October 18, UC 0084.

You are Captain Dominic O'Hara, and the whole atmosphere between you and Cima Garahau changed in an instant as she slid over the cab seat between you to lean into your shoulder. Close enough to smell the perfume she chose for today: jasmine flowers and sweet licorice, smoothed and balanced by warm vanilla. A careful, balanced fragrance worn by a woman who's closer to your mother's age than your own.

It doesn't feel like a romantic gesture to you. There's no longing there, no desire. Instead the woman seems unusually restful propped up against you like this, her normal assertive demeanor at least for the time being having disappeared.

“This is nice,” she half-mutters. “I could stay like this all afternoon. Too bad the fee would be astronomical.”

True to her words, Cima remains in that position the whole way back to the spaceport, and even clings to your arm after you pay the cabbie your fare. The feeling from that moment in the cab has changed, though, and now you get the sense she's doing it playfully in hopses that she can get a reaction out of your teammates.

>Ask her to behave while on your ship. You don't need more scuttlebutt and rumors.

You realize almost instinctively that none of your teammates are going to fall for that sort of trick, and that most of your crew aren't going to care. After all, you'd have to be deaf dumb and blind to work on the Nagato and not know that there's something going on between all the members of your first fireteam. So why bother? Let Cima have her fun, for now.

When you reach the ship there are a few interested glances thrown your way, but nobody says something until you run into Audrey in the halls.

With a smirk she looks Cima over, taking in the sight and smell and subtle hints of the woman's body language.

"I see you've been having a grand old time," Audrey observes. "I'm gonna look over some test data in the hangar, the report'll be ready tonight."

"Hey," you ask as Audrey turns to excuse herself. "You know where Carya and Catrina are?"

She nods. "In your quarters. I think they're done for the day."

After thanking Audrey and wishing her luck with her work, you escort Cima towards your quarters. By now the novelty has worn off, and she merely walks at your side.

"Nice," she comments when she sees the inside of your quarters. "Even when I had my own ship my quarters were rather grim."

"I see you brought company," Carya observes rather stiffly. You've caught her mid-pour, a bottle of Taketsuru 21-year single-malt if your eyes don't deceive you.

Without a word of explanation, Carya slides the just-poured glass of whiskey towards the edge of the table, silently offering it to Cima. The older woman steps away from your side to grasp it delicately between her fingers, testing the nose before allowing the amber liquid to slip between her lips.

"You have exquisite taste," Cima comments. "Both of you, in fact: Miss Marseille in alcohol and Mister O'Hara in women."

"Thank you on both counts," Carya nods as she produces two more glasses.

You take a moment and send out messages to Karen and Christina inviting them to come down and spend some time relaxing, and one to Haman asking her to send Matsunaga over. It only takes a few minutes for the three old soldiers to arrive... and there's an added surprise when Matsunaga arrives.

“Amuro Ray...” Karen muses in surprise as the messy-haired young man takes a seat near Matsunaga. “What're you doing here?”

“Visiting a friend and collecting Shin,” he replies calmly. “Captain Bright wanted me to make sure he didn't cause you any trouble... he left in a hurry, and we weren't sure why.”

“I told you it was personal,” Matsunaga replies, clearly annoyed. “I'll thank you if you keep your nose out of it.”

“I get it,” Amuro replies. “I'm the one who killed her father. But you know as well as I do, that's just how things are sometimes. There's nothing to hold a grudge over.”

“That girl's father died at your hands,” Shin growls. “You'll have to forgive my overprotective tendencies.”

There's a lot of unresolved tension there. Doesn't take a newtype to see it, as Karen and Cima clearly demonstrate as they shift somewhat warily.

Karen is the first to try changing the subject as she passes Shin some whiskey. “You two are on the same side now. You don't have to like each other, so just try and tolerate it a whole hell of a lot. Got it?”

“Yes ma'am,” Amuro sighs. Matsunaga merely grunts as he accepts the glass.

>So, how exactly did you survive, Shin? I think we're all wondering.
>You've been awfully quiet, Christina. What's going on in there?
>How are things, Amuro? I hear that girl who was guarding you helped you escape?

Alright. Since I've already gotten a few votes for a round robin, I'll start with the winner and continue through them until a point comes up where you might ask a question, or answer one.
>>
>>38543559
I'm guessing Kamille.

Hathaway's too young, and too shit to be salvageable by any method known to man.
>>
>>38543706
>too shit to be salvageable
Speaking of which, there's a chance it might be Katz as well.
>>
>>38543706
I hope it's not Kamille, I'd like there to be some chance for him to have a normal life. This is happening two years sooner than it would in canon, it's possible Kamille's family situation hasn't degraded enough for him to become a pilot just because of "fuck you Dad" reasons.
>>
>>38543706
Is it too much of a stretch to hope it's Char being slapped? That guy could use it to wake him out of his slump.
>>
>>38543833
Okay, analysis time.

Franklin Bidan works for the Titans, right? If the Bidan family are still pretty much together in this timeline, does this mean there's a chance that Kamille ends up being inducted into the Titans?

I guess we'll only find out if Dom figures who developed the Zeta MS's the Argama has.
>>
You do realize the person that left in a hurry was Shin?
>>
>>38543414
"You've been awful quiet, Chris," you observe quietly, drawing her attention. "Whatcha thinking about?"

After taking a moment to sip at her whiskey, Chris sighs. "Amuro, huh? So you're the guy on the White Base who was supposed to get the Alex?"

Amuro seems briefly surprised as he puts two and two together. "You were the test pilot who fought with it at Libot. You must be something else if you could handle a machine meant for me in combat."

"Not really," Chris admits. "Back then it was damn near impossible for me to control it. I nearly got beaten by a rookie in a Zaku."

"A rookie?" You can see that Karen's not buying her story so far. "How'd you manage that?"

Chris shrugs. "He planned things out, and he had his back to the wall with what he thought was an impending nuclear strike."

"That never came," you point out. "The ship carrying those missiles surrendered."

"Bernie never knew that," Chris answers, her tone remorseful. "I doubt he'd have attacked otherwise."

"Bernie?" Cima repeats, quickly catching on.

"That's just how things are sometimes," she sighs, repeating Amuro's words. "But I have to wonder if the dead hold grudges as readily as the living seem to."

>>
>>38543987
"Grudges, no. Regrets? Probably."

>>38544110
Well, yes. Newtype ghost bullshit is a thing. Although I'm not sure if any of them had grudges in canon.
>>
>>38543987
You think back on what you felt with your newtype senses when Gato forced you to kill him.
>As what little remains of the GP-02 topples to the earth, you swear you can hear someone wishing you luck, and asking one final request: that you never lose sight of your better nature, and that you do continue doing your utmost to create a world where that same side of humanity is allowed to show itself. A world without Zeon, without power struggles, and where young men and women won't be asked to sacrifice their lives for worthless causes.
I have been through some weird stuff. And this is going to sound out there but one time when a man gave me no other choice but to kill him I swear I felt something from him after he was gone. One last message to never lose my better nature and to always fight for a world where there is no more war or conflict like we have known for the past few years. So I think it depends on the person who died.
>>
>>38543998
What if he meets the charming, kind and charismatic man from Jupiter, who might tak an interest in the powerfull young impressionable newtype
>>
>>38543987

I don't think the dead hold a grudge, but their deaths leave a mark on us...

Amuro experienced that with Dozle, albeit slightly different as he experienced the extent of Dozles conviction in wanting to stop 'The Gundam' from slaughtering the escaping civilian ships, and we felt Gato's acceptance as we destroyed the GP-02, the nuke and killed him...

There is also the canon future of Papasmear 'Cursing/killing' Kamille as he died...

So it is not the dead that hold grudges , but the marks they leave on the living...

"Actually, ghosts are kind of a thing," you point out. "When I killed Anavel Gato, I swear I felt something in the last moments of his life. His... ideals, I guess. Not the ones that were twisted by the reality of Zeon, but what he truly wanted to see the world become."

Catrina briefly takes over and pipes in, as Amuro's eyes widen and he pushes away from her in shock at the sudden realization of why she and Carya felt so unusual. "Yeah, and I'm literally a ghost who's sharing her sister's body."

"Oogidie boogidie!" she adds, leering comically at Amuro.

"Point is, death doesn't change who Bernie was. If he was the kind of guy who'd trade his life for the Libot colony, I don't think you need to worry too much."

"Just don't forget his sacrifice," you conclude, "or the impact he had on your life."

Christina nods, the faint shadow of a smile playing across her lips.

"To Bernard Wiseman," she says, raising her glass.

You and your peers return the toast, and drink in silence.

A second round is poured: a twenty-year aged GlenDronach.

"Now, come on!" Karen declares. "It's been bugging me, but let's hear how Matsunaga here managed to survive the war, shall we?"

"I've been wondering that myself," Carya agrees. "Let's hear it, big guy."

"It's not that interesting," Shin insists gruffly. "I'm sure you have better stories to tell.

"I'll trade you one of mine for one of yours," you offer.

Carya nods. "How about how I met Dominic?"

Christina nods in agreement. "Stories like that are always good. I remember when I first met Bernie."

"Was it something sweet?" Karen asks.

"I cracked him over the head with a baseball bat."

Cima laughs heartily. "I like you already, girl."

"Fine," Matsunaga waves, defeated. "I tried to emulate my friend Dozle's bravery and lay down my life covering the retreat from Solomon. I even announced my plans over the radios. But fate had other plans for me."

"My mobile suit was struck by a stray round. It wrecked my attitude control and opened up my propellant tanks. It was all I could do to keep it from exploding on me, and to keep the oxygen supply clean and running."

Carya suddenly seems nervous to you, drawing a glance from Amuro as Matsunaga continues his story. "I was stuck out there for two days before a Feddie cruiser picked me up."

"Two days?" Karen asks, amazed. "No Zaku's got two days worth of air. How'd you manage that?"

"Simple. I meditated," Matsunaga explains. "It slowed my heart rate and conserved my oxygen."

"That must have been a trial," Carya interrupts. "I'm sorry you had to go through that."

"When a beam rifle punches through your suit, you're just happy to be alive, you know?" he replies calmly.

Very suddenly, you realize why Carya s behaving so strangely: the beam that punched through Matsunaga's machine wasn't from a GM.

It was hers. And it wasn't an accident, either.

Carya and Catrina must have known it was Matsunaga. He always fought in a white mobile suit, so it was impossible to miss him, and his relationship to Dozle Zabi was known even in the Federation. That they fired on one of their own seems like revenge for what had happened to them at the newtype labs, where Catrina died.

So that's why she took such an interest in the news that the White Wolf was still alive. You give her a knowing look, and she presses a finger gently against her lips in immediate realization that you know.

"And that's my story," Matsunaga finishes. "All the rest of it is interrogation and backroom dealing."

You nod in gratitude. "Carya and I met when we were fighting at A Baoa Qu," you begin. "My team and my home ship were wiped out, and her team engaged me in my GM."

"He put up an amazing fight," Carya recalls. "Of course at that point he wasn't yet a fully-realized newtype, but the pressure of the deaths happening all around him were starting to drive him insane. I could feel it."

"I wiped out her team one by one," you continue, the memories of their death screams still in your memory though faded from the time involved. "And I was laughing all the while. That's how I got my other nickname."

"From there, the situation became one of survival," Carya sighs. "His machine was crippled, and we were alone after the "glorious forces of Zeon" disintegrated around us."

"We took a gamble on a teenaged enemy ace, and never looked back."

Matsunaga nods in approval, while Amuro looks vaguely uncomfortable.

>Ask Cima what her story is?
>Ask Amuro what's bugging him?

The young man nods thoughtfully. "You're still together, even after all these years, and even though you're enemies. All because of your newtype bonds?"

"Not entirely," Catrina shakes her head. "But that helped."

"One night of sex doesn't mean you're in a relationship" you tell Amuro, sipping at your fourth glass of whiskey: a Talisker 57' North.

"You turned to each other for comfort in a tough time in your lives, and drifted apart for a while after. There's nothing wrong with that, and if you want to keep her as a friend just talk to her about it openly."

Amuro sighs, returning to his own drink. "I suppose you have a point. I owe it to Sayla and Chan to straighten this out myself."

Ask Karen for the full story about SE Asia

If we already got that, ask Cima about the stuff that isn't directly related to the many ways Zeon fucked her over.

Trying to come up with some topics here that can somehow relate to our own situation too.

How about the crew that are still following her up to now? That's some deep seated loyalty there, and the work her commandos do are quite top notch (based on the remnant vault raid and Leipzig info retrieval).
Did they also have a bit of influence in Cima's decision to return to the front-lines?

"So the only stranger here now is Cima," you observe, grinning at the older woman as she nurses her seventh drink of the afternoon.

"You never really talk about yourself."

"Well," she begins, sitting up straighter. "I was born on Mahal, as were most of my unit."

"Not an auspicious start," Matsunaga nods. "That was the colony Gihren chose to convert into a laser weapon, yes?"

"It was. I joined the military early as a career officer, and piloted a Zaku I from the very opening days. I was quite proficient, and was entrusted with sensitive missions from my superiors. That is where it went wrong."

"I was ordered to gas a colony, with what we were told was sleeping gas. In reality it was a nerve agent. Dominic, if memory serves I may have mentioned this to you."

You nod as the officers around you who haven't heard this part of Cima's story shift uncomfortably in their seats. "I remember. It came up when you warned us about the attack on Libot."

Cima sighs, continuing with her story. "They promoted me for it... but when I found out, I wanted to die at first. I very nearly ended my own life that day, and some of my team followed through on their guilt. It was after that when I was assigned a team of Marines."

"When the war ended my superiors, who had ordered the senseless attack I participated in and lied to us about it, fled to Axis. They pushed the blame for the atrocities onto my shoulders, and I was branded a war criminal. That was when I began the long three years of piracy for which I am now as infamous as the gassing."

"Who gave you that order?" Carrina asks suspiciously. "Is it who I think it may have been?"

Cima nods. "The current leader of Axis, yes. Enzo Bernini."

One more reason to take the man's scalp, you figure. Add it to the list.

"Which leaves me where I am now," Cima shrugs, nearing the end of her tale.

I guess the second half of the post might involve Karen connecting the dots.
Now we see if they'll hit it off, or if they hit each other with their fists first.

"My home is gone, my family were killed in the war, and most of my comrades are dead. My vengeance against Delaz and the Principality has accomplished little if anything."

"I have no friends and few allies, I'm still wanted by many in the Federation for war crimes and piracy, and I'm beginning to feel my age as the days and weeks of fighting the Republic's bureaucracy drag by. I doubt I'll ever be free from my past, I'll never be allowed to retire, and I'll never have a home or a family to replace what I lost."

Cima finishes the rest of her drink in a single gulp. "And that's my 'story', Dominic. That's who I am."

"Am I a criminal? Am I a heroine? Am I merely a survivor? Am I guilty or innocent? I don't have those answers, and I don't think I ever will."

>Why are you here? Why me? Why my team?
>Change the topic?

"I'm sorry for dragging up bad memories, then, Cima. For what it's worth, you'll always be welcome here. Your past doesn't matter, you've done nothing but the right thing as long as I've known you. I'm proud to call you my friend."

>I don't have those answers and I don't think I ever will

"Even if you never find your answer, there will always be comrades to share a drink amongst when times get rough. Don't get caught up being guilty over the past when you can safeguard the future."
>>
>>38548229
This turned heavy real quick.

>Something else?
"I doubt you'd be standing alone from here on out now. And if not for your warning, Libot would've suffered the same fate with the exact same toll in lives. Think whatever you like about yourself, but I believe there's still room for redemption."

And a joke write-in to uplift the mood.
"Ever given some thought on a Jupiter Retirement Package? Swing by Mars and kick Panini's ass on the way. The Nagato isn't just some mere secretary ship you know."

Is ZZ Gundam worth watching? It's the only UC show I haven't watched, mainly because the online consensus was that it was trash sandwiched in between Zeta Gundam and CCA.

Dunno. Never watched since I hate the Double Zeta.

But, I've heard that it's not actually that bad and the only reason it gets flak is because it's a major shift in tone from Zeta.

"Sorry to bring up bad memories," you offer quietly. "But I still have one question."

"Yes?" Cima asks. "What do you want to know?"

"Why us?"

She blinks once. "What do you mean?"

"Why me? Why my team? Of all the people in the Earth Sphere you seem almost passionately dedicated to helping us succeed in particular, even when you can't help us directly."

"Why?"

At first you're caught off guard by Cima's response, and you're not sure why. Then it hits you: this is the first time you've seen the woman smile quite so warmly. It's almost as if for a moment she's a different person, one untouched by the horrors of industrialized warfare and unembittered by betrayal and loss.

"Because you're the sort of person I wish I'd met years ago," she replies. "And helping the family you've pulled together succeed makes me almost feel l have a family again myself."

Also, Seed Destiny and Age have since shown people what a bad Gundam show really looks like.
>>
>>38548844
If you can power through the first half of nothing but wacky hijinks, sure.

You're pretty much gonna stick around for Purus, a colony drop sequence, Haman's death sequence and Blueberry Yoghurt. Mecha pr0n is always a staple, though some of the designs can be a drastic departure too.
Psycho 2 and Quin Mantha more than makes up for it though.
