You clench your eyes, whipping your head back and forth- your hair flying messily in every direction with the movement.

Satisfied with your current state of wakefulness, you pull your hair back from your face, coming eye top eye with an amused looking Lann.
"What?"
"Nothing, nothing."
"It is early, yes."
"I'm sure."

You do your best to ignore her as you dress- pieces of armour strapped into place, one after another.
Your pauldrons fall into place, and you remove your snake necklace.
Ezzy makes an attempt at a sleepy protest, and you tuck her into Lann's bed.

"Why did you just-"
"The warmth will keep her asleep, yes."
"And now there's a snake in my bed."
"Lamia."
"Small, scaly, poisonous creature."
"Venomous, yes."

"Is there even a difference?"
Your friends follow you both out into the hall, various states of gear strapped in.
"She is only dangerous if she bites you."
"Oh, wonderful. Nothing to worry about, then."
"You complain a lot for an adventurer."

It is possible Lann just got anxious when she was told "bandits are coming", and between telling us to get our spear and now she realised there is a giant earthshaping spider in town, so its not actually that big a deal.
>>
If it is bandits, we get in a little practice against serious humanoid targets, then.

Maybe someone's going around challenging guilds to duels and already beat some of the other guildies. Takes out a few swordsmen, feeling good... Suddenly GIANT SPIDER INTERRUPT.
>>
>>38334247
Kind of related, I feel like we're bound to get injured eventually. I mean, we've not yet, and never taken any significant damage.

Earthshape a tunnel and/or pit for them, then hang down over the edge.

Small town in monster territory is still just a small town...... OH GODS, THE EARTH JUST SWALLOWED THEM UP. NOW THERE'S FIRE. AND LIGHTENING. AND HOLY FUCK THAT SPIDER JUST WIPED OUT TWENTY MEN WITH A SWING OF HER SPEAR. OH GODS SHE PICKED UP THE HEAVY CAVALIERLY AND IS THROWING THEM AT THE OTHERS. You wait till you hit the common room before you turn on your friends- not because you are the paragon of patience or anything, it's just a little bit of a pain to turn in hallways.

You keep your conversation running with Lann as you work, pulling straps tighter, prodding at armour as you wait for your friends to array themselves appropriately.

"What is it, anyways?"
"What is what?"
"The guild went to all the trouble of waking us up, yes? So something that needs the attention of all the adventurers."
"Ah. I don't know."

Sheszka struggles a bit as you clip her gauntlets on properly.
"You don't know?"
"Nope."
You sigh, letting the wiggling wolf back on her feet.
"Anything, then?"

The half-elf shrugs.
"Something set off the wards."
"Wards? Magic, then?"
"Yeah. Noone goes out at night, right? So if something passes through the wards towards the village..."
"It's a monster."
"Yeah."

It makes sense to you, at least.
"Still- Why wake everyone?"
"Ah."
"Ah?"
"A whole lot of things set off the wards."
"And that is bad, yes?"
"Groups of things working together, or even something big chasing a bunch of little things- They're all bad."
"Yes."

You step out into the cool night air behind your friend, flexing your hands around your spear.
There's a steady stream of adventurers heading to the edge of the village already, some more awake than others.

You follow the current of people, all pulling on armour and readying themselves for a fight.
This isn't good. It's dark, for starters.
And while that isn't a problem for you in the least, humans have a bit of a different opinion about unknown creatures in the dark.

One problem at a time, then.
"Jin?"
"Lyra."
"You can see fine in all this, yes?"
"All this?"
"In the dark."
"Yes!"

You offer her your arm, and she hops clear of the skull, talons clenching around your limb.
You pump your arm once, twice, then fling her into the sky overhead.
Even with her brilliant feathers, she's only visible a moment before she vanishes into the night, utterly silent in the cool air.

"There'll be harpies at the gate as well, you know."
You shrug.
"I trust Jin, yes? I trust each of you."
"I- uh. Yeah. They've probably already headed out, though."
Huh. Even Lann gets embarrassed.

"Well, Jin is faster."
"Do you even know the other harpies?"
"No?"
"How are you so certain, then?"
"It's Jin, yes?"

The archer mutters something along the lines of 'crazy damned spiders', but she keeps it to herself, at least.
"Oh. Lyra?"
"You are done complaining to yourself already?"
"No, I- Shut it. Should I send a runner to your sister?"
"Probably not, yes. She hunts from a web. I do not think she would be much good in a fight."
"Alright."

The gates are brightly lit in the night- a pair of blazing fires roar just outside the walls, drawing monsters and adventurers alike towards them.

You skitter through the crowd.
Someone probably knows what's going on.
Or at least how this will play out.

You'd think the adventurers would have someone issuing orders, pulling people into a cohesive guard.
As it stands, it looks like it will be a huge mess of people fighting their own battles against whatever is coming out of the woods.
Maybe you should just make a wall?
Throw some ramparts up there.
Medieval siege it up.

No, now you're just being ridiculous. What if it's some sort of monster harpy? Or monster arachne? They could get over walls with impunity.
Or a monstrous land octopus or something. One of those giant monsters from the inner woods. They could just step over the walls. Or right on the houses or adventurers or-

You need to stop letting your imagination go like that. It's distracting.

You do, however, manage to spot the elderly gentlemen who sits at the gate all the time. And while you're fairly certain he isn't a guard, or even an adventurer- He's out here all the time.
Information!

You trot up next to him, which is a great deal more difficult than it sounds.
Trotting is for people with four legs, not eight.
What you managed was more of a crawl, really.

"Good evening, yes!"
"If it isn't the village's favourite spider-y lass."
"Can they tell me apart from other spiders?"
"Who knows? Folks'll probably be asking your sister why she isn't red anymore inside the week."
"She'll be delighted, I am sure."
>>
>>38336541
He throws back his head and laughs, despite the atmosphere.
"I appreciate the company, but I'm gettin' the feeling like you didn't come over to chat."
"I came over to ask questions, yes? It is like chatting."
"That's a very one-sided sort of a chat, lassy."
"You can ask questions if you like, yes."

He chuckles again before waving you on.
"Do you know what is happening?"
"Not a clue. You?"
"I am waiting for Jin to get back, yes. I meant more about what the adventurers will do, yes?"
"Oh. Well, it's happened a few times. They mostly line up and make a mess of everything."

"That sounds... less than effective."
He cackles again.
"It gets the job done. Eventually."
"What happened the last time? Or times."
"Huh. First one was wolves, I think? Pack got too big. That was... twenty, thirty years? Damn, I'm getting old."
"No mirrors in your house?"
"Says the giant spider."
"I am a young giant spider, yes."

He leans back in his seat, crossing his arms as he thinks.
"We had one attack by bandits, I think. That was practically a joke. The harpies chased 'em for near a week after that. And after that... There was a kelpie that one time. Smashed a few houses. A few folk on the river died, but they got it pretty fast- One of the guild's big shots was in town."

Your conversation is interrupted by white wings, Jin coming in for a landing on your shell.

Do we have to find a peaceful solution? I'm pretty sure Shezka didn't become fireproof until recently, and claws and teeth aren't great against chitin. Once we skewer enough if them they'll get the message.
>>
>>38337803
If we have to fight them, they are most likely going to die.
>>
>>38337715
I think a single, stable pack could manage it alright. As long as no outsiders come along trying to assert their own dominance, it should work out ok. They would be far enough from the wolf territory that they wouldn't have to contest their hunting grounds with another pack.
>>
>>38337803
What if we get the alpha to 1v1 shezka, or get shezka to challenge the alphas authority. She is scary enough to the point she'll PROBABLY win.
>>
>>38337824
Nah, we can beat up wolves without killin' 'em.
>>
>>38337715
>even in the time of the city they didn't manage to stop them from murdering eachother

They did. They got them to behave by having more powerful monster races (like spiders) assume the positions of Alpha and end the constant struggles for dominance.

From what I understand, if we establish ourselves as the unquestioned Alpha, they'll fall into line happily enough. Then we can order them to settle somewhere and not constantly fight amongst themselves.

I'm not committed to the idea of the village or anything, it's just the only obvious option that comes to mind right now.
>>
>>38337835
But we are her alpha. Ergo, we will be their alpha.
>>
>>38337803
>. And if we beat them up, then they'll follow us.
That worked with Sheszka because she didn't have a pack and wanted a new one.
If beating up the Alpha would be the end to all conflict among them, then them killing eachother all the time wouldn't be a huge problem, so it seems they usually fight to the death.
As we know from Sheszka own backstory.
>>
>>38337834
Shezka can pass off for one of there own kind, a challenge from her would be taken FAR more seriously than a challenge from us.
>>
>>38337848
>They did. They got them to behave by having more powerful monster races (like spiders) assume the positions of Alpha and end the constant struggles for dominance.
No they didn't.
Thats a thing some arachne did, but it didn't end the fighting for all those that didn't get a arachne alpha to keep them in line.
And we are not going to stay around.
Even assuming just beating the alpha ends the fight, which is clearly not the case, because then Shes wouldn't have had to flee.
>>
>>38337861
Sheszka IS one of their kind, and they have proven perfectly willing to accept other sorts of monsters as their alpha in the past, just sayin.
>>
>>38337859
From what I get, when the alpha dies they all either surrender or run, she ran. Also >>38337856 Yes, but I doubt that an alpha will take a challenge from us seriously, as we are of another species and it can probably bullshit a reason to sic all its kind on us, with Shezka it has no excuse, not even that we are scary, also it gives her direct authority over the pack and helps her feel better about herself.
>>
>>38337859
I'm gonna try to avoid lethalities on this one. Especially since we don't know what put the idea in their heads to attack the village.
Scaring 'em off is go.
>>
>>38337848
>it's just the only obvious option that comes to mind right now
No, the obvious solution is we kill them until they start fleeing.
Which is also whats most likely gonna happen.
>>
>>38337886
It has never been suggested that they care even slightly what species their alpha is, so long as it can beat them in a fair fight.

>>
>>38337980

>>
>>38337980
>Or rather the one that absorbed hers?
Pretty clear they were killed, obviously Shes wouldn't have had to flee if they just absorbed the pack.
>>
>>38337980
Then we make sure we take that tabard back that her old alpha had, if they brought it.
>>
>>38337980
>Same pack that orphaned our wolf
>Would have killed her too

Yeah, I imagine it'd go something like that.
>>
>>38337996
>Not killing the Alpha that slaughtered her parents

>>38338047
They may have absorbed the lower members and killed the Alpha.

For instance her mother could be a part of this pack and subservient to the new alpha. Shezka was the old alpha's offspring so she had to be removed/eliminated.
>>
>>38337879
>Thats a thing some arachne did, but it didn't end the fighting for all those that didn't get a arachne alpha to keep them in line.

All the packs had Alphas from other races back then. That's how they put an end to their infighting. If only went pack to the old ways when the civ fell apart.

Of course, that's beside the point. We're not discussing controlling all the packs. We're discussing options for controlling this pack.

>Even assuming just beating the alpha ends the fight, which is clearly not the case, because then Shes wouldn't have had to flee.
Hardly a president of anything. We don't even have any details about that situation. Maybe the rival pack didn't want to absorb another into its ranks. If they were competing for territory or something.

Maybe the other Alpha just didn't challenge for dominance. Lot's of possible options. We can't draw any absolutes from one poor example.
>>
>>38338088
>They may have absorbed the lower members and killed the Alpha.
They definitly killed the Alpha, but the way Shes talked about her old Alpha, didn't make it sound like it was her parent.
Might be because of how werebeasts work,I guess. But it just seems more likely they just killed them, since we know that werebeasts killing eachother is a problem.

I fail to see a morality argument?
If they attack the village and threaten the lifes of people in it, they get killed, if we don't do it, the adventurers and harpies will, and I'd rather not risk anyone by not fighting hard enough.
I think people are just a bit overly optimistic if they think "challenging the alpha" will solve the problem, since there is no guarantee the others stop attacking while we fight the alpha.

>>
>>38338390
Because no one seems to read what they type anymore! It's frustrating. This quest needs management.

And it all started with a discussion on how to deal with the werebeasts.

In my opinion, we should first try to find and defeat the Alpha, and fight/scare them off if it doesn't solve the problem. That's just what I think, and it's fine if you don't agree.

Alright.
This is the point where you find Lann, and Lann finds an officer and all of this becomes someone else's problem.
Punching people is easy. Decision making is hard.

You fly through the group of adventurers in an entirely non-literal way.
And you've apparently spent enough time around them, because they all get out of your way immediately.
It's nice to be appreciated.
And also very large, but you're sure the appreciation has nothing to do with that.

You spot your friend checking her arrows, her ready-strung bow at her side.
"Lann!"
She looks up, her eyes catching Jin's white feathers behind you.
"You've got some information, then?"
"It's werewolves."
"What? Why?"
"I do not know, yes? It is not like Jin spoke with them."

"Bloody gods- This is harpy territory, isn't it? I thought the borders were the one thing everyone till accepted!"
"I do not know! I am six months old, yes? And Sheszka is the only wolf I know!"
"Officer. This is time to find an officer and make this not my problem."

It's nice that people at least share your opinion.

Lann practically marches her way to the forefront of the crowd, where a trio of adventurers are arguing over... something.
You recognize one as Edmund, though you haven't seen the others before.
Not sober, anyway.

"-scouts should be back shortly. We need information before we-"
"We can reassure people, if nothing else."
"How? Pat them on the back and promise the monsters won't get them?"
"The arachne's in town still, isn't she? Didn't Ed say she even signed up? Get a stone wall up."
"And if it's got wings?"
"It's not about effectiveness. People are riling themselves up-"
Edmund coughs into his hands.

It's universal. Or dimensional.
Actually, universal covers that, right? Or not?
No, this isn't important right now.
>>
>>38338717
That sounds fair to me.

Now I'm sad lugging around Ezzy diminished our chance of getting a actual crocodile-girl companion.
>>
>>38338674
I am a bit curious about if ghoul arachne is an evolution, but that would be a radical shift in the tone of the quest and would cause a shitstorm.
>>
>>38338750
"Miss Lyra, Lann. Is there something?"
"Spiderbutt sent out her harpy. Apparently it's a pack of werewolves."
"Wait, what? Why?"
"Do people actually call me that?"
"Just Lann, but-"
"That isn't important. What is even going on?"

Everyone looks to each other.
"This isn't actually helping, is it?"
"No. On the plus side, that stone wall sounds really good right now."
"Mhm. We should have a bit of time, if nothing else. Adventurer Lyra, may we impress upon a need for upgraded defenses?"

You look past the low wooden walls of the village, scratching your head idly.
It could certainly use some work. Nothing permanent, of course.

"Something simple is fine, yes? I don't want to knock myself out before I fight."
"Do you actually do that?"
"No? Just headaches and exhaustion."
"Fair enough. Wide enough for use to stand on, though."
"Mhm. Stairs, or do you have ladders somewhere?"

The officer checks the field, his men.
"Two sets of stairs, please. And wide, too."
"I can do that."

The ground before the village heaves, dirt making way for solid stone.
You wrap your construct around the village, sealing it off from the outside completely. The top of the wall widens, and you add a guardrail to the top.
People are stupid. Always.

Stairs unfold from the sides of the wall, wide steps descending from the top.
Adventurers are apparently more efficient than you gave them credit for.

In seconds, they have taken the battlements- or whatever you want to call your wall thing. Fires are lit, weapons readied. Archers and other ranged fighters take position along the walls, watching the forest beyond the clearing surrounding the village.

You don't have to wait long before harpies swoop back into the town, almost invisible against the night. Information is gathered, prepared.
And in the woods beyond, the first set of eyes catches the light of the defender's fire.
And many more join it.

>It depends on all sorts of things, but as a general rule- The less thought Lyra puts into something, the easier it is. There's limits of course, and the wall is pushing up against Lyra's as it is.

Sounds like when Lyra gets those splitting headaches she really needs sugar and water then.

She burned off a lot of energy and her brain is tired.

She should ask for a quick snack from someone then. Some bear jerky with honey glazing?

I think the wolves have a good chance to jump the walls too.

Or leap to the top.

Going to be a mess.

Its a stone wall, the moment they set foot on it they surrender themselves to our domain. We can suddenly make the floor vanish, or make spikes shoot up into them, or make caltrops and other stupid shit.

>see a stampede of rats
>set up defenses against the rats
