(Firstly, I'm going to be reposting the updates from last thread since there weren't very many.)

You slightly rouse from the comfort of your sleep. There’s some unseen weight upon your chest, so you roll over and it is soon gone.

It’s quite warm around you actually, you’re well used to the feeling of your covers on your bare skin, but you feel compelled to shift into a cooler spot on your bed.

When you move, something else seems to press on the bed next to you.

Did you forget to put your tome back on your desk again?

No. You didn't.

You quickly begin to awaken, but you’re careful not to show any signs of it.

For a brief moment you wonder if the intruder may be one of your house mates, but a cool breeze flows in from the window, sending shivers through your exposed skin.

Again you never leave the window open at night, it gets plenty cold with it closed.

Not good, you feel whatever’s next to you slowly make its way closer to you. It’s too light to be a full-grown adult, but what would a child be doing climbing through your window in the middle of the night?

You feel your heart beat heavily against the mattress and you fear that its sound will betray you. Whatever it is doesn’t hear you over its loud breathing.

You’re in quite the awkward position right now. You’re back is toward whatever’s on your bed, and your firmly pressed on top of your right arm. All you have now is the element of surprise, but given that you do surprise whatever it is that’s next to you, what will you do after?

You feel hot heavy breath moisten the back of your neck.

~
>>
>>38658983

That’s close enough for whatever this is.

You roll out bed as quickly as you can, and hit the ground quite hard. It actually takes a few seconds for you to recover from that extreme maneuver. You look up soon after.

The small bizarre creature crouching on your bed is illuminated in the moonlight streaming through the window. Immediately you recognize it as the “pet” that Manolo and his companion brought along with them.

A wave of panic washes over you, and suddenly a small flame ignites around your right hand, bringing in more light into the room.
The creature cowers back from your fire, but it does little else.

The two of you tensely stare at each other, waiting for the other to act. Come to think of it, if he wanted to harm you, he could have easily have done when you were on the ground. Why else would he be here if not to harm or kill you?

You slowly lower your hand and let the flames calm themselves. The creature shifts back to its original position, but does nothing else yet again.

You sigh and let the flames go out completely. It watches you as you approach your dresser. If you’re going to be doing whatever it is that you’re doing now, you sure as hell don’t want to do it in the nude.

You wrap your cloak tightly around yourself. “Why are you here?”

[1/2]
>>
>>38659014

It suddenly flicks its bandaged head up, as if it understood your words. Perhaps it does.

It quickly points to itself, than to you, and then to itself again. It scurries in a quick circle on your bed and then goes back to just looking at you.

Your mind swiftly tries to piece together what it’s trying to tell you, but mostly you just want that thing off of your bed.

“I don’t understand what you just told me.” You lean forward slightly. “Did your masters send you to talk to me?”

The creature furiously shakes its head. It repeats its earlier gestures with its hands, but this time before pointing back to you, it holds up all of its fingers.

It and you, or rather multiple of it? You doubt he's saying multiple of you.

Something suddenly changes in the air coming in from the window. It’s almost imperceptible, but somehow everything feels slightly…heavier.

In response to the change, the creature abruptly begins to shake in a violent manner. It thrashes on your bed, banging its head as if it were trying to get something out.

This isn’t good. You’re sure that it doesn’t like whatever just changed at all.
>>
>>38659049

The creature’s thrashing sends itself flying into your floor.

“Laurent!” You shout at the top of your lungs. You take a few hesitant steps toward the creature, it came here to tell you something, and maybe it can continue if it just calms down.

You gently stroke its side. “Easy there, it’s okay.” You repeat as you watch it struggle with some invisible force.

Suddenly it stops its spasms and rolls onto its feet.

At that moment Laurent bursts open your door, the creature jumps in shock and then lunges straight at you.

It clamps its long thin fingers around your throat, strangling you with all its might. It sniffs the air madly, as you desperately try to pry its hands of you; your panic making things even worse than they are.

A sickening snap and then suddenly you can breathe again.

The creature collapses to the ground, its bandaged head completely turned in the opposite direction, its message dying with it.

You look up at Laurent, who’s already shyly looking away from your state of undress, but is surveying everywhere you aren’t.

“That thing came alone.” He still doesn’t look at you. “Are you hurt?”

You rub your throat, it hurts rather badly, but the pain is already starting to dissipate. “I’ll be fine…” You pause for a moment and then look at the creature’s corpse. “Get this thing out of my house.”

He dutifully bends and picks it up. Without another word, he goes to leave your room.

“Laurent.” You call after him.

He tensely freezes at your words, and clutches the creature, almost as if for protection.

“Good job protecting me.” You praise him genuinely.

Your words seem to only increase his tension, he walks out into the hall muttering and quite embarrassed. “Thank you.” The door closes behind him.

You walk over and shut the window. Damn it, now you need to buy a lock or something.
>>
>>38659079
~
You had no trouble going back to sleep, but morning came swiftly regardless. You yawn and with bleary eyes, munch on some bread.

The creature has been long disposed of physically, but he still lingers in your mind.

What is the meaning of his message? Did it have any meaning at all? If you had to guess, you’d say it was a warning, but for what exactly? The only thing that’s certain is that Manolo and his companion are dead men if you ever see them again. You doubt they’d have the courage to show themselves in the light of day, given how they cowered against Laurent.

You want to put your mind off such nasty business. Your food needs restocking, especially now that there’s four of you and maybe you can find something to bar up your window.

You had planned to spend some time with one of your housemates last night, and this shopping trip is the perfect opportunity.
>>
>>38659113

A good chance to get to stock up, plus more excuse for not having to carry things.

You finish off your meal and glance at Laurent. “You’re coming with me to go buy some things.”

You switch over to your apprentices. “You two know the drill, set up the tanks and the candles. After that you’re free until it’s time.”

The two of them nod and go off to their respective tasks. You have to say that you’re quite happy with how much control you have over all of them. How it got to be like this, you can only wonder. As well as only wonder how long things will stay like this.

~

You and your guardian set out on this chilly morning to the merchant’s crossroad.

Much to your disapproval, Laurent is wearing the same set of clothes he had on the day before, maybe you could get him a few new sets, just so people don’t think you’re not paying the guy. Well, you aren’t paying him at all, but people don’t have to know that.

“You’re sure that you brought all your belongings with you?” You throw up a skeptical eyebrow even while fully knowing the answer.

[1/2]
>>
>>38659249

Laurent keeps his gaze turned away. A clear enough answer for you.

You groan and quicken your pace to the crossroad, no time to waste if you want to help this one get his life in order.

The usually somber market is bustling with activity this morning. Various workers carry large crates from here to there, and a larger number of shoppers move from stand to stand like herded sheep.

The whole sight is quite foreign, actually. This market usually only caters to those that need basic living essentials and Occultists, but this is far more people than you have ever seen grace this market before.

Though all the hustle and bustle you see a single figure forcefully giving commands to the various workers passing by.

It’s Ali.

You remember that you had intended to pay her a visit, but you were expecting a casual chat by her small stand. Why has so much changed in so little time.
Laurent catches you staring through the masses. “Do you know her?”

You let out a small breath. “I’m not sure anymore.”

Now’s a good a time as any to catch up you suppose, since you don’t know how long she’ll be ordering people around. But remembering how your last conversation went, you’re slightly suspicious that you might be playing into her hand somehow.

Right, so the previous thread didn't end on a pleasant note, but I am very hopeful for today.

What most of my players want is to simply play the quest, so let's all do our best to do that. If you want that as well, then PLEASE, no sameposting, no inciting each other, and generally don't disrupt the thread.

Simply put, I want to move on with this quest. If you don't want that as well, then please feel free to stop playing my quest. That's all.

I totally agree. I wish romance options didn't stir up so much drama. I don't know what it is about them that drives people to samefag, it's not like it's the main focus of the quest anyway.

She did say for you to stop by and pay her a visit, and you’ve got plenty of things to take care of yourself, so it’s now or never. Well, maybe not never…

Without another word you begin weaving your way through the crowd, with your guardian diligently following behind you.

The blonde woman seems to sense your presence and turns around just as you walk up to her. She wears her confident smile almost perfectly, appears to have been expecting you.

“Sophia, so nice of you to finally show up.” Her sharp eyes look over every aspect of your body, and then turn to Laurent. She grins “My, my, and to think for all those years I had you pegged as a loner.”

Her whole demeanor from her posture to her voice seems more self-assured, add that to the fact that she just called you by your full name for the first time, and indeed, this person seems to become more and more of a stranger every day.

“Hello Alicia.” You smile to return the favor. “Allow me to introduce my guardian, Laurent.” You tilt your hand toward the waving man. You take a moment before you continue. Although, it wouldn’t be the first time one of your assumptions was incorrect.”

For a brief moment you see something ignite deep within her eyes, but just like your first pyromancy flame, it was all too fleeting. Hardly a breath goes by before she collects herself and looms slightly into your personal space.

Prideful, isn’t she?

Laurent shrinks away from the two of you greeting each other. He has no place in this at all.

You’re the first one to start again. “Seems like you’ve been busy.” You look around to all the workers going about their business around you.

“The successful tend to be.” She replies without breaking eye contact. “So I see the two of you have the time for some shopping.”

You remain silent on that one.

“Looking for Gilligan since he has…had all of your credit?” She tilts her head forward waiting for your response.

Even more questions, you’re careful not to seem overly interested.

“Had?” You ask nonchalantly, not allowing yourself to get riled up.

Ali grins wildly, but then puts on a sullen façade. “It seems him and his new apprentice have met with an unfortunate accident a few nights ago. Murderous bandits.” She shakes her head disapprovingly. “Such a shame, but I was noble enough to take over his debts and stock.”

She pulls out a small notebook and flips through it slowly. “Ten gallons of blood credit?” She looks up at you with devious eyes.

It’s supposed to be fifteen, that of which you’re sure of, but the way she looks at you is telling you she’s sure of it as well.

You don’t care if she’s expecting you to say something, you earned all of that credit though your hard work.

“The balance is fifteen gallons of blood.” You respond firmly. “Thirty to begin with minus fifteen spent.”

“Ahh, of course.” She snaps her notebook shut without making a note. “You’ll have to forgive me, I’ve been so busy managing all these little stagehands.” She motions to everyone around her. “But to come into thirty gallons of blood…” Her gaze attempts to pierce into you. “I remember how hard you had to save up for your first ten.”

Your heart skips a beat, but you keep your composure. One thing that hasn’t changed is that she’s sharp, maybe even dangerously so.

“I got lucky.” You comment and quickly move to change the topic. “You seem to be acting differently, Ali.” You take a few glances at all the activity around you. “Did something happen?”

“Many things happened, Soph.” She brushes her hair out of her face. “But, I am more myself than I have ever been, let me assure you of that.” She takes a long moment to look at you. “I would say that it’s you who’s acting strangely.”

“What do you mean by that?” You ask fervently.

She smiles and then shakes her head. “Forgive me again, I sometimes forget that we need actors for stage play.”

There she goes again with her cryptic words. You wonder if you ever even want to figure out what she’s referring to.

You sigh, and then remember why you came here to begin with. “I suppose you’re still a merchant?” You ask, not letting your weariness show.

“Among many things, now.” She places a hand on her hip. Though her clothes you see that she’s carrying an object there, but it’s concealed from view.

[1/2]
>>
>>38662160

You inform her of the things you need including: food, something to board up a window, and some clothes for Laurent.

“Five gallons of credit.” She holds up five fingers immediately after you finish. “I’ll have it delivered to your house later today.”

You’re surprised at how cheap she’s selling everything to you, but you’re not one to complain about that.

“Done.” You shake her hand, noticing that her previous injuries have completely vanished.

Her eyes glimmer with something insidious at your realization, but stop when you release her hand.

Ali turns her attention to Laurent. “What a sight.” She says admiring his form. “You know, if things don’t work out with your current boss, I could always use your help.” She presses closer into his personal space. "I'd pay you much better too."

Laurent shrinks from her like you’ve only seen him do with you.

“Ahem.” You clear your throat to snap him out of it.

Ali laughs softly. “We should get back to our busy lives, but this was nice, Soph.” She finally takes a step back from Laurent.

Nice isn’t what you would call it at all.

“It was. Until next time?” You tilt your head slightly upon asking.

“I look forward to it.” Without another word Ali fades into the crowd, but her voice can still be heard, firmly giving orders.

Having had enough of the crowd you motion for Laurent to follow you, and head back home.

Once the roar of the market has faded to a dull hum, Laurent turns to ask you something.

“Is she someone we should look out for too?” He asks with an unusual note of concern on his voice.

You’ve never considered it. You’ve known each other for years and in the past you kind of bonded through your mutual struggles, but now that so many things have changed, you’re not sure what to think anymore.

You look back at the bustling market looming behind you. “As a guardian, you should watch out for everyone. But her…” You look back forward. “I have my suspicions, but first I need to figure out some things about her.” You turn to meet his gaze. “Everyone who seeks power is dangerous.”

“Even you?” Laurent asks without breaking eye contact.

You turn to the road ahead of you without answering him. He quietly apologizes for his question.

Especially me.

~

You sit in your parlor absentmindedly watching Matthias copy from the Necromancy tome. Aya calmly naps on your couch next to him. Matthias earlier gave you his assurance that she would be fine so long as it was just the three of you.

“That place across the street still infested with rats?” He asks quietly without looking up from his writing.

You snort while suppressing your laughter. “Sure is.” You respond and lazily sink further into your chair.

You see a slight smile form on his face. “Remember that time we tried to play chicken under there, but your Grandfather stopped it, and beat the crap out of the both of us?”

[1/2]
>>
>>38663330

How could you forget? For as old as he was at the time, he could still hit like a young man.

You push yourself up. “I only agreed to do it to prove that I would go further than you.”

Matthias finally looks up at you. “Like hell.” He grins cheekily. “Do you want to go again?”

“No!” You respond in mirthful disgust.

Matthias begins to laugh, but quiets himself down when he sees Aya starting to rouse. “Good, because I don’t want to go either.” He comments softly and then turns his gaze to the sleeping figure next to him.

In the quiet afternoon light, he watches her rest for a long time, even forgetting about his own work.

“Sometimes I wonder what I should do with her.” He closes his notebook shut with one hand. “For some reason I feel like I’m living some sort of unnatural lie.”

His uncharacteristic seriousness catches your attention. You lean forward. “What does she want?”

He silently broods over your question. “She never answers me when I ask her that. It’s like she’s trying to avoid something.”

You shrug your shoulders. “What do you want?”

Matthias turns to look at you. “I’m only answering that because it’s you.” He looks away. “I want things to stay how they are now.”

You laugh softly. “Then what’s the problem?”

“She’s not supposed to be here!” He whispers seriously. “It isn’t what’s natural.”

That word has always rubbed you the wrong way, it reeks of complacency. But your personal emotions shouldn’t factor into this, or should they?

Aya drowsily sits up on the couch looking at the both of you. She turns to Matthias and just stares at him blinking heavily. Finally she opens her mouth and points directly at it.

Matthias sighs and stands up. “We are long overdue for lunch.” He helps her off the couch, steadying her as she wobbles for a few seconds. “We’ll be back to visit soon, I’m almost done copying the whole thing.”

You look over the two of them hold onto each other. “You know, you can visit after you’ve finished too.”

Matthias and Aya head for the front door. “Of course I know that. I wouldn’t pass on a free meal.” He looks up in thought. “Well maybe I would if it was cooked by you.”

You nudge the both of them out of your house. “Get out of here, you bum!” You call out as the two of them return to their own home.

Once they’re out of view you turn your gaze to the quickly setting sun. It’s about time to begin.

“Direction, choice of direction. Direction.”

Visions of the two areas where you first delved come pouring vividly into your mind. They begin to match together spatially and burn into the image of the overlapping circles you’ve seen before.

You snap back to reality. You don’t know when but you’ve collapsed to the ground and started into a fit of coughing.

The hairpin has blessed with more of its knowledge.

Hardly taking any time to recover, you excitedly rush back inside to record the vision into your journal.

You’re practically shaking while you hungrily write. If what you saw is true, then you may be the first one to have a rough idea how the other realms are laid out.
“Control of direction.” You mumble over and over to yourself.

The circular realms overlap each other, and the more overlap there is, the further you delved. The first two realms you visited were two of the three outer circles, but where does the Ancillary Manta reside?

You need to delve now.

“Sophia!” You hear a voice call out from behind you and turn around, startled.

Marissa stands in the doorway of your room with a look of deep concern on her face. “I’ve called out to you so many times. Why didn’t you answer?”

You stare at her blankly, then close your journal shut. “I don’t care.” You shake your head.

She’s quiet for a long time. “Will you be coming with us this time? Last time you delved somewhere differently, and Ellie and I had to leave early because we thought something may have happened to you.”

You take a breath to calm yourself. You really don’t want to be babysitting while you on the verge of confirming a major discovery. While you may now have the choice of direction, you doubt that your two apprentices do.

You contain your hunger.

“Last time my hairpin gave me an idea, so I went with it. But this time you know I won’t end up in the same place as you two, so you don’t have to return early.” You calmly answer.
A look of disappointment flashes on Marissa’s face, but then she dutifully nods in agreement.

You turn away from her to think about your delve, but the sight of your bed reminds you of something important.

“Laurent!” You call for your guardian who appears in practically an instant. He must have been waiting out in the hall.

“What’s wrong?” He firmly asks, detecting the small note of concern on your voice.

“I need you to go to Matthias’s house and tell him what happened here last night, and for him to come here first thing in the morning.” You quickly order.
He nods and is about to head out right before you remember something else.

You point to him. “Come back here immediately after. Our delving tanks will be exposed for as long as you’re gone. I’ll be exposed for as long you’re gone.”

With that knowledge he practically flies from your house to complete your orders.

[1/2]
>>
>>38665957

You, Ellie, and Marissa stand ready to begin in the ritual room.

You turn to the two of them. “Don’t tell anyone that you’re human, certainly don’t trust anyone there, and turn back at the first sign of danger. You two aren’t complete amateurs anymore, so make me proud and bring something back this time.”

“Got it!” Ellie beams in response, while Marissa gives a quick nod.

For a brief moment you consider giving them your compass to use, but you decide against it since you’re more likely to need it if they follow your advice.

No more words need to be said, the three of you undress, step into your pools of blood, and begin reciting the incantation.

The chant flows from your mouths clearly and eloquently. Your voices harmonize in their unison, which serves to spur your forward.

All of your other concerns fall to the wayside. There is only this, this is what you were truly meant to be doing.

The visions of the floating rocks of your first delve, the wetland marsh of your second, and an unfamiliar sandy badlands come clearly into your mind. These exist as the outermost realms.

From the deeper realms between them, you detect not visual aspects, but sounds. Guttural, primal, and horrifying all the same. All of them scream in a completely unique chorus of raw emotion. They simultaneous welcome and warn you away with their many voices.

“Control of direction.”

Holy crap it makes so much sense. The questions is whether or not it's a other realm weapon.

The circles of realms interlock, we get all three we can do more.

Really rather not tie-breaker roll on this one, but I will if I have to~.

You set your focus on the sandy badland before fully immersing yourself in the blood. All your weight quickly fades and you sink into the familiar all-engulfing blackness.

~

It’s too hot.

You open your eyes to see exactly what the visions showed you, a barren, arid, and rocky wasteland.

The ground beneath you scorches with warmth making you wonder if the heat was absorbed from above, or perhaps radiating from some other source, from deep within the ground itself.

You push yourself off the ground to and see it teeming with many vessels carrying a thick and viscous blue fluid just below the surface. The strong dry wind sweeps against your bare body, making your wings stretch out instinctively, but they quickly retract from fear of being harmed again.

You sigh, the vast expanses of land call out to you to soar high above them, but you’re stuck to traversing the land on bare foot.
Well, at least the destination is obvious.

A singular and straight path stretches far off into the distance, leading to a striking rock structure sticking out defiantly among the nothingness. From deep inside, a powerful humming emanates, a sends a soft tingling vibration all the way to your feet.

It all gives the impression of containing something, or perhaps someone very significant.

You take your first step forward, and begin to make your way towards it, and whatever is inside.

Thanks for running Auri! Why does Ali keep referring to things like plays and stage help?
>>
>>38666907
You're very welcome! Touching all the bases was a good idea in terms of keeping yourself physically safe, yes.
>>38666914
You're also very welcome!
>>38666958
You're very welcome! I can't fully go into it, but remember, there's much more to a play than what you see on the stage.

So she's receiving her cues and assistance from behind the curtain?
>>
>>38667048
That depends, she could be an actor, a stagehand, an audience member, a ticket taker, or one of various other things.

It's up to you to figure out exactly what she means.
