05:23. Washington D.C. United States of America.

With dawns early light, you and the squad can finally take in the damage that the alien incursion has caused to the city. Between the fires and collapsed buildings, D.C. resembles Stalingrad more than a capital city. The gunfire has tapered off through the night, as the remaining alien units start to become isolated and eliminated.

To the north east however, there is still sporadic gunfire as military units mop up the remaining resistance around the mall.

For you, daylight brings little reprieve, after taking the Marine barracks, your squad dug in, awaiting additional units to replace the army squad that you lost to the chryssalids on the second floor.

During the night, you had to repel two half hearted assaults by floaters from the freeway overpass to the south. It was during one of these attacks a stray plasma round from a floater disabled the Bradley you had left covering the main street, Its gun mantle being melted into a lump of metal slag. So much for amour plate.
Little more than a mobile barricade at this point, the vehicle crew wisely opted to dismount and join the other defenders.

The local troops seem to be fine deferring to your instructions, although technically you don't have any authority over them.

Ammunition however, is starting to become scarce. Between the chryssalids and floaters, your team is running low on laser power packs. While there are plenty of spare conventional weapons around, it would definitely be a downgrade.

Your about to gather your troops when Bradford comes over the radio.

"Successfully linked up with friendly forces, resistance was heavier than expected. Local commander requested that we assist him in relieving a marine unit that was pinned down in their barracks. We were successful but allied units suffered extensive casualties.
Currently just north of the highway overpass, have been unable to advance further due to enemy spoiling attacks. Ammunition is becoming an issue as well. Oh and we lost the kids"

There is a short pause as Bradford processes that last bit of information, Shortly followed by an exasperated sigh.

"Well thats the third worst thing to happen today. Your orders remain the same, eliminate enemy resistance and reduce civilian casualties. Our intelligence sources suggest that the biggest concentration of enemy forces is to the navy yard to your south. I suggest you scare up some armored support from the locals. And find your missing squad members, those two are extremely high value to our programme. If they dont come back, you dont come back. Bradford out"

Well that went well. At least he didn't chew you out this time. Bradford was right however, the street widens ahead of you to the overpass, attacking without armoured support would leave your squad exposed in the open. Looks like you'll need to scare up some sort of vehicle support.

> Talk to the squad for advice

Gathering the team, you fill them in on your conversation with Bradford, mentioning the open area ahead of you.

"Da, without support, road is killing zone" The Russian responds, looking down the street littered with burnt out vehicles.
"Ivan is right, with the overpass there, they can rain fire down on anyone moving along the road. Cant we go around?" Heather asks.

Looking down the road, the highway overpass extends as far as you can see to the east and west, looks like its not any better anywhere else.

"If you... Get me above it...I can see everything" Naoi whispers from behind you as she avoids eye contact with anyone "We would need a.... Helicopter..."

"If we get a helicopter, why dont we just use it to skip the overpass?" interjects Heather.

The American interjects, "Fuck it. Call in Artillery, the Army should have gotten its ass together by now..."

Well, at least you have more options. Either way, your going to have to get some help from someone.

"I like our snipers idea, lets get some top cover..."
Naoi smiles nervously, while Heather gives you a dirty look. She still has a thing about being in charge...

Telling the squad to get back to their positions as you jog over to one of the firing positions that the army troops have set up in.
"Hey, you guys got radio coms?" You ask when you reach the closest firing position.
"Yeah. Local net only though, I can call Captain Mcknight up at the coffee shop if you need anything beyond that..."
"Do it. Tell him we need a helicopter..."

"Bravo six four to Bravo Actual. I've got one of those advisor's requesting a helicopter at the overpass, over"
You cant hear the response, but he seems excited as he responds
"Roger, LZ in the drill square, ETA 5 minutes" He grins at you as he finishes that sentence.
"Well?" you ask, wondering why he is so happy.
"Just wait and see..."

Five minutes later, you and Naoi are standing in the parade square when you hear the sound of rotor blades to the north, closing in fast. You see the rounded shape of a transport helicopter pop over the buildings to the north, followed by two very much more ugly and angular shapes. Attack helicopters.
The transport quickly makes to land in the square, while its two escorts circle slowly, occasionally firing a burst from the chainguns at an unseen target to the south.

> Get on the helicopter and direct the squad from above.

Following Naoi aboard, you grab a seat facing outwards, your battle rifle trained out the window. Not only can you fire from this position, but you can direct the battle below you.

As your helicopter dusts off, you switch radio net, directing your squad to prepare to advance once you've eliminated the resistance on the overpass.
Heather takes to leading the ground element, gathering up the various army troops and marines through swearing, flirting and sometimes kicking.

Within minutes, you have a sizable force ready to advance down the road. You signal the helicopter pilot to start circling the area, watching as your two Apache escorts hold formation with the transport.

Below on the overpass, its hard to see any movement among the corpses and burnt out vehicles.

> Have the Apaches do a rocket run to flush enemies out

"Hey flyboy! Can you get our escorts to drop a few rockets on that highway overpass?"
"Roger that. Instructing now"

Seconds later, the apaches pull away from your circling helicopter, one of them standing off and covering the other as it moves into make an attack run.

Diving in at high speed, the first Apache fires pairs of high explosive rockets at the highway, exploding a couple abandoned cars, catering the highway and shaking its supports.
This has an instant effect, as a veritable rain of plasma arcs into the sky, narrowly missing the first Apache as it pulls out of its attack run. The second responds with its chaingun, firing at the sources of the gunfire.

"Sir, Apaches are reporting the enemy is cold, we're going to have to visually ID our targets" the pilot calls back as you continue to circle.

Bringing your scope to your eye, you can see the floaters pulling themselves out of their hiding places, firing ineffectively at both you and the other helicopters.

> Engage from outside their effective range. It wont kill many, but it will keep you and your helicopters safe
> Engage close up, high risk, high reward.

"Tell the Apache's to pull back and engage with the chainguns, we're just here to support the ground troops" You yell over to the pilot, before switching over to Heathers radio net.
"Enemy is suppressed, close and engage. Will spot targets from here"
Below, you see Heather nod and blow you a kiss as you pass over, her snappy comeback lost in the downwash of the rotors.

Your helicopter flight moves back half a click, circling in a lazy fashion, drawing the occasional shot of plasma that fizzles out before reaching you. The Apache's start to work over the area with their cannons, firing at muzzle flashes and movement.

Next to you, you can hear Naoi whisper over the intercom "Spot for me. Please?"

Looking through your scope at the overpass, you can see one or two floaters hunkering down behind wrecked cars, their eyes skywards towards the Apaches. No point engaging them now, your just here to keep them distracted. Further along you can see another looking down the street towards where Heather is throwing a smoke grenade, ready to fire on anyone advancing down the street. He's hiding behind a smoldering wreck of a van, putting him in pretty good cover.
"Target. Five Fifty Meters, Behind the flaming van." You call to Naoi, who adjusts her aim.
"Sighted. Engaging" She responds, relaxing her posture as she pulls the trigger.

Through your scope, you her shot impact the wreckage in front of the floater, drawing its attention and causing it to hit the floor in a hurry. At this range the laser sniper is losing most of its penetrative power, being unable to penetrate the thin bodywork of the war. If it had managed to go through, it would have taken the floater in the upper chest...
But, your not here to kill aliens right now, just distract them.

Heather's team moves up quickly under the cover of smoke, passing under the overpass and approaching the supporting struts.

A couple of the floaters have finally noticed that they are being assaulted from below, one of them pulling a blue and green object from its carapace, while the other ignites its jets and hurtles over the attacking squad.

> Engage the one with the grenade

"Shit" you mutter you yourself, settling your scope on the one with the grenade. You pull the trigger sending a laser bolt flying his way. Your snapshot doesn't hit, but it keeps him from moving and being able to drop the explosive on Heathers team.
The flying on the other hand comes to a halt atop one of the buildings behind Heathers team and starts firing plasma bolts down the road. Thanks to heathers smoke grenades, no one is hit, but the attack stalls in the open.

Naoi is already attempting to engage, but its well outside her engagement distance, the laser just not having the power to do anything but annoy.

> Tell Heather to engage the floater behind her while the Apaches make rocket run on the overpass again.

"Engage that damn leaker!" you call over to the pilot, who quickly relays this to the Apaches. Both of them simultaneously fire a pair of missiles at the Floaters location. A total of four missiles hit the building one after the other, obliterating the floater in an explosion of gore and metal, before causing the building to collapse inwards in a cloud of dust.
However, this distracted the Apaches from suppressing the remaining floaters on the overpass, who spots Heathers team just as they start their assault.

From your vantage point you cant do much as your troops engage, they manage to get onto the overpass quickly enough, but immediately come under fire. Your team makes it to the cover of the wrecked cars, but two of the local soldiers taking hits as they climb over the crash barrier, they fall in the open.

One is obviously dead, his chest melted by a plasma bolt, while the other has had his leg removed at the knee and is screaming in pain.

Once again, the assault has stalled, the attackers need to keep pushing or they will be picked off one by one.

"Use your damn grenades and get clear of the kill zone!" You yell into the microphone, watching with frustration as the attack stalls.
On hearing your command, Heather pauses, Gives the finger to your circling helicopter, and throws a flashbang, followed by a pair of frag grenades over the top.
The tactic works, the incoming fire tapers off enough for Ivan to get his MG set up and start providing suppression.
Now for the endgame...

As you circle overhead, you see your team break cover and close with the floaters. Heather and Frenchie seem to have been training together again, overwatching each other as they quickly flank the isolated floaters.
The Apaches at this point, having finished with using their hellfires, pull back and provide perimeter security, the combat now is too close to try using their cannons or rockets.

From your vantage point however, you and Naoi are perfectly positioned to pick off the floaters. You keep putting laser bolts down whenever you see a floater attempt to move, or withdraw to better cover, pinning them in place for the ground troops to mop up.

In under a minute, there are a dozen floater corpses and at least three green smears from where Heather got close with her shotgun. The remaining floaters attempt to pull back, only to be shredded by the cannons of the circling Apaches, who pick off the ones foolish enough to break cover.

With the overpass secured, the aliens resistance melts away, with you team quickly advancing down the road to the entrance to the navy yard.

In the cockpit, the pilot calls over the intercom to you "We're reaching bingo fuel, I'm going to have to put you down with your squad. I cant see a good LZ around here, so you'll have to rope down"

Nodding your affirmative, the pilot quickly flares off his speed and hovers a full fifty feet above the deck.
