Last time, you got drunk with your brother and talked about your father, met the madman Dag'ny as per Queen Rozalina's instructions, and discovered a line of Brisgavi women tied up and being dragged by slavers towards the city of the Chatti tribe.

You are currently in the process of murdering these slavers.

>3 rounds of RAGE mode remaining

--------------------------------------------------
As you call out to him, the slaver turns towards you.

You respond by hurling the axe at your feet into his chest.

He stumbles back, shocked, and you're already on him. You kick the head of the axe deeper into his chest. The handle shatters under your foot and the slaver falls onto his back.

You are on top him with a handful of dirt. "Hey there!" Your voice is cheery and your smile is wide. Blood runs down his chest, oh the beautiful blood...

"I bet you're worn out from excorting all those fine ladies, right? I assume that someone from such a noble birth as yours was nothing but the upmost proper in your conduct with them. You must be hungry!" You rest a finger on your chin and look up. Our of the corner of your eye, you see Ema engaging with a nearby bandit. Looks like she's protecting you. In the distance you hear Oskar's roar and see a spray of blood arch through the air. "Ahh, so beautiful!"

You look back down at your next victim. The terror in his eyes is just so delicious!

"To thank you for protecting those pure and untouched Brisgavi women, I am going to feed you my special recipe!"

You drop your shield and hold open his jaw. You then plunge the dirt in your hand down his gullet.

His eyes widen in panic as you stuff more dirt down. "Now, isn't that good? A meal fit for the Emperor, if I say so myself!"

> [Cont.]
>>
>>38294854
The man begins to sputter and cough violently. You stop feeding him and your expression turns sad. "... You.. You don't like it? But that was my grandmama's family recipe.."

You supress a sniffle, grabbing the broken handle at your side.

"It looks like I will have to give you your dessert, then." You stab the handle into the dirt pile in his mouth. You pull, slowly wrenching his jaw off of his skull.

He silently screams. You only look heartbroken. "You didn't like my meal. You are mean. Mean people deserve to be punished."

You pull one final time and you watch as his cheeks tear and his jaw becomes unhinged. Blood oozes around and into the dirt, pouring down the sides of his face. The man's eyes roll back into his head as he grows silent from the pain.

You stand up, leaving him to bleed to death.

>>
Rolled 31, 77, 28 = 136 (3d100)

The dual shield guy sees Oskar bullrush another bandit into a tree and rushes in to help. You will take care of him later.

Ema is currently blocking, dodging, and weaving around the wild slashes of the two slavers that are targeting her. One is wielding an axe with a second head built into the handle below the first one, while the other isn't using anything interesting. The axe gives you an idea.

Sprinting towards the nearest tree, you run a couple steps up the trunk.

"Ema, duck!"

Ema immediately disengages from her targets and rolls out of the way. As she does so, you launch yourself through the air by kicking off the tree and extending your shield. You collide with the first slaver and watch in sick fascination as his head bashes into the other's face. The three of you collapse onto the ground in a pile.

You grab the double axe head wielding soldier by the hair and lift him up above the other slaver.

"You know, they say that two heads are better than one!" You slam the slaver's head into the other's face.

"Look, it seems that we're headed in the right direction!" You lift the head up and slam it down once more, blood lightly spraying out.

"I've been thinking about what I would need to do to get ahead of the competition!" Slam.

You pause for a moment, grinding the slaver's faces together as they flail wildly. Shuddering, you realize what you have been saying and spit on the ground in disgust.

Silent, you don't stop slamming until you feel the skull shatter in your hand.

Standing, you see that Oskar and Ema are both doing battle with the man with two shields. Berengar is prowling in the bushes behind him.

Spear throw it is, writing.
>>
Sprinting around the battle, you unsheath a second spear. You watch as the shield man expertly blocks both Ema's and Oskar's attacks, using his full body shields as bashing weapons every time one of them oversteps or holds back too much. Oskar's axe seems to be doing nothing more than scraping the wood as he gets smacked repeatedly by the shield. Ema is shield-locked with the other one.

As you swing around behind him, you ready your spear and focus at his heart. One throw should be enough to take him out, you arch back and throw.

You watch the spear twirl, its arc perfect, and you can feel the gods singing as it flies.

The singing stops when you see Oskar stumble away, dazed. You watch in horror as the shield man rushes your brother after skirting around Ema. In that moment your spear hits, but instead of his heart it stabs into his left shoulder. The wound doesn't stop him as he bullrushes Oskar, lifting him up and running 20 paces before ramming him into a tree.

You are running after him. You see Oskar drop his axe as he is slammed into the tree once more. Flinging yourself through the air, you land on the man's back and slam the hilt of your sword into his head wildly.

The shield bearer backs away from Oskar and drops his shields, reaches up to grab you by the scruff of your armor, and bodily throws you over his head. You spin and tumble over the ground, dropping your shield and gladius.

You stop tumbling and sit up, glaring at the shield guy. He wrenches your spear out of his back and snaps it over his knee. He gives you a blood chilling smile similar to the one you gave the man you fed dirt. He picks up his shields again and seems to operate a mechanism. Hundreds of spear heads of various sizes and lengths extend from the face of the shield. He holds them in front of him in the form of a wall. He isn't slow with those shields either, you've seen him parry Ema's fastest blows.

> [Cont.]
>>
>>38296766
He scoffs at you, issuing you a challenge with the evil glint in his eye. Your frozen blood churns. This dog has no right to scoff at you! You break through your shields with your bare hands and shove those spearheads down his throat one by one!

You maintain eye contact with him as you stand. You ball your hands into fists. You ready yourself for a countercharge, eyes lock with his as mad glee is exchanged.

He charges you.

You blink, shaking your self internally. Your frozen blood begins to flow normally again, and you can hear the sounds of the forest around you. You hear the pounding feet of the shield man as he charges. Sprinting towards him, you bend down to pick up your gladius and increase your speed to maximum.

The shield guy seems to be favoring his right side, the spear wound you gave him obviously making holding the shield in his left arm difficult. He lets out a roar you approach, thrusting out his shields as you get close enough.

You sidestep around him and get on his right side, bringing your gladius down in the split second opening you gave yourself. The blade cleaves through the man's elbow perfectly and you watch as the shield and his lower arm tumbles to the ground.

The man runs 15 more paces before he notices you are not currently skewered on his shield. He turns to you, blood pouring out of his arm. He glares at you, mad hate oozing from him as he charges across the field towards you once more. You stand still this time, waiting to step aside at the last second.

You hear the whoosh of something flying through the air.

You see the man's head recoil to the side.

The man continues to run until he reaches you. His body fails as it realizes it is dead, stumbling and collapsing at your feet.

Ema skips out of the woods to your left, wrapping up her sling. "Hey Cen, looks like we got all of them. Do you want me to check on Oskar, or go to the women?"

"Go ahead to the women Ema, and take Berenger with you." You pick up your shield and make sure its strapped on properly.

She nods and trots off, Berengar walking beside her. He seems to have recovered from the kick to his torso.

Stifled moans of pain and the sounds of a crawling person pinpoint the man you hit with your spear. He seems to have been trying to crawl to safety during the chaos of the battle. You approach him, wrench your spear out of his leg, and pierce it through his other one. You make sure he's adequately pinned to the ground before you turn and return to Oskar. You remember the first bandit that you knocked out earlier and you check on him to see he's still unconscious. Good.

You walk up to Oskar and see that he's slowly standing up, hand wrapped around his side while the other is holding himself up against the tree. You move in and try to help him up the rest of the way, but he waves you off.

"I'm fine Cen, the bastard just got a lucky shot in. Who the devil goes into battle with two shields, anyway?"

"He had money from somewhere Oskar, those shields had spear heads hidden along the face. If he had charged you with those out..." You trail off.

"So he was a sneaky son of a whore? Aye, I'm glad you got 'em then."

Oskar is standing up straight now. It seems that he is mostly okay, but you think it would be a good idea for him to get some rest before diving into any more battles like that one.

"Hello hello, there's a poor soul here! I wonder why his eyes are bigger than a scared deer?" You see Dag'ny standing above the man you stabbed with the spear, poking his face with his gnarled branch.

"Oi, you crazy bastard, leave m-" Dag'ny smacks him across the mouth, hard.

"Oh no, oh no, why would you insult your mother's pride? You continue like that and I might just skin your hide!" Dag'ny giggles and squees.

It looks like the slaver has Dag'ny occupied. You wouldn't wish his insanity on anyone.

You did just stab the man, but you realized that he isn't much use to you if he bleeds to death. Dead men tell no tales. "Oskar, grab the sleeping slaver over there and bring them to Dag'ny. We have some interrogating to do."

Oskar grins at you before walking off. After tearing off the cleanest tunics from one of the slavers, you approach the man and tie strips of cloth at his upper thigh. "I suggest you keep those tight, or you will bleed to death. No German should die such a pitiful death."

The man stares at you, confused. "Uhm.. Thank y-"

"Oh look, CenCen showed the lamb mercy before the end! Is there nothing more that he will bend?"

Dag'ny giggles again before he becomes intensely focused on his branch, tracing the grooves in the wood with his finger. You really are not sure what is wrong with him.

Oskar returns with the other man and plops him down next to the other slaver. They both stare at you.

You stare at them back.

A beat passes.

The bleeding man cracks first. "We were just delivering the women, I didn't touch them I swear!"

You focus on him. "Who was the buyer?"

"I don't know! I was just told we were supposed to deliver the women to Chatti and collect our payment."

The other slaver is staring at his comrade in shock. He didn't see how throughly you slaughtered the rest of his troop, you realize, so he isn't as intimidated of you.

You also notice there's something.. Different about him. He looks too clean.

"Is there anything you would like to add?"

He glare back at you, silent. A determined one, you see. This man is made of sterner stuff than the rest.

You may have to convince him to open his mouth.

Other baddies I should remind you about:

The tribe who attacked your village is the Chausci tribe, where Hermann is one of their best generals. One of the soldiers pointed to him as being the one who ordered the attack. Hermann is also a Roman Auxiliary and commands troops in one of legions.

The other soldiers you encountered in your village claimed that Gunther Guntherson, also of the top generals of the Chausci tribe, ordered the burning of your village. He is currently on his way home with his army of 25,000.

These are the leads you have right now, but these bandits might know of some smaller fry.

You sit down level with him as you take out some bread from your pack. After tearing off two pieces, you tear off two slices and offer it to them. The bleeding man takes it desperately and eats it in a couple of bites. The other continues to glare at you, ignoring the bread. You nod in respect.

"As I thought, your pride is strong. You are not of low honor, such as those you surround yourself with."

You place the bread back in your bag.

"You have the air of someone with strong blood. Why you would participate in such a dishonorable act, forcing my people into bondage..." As you shake your head, the man's shoulders before tense and a flicker of surprise flashes across his eyes.

"It is beyond me, to be honest. I would not wish to see someone as strong as you fall to the depths these animals have cast themselves into."

The bleeding soldier looks at you indignantly. "By the gods, who are you calling an-"

Dag'ny silences him with a deft strike from his branch. "Silence, pitiful rabbit. You skitter and shake and beg, willing to sell off your own daughter for a bag of shit." Dag'ny usual happy demeanor is replaced with a look of pure contempt. He understands what it means to be of high blood, it seems.

"So tell me, what were the slavers doing with my women?"

There's a pause as conflict flickers across the man's face.

Finally, he lets out a small sigh.

"There is a noble in the Chatti tribe who is paying bands of slavers and bandits to round up any people they find in these woods. He said they were all traitors and escaped slaves, I assume you know how common it is for slaves to run away?"

You nod. Slaves need to have an eye kept on them, less they run away. If enough run away, they are likely to come back to free the rest of their kin with blades and a murderous intent.

"I.. I did not know they were from Brisgavi. To think that someone from Chatti would perform such an atrocious deed.." He shakes his head.

"Who is the noble who ordered this?"

He hesitates.
>>
>>38301811
"Any of noble birth who perform such a devious action has renounced their honor in the most grotesque of ways. They are worse than traitors, you know this."

There's a beat.

He looks you in the eye, determination glowing. "His name is Strauss Windweaver. He is my father."

You are taken aback at the name. You know him, he was always one of the staunches supporters of Priestess Rozalina. To think he has stooped this low in Brisgavi's hour of need...

"This... Comes as quite a shock to me, to think Strauss would betray us like this..."

"Wait, you know my father?"

"Yes, I do. I was the diplomat sent from Brisgavi to negotiate the terms of our people's alliance many times."

His eyes widen. "You are Cenric Bearcaster?"

You nod. As you do, his hands flies to yours and grips it tightly. "I am Cecil! I was told by Theodoricus to find you before I was ordered by my father to join this band of scum."

The bleeding man tries to speak up again, but Dag'ny stuns him with a particularly hard smack.

"Dog, speak."

The bleeding man glares at Dag'ny. His expression to normal, a childlike glee at the world.

His caution sated, the man looks back to you. "Oi, you callin' this fool 'onorable and stuff? I hear he got ran out of town by the guard!" He begins to laugh. "And the best part? He got scared with one of the women touched him! Can you believe that? Scared of one of those whores?"

The man doesn't even realize what happens next. In one smooth motion, Oskar raises his axe and cleaves it into the man's face. He died with his shit-eating grin plastered on his face. "This mutt deserved a much crueller fate." Oskar grumbles as he removes his axe. "At least the wolves will be eatin' happy tonight."

You look to Cecil. He adverts his eyes from your gaze. "It is true that the Guard was after me. I... I fell in love with a woman they say is off limits." He looks back to you, tears in his eyes. "My father promised that if I did this job for him, he would help me regain my status. He would help me be with Dortha again..." Cecil looks away as emotion plagues his features.

Standing, you nod to Oskar. "Watch him."

Oskar nods back to you as his sits, cleaning his blade on the dead man's clothing.

You walk in the direction Ema went only to meet her halfway, all the women freed from their ropes. She is shaking her head, and you can feel the hope that was welling up in your chest fade.

"They don't know anything?"

"No, they told me that they were out collecting berries deep in the forest and when they came back, they saw the Chausci army standing outside the walls as the city burned." She grinds her teeth. "They even had the gall to fire a catapult into the city. No reason, just for the hell of it I guess. It nearly killed me too, sitting in the room like I was."

"They saw the army?"

One of the women chime in. "Yeah, we saw it. It was almost as many people in the Brisgavi!"

"And the queen?"

"Ah.. I don't know about that." She fiddles with her torn dress. "We didn't see her, but we were far away. We did see those Royal Guard taken prisoner!"

The Royal Guard. They were members of the Queen's personal force, and to think your comrades were captured so easily...

"It was really weird too, they didn't look they were hurt or anythin'."

You take a second to let that process.

"Ladies.. I have a question."

"Hm?"

"How did the slavers treat you?"

"Ah, they were rough and all, but they didn't try to have sex with us or nothing after the last night."

You blink. "Wait, how long did they have you in ropes?"

"Since yesterday mornin', they caught us when we were sleepin', cause we were real tired from runnin' from our city the night before."

Brisgavi was surrounded by the Chausci army two days ago.. But why was the town still smouldering earlier today?

"So what did they try to do last night?"

"Well, they just wanted some of my lovin', you know? But I wasn't willin' to give it to them. One tried to force himself on me, but one of the others, Cecil I think, beat 'em up pretty good." She looks up while resting a hand on her chin. "He was an odd one, to say the least. When I hugged him to say thank you, he got all scared and ran away. He kept his distance from me the rest of the trip, and never touched any of us, not even pullin' our ropes." She nods. "He's a good man, I think."

You sigh. "I'm glad you're not hurt. The slavers have been taken care of, you don't need to worry."

The women smile at you. "Thank you."

"Do you have any plans for where to go, ladies?"

"Yeah, we passed a fishin' village an hour back. We had to skirt around it to keep hidden, but I think they will help us. Especially if we show some of the men our appreciation, ya hear me ladies?" They all laugh, and you can't help but smile. All Brisgavi people are strong. You're sure they will be fine walking to the village without you.

You wave your goodbyes to the women as they are sent on their way with a smile. Even if your city is in shambles, your people are too strong to be wiped out. Given enough time, and if you succeed in bringing back the princess and purging the traitors from this world, you think...

You think you will be able to rebuild.

"Let's go Ema."

You return to Cecil and stand before him. He looks at you, shame and hope flashing across his eyes. The wind blows through the treetops, lightly whistling and cheerful.

"Cecil Windweaver."

He adverts his eyes for only a moment, determination shining through his eyes afterwards. Here is a man who is ready to fight.

"As an honorable man, will you join us in our quest to save Priestess Rozalina from whoever may have her captive?"

You extend your arm towards him. He looks at you in confusion.

"Rozalina has gone missing, and I need allies to help me save her. Will you join me in this crusade?"

The wind stops.

You see the hint of tears in his eyes as he clasps your arm.

"I swear on my honor."

You smile. "Then let us get to work." You pull him up and clasp your other hand on his shoulder. "As a Chatti native, I assume you know of a way to enter the city unseen?"

"Yes, don't worry about that." He grins back at you.

"All right, let us be off!"

Later that evening you enter the city, successfully avoiding any notice from the guards.

You find yourself in one of the many merchant squares in the city. This late at night though, all business has stopped for the day.

All except one business.

You see hundreds of slaves, all looking worn and exhausted, being led into the massive slave housing building at the end of the square. You know the layout of the building, you gave the designs from your own building in an agreement with the Chatti last year. The slaves are held in cells that are highly secure with iron doors imported from Rome.

Your party walks on past the slaves. Such sights are not uncommon, even in Brisgavi.

As you pass the entrance to the slave's housing, Ema glances over and watches the men and women enter under the light of a torch.

"Cecil, do you know anywhere we can rest for the night? Our day has been long, to say the least."

"Why yes, the owner of the inn nearby is a friend of mine, he should grant us rooms."

Ema beside you freezes.

"Is something wrong?" You look towards the entrance of the building.

There is a man with dark hair with a strong body not unlike what you would see in a blacksmith. He has a burn scar on his left arm that looks like white flames licking up his forearm.

The man stops and turns towards your party while standing under the flames. Ema gasps.

"Eburwin?"
