You are Reinhold Eschenwald, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

One of many issues that you're forced to deal with at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Leopold Massenet is dead, along with his co-conspirators in this entire kidnapping plot (at least, you're pretty sure that they are). And with Luciana rescued and Sir Vincent retrieved, and the capitol city of Ancellotta completely devastated, you and your friends are finally headed back home.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a ferocious TIGER!
>Strong and fearless, tigers are the only predators known to feed on lesser dragons.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend and fierce protector!
>But while tigers truly are impressive, they still fall short of being considered as people.

"Is that all of them!?" Nicolette calls out to her nearest subordinate.
"I... I hope so..." a battle-weary Guard says while darting his eyes in all directions in anticipation of another wave of mercenaries.

This is the first time that many of these men have seen actual battle... and if not for that trip to Marconetti a month ago, Nicolette would likely be every bit as panicked as the men under her command.

"Pierre, take a couple able-bodied men and get whatever wounded you can back to the castle!" Nicolette barks out.
"B- but what about you, Captain!?" her subordinate asks, worried for her safety.
"I'll try and pick off anyone left until Arnaud gets here, now GO!"
"Y- yes sir!"

While the others carry out her orders, Nicolette and a small squad of remaining guards advances deeper into the forest. While her father said that he and the King would take care of things themselves, it became clear that the sheer numbers were too much for them to be able to reliably handle on their own. Even if they could handle the brunt of the attacks (and she has full confidence that they can), there's still the question of stragglers getting through to the castle itself. And with Melanie and Elena and all the other people who she loves in direct danger, there's no way she could just stand back and wait.

After all, the Royal Guard's duty is to protect the castle from all threats.

I'd love a snapshot of how a few groups are dealing with things, namely Sylvie, Karel/Emilio and if he's learned of the attacks, Celestino since they have the biggest eotional stakes, but not at the expense of a more developed scene.

hopefully exploring how characters are dealing with things will be an option in the VN, they're really satisfying

This is a sally. Actively counterattacking to disrupt the enemy's ability to sustain their offensive. It's a very good and very effective tactic, moreso than pure defence, especially when there's combat monsters like Aquaman, Greg and Arnaud as a backstop.

It's a very smart decision.

Something along the lines of FFIX's ATE system would be beautiful (where you would occasionally get a prompt -- most optional, but some mandatory -- while you were wandering around that let you know about other scenes that were going on concurrently somewhere else in the area, and let the player either choose to eavesdrop on those, or skip them and carry on with whatever you were in the middle of) but might be a little too fiddly to implement.

That, or it'd come off as unnecessary unless there was a broad implementation. It worked in that game because it was happening all the time during wandering-around-town downtime, but if it only came up a handful of times it would seem arbitrary.

"CAPTAIN, I SEE TH-AAAGH!!"

With a piercing shriek, the man to Nicolette's right falls to the ground. After calling out to the others to heighten their guard, she peers out into the brush...

"Get down!" Nicolette shouts as a massive fireball races towards her and her comrades. Fortunately, her warning came in time, as it arcs just over their heads...

...but there's still the person who cast it to deal with.

"I'm going in!" Nicolette shouts. "Watch my back!"
"Captain, no!" a guard calls out. "We don't know where he's coming from!"
"Yes we do..."

Nicolette holds her free arm out to her side as she approaches the newly-charred brush. But it's not the charred part that she's interested in... rather, it's what she sees a little ways to the left of it.

A faint gleaming that's not -quite- the color of burning foliage. After an entire life spent with the kingdom's two most powerful mages, Nicolette probably knows that particular shade of red better than anyone in the Royal Guard.

Taking special care not to directly face its direction, Nicolette keeps her head straight forward while glancing to the side with her eyes...

"fireb-"
"FRAGMENT LANCER!"

Before her unseen opponent can even finish speaking the spell, Nicolette throws her magically-created lance as hard as she can in the direction of the Script that she saw earlier. She doesn't even wait to see if she hit true, launching herself right after her lance until she finds her target.

"Just what I fucking thought..." she growls as she looks at the freshly-killed mercenary's body, a long jagged piece of metal running right through his neck and into the tree that's growing behind him.

"Captain, are you alright!?" a guard calls out. "Do you need assistance?"
"No, he's dead," Nicolette shouts back. "I'm heading back n-"
"WWWWWHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!?"

Nicolette mutters every curse that she knows in rapid succession as she runs back to her men... and soon she knows exactly why they were screaming. In front of the cowering guards, Nicolette finds another mercenary... but his body is completely surrounded by a thick coating of water from which countless wriggling appendages are sprouting.

"Men, fall back!" Nicolette shouts while running to the aid of the guards under her command.

The men waste no time in scrambling behind their commander, and Nicolette makes a mental note to commend them after all this is over for actually bothering to pull their fallen comrade out of harm's way while doing this. Once their (relative) safety has been secured, Nicolette takes a good look at this latest opponent.

Ariane used to speak ill of people who used spells of this type back when she was teaching her daughter the basics of magic... though a barrier of water could easily deflect or even pull an assailant's weapons out of their hands, such spells had one glaring weakness.

And of course it had to be THAT.

"Fuck..." Nicolette growls as she backs away from the oncoming mage.
"Captain," a guard turns to her, "what if you or-"

CLANG

Seemingly having used their ally as a distraction, three mercenaries drop down from the trees and surround Nicolette and her fellow Guards. Attacking immediately, they soon find that their opponents aren't as hapless as they first seemed.

"Captain, we can handle these guys here," a guard says, "so if you can take care of the water monster guy..."
"Good work," Nicolette replies.

With the option to flee having been taken away, Nicolette takes a deep breath and readies her lance.

Given the choice between her own pride and the men under her command, there's no question as to what wins out in the end. And so, Nicolette begins to chant.

"I release my hold on thee, oh lance of the divine," Nicolette says, the glowing red Script of her spell mingling with the flying blood of the mercenaries who her men are in the midst of cutting down one by one. "I bid thee to return from whence you came, and impale my enemies against the backdrop of the heavens!"

The water-clad mercenary picks this moment to rush Nicolette and the other guards... but his own actions seal his fate. With no need to even throw her weapon this time around, Nicolette draws back and thrusts it right into the man's watery shell just as two of his tentacles dart for her arms.

"RISE THE LIGHTNING!"

Crackling electricity surges from the base of Nicolette's shoulders, flowing through her arms

and into her lance

and through the water and everything contained within, finally piercing through both the man's body and his aquatic carapace and upwards to the night sky.

Wasn't it said that Greg was in a situation very similar to this one, only he told the royal guards to stand back and impaled every single one of the invaders on their own spears around Granache Castle and was knighted for that?

And he's holding back now in the hopes that Nico can manage something similar?

He's so disappointed. If only she used a real knight's weapon.

I'd like to take the time to talk about Ancellotta, and how they compare to North Korea.

First, let's take a look at their neighbors. North Korea is next to;
>Japan, a minor power that's friends with the United States, which has the most powerful military in the world
>South Korea, their estranged sibling that also happens to be friends with the United States
>China, a major power that they are on somewhat friendly terms with but is also economical fuckbuddies with the United States

And frankly, China doesn't like North Korea. They just want to keep the place running so they don't get a flood of refugees and so they have a buffer between them and an ally of the US.

Now, let's look at Ancellotta.
>Granache, a minor power that hates them and is ruled by badasses
>Marconetti, a major power that hates them and is ruled by the most paranoid motherfucker in existence
>Perricone, a minor power that hates them
>Krassato, a presumably major power that hates them and is ruled by dragons

If I had to sum up Ancellotta's situation with an image, it'd be this one. https://i.imgur.com/AHfe3EC.jpg

"Father!!"

Running through the halls of the castle as fast as he can, Alberto finally reaches his father's office. "Father, are you in there!?"
"Alberto?" Celestino rises his desk when he sees his son approach. "What is it, is there new word concerning Luciana!?"

When he first got word from Granache that his daughter was kidnapped, it took Alberto's physically restraining him to keep him from flying off in hopes of rescuing his beloved daughter. Even now, it seems that the his younger self isn't completely gone.

And then when the letter from Leopold Massenet of all people, stating that he was the one responsible for everything that's happened while also demanding an exorbitant amount of money in exchange for her safe return as well as the release of Clemens Daimler...

...it took Benedetta's intervention from keeping Alberto from rushing down to the dungeon and murdering that traitor himself. As much as she loathes her half-sister, she loathes the idea of her brother making a mistake that he'd regret for the rest of his life even more.

And ever since that point, things have been exceedingly tense in the castle.

"Yes, right here!" Alberto says, holding up a piece of paper that Celestino can tell was originally folded up into some sort of complicated shape. "It's a letter from Luciana!"
"What!?"

Running around the desk that's sitting in between him and his son, Celestino snatches the letter from his son's hand once he's within arm's reach.

"It's her handwriting..." Celestino gasps as he skims over the letter.
"Yes, it is," Alberto nods while smiling ear to ear. "Now look at what it actually -says-."
"Ah- yes, of course."

And so, Celestino begins reading.

"Dear Father, Alberto and everyone else at home, I am happy to inform you that Leopold Massenet is dead," the letter reads.
"That traitorous bastard is... what!?" Celestino stares at the paper. "How!?"
"Keep reading," Alberto replies, laughing at his father's uncharacteristic lack of composure.

Luci is fairly skilled at espionage and loyal to her family.

"Reinhold actually..." Celestino trails off.
"After they fought their way into the stronghold where I was being held, I personally watched Reinhold shatter that treacherous louse into bits. I truly wish that you could have been there to see it, for my beloved handled himself during that battle in a manner befitting one who was trained by Uncle Guillaume."
"Did you get to the part about Reinhold yet?" Alberto asks.

"On an unrelated note, Ancellotta's capitol city is in the midst of being destroyed by some sort of creature at the time that I am writing this letter," it reads. It doesn't appear that their military has any hope of stopping its rampage before at least half of the city is damaged beyond repair, so now may be an opportune time to take suitable action. Not that I am trying to tell you to do anything in particular, of course."
"Of course not..." Celestino says with a wry smile.
"I would like to write more, but I suspect that we;ll be making our way to Granache soon. Please take care, and I look forward to the day that I am able to return home. Love, Luciana Violetta di Marconetti."

With a satisfied smile on his face, Celestino turns to his eldest son.

"Alberto, fetch me some scouts," he says. "Not that I don't trust Luciana's words, but I'd like to get confirmation that she's safe before we move in."
"I'll be right on it," Alberto replies. "Should I bring them up here to your office?"

Pleasantly surprised, Celestino flips his daughter's letter over and reads the short sentence written therein.

"If at all possible, I would appreciate it if you left Clemens Daimler alive until I get back home to the castle," it reads. "I would like to speak to him of his brother's last moments before his own life comes to an end."

"Eh?" Celestino raises an eyebrow upon seeing his son return almost immediately after walking out the door. "Did you forget something?"
"Er..." Alberto fumbles with a piece of paper in his hands, "We got another note."
"Luciana sent another one?" he asks as he gets back up from his seat.
"No," his son shakes his head, "this one's from Reinhold."

After flattening the paper out some, Alberto hands it to his father.

"I wonder what he has to say..." Celestino mumbles to himself. "Wouldn't surprise me if it's a formal request for Luciana's hand in marriage."
"This is Reinhold Eschenwald," the note reads. "We've rescued Luciana and are on the way back to Granache. Leopold Massenet is dead, and Luciana herself struck the final blow. In addition, Sir Vincent has destroyed a large portion of Ancellotta's capitol city."

"Father, remember that she dispatched several assassins on her own prior to the more flagrant attack," Alberto replies, placing a hand on his father's shoulder. "She takes after you more than you think. And judging from this, she likely wants to rub it in to Daimler when she gets home that she's the one who killed his brother."
"I can't believe..." he sighs. "And this says that VINCENT is the one who destroyed the Ancellottan capital city..."

>>

Maybe. But bear in mind Reinhold probably should resign at some point soon to go adventuring with his fiancée so they get to live her dreams before coming back to settle down somewhere.

Turning down a knight's position in Nico's favour would be a good way to do that.

That seems a little patronizing she would probably try to kick Reins ass if he did that.
>>
>>38417398
>>38417416
The part about running off to cut off the head of the operation, maybe.

The resigning bit is obviously very absurd, but it still stands that the determining factor for who went on the high-profile mission being "who was the most indignant and had the fewest other outstanding commitments" is kind of silly.

>>38417455
It was already explained that knighthoods in Granache more or less come down to Thierri's whim on an individual basis, not that there are slots to fill that he puts the current most-qualified person into.
>>
>>38417373
How about we just say nothing and accept gratefully it rather than being dramatic about it like a literal retard??

While the thought certainly is flattering, you'd feel kind of guilty if you ended up getting knighted over this while Nicolette's still busy trying to work towards her goal. After all, that's HER life's dream, not yours...

"Reinhold?" Luciana taps you on the shoulder.
"Y- yes!?" you blurt out.
"What would you like to do?"
"Uh... what?"
"Fly back to the castle or run there or have me turn into something smaller and bring all of you there that way," Sir Vincent says. "As the leader of this here rescue mission, I think it's best to leave the choice as to how to end it up to you."

Seeing Luciana like this so so SO makes you want to keep pushing harder until she just breaks down into an adorable pile of embarrassment... but then you remember that you're standing inside a guy's head right now and there are several other people watching.

Such a shame, too... you have no idea when you'll get another chance to get her like this.

"Okay, that's fine," you shrug. "You can if you really want to that badly."
"...thank you..." Luciana replies while cutely blushing.
"So how are we going to do this?"
"Well, umm..."

Luciana walks over to you, wraps her arms tightly around you, and tries to pick you up.

"Nngh!" she strains... but you only rise by about an inch before she drops you back onto your feet. "Damn it..."

Inaba watches on in utter confusion as Luciana tries to lift you in her arms, hold under your shoulders, and countless other ways to hold you up, but none of them work at all since her arms are too weak. And while the sensation of her breasts pressing against your back certainly is nice and all, you're kind of wasting time here.

"Damn it..." Luciana mumbles while puffing out her cheeks just like Elena does when she gets frustrated.
"Er..." Monique clears his throat. You turn to him, and his face is bright red. "...maybe you're just going about this the wrong way?"
"Obviously so," Luciana sighs.
"Well Archmage Sucher made that building collapse by making it heavier, maybe be could do the reverse to Reinhold?"
"Of course!"

Elated, Luciana runs over to Niklaus and takes both of his hands in hers.

"Mr. Archmage, you can do that, right?" Luciana asks while fidgeting like crazy.
"...what, you mean decrease the pull of gravity on a singular object?" Niklaus shrugs. "That's but child's play for one such as myself."

"Oh!" Luciana immediately frees his hands and steps away from him. "Sorry, I just..."
"It's fine," Niklaus sighs. "Anything to get you off of me."

With an annoyed groan, Niklaus walks over to you and taps you on the back.

"Quartermasster," Niklaus says as Script appears and disappears in an instant.

And suddenly, you feel like you're light enough to fly home yourself.

"There, that should do it," Niklaus says. "And now that that's done with, I think we ought to stop wasting time here."
"Er, yes," Luciana replies, running over to you. "So it worked?"
"Feels like it," you reply.
"Well there's only one way to test it out..."

Smiling awkwardly, Luciana bends down slightly and scoops you over, throwing off your sense of balance. You find yourself falling backwards... but then you stop once you're in her arms.

"Oh my!" Luciana giggles. "I don't think you weigh any more than Elena does now!"
"Well I'll be..." you mutter, a bit flustered to be, well... -princess carried- by Luciana like this.

How different would reinhold's life be if volker went to the turkey school of fighting, and reinhold inherited a big dumb fightan cape?
Interlewd when?
How WOULD nicollete if we got knighted of 6 months of service, compared to her several years?
Especially considering we took monique with us over her.
Are we friends with monique yet? Or at least friendly rivals?
What does setsuranka think of our sword? What does she think of Vincent?
When the quest is over, are you gonna edit it all up and send it to a publisher for shits, giggles, and possibly profit?
>>
>>38418611
So how badly hurt is Luci going to get hurt when we crash, and how badly is king Shadowrun gonna hurt us when he learns why we crashed?
>>

Thanks for running.

>>38418611

Is there a way for an unbound elemental to feed off the mana of another person, a la sealed kings? (Willing or unwilling)

>Arch, what is inaba, setsuranka, monique and takemaru thinking right now? And Niklaus too, I guess, though I'm sure he's mostly thinking "casuals cant even into gravity spells. Fucking reinhouser, if he wasn't one of my only friends, I wouldn't even be here."
Inaba: "these two weird."
takamaru: "oh dear god why do they have to do these things in front of ME!?"
monique: "i should not be watching this i should not be watching this"
niklaus: "meh"
vincent: "haha she wants to carry reinhold. that's cute"

>How different would reinhold's life be if volker went to the turkey school of fighting, and reinhold inherited a big dumb fightan cape?
Completely different.

>Interlewd when?
Never.

>How WOULD nicollete if we got knighted of 6 months of service, compared to her several years?
A hint of jealousy but she's primarily be happy that her bro got the title.

>Especially considering we took monique with us over her
you could have found nicolette and taken her instead

>Are we friends with monique yet? Or at least friendly rivals?
You should be able to tell through context.

>What does setsuranka think of our sword?
She doesn't think anything of it.

>What does she think of Vincent?
She thinks he's exceedingly strange.

>When the quest is over, are you gonna edit it all up and send it to a publisher for shits, giggles, and possibly profit?
I would never be picked up by any publisher because I suck. Also my prose is terrible.
all edits go towards the game version

>So how badly hurt is Luci going to get hurt when we crash, and how badly is king Shadowrun gonna hurt us when he learns why we crashed?
Really? How evil do you think I am?

>Since Luciana is Celestino's favorite daughter will that make her kids the favorite grandchildren by default?
It doesn't work that way.

>Is there a way for an unbound elemental to feed off the mana of another person, a la sealed kings? (Willing or unwilling)
Yes.

And now I sleep. Thanks for playing!

Quest dropped.

>Also my prose is terrible.
Just get rid of all the redudancies and all the "modern" words and phrases.
>>
>>38418970
Why now, and not the 5 million other times it has been stated?
>>
>>38418975
That would make things a whole lot better, it's kind of weird to read modern words and such it feels out of place a little too casual.
>>
>>38419003
>a little too casual
C'mon, anon, cut that out.

>Also my prose is terrible.
Your daily reminder that that was one of the major criticisms leveled at the 50 Shades of Gray series, and look at how well it sold.
