So, let's see. news.

Nothing really here, haha. Weather's done being nuts. I think. So there shouldn't be any more issues in that regard, at least till next winter.

++

Of the hospital beds you've been in, this one's one of the nicest. You're gradually regaining consciousness- The docs said they'd probably keep you under for 24 hours before taking you off the sedatives, so you're pretty sure the sun outside your window is coming up, not going down.

You crack an eye to see who the warm body on your right side is- Lilya's hair gives her away well before her features. She's tucked in under your arm, but because of the elevated position of your head and torso, you can see her without too much trouble. She and Stasya must have taken shifts.

They've both been a lot more... clingy, you suppose, is the word, since your trip to Santa's. You're not sure how they handled your surgery- your only guess is they stayed with Merlin, since she'd gone under the knife first. They'd taped you up and drawn all kinds of 'incision vectors' and crap on the back of your neck and across your upper back with a sharpie, stuck you for an IV- then parked you in a wheelchair and moved your ass to a room to wait for eight hours and some change. You'd passed the time watching cartoons. Fuck the news, Talespin is where it's at.

When they'd come to get you, they'd given you some knockout juice- and you suppose set you up for an IV sedative, since you were out like someone hitting a light switch. You woke up once- exceedingly briefly- in the ICU, post operation, but you were out again almost as soon as you'd asked where you were.

1/2
>>
Your neck and back are sore- that's to be expected, you figure, and you can kind of distantly feel the pair of unnatural lumps housed under the muscles in your back. You can't feel anything else, though, which is nice- you'd expected to have to get used to the presence of the ports. The faint, dull ache in your left elbow says there's still an IV there, and that they've been pumping you full of drugs with it.

The dregs of the sedatives in your system are still strong enough that you decide that maybe being awake right now isn't for you, and close your eyes again to go back to sleep when the door opens and, a second later, the blinds as well.

You hear her tut when she sees Lilya- you can imagine they were told not to do that. Your guess is backed up a second later when you hear Brigitte sigh. You're glad her voice is so distinctive.

“Honey chile,” she says, and you can feel her shaking Lilya lightly. The girl shifts against you- you imagine to look at the cajun witch waking her up. “You don been tol ya can't be sleepin dere. Ya might be movin, or be makin de baron move. How 'bout ya be comin' over 'eah to dis udda bed? De baron, he ain't be goin nowhere, I promise ya dat.”

2/3
>>
You can practically see Lilya's blank stare- the one that's an answer by itself.

Brigitte sighs. “Chile, I know dat de baron, he be nice ta be cozyin up to, but ya can't be dere.”

Another silence- this one shorter. “An where your sistah be?” Brigitte says- you can hear her feet moving around. She pauses. “She be in wid Samantha?”

A nod- you can feel it against your arm.

Brigitte sighs again. “You two. Dey not be goin nowhere. You listen good to maman, now. She be makin sure dey be stayin wid ya, promise. But ya be movin overe heah to dis bed while de baron be sleepin. When he wake up, ya can move back, I'm sure he be lettin ya.”

Another pause. Then laughter. “Dat, 'course, only be if he ain't already awake. Baron! Ya be trying to fool maman?”

[] Well, I was trying. I guess I'm not anymore!

[x] Of course not. Why would I do a thing like that?

“Of course not.” You say, yawning and stretching as best you can. “Why would I do a thing like that anyway?”

“Cos it be what I'd have done, if I was you.” Brigitte responds. “How ya feelin, baron?”

You shrug, cautiously opening your eyes- it's bright in the room, though Brigitte's positioned herself to keep the sun out of your eyes. Probably did that intentionally, too. “Fine, really. Bit sore where they opened me up.”

She nods, pulling a small tin of something out of a pocket. “Heah.” She says, tossing it on your lap. “That be helpin de soreness. Anyting else?”

You shrug, noting that the move doesn't feel too different- you'd been worried you'd be able to feel the implants under your back. “I could eat.”

She nods again. “We be hopin ya be sayin dat. You give maman a minute, de doc wants to come in and unhook ya from everyting, den we'll go get some chow.”

“How's Merlin?” You ask as she turns to leave.

“She be doin fine, baron. She not be awake yet, but she probably get up soon. I be havin to go in and move dis one's sistah-” She indicates Lilya- “From de bed probably. Dey be thinkin you two be disappearin if ya not bein in hand.”

You look down at Lilya, who looks up at you. “Are you two causing problems?”

She shakes her head before hugging you and burying her face against your chest. Brigitte laughs. “Truth be tol, no, dey do no be causin any trouble. De doctors, dey not be too happy wid them, sayin maybe dey damage de IV or move de needle or sometin like dat, but dey been angles uddawise.”

“Good.” You say. “So you were getting the doctor?”

1/2
>>
She laughs again. “So demandin! I be right back.”

She is, though the doctor isn't either of the women you'd met earlier. He's a younger guy, one who takes a second asking you the usual questions before removing your IV line and taping a cotton ball over it. He sticks around for a minute to talk- nothing major, just some of the usual small talk doctors always seem to like to have with patients, then he heads out.

Brigitte hands you a set of khakis- and laughs at the expression on your face. “Ya be back on duty as soon as dey process de release forms.” She says. “Den I be havin ta escort ya all to China lake.”

“So you're stuck with us?” You ask, standing up slowly. You're understandably a bit shaky, but you're pretty quickly able to move again without problem. “Seems like a waste of your talent.”

She laughs. “Mebby I be axin for de job,” then she grins. “And mebby I don't be.”

You laugh, heading into the small bathroom long enough to change- and examine the faint surgical scars on your back. It's not much- just a few lines tracking vertically down your neck, a few more intersecting them over your shoulders where they had to peel back the skin to work. No doubt, given how little you actually hurt, you've been seen to by a heal witch.

You step back out, dressed and actually feeling pretty good. “So, chow?”

Brigitte nods, and leads you down to the cafeteria, along with Lilya, who insists on holding your hand all the way there.

“So, ya be ready for all dis?” Brigitte asks, sitting down with her tray across from you.

Good on the Poles and honestly 'if' the Martians are going to show up we'll want every able body to fight them, the meat grinder that would be Moscow isn't a smart idea.

[x] Good point, let's go see what all they're on about.

You nod. “Yeah, good point. Let's go see what they're on about.”

Lilya tugs on your sleeve to get your attention. “Should we get Stasya?” She asks, when you look down at her.

“She can talk!” Brigitte exclaims.

Lilya looks at her for a second, then turns back to you. “We- “ She pauses. “We like your implants. Ours aren't as nice.”

You've noticed that both of them do make efforts, at least now, to hide the large steel plates on the back of their necks- Stasya is growing her hair out, and Lilya tries to wear clothes that cover them. The behavior is recent- when you first met them, they didn't seem to have any particular habits about their implants at all. You're not sure as to why that'd be recent, but you haven't said anything about it to them, and haven't brought up the subject at all.

“Yeah, I suppose we should.” You say. “Let's go see them.”

The three of you put up your trays- or, more accurately, you put yours and Lilya's in the tray return, while Brigitte gets her own. You then head back upstairs, noting that moving- even looking around, pivoting your head on your neck, doesn't hurt at all, and doesn't really feel different.

You laugh, returning Stasya's hug. “Well, get yourself dressed and go get some chow, I'm going to go talk to the docs.”

She frowns. “What about?”

You indicate Stasya and Lilya. “Your sisters.” You say.

“Frank they're not-” She stops herself. “What about them?”

“Getting the same VDNI we have.” You say, after a second of debating.

[x] If you want to, sure.

You shrug. “If you want to, sure.” You say, finally grinning and hefting Lilya up onto your shoulders- she'd been tugging at your shirt for a while now. “Get yourself dressed first though, huh?”

She looks at you over the tops of her glasses. “No, I thought I'd walk down there like this.” She says- still wearing an open-back hospital gown. You about choke before she giggles. “Of course I was going to get dressed. I still have those clothes we got in Alaska.”

You almost pass out.

She laughs again, grabbing the pile of clothes from the foot of her bed- looks like a folded set of khakis- and heads into her bathroom to change.

She's out a minute or two later, khakis on- including the pants. She walks a bit in front of you, along with Brigitte. Stasya takes your hand- the one usually occupied by Lilya.

The five of you walk into the doctor's offices to find the both of them at desks- Dr. Reed has her feet up on her desk, a sheet of schematics in front of her, while Dr. Akagi's desk is occupied by a coffee cup and an ashtray, while she's got a phone headset glued to one side of her head and her free hand rubbing her temple on the other side.

They both look up when you enter- and Dr. Akagi has the decency to extinguish her cigarette before you can ask. She hangs up the phone a second later.

“Mr. Bishop.” Dr. Reed says, standing up. “How are you feeling?”

[x] “Bit sore, but otherwise I'm fine. You wanted to talk to Stasya and Lilya?”

“Bit sore, but otherwise I'm fine.” You say, and she nods her head.

“That's to be expected, should go away in a couple of days.” She says. “If it doesn't, let us know.”

You nod. “I hear you wanted to talk to Stasya and Lilya.”

She nods, pulling her feet off her desk and leaning forward. “We did. Have a seat.” She indicates one of the chairs in front of her desk. Stasya and Lilya both share a chair, you decide to stand behind them.

“We couldn't help but notice that both Stasya and Lilya have VDNI implants.” She begins. “We didn't know that originally, but it's kind of hard to miss.”

Lilya tugs at her collar, trying to cover up the implant a bit more.

“And we've done some research on some examples provided by the military.” Dr. Akagi adds. “The Russian implants aren't very good.”

You quirk an eyebrow. “Aren't mine and Merlin's based on them?”

Dr. Reed shrugs. “Kind of. Rutsuko and I had to do a lot of re-designing to make them acceptable to use on people. Those-” She indicates the girls again, meaning their implants- “Look like a rush job.”

You narrow your eyes, placing a protective hand on the girl's shoulders. “What are you talking about?”

“The Soviet system isn't sealed like ours.” Dr. Reed says. “It's a single metal canal all the way into the top of the spinal column. It's sunk into the vertebrae, but it links the outer skin level implant with the interior probes with an inflexible port for the jack.” she says, picking up a pen. “It's like this-” She holds it between two fingers on each hand. “If my right hand is the skin, and the left is their vertebrae, there's almost no give.” She moves her two hands side to side, with the pen between them. “No flexibility.”

1/2
>>
>>38453913
Better than that. Merlin is now Half-Fighter, Half-Witch.
She has transcended her previous limitations And now she can be one with the Plane.

Meaning she will soon know what it feels like to have Frank inside her, masterfully controlling her every movement.
>>
“Not to mention the potential for contamination.” Dr. Akagi adds. “It's sealed, but the implant itself is completely exposed to the elements, and requires careful cleaning- which it's probably not getting here.”

You squeeze the girl's shoulders involuntarily. “So how much of a problem is this?”

“A fairly large one, we think.” Dr. Reed says. “Any kind of contamination inside the channel will negatively impact the VDNI system, and any kind of failure in the sealing or in the metal itself could cause a catastrophic infection.”

“So why haven't you yanked this shit out of them already?” You ask- they both shift at that question.

“Well, two reasons. First, legally, we can't without your permission as their legal guardian.” Dr. Reed says. “Second is we're not sure if we can. Their implant is literally part of their spinal column, it was never designed to be removed or deactivated like yours.”

“It's a risk.” Dr. Akagi says. “We'd have all the same support available during the operation and after it, but-”

You nod. “Right. I see what you're saying.” While they'd take every precaution, they're saying there's a possibility either- or both- of the girls could be hurt- or killed- in the attempt.

“Now, we don't want to scare you. In the long run, a newer system will be much healthier for them- able to grow with them and far less vulnerable to the elements or infections.” Dr. Reed says. “Plus, and I don't know if this matters, but the implants, like yours, would be much harder to detect externally. We'd fashion the same skin-level seals, you'd barely be able to tell they were there.”

The girls both look up at you, waiting for an answer.

[x] I think it sounds like what's best in the long run. Go for it.

You, briefly, understand now why your mother was always so mad when you or your bothers got each other hospitalized. You'd never really grasped that before- or why she seemed so torn up when you'd had to go under the knife as a kid, which had happened more than once.

You wrestle with the options in your head- but eventually, swallow and nod. “I- I think that sounds like what's best in the long run.” You say, hesitantly at first, but with a bit more conviction at the end as you convince yourself. “How long are we looking at before you can get it set up?”

“This afternoon, assuming we can get the next two units shipped down in time.” Dr. Reed says. “I'll make the call myself.”

“How long will they have to stay here?” You ask.

“Same as you did. We'll hold them for a twenty four hour observation period, then release them back to you. We'll just inform the field team that there's four of you now, instead of just the two.” Dr. Akagi says, standing up.

“So then what, you'll shift them to China Lake?” You ask. “We're due to report today, we probably can't stay the extra day with them.” Both girls stiffen at that.

“I be comin back to get them personal. Fact, I probably stay wid dem.” Brigitte says, from her position near the door. You look back at her, and she shrugs. “Ya be fine enough at China Lake, dey got plenty o security dere. Dis place where ya be needin me ta watch dem.”

You nod. “Yeah, that works. Girls, that ok with you? Brigitte will stay with you and then bring you out to china lake as soon as the doctors say you're good.”

“You can't stay with us?” Stasya asks. “We don't want you to leave!”

“I don't think so.” You say. “But you'll be joining us tomorrow!”

“But-”

“De baron, he be goin nowhere widdout ya.” Brigitte says. “But he be needin ya to be brave for a bit, hep him out wid dis. Ol Maman will make sure ya meet up wid him again, promise.”

Still, they both look back at you with the question in their eyes. They're far better at this than Jessica was.

[x] Listen to Brigitte, girls. She's always kept her promises to me.

You sigh, and give them both a smile. “Listen to Brigitte, girls.” You say, watching them both visibly deflate. “She's always kept her promises to me.”

Stasya nods- Lilya does too, a second later.

“Excellent.” Dr. Reed says, standing up. “I know it's hard, but it'll be over fast, and you'll be back with your Dad soon enough, girls. We'll get them set here in a second, but we won't actually cut until the components are down here. That'll only be a couple hours, but I'll make the call now. Here, let me get a nurse in here, to show you where they'll be and get them in gowns. Ritsu, you want to mark them?”

Dr. Akagi nods, pulling out a sharpie and grabbing her coffee. “I'll be down in a second.”

You walk with the nurse to their room- Brigitte stops her. “We be puttin dem in de same room.” She says, when the nurse shows you the first room- a single bed occupies it.

“But-”

“De same room. Maman jus be one woman, don't needta be runnin all over. An dey be more comfortable togtha, I be thinkin. Baron, ya agree?”

You nod. “Yeah. Shared room, please.”

The nurse hesitates, then nods. “Ok, this way then.”

>>
The room is one with a window overlooking most of the city south of the hospital, a hell of a view. “How's this?” The nurse asks, grinning.

“Perfect.” You say, noting the blackhawk approaching from the south. “I'm guessing that's our ride, too.”

Brigitte nods. “Yeah, that be it. You be stayin here till dey be comin to get ya though, there be a security team aboard, an I wan to talk to dem, let dem know what's goin on.” She says. “Dey do no be likin surprises. Dey like me.”

“Fair enough. C'mon girls, you two need to change, ok?” You say, taking a pair of the light hospital gowns from the Nurse and handing them to the girls.

Who promptly start changing right there, dropping their dresses and taking off their shoes. You turn around hurriedly, as does Merlin, blushing. “Uh, girls, next time, wait until we leave the room, ok?” You say.

“Why?” Stasya asks, curious.

Better also add:
"It's not that you should be ashamed of your bodies. Rather, it is slightly improper for you to just undress in front of me."

"Why?"

"Because being nude is... shit... it's something you gotta be careful of. You don't just run around naked all day."

"Why?"

"Because you'd get cold and people would look."

"Why?"

"Because it's just odd to see a naked child running around. I mean, do you see any naked kids running around? Of course not. It's because other parents teach their kids not to run around naked, else they'd get sick from touching something with their naked bodies."

"Why?"

“People don't need to see you naked, it isn't right.” You say.

“Oh. Why not?” Stasya asks. “Are we not expected to present ourselves for examination?”

“What? No!” You say, a touch more forcefully than you intended. “It's just- it's not right for you to be naked in front of me.”

You see Brigitte grinning like a maniac off to the side. You motion for help, she makes a well known hand signal to you- You're on your own.

“Why not?”

“Because- uh. It's not right.”

“But why isn't it right? We were examined once a month before.” Stasya says. “We're dressed now.”

You turn around to see them both climbing into their beds. “Because it's- uh. Being naked is something you shouldn't do around other people, they'd look.”

They look at each other. “But what harm is there in looking?” Stasya asks, confused.

Oh jeeze.

“People could get the wrong ideas, and try to hurt you.” You say, trying to channel your mom. You kinda wish she was here right now. Dad would just be laughing at you. “Or you could get sick from being too cold, and I don't want that to happen.”

“Why not?” Stasya asks.

“Because I care about you!” You respond. “Just don't be naked in front of people, ok?”

“But- you care about us?” Stasya asks.

“Of course I do.” You respond.

I care about you because that's the right, decent, American thing to do....

I care about you because you're two young girls too young to be caught up in this mess, but you're already caught up in it. We can't help the cards we're dealt, but we can deal with them the best we can.

It's not that... It's not that I care for you because I have to. I care about you both because I want to."

"No, I care about you more than just that. In little over a week you've both changed so much from mistreated young girls pressed into service, to young girls with an actual future ahead of you outside the military.

I care about you because I chose to be your guardian, not some government issued thug labelled as a 'handler'. I have seen you both and I have decided to protect you, fix you and show you that there is a world past what you were subjected to by the Soviets.

I care about you because in the short time I've been with you I've grown to want to protect you both, like family.

That is why I've continued to look after you both because you are like family to me. You both had you families snatched away from you and I want to return that simple rock for you to lean on. I have no idea if I'll do well in that regard but I assure you that I'll do my best to ensure both of you get the best you can have."

[] Write-in.

You shake your head. “I wasn't assigned anything. I was asked if I wanted to take care of you, I said yes.”

They look at each other briefly, then back at you.

“There are no more handlers. There is family.”

“Family...” Stasya says, quietly tearing up. “Are-” She starts crying. Liliya already was, silent tears rolling down her cheeks as the impact of the words hit her.

You turn back to Brigitte, who gets the message and steps out with the Nurse.

You nod, sitting on Lilya's bedside. She hugs you tight about the ribs as soon as you do- you wrap one arm around her. Stasya wastes no time in joining her- crawling out of her bed and rushing across the room to enfold you in a similar hug.

“S-so you won't leave us?” Stasya asks, sniffling.

“Never.” You say. “But you know I travel-”

“We want to travel with.” She says, almost instantly.

“Girls, you don't have to be in the military. You shouldn't be in the military. Girls like you should just be getting ready to go to the academy, to make friends, to live your lives. You don't get a re-do on these years, you know.” You say.

“We won't get many things back.” She responds. “But-”

“But we want to stay with you.” Lilya says. “We know you might leave sometimes, but you'll never leave us alone, right?”

“Not while I'm still breathing.” You say.

She nods. “S-so then, are you our new father?” She asks, just as Brigitte re-enters the room, along with a hard-looking commando type and the nurse, along with Dr. Akagi.

>You've even seen at least one battleship- the USS Louisiana, BB-71, the last battleship built in the US, after the proposed Montana class was canceled in favor of the proven Iowas.

Going by wiki, the list of proposed Montana's were:
USS Montana (BB-67)
USS Ohio (BB-68)
USS Maine (BB-69)
USS New Hampshire (BB-70)
USS Louisiana (BB-71)
