Trunks and Joltik size up Steelix and Skarmory. The size difference between your teams is pretty huge.

“They both usually don’t use Special Attacks,” Robin comments, both to you and herself.

It hits you. “He’s using them first because he knows where all the reflective spots are and we don’t!”

Robin nods. “I was th-thinking the same thing. He doesn’t want to reveal them until he needs to. It’s his trump card.”

That makes sense. The entire arena is covered in metal that looks exactly the same to you, but he knows where all the reflective pieces are. He can use it for a trick shot when he needs it. He’s betting you won’t find them very quickly.

No time for more talk! He’s already starting to move!

To your surprise, Skarmory moves first. It’s not that fast, but it’s fast enough! It uses Rock Slide on Trunks and Joltik. Joltik looks like it took a massive blow and is very hurt already.

Robin doesn’t waste time retaliating. “Thunder!“

It’s a surprisingly aggressive move from Robin. An immense blast of electricity strikes down from high up in the arena on Skarmory, hitting it for massive damage and paralyzing it. That looks like it hurt even more. Skarmory is barely able to hold on. It’s nearly a critical hit, but Skarmory was just milliseconds too fast to be hit in a vulnerable spot.

“Confuse ray them both!” You shout to Trunks. You’ve been getting a lot of practice at rapid-firing that move. You use it more than any other with your Pokemon and it’s become a bit of a speciality. Both rays reach their targets easily, confusing them.

“Fire Fang!” Furby yells, and Steelix complies. He snakes along the ground, making a horrible grinding noise as he moves. Trunks isn’t able to avoid it and he takes a hard bite. It looks like Steelix avoided letting confusion get to it for now. You feel like you just barely avoided getting burned.

Skarmory is confused, paralyzed, and only barely healthy enough to fight. Steelix is confused, but otherwise in perfect shape. Joltik is severely hurt and so is Trunks.

“I can use Flash, but it will blind Trunks too,” Robin says. You can tell from her tone she doesn't want to do that.

You let yourself show a sly grin. ”Trunks! Phantom Force!”

You don’t need to tell Robin with words. She can see your intention clearly. Joltik is pretty fast, but she waits for Trunks to vanish before moving. As soon as Trunks is gone, she moves into action.

“Flash! Let’s go!”

A massive flash illuminates the gym. The shiny, reflective surface only concentrates Flash that much more. It’s absolutely blinding. Before you lose your sight, you and Robin and everyone else can clearly see the difference between sections of the gym. You have a good idea of which are made out of the special metal.

Skarmory somehow manages to shake off it’s confusion and paralysis, nailing Joltik with a power Drill Peck. It’s a critical hit!

“Joltik!” Robin cries out before retrieving it. “Good job,” she assures the ball.

Steelix lashes out at where Trunks was and misses.

Trunks re-appears and smacks Skarmory out of the sky. It comes crashing to the ground and Trunks lands, cackling maniacally.

“Go, Dratini!” Robin yells.

“Go, Bronzong!” Furby yells. “It looks like I was right to go all out on you. A real trainer re-forges their bonds in the heat of battle!”

Damn. This guys tough.

Flash reduces accuracy only by one stage, which is not a lot, by percentage.
>>
>>38727071
With the Flash I figured it would be stronger due to how Gobble emphasized how the reflective Steel walls reflected the Flash a thousand times over.

Would make it pretty bad since they're made to reflect that sort of thing and Flash is an everywhere move.

You still have to blink a bit after that Flash. You can’t imagine how bad it is for Steelix.

You see Furby call out his attacks, but he’s just quiet enough that the sound doesn’t carry over to you. That’s weird, since so far he’s been loud and dramatic.

“Destiny Bond!” Trunks rushes forward with his glowing purple orbs, cackling manically.

Robin has her Dratini use Safeguard. And it’s just in time too. Bronzing shoots off Confuse Ray and it fizzles out.

Steelix breaths in, preparing an attack. He specifically aims it at a wall you know is reflective.

He sprays Dragon Breath at the wall and it reflects. It’s not as powerful as you think it should have been, but it spreads the attack even wider than it would usually be. It may have hit both your Pokemon, but now it sprays over your entire half of the arena so it’s nearly impossible to dodge. He sacrificed power to try to make up for his lack of accuracy!

Dratini and Trunks are both hit. Dratini takes it well, even though it’s super effective, but Trunks faints.

You hear cheering as Steelix suddenly seizes up as well. He falls over.

“Well done!” Furby yells. “You’ve truly got a iron gut!” He reaches to throw out a new Pokemon.

“Good job, Trunks,” you say as you retrieve your fainted Trevenent. You reach down and grab your next Pokemon too.

Its not failing because of a stupid decision. Going after magnazone first is a perfectly valid choice. Its failing because of a poor dice roll. I suppose it makes it slightly more accurate to the game but I still prefer not having them.
>>
>>38728218
>Going after magnazone first is a perfectly valid choice.
Except we didn't go after Bronzong, we spread out the attack on both and weakned it, therefore taking out neither.

You move first. “Devon! Flamethrower! Right there!”

Devon quickly rushes to action spraying a powerful blast of heat on the reflective surface. It cuts the power a little, but he coats both Magnezone and Bronzong in fire.

It washes over Magnezone first. It recoils under the heat as each section tries to avoid the brunt of it simultaneously. It acts like like Zappy Dan.

The wave hits Bronzong next. It’s a critical hit! Bronzong is slammed into a pillar and the flames get under the bell part. That looks like it hurt a lot! You figure any reasonably strong attack will finish it. It also has a nasty burn that might do the job for you if you wait long enough.

“D-Dragon Dance!” Robin yells. Her Dratini is getting pumped.

Furby slams his own belly, like he’s trying to use Belly Drum on himself. He’s lost in the fight. “Magnet Rise! Sandstorm!”

Magnezone raises high off the ground, and Bronzing summons a whirlwind of sand that covers the arena. You feel small bits of sand hit you even from where you’re standing.

Robin’s Dratini moves first thanks to Dragon Dance. “T-twister!” She usually doesn’t stutter when battling, but she’s been doing it the entire match. It must be the camera making her nervous.

Dratini looses a Twister attack that slams into Magneton and Bronzong. Despite it getting no boost from Dragon Dance, it hits hard! Magneton takes a critical hit as it’s three pieces separate and slam into each other. It takes a second to recombine properly. Bronzong’s bell is rung. Thanks to your earlier critical and burn damage, it slowly comes down from floating and rests on the ground, gently defeated.

“Devon! Sunny Day!”

The sandstorm gives way to a bright light and Dratini begins to evolve.

Furby laughs. “Yes! Amazing! Don’t believe you’re safe yet though.” He throws out another Pokeball. “You’re forcing me to use my full strength!”

It’s a Metagross. He wasn’t kidding! That thing looks tough! Magneton takes a fighting position next to it. It looks hurt, but eager for revenge.

Robin let’s out a happy squeal as Dratini turns into Dragonair. She jumps up and down excitedly, but struggles to keep a series face.

Who clearly didn't.

And I did not act like we had more pokemon left than we did, at any point. Its 6v6, our side has however two people, so we split the 6 among us. Its not rocket science.

The namefag kept saying I was *wrong* because he couldn't count that 6vs6 when one side has two people means each of them gets 3 but that still makes it 6v6.

“Drat-I mean, Dragonair!” Robin looks at you in glee for a split second before turning serious again. “Outrage! Just like we practiced!”

Why is she doing that? It won’t be effective! She must be overly excited to see Dragonair use a Dragon-type move.

Dragonair turns the same purple that you’ve seen on Destiny plenty of times, but this looks different. Destiny uses Outrage to vent her annoyance, but it looks like Dragoniar has tapped into something more.

It fires like a rocket directly at Magnezone. It’s an outstanding hit! The shockwaves tosses your hair back as Metagross, heavy as it is, is forced backwards. Maybe this isn’t such a bad idea after all.

It’s hurt, but not nearly as much as you’d expect. That thing must have absurd defence! It glares at Dragonair. It doesn’t look happy about taking such a heavy hit.

Dragonair quickly leaps back to your side as you direct Devon. She's going to use it again, but it will take a second. “Flamethrower! Hit Magneton!”

Devon puts his feet in the usual position and coats Magneton in a rope of flames. The three eyes look on in panic as the heat finishes them off.

“Yes! Good job Devon!”

(continued)
>>
“Don’t get too excited!” Furby yells. “Metagross! Avenge your comrade! Earthquake!”

Metagross slams down hard, shaking the ground in the same way you saw Nibbles do it. The steel plates fly off the floor as waves of earth crash through the area. It’s a devastating blow, deeply hurting the already injured Dragonair, and knocking Devon off his feet.

“Dragonair!” Robin yells. She reaches for it’s Pokeball, but hesitates. “I-I’m sorry Kat. That was the wrong move.”

Dragonair gets up at the same time as Devon. Both Pokemon are in rough shape. Even a very weak move could finish them off.

Metagross is really strong.

“Go, Empoleon!” He throws out his last Pokemon. It doesn’t have nearly the presence of Metagross, but it still looks pretty tough.

At least the Sunny Day is still up. That should take the edge off of any water moves. He also can’t use Earthquake again without hurting his own Pokemon. Although who knows, maybe he’ll do it anyway.

No what i mean is that in like almost all Pokemon related quests on /tg/ the gym battles even though in reality the leaders are handicapped to all hell and back, are still amazing because of all of the extra shit they do like the reflective surfaces for instance. Or battles in pitch darkness. or hell anything. Im not even asking for much other than they have more than the Gym Leader using a super potion/full restore every once in a while.
>>
>>38730503
I know. Way to miss the joke dude, we all know gym leader battles are stale as shit in the games
>>
>>38730486
Thunder Fang requires getting up close and personal.

Although...

Gobble, is there a path of metal plates that could conduct electricity to Empoleon and Metagross? If so, Thunder Fang on that instead of a Solarbeam.
>>
>>38730417
Solarbeam is currently a weaker choice on Empoleon than flamethrower would be, since both hit neutral and flamethrower benefits from Sunny Day(135BP vs Solar Beams 120) and gets STAB.
>>
>>38730503
Fighting in pitch blackness in the game just makes you miss a lot.
>>
>>38730549
It'd just be like fighting Lt surgest fucking double teaming raichu
>>
>>38730549
and having a gym leader who uses a team designed around buffing there accuracy, or using auto hit moves in a pitch black battle would still be a step up.
>>
>>38730594
No, that would be just annoying.
>>
>>38730532
I get that it was a joke but i am being mildly serious. I know i probably shouldnt care like at all, but the whole set up of the main series games has been literally the same since R/B/Y. Of course back when i was like 9 Brock was a tough fight for Charmander, and Whitney's Miltank was a she-demon on wheels, but i kinda wish they would do things like what i see in the /tg/ quests. I get that the 3DS is a limited handheld, but.....meh i guess it doesnt really matter.
>>
>>38730617
Yes but imagine what they could achieve on a console!
>>
>>38730617
You would have to change the whole style of the games. Something a bit like dragon ball xenoverse might work for the fights.
>>
>>38730617
Fuck that miltank with its 'rapist of pokemon teams' subtype and its rollout spam was a son of a bitch to fight.
>>
>>38730689
Oh fuck the damn memories of that fight I thiught I suppressed them!
>>
>>38730684
Honestly i hope that that Pokken idea isnt shit. Even if we never get it outside of Japan, its a huge breath of fresh air for this series as a whole.
>>
>>38730410
Oh, but they can be. You should try out a nuzlocke or one of Drayano's hacks some time.
>>
>>38730711
I swear that thing must have killed so many gameboy consoles
>>
>>38730689
It's why you try not to do a Nuzlocke for those
>>
>>38730747
I have nuzlocked in the past and yes the kill clause makes the battle more relevant but at the same time you have to add like 8 extra restrictions to them in order to get anywhere near the levels of tense and high drama that /tg/ gym battles provide.

Robin can’t swap Dragonair while it’s still using Outrage. She’s starting to panic. “I-I’m sorry!” Her nerves must really be shot. If there’s one time Robin usually looks fairly confident, it’s when she’s battling.

Dragonair rushes forward, slamming into Empoleon. It’s a heavy hit, but Empoleon resists it. Dragonair finally gets control of itself, but it looks confused.

You quickly follow up on her offensive. “Devon! Flamethrower that Metagross!” That monster has you worried.

Devon looks back, asking a question. You shake your head. You don’t want him mega-evolving just yet.

He turns around and tries to dig his feet onto the metal plating, then fires another powerful Flamethrower. it strikes Metagross in the side as it’s watching Dragonair. It yells out as the flames press into him. He turns around to stare at Devon. He’s furious and injured.

“How is that thing still up?” You ask yourself silently.

Furby rips off the heavy apron he’s had on since you came in to find him working on his blacksmithing. He has a wife-beater underneath, coated in sweat from the excitement. “Now! Magnet Rise and Earthquake!”

It’s the same combo he used before! Except this time it’s Metagross that rises up, and Empoleon that uses Earthquake.

Dragonair and Devon are sent flying back from the waves of dirt. Metal plates disjoint off the ground and reveal normal dirt below, but Furby doesn’t seem to far.

“Yes! This is a battle!” His booming voice echoes out.

“Dragonair and Houndoom are unable to battle,” The referee announces. You and Robin retrieve them.

“K-Kat, I’m sorry,” Robin says. “This is my fault.” Her confidence is shot. She probably feels like she’s letting you down.

You think of what to say as you both reach for your last Pokemon. She reaches for Vulpix’s ball.

Anon, pls stop talking before actually looking through the pokemons move-set. Empoleon is weak to Focus Blast and Metagross is weak to the HP:Fire, which is also boosted to near flamethrower level with Sunny Day.

You throw out Raistlin as she throws her Vulpix.

“D-don’t worry,” she stutters. “We’ve been training really hard.” She looks down at her feet. I’m sorry for messing this up.”

“It's okay. You just got exited from Dragonair evolving.” You give her hand a gentle squeeze. “Saying you only lose because you played bad would be selling our opponent short, he's just that good, but we will be better.”

She smiles up. at you. Her eyes are still unsure, but she appreciates the words. “T-Thanks.”

You smile back. "Don't worry about the cameras, Robin. I know we can do this."

You both face the arena. Both you and Furby are down to your last Pokemon.

Sunny Day won’t last much longer.

Robin eyes Empoleon, then the soft dirt that was revealed when Earthquake knocked the plates loose.

"How will this end, I wonder!" He yells over the arena. "Show me your resolve!"
