Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest

You traveled to the cave you had given to the liberated human slaves, only to find it empty, except for a dead body of one of them. He had died in torment, and the word 'Traitor' was drawn on his chest in blood. Evidence suggested that a human with knowledge of the ancient civilizations had killed him, so you set out East to find the human tribes. You talked with Bathory about your future plans and pulled some pranks on Lathrien and Melandie. You found the humans, in a camp much larger than any you had seen before, with tools and weapons far more advanced than you know humans to possess. You talked to the Elder, and learned that this tribe was only a third of the size of the tribe Karrim, presumably the man responsible for the discovery of ancient knowledge, wants to create. You learned of a mage learning old magic and went to visit him. This is where the twelfth installment of Feral Necromancer Quest was interrupted by technical difficulties.

Housekeeping: It was 3AM local time when the posting servers went down, so rather than waiting for them to come back up I went to sleep to continue the thread today.

It, along with the other previous threads is archived here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=feral+necromancer

You are Vlad Tepish.

Your Holdings: A renovated ancient Elven ruin. A well hidden and protected cave.

Your minions: 37 normal undead (orcish, elven and human skeletons and zombies, 13 armed with bows, rest with crude melee weapons). Undead orcish shaman, 5 Undead Drow necromancers. Skeletal elk mount. You control 50/50 minions. Your control is absolute.

Your relationships: Lathrien, your apprentice (agreeable), Ragda and Gerda, liberated old ladies of your tribe (friendly(ish)). Melandie, elven huntress (ally). Bathory, your lover in an alchemically improved body (warm). Bound spirit of an elven scout (bound to an owl homonculus). Bound spirit of a gnoll pyromancer (bound). Bound spirit of an orc demonologist (Bound to a dread dog homunculus). Bound spirit of a black dragon (bound). Elven tribe (open diplomacy), Gnoll tribe (allies/treacherous bastards), Large Human tribe (indifferent), Dwarf tribe (open trade), Drow (enemies).

Your skills, stats, traits: In the pastebin above, along with your available spells and equipment.

Your goals: Fix your relationship with Bathory, achieve immortality, grow your legacy.

The mage of the tribe is a strange man. For one, he is dressed in white fabric, wool, you think. This is extravagant by the standard of human tribes. He is also in deep meditation when you see him. He is in a tent dyed white, with many strange amulets and symbols scattered about and hanging from the walls.

You wait for him to finish his chanting.

'Oh, I did not see you there,' he says.
'I am Vlad Tepish. I am the shaman of my tribe. I hoped we could share knowledge,' you say.
'I cannot do that. The ancient gods do not share their power, unless you are pure in your conviction. I could not teach you my magic, and if I learned yours, I could not use it,' the mage says.
'Interesting. You gain magic through the gods?' you say.
'Yeah, I do not have any power of my own, but through them I can sense all corruption, cure wounds and ailments, even see the future
>>
Well, if he can sense corruption, then his senses must be off. In all your research you have learned with certainty that your magic was considered to be corrupt by the ancient races.

NOTE: I forgot to mention that you also control some 13 predatory animals, instead of four normal undead. So the actual numbers are 33 normal undead, 13 predatory animals, Undead orcish shaman, 5 Undead Drow necromancers and an elk.

we should at some point search for one of the slaves from the cave and ask what happened and why that guy was tortured and killed

if we don't find them I say we ask someone if the met some guys that were ex-slaves of some orcs and that we would like to know where to find them
>>
'This magic, the old faith, could you tell me more about it? Where you learned to use this magic?' you say.
'Lord Karrim, of course. He taught me to read and gave me these books,' he says.
'Interesting, and you could learn to be a mage, just from these books?' you say.
'The ancients called mages like me 'priests'. They spoke to the gods directly, and could perform great miracles. I can only pray for their aid, but sometimes it is given,' he says.
'Could you tell me more about the gods? Are they like the gods the tribes have?' you say.
'No! No, not at all. The new gods are heresies, they are false gods, worshiped by those who don't know of the glory of the true gods,' the priest says.
'And these true gods, what are they like?' you say.
'They are strange, yet good. It is far beyond mortal ken to understand them, but they are working together to make the world a better place,' the priest says.
'And yet they allowed the old civilizations to fall?' you say.
'It is all a part of their plan. We, led by Lord Karrim shall rise again, to greater heights than the ancient nations ever dreamed of!' the priest says.

That does not make much sense to you, but you always had trouble understanding gods.

>Mess with the priest in some way. If he were to sense corruption in you, you fear he could set the whole tribe on you. Strike first.

'I came here looking for some people, they were slaves of an orcish tribe once. Have you seen anyone like that?' you say.
'Many people come and go. I have not spoken to anyone liberated from an orc camp, but I do not doubt Lord Karrim would have them join, if he met them' the priest says.
'Where is this Karrim?' you say.
'He leads the largest tribe, mostly made up of hunters and warriors. They move a lot, but they should be not far North from here,' the priest says.
'So you get many visitors?' you say.
'A few, yes,' the priest says.
'So many you would not notice a dozen people, all of which survived slavery to orcs?' you say.
'I spend most of my time listening to the gods, or praying to them. I know only those that come speak to me,' the priest says.
'I see. I have been to the mountains North-West of here. I saw old altars to a strange god. The stone was black, and he looked as a great skeleton,' you say.
'Learn not of the dark gods, lest you want the gods of light to abandon you,' the priest says.
'I'm sorry?' you say.
'I shall speak no more of it,' the priest says.

'I spoke to your elder. He said that the old shaman had fled the tribe,' you say.
'The old fool. He was a heretic, and he spoke lies of Lord Karrim. It is good riddance he is gone,' the priest says.
'Why did he flee?' you say.
'To avoid just retribution, of course. We can ill afford to have a traitor and a liar among us,' the priest says.
'Karrim would have killed him?' you say.
'I do not know. I hope so,' the priest says.
'Where would the shaman run to?' you say.
'Wherever he wanted to. He had power, sure. He can hide his presence even from me, and certainly all trackers,' the priest says.
'So you've no idea?' you say.
'The old man liked the forest. He might have gone there. I do not care, so long as he does not come back,' the priest says.

This does not feel right. Of course you knew foul tidings were afoot, but you are liking this new world order less and less. What is more, you are not certain at all that you could disrupt it by force, at least not without killing everybody in a horrid magical plague.

Methods of messing with the priest, from most to least subtle

>Craft a totem of fear or drain life and bury it under his tent. It would hurt his focus, and he would have a hard time learning more magic. Unless he physically found the totem, there is no way he could detect it.
>Curse him. He would lose one of his stats, potentially making spellcasting impossible for him. Another mage might detect the spell, but he would be unable to sense it himself, unless you messed up the roll.
>Inflict disease: similar to above, except he would likely die from it in a week or so. A very skilled healer might learn of the magical nature of the affliction
>Actively attack him with drain life or your sword.

Don't mess with the priest. He is nothing but a proxy, and our relation with these people and the "old gods" is more or less netural.
>>
>>38557916
Karrim is a man. You think he is the same Karrim that was a scout of your old tribe, now happened upon some sort of ancient knowledge.

You are worried about this priest. You do not feel comfortable attacking him directly, but you do not want to leave him alone entirely either. You craft a totem of fear and wait for him to go back to his prayers. You sneak back in the tent and bury the totem in the center of his tent. He shall never quite have peace unless he moves from his tent. That should hurt his focus somewhat. You can always return and deal with him more permanently later.

Nothing else to be done here. The priest worships his leader the same way that he does his gods. You wonder if that would be a heresy according to the ancients.

This shaman interests you, but meeting him would mean backtracking a lot, almost all the way back to the ruin. You might try to commune with the spirits of the land around here, if he was a powerful shaman he might have left some evidence of his passing.

You should also meet with this Karrim as soon as possible. He might recognize you, and if he did he would likely reveal yourself as a necromancer. If he has other followers as devout as this priest, you might be in a lot of trouble. That said, you do not feel you could just leave him alone either.

>Leave the humans be for now. You would be safe from them in the ruin anyways.

The kid has to do something with actual consequences sooner or later. Lathrien and Melandie should be able to track the Shaman nearly as well as you could.

You leave the camp to meet up with the elves.

'Lathrien, I have a task for you,' you say, 'Melandie, I would ask you to help him too.'
'Yes, Vlad Tepish,' Lathrien says.
'What is it, Vlad?' Melandie says.
'The old shaman of the tribe was kicked out. I would like to speak to him. Someone with that much power would have left an impression on the spirits of the land. Find him, and when you do send the scout to me,' you say.
'What should we do when we find him?' Melandie says.
'That is up to you. If you think you can talk to him, do so,' you say.
'Yes, Vlad Tepish.' Lathrien says.
'Now go. He is said to have liked the forest. Bathory and I are going to stay here and investigate further,' you say.

The elves leave westwards, but less than two hundred meters away from you, Lathrien drops into the meditative position, to commune with the spirits you imagine.

You feel confident you can leave them. Even if Lathrien does something stupid, at least Melandie will be there to call him an idiot for it.

You turn back to the camp, and see Bathory coming out of it soon.

'Bathory, have you learned anything?' you say.
'They all say they love their leader. I am not sure if it is truth or fear,' Bathory says.
'I learned much the same. Also they have possibly the strangest mage with them,' you say.
'I know. None of the tribes folk seem too keen on him. He has been useful, or so I understand,' Bathory says.
'Strange. I sensed hardly any magical talent from him,' you say.

>'Let us go find this Karrim'
>'Let us stay the night here. If nothing else we're likely to get a warm meal out of it.'

'We should leave. I do not feel comfortable or safe here,' you say.
'I quite agree. Where to?' Bathory says.
'The gnoll tribe moved East. They should not be too far away. Strange creatures, but capable. Perhaps they have learned something we have missed,' you say.
'Good. Where do we start looking?' Bathory says.
'Let me think. I was given directions, I just have to remember where we are right now exactly.' you say.

Not much later you set out North-Northwest. The tribe should be less than a dozen miles away, you could reach them before the daylight is out. You are walking, so it takes a little longer than a ride on elkback would have, but you are not too rushed.

There is a full moon out, and even if it takes a few hours of walking in the dark, you reach the gnoll camp quite easily. It should be here somewhere, but you cannot quite see it. You could look for the camp in the darkness, but you decide there is little point to it. You are not in hostile land and you do not have any immediate deadlines.

You spend the night camped out on the plains. In the morning it is much easier to see what has happened. Back in the forest the gnolls were entirely out in the open. They did not much care about who saw them, as they had little to fear from any of the other tribes in the region. Here, on the plains they are hiding. They have made simple, very low, moss covered dwellings. Little more than holes in the ground they would be very hard to notice at any distance. In fact, your own camp was less than a hundred meters away from one such dwelling and you only noticed it in the morning light.

You call out the name of the gnoll chieftain.
'His name is really Spot?' Bathory says.
'I'm afraid so,' you say.

It doesn't take too long to get a response from the camp. Dozens of gnolls come out of their holes. Finally you see Spot. He and the other gnolls are growling and baring teeth at you.

'Don't come closer, human!' one says.
'Why are you here, Vlad?' Spot barks from a safe distance.

I wouldn't mind sending in the animals to harass the enemy. And sending in a force to flank and kill a few.
But if what the wizard says was true, his group should be 100+ strong with mostly warriors. So we should set them up as best we can.
>>
You keep going. The cover of night should allow you to sneak up to the camp and see how it is set up. You can gauge its strength and the actual situation.

It is nearing midnight when you see the campfires in the distance. There seem to be some guards, but not enough to catch a single man sneaking up to the camp. Not unless you screw up big time.

HEY! Yahweh! STOP MESSING WITH THIS QUEST! We get it, ha-ha. Double critfails are very unlikely and they happen ALL THE TIME. Hilarious.

Double Critfail. On the one hand, your Stealth has increased to 2.

On the other:
You go as quietly as you can. In the darkness you are not worried that you would get spotted, so you only have to worry about not making noise. You get closer to the camp. You see many tents, you do not count them, but you guess there are something like twenty five.

You go on further to get a closer look. Just around this tree would be a good hiding place. You cautiously move around it.

And you bump into someone. You nearly attack in panic, but then you see the face of the man you just bumped into. Thin, long face with minimal facial hair. He is wearing fully fabric clothes, red and black. You remember him as Karrim.

'Vlad Tepish,' he says, surprised, but quiet.
'Vlad Tepish!' he exclaims, 'Necromancer! Dark wizard! Get him!'

Fight defensively!
21! Blackjack!

If a battle he wants, a battle you shall give him.

'You have been naughty. No, you have been a full on dick. Well, I can be a dick too, if I have to,' you say.

You draw your blade. You stand back and stall for time. He attacks you soon enough. He had a small, but finely made sword on his person. He is quick with it, but he cannot match the power of your blade. Furthermore, as you are not actually actively trying to hurt him, he has to work much harder than you do.

Then some of the watchmen are upon you. Armed with simple spears, the only advantage they have is in numbers. Reach of the spears would matter, but your sword is long and very sharp. When they get too close, you manage to slice several of the spears in half, so they are left with short staves. It takes less than two minutes for your undead to arrive and the battle is truly joined.

The camp below is still waking up, but already your numbers are evenly matched. You are going to have to finish this quickly, or you shall be in trouble.

>Kill as many of the watchmen and groggy mooks as you can with your undead.

We need to think about the end game of this little melee starting. If we curse his charisma, we might get his own men to turn on him. Then we can capture him and question him properly. If we can't do something to turn his men, we are fighting a long drawn out running battle in retreat probably as we don't have the numbers to win.

Their numbers will mean nothing, as you murder their men and raise them to replace your defeated undead. You keep the attention of Karrim on yourself, as your dead slaughter the disorganized and tired soldiers that Karrim could call on such short notice. There is attrition going on, but attrition is always an advantage to you.

By the time the rest of the camp has awoken, your numbers are just about equal, although you've had to replace many of your undead with humans.

'Forces of light shall always prevail over evil,' Karrim says.
'Evil? What is evil if not torture of innocent men? What is evil, if not lying to force men to your way of thinking? What is evil if not slaughtering intelligent beings for no reason but their birth? Ask yourself who you are and what you have done and then, only then call me evil!' you say.

16! Close, but no cigar!

'Liar! Betrayer! If we kill him, these undead will fall with ease! Everyone, focus on the necromancer!' Karrim shouts.

Well, fuck. No matter what you do, this is going to be tough. Your undead could easily hold their ground. In truth, even if you die they will likely destroy the humans. That is hardly a comforting though to you.

They rush you, with spears, simple swords and staves. Their numbers would be even if they fought the undead on even footing, but they focus all their attentions on you, and so you are badly outnumbered.

You have taken one wound. You are still in fighting form, but somewhat distracted by pain.

Why wouldn't the idea work?
Shamanism is corrupt magic, and souls fall mostly under shamanism. So even if the shity priest did get better, he shouldn't feel any corruption from it.
We have HIS body with out a soul, so it could be possible to put him back into it. Just bound this time around.
Or take it and use it to make a copy to put him into.

He could say that the "old gods" saved him/resurrected him w.e bs.

What other problems are there?

'I don't know Bathory. It is clear I am incapable of talking to humans. What would you do?'
'Well... Oh, Vlad,' she says.
'I know I shall not fight the rest. I will try talking to them, no matter what,' you say.
'Vlad, this is a tribe. That means there are women and children in the tents. That is the first thing. You clean this place up, then we go talk to them and do whatever they ask,' Bathory says.
'Yes, of course,' you say.
'Then, well I do not know. We cannot keep this a secret, so long as there are living people here. And I will not allow you to hurt the survivors,' Bathory says.
'Of course, love,' you say.
'Don't... Not now. Then, then we have to talk to the other tribes. We go without your army. We explain what happened,' Bathory says.
'No. If they do not listen they may kill you. I will go alone,' you say.
'Idiot. You tried that and you killed a tribe. Not just any tribe, the biggest tribe in living memory. I need to be there,' Bathory says.
'I cannot lose you,' you say.
'Well, tough. You do not run away from your responsibilities,' Bathory says.
'But they are MY responsibilities. You had nothing to do with this. You had nothing to do with any of my sins,' you say.
'I need to be there. I am the better negotiator. That is all,' Bathory says.
'Yes, Bathory.' you say.

You get to removing signs of battle. You move the bodies away from the area, at least. You can do nothing about the blood. Luckily you work fast enough that only one child peeks through the tent flaps. He cries out and eventually wakes up the few remaining asleep.

There are few signs of battle by the time the women and children, the old and the weak of the tribe leave their tents and approach you cautiously.

>'I... am sorry. Is there anything I can do?'
>'Listen! There has been enough madness this night. Stay calm and let us talk about this.'

We could use that to our advantege i guess.

Succinct and accurate. I should note that the priest was pretty specific in saying that he did NOT worship this god.

'Bathory, please back me up,' you say, under your breath.
'Go,' Bathory says.
'I am Vlad Tepish. I am a necromancer. Karrim attacked me on sight and your men and strong women followed him to the last. I am sorry,' you say.

There is stunned silence. They all look upon you. With fear and with hatred. A woman drops on her knees and starts crying loudly.

'Please, we have lost much, believe me, we all have, on this day. I beg of you, consider our situation,' Bathory says.
'Murderer!' Someone shouts.
'Indeed. However, if there is anything I can do for you I will. You are all free to go wherever you like, and you will have my protection until you get there,' you say.
'Why would you do this?' A young woman says.
'Your leader was a liar. He was a cruel man who killed people under my protection. I came to reason with him, but he would not hear it,' you say.

No one answers.

'The offer stands. Ask me anything I can provide and it will be yours,' you say.

You sit down on the ground your legs crossed and you wait. They are in shock and they hate you. In a moment they will start thinking, however, and when they do they may understand their predicament.

So you wait.

They return to their tents. As the morning breaks you are still sitting there and waiting. Eventually, a woman, one you recognize from your old tribe walks up to you.

'Bathory was dead. You brought her back. Can you bring my son back? If so, I will join you, and so will the rest of those that you used to call your tribe,' she says.

You consider it. It is possible. Their spirits should still be around for a little while. And you did tell Bathory you would try to help them in whatever way you can.

'It is... possible. The process is very painful, and it might keep him away from his rightful afterlife. I can try, if you are certain,' you say.
'I just want my boy back,' she says. She is composed, but you think she might break any moment now.
'Also, I can only bring back one. Maybe two people, if I do everything perfectly. I could give you your son back, but no one else,' you say.
'But you could fix it. You could bring him back.' she says.
'Perhaps. It is not a certainty either. And why would I bring back your son, but no other?' you say.
'Because he is my boy, he is mine!' she says, losing composure.

There is possibly more to gain here by doing this. Her son may have detailed information about Karrim's master.

We can bind all the souls if we want and then make bodies for them at our leisure later on. It's not like the materials were incredibly rare, we can gather them later. And it's not like we will go out of our way to make their bodies superior.

'Very well. It will take time. But I will bind the spirits of anyone whose family asks for it. Eventually I will be able to bring them back. Please consider this very carefully.' you say.

You should have known better. Just about every one in the village forms a line to you. You end up having to bind thirteen spirits. They are not going to be happy, but the families are willing to come with you now.

And with that I shall conclude the twelfth installment of Feral Necromancer Quest. I'd usually go on for a dozen more posts, but Hell, this has been running for seven hours now.

Between today and yesterday's session I'd say you've gained 4 exp. Rules for leveling up http://pastebin.com/vBRyBWfK . Potential options, Int 4 costs 4 exp, Shamanism V costs 4 exp. Necromancy VI costs 3 exp. See pastebin for full rules.

Also soul binding is specifically limited by lowest between shamanism and necromancy. Think of it as a combo spell. It would have been irrelevant, as for most of the quest you have had Necromancy at a higher level than Shamanism, but now that they're both almost certainly (waiting for like one more vote) at five it's going to matter.

~80. It appears many of them did not have family here, and you ended up having to raise some of them. Raising undead makes binding spirit impossible, so some families were extra pissed off.

>>38564302

as long as they're a minority, we can tell them to fuck right off if they don't like it here.
>>
>>38564302

>>
>>38564302
We should soul bind every sentient enemy we kill from now on. Homunculus body + spirit transfer = 1 free minion which does not count towards our undead limit.
We could have "undead" army numbering hundreds with the skills we have right now.

Not sure if we should soul bind all the people we killed here as we want to improve relations but this is something to think about in the future.

Okay, official like then:

You have gained Shamanism V!

You have learned Bind Spirit IV. In addition to providing senses and speech, you can have the spirits provide very basic levitation to their own vessels, effectively making them mobile, if awkwardly so. You are not very certain how or why it works, but it does.

You have learned Imbue Element (Wind, Earth, Frost, Lightning): A versatile spell, Imbue Element is mostly used for enchanting items. You can set the intensity of the element, so a Sword of Frost would be cold enough to deal extra damage, but you could just as well imbue frost on a rock to use it as a sort of a refrigeration unit or air conditioner. If you ever learn pyromancy you will be able to imbue fire too.

Raise Imbued Dead: You can imbue elements on your undead minions. This will make them a little more effective in combat and will provide additional benefits specific to each element.

>>38564414
Legit option, but while materials are abundant now, they would eventually become scarce if you kept doing this. Also, creating a body for Bathory took most of a day. Still a plan worth considering, especially with the more powerful enemies you might face, but it will not be simple.
>>
>>38564456
>>38564499

Resources shouldn't be a problem if we set newly made minions to mine and gather resources.
We shouldn't have to do everything ourself.

True, It would be time sensitive.

But still no reason not to soul bind every enemy and put them in storage in case we need them.
