You are Apex! Amazonian human tribal that ended up blended with some toxic waste as a young child, sucked up tons of unique DNA, got dragged to a lab at age 8. Was going to be burned at the stake by creationist nutjobs with his "on the origin of species" copy. Obviously, he evolved. Left for dead in a desert, bitten by a radioactive camelspider.

>PREVIOUSLY ON SUPERHEROIC QUEST
Earth is in peril from an incoming asteroid, but scientists in your hometown New Regis are working on a way to stop it. A cyborg called Next Zero threatened to kill these scientists, but you found his rural hideout and captured him. However, he claimed to never have made such a threat.

Handing him over to the law, your police friend Commissioner Micky gets a call on his radio.

"Micky here. Understood. Uh... huh."

He lowers the radio and turns to you, a puzzled look on his face.

"Call from back in town", he says. "Apparently... a girl was kidnapped by a dragon. According to her brother. This is a weird day. You'll help us out, right? Dragons aren't our usual jurisdiction."

What do you do?

Other supers have their own cities to protect. But you can let Micky and his cops handle this.

Micky assures you he has his top officers working on the case, but he figures you'll want first hand information on what you're up against. So you sprint back to the precinct in town, where you are shown to a frightened-looking boy, maybe twelve years old.

"Sis picked me up after school", he says, "and we were walking home through the park. We heard a roar, and two... dragons leapt at us out of nowhere and knocked us down. I thought they were gonna eat us, but they grabbed our legs - it really hurt - and dragged us off. But then one of the dragons hissed at the other, I think, and it dropped me. Then they ran away with my sis. They were really fast!"

"They looked just like the dragons on TV! Big lizard things with teeth and claws and... I'm not sure if they had wings. It all happened so fast..."

"Well... they ran to the right of the road... so towards the industry area."

You are already out the door of the precinct, running to the city's industrial district on long legs. This area houses many factories as well as the maintenance hangar for space shuttles.

Scouting out the area, you suddenly hear an inhuman roar or hiss from a nearby warehouse. It doesn't sound too different from the sounds dragons make in popular fantasy TV series.

You gain 1 Hero Point (total 1).

1 success - You charge into the warehouse with superhuman speed. Inside you see four reptiles that turn towards you in surprise. But they are not dragons. See picture.

Behind them a girl, 19-20 years old, sits on the floor. Shining beams of light form a cage around her, all extending from a piece of scrap metal that floats in the air above her.

The reptiles are getting ready to leap at you, but you have a split second to act first.

You lose 1 Hero Point (0 left). Controlling Spores is used up.

Deinonychuses rolled 2 = 0 defense

2 damage - You launch flesh-controlling spores at the dinosaur pack, and momentarily take control of two of them. They tear into each other and collapse on the floor, leaving you only two more to deal with.

They leap at you claws first.

Rolled 1 = 0 damage

You easily sidestep the dinos, who hit the floor and try to regain their balance.

You gain 1 Hero Point (1 total).

0 damage - You aim a kick at a deinonychus, but these creatures are quite agile themselves, and the dino dodges.

Their toothy jaws snap at you.

Rolled 2 = 0 damage.

With another lightning-fast move you avoid their bites. You seem evenly matched, at least as far as speed is concerned.

0 damage - "All right, reptiles, I was just pretending to be slow this far!" you shout, pushing your agility to the limit in a series of kicks and punches. The deinonychuses dodge each, and one leaps at your face.

Rolled 3 = 0 damage

You duck then come up for your next attack. The stalemate continues.

You lose 1 Hero Point (1 left).

Deinonychuses rolled 5 = 1 defense

1 - 1 = 0 damage - Frustrated, you reshape an arm into a huge biological blade and slash at a dino. But it catches your blade with the big claw on its foot, and the two of you struggle.

That is when a side door to the warehouse slams open. You look up and see a spear-wielding woman, dressed in furs, flanked by two saber-toothed tigers. See picture.

She shouts something in a language you don't understand and leaps into the fray, followed by her tigers.

Rolled 4, 5 = 2 damage

Deinonychuses rolled 3 = 0 defense

The tigers bring down the reptile clawlocked with you, sinking long fangs into it. The other dino snaps around to face the new threat, but the woman runs it through with her spear.

The dinosaurs are all dealt with. The strange woman says something you don't understand. Seeing your confusion, she grabs something from a leather pouch on her belt and puts it in her mouth, muttering something.

"Thanks for holding them up", she says. "I've chased them a long way. My name is Yata-Rig."

"Hey?" shouts the girl in the light cage. "Can you get me out of here?"

Yata-Rig gives the floating metal piece a whack with her spear, and it falls down. The cage dissolves.

You pinch a scale from one of the dinosaurs, and let your body integrate it.

"Dan!" the girl shouts. "Is Dan okay?"

Soon enough the sister and brother are happily reunited at the precinct.

"Sarah, did those people save you from the dragons?" Dan asks.

"Yes... dragons?"

>To Yata-Rig: "Okay, who are you, and what do you know about those dinosaurs?"

Ask if she'd be willing to give Micky a police statement. He'll never fucking believe this if we don't have a witness.
>>
>To Yata-Rig: "Okay, who are you, and what do you know about those dinosaurs?"

"I am a witch of the Stripe-Walkers. I'll explain from the beginning. About ten years ago... from my point of view... a star fell from the sky. It destroyed the great dinosaurid civilization, and a long winter came that the survivors could not handle. Us humans, however, had foreseen the disaster and hid in safe places, and the cold did not hurt us as much.

But a few days ago, we heard a few surviving dinosaurs had left for the impact crater, so I and my two friends followed them to see what they were after. Their tracks led to a strange shiny device at the bottom of the crater. From the device stretched a tear in reality. We went through, and... the aeons flowed around us. We returned to the world after a heartbeat and two hundred thousand years into the future. Your now."

You wonder if Micky will believe that. You wonder if you believe that. Your history education isn't the best, but you're pretty sure dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago, not 200,000 years ago. And they were not a civilization!

>To Yata-Rig: "What do you think the dinosaurs wanted here?"
>To Sarah: "Do you have any idea why those dinosaurs captured you?"

>Okay, yeah, this conversation is happening in front of Micky now.
>"What do you think the dinos wanted here?"
>>
>To Yata-Rig: "What do you think the dinosaurs wanted here?"

Micky is listening to your conversation, looking more and more confused.

"I don't think that was all of them", Yata-Rig says. "I heard there was a Psion-Monarch leading them. I believe they are looking for a way to save their kind, somehow."

>"They picked the wrong epoch. There is a 'falling star' on its way here right now..."
>"How? There can't be enough of them to repopulate the world!"

>"They picked the wrong epoch. There is a 'falling star' on its way here right now..."

"Wait a minute", Sarah says. "That device you found... what did it look like?"

"Four rings attached to a staff", Yata-Rig replies. "As long as my arm, made of shiny grey stone."

"That is... Okay, this is top secret, so don't tell anyone, but that's how the matter-annihilator looks. The one we have developed to destroy the Iron Meteor."

"You're with the world-saving scientists?" Micky asks.

"Yeah", Sarah answers. "It's a device that annihilates matter near it. Nothing left. We couldn't figure out exactly how it broke the laws of physics like that, but... it would seem it sends the matter into the past! So when we use the matter-annihilator on the meteor, we send it back to wipe out the dinosaurs 200,000 years ago!"

"So the dinosaurs rigged it to travel the other way", Yata-Rig says.

"This doesn't make any sense!" Micky exclaims. "Dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago, not 200,000! There are fossiles and stuff!"

"We'll deal with that later", Sarah says. "The dinosaurs... talked in my mind. They pulled out my memories... they know how we are trying to stop the meteor. And the annihilator is being loaded on the shuttle tonight!"

>Head to the shuttle, fast

>Head to the shuttle, fast

You rush to the space shuttle hangar. Yata-Rig and her tigers follow. You get in there just in time to see the matter-annihilator being loaded onto the space shuttle.

"That's the device I saw projecting the rift between times", Yata-Rig says.

Everything seems calm around here. No sign of sabotage.

And then a T-Rex bursts through the wall.

>TO BE CONTINUED

That's all for tonight. Tune in tomorrow (~18 hours) for the next installment of Superheroic Quest!
