You waste a couple of minutes more chatting with Amata and Zaan before leaving. As if remembering something she hadn't thought about, Amata sticks a folded note, pulled from an internal pocket of her white sorcerous cloak, and hands it to you before you depart.

You, Tia and Radiant Starfall walk out of Tianna Castle's sorcery room and close the heavy door behind yourselves, leaving the two sorcerers to whatever demon-summoning they have planned.

You're not... 100% sure that leaving the building of what you imagined to be a holy city in the hands of demons is a good idea, but everyone seems to be quite sure of what they're doing.

As you climb back up the stairs and reach the castle's ground floor, you glance outside a window at the dark sky. The eastern horizon is still dark and clouded.

At dawn, you're supposed to summon Ocean Father, privately, together with Mikahil, and work out some oaths. You could be scoring a powerful ally, but you need to know, first, what exactly he needs from you. His half of the bargain.

But you've still got some time before the sixth day before the Silver Prince's attack dawns.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. Queen of Gem, now ruling the western island of Tianna. You have gathered a lot of allies and friends, and have a powerful Manse under construction.
But Tianna is actually an artificial island, built around a First Age Titan: an almighty flying fortress built in an ancient, forgotten age, and although this is kept secret, two Deathlords are seeking to obtain it.
The Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine, ghost of your past incarnation, seeked it as a weapon to cut her ties to the Neverborn. But you have persuaded her to try and seek redemption in the eyes of the Sun in other ways, and count her as an unlikely ally.
But now the Silver Prince is coming, to punish her and claim the Titan for himself in the name of Oblivion. And this looks like a battle you won't be able to talk your way out of...

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Solar%20Quest

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

Of course, if we could do that, we could presumably do the opposite: leave everyone with the impression that that they matter, and that they're good people doing good work, beloved in the eyes of Divine Maka and of the Unconquered Sun.
>>
>>38655311
We do want that of course, I at least believe that's the case involving Maka.

That she really does care for everyone, she loves her friends and family, she cares about and appreciates the work our mortals do, that she's cares about the well-being of her subjects as a queen.

I like to believe we didn't lie to Rubel back when we spoke on our way to see the OceanFather.

You can't really tiger train two people at once. Also, Pyre Spark might be more important. We can bump her Zenith up to 4, and make her one of the most inspiring preachers in all of creation.

I think if I remember right about everyone's stats, we can do everyone up to decent stats.

Pyre only needs one more day of training to be done, Regis is at 3 Phys/2 Dawn so one more day for that and then we can train his Zenith when we have time for that. Millian on the other hand will take the most time, turns out she's at Phys 2/ Dawn 1 so it'll take her 3 days to get up to good fighting spirit.

Five days total to get them the minimum required ready, that leaves 2 days plus however many Ocean Father can delay the fleet by to train there Zenith

You walk around the corridors of the castle, after parting ways with Starfall (somewhere along the way: After a while you just noticed she wasn't there with you anymore).

"...So. Sharks." You mumble to Tia, making some idle conversation.

"Sharks?" Tia wonders.

"...Did you know that Zaan and Valeriana are an item?"

Tia frowns, probably trying to understand what "an item" means. "Oh." She brightens up. "You mean they're married."

"No- I mean, not in that sens- well, maybe in YOUR sens- Well. You know what I meant."

She nods. "Talon once told me that even if Creation is really, really huge, Solars and their Lunar mates still end up meeting somehow. There's a force pulling them together. A force stronger than any other."

"Destiny?" You ask.

She shakes her head. "Love."

You look out of the windows, at the clouds racing against the night sky.

That was surprisingly romantic.

Time to completely ruin the mood.

"So, about shark penises."

Tia smiles, puzzled. "...Did you see Zaan's?" She asks, matter-of-factly.

You shake your head. "I was wondering if it would be kind of like that one from that beastman you ate."

Man, this conversation is getting weird fast.

"Sort of, but Zaan has both of them. And a bit bigger."

"...What do you mean, both of them." You shake your head. "Wait. Did you and Zaan-"

She shrugs. "Old story. Before you arrived in Tianna. We were both lonely." She tilts her head sideways. "...Do you want me to eat a shark's Heart's Blood?"

There's really only one possible answer to Tia asking you that question while having that look of thrilled, eager anticipation on her face.

After a few minutes, you arrive in front of Irene's lab's door. You weren't sure if you should see first her or Millian and Regis, but you should probably let them rest a bit more, you resolved.

Sharks actually have two penises - or a bifurcated penis, depending on your perspective - with a small fin at the base of either one.

Look it up.
>>
Well, time to go for an oldie but a goodie, You bring out the latest iteration of your old tabard outfit, now with a gold trim, guaranteed water-laser-proof, and adjusted in width and length, complemented with the appropriate amount of jewelry and decoration.

Tia makes a sort-of surprised-satisfied noise seeing that outfit back. You cannot resist the temptation to strike a pose in front of her.

"...I'll go get that shark." She nods gravely, and leaves, blazing with determination.

Oh, well. She's like this. You knock and hear a "Come in!" from inside.

The lab is the usual mess of incredibly complex machinery, blueprints and tools, but now what surprises you is that Millian (in her work clothes) is apparently taking apart her magitech cannons and firearms and reassembling them as...

Well, no, they still look like sort-of weapons, but the awkwardness of their construction really suggests the idea that they're not supposed to be used in combat.

"Maka." She greets you with a nod. "Everything's going fine on my end, if that's what you've come to check." She adds, with some pride.

The piles of empty coffee mugs scattered around are a testament to her determination to finish her part of the work in time. You'd expect to see her all haggard and tired, but, despite everything, she seems fresh as a rose. You guess coffee really is magic, or at least has that effect on her?

You do a light spin and a pose and wink. "What do you think of this?" You ask Irene.

She scratches her chin, probably taking this more seriously than you intended. "...It's a bit longer and wider on the chest, but a tighter fit. You had a golden trim added, with those decorations here and there, and the ring latch around your neck now bends slightly around your shoulders to make it more comfortable - a nice touch. Compared to the old version, the thigh-highs also have the trim, and ride quite a bit higher up the leg." She points. "And your earring used to have two gold bars hanging from it, but now it has three. Overall, an impressive work. Valeriana, I guess. I don't know anyone else who has this craftsmanship."

...You'll admit, you're impressed.

"And you're absolutely stunning in it too." She adds with a smile, going back to tinker with her stuff.

"What are you working on, exactly?"

"To speed up the construction effort in Pearl, we need to automate and speed up three very time and work intensive operations: heating metals to their melting point, bending and machining metal, and cutting stone." She snaps a part in a larger assembly with deft hand movements and a forceful CLACK noise.

"Our essence weapons weren't designed for this kind of precise work, of course, but there's no reason we can't adapt them." She rips a wire from it, and sparks fly around the room, startling you. She seems unconcerned even as a few of them bounce off her, harmlessly.

"Besides, I think that there's something deeply symbolic and uplifting, about dismantling tools of war to remake them into construction machines."

"...You're putting them back together once we'll be done, right?"

"Oh, yes, totally. We need the kablooie." She screws a new bit of wire in place while saying so.

You nod sagely. "The kablooie is indeed good."

"I've learned something interesting about one of your soldiers." You tell her, peeking under the cowl of a mean-looking piece of machinery propped up against a wall. Gears and wires.

"Oh? Who?"

"Do you know of someone called Radiant Starfall?"

"...I'd remember a name that unique."

"What about Janet Deer."

"Wow. That's..."

"You know her?" You ask.

She shakes her head, looking down ad the machine she's working on. "...There are probably a thousand Deer in Tianna. It's the most common surname. There might be more humans with that surname than actual deers in the forest. And Janet is... well, there must be a dozen or so Janet Deer in Tianna. Maybe twice that."

You whistle. "No wonder she doesn't like it."

"...Was she in the Fifth Talon?"

"Uh, no idea."

"I think I remember a Deer in the fifth talon. Don't remember if her name is Janet, though. About... As tall as this." She holds a hand up on level with your neck. "Black hair cut short, bit of an attitude but gets things done...? I think her talonlord suggested her to me for a promotion."

"Nah." You shake your head. "She's about... this tall." You hold a hand lower, at about Irene's nose height. "Green hair, very long. Dark eyes. Nimble, but a lightweight..."

"...really shy?"

"Yes!"

"...Wears a pair of tinted goggles?"

"Yeah! What are they for?"

"She has some sort of eye condition or something. She has an allowance to wear them in uniform. Alright, now I remember. She's in... third talon? I didn't hear much about her."

"Well, she Exalted as a Night Caste a couple months back and took out a demon-worshiping cult here in Tianna." You smile.

Irene stops her work and puts down her tools. "Really?"

"Yup. Goes by the name Radiant Starfall now. Still wears the uniform. Well, a bit modded. She's been taking out undead spies in Tianna without us even noticing. Long story short, she's on our side now."

"Wow." She goes back to her work. "You Solars sure do sprout like mushrooms nowadays."

"...Does Tianna now officially have more Solars than dragon-blooded?" You wonder.

"Nope." She replies. "There's mom, me, Samiel, Zareen, Raj- oh. I guess Rajan's still missing in action, eh?"

You nod.

She starts counting on her fingers, and stops at ten.

"That many?" You wonder.

"There were some of them living in town or in the villages but not part of, well, the war effort. Not in the armed forces, or administration, or whatever. Some Realm rejects, some random exaltations from weak bloodlines around Tianna. Amata did a recruitment drive and encouraged them all to introduce themselves, pledge allegiance, and join up. Plus, there's some that have always been here and you just never spent time talking to. Some of them have been at some of the meetings, the war council before the Lintha expedition, stuff like that."

You vaguely remember some people, but never had time to talk to everyone.

"So, I've got two Exalted officers under me in the Engineers, and Samiel's got two under him in the Army. The Navy's the only branch of service without anyone now that we're without Rajan. The others are under Amata, in admin and bureaucratic stuff."

"Yeah. The last few weeks or so have been rather hectic." She nods. "Everyone's so busy. Besides, I'm sure that once things calm down, with all the cool stuff that we've been making, we might get more dragon-blooded immigrants here."

"We will?" You ask her.

"Remember what Zareen said to you when you met? That thing about her looking for a place to be?"

You nod.

"With the Realm's pressure, it can be hard for a Dragon-Blooded who doesn't want to join it to find a place for his own. I mean, an Exalted doesn't want to settle for less. He wants to have more. And that's pretty normal, right? After all, he's not a mortal. So he'll flock to where he thinks he has a chance." She flips the little gizmo around and inspects it. "But a Dragon-Blooded is by nature and instinct extremely gregarious. I think it's different with you Celestials. At least, I haven't seen anything that can suggest that. But we're driven to... look for a place where we belong. We want to be a gear in a machine." She shows you what she was examining: a tiny, intricate mess of minute gears, wheels, cogs, pinions, chains and pulleys.

"You do?"

Maka said several time she wasn't the person of this vision, and that she won't be defined by it.

I could imagine the Tyrant not trusting dragonblood, though.

Now I'm wondering if Amata's previous exaltation wasn't one of the Tyrant's would-be killers.

That's not how Dragon-Blooded Exaltations work, they're genetic, not passed on like Celestial Exaltations
>>
>>38658014
Dragon-Blood Exaltations don't actually work like that, not like everyone else's where there is a fixed number of Dragon-Bloods possible.

As long as you have the DB "gene" so to speak, you have a chance at becoming one. Through no power other than the one in there blood.

Only Celestials have inherited exaltations. Terrestrials are born to it, getting a fresh one when they exalt.

"Whoever made up the idiom that "being a cog in a machine" means being small and unimportant in the grand scheme of things is a moron who never passed mechanical engineering 101." She says with scorn.

With a screwdriver, she gently plays one of the tiny wheels back and forth, and you see the entire assembly move, each at its own pace and speed and in its own manner and direction.

"Look at this." She says, and applies just enough strength with the screwdriver to push the cog a little bit backwards on its axle, moving it out of alignment by the tiniest fraction of a millimeter.

"Now look at this." Then, she tries once more to move a gear, and less than a quarter of the machinery moves with it. The movement locks after a short bit, and then the entire block just refuses to move in either direction afterwards, some invisible damage somewhere unseen blocking up the entire contraption.

"When you're a well-placed cog in a well-oiled machine, you're at your most valuable." She concludes, taking the assembly apart and putting it back together with quick movements. She knew perfectly well where the damage was, of course. After a quick fix and sliding the cog back in its place, everything works perfectly.

"...Thank you, Irene." That was actually educational, and pretty cool to see.

She smiles. "Mom sometimes worries a bit too much. I've spent some time with Smoke. She's alright. A bit crazy, but alright."

"You have?"

"Well, I need to know the woman who's dating my brother." She grins in a threatening way.

You head back out of the room and close the door silently, checking that the "do not disturb" ribbon is still in place on the doorknob.

Safe.

Now.
As amazing as this might sound, Valeriana managed to even sew pockets in this outfit. There are a couple of almost invisible ones in the tabard, in fact, and you put the paper Amata handed you in one of them

You pull it out and check it. It's scribbled in a hurry, in Amata's crisp, sharp hand.

"Sent message to Karas- reply: "Tell sis not to worry, I know what I'm doing. I'll be back with time to spare. Oh, P.S., took the Gloria, hope no one will miss it."

So your little brother has gone out trying to pick up girls (that may or may not exist), and has even stolen your best boat to do so in style.

You crumple up the paper.

Alright, you ARE impressed that he has the balls of doing that.

But you're also quite mad. Even if he promises to be back in time, and with an intact Gloria, he would've still been much more helpful here.

What is with him and this weird idea he got, anyway? Did he just see this "lunar mate" thing with you and Tia, and Mikahil and Fivetails, and decide that it was as simple as breaking into one of their meetings and asking?

...well, okay, he's never had a stable relationship with someone, mostly because of his own airheadedness, so he might be a bit frustrated. But still, that's absolutely no excuse.

If, IF, and that's a big if, he actually manages to find useful allies for the fight, you might let hum off the hook with a bit of yelling, or shaming him a bit around.

Just to remind him who's the older sister in this outfit.

*sigh* Why are siblings so annoying?

You glance out of the windows, seeing the first vague traces of aurora on the eastern horizon. The sky begins to brighten up, and the stars are chased away.

You pull Ocean Father's pearl out of your pocket (all items in the pockets of an outfit are shifted to the pockets of the outfit currently worn, it seems) and look at it for a second. It's a perfect sphere, smooth and shiny.

(sure)

You knock and enter Mikahil's room. Rather cramped, all books and ledgers, and a vast assortment of what you can only imagine being souvenirs of some kinds. A cavalry saber, a half-burned naval dress uniform, a tribal mask, a dried and preserved flower in a picture frame...

It's always hard to tell when your Eclipse is actually tired or sleep-deprived. His face looks like that naturally, so it's a very hard call to make. Still, he seems reasonably awake, even though he was lying in bed as you entered.

Fully clothed, too.

"Taking a nap?"

"We don't all have endurance-increasing Charms." He yawns. "And don't think I haven't tried."

You hold up the sea-gem. "I've got the pearl."

He picks up, from his room's desk, a small clay pitcher full. "And I've got the saltwater."

"You ready?" as soon as he nods, you drop the pearl in the water.

It instantly vanishes, like it turned transparent all of sudden, or actually dissolved.

Suddenly, humidity increases. Temperature drops. The room fills with fog. Mikahil lets out a groan of realization. "Aw. All my books are gonna get drenched, aren't they?"

From out of the pitcher, a jet of water erupts, washing on the floor and forming the shape of Ocean Father. Even though he's much smaller than how he appears at sea, he's still taller than you.

"My greetings, Maka." The god says. "I respond to your summons."

"Greetings." You reply. "This is Mikahil, my circlemate."

"I know him." He replies, nodding at him. "How's it going, ol'chap."

"The cows are on the green and the dice are loaded, as usual."

The two bump their fists and then perform an odd, elaborate handshake.

To your mute confusion, Mikahil just shrugs in reply. "It's a long story." He turns back to Ocean Father. "Sorry for not dropping by when Maka called you while we were returning from the Black Atoll."

"It's okay." The god nods. "Driving a ship is a hard job."

"No thanks to you."

They both giggle.

I figured it would be Bureaucracy - the skill for making contracts, deals, lawyering, and other such things. Or maybe even Socialize. Like I said, it ain't no thang, since the pool is the same size either way, it just seemed like rewording contracts was obviously under Eclipse's domain.

"Wait. I have a few questions first." You point out.

"Oh?" He doesn't seem happy about being interrupted, but he lets you continue.

"...First of all: is this item a dangerous weapon? Something that could bring harm to Creation?" You're suddenly worried that he's talking about the Titan.

"It's merely a personal matter." He points out. "The item is not any more dangerous than any Daiklave. But I desire it beyond anything else, for a purely personal reason. I will include this statement in the Oath as an assurance."

"And... it's an item, right? Not part of a living creature. You're not asking me to get someone's heart, or-"

"No, heavens no."

"What if this item is something I already own? Or something I desperately need as well."

"Then this Oath will force you to give it to me."

"You could name anything then!" You protest.

He groans. "I am not doing this because I wish to steal from you, Maka. I am no thief. But I must have this item no matter what. In exchange for you turning it over to me, or even helping with its retrieval, you will have me as an ally. Is there any one item you own which you believe would be more valuable than my eternal gratitude and debt?"

"Alright, I swear."

Mikahil takes both of your hands in his, and a flash of light emerges from the glow of his anima.

Characters in the ancient writing of the Old Realm appear one after another, impressed in gold light in mid-air. You can't read them, but you know what they're saying, and you understand their binding oath. You are truly sworn to silence now.

Ocean Father sighs, like a giant weight has just been lifted off his shoulders. "...The item is Black Depths Foretold."

You arc an eyebrow. "What is it?"

"It's an ancient knife made from black jade.... or, rather than a knife, it's more like a shard or splinter, half of it wrapped in cloth, raw and sharp."

"...Why would a god as powerful as you fear such a weapon?"

"Because that weapon will be my death."

He said it with such certainly, such confidence, that both you and Mikahil are taken aback.

"...Ocean Father?" He asks.

"It's a preordained fact. My doom has been sealed long ago, and that blade is the one that will slay me." He informs you, sounding like he's talking about the weather.

"...Isn't this going to be a self-fulfilling prophecy? Since you know of this knife, you seek it, and therefore will inevitably come in contact with it?" The Eclipse tries to suggest.

"In my place", Ocean Father replies to him, "what would you do? Just ignore the prophecy and hope nothing bad happens? Or try and fight it with all your might?"

Mikahil sits down. "...I'd do the same thing you're doing, probably."

"Can you dispel this... curse, or phophecy, or whatever it is, by coming in possession of the knife? Or destroying it?"

(cont.)
>>
"I don't know." He admits. "I just know that I intend to do everything I can to make sure it cannot be used against me."

He points at you. "This is the second part of the Oath, Maka. Swear that you will search for it and, if found, turn it over to me, and I will aid you against the Silver Prince. Find even a rumor on its location, and I shall reward you with a ransom fitting for a Princess of the Earth. Uncover it and put it in no condition to harm me, and I shall be your loyal servant for one hundred years."

Quick question about the Oath thing. Can they be broken, or is the person in question absolutely forced to uphold it until the conditions are fulfilled and whatnot? Are there variants that do force the parties involved to uphold it without any option to break it?

>I swear.
>>38662055
Only Infernals can break this oath
>>
Rolled 7 (1d10)

>>38662055
They can be broken freely.

But if you break them, then they cause a certain number of future rolls to automatically botch at the worst possible moment, no matter what charms or powers were used on that roll.

So, if we reneg, get ready to be sabotaged by fate and reality itself at the worst possible moment until the oathbreaker's curse runs dry.
>>
Rolled 5 (1d10)

>>38662055
Any oath that is sanctified by an eclipse CAN be broken. It's just really really unwise to do so. If you break an Oath sworn by an Eclipse solar then you will be plagued with all sorts of catastrophes.
>>
>>38662055
They can be broken at anytime, but bad stuff happens. Namely Automatic botches, which are basically crit fails, at the most inconvenient times a number of times equal to Mikahil's Essence
>>
>>38662082
>>38662101

Wait, so which one is it? I don't mean consequence-free, I mean just in general, can you break it (even if there's consequences for doing so)?

Heh the oath allows us to return the knife to him...via his back.
>>
>>38662144
Oh, I meant Infernals can undo the oath and replace it. The oath doesn't actually FORCE you to obey it, but it punishes you very hard.
>>
Rolled 3 (1d10)

>>38662144
>can you break it (even if there's consequences for doing so)?
Yes. Freely. You just have to suffer the consequence.

Infernals let you get out of it consequence-free.
>>
>>38662016
>one hundred years
It's a great offer and all, but that's kind of chump change for a Celestial Exalt.
>>
>>38662121
>>38662122

Ah. I'm trying to figure out what kind of oath is binding Amata to secrecy about the Titan, as my Exalted-fu isn't perfect and I want to know if there's the possibility of her being forced to backstab us at the worst possible opportunity, or if she can opt out by consequences.

Basically, how many Oath types are there and how many can actually force the parties involved to undertake the actions sworn?
>>
>>38662202
Lots of magical things, but Amata wasn't under an Eclipse Oath, if she was she already broke it.

Eclipse Oaths don't follow just the letter of the wording, but the spirit of it.
>>
Rolled 8 (1d10)

>>38662202
A capital 'O' Oath is an Eclipse's Oath, and it can be freely broken, but suffered.

It's hard to get anything else resembling an oath to actually stick to an exalt. You can force binding oaths out of Faeries by having them swear on their Graces (which humans/exalts don't have), and demons are bound by the Conditions of Surrender, which Amata was invoking earlier to bind that demon.

Basically, whatever Oath she made, it was probably to an Eclipse, or something like it.
>>
>>38662202
>Basically, how many Oath types are there and how many can actually force the parties involved to undertake the actions sworn?

Hard to tell. Maka certainly doesn't know.

Mikahil's oath can be broken, but whoever does so is punished by heaven, generally with a turn of terrible luck that causes some sort of dramatic, sometimes ironic fate. In game terms, some rolls, at the discretion of the game master, just end up being botches regardless of rolls, successes and charns.

Also, Infernals don't exist in this Quest, so don't concern yourselves with them.
>>
>>38662016
Perhaps ask for a permanent Alliance instead of this temp loyal servant stuff
>>
Rolled 3 (1d10)

>>38662311
This is just the beginning of our future alliance with Ocean Father. We can't expect him to swear service in perpetuity just yet.
>>
>>38662186
Just because we live for longer doesn't mean one hundred years is anything to sneeze at.
>>
>>38662311

Exaltedfag, I love your quest to death, I really do, but your vagueness has doomed me to paranoia for the remainder of this mystery remaining unsolved.

Now I'm going to have to get my hands on some Exalted books and research Sidereal stuff to make sure they don't get any of those. Since that's the only possible grouping I can think of that would even know about the Titan as-is and by proxy the only other group that could swear Amata into secrecy.
