It was a hard beginning, but you endured, and thanks to you the hive endures. It is your will that has tamed this piece of wilderness, and started to turn fate in your favor. There were many losses and lessons to be learned from those defeats. However, they did not dissuade you from keeping your pace, and thus you prevailed. Such is the will of the hive, you are the hive, the unrelenting wave that grinds the stones to sand, time if your ally and numbers your weapon.

Food now grows plentiful, and while your needs are increasing, no longer is there a great danger of starvation. It even allows you the indulgence of keeping what little remains of your first clutch. Their tiny and weak bodies a cute reminder of a hard and unforgiving beginning. Nearly melancholic, but perhaps a sign of your fortitude. The hive must grow, and your enemies, the ones called KEEK, they must be dealt with.

Just two days ago you saw streaks of light descending towards the east, but judging by their trajectories as they streaked across the sky perhaps the distance is but a few hundred kilometers. You however have the troops to cross such a distance now, if only reminding yourself that it would also take more time than you are willing to admit. It is mountainous terrain and you are actively avoiding the KEEK animal, your scout is always a good four kilometers ahead and alert. Trouble will not find you easily, not today at least.

The mountain terrain provides a contrast in the fauna and flora small critters seem to scurry along and hide in a myriad of abodes. While larger game is more scarce, above in the trees you see them devoid of any sort of avian. Strangely enough what passes for leaves are overgrown and quite a strong shade of blueish-white. Perhaps a different adaptation for photosynthesis. What it may be you are not entirely sure off. Your advanced scouting group stops at a clearing, there is nearby lake that provides with plentiful water.

The lake provides a welcome sight, there are no KEEKs or giant crustaceans around, nor corpses floating abound. Its beauty in nature, the water so clear and undisturbed that it forms a mirror in which you can see the reflections of your soldiers and workers. You task the workers to find the source of this clear water, and it takes them a few minutes to comb the area, there is little evidence of any sort of river and your thinkers idly give ans answer with the fervor of a child holding back a joyous excitement. “The snow melts mother!” You chuckle, but of-course it does, perhaps some sort of nascent underground heat source, the mountain could be a dormant volcano, thus this would be a hot-spring. But the temperature is not yet boiling, so not volcanic...

The thought is interrupted as your scout reports heavy smoke ahead, perhaps seventy or eighty kilometers away from his current location which is a good twenty kilometers from the group. This however is in turn interrupted by the immediate feeling of pain, and the scout reporting that its falling. Metal, metal. It screams in your mind, then it goes silent, you cannot contact it nor feel its presence its gone. What will you do?

The event is quite disturbing but not enough so that you would have your scouting party turn back now, that would be disgraceful, besides as cold as it may be for a mother to say it, these children can be replaced. But you judge that any danger ahead can be countered with proper planning, so to prevent future surprises you spread out the party. If one encounters trouble the others are merely within fifty meters of each other. Sufficient separation that you can count on them to comb the land on their way towards whatever awaits in the distance and yet still be safe from anything that may target a group.

The group however advances slowly, enough so that the scout catches up and provides over-watch. Again you regain a visual, there IS smoke in the distance, judging by coloration and what you can analyze from spectrograph data it is not indicative of uncontrolled burning, this is deliberate. The distance is perhaps seventy kilometers, a second set of eyes up would be required for a better judgment of distance. The night approaches, and at least at altitude your scout starts to feel the temperature dropping. It it not bothered by it, its radiator wings will not freeze and its body has an endothermic organ.

With the night so rapidly approaching you think its best to minimize the possibility of things going wrong. And that means creating some sort of shelter, your two workers get busy digging in a circular manner while your soldiers cut and pack pieces of snow into familiar rectangular shapes. While your workers could produce a biological shelter given time it would consume unnecessary nutrients and it would take longer. These method comes from an ancient memory, you know not exactly from whence it comes but it is very old indeed.

When your workers are done and the shelter is completed the party hurries inside where its warm and slightly safer. Tomorrow brings a new dawn and perhaps the scouting party will be able to reach the location of the smoke and determine what causes it. Ideas fill your mind, and possibility of sentient life is there. It could be KEEKs, they have shown to be more than meets the eye, but you doubt it. For all the apparent sentience, there is a lack of tool use, which would be indicative of higher order intelligence. However, you are still puzzled by their use of corpses, perhaps later you will have the thinkers ponder on that.

You cannot add more farms, no more idle workers to start them up.

You can ask for more workers for them in advance thought.

Then just lay the workers and have them queue up to build the farms as soon as they hatch.
