Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you got high and cheered up an abused woman.

It is currently the 3rd of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You're not entirely sure if she's merely asking to be friends as the two of you were throughout your youth, or if she's proposing a rekindling of the relationship you shared whilst the two of you were still betrothed. You don't want to preclude the possibility of friendship, but you don't wish to get her hopes up either. “Sadly I will be going abroad. I leave tomorrow for Anthus to see to my business endeavors in that city.”

The disappointment is plain on her face, the smile she's worn since you told her of your brother's departure faltering. In the end, you can't bear to completely disappoint her. “However, upon my return I would not be opposed to spending more time together. As friends, of course.”

Your words seem to have alleviated some of her disappointment but you still get the feeling she's not wholly satisfied. “Of course, as friends.” She pauses briefly, nervously chewing the corner of her lip for a moment before turning to slide her book back into its place on the shelf, speaking to you over her shoulder. “Well I suppose if you'll be abroad, learning to fight might be a worthwhile endeavor. I must admit that Darzi seems like a very kind woman. I will ask her about the possibility of lessons later tonight.”

Hopefully a female friend will help her return to some semblance of normalcy. Even if she is beautiful, and even if you do care for her, you find the way she seems to cling to you, or at least the idea of you, incredibly off-putting. A consequence of your brother's abuse, no doubt.

You wander the library for a while longer, trying to take stock of your apparently vast collection. You have books of a range of topics; histories, biographical works, military tactics, magic theory, erotic literature, genre fiction, treatises on proper behavior, and nearly every other conceivable topic of writing. Sadly your laborers failed to organize your library in anything resembling an easily accessible way, and you doubt there is a catalog. Perhaps that's a project you could assign Fulvia or Prema to?

After touring the library you escort Vasuda back out to the second story balcony. You're faced with a few options. You could introduce her to Zahak, and show her your bedroom. You might also show her your study and the observatory above. Both of them would necessitate revealing information you might rather keep to yourself. In the case of the bedroom, you'd reveal the existence of your adoptive draconic son. In the case of the study, the various untrustworthy artifacts which dwell within.

Party or study/observatory.
If the latter, just tell her not to touch anything, and to keep it a secret, we're showing her because we trust her and she's important to us.
Okay, the last bit may be a bit too romantic-sounding.

Thanks for the date, please keep it for every opening post. It has been very difficult to follow the progress of the date, since we had only three dates (beginning of the quest, return from Namek, end of GM Meditation) so far and sometimes the days seemed to have more hours than usual between sunrise and sunset. Yes, it sounds a bit autistic[/Spoiler]

>the way she seems to cling to you, or at least the idea of you
I'm really glad Mik noticed this. Vasuda doesn't love Mik, she loves the image she's built up of Mik as this ideal husband based on their experiences as children.
>>
>>38333293
That's because the Samjan day has no fixed length. A new day begins at sunset and last until the following sunset, thus some days are longer than others and some days are shorter. I basically just ripped off Jewish and Muslim religious calenders.

Did a fire grandmaster ever make an artificial source of light over a city and troll them into thinking night never came?
>>
>>38333387
That honestly sounds impossible to do with a city, unless the GM had hundreds/thousands of vys at least.
Seems more doable with a village, but still pretty fucking hard, blocking out the sun as well as the whole night sky.

Is she more beautiful than Darzi? Or should I really not expect someone more beautiful than Darzi to just show up without explicitly being stated to be a ~10/10?
>>

You could just use an illusion instead of blocking it out. I could see Varvar fucking with the monks and the villagers like that.
>>
>>38333549
That's what I was implying, yes, but even with illusion, something big enough to cover a whole city and be detailed and realistic enough to fool them, as well as maintaining a miniature sun, should be incredibly draining.

You glance towards the door to your study, frowning slightly in thought. “Well, I would love to show you my study. However, there are a number of magical artifacts inside that I still don't fully understand. Of course, showing you into my bedroom would hardly seem proper, especially when there is still a party to be enjoyed in the ballroom.”

It's hard to tell due to the shade of her skin, but you're relatively certain her cheeks are flushed. She clears her throat, nodding once. “Of course, I am a married woman after all. Rumors of an affair so soon after my husbands departure could be disastrous for my reputation.”

The two of you make your way once more down the steps and into the dining hall. Your slaves have already cleared away the dishes and cleaned up any spills or messes left by the crowds of drunken guest which crowded the table only moments before. You wonder idly where Mortia and Fulvia are. Presumably they're in the cellar of the tower, still attending to that giant rat you helped create.

All told you probably spent slightly more than a half hour touring the estate with Vasuda. Returning to the ballroom, you find that the revelry is beginning to wind down. The band is still playing, but a slower tune. Rather than dancing it seems most of your guest are resting or engaged in conversations of their own. You note that many of your guest are absent from the ballroom, presumably lounging in the sitting room. Your father is currently relaxing amidst a pile of pillows, your family surrounding him. All save Chetan, who is sitting with Rasim and the apprentice girl who's name you still don't know.

(1/2)
>>
Vasuda touches you lightly upon the arm to get your attention before speaking. “I believe I will go speak with Darzi, but I really do appreciate you taking the time to speak with me Mikhael. I cannot recall being this happy in the decade since I married your brother.”

She departs, and you're left searching for someone to pass the time with in conversation. Of course, you could always call an end to the festivities here. Your father seems about ready to leave and it is starting to get late.

War, battle, waifus, smut, fantastic racism
But enough of this, instead I'll bring this up again:
Once we start to do anatomy studies on people, we should try this
>if necessary, cut off an arm
>regrow it with Water magic
>at the same time, use Nature magic to mimic the process with a plant, see if we can't make an anatomically sound arm from plant tissue
>maybe at the same time do it with ice, see if we can't make an anatomically sound arm from ice
I believe Soma has confirmed that this would count as an experiment as well, so we get a vys in addition to knowledge.
>>
>>38334363
It has some smutt, but not too much.
Orcs take slaves, so multiple female characters are guaranteed, its decent and in my opinion similar in quality to aspiring emperor, but with less social shit.
Other than that, nothing too bad about the threads.
Except there are some people who waifu random shit, and others who want to abolish the orcish system with modern shit.

>>38334365

You don't see Profectus, Mohan, or Ismail in the ballroom. You do see Derya, Rajani, and Delshad chatting amicably by the refreshment tables. However, as you cross the room you catch sight of a flash of light from the smoking room, and a surprised shriek, followed by laughter. Curious, you change course and instead make for the sitting room.

As you step inside a wave of heat washes over you, and you're surprised to see that hovering in the center of the room is a ball of molten fire. It glows a bright white, bathing the room in impossibly bright light. Profectus' arm has cracked open, light bleeding through the gaps in his stone arm as he stairs on mystified. Meanwhile, Hadia and Master Padma inspect the swirling ball of heat and light. Your friends Mohan and Ismail look on vaguely amused, while Ismail's mistress Jayashri stares on passively and Mohan's mistress watches the proceedings with mild distaste.

“Pani's tits, what happened here? Profectus, what are you doing slinging fire from that arm of yours inside my estate? Do you remember what happened in Anthus? You burned down an entire district of he city!” You scold him sharply. Your words seem to snap those in the room out of their reverie.

Profectus starts to speak, but Ismail cuts him off. “Sorry, Mik. He told us that his arm amplified fire magic and we bet Hadia that she'd probably get her ass whooped by an elf it came to a duel. She bet that she could extinguish any flame before it even had a chance to burn her, and this is the result. You've got a miniature sun in your sitting room”

Profectus laughs nervously, scratching the back of his head with his normal arm. “That's pretty much the gist of it, Mik. I know it was probably a bad idea, but you know... seemed like a find idea at the time.”

The ball of light winks out, and but the heat doesn't dissipate. You feel like you're standing in an oven. Hadia crosses the room, Profectus stepping back as if he expects her to hit him. Instead she swats Mohan in the back of the head, scolding him in Samjan. “You know how elves are! They have no self-control! You should have known better than to encourage such a foolish course of action.”

He apologizes, but he's still grinning like an idiot. Profectus seems entirely lost, eventually deciding to merely take a seat and be glad he's not getting hit. Hadia joins them as well, sitting down in a huff between Profectus and Mohan. Since it's not like you have anything better to do, you join them. You have to squeeze in between Profectus and Ismail, but you manage it.

Mohan speaks up once you've gotten yourself situated. “Fantastic party, Mik. It is exactly what I needed, an opportunity to relax and forget about the day to day worries of a Vatis. You know the Shah has ordered this grand project to construct a second wall, larger and thicker than the city's current outer wall, an additional mile away from the city gates? He says he plans to relocate the slum dwellers beyond the walls and turn the Eastern Slums into a fortress to rival ancient Eshnuk. This in addition to repairing the current outer walls.”

Mohan, being an Earth Vatis, will most likely be doing much of the grunt work that comes with any construction project in El-Amin. Mohan's mistress, a woman in the robes of a Master Vatis, nudges him with her elbow. “It's an opportunity to prove yourself, Mohan. Don't be so pessimistic. Now, will you not introduce me to our gracious host?”

(2/3)
>>

Realization seems to dawn on Mohan's face. “Right! Of course, I nearly forgot.” He gestures to Aminah. “Mikhael, meet my beloved. Mistress Aminah Joshi. She oversees the acquisitions department at the Grand Library.” Next, he gestures to you. “Aminah, my dear friend Mikhael Abdul-Hakim. I suppose I don't really know what to title you any more. Aghtaki? Adventurer? Mirza?”

How curious. Usually, if two Vatis form a romantic relationship it will be a Master with a woman who either served as his apprentice or who is a younger colleague of his. The fact he's dating an older woman, and more than that the fact he's moved in with her and not vice versa, is rather contrary to the norm. On the other hand, the Joshis are a powerful family with lands to the south of Marqash, and Mohan isn't even a minor noble. It sort of makes sense.

You shrug your shoulders. “Well, I'm not really an aghtaki any longer. I'm due to be unbanished by the Shah himself soon. I suppose Mirza would work. It was the title I bore before becoming a Vatis. How did the two of you end up getting together?”

Mohan smiles fondly as he presumably recalls their first meeting. “We met whilst I was studying a ruin at the edge of the Pa'vala. I was carefully clearing away the dust from a collection of glyphs carved into the wall of an old fortress. Then all of a sudden I hear the runners of a ship hissing across the sands. Fearing bandits, I ducked into the ruin. Instead I met Aminah. She was there to retrieve a book said to be lost somewhere inside the ruin I was studying.”

Aminah takes over the story at this point. “I enlisted him to help me search the ruin, since I presumed he knew it better than I did. We were caught unawares by a pack of lions which had turned the deeper reaches of the ruin into their den. One of them bit me, and flung me against the wall. When I woke up I found that Mohan had fought off the pack and healed my wounds. The rest is, as they say, history.”

“I actually intend on moving in with her, in the near future. We're still waiting to see if the Shah executes Ismail for daring to so blatantly go against the established law by moving in with his mistress.” Mohan announces, earning a laugh from Ismail.

Kadir is the top dog in El-Amin
His siblings and children are next in line if he kick the bucket
The Vizier is the next in line if they all get wiped out
His children are if he dies as well.(maybe)
Mik's father and anyother Emir are directly after the Vizier.
Zaahir(elder brother) and the eldest sons of the other Emir families

Place somewhere in there Shezade's old position.

The Emirs are the same rank.
Its just the other emir has a shit ton of clout politically. Which means, we need to get our shit together and once we clear our mind.
Our dad should have started claiming the lands awarded to him.
Our unbanishment should have gone underway.
Our water planet should be up and running.
>Giving our dad the needed fund to settle the lands.
And we should work on gaining allies in the shahdom.
I honestly want Darzi to go with us to Pa'vala
but I want her to gain back her position as captain and with her new gear, and association with us to gain her a few ranks in the military.
Same with us I want to soon get our grand master robes.
>Gain a shit ton of power in the shahdom.
Eventually lead a small army and start conquering lands either the elves, the warlords or some petty kingdoms.
>We will have the money once our water planet is up and running. Deal with our dad, for more investments he needs capital for. And Started wrecking EVERYTHING.
but you know long term..After getting the elaudian steel, the red orb
And of course the priority cleansing our mind right after we kill Chys's husband.
>>
>>38336713
also to add on to that.
>Khedives have been considered the equal of Emirs, and thus only one step below the Shah in terms of rank.
So we are totally asking for that as our unbanishment gift. And negotiate for some small lands or something.
And of course for the land we already own, by the docks that is our estate. Which will make it clear of any legal trouble and a huge rise in rank. And prestige for both ourselves and the family.

>>
>>38336847
I actually don't think saving the Shah's life is enough to make you a Khedive.

>There have been three Khedives in the past one thousand years.
>The first was a warlord who rallied an army of human mercenaries, Aghtaki, and retinues to march on the Samrajya.........This may or may not have been due to the fact that the bastard's army outmatched the Shah's by a fair margin at the time.
This guy did it with military might.

>The second was the brother of the Shah, a powerful Vatis and a competent administrator. When the Shah died unexpectedly at a young age (poison, some say. Others say it was suicide), his brother became regent for his then infant son. He granted himself a stretch of fertile land along a desert canyon.
This was political masturbation

>The third was actually one of your many times great uncles. He was one of the most talented Vatis in history, a Grandmaster of the fifth degree before his hundredth birthday. He was also the son of the Abdul-Hakim dynasty's founder, and an accomplished soldier to boot. The events of his life are ill-recorded, but according to your family histories he singlehandedly repelled a invasion force sent by the Rhynian successor state which ruled the northern plains at the time.
And our uncle was a war hero who was way cooler than us. Saved the city rather than just one (albeit powerful) man.
>>
>>38337021
Well lets cause a all out war with some kingdom or another. Then we join up and get our land.
>>
>>38337021
Easy solution; conquer the old capital of our peoples.

We're going there anyway, how hard could it be?
>>
>>38336953
I want the power.
Who leads it could easily end up being our father, since he has much more experience. And I wouldn't mind, and that would strengthen our position immensely.
honeslty even taking the lands of our rivals in our families name I would be fine with. So long as it keeps adding to our families power. And if Kadir isn't a cunt.we should keep him on the throne.
>>38337021
Soma said it would be fine. And even if he didn't.
You're telling me, saving the heir to the throne life isn't enough for a title? We're already a noble under the 3rd most powerful man in the kingdom. So it's not the biggest jump either.

He did say we may be asking for to much if we demand land as well as the title. But I am going to be going for it, even if we have to pay some taxes on it. and then have some one rule it in our name or something.

No anon. We must become the solid stone standing within the river. If we are completly isolated from the outside influences we are in a much better position to do shit that fucks with reality, and also far more protected against the spirits wanting to fuck is in the skull
>>
>>38337509
Its physically aspects are cool( than again we usually fight ranged), but i see this as guaranteeing that anything that tries to mind fuck or anything we do by mistake will be heavily resisted.
Plus i want to be old as dirt, and not rely on on giving away memories to stay sane.
>>
>>38337253
I don't see why not.
But from expert and on we should focus strictly on mental fortitude. And I say once we've a good understanding of mental protection at master. We gain our insights that way. With our trait it should help Immensely.

GUYS
I never even thought about it.
The child came out of Surya's heart..The portal represents an entrance into surya heart no? Or some part of surya. The child literally ripped open a portal and came out of it.

Obviously no, we were told they are portals used by higher beings to travel.
Also, I think the Child ripped a new portal into the Void, didn't use the Gate.
>>38337599
We have a sanity restoring ring, I doubt old age insanity would be a problem.
>>38337599
We still should get everything to Master or half-GM level before trying another GM meditation, to minimize the damage the limits/EXPONENTIALLY THICKENING WALLS will cause to our attempts.

See, was it so hard anon?

>>
>>38337599

+ our trait we should be doing alright.
>>38337509
Anon yes I agree they are nice.
And I don't mind using that to get up to expert. But at a certain point, we need mental protection a lot more than we need physical.
As a gm in water, defense point should have become a lot easier. And thus less costly, we're working on nature. And we can dodge alot of stuff. And if it makes it past both us dodging it. And point defense. We have armor, We could reinforce that instead of ourselves and it should protect more.
>>
>>38337712
>We still should get everything to Master or half-GM level before trying another GM meditation
I know, just throwing an idea out there.
>we have a sanity restoring ring, I doubt old age insanity would be a problem
Insanity was the second reason, my main reason is that i don't want our mind to become anyone bitch like it did in the mines, hell we owe the three stooges a favor.

And we are not getting the title of Khediv, Kadir was already reluctant to unbanish us and still put in a "execute if does something bad" part into the deal, he will not agree to making us a Khediv.
In fact, our best bet is to just conquer the rival Samrajya(?) and be the emperor of it, and then wait it out until Kadir's popularity wanes and is attacked from the outside, so we can snoop in and be a good guy and help rebuild the Shahdom under our guiding hand, take an El-Amin girl as our wife, and unite the two countries.

Yeah, the gun seems pretty sucky, honestly we should probably just keep the gem, seems important/powerful.

Future guns were said to be more accurate and have better rate of fire, but our current old gun does a shit load more damage.
Soma answered this on his ask page ages ago, when we first got the guns, no clue if he did the same in thread though.

did you bother reading my post.. I said 230.
We're at 112
That is a 118 difference.
But I do agree with you 100+ threads to finish off our current mission and thats not bull shiting every chance we get.
>>38338930
We can shoot magic out of this weapon. Range not costing us anything because the rune is inscribed into the gun.
>>38338932
I fucking agree. I doubt we even need bullets anymore. We could likely just shoot magic out of the gun.And it be more accurate than it was before.
>>38338986
its not about channeling magic into them.
Its about that it was a gun made with magic in mind. Even has a rune for ranged so it costs us less vys to channel it into the gun and shoot.
>>
>>38338996
>the gun seems pretty sucky
It was made with magic in mind thus better than all of our guns.
>>
>>38338986
That is not how magic works, anon.

Have we considered carving some runes into the future guns?
>>
>>38339060
If we first learn how the ones on the Rhynian Pistol are structured and composed, maybe it could be considered.
>>
>>38339054
Isn't it? Dont we have a meta that does exactly that?
>>
>>38339060
Maybe, but we probably would need SK help, since i can see that blowing an arm off.
We would also need to study the runes in the gun.
>>
>>38339085
Yes, we can channel shit, but not the same way our magic pistol can, that has weapon channeling enhancer shit on it and runes to make using it easier.
I'm not even sure if channeling magic into regular guns would actually affect the bullets, might be we need to channel into the magazine/clip/bullets as well at the same time?
>>
>>38338996
It is a more advanced version of the gun we currently have.
It is likely more powerful, and has more than just ranged inscribed into it.
Likely has beam.
possibly 2-3 more And such.

GUYS. The problem we were having before was we didn't know how to fuck around with the bullets.
Fulvia + SK's knowledge = more bullets
a factory of bullets really.
We should now have that covered. We should have SK work on that, to make more bullets and with now fire master I can only imagine the amount of damage it will dish out.
>>
>>38339134
It is considered, now recorded, and now memory.
>>
>>38339060
Are future guns made to handle magic?
We don't know. I would rather not try to be honest, least untill we run out of most of our bullets till we have like 4 bullets left.
We never practiced shooting which is why our shooting was shit. We need SK to make bullets. turn the - into a + and things get better.
I want to learn the shit out of the oud aswell

These are truly exciting times in which you live. If the practice of living openly with one's mistress becomes common among Vatis the logical next step would be the rights to marry and have children. “Well I can only wish you the best of luck then. Hopefully the Shah does not see fit to put a stop to such a harmless practice as living with one's beloved. It's not as if it isn't already common, Ismail simply lacks the social graces to be subtle about it. For that, we must thank him.”

Ismail scoffs. “Please, the two of you worry too much. We have lived together, both as master and slave and as lovers, for-”

He falters, grasping for a date. Seems between the alcohol and the opium he's a bit scatterbrained. Fortunately Jayashri saves him. “A year and five months. For eleven months I have been a free woman.” She states matter-of-factly. In a way, she reminds you of Chrys. Except not quite as stoic.

Ismail snaps his fingers. “Right! That's it. A year and a half now and neither this Shah nor his father did anything about it. Someone needs to stand up and tell our illustrious ruler that the systematic oppression Vatis have suffered for thousands of years must stop, and it must stop now. With out generation. Vatis play too vital a role in the government and in the running of the state. We deserve better.”

You must admit, what he says resonates with you. You never liked the fact that in order to become a Vatis you were forcd to renounce all claims to noble titles. Nor do you appreciate the fact that you're vowed to celibacy, even if it's a vow you have no intention of staying true to.

To shift the conversation out of seditious territory, you decide to ask about your friend's research. Most Vatis pursue some sort of research, although in the early years of a Vatis' career they usually make little progress. “So what has everyone been studying? Any breakthroughs to share with an old friend?”

(1/6 or 7)
>>
Hadia chooses now to speak up. “Actually yes, I've made good progress in inventing, or rather reinventing, a metamagic that I believe saw common use in the wars between Hiacia and Rhynia. It allows a caster to use ambient vys instead of their own vys to cast a spell, thus allowing them to theoretically cast as many spells as they wish without fear of exhausting their reserves.”

However, I've run into some problems. First off, it spells cast in this manor may harm the caster as well as the target. I learned that the hard way when I set myself on fire. Second, spells seem to be weaker than they would otherwise be if cast from one's reserves. Third, it severely limits the spells that you're able to cast. As I'm sure you all know, a Vatis must filter their vys in order to cast with it. You can't do that when casting using ambient vys. You have to rely on whatever vys is most prevalent in the area. In El-Amin, that essentially means you can only cast Water magic.”

That sounds incredibly relevant to your interest. “Have you managed to cast using ambient vys, or are you still only in the planning phases?”

She sighs. “I managed to cast a spell fueled by ambient vys. I don't think I've managed to cast a spell using ambient vys. I say that because I was attempting to heal a cut on my arm. Instead, I froze my arm solid. There is still some facet of my research missing. I'm basically trying to reverse the Hidden metamagic and it's just not quite working out right.”

(2/6 or 7)
>>
Ismail shrugs his shoulders. “My research is not nearly that impressive. I've been looking into large scale glass production using fire magic. I've worked out a system of pipes that I've been using to channel jets of flame which heat a variety of kilns evenly, thus allowing a single Vatis and a dozen or so slaves to produce far more glassware of far better quality than they would under usual circumstances. I plan on expanding this to other things as well. Iron smelting, coin minting, the works.”

Mohan pulls the silver bit of the hookah pipe in the center of your little circle out of his mouth. “My research has stagnated completely. I was trying to figure out if I might be able to use Earth magic to destroy someone's mind. There are documents which attest that Earth magic can be used this way but every time I've tried, I'm using birds as my test subjects, my 'grasp' on the magic just slips away. I can't act upon the minds of the birds. Now with these new construction projects, I'm just far too busy to put in the effort of researching anything.”

That actually raises a point you wanted to ask about. “Why is the Shah so interested in turning the Eastern Slums into some sort of vast fortress? It's been more than six hundred years since El-Amin was besieged. Repairing the current walls, sure. I can understand that. They're an embarrassment in their current state. Building an entirely new, even larger wall and populating it with the detritus from the gutters just seems unnecessary in my mind.”

(3)
>>
Mohan shrugs his shoulders. “He's phrased it as some great bid for popularity. He's having us construct additional houses, streets, shops, public baths, basically everything a man could ask for in the space between the old walls and the new. He intends to flood the market with new homes, thus reducing their value to the point that slum dwellers could maybe afford them. The fact he's employing a vast number of these poor folk he intends to move into the new neighborhood will also put some money in their pocket. I don't know. I guess his heart is in the right place but the fact he wants to expand military presence in the city strikes me as worrying.”

Hadia poses a question. “So, wait, is it an actual military base or some sort of City Guard headquarters? Because if it's the Guard then I can understand, they've been understaffed for decades. They can barely monitor the Market District at all these days. If it's the military, I can only assume he plans on launching a recruitment drive. Maybe he's planning an invasion?”

Profectus actually chimes into the conversation at this point, speaking for the first time since you sat down. “I think you're all missing an important aspect here. I've met Kadir, briefly, and I can say with confidence that he's an arrogant bastard. It was common for the Imperator of the Rhynian Empire to engage in mass public works projects in the city of Rhynia upon coming to power, so he could name everything after himself. The Walls of Trajan. The Baths of Vespasian. The Hall of Apolonius. I'd bet fifteen gold El-Amin will soon play host to a Kadiran, or Kadian, or Kadirian something or other.”

Kadir does strike you as the sort of person who would move the sky above and the ground below just to put his name on something important. “I could see it. 'The Kadian Walls' even sort of has a ring to it.”

You spend some time relaxing and chatting amiably among your friends. Mostly about politics, but about anything really. You find out that Delshad's apprentice is named Sushila Mullur. She's not of any noble family, her father was a blacksmith and her mother a florist who operated a shop across the street from her father's.

Apparently some rather nasty rumors have been spreading about Delshad's relationship to his apprentice, some say he's been taking advantage of her naivety and youth for his own pleasures, but your friends discount such rumors as blatant attempts to smear his character. Apparently he killed a man in self defense, a man who happened to be connected to some rather powerful criminal organizations, and they're the ones spreading the rumors.

You also learn that the city of Marqash is going forward with its plan to resettle parts of the Pa'vala with freed slaves. Since the city freed all slaves within its jurisdiction, they've been crowding the city. The city has in turn experienced food shortages, riots, and a massive crime wive. Their plan to resolve the overcrowding is essentially to send the offenders off into the desert to die.

You choose then to ask Mohan about the Pa'vala “That reminds me, actually. I plan on making a voyage into the Pa'vala in search of a specific ancient artifact said to be near the old Imperial City of Hiacia. Do you happen to know anything about that accursed desert which might aid me, Mohan?”

He cocks his head to one side, tapping his chin contemplatively. “Hire a native guide. I saw a dozen expeditions enter the Pa'vala and only one came back. Now, three of the expeditions had native guides but apparently any expedition returning is a momentous event. There was a massive celebration in the border town I was staying in.”

(5)
>>
“Oh, and stay away from the Palaka. I got to see a hunt in action. It was magnificent, the sight of it. It reared up above the sands, two hundred feet tall if it was an inch. To kill it they had teams climb up on its back and pry open the scales to reveal the soft flesh beneath. They put something underneath the scale and after they'd climbed off, an explosion seemed to shake the earth. A blast of wind actually knocked me off my camel as it rolled past. I'd never seen anything like the rain of blood and guts that followed in my life, but that was just to wound the beast. In order to kill it they just sat back and let it bleed out.”

Hunts are a rare event which take place on the border of the Pa'vala whenever a worm draws too close. Usually they stay well away from the border, but occasionally a large worm may slip through and when they do they wreak havoc and destruction wherever they go. Every man, woman, and child in a village will arm themselves and set out into the desert to track the worm and kill it. Some use poisons, others use traditional weapons. You've never heard of any worm being killed using a bomb.

I don't recall it having stated limits or anything like that. All we know about it is that channeling vys into it progressively lights up the gems and embiggens black streaks which spread across it. There was never mentioned any specified limits, but we also never charged the sword beyond lighting its three gems.

Hiacian Saber: You reach into your cloak, withdrawing your Shockwave Sword and your Hiacian Sabre.... The three gems embedded in the langet. The two furthest up the langet are relatively small, while the one at the junction of the hilt and the blade is easily much larger in comparison.
You haven't really taken any time to examine the sabre. .. You begin by simply channeling vys into the blade, but nothing obvious seems to happen. The gem placed highest up the blade might glow a little but you can't tell. You channel more, and then channel yet more, until the uppermost gem is glowing brightly.
>Vys Pool: (22/30)
While the blade obviously stores your vys it doesn't seem to be doing anything with it. You push more vys into the weapon, but now it's the second gem that's starting to glow instead of the first. By the time you've got the second gem glowing brightly thick, black veins have stretched their way across the blade, pulsing rhythmically with power. Curious, you can't help but wonder what it is they might do.
>Vys Pool: (21/30)
Getting the third gem to illuminate requires more vys than the previous two. However, the pay off is equally amplified. As the gem glows brighter and brighter the discolored black veins that had stretched across the surface begin to widen.... simply appears to be turning black little by little. By the time the third gem is glowing brightly the blade is a patchwork of black metal, only thin cracks of grey steel breaking up the splotches. Unfortunately, you've still got no idea how this might affect your attacks.
>Vys Pool: (18/30)

Sezhade's Remarks, Hiacan Saber: As for the sabre, if it is indeed the sabre I think it is, it was issued to the elite of our military. The high officers and generals. I never handled one myself, but if I recall correctly its effects were not overly amazing. Vys flows along the blade, enhancing its ability to slice through armor.”

You push yourself to your feet, bowing low once you've righted yourself. “If you'll excuse me, dear friends, I believe the smoke is starting to get to me. I'd like to keep my head clear for later tonight. I believe I'll track down Delshad, Rajani, and Derya. I haven't spoken with them as of yet.”

Your friends send you off amicably and return to their own conversation. You slip out of the sitting room and make your way once more to the ballroom. Standing next to your throne on the raised platform which separates the ballroom from the sitting room, you search the crowds of guest for your friends Rajani, Derya, and Delshad. They had all been talking amongst themselves when last you saw them.

You spot the three of them at the refreshments table. Delshad is enjoying some sort of pie, you can't tell what kind it is from here. However, he seems to be the only one eating. Delshad and Rajani are merely taking regular sips from their cups. Rajani in particular looks like she's been hitting the alcohol fairly hard. She sways just slightly back and forth and her hair, usually kept smooth and straight, is in disarray. Derya seems likewise intoxicated, but he's leaning against the sturdy wooden table to support himself, eyes half-lidded. Only Delshad seems sober.

You make your way across the room, coming to stand next to Delshad and Rajani, directly across from Derya. They make room for you. Delshad sets his fork down on his plate and swallows his bite of pie before punching you lightly on the shoulder in greeting. “I was wondering when we'd get a chance to talk, Mik. It's been ages. Thought the day you were banished was the last I'd ever see of you.”

Rajani, who had been rambling along quite amiably about nothing of any import, has clammed up now that you've joined them. She mumbles a greeting which is quickly drowned out as Derya drunkenly calls out. “Mikhael! My friend, how I've missed you!”

Lurching off the table he places his hands on your shoulders, pulling you into a hug. You return the gesture halfheartedly, seeking to separate yourself quickly. He reeks of booze, and the last thing you want is a friend throwing up his dinner all over your robes. “You know, Mikhael. You know... I was really surprised when you got banished. I thought, lemme tell you what I thought, I thought that for sure it was the worst day-”

Delshad interrupts him. “Okay, Derya. I think you've had a bit too much to drink. Why don't you have something to eat? Maybe some baklava will soak up the liquor in your gut?”

Derya responds petulantly. “I'm not drunk! Not drunk enough to kick your ass! You wanna duel me? Lets do it, right here!” Funnily enough, he cries out all of this whilst clumsily cutting himself a fat slice of baklava and a fork. In his drunken state the operation of silverware seems to escape him initially, but eventually he figures it out. He settles in to eat moodily, glaring at Delshad all the while.

You turn your attention first to Delshad, since Derya seems to be sulking. “So, you took on an apprentice? Why so early in your career? I mean, I can't imagine with the kind of time commitment a young Vatis must put towards work in order to earn their pension you're barely able to spend any time teaching the girl.”

He grins. “Ah, that's where you're wrong. You see, I didn't specialize in Water, Nature, or Earth magic so my duties to the state are minimal. I am a Metal vatis first and foremost, and quite good at what I do as well. Thus I mostly make money working on commissions for wealthy noblemen, crafting some statue or weapon or piece of armor. I can charge exorbitant rates because there are so few Metal vatis of my calibre.”

He pauses to take a bite of pie, savoring it before he continues. “Anyway, under normal circumstances I would not have taken on an apprentice even if I do very little work over the course of the average day. That hasn't been true as of late, the Shah is having Metal Vatis reinforce the new wall as it's being constructed. He wants the core to be solid steel with a stone facade. It's incredibly slow going work, but I think it's worth it for the protection the walls will offer. At least, from land invaders. If we're blockaded then we're absolutely screwed.”

He waves a hand dismissively. “Right, apprentice. So, normally I wouldn't of taken an apprentice but Sushila was a special case. She's from a poor family, her father is a blacksmith and her mother a florist. They do well enough to support themselves and their family but there is no way they could have secured a good tutor for their daughter. I'm a personal friend of her father's, he actually taught me the very basics of Metal Magic and I worked in his forge for a time while I was an apprentice, so he came to me and asked that I take her for a nominal fee.”

He pauses to take another bite before concluding his little speech. “The fact she is exceptionally talented also played a role in my decision. Her talent manifested itself in the form of a jet of flame hot enough to boil molten iron. At least, that's what her father told me. She's certainly talented but I'm not sure I quite believe his claim.”

You suppose that's understandable, though you're still not sure you would've made the same decision in his position. Granted, you don't know what it's like to be a Metal vatis in service to the Shah. If the work load really is as light as he says, then you can see yourself growing desperately bored unless you had something to research.

Turning your attention to the group as a whole, you divert your attention to more casual conversation. “So what have you three been up to since I left? Researching anything of interest? Working yourselves ragged?”

Rajani clears her throat daintily, apparently mustering the courage to speak. “W-well, um-” She closes her eyes, taking a deep breath to steady herself. When next she speaks, she sounds more confident. “I've been working towards attaining Grandmastery of Nature magic. I've already mastered the element, but Grandmastery is eluding me. I've hit this wall that I just can't seem to progress past. My duties as a Vatis allow me plenty of time to meditate and think. I essentially tend the farms to the north, ensuring good harvest to sustain the city. However, I feel I do not take enough risk. I need to do something dramatic, something truly spectacular to earn my Grandmaster robes.”

i can't even begin to describe my feelings on that.
>can't push button fast enough
>>
You nod your head seriously. “That's what I found. I earned my Grandmastery of Water magic by rotting my flesh off the bone but maintaining my internal organs. For a week straight I was essentially nothing but a shifting ball of black, swollen flesh. Many times I came to the edge of death, only to recover and ultimately succeed without any lasting complications. I've also heard of Vatis battling hydra and consuming their hearts, or living beneath the sea for years at a time. Perhaps a voyage into Elaudia would offer the insight you seek? You would certainly be surrounded by nature.”

The look on Rajani's face speaks of a revelation. “You've given me a fantastic idea. You know, of course, that Nature magic allows one to expand their perception beyond the limitations of their own senses, yes? Well I've heard tales of ancient Nature vatis who once subsumed the consciousness of animals and bound them to their wills. Perhaps if I were to launch an expedition into Elaudia and seek to enslave the dangerous predators who dwell within that forest I might find the insight I seek?”

You spread your hands magnanimously. “Perhaps you will. If you need anything that I might be able to offer, you'll know where to find me. Sadly I'll be leaving for Anthus tomorrow but you'll still be able to reach me through my Master. I certainly wish you the best of luck, Raja.”

She clams up again. She used to absolutely hate it when you called her Raja, back when the two of you were kids. Fortunately Delshad fills the silence. “I've mostly been looking after Sushila and working. I haven't had much time for research, though Rajani and I did discover something of mild interest the other day."

(3/5)
>>
He clears his throat "Rajani was helping me meditate upon the mental aspects of Metal magic by trying to fill my head with random thoughts and images. I in turn attempted to keep them out. I discovered that Metal magic an actually affect the minds of others by causing their thoughts to cease. It basically turns the target into this sort of mindless husk. Quite disconcerting, but useful.”

Huh, you suppose Metal magic has some minor offensive capabilities after all. Granted, Delshad is probably far more competent in it than you are. Derya stops aggressively eating baklava long enough to join the conversation as well. “I've made progress on invisibility. Normally it's considered the realm of Masters and Grandmasters, true invisibility that is. I'ts been difficult but-”

Just to mess with him, you force yourself to fade from sight. “True invisibility like this, Derya? Is this what you're struggling with?”

Derya sighs dramatically. “Yees, Mikhael. No need to show off and be a dick about it. I've managed to make myself invisible in parts, like little sections of my body or one limb at a time, but I can't make my entire body invisible yet. I figure if I just keep at it, I soon ought to figure out the piece of the puzzle I'm missing. In the mean time I work at a bath house, heating and cooling the pool.”

You suppress the urge to snicker. Saying that a woman 'works in a bathhouse' is basically a way of saying that a woman is a prostitute. Working in a bathhouse, considering how effeminate Derya is, was a poor choice. Seeking to change the subject, you turn your attention to Rajani. “You know, I saw you in the market near the Grand Library buying fruit the other day. I wanted you to know that vendor swindled you. You could've gotten all of your purchases for a silver or two if you'd pushed a little harder.”

(4/5)
>>
>>38342719
>A decent metal vatis
Just the man we need.
>>
Rajani frowns. “But I always feel so mean! I mean, those merchants need to eat too, and I have plenty of money! I don't really mind overpaying I just don't like that they ask so much of me. His original price was ten gold! Ten gold, for fruit! It was outrageous.”

After that, conversation turns towards the mundanities of life. Prices at market, who's sleeping with who, books you've all read recently. The conversation is light and pleasant and it serves well to pass the time. Eventually you feel a hand rest on your shoulder and turn to find your mother and father standing behind you.

Your father smiles, inclining his head to you briefly in greeting. “The party has been wonderful, Mikhael. I couldn't be more proud of you. However, it's getting terribly late and I really do feel that I must be getting back to my own home. I intend to meet with Emir Yasin tomorrow morning to negotiate exactly where our new lands will be located.”

You note that the rest of your family have gathered behind your mother and father. Duha and Pratima both are relying upon Halima to keep them standing, while Chetan is rubbing his cheek reverently. You're not entirely sure why. Your brother Zaahir supports his pregnant wife, who looks half asleep already. Hard to believe that your family get tired so early. It's probably only midnight, perhaps one in the morning.

Metal Magic, Musical-Mental Synergy: You turn your attention to Sister Balik. “Tell me, have you ever tried combining your skills as a musician with your skills as a Vatis?” She raises an eyebrow, subtly. She begins to pluck out a simple tune, and you feel a burst of vys as she cast a spell, metal magic you believe “You tell me.” As she says this, the tone of the oud seems to warp and distort. You feel your thoughts muddled, a haze descending as the music seems to consume your attention.
And then it simply ends as Sister Balik presses her palm flat against the strings, stopping the music. Most of the other monks are similarly enraptured, though one recovers quickly and complains. “Damn it, Balik! I hate it when you do that.” She simply smirks, paying him no mind. “It's primarily useful with metal or nature magic, but I've also used it with fire and water. When I tried earth magic, it just broke my strings.” She shrugs, utterly nonplussed.

Prthvi, Sezhade's Remarks: That... doesn't sound good at all. “Who was Prthvi?” The Varistha shakes his head pityingly. “A god most ancient, worshiped long before the Hiacian Empire united the disparate tribes of Samjan into a cohesive political entity. I only know him as the former God of Earth, Pani's closest ally and the lover of Srsti, the Banished Goddess.” You have less than zero idea what on Earth he's talking about right now. “Though the god himself is dead, and has remained such since being betrayed by his jealous lover, a cult has always festered beneath the surface, hidden away in the darkest recesses of society. They reached the height of their power shortly after the Rhynian Empire fell and many of the members sacrificed themselves to bring about the return of their god. However, the ritual failed and instead their collective power was placed into the body of a young girl, driving her mad. The rampage that followed destroyed the Hiacian Empire.”

Just the raw distilled power of a few hundred samja cultists focused into the body of a young girl. Nothing special.

It is the little girl. Her sanity was destroyed but she survived. And according to the Metal Codex Mastery of the elements is connect to our "how close we are to the gods" coming in contact with a god could theoretically strengthen beyond GM.
