You pace around the outside of the building following carelessly after Theresa and.... The guild officer.
Did you ever learn his name?
You don't think so.

And if you did, you've certainly forgotten now.

The two of them keep a leisurely pace, pointing locations around the building as they move, suggestions and counters flying.
Verbal counters, not fists or furniture.

"What about here?"
"Storage. We'd have to rearrange half the guild."
"It couldn't be that."
"You are vastly underestimating just how much supplies we keep on hand."

"How about the second floor here, then? Or is that someone's room?"
"Moving people out wouldn't be hard. People space we have. How are we going to get it up there, though?"
"Her sister was saying she built some sort of waterfall-bath-pool thing next to their tree."

He glances over his shoulder at you.
You smile and wave.

"Yeah, I can believe that."
"Mhm."

>Break into the conversation. Names would be a start.
>Ask what kind of bath they want. A bunch of small ones? a pool?
>Would showers work? Like a stone and an enchantment in a pipe or something? You really weren't a plumber.

Instead of them clearing out part of the building for us to change into a bath, it would probably be much easier to just build an extension on the outside. Any clear spaces next to the building we could use?

So, at what point do we have to give the disclaimer that we are not responsible for crushed houses and/or flooded rooms?
>>
"Have you thought about what kind of bath you want? And what your name is?"
"Maybe something like a- what?"

"I do not know your name, yes."
"You have a very strange way of asking."
"I was hoping you wouldn't notice."

Theresa watches with a permanent smirk as the officer shakes his head, sighing.
"It's Edmund."
"Edmund. Thank you, nice to meet you."
"Likewise."

"I am Lyra."
"And I am fairly certain that everyone in the town knows that already. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if every arachne who visits for the next decade finds themselves being called your name."
Nin cheers silently behind you, and you purse your lips.

"I don't- No. Nevermind, yes? The bath?"
"A bucket, usually."
"What about towns? Or cities, rather. What do they have?"
"Bigger buckets."
"How does that even work?"

"You have huge amounts of water boiling. And huge amounts of water not boiling. And you mix them in a bucket large enough-"
"Tubs, Edmund. They're called tubs."
"Thank you. They're mixed to the customer's preference. And when people aren't using them, laundry is."
"Huh."

"And yours? The waterfall bit?"
"Stone, yes."
"That sort of thing would get cold in winter. And stay cold."
"The mine is opened proper now, isn't it? Embed a few fire stones in the walls."
"Maybe."

"Or there might be a hot spring somewhere nearby that we could tap. You wouldn't have to worry about water, either. But you still haven't said what you want for your baths."
"Ah. Maybe something like two large pools? There'll be a lot of people wanting to use it at the same time, what with the workers keeping hours."

If Lyras's going to create the baths from scratch with magic, couldn't she include a vaccuum layer in the walls that functions as really damn good thermal insulation?
>>
>>38219606
>That's doable. Get them to pick a location and get started.
>Make a bath suggestion of your own. (What?)
Don't actually make this a suggestion, instead just do it.

Attempt to add a web motif to the thing. Or spikes/lips on the edges to build webs on.
Secret spider plans.
>>
>>38219606
>A bit of magic and you could try to find a spring. You might even get lucky?
I assume we're still wearing that amulet. If we happen to find a spring we can use that. If not~
>Get them to pick a location and get started.
>>
>>38219687
That's probably a lot of work. And we've got a house to build after this.
>>
>>38219606
>A bit of magic and you could try to find a spring. You might even get lucky?

A quick Geological survey of the area, see if there is anything interesting knocking around under town, then we can create the two pools, perhaps a third smaller pool which holds hotter water which can be added to the larger pools as necessary... perhaps we could encourage the creation of a small magma chamber below the smaller pool to naturally heat the water...

Accusations of flirtation between the two
>>
>>38219767
I can second accusations of flirtation.
Bonus points for insinuating they have a "thing" or are married.
>>
>>38219742
It's really not, though.
We're creating the walls as a single large block with magic.
including what essentially amounts to a bubble in the outside walls is not overly complicating things.

>>38219687
How does that work exactly? Just empty space in the walls to prevent heat transfer?
>>
>>38219891
A sealed cavity between two layers of wall make an excellent heat insulator.
>>
>>38219797
Well, good thing Lyra was an architect or an engineer in her past life.
>>
>>38219918
we were an IT professional.
>>
>>38219915

The concept is based on for thermal energy to be transferred, it must not only heat the first wall, but then the air between the two walls then the outer wall. This significantly slows the rate at which heat is lost.
>>
>>38219891
More or less?
Would probably have to makes some adjustments to keep the thing not fall apart and repair work would probably be very annoying at best, but given that we're making the whole thing with magic it's probably not optimized for non-magical maintenance anyways.

>>38219918
Right, totally forgot about that extremely arbitraty rule that makes us completely incapable of including som cavities in the wall because we have no architecture skills, but allows us to build normal houses with ease.
>>
>>38219918
If that's so, Lyra would make the best dungeons.
>>
>>38219946
I like to think that Lyra learned about the insulation qualities of air from JoJo.
>>
>>38220012
I like to think she learned about this stuff during the months she spent rebuilding the ruins.
>>
>>38219918
If we were an engineer, we would've been cheesing our way through with modern tech sooner. We haven't even made blackpowder yet.
>>
>>38220034
>during the months
The few days, if that.
>>
>>38219949
Is there a reason you are explaining this to me? That's just a more wordy version of what I already said.
>>
>>38219984
My point is that I think it's incredibly unlikely for Lyra to know about a very specific insulation technique for buildings, especially one that requires a lot of technical expertise. It's neat and all, but it's stretching the imagination: if she actually worked in the creation of, say, computer mainframes then I would concede the point and would believe that she would actually have, at minimum, passing knowledge of how vacuum insulation works.
>>
>>38220156
Anon, that's how thermal mugs work. And thermoses.
It's not exactly uncommon knowledge, I knew it since I was a small child. In fact, I was unaware people DIDN'T know it.

I just said it sounds like a bit of work, and I'm lazy.
>>
>>38220156
Maybe modern/future server rooms took advantage of vacuum insulation?

At the least, they'd have something too keep them cool.
>>
>>38220173
>>38220180
>>38220156
I thought everyone knew about thermoses. Especially wage slaves.
>>
>>38220156
It's not complicated.
It requires either high school level physics and a bit of experimentation or just seeing it being used in all the goddamn ruins she's been rebuilding.

She spent an entire timeskip on that stuff.
>>
>>38220195
99% of people will know about cavity insulation. It's a safe bet that Lyra will know about it.

A few people seem to be conflating cavity insulation with vacuum insulation, which is something few will ever encounter, but many will be vaguely aware of. But since it's not something within our means, it's a bit moot anyway.
>>
>>38220156
It really doesn't take a lot of expertise to know that air bubbles are insulating. And when you have complete control over stone, it isn't difficult to apply that knowledge either.

It's not like we are trying to manipulate every single air bubble to obtain the most optimal heat retention possible.
>>
You start rifling through your packs. You should have that crystal somewhere.
"Do you need something?"
"Magic, yes."
"I thought you could do magic?"
"Different sorts of magic. Earth and stone are one thing, and the rest is..."

You wave a hand loosely.
"Not my specialty, yes?"
"I see."

Ah. Here you are.
You pull out your little spell stone, humming warmly with mana in your hand.
You start pulling it out, letting it flow into the spell you're trying to work, reaching out into the earth.

You keep yourself amused, though.
"Are you married?"

"Hah? No, no, I'm- You're a little young to be asking."
"Ah. I meant to Theresa, yes?"

If only they'd been drinking. A spit-take would have been a lovely contribution to the whole scene.
As it is, they both choke, stumbling over words as they try to deny it all at once.
"No."
"No!"
"Absolutely not."
"No."

You raise one hand in submission to the blushing not-couple, the other involved in your spellwork.
"My apologies, yes."
The merchant sputters as she tries to pull herself back together.
"Why would you even think that?"

"You argue like an old couple, yes."

You ignore the distraught denials from both of them, and send your magic forth, blossoming into a spell in your eyes.

Okay, that makes more sense than using vacuum insulation, and more plausible for Lyra to have figured it out by looking at architecture: apparently it was developed by the Greeks and expanded by the Romans.

So, suggestions/predictions for possible monster races we could come across:

Stuff we might run into that's been mentioned:
> The Naga - I thought we might come across them in the desert. They've already been mentioned, but I figured I'd throw them in. (Requesting sexy mysterious arab naga for Lyra's first male crush. Get that Nin jealousy going. We'll return to her anyway.)
> Merpeople - Already been mentioned. Won't be able to collect one, unless we tug around a giant fishbowl.
> Minotaurs - Also mentioned. Cute, simple-minded cow girls inevitable.
> Centaurs - We've run into one. Another butt for our growing group of friends would be neat.

Feel free to tell me of more if I missed them, I read through the pastebin but it was a cursory glance.

Suggestions next post
>>
>>38220712
our first rolls were better, thankfully.

>>38220613
suggest they should maybe try the marriage thing. It might fit them.
>>
>>38220739
Suggestions for the future:
> Contruct(s) - Figured we might run across one in some wizard's dungeon or something. Super strong, no need for eating or sleeping, the usual stuff. Dunno how they would evolve, but maybe they could get elemental aptitudes or something. And I'm takling about actual sapient constructs, not the golems we ran into before.
> Mouse-people - That or the next one.
> Mantis-people - Figured there had to be some plains somewhere. I'd think either mouse or mantis dudes and dudettes would live in areas with really high grasses, enough to hide them standing up. I figure they would be really short. And adorable. Requesting ninja mantises with bladed forearms.
> Lizard-people - Self-explanatory, probably living in swamps or jungles. If jungles, requesting amazonian lizard-women.
> Oomukade - People with human torsos and up, probably antennae, venom, shit like that. The rest of their body is like a centipede, the ones that live in the rainforest. Not the ones with teeny feetses, the ones that eat taratulae for breakfast. I'd think they wouldn't see very well, look around by touch.
> Kraken - Top half human, lower half tentacles. I'd think they would've preyed on mermaids back in the day (And might still).
> Dryads - Self explanatory. Maybe not the attached to home tree kind. Or maybe so. It'd be funny to see Lyra carrying around a little sapling in a pot.
> Yeti - Lives in the mountains. Lots of furry bits, warm, tall. Loves hugs.
> Bear-people - Lives in piney woods and shit. Option of having them obsess over honey left up to QM.
> Manticore - Wings, spiky tail, claws. It's up to the QM to really include these, I'd be fine with them being an evil lion with a human face like they are now. But spiky cuddles would be interesting.
>>

goddamnit stop making me chortle about lyra crushing on some snake guy pissing off both nin and esmerelda. It's too good and it might never happen.

Personally, I'll make suggestion for actual monsters we can fight rather than monster folk, but I'll wait on those suggestions until we're in a new area, like plains, mountains, desert, tropical jungle, ect...

I think I've already made a few throughout this quest.
>>
>>38220987
>>38221004
I'd figured the minotaur would be the one putting it in Lyra's hair, but after some begging Lyra would probably return the favor. Thus making her friends jealous then.

You whisper, and the earth whispers back-
Stone and fire and dirt sing as you open your ears.

There is water below, swirling through the stone, hissing with a heat born far below.
Curving its course to your will won't be easy, but it is doable.

You yank yourself out of the spell before you drift off listening to lullabies from molten stone. It feels warm and welcoming, but you've got a schedule to keep.

You nod to yourself, and interrupt the two from their blushing reveries.
"There is a spring, yes. So you can work your plans around that."
"Oh, well, that will be nice-"
"Yeah, we can- Oh, sorry."
"It's fine, go ahead-"
"No, ladies first-"

You cough into your hand as Nin giggles.
Did they just... not realize? And now they're thinking about it?
"Have you picked a location? Is there anything special you'd like?"
"Oh, uh-"
"Um-"

Cough. Cough.
"If we have a spring, then... Maybe something beneath the guild?"
"Beneath?"
"It would keep the whole building warm. And the second floor wouldn't work anyway- adventurers are always sleeping at odd hours, they don't need a parade of people tramping down the halls."
"Mhm."

"What about the training hall?

"Should I start from there, then? Or do you want to make a separate set of stairs for it?"
"Either should work."

Suggestanon here

Enemy monsters suggestions:

> 'Groar the Terrible' - a great spirit bear who's heard of our exploits defeating his comrades. Twice the size of the bear in the circle. Has two heads, bears for hands, bears for feet, and his tongue has teeth. Requests calmly that we stop killing his 'widdle bitty babies, yes you are, yes you are...'.
> Goblins that are actually frogs. Elastic tongue, jumpy, all of it. Evolve into salamander/frog trolls. Other option is to make goblins appear to be tadpole-like and trolls like toads or frogs or something.
> Distasteful tree mates that look like trees from a distance but once you get close they smack you with ilmby arms. Evolutions make their bark thicker andmake
em look like different types of trees.
> Lil' boar dudes. Short, but hardy. Evolve into piggy ogres.
> Vampy bat-people. Don't burn straight up in light, but eyes are super sensitive to light and ears really sensitive to sound. Allergy to garlic optional. Implementing lisp mandatory.
> Fairies. Bad, bad fairies.

I've always thought that fey should be some of the badest of the bad. Ancient magic, all of them being from a place no person from ours can understand. Being kidnapped by fairy queen is optional. Smacking queen once met because of her snark and insults to friends mandatory.

Everything that lives through magic, we can take out without any problem, yes.
>>
To start, of course-
You replace the dirt beneath the guild with stone, severing the logs pounded through the earth below. Your acquaintances watch, side by side as a wide rectangle pushes through the floor and molds itself against a wall.

And then the insides simple flow away, and a staircase begins to from, spiraling down and into the area below.

The lone adventurer in the bar sets his fork down, and takes a long drink.
You follow your new steps into the heart of your latest act of architecture.

The area before the stairs is left wide- and the wall next to them punches backwards, breaching the training grounds right next to it's own staircase, allowing the adventures an easy passage to the latest of the guild's facilities.

The room's blank wall opens into a pair of doorways, stone shifting and moving, leaving behind a set of long benches and some open faced lockers. And past that, massive rooms open, with deepening pools- yet empty, but not for long.

You focus again on the water below- not that it will answer you, but you keep it's position in mind.
And the earth shifts for you, forcing a new path for it to diverge through, channelling it up through the stone- and through a series of plain spigots, spewing steaming water into the waiting pool.
Simple grates will keep it moving.
Though they'll likely need to be cleaned.

Not your problem though.

You could leave it like this. Blank, already filling with steam and warmth. It's all they need, really.
But your imagination is already running wild. Designs and etching and-
It isn't carving or drawing. The stone will make what you see in your mind. So as long as you can see it...
>>
>>38222975
A gesture sets pillars forming- then spreading. Rough stone bark ripples cross their surface and branches spread over the ceiling, stone leaves set above. Seats form across the lip in the pool, tiles raise from the ground.
You even add a bit of your own twist to them, a raised etching of a web running throughout the pool.

How long will it take them to discover that, you wonder?

Between the trees, plain tiles for the walls, and the edges shift, forming a new pattern- one with each monster of the forest, one after another, repeating as it wraps around the hall.
The guild symbol emblazons itself on a wall as wings spread around it.
Spigots take a life of their own, each the head of a forest beast, water running through stone jaws into the pool.

It takes you longer than you'd think, and you stagger from the baths an hour later, head pounding with rebellion.
You could have stopped, but it was just fun-
hiding little spider patterns in the trees, decorating the door frames-

You blink against the suns glare as you come up from below.
They'll need lights, too.

I kind of want to get Lyra a pet, something she can legitimately tame and such for a pet. Not like her friends, but a real pet.

>>

Your benefactors look up as you stagger your way out of the stairway you built.
Edmund blinks in surprise.

"Lyra? Are you finished already?"
You look over towards them, eyes squinting, against the light and your even more brilliant headache.
Are they holding hands?
Gods, people.

"Yes, yes. You will need lights. And doors, yes."
"Those aren't a problem. Are you okay?"
And now he's standing up. He's not even going to let of her hand, is he?
"Too much magic, yes? I am going to lie down."

"Ah, the rooms here-"
"At Lia's. I should let my sister know where I am, at least."
"Visit when you wake, then. Doors and lights won't take long."
"Mhm. You two have fun, yes?"

They blush hard, yanking their hands apart as you push your way into the street, moth giggles accompanying your every move.

You bumble through the village, muttering to yourself about blindness and adults till you come to Jin's home.
You knock, wait the half second for the answer, and head inside.
"Lyra, good afternoon."
"What took so long."
"Nnnafternoon. I got carried away, yes. Can I sleep?"

"Taking after my daughter, finally?"
"M'head hurts. Magic."
"Feel free to lay down, yes?"
"Mhm."

You manage to grunt your thanks as you faceplant into the bedding, squeezing your eyes tight and willing yourself to stop being conscious.
It doesn't take long.

But yes, it's sad we don't know any day to day preferences they may have.

They must have some form of communication apart from fireworks. They share a common culture and society, and their part of the forest is covered in canopy highway system of webs. The main reason they stay apart is so as to not put excessive strain on the local ecosystem with their super-carnivorous appetites.

Perhaps we should create some kind of arachne festival once a year at the ruins to touch base with their fellows. And serve as an organizational step towards a monarchy.

This is a new and strange thing. I think I like it.

Fully support meeting another arachne. Any arachne. I just want to meet another member of our own race outside of our family. Leaving home without even meeting one feels like we would be missing out on something fairly fundamental.
>>
>>38225338

I'm against the idea because all it will amount to is searching for a husbando or a qt3.14 arachne girl instead of actually learning new things about arachne.

At which point you're just being disruptive and limiting our options to forest only, no friends.

I can understand their resistance to the idea, because it was originally framed with a "I want to meet a sexy spiderbutt boy" strapped to it.

Everyone, everyone pls, stop. Just stop.

I think we've all been following these threads to know introducing the subject of waifus/husbandos in this quest before any are actually introduced to know absolutely nothing will come of it. Even mentioning it with the intent of making a constructive contribution to the discussion will inevitably bring about a shitstorm. Such is the nature of 4chan.

Let's just get back to spiderbutt shenanigans, I beg of you all.
>>
>>38225521
I think they're just trying to start shit because they saw window dressing they don't like.
Either way, let it be done and dead. It's a fun idea, one that we should probably do, which is no more likely to result in waifu shit than literally any course that involves people.
>>
>>38225466
It wasn't so bad until two threads ago. Before that, things seemed alright on that end. Don't know where it suddenly came from, but it'll probably deflate like last time.
At least until some assholes re-escalate it again later down the line.

>>38225521
It may have started off like that, but the conversation has since moved on. They are clearly the faggots most obsessed with waifus/husbandos.

While everyone else is suggesting exploring the forest and meeting new arachne, they are the ones clinging onto the original post about sexy spider boys.

We're not talking about that. There's like 2 faggots (I suspect you are one of them) clinging onto the subject while everyone else is talking about meeting other arachne and learning about our race and culture.
>>
>>38225643
No one's upset with you. We're upset at people who use it for waifuing/husbandoing purposes.
Platonic beefcakes tend to be great in my experience.
>>
>>38225707
Anyway, we really should find out when that candlelight get together is and make SURE we get here.

We can't miss that shit. It's a get together. AND they'll see how we opened the ruins.
>>
It's nice and warm.
But it could be nicer. And warmer.
And you now where the bath is.

You rub your eyes as you pick yourself up, shedding blankets and monsters alike.
You have to pick the latter up again though.
Elle gives you a sleepy gaze as you whisper where you're going, then promptly falls back asleep.

You drag your monster pile down the street- Nin half out of the skull-cubby arms and legs askew, Jin, the ever compact harpy and Sheszka, the incredible liquid dog.
Wolf, whatever.

Dog is probably an insult for them.

You wouldn't have to crack a dog with a right to get them to follow you though.

You dismiss your ever more inane thoughts as you shove through the doors and into the guild.
They do work fast.

There's a pair of double doors already marking the staircase- though you get a nod from the bartender, and go right though.
Orbs of light mark the wall every few feet- You can make out the little enchantments beneath them, and even recognize them.
And at the bottom-

There's a set of doors before each change room, marked with the plainspeech letters for male and female, respectively. There's even forest language beneath that. Very nice.
>>
>>38225682
What do you have against Nin?
>>
>>38225763
You enter the appropriate chamber, and immediately set about shedding clothing and undressing your friends. Everything is shoved into a slot in the 'lockers', bundled together because you are lazy and want a bath.

And then you enter the final chamber.

Despite the size, it's relatively full- women of all shapes and sizes relaxing in the water already. Steam hangs thick in the air- and a moments though creates a series of vents to let it gradually escape.

You clatter forward over the stones- accompanied by a now groggy Sheszka.
As you dip your foremost leg into the water...

Nearly every head in the bath turn to face you.
And one by one, they start to applaud.

You face burns as you shuffle into the deeper sections, hiding your features beneath a curtain of hair, surrounded by a tune of 'Thank you'.
Stop staring stop staring.

You distract yourself by washing your friends, and the clapping gradually dies.
Thank gods.

And double thanks that Nin slept through it.
>>
>>38225682
Those two don't seem to be arguing with anyone dude. Please don't escalate things.
>>
>>38225782

Mom likes the colour of Dad's hair.
Dad likes red.
Elle prefers a pale white to a pale blue.
Aria has a favourite gem, but she won't say.
Sara likes dark, dark blue or purple
Zach likes green, though lighter than the leaves.
Ephram likes blood red.

You are a resounding 12 popularity! +15 for being awesome at everything
-3 for being a giant spider (due to centaur)

1) Lightning wolves don't get that small. There are a variety of dog breeds, though.
2) You'd need someone to tame it. Or to get your hands on an egg, maybe.
3) If you want.
