Holy shit, Sir Terry Pratchett is dead. RIP in pieces.
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you read a book, said goodbye to your friends, and departed for the docks.

It is currently the 3rd of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

Your journey through the city streets is peaceful. You're forced to pass by Pani's temple on your way to the docks, and find yourself picking through a crowd of faithful supplicants. It seems as if some sort of festival is going on today. So far as you are aware, it's neither a feast day nor a day of solemnity. Perhaps an event organized by the local Varistha, or maybe even the Amatya himself. Such sudden celebrations aren't unusual, especially if the temple is in need of funds for some sort of project.

Eventually you succeed in pushing your way through the crowd, but instead of walking straight towards the market you cut through a side street and start making your way south east, towards the Port of Amakra, the main port of El-Amin. Of course, there are many smaller docks, piers, and shipyards dotting the city's waterfront, as well as beaches where the populace might leisure and enjoy themselves, but because of its position in the natural harbor which cuts into the southern tip of the city and its proximity to the market, most goods have always flown into the city via the Port of Amakra.

The Port of Amakra is a sight to behold. Built in the golden age of Hiacia, the port takes up nearly the whole of the western edge of El-Amin's harbor. It's constructed around an artificial island raised from the sea itself more than a millennia ago. A massive complex has been constructed around it filled with docks where vessels might unload their goods and workmen carry them to the markets only just outside. Two long prongs protrude from either side of the complex, stretching into the harbor and serving to protect the facility from the ravages of nature. Piers intended to service larger craft protrude from each of the harbors, cranes stretching skyward to assist in loading and unloading the ships at anchor. The entire port is walled off, though the walls are in poor repair. There hasn't been a siege of the city in more then a thousand years.

The building constructed atop the artificial island at the center of the port serves as the port authority. You may find a captain willing to take you north there, but the captains of most larger vessels will delegate the task of dealing with the port authority to one of their officers rather than go themselves. Considering the hour, you'd be most likely to find captains either on their vessels or in any of the innumerable bars, inns, and brothels which surround the port.

>Head to the port authority.
>Investigate the bars and brothels, to see if you can't find a captain willing to take you north.

If we don't find a ship we like first we should look for items that might help at sea
>>
Reminder what to do once we decide on the ship for sure.
Before anything else, we need to make Point Offense(that's +1 vys), and then figure out how to make mist quickly(might be +1 vys too, maybe), and I personally think learning to walk on water or do Varvar's thing he used in
>When you become once more aware of the world you're in unfamiliar surroundings. You see the Varistha perched atop the crest of a wave. Your viewpoint is strange, it's almost like you're looking down on him from behind. You can't actually see his face. You can see the island in the background, rapidly growing closer. It's hard to get a good estimate, but he seems to be impossibly high up, you would think him flying if you couldn't see the water beneath him.
would be cool, but at least learning to do that at a reasonable height would be enough to fight against pirates or something. Ideally we could also figure out how to make storms and such, but that seems too hard for Mik.
THEN, once we have more shit in our water magic repertoire, we can get some more Earth/Metal/Nature done, as well as metas/effects if people want to.

Question to Soma, will we have to meditate on Create again, or have we learned it fully? Do we just have to roll for success every time we try to use it?

You slip through a gate on the western edge of the port, the guards standing to either side of the door paying you no mind. They're dressed in the uniform of the port authority, a deep blue robe with a golden crest on the right breast which depicts an anchor surrounded by a ring of coral. They wield long, heavy-bladed glaives. More akin to axes than either spears or swords. There are dozens of guards patrolling the port, ensuring that no theft is carried out and no arguments turn violent.

Once within the walls of the port you find yourself momentarily lost amid the chaos. Men scramble back and forth, some carrying letters clutched tightly in their hands and others hauling crates to and fro. Not just Samjan either, though they certainly make up the majority of sailors and officers that scurry about. Humans and elves are well represented, perhaps the only place in the city that nobody bats an eye at their presence.

You spot a massive warship sitting at anchor, gangplanks bridging the distance between her guard rails and the pier at which she's docked. She has a twenty foot ram protruding from her front, tipped with some sort of crystaline substance you don't recognize, and you see four ballistae sitting on her deck, currently unstrung. She's perhaps the most impressive vessel you've ever seen, with the exception of the ancient Rhynian galley which served as the flagship for that band of pirates which you wiped out. You wonder how it managed to survive that battle. So far as you were aware, the Shah had thrown every vessel in the Shah's Navy at those pirates and not a single one survived.

You start wandering about the port, looking for any other vessels which draw your eye. You spy a moderately sized vessel sitting at anchor in one of the many piers which protrude from the port's two protruding arms. It's a fairly traditional vessel in terms of construction, nothing really stands out to you in terms of size or construction. What draws your eye is the emblem emblazoned on the ship's sails. Two spears crossed over a dagger. You recognize it as belonging to the Band of Three, a powerful alliance of the three most powerful merchant guilds operating out of El-Amin. Getting to know some of the members of such a powerful organization might not be a bad idea.

You find yourself passing through a set of towering double doors, at least twenty feet tall and probably thirty wide. You're forced to side step a cart and nearly barrel into a man carrying a crate as a result. Fortunately you manage to slide past without incident, but it's a close thing. You find yourself inside the complex which surrounds the island at the center of the port. Here smaller vessels are moored. One in particular catches your eye, a small sloop not dissimilar to the vessel you sailed whilst staying at the temple of Pani to your north.

In my opinion we should try to get North and back as fast as possible, and a giant warship is both going to be slow, and it's likely going to be doing patrol duties and such which would further waste our time. Personally though I'd prefer the sloop but I can settle for the merchant ship.

You make a slow circle around the interior of the compound before returning the way you came, once more slipping out into the blazing midday sun of El-Amin. It doesn't take you long to spot the merchant vessel still sitting at port. Some men are loading crates as large as you are into the ship's hold using a crane built on the stone pier the vessel is moored at. Judging by the number of crates still to be loaded, the ship is about to depart. Thus, you hurry through the crowd to reach the ship before it sails.

You make it with time to spare. The men loading the crates into the ship's hold wear the uniform of the port authority. You don't see the captain anywhere, though you do see a number of men lounging on deck. You cup your hands around your mouth and call out to them. “My friends, where is this vessel headed?”

One of them, a muscular shirtless man, calls back to you in response. “We're headed to Anthus, friend. Carrying a load of spices and silks. For what reason do you ask?”

You'd thought he was merely dark skinned at first glance, but a closer inspection reveals that he is actually quite pale by the standards of most Samjan. It seems that nearly every inch of him is marked with elaborate, swirling designs. You think it might be writing, though you can't read the words from this distance. Tattoos aren't generally viewed as socially acceptable among your people, due to the practice of tattooing slaves who attempt escape as a punishment, but the practice has always been popular among sailors, Vatis, and the military.
(1/2)
>>
You're forced to raise your voice to be heard above the din of the port. “I seek passage to the north and hoped to speak with your captain about signing on for the voyage. I'm a capable Vatis, and would be willing to work to pay my way.”

The man turns around, saying something to a companion that you can't hear. His friend jogs off, vanishing through a doorway into the underbelly of the ship. The tattooed man calls down to you in the interim. “He's fetching the Captain, you can come on deck if you'd like. It shouldn't be long.”

You take the sailor's advice, ascending the gangplank. The vessel is not the largest ship you've ever seen nor is it the smallest either. The hold seems quite expansive, though that doesn't exactly leave much room for the crew's quarters. You smell a vaguely sweet scent and notice blue smoke trailing from a pipe some of the sailors on deck are passing around. They offer you a hit, but you decline. You'd like to keep your head clear, just in case you need to negotiate for your passage.

It isn't long before a man in an elaborately decorated robe steps out of the doorway the sailor vanished through only a few minutes before. He wears a dagger tucked into a sash wrapped around his waist, a weight turban in the southern style draping down his back. He's quite old, judging by his neatly trimmed white beard. You'd guess somewhere around five or six hundred, though possibly older.
(2/3)
>>
You bow, touching your index and middle fingers first to your forehead, then to your chest. He merely inclines his head in greeting. “So, my man tells me you're looking to sign on with my crew for our trip north. He tells me you're a vatis. You certainly don't look the part. What business would a Vatis have outside the city to begin with?”

You're taken by surprise at first, and find yourself casting a glance around the room to ensure that none of your servants were there to see the exchange. You're relieved to see that besides Chryssa, Darzi, and yourself the room is empty. Darzi seems utterly nonplussed. The bhataki have always had strange traditions concerning mixing with outsiders. It rarely comes up in their culture, what with being nomads mostly confined to Pidjata, but they have no formal rules against mixing with those 'outside the tribe'. In the past this has been extended to Humans and Elves as well as other Samjan.

I've got it! It's not possible for us to do it, but I'd bet Chryssa's BFF can pull it off! We just need to wrangle Darzi into this scheme and get her to convince Chryssa polygamy is A-OK. It's a long shot, but at least it's something.

Romance isn't important in this quest, so don't hold your breath. Soma himself also dislikes polygamy, so there's that.
Don't make the poor QM write something he despises. It won't make anyone happy.
>>
>>38656309
I trust Soma to put his foot down when necessary.
>>
>>38656298
No he didn't, he just had his mistress move into his place without pretending she was anything other than his mistress.

>>
>>38656309
Shouldn't have made polygamy be a central aspect of the main character's culture then.
>>
>>38656385
No, Soma actually has said he dislikes the idea of having a harem or group sex before.
But that is irrelevant, because he doesn't have to like it to write it.

Do you think he's a fan of murder and all of the crimes that appear in this setting, or perhaps the destruction of an empire consisting of millions of lives?

Piss off, idiot.
>>
>>38656345
I hope so, but I still find the very idea of it stupid. A Quest is a collaboration between the QM and the Players. While it's the QM's job to write the story and entertain the Players, it's also the Player's job to cooperate with him and control the QMC in a way that entertains the QM and lets him him an even better story
.
We're all here to enjoy the ride together, so it'd be nice if people stopped poking the driver with sticks.
>>
>>38656387
>>38656437
That's blatant Player vs QM mentality, though.

It would be player vs QM if players wanted to go down that way specifically just to spite the QM.
We want a harem regardless of Soma's preferences.
>>38656526
No, it wasn't like that, he just stated that that can get him executed, but he didn't make it "Just don't..." because that would have been giving her permission to do so in the estate, which he didn't do.

Which is pointless, because a harem doesn't fit the Quest and would be only a detriment to Adventure and Magic. A single partner should be a limit. It's fine if Mik gets a harem in the epilogue or something, but actively pursuing polygamy mid-quest is both pointless and OOC, because Mik doesn't care much about romance and sex in the first place, much less having multiple mistresses.

There's enough of the world for him to spend decades exploring and he's biologically immortal. I doubt Kadir will send assassins halfway across the world the moment his Shah-senses detect Mik fucking scum from a different race.
His family's values only concern him as far as they are likely to disgrace the family. He wouldn't care much as long as he could keep it under wraps.

None of those are taboo or forbidden except for the part with killing Kadir.

Just to clarify something before I head for home: my preferences in relation to polygamy are largely irrelevant. Polygamy is the norm among Mik's people and he would be expected to maintain multiple partners openly without repercussion, even if he can't legally marry.

That said, Vatis do tend to have fewer partners simultaneously than most married men, even if Vatis often end up sleeping with more people in the long run.

Anyway, my point is that since I'm not writing smut the fact that harems aren't muh fetish doesn't really matter.

You hold out your hand, palm flat, and channel just a touch of fire magic. A scroll burst into existence, glowing softly as text scrawls across its surface. “I seek a ancient scroll detailing the secrets of the universe. I hope that, by gaining the knowledge contained within, I will be able to recover the techniques lost to the fall of Rhynia and Hiacia.” You clench your fist, and the illusory scroll vanishes in a burst of fire and smoke.

Your demonstration seems to have suitably impressed most of the crew, though the Captain himself still seems skeptical. “A worthy goal, I admit. We must constantly strive to advance our understanding of the arcane arts, if we ever hope to once again command an empire to rival that of our ancestors. Yet you still haven't shown any particular talent for water magic. A Fire Vatis is more of a hindrance than a help at sea, the last thing we need is you losing control of a spell and setting the sails aflame.”

You draw yourself up, puffing up your chest and generally acting like a haughty ass. “If you insinuate that I am anything but a master of my craft, I must inform you that you're sorely mistaken. I have studied for more than a decade to master the arcane arts. What test would you dub suitable proof of my skill in water magic?”

The captain draws his dagger from its sheathe. The blade is a curious thing, if you had to guess you'd say it was rife with impurities. It has a strange blue tint, and a wavy pattern which seems intrinsic to the metal. It's actually quite beautiful, though you can't imagine the steel is of particularly high quality. The old captain flips the dagger, catching it by the flat of the blade, and offers the handle to you. “Slice yourself open and heal the wound. That will serve as sufficient proof of your skill. You can do that, you can pump the bilge and drive the ship when the winds are low.”

(1/2)
>>
You take the dagger and pull down the portion of your turban which covers your neck. Slowly, so the captain can see, you drive the point of his dagger into the flesh at the base of your neck. You stop as you feel it begin to scrape bone. With a smile on your face, you twist the knife cruelly in the wound before ultimately tearing it violently from your flesh. You don't spill a drop of blood through the whole process, nor do any signs of the self inflicted wound remain by the time you remove the knife. The blade isn't even stained red.

The captain seems duly impressed, where as the sailors seem quite intimidated by your little display. The muscular tattooed fellow looks like he might vomit, he's turned an even paler shade than his natural skin color. Another fellow, an ugly sort with horribly crooked teeth wearing a red cloth on his head, stares at you wide eyed.

When you offer the captain his dagger back, grip first of course, he takes it gratefully and calmly tucks it back into his sheath. “Very well then, we'd be glad to have you if you'd like to join us. So long as you're willing to put in a day's work you'll have an officer's cabin all to yourself and passage to Anthus. I'll even pay you an officer's wage. That's two percent of the profits from our cargo.”

Considering this ship is carrying silk and spices, its cargo will likely sell for thousands of gold. Thus, that's really not a bad deal.

Honestly, this is a pretty great deal. You'll get a nice room, good pay, and you'll probably be able to read or meditate while you work. You extend a hand and the captain grasp your forearm in a comradely fashion. “Very well, I'll be happy to sign on with your crew. When do we depart?”

The captain releases your arm after a few short moments, tucking his thumbs into his sash. “Glad to have you aboard, we'll be casting off just as soon as these,” He raises his voice, turning his attention to the rest of his crew. “Lazy sons of whores get off their asses and finish loading the hold! Pani's sweet tits what are you louts standing about for? Get a move on!”

The captain's voice sets the crew in motion, a few of the crewmen ducking through a hatch on the deck while the rest see to their duties above. Some help to guide the cargo into the hold, others start to tie off ropes and generally prepare to hoise the sails. While the crew is busy, the captain turns his attention once more to you. “If you've got any possessions you plan on bringing with you, fetch them quickly. We'll be casting off soon. If you've got everything you need, follow me and I'll show you where you'll be sleeping.”

You pat your cloak. “I've got everything I need with me. Lead away, Captain.”

The portly old man nods. “The name is Mazin Khalasi, but Captain Mazin will do. Follow me, right this way.” He turns on his heels, walking briskly across the deck to the doorway he came from.

You're actually familiar with the Khalasi family, many of your family's retainers have been Khalasi. They're a minor noble house, no lands so far as you're aware. If you recall correctly theirs is a family of Sahibs, which means that the original branch of the family has either died out or last all of its lands but the remaining family members are still considered nobles.

You're led through a small doorway into a narrow hallway beyond. There are three doors, one directly ahead and two others to either side. The captain, forced to duck in the narrow hallway, opens the door on your left and motions you inside. You find that a short stairwell leads down into a rather small, cramped room. Of course, when compared to a hammock in the ship's hold you're living in the lap of luxury here. You even have a real bed.

The captain claps you on the shoulder. “Well, this is it. Make yourself at home. When we cast off I'll send a man down to fetch you, I'll want you to help guide use out of the port. We won't be under the power of sail until we're out in the open water.”

With that, Captain Mazin climbs the stairs and shuts your door behind him. You're left to your own devices, it seems.

You reach into your cloak and extract the Ritual Book of Surya. You've only got a few pages left, and you've had the book for more than a month now. You'd like to finally finish it. Making yourself comfortable on your bed, which proves to be surprisingly soft, you crack open the back and quickly flip through the pages until you find where you left off.

The only thing you haven't yet read are the notes which have been added to the back of the book. The first set you read related to various theories and also proposed a method of creating a sort of vortex by selectively heating and cooling the air. The next section of notes seems to you like the ravings of a mad man. The first page is just covered in strange doodles. At first you're not sure what to make of them, but slowly they resolve themselves into figures. The more you stare at them, the more sense they make. The central figure is the sun, and the blackened husk that surround the sun like so many rays of light are supposed to be people.

You turn the page, to find that the next page is dominated solely by line after line of the same phrase. 'Praise be unto him'. It just repeats over and over in progressively smaller script, by the end of the second page it's not even legible anymore. You've no idea how someone could write that small, or why they would do so.

The third page makes some semblance of sense, but it's still hard for you to understand. It seems to be discussing the technique the book described to either shoot lightning from one's hands or create blades of fire able to cut through most anything. According to whoever wrote these notes, the book's instructions were misleading and vague. One must merely strictly control “Surya's discharge” as the author terms it in order to create the “blade of his will”. Of course, this goes entirely contrary to what you know of Fire magic. You've been taught that Fire, much like Water, must be allowed to act as it pleases.

(1/2)
>>
Regardless, the handwriting and content change on the next page. You presume this to be a new owner taking their own notes. They seem quite fascinated by illusions. In the notes, the author discusses the possibility of using illusory images as sort of traps for the unwary. Apparently it was the author's belief that one could channel enough vys into illusion that it would act as a storage vessel, so that when one might need to cast a sudden spell they could draw upon the illusion to cast instead of expending their reserves further.
>Ritual Book of Surya (Finished)

Much to your disappointment, the last six pages are blank. You shut the book, quite pleased with having finally finished the damned thing. You tuck it swiftly into your cloak, withdrawing the Excidium to continue your reading. Unfortunately just as you pull apart the pages, there's a knock on your door.

You sigh, tucking the book away and pushing yourself to your feet. Your door is only a few feet away from your bed, so you don't really have to go far to jerk it open. You find a nervous young boy, perhaps eight or nine years old, standing on the other side wringing his hands. He jumps at the sight of you, taking several steps back while trying to stammer out a sentence. “Th-the c-c-captain would see you on d-deck, sir!”

His message delivered, the boy bolts up the stairs without waiting for your response. You sigh, absentmindedly wondering what sort of nonsense the crew have filled the boys head with in regards to Vatis and you in particular. You step outside, shutting your door behind you, and make your way out onto the deck.

You find that the cargo has finished loading and the ship is being gently poled away from the pier by a team of laborers in the uniform of the port authority. As the ship slips free of its mooring, Captain Mazin calls down to you from his position atop the aft castle. “Vatis! Push us out to sea, would you? The rest of you slimy whore sons get ready to raise the sails!”

You glance around, looking for a place to sit that won't have you getting in the way of the sailors. You end up climbing atop of barrel of salted pork and folding your legs beneath you, closing your eyes as you focus on the flow of vys around you. It isn't long before the din of the port fades away, ghostly images of the crew and the crowds of people beyond slowly filling your vision. This part of the city is awash with vys. It turns the ocean into a shifting mass of purples, reds, and blues. It fills the air with a thick fog of every color imaginable. It is almost overwhelming, and the source of this excess quickly becomes clear.

Every brick which forms the perimeter wall, every tile which paves the walkways, stone which roots the piers to the sea floor, and every wooden support which holds up the massive compound surrounding the central island is enchanted. Runes of every shape and size fill your vision. It's almost blindingly bright. You wonder what they do. You note with some curiosity that there are quite a number of fire runes, especially around the entrance to the port.

Focusing, you start to channel your own vys into the water beneath your vessel. It isn't hard to create a swirling vortex of water, an artificial current, to guide the ship gently forward. You navigate deftly around other vessels exiting the port, and shoot through the narrow gap in the walls marked on either side by stone watchtowers.

You continue to guide the ship through the harbor. The current carries the vessel around rocky outcroppings, ancient fortifications, forgotten shipwrecks, and all manner of hazards which fill the harbor. It's a miracle anyone manages to navigate into port without the assistance of a Vatis. Soon your efforts place the ship in open water, and a shout draws you once more into the land of the living. Upon opening your eyes, you're greeted by the sight of pure white sails snapping open, a strong wind pulling the fabric taut. You're underway.

You carefully unfold your legs from beneath yourself, stretching your stiffened joints while considering your answer. In the end, you decide you have no reason to actually lie. I don't think we'll be having need of you for some time yet, if you're unfamiliar with the business of sailing you'd be more of a hindrance than a help working above deck during the day. That being said, you'll be expected to take shifts on the watch just like everyone else and should the seas grow hazardous or the weather foul we'll be calling upon you to guide us safely through the danger.”

He half-turns to make his way below deck, but pauses. Turning once more to face you his expression grows concerned. “Ah, and a word of warning. I don't anticipate encountering any pirates on this voyage, I've heard from reliable sources that an Aghtaki recently wiped out the whole of the pirate fleet which has plagued the Anthosian Sea for decades now. Took the Shah's Own with them, but the seas should be clear. Just in case my sources were wrong, you'll be called on to aide in the defense of my cargo and crew.”

With that, he bows his head before slipping through a grated hatch in the deck, descending into the cargo hold. This is shaping up to be a rather leisurely job if all you'll be expected to do is help the ship navigate hazardous waters.

Technically, Pollice verso just means "By a turned thumb". However, the predominant theory among scholars is that the thumbs up gesture was less of a thumbs up, and more like a "He's outta here!", like an umpire jerking his thumb over his shoulder. Thus, it would be the 'kill him' gesture. The thumbs down would thus be the 'spare him' gesture.

Greetings. My name is Patrick Bateman™, and I have contacted you for important matters.

I have taken notice to your post. It is of high quality™, but it's not the contents of the post that I'm interested by, it's the post-number.

Your post-number is unlike any other that I've ever seen. It is unique, as no other will ever obtain your distinct strand of numbers, but that is not the only unique thing about it.

Look at the numbers at the very end. Take a close look at them, and you might even realize it, too. Your post-number has ended in repeating digits, that is why I am contacting you.

I don't want to seem like a bother, as I understand that you're very busy crafting hundreds of quality™ posts such as the one I am replying to, but this is a matter more important than posts. It's a matter of life and death.

Here on /tg/], it is the most important rule of all that repeating digits much be checked and kek'd, that is why I am contacting you. I am here to check and kek your repeating digits, for it is a matter of religious importance.

So, after all this patience and discussion, I will now check your repeating digits. Here I go: #Checked

Now that your repeating digits have been checked by me, it is now time for me to leave. I cannot spend all day checking your repeating digits, no matter how much I love them. The reason? More digits must be checked.
