out of this place," you tell your team. "For now we should keep moving."

"Agreed," Carrina replies as your two machines crawl backwards to remain unseen as you withdraw.

You quickly report your discovery to Ilia and the Purus before moving on towards the river, which unfortunately flows past a small suburban community. The lights there tell you that people are still going about an evening of shopping, dining, and otherwise ordinary life.

This is probably going to make it tougher to slip by unseen.

"This is gonna sound stupid," you admit, "but what if we just jumped over the whole suburb here?"

"That's pretty dumb," Haman agrees, "but it could actually work. And if it did there'd be no chance of accidentally shorting anything in the water."

"I hate it," Ilia counters. "But jumping the river here is just as obvious."

"Our machines aren't water-proofed," Cynthia points out. "We'll have to jump somewhere at some point anyway."

"Can you tell us when to jump?" you ask Carrina. "Use your magic Newtype eye thingy?"

There's an audible pause. "We really need to come up with a cooler name for it," Carrina replies with a sigh, "but yeah. I can do it. Just wait for my signal."

"Everyone, get in position," you order. "Make the jump on Carrina's mark."

Nothing happens.

You sit in your cockpit, body tensed, feeling Carrina's mind as she focuses on the task at hand, drinking in every detail of the dozens of possible futures which have yet to occur.

Seconds pass into minutes.

"JUMP!" Carrina shouts over her comm. The six mobile suits of your two teams leap into the night sky, with Ilia's modified Barzam lagging a second behind.

Your mobile suits sail through the night sky as you tap your thrusters to adjust your course. The whole suburb slides silently below you, and you finally land gently on the far side next to what looks like a small mom-and-pop salvage yard.

Oddly enough, the little girl you dropped in on in the middle of walking her dog doesn't seem to mind the intrusion.

"Ah, so it's this one," Carrina says over the comm, baffling you and your teammates before waving Ilia and the Purus on.

The girl, however, waves happily at your gundam as you stare at her on the screen, completely nonplussed. With no real idea what else to do, you wave back before putting one finger to the "face" of your mobile suit.

Zooming in shows you that the girl gives you an understanding nod before turning her puppy the other way and walking back towards her home.

"That was... actually kind of cute," Haman mutters to nobody in particular. "Always had a soft spot for kids."

"Didn't pin you as the type," Audrey replies as you turn to catch up with your team. Haman remains silent in thought.

Finally, after three hours of creeping a silently as six giant robotic killing machines can, you reach your destination: a large, wooded park on a hillside overlooking the river, with a clear line of sight into the forest where the Leipzig Lab is located.

"Perfect," Marida half-sings to herself. "We can see *everything* from here!"

"Marida, Cynthia, Diana. I want you just on the far side of the crest in a hull-down position oriented north," you order, catching the three young women somewhat off guard with your suddenly serious tone. "Ilia, I want you positioned behind them. Watch for for a flanking run. If your position is compromised fall back into the woods for concealment."

"Got it," Marida replies.

Ilia's Barzam flashes you a thumbs-up. "Don't worry, I'll watch your backs."

You also take a moment to contact the Nagato. The connection is weak, but you manage to convince Karen to hit the Titans forces as they sortie out over the river and marshlands to the north of your position. ALICE runs the numbers, and determines that ship-to-ship missiles are the only weapon in the Nagato's arsenal capable of making such a strike through atmospheric perturbations and at that distance.

"Which leaves us," Rosse observes. "Are we bait, or a striking force?"

If we can get close before the group is detected, we might be able to prevent the Matabiri from being sortied in the first place. It takes time to get something like that up and running, and if we're lucky on dice rolls, we might come across it in the middle of maintenance. Something that big and complex must need to be serviced fairly often...

Haman nods in front of you. "Know your enemy and you need not fear a hundred battles."

"Bullshit," Carrina insists. "A man who's not afraid to die is an idiot... but point taken. Rushing in seems like a mistake."

"Let's cross the river," you offer. "Engage stealth and move in quick."

"Right," Haman replies. "Stealth field engaged. We should be able to run it plenty long enough for this op."

With your stealth jammers active and given the late hour, the oldtype staff of the lab has no idea you're coming. You make it to the boundaries of their grounds undetected, and cling to the edge of the forest where it's been cleared to build the series of buildings that house the testing and fabrication facilities.

"Two main fabrications plants, two hangars," Rosse observes. "Two civilian barracks, a smaller barracks, an office building and mess hall."

"Then there's that large domed building," Haman mutters. "Somehow I feel that's where the Newtype testing is centered."

"You're not wrong," Carrina replies. "I can feel at least two newtypes in there. One's even all-natural."

"And the other is like me," Rossweisse finishes the thought. "A cyber-newtype... and she knows we're here."

"She's not doing anything though," you point out. "And the natural newtype is just... he doesn't even know we're here."

"Must be dumber than a bag of rocks," Haman shakes her head. "How could he not notice SIX of us out here?"

>The cyber-newtype hasn't reacted yet. Maybe we could try contacting her?

Well, whoever the cyber-newtype is she hasn't alerted anyone yet, and she seems almost indifferent to your presence. So attacking right at this moment seems like it would be a rush.

"Maybe try and make contact with her?" you suggest. "Couldn't hurt."

Haman sighs. "Seriously? I mean, I know talking to people seems to work for you every damn time, but still. It feels like some day it's gonna backfire."

"Honestly I'd prefer a dialogue as well," Rossweisse admits. "And she would likely know where the Matabiri is."

"Okay, so how do we talk to her?" Audrey asks. "We're here, she's over there."

Project the feelings of happiness/contentment from the cyber newtypes in our care. For now, go with Rosse since she's the one willing to reach out as well in this case. It might be enough to pique the interest of the recipient and make her approach us in curiousity.

"Rossweisse," you announce. "Get her to come over here."

"Huh?" she starts. "Me? I can't!"

"Sure you can," you insist. "You used to be in a similar position, so she may be more able to relate to you."

"But my brainwaves..." she begins hesitantly. "I didn't want to be the one to tell you this, but things that would be easy for you aren't for the rest of us."

You're taken aback by her words. "Wait, what do you mean by that?"

"She means you put out the most brainwaves out of all of us," Haman replies. "A little less than Carya and Catrina put together, if the data we've compiled is correct."

"So in terms of raw power, you're the single greatest newtype yet discovered," Carrina replies. 'Though your control has always been average at best."

"So can we work together, maybe?" you ask Rossweisse. In response the escape hatch on the Sericea pops open, and the whole machine takes a knee. Rossweisse climbs out of the cockpit and moves towards you.

You kneel and scoop her up in the Lilium's hand and pop the hatch open, the panoramic monitors not quite aligning with the edges of your view outside. You meet Rosse's eyes briefly as she climbs in with you and Haman. For her part, Haman clears out space for her friend and sits in the Lilium's palm.

"I've never heard of this being done," you admit as Haman watches interestedly.

"We'll figure something out," Rosse reassures you.

"Relax", you tell Rossweisse. "Try to clear your mind."

You're making this shit up as you go along of course, but it's probably good advice anyway if this is ever going to work.

Which much to your surprise, it does.

Your mind is swiftly assailed by the strange sensation of being three places at once: in your seat, in Haman's usual spot in front of you, and inside a completely different building several hundred feet away. And you quickly discern that you're not alone here with Rossweisse.

"I am."

"Great. All yours."

"You're not like the others," the voice observes. "You're like me... no, perhaps not like me at all."

"You feel empty," Rosse replies. "I remember what that was like."

"So you were like me once?" the voice asks, and you think you detect a hint of uncertainty. "How? If you were as empty and false as I am now, how did you change?"

Rossweisse seems to ponder the point for a moment. "I guess I had the right support and the right encouragement. I have friends and loved ones now, and a reason to live. A reason to be strong and to fight."

"I had that once," the voice replies sadly. "It was taken from me."

"Is there anyone supporting you now?"

"No. I had hoped, but was disappointed."

"Then leave," Rossweisse tells her. "We can break your chains, and maybe help you find your way again."

"I'm sorry," the voice replies shakily. "You seem like nice people. But Ein has figured it out. I can feel it. He knows you contacted me."

"When the time comes, remember that you always have a choice," you tell the cyber-newtype before severing your connection to her.

You quickly transfer Rossweisse back to her own cockpit, but not before she gives you a few quiet words of gratitude for helping her speak with the still-unknown cyber newtype. Then you hear alarms begin to sound.

You shut the Lilium's cockpit hatch and power the center panel of the monitor back on.

"Haman, what've we got?" you ask.

"Two contacts, emerging from the dome!" she calls.

Audrey calls you from the Iris, her helmeted face appearing in a small window on your HUD.

"I'm contacting Karen, the missile barrage should be coming down in sixty," she tells you.

"Alright, eyes on the prize!" Carrina bellows as the Viola hefts its beam weapon. "Here they come!"

From the side of the domed lab building emerge two mobile suits: a purplish machine stands in front with two large binders at its shoulders like oversized shields, and is clearly piloted by the natural newtype.

Behind him stands the machine piloted by the cyber-newtype you spoke with: white and orange, with strangely angled armor distributed evenly across its frame.

A blip appears on your HUD as the pilot of the rear machine contacts you by laser transmission.

"I'm sorry," she tells you once again.

The sudden force of the attack leaves your mind reeling... a direct psychic assault wasn't what you were expecting. You can hear yourself screaming, and you can feel your team in pain. Carya seems unaffected, though Catrina's consciousness feels weak. She probably took some of the strain off her sister so that one of them would remain at peak effectiveness. Haman on the other hand is in a bad way, as are Audrey and Rossweisse. Their emotions swing wildly from ecstasy to rage to despair.

A vague notion crosses your mind: they're fucking with you.

They made a cyber-newtype and a psychic weapon, and they used these things on you and the people you love. Ergo, they're fucking with you.

You don't like being fucked with. You've never liked being fucked with. Not since you were in school, where you used to beat up much bigger kids for fucking with you. And now you're being fucked with on a basic mental and emotional level.

You smile. Even through the pain, you smile at them. They have no idea what they just did, attacking your loved ones like this. Not just the attack itself, but DARING to use an artificial Newtype to do it. What's more, to do so by making you emotionally unstable? By bringing the worst aspects of your mind and soul out to play?

You begin to laugh. Not a happy sound, not a sound of joy. It's a laughter ringing out from deep within you, a mad cackle that you're sure can be heard from here to low orbit.

Carya seems worried about you as you laugh, but overlooks her own misgivings as it drowns out the painful waves of mental energy emanating from the building behind your rapidly advancing enemies. Audrey seems to recover slightly, as do Haman and Rosse. Not fully, you feel, but enough to fight. That's good. At least one good thing has come out of this.

Your laughter gives the purple suit reason to pause. He can hear you laughing. Good.

You want him to hear. You can feel that this man is twisted by hatred and fear, possibly to the point that he's truly beyond redemption. He's the type of man who holds no qualms about betraying his friends, using the people who love him as tools, and bringing harm to those around him for the sake of power. That's the overwhelming impression you're getting.

He's the opposite of everything you strive to be, and he's hilariously ignorant of what he's just done.

"The purple one is mine," you announce, lunging headlong into battle with another peal of laughter.

The effect on oldtypes tends to be confusion and apathy, as its main goal is to disrupt rational thinking. The unpredictable effects on Newtypes is a bug that's just now become apparent... when they accidentally turned one of the most powerful Newtypes in the setting into a laughing, muderous madman.

Which will wear off at some point on its own, just not enough to save Ein or most of their other pilots. Sera's safe.

Probably.

I'm kind of disappointed we won't get to control berserker Dom fighting the Dezpada. That's going to be an awesome fight. The Dezpada presents an interesting challenge against a Lilium-series machine. It's weapons are primarily physical so our anti-beam defenses won't do any good, and with its tentacles to attack from multiple angles and System Fafnir to help Ein multitask it should be able to keep up with us. Well, as long as we get to see it, even if we don't get to control it, I guess I'll be happy.
