Harpies of alight across the battlements-
Nervous energy has infused the night as more reports quite literally fly in.

Numbers aren't something you have access to, outside of a general figure of 'lots'.

Which is why you are standing atop a wall you built in no time at all, surrounded by antsy adventurers and preparing to receive an assault. Oakring certainly isn't a place you felt would come under siege.

But here you are.

Someone to your left mutters beneath their breath, though just loud enough.
"Wish they'd jus' do somethin' already."
The sentiment is echoed down the line of stone, men and women hoisting blades and bows, working themselves up to what's to come.

The wolves sit just out of firelight, eyes glimmering in the brush beyond the village's clearing.
Whether they're waiting for something or someone, or are just confused about the sudden appearance of a rather sizeable wall-
The growing tension in the air isn't something you care for.

>Find someone important. What happens next?
>These are wolves. Sheszka is a wolf. Maybe she can tell you something?
>Calm down. Talk to someone. You're safe where you are.

I've been thinking by the way (probably a bad thing), but industrial grade silk does open up quite a few options for us, especially if we take advantage of the many benefits of siege engineering. Us mastering things such as the rope and pully system would put us at a massive advantage, plus it would allow us to do stupid things like construct ballistas, construction equipment (lel we can just use magic), and trebuchets to effectively instill terror and kick ass without having to even use a drop of magic. Also silk makes for a nice fire and arrow resistant layer and can be used for relatively tough armor if woven right. (the huns abused the hell out of silk as a form of under armor).

Alternatively, seeing as we have things like sleeping dusts, paralysis dusts, and healing dusts, we have most of the components for modern surgical set up. The others being sterile equipment and actual knowledge of human anatomy (we definitely don't know the last thing in depth enough to take advantage of it, plus lel magic also deals with most issues surgery would be needed for).
>>
>>38445821
You just reminded me, somehow. Should we get shape-shifting of some kind? assuming it's possible, it may be practical to fit through smaller doors without redesigning the building

>>38446033

>>
>>38446045
Well, its decided then, we bash through walls shouting "OH YEAH" and make everyone think we are insane because nobody gets the reference...

However, anyone who is laughing clearly went through the same circumstances as us and we should probably confront. (literally nobody knows we have memories of a past life and we don't know if anyone else does either, we'd be considered insane if we brought it up anyway)
>>
>>38446004
>should we
Probably. It's useful.

You gnaw at a finger as you pore over what you know.

It doesn't take you very long.

There's a pile of wolves in the woods, of indeterminate number.
There's a pile of adventurers on the wall, accompanied by a smaller pile of Harpies.
You could count those, but you;re not going to because it really doesn't matter.

The arachne had that flare for dealing with people in the forest, didn't they?
The necromancer at the ruins.
Do the harpies have the same? Or is this something else, because it's wolves?
This is a pain. You're half tempted to try and find Lia in all this mess.

Of course, there's no guarantee that she's anywhere near the ground at the present moment.
Informant number two, then.

"Sheszka?"
Ears perk up in response to your voice, and the young wolf turns to you with a careful sort of expression on her face.
"Do not worry, yes? This has nothing to do with you."

Her shoulders slump with relief, and you take the opportunity to comb her hair back from her eyes.
You have no idea how she does it, to be honest. Your own drives you nuts, and Sheszka has more.

No, that doesn't matter right now. Wolf invasion.
"Can you tell me anything about the wolves? Why would they cross the river? I thought they fought the other packs, yes?"
She nods, her hair flopping right back into her face.

"Maybe- Maybe they think the harpies are weak? Or they were chased?"
"Driven out from wherever... Wolves fight over land, yes? For food?"
"Mmm. And to show strength. And because they don't like other packs. And sometimes because-"
She keeps going listing grudges and arguments and gods know what else.

All in all, not that much information.
You need something solid.

Having Shezka with us as a subordinate shows we are quite dominant, and we can hopefully work out what the hells going on, if they were pushed out we can identify by what, possibly work out a way to deal with all of this without a great many deaths, and then kick whatever is responsible for this's ass. If its just a raid we can show our strength via harpy bombing squads and resolve it like that.
>>
>>38446128
>Get a flag or something. Head out and talk.
Maybe we can resolve this peacefully if we can talk to them.

Failing that, maybe we can challenge the Alpha for dominance and resolve this with only a single death.

Let's be frank, if it came to it, we ~could~ just kill most of them and drive the rest off. We're kind of stupidly over powered.

So we just need to hope they accept one of the better options before we're reduced to that.

From what we've seen, they've yet to attack and they are currently either sizing us up (possible) or they are waiting on our move first, if its the latter its likely they are not confident they can best us, which is usually a situation they flat out avoid as completely insane.

I think Nin might be reincarnated too, and just better at pretending.
There are a lot of parralels between her and Lyra in how they differ from the norml members of their species.

E. They heard about this cool new pack that had an arachne for an alpha and are looking to join up

>>
>>38446735
She was said to differ a lot from other moths, actually. Being much more adventerous.
The trip to the ruins was her idea too.

A big difference drawn between Lyra and her sisters, even Aria, is that Lyra lacks the instincts that would normally have made her flee the storm wolf in the beginning.

Then she seems to be the only one of our young friends who gets all the jokes and references Lyra makes they are too young to know about, sure she could have gotten all that from books, but she isn't really 'that' old and I'm not sure the moths would have that many books that inform about topics like that.
>>
>>38446799
Coffee or some probably significantly less appetizing version of it is probably a thing, granted there are probably dozens of stimulant plants that can substitute it.

Also yeah what >>38446900 said, we should try to find some point to bring it up subtly. However, I suspect much of the rest of our group is relatively ""normal"" for example, other than deciding to follow us around, Jin seems pretty normal. Also shezka has given no sign shes anything but normal, and that lamia just thinks were weird.

>>38446900

I'm gonna call bullshit on that claim until you provide that qoute, because the only thing he has ever said in regards to reincarnation is that it happens a t birth, and he confirmed Lyra(rather Sara) was murdered.
>>
>>38446754
Being reincarnated with our memories is like knowing thousands of stupid in-jokes that no one but us will ever get.

I still like to think that Lyra thinks up stupid anime jokes whenever something even remotely similar to any anime she's watched happens. Not actually saying them out loud of course, far to conscientious to do that.
>>
>>38446994

In the very first few threads he basically said "I have no interests nor any plans to have anyone besides Lyra be a reincarnate."

>>38447040

Aria isn't that different from Lyra, hell, if Lyra wasn't a vessel for our collective stupidity SHE even AS a Reincarnate would have run from the wolf that shot fucking LIGHTNING at her.

It's a fucking stupid base for your theory of Nin being a reincarnate because she is an adventurous child instead of the meek frail things the rest of her race are known as.
>>
Nin get off the fucking board, we know you're not a reincarnate.

He also mentioned that if it DID happen, it wouldn't happen until after we left the forest.

Stop being such a douchebag about your personal theories.
>>
>>38447142

Fairly certain the reason we were Reincarnated to begin with was a combination REQM being faithful to the core inspiration, and a way for us to use meta knowledge.
>>
>>38447102
>if Lyra wasn't a vessel for our collective stupidity SHE even AS a Reincarnate would have run from the wolf that shot fucking LIGHTNING at her

How would you know? We have no indication about that at all.

Eyes, glowing in the torchlight, begin to cluster near the centre of the pack.
A lone wolf steps forth- in an actual wolf form, though you imagine most wolves aren't nearly so large as-
No, wait. They probably are, aren't they?

The forest might be warping your perceptions a little. What will you do if the elflands has bears, but they're only a few feet tall or something?

You push your scatterbrained thoughts to the back of your mind, and focus your attention on the wolf.
It steps properly into the firelight, though still distant from your walls, and shifts- Fur and paws and pelt giving way to a tall man, heavily scarred and muscled. His arms and legs are coated in a pitch black fur, opposite your own companion's. His ears stand tall, though one is torn, holes gaping in the shape.

No, I'm a different anon that the one you were talking to.

I'm just saying that your entire post there was fucking stupid.

And Lyra "did" have some amount of character to her, I faintly recall her having distant family problems, her circle of friends was very tight-knit but still had some apparent distance between them, and someone apparently didn't like her enough to push her in front of a train.
>>
>>38447424
>You immediately called me a douche for pointing out that the QM said it probably won't happen
Okay, first of all, there are several people in this conversation. Second of all no one called the quote provider a douche, they called the people who had been hostile about it before douchebags, I quote
> and people flat out saying no are being condescending douchebags about it
Because yes, they had been condescending douchebags about it with lines like
>Fuckin' Drop it.
Is being a condescending douchebag.

So your hostility is completly unwarranted, as is your claim anyone was hostile aginst you until you started being.
>>
>>38447536
First of all, there are several people in the conversation.

My first entry into it was direct quotes from the QM after you guys asked for them.

And then you called anyone who disagreed with you, me included, a douchebag.

You fuckin' started it, you cunt.
>>
>>38447530
>And Lyra "did" have some amount of character to her
Nothing of which made her fighting the wolf OOC.
So comparing it to killing our family is rather silyl comparison.
>>
>>38447560
>And then you called anyone who disagreed with you, me included, a douchebag.
Except I didn't,a nd the anon who wrote said quote, specifically called out the people that flat out said no, because they they had been condescending douchebags about it.
I don't see how and why you retroactively apply this to anyone who disagreed with me, even though that was never who was adressed.

So you are just insulted because you wanted to be, becaus no one had adressed you.

Fuck you, ya whining baby. I woulda told you flat out no if I wasn't busy sandbagging you to begin with, and I only got into the conversation to drop the quote you guys were acting like didn't exist.

And then you had the fucking gall to interperet that in the opposite manner of what it meant for the sake of having more argument and more bitching.

Ya fuckin' douchebag.

>>38447603

>>
>>38447568

For a stereotypical IT Videogame nerd with like-minded friends going camping could be considered OOC.

>>
>>38447621
>And then you had the fucking gall to interperet that in the opposite manner of what it meant for the sake of having more argument and more bitching.
First of all, I didn't. Second of all, you didn't actually quote REQM and the actual quote went quite a bit different as a later anon actually provided it.
And it did not actually say reincarnation will not be athing or that Lyra is the only reincarnate in the story.
It said he hadn't decided on it yet.
And that was months ago.

So, you are just being a faggot about this for no particular reason except to shitpost.

It goes off of Buddhist reincarnation or something, where being a bug is lower than being a human. Fortunately, there was a mixup and our soul ended up in a world where spiders are, like, mang.
>>
>>38447887
Maybe it's part of the system that you must reincarnate into a different race. Maybe a different world too.

Part of the point being to live a different way of life, gain new experiences.

A dead centaur might get the option of human, spider or merfolk, but no centaur.
>>
>>38447823
It seems more like an upgrade than a downgrade, especially if you are born as a higher tier monster.
>>
>>38447932

The odds are far steeper than that. The odds of someone remembering their past is like millions to one.

Then you have to factor in the odds of them reincarnating into this world, when we know being reborn into other worlds is a thing.

Then it's the odds of them being born on another continent. Or just in some random town we're likely to never visit.

It depends on if we are defending something, and if our opponent uses magic.

We have earth control bullshit on top of fire control and resistance/immunity bullshit on top of the demigod of protection bullshit on top of basic mana control which is bullshit on a whole other level.

Magic users are going to have a hard time against us, especially since the effectiveness of our external mana control actually increases the more powerful the source of magic is. Even normal adventurers with magic gear would probably panic and retreat if we shouted something to the tune of "Keep fighting and I'll disenchant ALL of your magic gear! This is not an idle threat!" It's something, at least.
"I suppose we should go down, yes?"

It seems that somewhere along the yelling, one of the officers has come over.
"Are you planning on actually-"
"Yes."

"Hn. Will you be able to speak with him?"
"I am not sure, yes? I will take Sheszka with me."
He looks towards your hand, gesturing to the white-furred wolf next to you.
"Fair enough."

"Should I take someone else down with me? For the village?"
"I think most of the villagers will choose to stick to the walls."
"Alright then."

"Do you need a ladder, or?"
You chuckle all the way down the side of the wall, barely reeling it in once you reach the ground.
You can hear people muttering about spiders even from here.
It's your elf ears, undoubtedly.

You take a cautious stride towards the wolf leader, keeping your spear over your shoulder, and generally trying to look non-threatening.
Being a skull-wearing, magma-lit giant red spider, the effect is dubious, but noone flees or outright attacks.

Your shadow stretch before you, creeping out as you walk till it reaches the wolf, and the end of the circle.
You stop there- Room to see each other, out of reach. A safe sort of distance.

Sheszka is at your side, her hair, ears and tail on end as she stares down the attacker.
Jin is sitting comfortably behind you- though you can feel her feet on your shell. She's ready to take flight.
Nin you left atop the wall, because she is soft and kind of slow flying.

You drop a warm hand onto your wolf's shoulder, and she calms by inches. Not all the way, but enough that you think she can speak without gritting her teeth and growling.
"Do you recognize him?"
She's quiet a moment before she speaks.
"Yes, Alpha. His pack was far from ours. We fought once. Noone won."

You tilt your head towards her, and she settles, standing at rest. You take another step forwards.

Well, yes, just as there is always the chance his offensive abilities greatly outclass ours.

My point is that due to the very nature of Blue Mages they are not going to have nearly as many varied and intruiging defensive skills, because there are no convenient and weird RPG mechanics they can tajke advantage of to get "attacked" with super rare and effective immunity buffs.

They're defensive abilities are not going to outclass a dedicated tank with party support of roughly equivalent level adventurers, so it's less a case of "Blue Mages are all hax and cannot be defeated!!1!" and more of "If he's strong enough to tank your high level attacks in spite of being caster, he's likely going to slaughter you regardless of what type of mage he is."

>>38449517
And if they are cannibal goblins that gain the abilities of everything they eat, get a free pass on anything horrible they do, come out of battles they themselves proclaimed as tough with zero losses in spite of fighting against hundreds of enemies with a force largely consistent of goblins and hobgoblins and are called Admiral TurboSue than we should also have maximum panic because REQM has clearly gone insane and this quest turned to shit.

So how about we stop hyping intentionally unbalanced game mechanics just because we have nothing else to shitpost about right now, m'kay?
>>
>>38449788
No, they tend to rely on bullshit powers they culled from monsters to make them resistant to shit.
>>38449793
blue mages are fuckin' hax yo. Admiral turbosue is a perfect illustration of this.
>>
>>38449761

>>
>>38449788

>>
>>38449850

fuck you you fat chef looking piece of shit, I don't care how OP you are
>>
>>38449850
If you mean their normal stab, nah, it's just a regular attack. They can learn Karma though, which deals damage based on how many things the targets have slain.
>>
>>38449839
No.
Admiral turbosue is a perfect illustration of that when the author wants something to be overpowered, he can just decide that it is and, oh so very unsurprisingly, it will be.

Blue Mages are often INTENDED to be hax because the games they are in either encourage or require massive amounts of minmaxing or do not give two shits about balance or interesting challenges.

So how about we stop retardedly obsessing over the fact that if you want to make something overpowered it is ridiculously easy to do so and that if you are even slightly interested in not breaking your entire game or story it is ridiculously easy not to let blue mages devolve into that sort of shit?
>>
>>38449957
Anon, the reason mention of blue mages is PANIC is because they're acknowledged to be bullshit overpowered.
>>
>>38449971

You fold your arms in another misguided attempt to not look threatening.
And then you smile, teeth and all, and undo all of your hard work.

"Good evening, yes. I am Lyra."
No response. Tough crowd.
"Sheszka, can you translate for me?"
"I do not have that magic."
"What?"

"The- The magic. The moving magic? Where you move. But you aren't moving?"
"Teleport?"
"Yes."
"No. Translate. Just... say what I am saying, yes? But in wolf language. Please."
"Oh."
"Thank you."
"Everything you just said?"
"Just the first bit."

She barks and growls a bit.
No response.

You are running out of patience.

You can't keep your irritation off your face. The fang smile was an accident, but the near snarling as you spit out questions certainly isn't.
"Why are you not speaking, yes? Why are your here. This is the harpy's land. Why did you cross the river?"

You get a reaction with that, at least.
He glares, lips pulling back to reveal his own fangs.
That isn't scary. He isn't even venomous. Stupid wolf.

"Weak."
"Did you learn to talk just now, or are you wasting my time?"
He studiously ignores you, talking in stilted forest speech. You are going to break his face.
>>
>>38449989
"The birds do not fight. Why should we not take what we can? It is our way."
"Are you asking that, or just stating it?"

He glares again, and you match him- outmatch him- with a six eyed return.

There's a sensation of wind behind you, the barest sound of feathers- And when you turn, Lia has taken a spot on your skull opposite her daughter.
The older harpy looks supremely displeased, brows knitted across her forehead, eyes silver in the firelight. She speaks, her tone clipped and angry to match her expression.

"No. This is our land. By the pact, by wing and claw. Leave, or we will force you to."
"With Humans? Birds?"
"I am arachne, yes."

"One. You are one spider."
"One is enough."

He growls, hunching forwards as more wolves take it as a cue. Sleek shapes emerge from the woods, slinking just outside the circle of firelight. Prowling.

>>
You can feel your heartbeat start to thunder, each piece of your body clenching as you stare him down.
Your voice hisses out, punctuating your sentences with the finality of an arachne's click.
"I will not warn you again. Return, yes. You will not take this land."

Your answer is a full throated snarl- and you immediately shoot back with a hiss, sweeping your spear from your shoulders as the harpy pair behind you takes flight.
Your arms and legs spark to life, the slow shifting patterns burning white with fury, the fur atop your chitinous glows taking to its false flame.
The ground beneath each point of your legs glows ruddy red, dirt reduced to ash and glass as stone begins to bubble.

The blaze of your body lights the clearing with flickering ambiance, wolves freezing as they turn visible- one snaps straight to the attack, hurling itself at you in a cloud of fur and fangs-

There is no connection, no impact- Sheszka is there like a bolt of lightning. A split second is all it takes for her to get airborne, her form twisting into that of a wolf in the heartbeat before she bodily slams the aggressor from the air, bones audibly cracking as the first attacker is thrown down.

And that is all it takes to open the gates of war.

Wolves move like a tide, flowing from the woods towards you, towards the town- a howl taken up by dozens of voices echoing as they start to charge. The leader vanishing into the flow as the call rises.
It is answered in kind.

Harpies screech overhead, invisible in the gloom, adventurers yell and shout and scream out their warcries as their ready their weapons.
Your wolf's howl pierces the pack's, a dissonant note of fury by a lone white beast.
Your own cry is echoed by the earth beneath you, a terrible rumble of stone and grinding rock as you brace against the horde.

The biggest issue I have with his 'morals' is that the author makes no fucking attempt to keep them consistent.
The character flipflops more than a fucking fish on asphalt, changing his behaviour out of the fucking blue for no real reason at all.

Humans captured by goblins? I won't let them be raped. And Ill murder and torture other goblins to ensure it!
Elves attack? Well, it's their leaders fault. So Ill kill him. And then keep the elves as rapeslaves anyway, haha!
War against the humans? Well, now that the wars done Ill just let them all go. WHats that, elven rapeslaves? Of course you can't leave, why would you think that lol.

>>
>>38451509
The elves in the story are his allies.
It's just
His actions make no real sense at all. He basically just does whatever the fuck the author feels like writing, rather than being a character with a personality.

I love the setting. The whole 'close to an rpg' type thing is fantastic. It even shows up with adventurers- There's a group that relies on abilities rather than actual skill, and its commented how weak they are compared to actual opponents. I love the evolutions and the slow reveals of gods and destiny coming into the LN.

But fuck his super self insert.

The comic skips it all, but the LN touches on how he was fucked in the head even prior to realizing his powers, and that people were likely scared of him/ creeped out by him for the whole eating people thing. He spent most of his time drinking, etc.
The backstory has more character than the character.

There's just been a surplus of 'I was a fat loser who died' stories. Give me something else, please.

Both, though the difference tends to lie in sentience. Or self awareness. I can't remember the proper term for intelligent beings.
You can get drakes and other such monstrous lizard creatures evolving into dragons, though it doesn't prompt any sudden rushes of intelligence.
You also have born dragons, though they're ridiculously rare and absurdly powerful.

>>38451915
I am quite enjoying re: lizard.
As for evolutions for lizard people, I'm not sure. Maybe a jump to a flying lizard a la glider, then wings after that?
Anything is possible, really. Ogres turn into minotaurs, hobgoblins into vampires and ghouls (Which look completely not like hobgoblins) and so on.
