Thankfully enough, a bath isn't much of a place for applause.
It dies down as people return to washing, cleaning, relaxing.
And the flush of embarrassment is gradually replaced by one born of hot water, and the struggle to wash sleeping monsters.

You made a little bowl of stone when noone was watching, filling it with the water of the spring- and depositing your resident necksnake into it. Ezzy immediately coiled herself up, a quiet sigh of relief set free as she dozes in the shallow water.

Nin comes to when you start to dunk her, combing out her hair as her antennae come to life. Each twitches in place as she turns this way and that, trying to figure out where she is now.
Sheszka floats gently in the water, legs kicking just enough to keep her momentum going as she circles the bath.
And Jin, like the harpy she is- and like several other harpies in the bath- flaps and twists and sprays water in every direction as she cleans herself.

She's awake though.
Little blessings, right?

You settle in for a soak, letting the heat soothe your body.
You deserve this.

You are pleased to find that the guild's attention to detail extends to towels.

Which is good, because you didn't bring one.
You probably could have woven your own, but that takes time. And effort.
You don't put forth effort when you're relaxing. You put forth effort before you relax, so you can relax better.

That's how it works.

Sheszka shakes herself somewhat dry, drenching Nin again. And anyone else nearby.
There's a second round of drying while the wolf sits and waits for you.

And then it's upstairs, following your nose to lands unknown!

It isn't actually unknown. It's meat. You're going to eat it now.

You move a bench aside, taking a seat at an empty table. Orders are placed.
Nin discovers they have some sort of plant things for her to eat. She seems very pleased.
You ask for all the meat in the kitchen. The server refuses, and you grudgingly change your order to 'an entire animal'.

The room fills as you await your meal- Adventurers waking up and looking for breakfast, or just free from training. People still red from the heat of the bath, or just stepping in to get some food before they head out for a day of work.

Even Lann stumbles her way down the stairs, seating herself opposite you- and starting a rush to fill out the rest of your table with adventurers.
Their requests for stories fade out as your meal is delivered- a pig you can nearly hide behind.
And the silence remains as you demolish it, moving section to section and leaving nothing but bones.
Which Sheszka happily steals.

You eaten away enough of the breakfast sacrifice to see Lann again when she speaks up, a spoon hovering in her hand between a bowl of something approaching oatmeal and her face, concealed behind a mess of hair.

"See- Your mouth is moving. And words are coming out. But they feel completely devoid of meaning. Truth itself has abandoned our speech. There is nothing there."
"That was very eloquent. And slightly hurtful."

"What? You were just talking about Ed- Where does the demon merchant come in?"

"Yes."

"And where do you get involved, then?"
"Why do you think I was involved?"
"You're always involved. If there was a dragon attacking the town, right now, I would be looking for you. To find out why."
You gesture helplessness, innocence.

There's laughter around you, but you don't think anyone bought it.
"I may have been involved."
"May."
"I might have put the plan into action. Mostly by myself."
"What did you do, Lyra."
"I built a bath."

She leans back, blinking.
"What?"

"Well, the bath warms itself. And is large enough for most of the town, probably."

You start to stand, clicking your tongue gently in disappointment.
"Lann, I think this has gone far enough, yes? Your jealousy is unsightly."
"My what- I'm not jealous of-"

You reach easily over the table, muffling your friend's complaints with one finger.
"I understand, yes? You didn't get elf fangs or elf poison, and you try to hide it with things like this. It is okay, Lann. Noone will hold your shortcomings against you."
The muddled angry elf noises acquire an upturn in volume, and you pull her from her seat and into a hug.

"Maybe it is just an elf thing, yes? They live longer. Your fangs might still grow in!"
You pull away, leading your friends towards the door as she shouts after you.
"Lyra!"
"The bath is downstairs, yes!"
"LYRA!"

And you're out the door, giggling your way down the street.

Elle is awake by the time you return to the cabin, chatting amicably with Lia about clothing for people with arm-wings.
She has something of a one track mind.
"Good morning!"
"Lyra, good morning."
"Still busy, dear?"

"Always, yes. Elle can live here, right?"
"The house might be a bit small-"
"Haha. That was a fake laugh."
"Mhm. It's fine. I will vouch for her."

"Then it is house time. Did you think about what you wanted?"
"A nest. And a bath."
"The village is short on giant trees, Elle."
She shrugs.
"And there is a giant bath under the guild now."

"That was rather sudden."

Should be a 'relatively' normal house. A big part of living in the village is about getting used to all the human stuff that she'd have to deal with in the city.

We can still make it swanky. Three stories, with a nice large terrace. Lots of rooms and a private bath. But an otherwise normal human building. With wall and rooms and all that jazz. She needs to get used to that stuff.

Should also have a shop front ion the ground floor. Some sandbending plus fire should give us a nice shop front window.

Elle trails off about some sort of super-tree, and you wind up ignoring her as you walk.
You are here to learn about people and how to live with them, Elle.
Building a giant tree is not conducive to preparing yourself to live in a city.
At all.

Of course, keeping your sister happy and healthy does have it's benefits.
But she can't have a store up a tree.
Agh.

In the end, what sprouts from the grounds near Lia's cabin draws more then it's share of watchers.
A stone tree- Though nowhere near the height your sister seems to want, but that's not going to happen anyway- twists, sitting at an angle away from a multi-level home.
A storefront sort of look to the downstairs, and a few rooms upstairs. For whatever she wants.
A personal bath, some extra branches for local harpies- ANd she can weave her own damn nest, thank you.

There's a door on the rooftop, so she can get up to the tree without having to walk behind her home.
A bit of chatter with the crowd is all it takes to secure the rest of what she'll need- A few carpenters will see to giveing her floors and walls within the stone shell, as well as any furniture she might want.
Elle is busy muttering about lace, so you do negotiations.

You busy yourself with a bit of decorating while your sister head upwards, already laying silk lines between the stone branches.
She'll need a lot more than just that, though.

You keep yourself amused by turning the tree trunk on the inside into part of the bath, sculpting stone with rings like it was wood. Branches marking the ceiling. Carefully cut portals for the windows- they'll need to be installed with wooden frames. Maybe two layers of glass, to keep in the warmth.

All in all, your sister has what essentially amounts to a mansion, especially within the small community.
Spider-ly extravagance.
>>
>>38272848
Well, they did give you permission.
And really, it's only half a mansion. Twenty-five percent. You can't count the tree unless you're arachne yourself.

By the time you've finished the sun is low in the sky, and you're starting to feel the creeping sense of drain from using your power.
Not the smashing headache of moving an underground spring, thank gods, but enough that you are really looking to lie down for a while.
Like, twelve hours sounds good.

Elle is still busy overhead, walking upside down across branches as the grey brown rock vanishes under layers of silk.
It's not really ready to sleep in, just yet. And she'll probably need food before it's done.

"Elle!"
You wince a little at your own voice.
"Yes?"
"You can eat at the inn or the guild, yes. Or you can hunt, if you feel like it."
"You're done?"
"I need sleep. And the rest will be wood and glass- Other people will take care of it."

She clatters down the curved trunk, stopping short in front of you and wrapping you in a tight hug.
Elle tight, not Mom or Aria tight.
"Thank you, yes."
"Mmm. Even if you have dumb ideas about houses."
"Nests are not dumb."
"They are in cities, yes. Make sure you spend time below, and get used to walls. There won't be any giant trees in a city."
"And what if there are?"
"Then they won't let you live in them, silly weaver."
"Hmph."

>The inn maybe? Lia's cabin isn't like your nest. You don't want to bother her too much.

This is a fair idea, but is there any bedding or webbing to sleep on?

If so, I support it. If not, then shit.

Gotta make use of all that bother lann time while we're here.
Not like she's going with us on adventure or back to visit our family.
>>
>>38273230
We have to make sure that we bother her enough that she is still bothered when we next visit. We don't know when we'll be back, so obtaining peak bother is important. Wouldn't want her to stop feeling irritated a week after we leave or anything.
>>
>>38273230
Don't tempt us with a new title we might want, QM
>>
>>38273597
The list needs updating anyway. After the Wendigo, and the Hydra and acquiring a Lamia for fellowship.
>>

I'm still waiting for the title monster tamer seeing how many we have using us as there own bed
>>
>>38273597
We won't truly earn the title until we bother our grandmother to apoplexy. Lann is only half credit.

>over half the guild

Anon, the entire town and possible some visitors will have gone though those baths today. It's going to be more than a few guild members.

On the plus side, healing powder will have got mixed in too. Should help a few people out.
>>
Your sister waves as you leave, tromping back into town towards the guild, followed by a small parade of monsters.
Sometimes, you feel like a conductor.

The guild is even busier now- A steady stream of workers flowing up and down the stairs into the baths.
You take the other set of stairs.
No, not the ones to the training grounds. The third set. Upstairs.
To the upstairs. All stairs go up. And down.

Anyway, you knock on Lann's door.

"Yes?"
"May I come in?"
"I spent the afternoon being comforted about my lack of venom."
"Is that a yes, then?"

Lann opens the door, looking somewhat torn being irritated and more irritated.
"Give me one good reason to let you in. One."
"The bath was good, yes?"
She smiles, just a little.
"Better than your, yeah."

You snort.
"Ridiculous. My bath is an experience, yes? High above the ground, a tree amidst an ancient forest, water cascading gently and flowing. My bath is perfection."
"I'm sure. I liked the spiders, though. Nice touch."
"The tiles are web, too."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"How hard was it to hold that back?"
"I have been smiling about it since yesterday, yes."

"Well, all that's nice, but I don't see a reason to let you in."
"Hmm. You didn't get me drunk this time, so there is an almost ignorable chance of you being crushed."
She mouths the words, following the sentence along.
"I... am entirely certain that you just told me there is a chance I'll be crushed."
"I am a giant spider, yes? It is a constant risk."

She rolls her eyes and pushes the doors open, stepping back into her room with a yawn.
Sheszka echoes it, and crawls onto the bed after her, curling up at the end and starting to snore.

"I'm honestly jealous."
"Fangs aren't all that great. Biting isn't something you want to do against giant monsters anyway."
"No, you- The way everyone falls asleep so easily."
"Oh. Just get tired, yes?"
>>
>>38274357
Nin giggles and Lann throws her a look.
"How old are you supposed to be, anyway?"
She laughs harder.
You give her a shake, mussing her hair.

"Nin is younger than me, yes. And so is Jin, but by less. Esmerelda is a year or so? And Sheszka is- Huh."
"What?"
"I don't know how old Sheszka is."

You prod the lithe wolf till she uncurls, rolling onto her back in a pose entirely reminiscent of much smaller canines.
"Sheszka."
"Mmm."
"How old are you, yes?"
"'Moons. Yes."
"What?"
"Twelve moons."
"A year, then? Just younger than Ezzy."

You scratch behind her ears till her eyes slide closed again, though she doesn't return to her prior sleeping position.
Nin shuts the door behind you, pulling free a few blankets from your shell, and you make yourself comfortable as best you can as the light fades.
"Good night, yes."
"'Night."

Somethings is pounding. Noise. Bangbangbang.
Your eyes open groggily, and you push yourself up onto your elbows, your head roving around for the source.

Door. It's the door. You don't have a door?
You live in a nest. In a tree.
No doors.

A dream, then?

You struggle to your feet, shedding monsters and blankets, ignoring their complaints.
Shut up, door.
Thud thud thud-

You pull it open.
"Lann! You need to- GODS-"
No, you're Lyra. Stupid door.
"Uh- uh- uh-"

You let out a little hiss, rubbing at your eyes, pulling your hair out of your face.
"Not Lann. 'M Lyra."
"Uh. Yes. Miss. Is Lann here?"
You stare at the messenger a moment, blinking slowly before you turn around.
Sheszka. Nin. You can feel Ezzy's scales at your throat. Jin is in her cubby. There's Lann. Right in her bed.
Bed.
>>
>>38274381

Room! You're in Lann's room. At the guild. In town.
You wake in leaps and bounds, synapses firing as you recall where you are.
Careful steps over your friends sees you to Lann's side, and you shake the half-elf into some semblance of awareness.
"Wha-"
"Lann. Someone is here, yes? Knocking and scared."
"Of you?"
You consider it a moment.
"Maybe?"
"I'm up, I'm up-"

She swings her legs over the side of her bed, standing all at once and heading for the doorway.
You lift her clear of your friends and plant her right where she needs to be.
"Mmm. Thanks."
"Yes."

She steps into the hall in her pyjamas, and you can hear murmuring, growing louder from beyond the portal.
The door swings back open a great deal faster than it swung shut.
"Lyra. There's a problem."
"A problem?"
"A 'get your armour and spear problem'."

A cliff hanger?! Damn you, you evil Canadian Spider.

Although..... Whatever problem this is, it'll be expecting a sleepy little village full of humans and harpies.

They (if the problem is a 'they') are going to shit themselves when they get a load of us!

This is going to be hilarious.

I'm thinking it'll be a new threat, either monsters or just regular people being idiots.

Excluding Lann and and Ezzy, Sheszka is older than all the room's occupants combined! Daaang. She's the big sister to EVERYONE, now!

and then I remember she spent her childhood in starvation conditions and am very sad
>>
>>38276214
She had tough times. Wait, ezzy's a year old. Shezka's a year old. Who's year is bigger?
>>
>>38276299
Ezzy's. Shezka is a year, Ezzy is a year and some.
