The Rock of Everlasting Warmth is possibly the second best thing to ever happen to the world. The first thing being the sun, obviously. They both enabled basking in a way that borders on the criminal, you think to yourself, sitting on the RoEW. On day's where the sun couldn't appear it wa your rock, your foundation, and the only way to get a decent nap.

You recline on the rock in a basking positiong. Nearby a fingery one makes noises at you. Then they do it again. Ugh, will they shut up? Then they begin pushing and prodding you. Trying to get you to move. There should be a limit to how rude they can be.

Eyes open and teeth snapping you find yourself in a dark hut. Your older brother flinching away from your sleepy attack. Your fire stone is underneath you and sinfully warm. Older brother points at a pile of bird meat that your siblings are already picking at and wanders off. You suppose you can forgive him waking you up if it means you don't miss food.

Scratching idly you dig into the pile with your siblings. You've increased in size again. You're pretty close to the size you were when you died. Ah well, a new day dawns, oH CRAP THE SUN. It's shining in an open door nearby and you're very obviously late.

>It's a brand new day and the sun is high. (go bask)
>All the birds are singing and they're gonna die (go hunt)
>Actually, where in the chicken coop are you?

You swallow the last of a crow's foot and look take a moment to consider your surroundings. You have no idea where you are. You put the question to your siblings and are met with shrugs, though your middle brother, who appears to be moving as vigorously as he can without upsetting the remaining injuries on him, says something about a healer lady living here. So apparently auntie remembered where that healer she mentioned lived? That would explain why this place smells like a wet carpet from a house incontinent dogs and cats have been living in, that's been dragged through a field and then shat on by at least... four things. Auntie must have brought you all here after you fell asleep. Or you've been eggnapped by a particularly helpful eggnapper. Could be either.

The sun waits for you outside and you wander out the door to greet it. You'll deal with whatever as it comes. Today is a beautiful day and the weather is fine. The birds are even singing, but you figure you have your entire life to carry out a bloody campaign of bird-related violence. They get a pass. There's too much delicious sunlight. The healer's hut sits in a forest clearing that leads up to the edge of a cliff. It's almost perfectly placed to get maximum sun despite another higher cliff slightly to the east. Hurray for southern exposure, hurray for the sun. You find auntie on the cliff edge sunning herself next to a hideously old looking lizard lady. They're either dozing or basking, and the difference really just depends on what school of basking you belong to.

Below the cliff you see some forest and further south the beach is only a half mile or so away. Further back behind the hut the mountainous area it sits on extends further up, almost sheer in places extending east.

Before they return to the village, where news will likely break. Oddly enough, all we've shown is bioluminescence. Not actual fire ability as originally suggested. At worst, we can live with squids and communicate with them via that power.
>>
>>38655635
Flopping down next to auntie you let our your standard greeting "hey" and do some pre-bask stretches. Tightness on your side reminds you that you had some injuries yesterday too. Craning your neck over your shoulder you can see that most of the white powdery seal has flaked off leaving a thing translucent scab that's mostly flaked off after last nights growth. The cut has sealed though and you see angry pink. Guess it's healing

Still there are more important tasks before you. Planting your legs you strike the First South Pose of the Basking School of the East. You let your mind drift and just focus on the sensation of the warmth of the sun. A gentle breeze blows in from the ocean filling your nose with the smell of salt and rotting fish. You feel a great calm as the sun's light almost seems to flow into you, faster than it would normally and you feel your body warm, thwarting the cruel breeze seeking to steal away your heat.

You sit basking for a long time. Quietly enjoying the company of auntie and the old lizard snoring on the other side of her.

You interrupt your basking and subtly sneak back to the hut, who knows what kinda of interstitial magical basking devices lie inside... Wandering in you immediately notice a treasure chest in the corner. Strange... That wasn't there earlier... You attempt to open the treasure chest and find it unlocked but stuck, struggling, you put your back into opening it when it suddenly gives way, revealing sharp teeth and a large tongue. You don't even have time to yelp before being pulled in. Minutes later you are fully digested, only your discarded fire stone as proof of your existence.

Warmth from the sun reminds you that you were playing sun last night when you fell asleep. You still don't know how magic works or how to perform it but no lizard ever accomplished anything by letting a lack of knowledge stop him. You focus your mind and try to do some magicky stuff. Nothing really happens. You even try communing with the sun but all you really get is the general pleasure you normally get from basking in the sun's glory and beneficence. You do feel exceedingly well warmed though.

There's nothing to be gained by hanging around here further so you decide to go poke around the old lizard's house while she's asleep. You're pretty sure auntie dozed off too. It's rather hard to tell, she may just need to sun longer since she's bigger.

Inside the house you're greeted by a line of siblings sitting just inside the door, apparently too lazy to actually step out of the building and get properly into the sun they've stopped in the first place sunlight hit them and begun basking. The result is a five lizard pileup in the doorway. You squeeze past without comment.

The walls of this building are festooned with hooks and shelves covered in all manner of things, mostly stinky things. Dried bits of various animals hang from he wall, tufts of some er or another bound in string and left on a shelf and small lidded bowls, the faint odors from which make you recoil in horror.

Near one of the back walls you find a chest, and after a moment levering it open you find it to be full of various sized cauldrons and pots. There's a fire pit in the room with a strange metal grate hanging over it that looks like it can be raised or lowered to preference. This is a lot more boring than you were expecting. If the lizard has any cool valuables she apparently hides them in places young lizards won't find them easily.

You poke around the jars a bit more, braving one lid to see what's inside and finding dried fruit or something that smells like flesh for some reason. After sniffing around you find a jar of the white powder auntie was using last night. Your cut appears to be healing but that's no reason to risk it, you spit into your hand and feel along your would with it before tamping on the powder like auntie did last night. When you're finished you've got a thin layer of white visible over your shoulder without a lot of extra leftover. It looks good to you anyway.

now you're bored though, so you head back outside. As you pass the sibling pile you see that it has since collapsed at least once and your younger siblings are actually outside the hut sunning now.

You older brother is near the back and bottom of the sun pile and you vaguely recall promising to drag him along on the next hunt you do. Friendly prodding gets his attention.

"Hey."

"Hey."

"I'm gonna go hunt, wanna come?" you ask. You are nothing if not a straightforward lizard. Your other siblings cast an eye at your interaction but none of them seem interested in leaving the sun soaked clearing. Except your middle brother but you're pretty sure he's not allowed to do strenuous things.

Older brother looks conflicted though. He looks at you then shoots a look at your middle brother then back. His hesitation is clear. Still he seems to want to come.

"I'll think about it."

"Okay," you tell him, "I need to go tell auntie and get my stuff so you can stay here and decide."

You leave him thinking and wander over to auntie. She's apparently woken up and is chatting with the old lizard but stops at your approach.

"What is it little one?"

"Gonna go hunt," you tell her.

"Oh? And where were you planning to do that?" she asks.

You had not thought of that yet.

"Down there," you point down the cliff at the forest. It should be full of stuff to play with.

"I see. Are you that hungry?" auntie asks, "You still have food from yesterday if you want it."

"Nah," you shake your head, "Just bored."

"Hoho," she laughs into a claw, "You're going to be as bad as your mother."

"Why? What did she d- AH!" You're interrupted by something pull on your tail and lifting you into the air. You turn to see the old lizard looking you over, focusing on your side.

"Oh. This is very good," she tells you, "It's not really necessary but I was going to give you another anyway. Better safe than sorry."

"Um, hey?" you answer awkwardly.

"This is Dona," aunties says, "She is one of the healers, though she mostly stays out here herself unless she's needed. She likes to visit the humans sometimes."

"They're funny," the old lizard agrees, putting you down. "And they don't mind an old lizard like me watching them run around like the world is ending."

"Where are my things?"

Auntie points at a pile on one side of the hut and you recognize aunties bag and equipment.

"Are you going down alone then?" auntie asks.

"Dunno." You look over at yours siblings who are spreading across the sun dappled clearing at the speed of molasses, "Hey listen, I invited older brother but I think maybe he doesn't want to go. He likes hunting and he didn't do well yesterday, why wouldn't he come?"

"Ah hm," Nanny scratches her chind idly as she considers, "He strikes me as the responsible sort who maybe take themself too seriously. He probably feels responsible for what happened to your other brother and wants to make sure he's alright."

"Why?"

"Because he's the oldest."

"Why does that matter?"

"It wouldn't to most lizards, but every lizard is different," auntie shrugs.

"Weird."

Auntie nods. "If you're going to insist on hunting at least take it easy. You are not entirely well yourself, however well you might be healing."

Unpronouncable crow sword in hand you're ready to go. Your brother doesn't appear to have come to a conclusion but as you approach he gets up.

"Can't spend all day sunning," he grunts, "Maybe we'll find something everyone will like."

You want to rescind your invitation after hearing him spot heresy but he's young, you can forgive him. Maybe. The side of the cliff proves no barrier to lizard climbing as you lead your brother down it. It's not a short climb and for a bit you worry some interprising bird will notice you and pick you off but nothing of concern happens.

At the bottom your brother stops you before you can wander off into the woods.

After a quick conference you and your brother decide that you'll track down something fuzzy and delicious and you'll chase it toward him. He suggested he do the sneaking parts but his first attempt was so bad you decided to let him stick to the more murder oriented end of things.

A half an hour later you've found the entrances to an old rabbit warren. You're not sure there are still rabits living in there but something with four legs walked in and out of these holes a lot. You get your brother set up at one exit and quietly clog or collapse all the others you could find but his and one for you. Looking down the hole you consider how to do this. Herding can still work but your weapons won't really work in the hole, though you're pretty sure you'll fit with fairly little digging.

We might actually do something today.

Maybe a flashlight.

Well, You know that we are going to keep trying till something works, so It really makes no sense delaying that by making the DC high.

We want to praise the sun Dangit.

Obscenely, you lack even informal education and are basically shooting in the dark. Don't worry plan fire magic can still succeed

You set up a bunch of sticks and flammable detritus in the hole. You'll smoke whatever is in there out. You put a claw on it and think warm thoughts. Nothing happens. You try thinking of different warm thoughts. Finally you get frustrated and just start hitting the the sticks with your fire stone. You nearly drop the rock down the hole when it bursts into flame, instead you drop it outside the hole, but not without starting your fire. Your hand feels a bit warm but you don't think you burned it. You watch the fire for a bit til you're sure it's got a good burn going before covering the exit with a rock. Then you join your brother at the other exit after reclaiming your fire stone.

Small dribbles of smoke are coming out so you think it's working. Then the tide of furry bodies come. Fat brown rats come pouring out of the hole, led by a bristly grey rat that seems the wrong color for just grey fur. You and your brother leap into action. You manage to get fangs around the grey one's head and twist your own attempting to pop its head off. Beside you your brother does similar to another overlarge rat.

He's met with more success than you as something bites at the inside of your mouth. On reflex you open up and the grey rat flies a short distance away. It rolls to its feet and bristles visibly. Looking at it though there are actual bristles of shinier looking material along its back and body poking out like needles and glinting in the minimal sunlight.

>Leave the weird rat, plenty more coming out of the hole
>Oh, that is cool. You have to eat that.

You look at the rat. The rat look at you. You charge and battle is joined. The rat plunges in at your claw and you try to bat it away with your crab shield. It dips at the last moment and you have to swing with you sword. Instead of being thrown away the rat clings to the unedged side you hit it with and you have to release it to avoid a nasty bite. Your weapon flies away and you find yourself facing the rat down again.

It surges forward again, trying to push you back away from the rat hole and you manage to get your shield inbetween you. You claw finds your fire stone where you tucked it into the harness auntie made you to attach equipment too. It thankfully doesn't come aflame in your hand. You kinda need it on fire though as the blade on it is ornamental and not at all sharp.

The rat, sensing weakness darts in to attack again. You throw the knife in a panic as it suddenly light on fire. The airborne rat has no chance as it's skewered and pinned to a tree by the burning knife.

You should probably take the rock out before you don't have rat left to eat...

The rat lets out little angry squeals for several seconds as the rock continues to burn cheerily in its flesh. Non-metallic fur catches fire as well and you stare transfixed until the rat stops moving. The rock still burns.

You find a stick and start trying to wiggle the rock out of the rat without touching it. Your stick catching fire isn't helpful but eventually the rock and rat fall free, either because of your efforts or the rock just burning a hole in the tree big enough to fall out of. Either way the rock goes out once it's free of the rat, and you see the rat let out a last long breath before going still for the last time. You collect both rat and rock. The tree is still on fire.

You stow your spoils and recover your weapon. The fight was short but the short look you got at the chicken sized rat's body showed glistening teeth and nails that would probably have upset your day.

Your brother appears to have the rats well in hand. Two or three get free for everyone he kills but his strategy of biting them by the head and flicking them so the head comes off seems to be working for preventing injury. Wading in with you macuahuitl and your own teeth you figure you can help clean out what's left. A minute or two later the tide of rats has stopped and you have to spend time tracking down the corpses that got a little more loft when their head came off than either of you intended. All told you end up with an easy 30 or so rats. Most of them are even big for rats, or huge. Only one other matches your chicken sized monster though, and it isn't shiny. Its head popped off like the others. Neither of you are injured, more than you were to begin with anyway, but you're both covered in rat juices. You think you're going to need a bath.

The tree is still on fire...

>That's it for tonight guys. I've been struggling for the last couple hours so I think I need to call it. Hope there was something enjoyable in there.
