You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

You shift uncomfortably in your chair alongside Laika, who looks like she's trying to meld into her chair. Both of you are under the piercing gaze of both Colonels Kesley and Anderson, as they quietly shift their focus from a set of papers to Laika, indicating this "emergency meeting" was focused around her.

"So, can I please ask what this is about?" You speak up, finally breaking the silence.

"We have a few questions for Laika, regarding the program that she was from." Kelsey grunts. "Laika, were you the only pilot in the program that trained you?"

"U-um, yeah." Laika nodded. "It was just me."

"Are you absolutely sure?" Anderson narrows his eyes. "You never saw any other pilots? No mention of other programs?"

"N-n-no!" Laika squeaks, and clings to your arm.

You reassuringly grab Laika's hand and give a disapproving glare to Kesley and Anderson. Normally you wouldn't do this to superior officers but when they were on the verge of harassing Laika to tears, well, things changed.

"Can you tell me what the hell is going on?" You say calmly but sternly.

"Both Kelsey and Anderson look at each other. Anderson sighs and nods and Kelsey slides a folder across the desk towards you.

"I guess you have a right to know." Kelsey says with an apologetic look.

You open up the folder and see that it's full of pictures. Hazy, blurry, and poor quality. However, you were still able to discern what they were focusing on. The image of Frank Bishop being half carried from his fighter. Just behind him, two young girls in flightsuits surrounded by MPs. In the background, you could see a pair of Fandances sitting on the tarmac alongside Frank's Wyvern.

"Is this...?"

"It was all over the news networks. Apparently the Navy managed to capture two more Fandance pilots. Young witches with VDNI implants, just like Laika." Anderson explains. "Now we're concerned. We thought that Laika was just a one off, a proof of concept. Now, with two more girls like her in custody, who knows how many more are out there."

"Laika, do you recognize these girls?" You ask, showing her the pictures.

"No, I don't know them at all." Laika shakes her head.

"Perhaps individual pilots are compartmentalized into multiple separate programs." Kelsey suggests. "It would make sense for a project like this."

"Possibly." Anderson sighs. "Looks like we're back to square one."

"Okay, are we done now?" You ask, a bit agitated now.

"Not quite." Kelsey shakes his head. "There's another matter that concerns Laika. She'll need to be temporarily transferred back to the States."

"What, why?" You blink in surprise.

"Because we've received word from the Navy that Frank Bishop has opted to have VDNI installed. Now, there currently only exists one person in the entire US armed forces that has practical and actual experience with the use of VDNI..."

"Of course." You sigh.

"Well, if it's for that reason, I suppose I can't complain." You sigh. "Though I do hope you're not sending her alone."

"Of course not." Kelsey shakes his head. "We'll also be sending Sokolov and his technical team over to assist in training and familiarization. Anderson here will also be providing some of his best men as escort."

"I'm sure you're acquainted with Spectre Team." Anderson grins.

"Obviously." You roll your eyes. They were a bunch of weirdos, but they were competent weirdos.

"If you're not happy with that, we would allow you to send one of your squadron along with her to provide support." Kesley says.

"Obviously, it can't be you." Anderson adds in. "Your operations in Asia are too critical to risk you leaving."

You pause to think about this. You could immediately eliminate your foreign witches. You doubted Nungesser, Jetstream, and Euclid would be too welcome at an American top secret research base. Ghost might be good since she's also SpecOps and used to working with experimental equipment, but you figured she'd much rather stay with Rex. Janice would provide a good mother figure, but you'd be sending away your most dependable XO for who knows how long. Red was good in a fight and got along well with Laika as well, but again, she was a pretty important member of your squad. Tarin was... well... Tarin. Rex was also a possible candidate. Maybe it'd do him good to see his brother again.

"Of course." Kelsey stands up and nods as you before leaving, calmly pushing Laika out the door into the hall where Janice is waiting.

"Now, let's get this whole KPA attack sorted out." Anderson says flatly. "I read your report. Very dramatic stuff."

"It was just like any other mission." You shrug.

"So you say." Anderson grins.

"I heard the attacks weren't just in Seoul."

"They weren't." Anderson shakes his head. "They hit nearly ever major city on the peninsula. Bad news is they caused a hell of a lot of damage. The good news is that we've practically eliminated the KPA as a viable fighting force."

"I get the feeling that's not what the public is focusing on."

"What does that mean for us?" You ask with concern.

"Nothing in the short term, but it can have big implications down the line." Anderson frowns. "I'm not just talking about invasions into mainland China, but a rollback on Korean independence. The entire country is already under lockdown due to the attacks, and there are already people saying that it should stay that way."

"You don't suppose that these same people are part of that shadow group you mentioned to me?" You raise an eyebrow.

"There's a very high likelihood." Anderson grunts. "It's gotten bad enough that it's attracted the interest of.... certain parties."

"I am not liking the sound of this." You fornw.

"And you shouldn't. They don't get involved unless things are really bad." Anderson says sadly. "You want to stay out of this, now's the chance. Anything else I say is just going to get you in deeper."

"Lay it to me straight, sir." You say grimly.

"All right." Anderson's eyes dart around as if trying to look for unseen spies."The Agency is starting to mobilize assets to root out this shadow group."

"But why?" You ask.

"A number of reasons, but the biggest one is that the same guys who want to keep Korea in their grip generally are the same guys who oppose closer relations with the United States. These are hardcore conservative nationalist types. Getting rid of them benefits both us and Korea."

"Can't we just go to the Emperor about this?" You ask. "I assume at this point you've got enough evidence to implicate them?"

"And what can he do?" Anderson sighs. "He may be the overall ruler of Japan, but even his power has limits. The royal families directly under him as well as the high ranking ministers all wield their own influence, and at the end of the day, they're all still ultimately loyal to the Emperor, differing views or not. Do you realize how politically damaging it would be if he were to start a witch hunt on his own supporters?"

That did make a troubling amount of sense.

"Okay, so we're a delivery service." You sigh. "Who, when, and where?"

"That's yet to be decided." Anderson replies. "I'll tell the Agency that you're on board. They'll handle the rest."

"Why can't we covertly approach the Emperor about this?" You ask. "He seems to already have an idea that there are forces working against him. He told me so personally."

"That's still a big risk." Anderson sighs. "Knowledge and capacity to act are two very different things. You can talk to him, but I highly discourage mentioning anything about the Agency's involvement, since you'll risk endangering the entire operation."

"I understand." You sigh. If Anderson wasn't willing to talk to the Emperor, you guess it was a task left up to you. "Anyways, I'll take you up on that offer for R&R."

"Have a good one, Captain." Anderson nods as you leave.

Outside the office, you see Janice and Laika patiently waiting for you.

"Rough meeting?" Janice asks, with a smile.

"Extremely. I'll tell you about it later." You sigh. "Right now I just want some rest."

"Hm. Well if that's the case we can always go down to the beach for a bit!" Janice beams. "It's been forever since we went, and I'm sure Laika would love it, too!"

"The beach?" Laika's eyes widen. "Really?!"

"Of course, especially since you're being sent to China Lake after this." Janice nods. "Nothing but empty desert. It's a rather dreary place."

"Yay! Beach!" Laika says happily.

"Hm perhaps we should invite the others along?" Janice suggests.

It has more to do with the lighting in the room your in. Shitty phone camera made the exact shade that means gold.white in shade, or blue/black in sunlight. It's up to the brain to make the call, so it goes with the one that makes the most sense considering the current lighting. In a shadowy room lit by sunlight? brain usually sees it as gold/white. In an artificially lit/completely dark room? Black/blue. Tl;dr brain changes color based on lighting.
>>
>>38414784
it's a trick. The rods and cones in your eyes detect all light filtering in, not just what you're looking at. In the right light, it looks white and gold. In the right light, it looks blue and black. It is both, either, and neither, because whoever took that photo is shit at handling backlighting, which results in light saturation, making the photo inaccurate at displaying the right colors.

"Sure, the more the merrier." You shrug.

"Excellent!" Janice smiles. "I'll let the others know right away!"

---

On second thought, maybe you should have just kept it private, as you were not getting any of the peace and quiet you thought you would. Then again, you probably should have predicted this. Like last time, the beach here was closed off to the public, largely reserved for base personnel. That meant the area was relatively secluded and open, though you could see a few other groups playing around int he sand and water. However, your attention was focused squarely on your own group.

Out in the water, Janice was helping Laika learn how to swim. Apparently, it had never occurred to her Russian handlers to make the effort, perhaps since they thought it would be pointless trying to teach a girl with no legs.

Red and Jetstream, of course, were sparring again in the sand, using wooden swords. The wooden THUNKS alternating with the waves.

Ghost and Euclid were in an intense splash fight in the water, with Rex naturally caught in the middle.

Bullseye, as always, was getting smothered by Nungesser.

And... Tarin was off in deeper waters, apparently doing some diving or something.

You decide now is a good time to go rescue Rex from his predicament. Either way, you needed to talk to him about Laika, anyways.

"All right, girls, I gotta borrow Rex for a bit." You say, pulling him clear from Ghost and Euclid's splash fight.

"AAAAAWWWWWWW." Both witches whine.

"Commanding officer." You remind them. "Don't worry, I won't keep him for long. Maybe you two can help Laika swim. I'm sure she'd appreciate the effort."

You then lead Rex a little bit away from the main action so you can talk undisturbed.

"What's this about, sir?" Rex asks.

"I'm just letting you know that I'm arranging you to be transferred back to the States temporarily."

"Forced leave?" He raises an eyebrow.

"Protection duty." You clarify. "Laika's being sent back because apparently your brother Frank decided to get implants similar to hers, so they need someone to guide him through it."

"I see." He nods a bit. "So you want to make sure she doesn't run into any trouble?"

"She doesn't leave your sight. Got it?"

"Crystal." Rex affirms.

"Excited to see your brother again?" You ask.

"A bit. I guess we can catch up." Rex nods. "He seems to have quite a lot of adventures these days."

"Anyways, just thought I'd let you know. You might want to get some extra time in with Ghost before you leave."

"Thanks for the heads up." Rex then walks off, sneak up behind Ghost and picking her up from behind and starts carrying her off. Odd guy, that Rex was.

"Okay, time to show you what I can do!" Laika exclaims.

---

"To be fair, you did manage to get a good distance before you went under." You laugh lightly as you hold a pouting Laika up by the shoulders. "Guess you need a bit more practice!"

"Hmph." Laika pouts. "I'll be the best swimmer! Even without legs!"

"I'm sure you will be." You chuckle as you slip Laika's floaties back on.

"Hey, hey!" Laika points out to the ocean. "Can we go see what Tarin is doing? Can we? Can we?"

"I don't think that's a good idea, Laika." You frown. "Swimming in the shallows is one thing, but open ocean? Not until you've got a lot more experience."

"Awwww." Laika pouts once again.

"Don't worry. Once you get back I'll train you every day! Then mean old Will here won't have anything to say!" Janice says encouragingly.

"Hey, why are you making ME out to be the bad guy here?" You gasp.

"Better you than me!" Janice smiles.

"Traitor." You mumble.

"Am I interrupting something?"

You turn to see Tarin standing behind you, a dead shark draped across her shoulders. You just stare blankly at Tarin.

"Is there a problem, sir?" Tarin blinks, apparently confused at your reaction.

"You brought back the shark." You say. "A SHARK."

"I thought we could use something a bit more exotic for dinner." Tarin says.

"Mmmmm, maybe a little TOO exotic." Janice laughs nervously. "I'm afraid I don't have much experience with shark."

"Well, I also got these." Tarin holds up a genuine bluefin tuna.

"Oh, well that's much easier!" Janice smiles.

"Bleh! Looks gross!" Laika sticks her tongue out.

"Now Laika, you need to have an open mind when it comes to food!" Janice scolds the girl. "Have you even tried tuna yet?"

"...no." Laika admits.

"See? There's a first time for everything!"

Oh man, I hope they cook up that shark too. If you cook them right, they taste great! Shark stakes are awesome.

"How about I help you out?" You offer.

"Sure." Tarin nods and tosses the bluefin at you. You manage to catch it, but it's a lot bigger and heavier than you thought it would be. Plus it felt cold and slimy against your bare chest. Tarin however keeps hold on the shark.

"Hey, Janice, maybe you should consult with Jetstream and Euclid about fish recipes? They might have some tips for it."

"Good idea!" Janice nods.

You and Tarin then begin to head to one of the Humvees you've borrowed. In the back, Tarin had wisely stashed away some coolers full of ice for this very moment. You manage to cram the shark and bluefin into two separate coolers, and Tarin slams them closed.

"So, Captain, I heard you were sending Rex and Laika to the States." She says.

"That's right." You say, wondering briefly how she knew, and then remember it's because she's Tarin. "Something caught your interest?"

"Not really." Tarin shakes her head. "Seemed odd that you would let Laika go like that."

"Well, it's only temporary, and I'm sure the order came from way above me and Kesley, and probably even General Granger's heads." You sigh. "Can't be helped."

"I'm sure." Tarin nods. "I also understand Anderson roped you into doing wetwork?"

"Who told you that?" You blink in surprise.

"Anderson did. He actually wanted to recruit me directly in case you turned him down."

"Did he, now?"

"He's just being cautious. You know how he is." Tarin points out. "If you need me to do the deed, you can just order me to, and I'll do it, no questions asked."

>It won't have to come to that.
>Thanks, Tarin.

"It won't have to come to that." You assure her, but smile anyways. "But thanks. It's nice to know you've got my back."

Tarin nods almost imperceptibly and looks up.

"Looks like it's going to get dark soon." She points out.

Sure enough, the sun was starting to get pretty low, and you could see the rest of your squad beginning to pack up and converge back on the vehicles.

"Well, it was good to have a day to unwind." You nod. "But I'm guessing it's going to be back to business as usual tomorrow."

"Of course." Tarin nods.

"Captain!" Janice waves as she walks up, carrying Laika on her back. "Jetstream and Euclid are going to show me how to make some excellent tuna rolls! We're having sushi tonight!"

"But I want buuuuuurgers!" Laika whines.

"You can't eat hamburgers all the time, Laika." You shake your head. "All that fat is just going to straight to your le- I mean- you're gonna get fat!"

Everybody has a good chuckle at your slip up, but Laika, still unfamiliar with American figures of speech, just looks plain confused.

Shit, you were really going to miss her. You hope Rex, Frank, and Merlin would take good care of her...

Prolly following Sei's dad around as International Gunpla Judges/Referees. Either that or training the new breed of Char Custom Ball users.

Or become a figure similar to Rmaba Ral?

Though I imagine he gained notoriety due to the final newspaper shot
>>
>>38418517
Nah, he probably cleared it up afterwards.

>>38416651
Also merc, on the subject of Heist and GBFQ, why not INTERNATIONAL GUNPLA JUDGE QUEST, where we chase down the Gunpla Mob before they steal the artificial Arista crystal?
>>
>>38418796
Maybe but I think that still might have stuck around, especially if it was in print.
>>
>>38418827
Well, if we consider Merc will pick up the story in terms of Try, seven years will just turn it into an unfortunate joke if anything.

Kind of like for it to be a though partially I may want to be in a different character other then Jack if only to keep that relationship ambiguous

Then again compared to other series that war was very tame

We'll just have to wait and see what Merc cooks up then, comrade spacenoid.
